4 Unit Play. Take Under 9.5 between the LA Dodgers @ Washington Nationals (Friday @ 7pm est). Padilla comes off a shaky effort with his new ballclub his last time out. I expect him to have a better effort today as he looks to rebound from giving up four runs to the Giants at home as the Dodgers went on to lose the game 4-8. I guess it was a bit expected as Padilla had back to back quality starts giving up just 2 runs in San Fran and Arizona and obviously, San Fran had the revenge angle given that they faced Vincente. As Vincete faces Washington who has not really seen him, I expect him to pitch well. Martin is the second best pitcher on the Nationals staff as he is putting together a string of quality starts and given that the Dodgers don't have a great deal of experience against him - and the fact that 75% of the public favors the Dodgers here and the line is about -150, I expect the Nats hurler to have a quality and competitive start today. The Under is 9-3-1 in Dodger's games when the total is set at this mark and the Under is 4-1 in Martin's last five starts as an Underdog.

4 Unit Play. #910. Take Under 8 between the Chicago Cubs @ San Francisco Giants (Friday @ 10:15pm est). Penny had a disappointing effort his last time out for this new ballclub in the Giants. He gave up seven runs in less than 3 innings at LA. Of course, that came off him dominating the Dodgers at home in San Fran as the Giants went on to win that game 7-2. He had only defeated the Padres in the start prior to that 9-4 giving up just two runs in seven innings. I expect Penny to bounce-back today and the Giants to have a strong chance of winning given they are just four games back of the Rockies. Having said that, I can't go against Ryan Dempster who pitched brilliantly in his last start but fell short 1-2 as he picked up a no-decision. It was a shame as he pitched 8 innings of 1 run ball. Rino usually has a non-quality start after two quality starts and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants to also take the side here given the playoff implications that exist. But, given the strong reverse movement on the line here as the Giants opened up at -130, it makes me a bit weary of the side. Rather, let's take the under today. The Under is 5-1 when Dempster faces a winning team on the road and the Under is 13-5-1 when the Giants are favored by this margin at home.

Good luck,

IC

*12:35 ET* CIN/PIT! 22-10 RUN

Scott Rickenbach’s MLB 6* (Regular Play) Cincinnati Reds Money Line (-) @ Pittsburgh @ 12:35 PM ET: Arroyo vs Morton –

Cincinnati Reds (Arroyo)-125 over PITTSBURGH PIRATES (Morton)

We don’t play big favorites in baseball and we rarely even step into the “moderate” price range that the Reds are listed at today. However, this is a classic case of two teams heading in opposite directions right now and – along with the pitching advantage that Bronson Arroyo gives us here – we have no qualms about laying the 130+ price on Cincinnati. The Reds have defeated the Pirates seven straight times. Cincy’s two wins in this series have come by a combined score of 22-6. The Pirates have lost eight of their last nine home games and we look for them to struggle once again at PNC Park this afternoon. Pittsburgh is an ugly 5-24 in their last 29 games. As for the Reds, they are 20-10 in their last 30 games. It seems apparent that Cincinnati is already trying to build momentum for next season while the Pirates are simply “playing out the string” and just can’t wait for this season to come to a close. Charlie Morton gets the start for Pittsburgh this afternoon and he’s 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA against the Reds this season. Morton has pitched better since mid-August but still has nearly as many walks as strikeouts over his last five starts. Also, the right-hander has allowed 32 hits in his last 30.1 innings so he certainly hasn’t been dominant. He just got rocked at Cincinnati in his first start this month as Morton gave up six earned runs on 9 hits and 4 walks in just five innings of work. He struck out just one Red in what was a very rough performance for him. Morton is coming off of a strong start in his most recent outing but it came against a Padres club that has one of the weakest lineups in baseball. Morton will be no match for Arroyo here. The Reds right-hander began his career with the Pirates and he shut them down on just four hits in eight shutout innings back on May 1st. Arroyo has been a “machine” of late as he’s lasted at least seven innings in each of his last ten starts. This dates back to August 1st and Arroyo’s ERA is a solid 2.06 since then! Opponents are hitting just .219 against Arroyo in August and September combined and he stays red-hot hear against a Pirates team that can’t wait for this season’s misery to end. Play Cincinnati on the money line as a 6* Regular Play selection.

Chicago –1.02 over SAN FRANCISCO PINNACLE
The Cubbies are one of the more frustrating teams to wager on because of their inability to move runners over or get them in from third with less than two outs and subsequently fail to score. However, Brad Penny is on the hill and his implosion last game was inevitable. Penny had allowed just four earned runs in 22 frames in his previous three starts before the Dodgers ripped him apart five days ago. If you throw out his start against the Padres in which he struck out six batters, in his other three starts with the Giants he’s struck out five batters in 18 innings. This guy is just so hittable and if the Giants happen to make it to the post-season, he’ll never see the mound. Furthermore, the Cubs hitters have a solid past against Penny and that’s when he was much better throwing for the Dodgers. The Cubs batters have collectively had 93 AB’s against Penny and they have a batting average of .290. By contrast, the Giants collectively are hitting .235 off Ryan Dempster in 132 AB’s. The Cubbies aren’t playing for much but these major-leaguers love to make life miserable for those that are and definitely get a little more jacked up when faced with an opportunity to prevent a team from going to the playoffs. San Fran with Penny on the hill is an unappealing option indeed. Play: Chicago –1.02 (Risking 2.04 units to win 2).

5-Star Baseball Terrible Total of the Month

(903) Dodgers/ (904) Nationals Under the total. Even with 3 errors, last night's game slipped under the total. The Washington offense has really cooled off of late, getting only 5 hits last night. This park is huge, a haven for those on the mound. The Nationals are on an 8-2 run under the total. Vicente Padilla of the Dodgers is having a good year, and coming to the NL has been a big plus, which is common. He is 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA his last three starts. J.D. Martin has been very good for Washington, with a 2-0 record and a 3.18 ERA his last three starts, and LA has never seen him. Play the Dodgers/Nationals Under the total.

Ole Miss -3 over SOUTH CAROLINA

Mississippi start the year with their highest preseason ranking ever and have moved up since, after beating Memphis and SE LA, but we really don't know how legit their top 5 ranking is yet. I'm here to tell ya that this team is a solid top 5 team and will prove it with an easy win over a SC squad that has been incosistent to start the year. The Rebels hold the edges on both sides of the bal and are anxious to show people that they really deserve the high ranking. This one should be easy.

The Phillies have feasted on Jeff Suppan in the past and nothing will change tonight. Philadelphia may have the worst bullpen in baseball right now the way they have blown save after save the past month. If they were getting any reliable bullpen work they would have already clinched the NL East crown. The Phillies throw Happ tonight who has struggled recently with his stuff and an injury and was rocked in his only career appearance against Milwaukee. The lefthanded bats of the Phillies will enjoy their matchup with Suppan, but look for Jayson Werth to also have a big game. We expect that Braun and Cameron will carry the load for the Brewers offense as they try to finish the season above .500 for the third straight year. Take this game over as runs will start early and continue right through the ninth

Bobby Maxwell Thursday's winner... 500 Unit SEC Midweek Must Play - SOUTH CAROLINA

An SEC team with the talent of South Carolina is getting points at home in a nationally televised conference matchup? I don't understand it but I'll certainly jump all over it. Play Steve Spurrier and grab the points tonight.

Spurrier's guys had a cupcake game on Saturday, beating Florida Atlantic 38-16, after two tough games to open the season, beating NC State in the season-opener for college football in a defensive battle, 7-3, and then going to Georgia and losing a shootout 41-37. The Gamecocks covered in each of the first two games and showed they can slug it out on defense or offense.

Everyone is singing the praises of Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead, but expect that South Carolina defense to have a gameplan for him. We know the Ole Miss defense is supposed to be specdtacular, but it isn't facing Southeastern Louisiana here. The 'Cocks have offensive talent in QB Stephen Garcia and RB Jarvis Giles. Garcia has 683 yards passing so far this year and Giles ran for 113 on 11 carries on Saturday.

South Carolina went to Ole Miss and beat the Rebels a season ago, 31-24 as a two-point road 'dog. The 'Cocks are on ATS runs of 6-2-1 in September games, 12-5 after an ATS win and 5-2 in SEC play.

This home crowd is going to be pumped up and honestly I think the Ole Miss squad is a big overrated at No. 4 in the country. Their offense is good, but not great and their defense hasn't been tested yet against an offense with the firepower of South Carolina.

Play Spurrier and the 'Cocks tonight!

GAME NOTES: The only FBS game being played on Thursday night pits the fourth- ranked Ole Miss Rebels against the South Carolina Gamecocks in SEC action from Columbia, South Carolina. Ole Miss owns an 8-6 edge in the all-time series, but the Gamecocks managed to halt a five-game losing skid to the Rebels last season.
Ole Miss entered the 2009 campaign with tremendous hype, as head coach Houston Nutt is loaded with a level of talent that hasn't existed in Oxford for quite some time. The Rebels beat up on Memphis in the opener, and after a week off, they returned to the field last weekend to post a 52-6 victory over Southeastern Louisiana. Considering that both opponents are significantly inferior, we really don't know how good Ole Miss really is, but a prime time road clash with South Carolina figures to be revealing. The Rebels are riding an eight-game win streak, their longest since 1971-72.
"We know we are going into a very hostile environment," says Nutt of this week's matchup. "Their crowd is always hostile and loud - we're looking forward to that. We have always had a lot of respect for South Carolina and the athletes that they put on the field."
Speaking of the Gamecocks, they improved to 2-1 on the young season with a 38-16 thrashing of Florida Atlantic last weekend. USC suffered its only defeat in its only SEC game to date, a heartbreaking 41-37 road loss to Georgia. Steve Spurrier has yet to elevate the South Carolina program to the level of success he achieved as the head coach at Florida, and there is no reason to believe that this year's squad will be able to rise to the top of the talent- packed SEC.
Heading into this season, Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead was being billed as a darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate. The strong-armed signal caller hasn't been spectacular, completing 56 percent of his passes for 384 yards to date, but he will be judged on his play against SEC competition. Dexter McCluster has nine catches for 113 yards, while Shay Hodge has eight receptions for 136 yards. Clearly, Snead has the necessary weapons in place to be successful. Brandon Bolden has rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for the Rebels, and he figures to see an increase in his workload this week.
While Ole Miss is averaging 48.5 ppg, the team has limited its opponents to 10.0 ppg and 293.0 total ypg. Foes are gaining just 3.3 yards per rushing attempt and 9.2 yards per pass completion, so the Rebels have been good against both means of attack. Perhaps the most impressive stat of all is that Ole Miss has permitted opponents to make good on only 4-of-30 third down conversion attempts. Johnny Brown leads the team with 20 tackles, and he has an interception to his credit as well.
In the victory over Southeastern Louisiana last weekend, Ole Miss picked up 25 first downs and gained 500 total yards. The Rebels ran for 258 yards at a clip of 7.4 yards per rush. There were three rushing and three passing touchdowns scored, as the club marched up and down the field at will against the non-FBS opponent. On a down note, the Rebels turned the ball over twice in the tilt and allowed 302 yards despite giving up just six points.
When asked about the status of standout defensive end Greg Hardy, who has played sparingly because of an ankle injury, Nutt said, "He should be ready to go this week." That's great news for the Rebels.
Through three games, South Carolina is scoring 27.3 ppg while gaining 399.7 total ypg. Stephen Garcia is the team's quarterback, and he has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 683 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Garcia is athletic enough to make some plays as a runner as well, although Jarvis Giles and Brian Maddox are the two main ball carriers for the Gamecocks. Weslye Saunders is tops among receivers with 13 catches, but Tori Gurley leads the way with 180 receiving yards.
Defensively, South Carolina is yielding 20.0 ppg and 249.3 total ypg. The Gamecocks have been extremely tough against the run, permitting a mere 87.3 ypg on an average of 2.8 yards per rushing attempt. The pass defense has been strong as well, limiting opposing quarterbacks to 9.3 yards per completion. With seven takeaways and 10 sacks in three outings, USC has made a wealth of big plays. Eric Norwood is the star of the defense, and he is undoubtedly one of the most feared defenders in all of college football. The versatile athlete is listed as a linebacker but lines up at defensive end sometimes, and he has made 17 total tackles, including four sacks, and has intercepted a pass. Norwood has 26 career sacks, tying him for the most in program history.
In the 22-point romp over Florida Atlantic last weekend, Maddox scored three touchdowns, twice as a runner and once as a receiver. Still, he was held to 23 rushing yards on 10 attempts, while Giles rushed for 113 yards on 11 carries. Garcia was efficient under center, as he connected on 20-of-27 passes for 222 yards and a score.
"When we run the ball like that, we're going to be pretty tough to beat," said Garcia of the effort of Giles and company. "We just have to keep going like that going into the Ole Miss game."
The defense was strong against the run in the FAU tilt as usual, and three takeaways were registered by the Gamecocks. Clearly, this week's game presents a new and more difficult challenge.
"We just have to go out there and make it happen," said Norwood when asked about stopping Snead and the Ole Miss offense. "He's a good quarterback. We got pressure on him last year, and I don't see why we can't do it this year."
In a game that will be worth watching from start to finish, expect the Rebels to prevail in what should be a dogfight throughout. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Ole Miss 24, South Carolina 17

1500* - Ole Miss Rebels Definitely tough to lay points on the road in the SEC, but I believe the Rebels have what it takes to pass this road test, and keep their record unblemished.

Last year South Carolina won a 31-24 decision in Oxford as the 2 1/2-point underdog. It is worth noting that that loss came immediately after the Rebs had defeated Florida in Gainsville 31-30 as the 3 touchdown-plus underdog the week prior. As you can see, the "letdown" factor was looming large in that game for the Rebels.

That is not the case this season, as Ole Miss has had some time to get ready for this revenge game, and they have the weapons to get that revenge.

South Carolina's secondary is the weak link in this game, and Ole Miss triggerman Jevon Snead has a pair of receivers in McCluster, and Hodge that can exploit the young Gamecocks secondary.

Carolina is just 2-5 as the home dog since 2006, while Ole Miss is on a 6-1 against the spread run away from home their last 7, including covering at Memphis to open the season this year.

Counting their bowl win to conclude the season last year, the Rebels have won their last 8 games. Look for them to up that mark to 9 in a row with the win and cover in Columbia tonight.
