5 UNIT PLAY (NFL GOM, Also It Is A Power Angle Play)

Carolina +9 over DALLAS: Yes this is Dallas' first home MNF game in their new stadium, but they may not be up for this one after the emotional balle with the G-Men last week. Dallas may have added by subtracting when they got rid of TO, but at last check he wasn't on the defensive side and that's where their problems have been early in the year. Dallas is allowing 443 ypg and 27 ppg through thier first 2 games. That's very un Dallas like. Carolina really struggled on offense in their opening week loss to the Eagles, but they were never really able to get it going after a ton of TO's. Last week vs a tough Atlanta defense they were even in the TO battle and as a result were able to put up 440 yards of offense, including 296 through the air. There is no question that Dallas has the better overall talent, but they are still an unfocused group that will allow a hungry carolina team to keep this one close, if not win outright. Boy's by no more than 3. Power Angles For This Play-- Panthers are 17-1 ATS as non-div dogs vs opp that allowed 28 or more points last week & 19-4 ATS as road dogs vs less than .777 opp who scored 14 or more last game, while the Boys are 4-17-1 ATS at home off a Loss.

NFL (431) CAROLINA PANTHERS at (432) DALLAS COWBOYS

Take: (431) CAROLINA PANTHERS (5* Monday Night)

Reason: It seems the playoff disaster by Carolina (0-2 SU/ATS) has continued over to 2009 and sapped their confidence. They were destroyed at home in the opener, 38-10, by the Eagles, then lost 28-20 at Atlanta. QB Jake Delhomme (1 TD, 5 INTs) has struggled, though he threw for 308 yards, 1 TD and 1 pick Sunday in Atlanta. WRs Steve Smith (137 yards) and Muhsin Muhammad are off a good game, and the ground game had 144 yards behind RBs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. They have plenty of talent on offense.. Dallas (1-1 SU/ATS) has a lot to prove, flopping badly under coach Wade Phillips, missing the playoffs after a 1-3 SU/ATS finish. Dallas was No. 8 in total defense in 2008. QB Tony Romo (4 TDs, 3 INTs) leads a versatile offense, with a good one-two backfield punch in RB Marion Barber and Felix Jones, plus WR Patrick Crayton, Pro Bowl TE Jason Witten and WR Roy Williams. They rolled up 462 yards in a 34-21 win at Tampa Bay, but the defense was terrible allowing 450 yards (174 rushing). They come off a frustrating 33-31 last second home loss to their rival, the NY Giants, despite 251 rushing yards (4 TOs hurt). This secondary is still suspect, something the Panthers should be able to attack. This is just too many points for a Cowboys team to lay to a Panthers club with so many offensive weapons

Bryan Leonard's AL Central Total of the Month

MInnesota at Detroit

It's amazing that in a season with a whopping 162 games played that the whole year would come down to how these two fare head to head. The only real playoff race is featured tonight in Detroit as the Tigers look to hang on to a two game lead over the Twins. Nick Blackburn and Rick Porcello will tangle for the third time this season with the teams splitting the first two meetings. Detroit and Porcello won the first meeting 9-0 as Blackburn was hit hard. But the Twins and Blackburn got their revenge in a 6-2 victory later on in the season.

Now with the pressure on we expect this game to be played very close to the vest. This American League game will be played like a traditional National League game. Jim Leyland won a World Series in the senior circuit and the Twins have always played small ball well. Because of the significance of this series the managers will play these games as if they were playoff games, and yet the pricing on this contest hasn't been affected by it's importance.

Look for both teams to play conservatively as this one stays well under the posted total. PLAY UNDER

This is obviously the biggest series in baseball, but there are two pitchers going that have been inconsistent at best, so expect big nights from hitters that will be totally locked in. Blackburn is going to get lit up as the Tigers middle of the lineup will be jacked up for this with all their playoff experience. You know that Mauer and Cuddyer in particular will hit all series long, but tonight they may go 7-8 with 5 RBI's. We would lean with the Tigers to win but the over is where your money needs to be as both teams should score 6 runs!

5 Unit Play. Take Under 9.5 Baltimore Orioles @ Tampa Bay Rays (Monday @ 7pm). We've taken Hendrickson several time when he faces his former team. Whenever he does, he typically shows up and we cash on the under. When I saw Mark was facing the Rays once again, this was a standard play. Hendrickson faced his former team just recently and had a shaky outing in three innings against them and I look for him to make a quick bounce-back in a familiar setting in Tampa Bay. In that same token, Niemann comes off a bounce-back himself as he gave up three runs against Seattle in roughly seven innings. Granted, he picked up a no-decision in his last start but the Rays ended up losing 3-4. Niemann had put together four of five quality starts overall and his one non-quality start recently came against Baltimore when he yielded six runs in just over four innings. The game was at Baltimore and the Rays ended up losing 5-10. I'm sure Niemann remembers that start as it was just two efforts ago and he will try to redeem himself today. The Under is 15-5-1 for the Orioles when they are underdogs by this margin and the Under is 4-0 in Niemann's last four starts at home.

Good luck,
IC

Dominic Fazzini Monday's play 10 Dime -- Panthers (plus points vs. COWBOYS)

PANTHERS

Both of these teams have alarming problems that need to be addressed immediately. For starters, neither Dallas nor Carolina has been playing much defense.

The Cowboys have given up 877 yards in their first two games, and have yet to get a sack or turnover. Meanwhile, the Panthers are allowing 33 points per game and star defensive end Julius Peppers is being ripped for the unit's poor performance.

Some of Carolina's problems on defense, though, stem from quarterback Jake Delhomme's penchant for turning the ball over. A more efficient Delhomme probably solves a lot of the team's problems right there.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo also has been struggling, completing just 13 of 29 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions last weekend in Dallas' 33-31 loss to the Giants.

It's not going to be any easier for Romo if tailback Marion Barber, who has a quadriceps injury, misses tonight's game. Barber ran for 124 yards last week, but was hurt in the fourth quarter.

Here's a stat for you: NFL teams who start 0-2 after winning 11 or more games the previous year (Carolina won 12) are 17-7-1 against teams that won 10 games or less the season before (Dallas won nine). Also, the Cowboys are 0-6 ATS at home after playing the Giants, and 0-4 ATS in their last four Monday night games.

If Dallas couldn't get fired up enough last week to play well against New York with all the hype surrounding the opening of the new $1.15 billion Cowboys Stadium, then how is it supposed to blow away a Carolina team that is trying not to fall to 0-3 for the first time since 1998. I'm not saying the Panthers are going to win tonight, but they should manage to stay within a touchdown. Take Carolina to cover the points.

With a lame-duck interim manager and nothing to shoot for in the final week of the 2009 season it is not a surprise that the Astros hand the ball to Yorman Bazardo again, and that works out well for us tonight. Bazardo had already thrown 135 pitches in the Minors before being called up in early against, and the experiment of seeing how he would far as a starter has been a complete disaster ? he has worked to a 12.20 tune over 15.1 innings of four tries, with 27 hits and 11 walks allowed vs. only five strikeouts. There just is not much there, and with both physical and mental fatigue as issues this is the wrong lineup to face, particularly in this ballpark on a night that will bring a favorable hitter?s wind. It also means this Total is too low. Cole Hamels brings the appearance of ?form? right now, but that is what happens when face the Mets twice, the Pirates, Nationals and Giants within a span of five weeks. The Astros read him well in Houston four starts back, scoring four runs on eight hits over six innings, he has had particular problems with Lance Berkman (3.53 lifetime in 17 at-bats) and Miguel Tejada (an impressive 6-8, with three doubles). And while Carlos Lee may only sport a .214 average over his 14 at-bats, those trips to the plate have produced seven rbi?s. There is also that matter of the Phillie bullpen for the latter stages, with Charlie Manuel still not set with his closer situation despite the playoffs being only a week away, which means ample opportunities can be available in the latter stages.

1000* - Carolina Panthers, 500* - Detroit w/Porcello over Blackburn If you ask me, both QB's have issues with the dreaded turnover, and when you have such a case, you must look to the "value" in the line the oddsmakers put out there, and tonight I see that line "value" resting with the underdog.

I just get the feeling this line is a little too high, and it is a little high because of the fact the Cowboys are playing in their new stadium once again under the prime time lights.

Let's face facts, if Carolina drops this one, they move to 0-3 heading into their bye week, and while they may very well be 0-3 after this game, I have to believe that the "desperate" Panthers will muster an effort that keeps this one close.

The Panthers are 28-15-1 under John Fox as the road dog, and the Cowboys are just 4-5 their last 9 as a home favorite.

Dallas guts it out, and gets the win, but Carolina takes it where it counts, at the ticket window.

Take the points.

1000? - Carolina Panthers

Big baseball series gets underway in the Motor City tonight, as Minnesota and Detroit go out for the AL Central title.

Rick Porcello just lost at Minnesota 2 starts ago, but this time around he gets to face the Twins in the comfort of his home park where the righty is 8-3 for the season.

Nick Blackburn gets the counter for Minny, and Blackburn has won his last pair of starts, but is just 4-7 away from home this season.

Blackburn tossed a complete game win at the Tigers back in July, but my money tonight will be on Detroit to take the critical 1st game, especially in their home park where they are 48-26 for the year.

Minnesota is still below .500 for the year on the road, at 36-40, and I think they will be on the shortside of this one tonight.

500? - Detroit w/Porcello over Blackbun

Matchup: Panthers at Cowboys

Analysis: This is a critical early season game for 0-2 Carolina. Dallas’ debut in their new digs resulted in a disappointing loss as the Giants rallied for a final drive that led to the winning FG. The Cowboys clearly have the better talent but Carolina has a clear edge in coaching with John Fox having a better grasp of what‘s taking place on the field than does Dallas‘ Wade Phillips. That makes getting nearly double digits an attractive take for a team that can run the ball. The Panthers have lost all 6 meetings with Dallas this decade but 5 of them have been by a TD or less. And at 0-2 a repeat of their Playoff appearance from last season is in jeopardy so expect an all out effort against a team that repeatedly shows an inability to close out games. Carolina QB Delhomme had a much better effort against Atlanta than in the opener vs Atlanta providing a much needed confidence boost. Dallas wins but by just 3 or 4 points.

1 UNIT” NFL SIDE (Cowboys -8’ at home versus Panthers in a 8:35 eastern kickoff on ESPN):

Even though one of the league’s most popular teams are involved, the line on tonight’s game has actually dropped from an opening figure of 9’ points which gives us a little value with Dallas. Of course the Cowboys brand new billion-dollar pleasure palace was unveiled last Sunday Night on National-TV and the home team ended up losing outright. One of the main reasons why tonight’s line has dropped is because this is basically a make-or-break game for Carolina who was a divisional champion just one year ago. The Panthers once proud defense has taken a serious hit as a pair of tackles have already been lost for the entire season with Leonard Lewis (broken ankle) being the latest casualty. Basically the lack of pressure delivered by the defensive line has exposed the secondary which is one of the reasons why the Panthers have allowed on average a whopping 33 points per game so far. Of course matters are not helped with all of the TURNOVERS (9) that have been committed by the offense which right now is the most in the entire NFL. Dating back to that fateful home playoff loss of a year ago, Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme alone has accounted for 12 turnovers with most of them being critical interceptions at inopportune times. My database research indicates that Carolina’s sluggish 0-2 start is actually critical to handicapping this particular contest. In the past 12 years Dallas has cost bettors a lot of money (30-45 SU/29-51-4 ATS) when facing opponents with a “winning” record. That pattern so far in 2009 has held true as the Cowboys covered the spread against a struggling team (Tampa) and lost the spot a week ago (Giants) on National-TV against a winning opponent. There have already been rumors floating that if Carolina decides at some point to fire head coach John Fox that current CBS broadcaster and former Steelers coach Bill Cowher is anxious to take over the team. Cowher lives in the state of North Carolina and it appears that he has been willing to wait until the Panthers make a head coaching move. I want all of you to be aware that there is some statistical risk with the Cowboys this evening as they have actually “failed” to cover the spread (0-7) the last seven times they have been cast as a Monday home favorite. But Dallas can ill afford to lose consecutive home games and there will actually not be as much pressure as a week ago when they opened a brand new facility which in turn brings a lot of expectations attached. Yesterday we saw a Tennessee squad off a sensational 2008 campaign fall to 0-3 and tonight we have a similar scenario involving Carolina despite all of their talent.

DALLAS COWBOYS -8.5 over Carolina

Sorry the analysis was late today, I got caught traveling and doing radio
shows so I apologize.

A couple of things about this game and let's start with the most obvious
which is the line. 8.5 points seems awfully high for a Dallas team that
didn't win last week but you know what, I think people will get trapped
onto Carolina and will pay for it.

Dallas had the NY Giants on the ropes. The Giants are probably the best
team in the NFC and a top 3 team in the entire league. Washington couldn't
move on their defense, Tampa Bay didn't get their first - first down
until 5 minutes were left in the 3rd quarter yesterday yet Dallas moved at
will on NY and pretty much dominated the game, they just were unlucky with
turnovers.

Dallas is the better team by far and the oddsmakers know it, which is why
this spread is so high.

From a football standpoint, I do believe the Cowboys have a major mismtach
when it comes to their D-Line against the Panthers O-Line. Dallas is just
way to fast and Delhomme has shown a great propensity for doing one of two
things this season. He either gets jittery, pulls the ball down and gets
sacked or he hurries his throws and that results in INT's. He doesn't
trust his O-Line ar all, I knew that watching what he did against the
Eagles.

Dallas is the play here tonight. They will bounce back and get their first
win in their new stadium. Go with the Cowboys.

Minnesota vs. Detroit
Play: Minnesota

Although the Twins have not played particularly well here in the Motor City this season (2-3), they have taken 9 of 14 head-to-head meetings with the Tigers overall this season and are clearly the hotter of the two teams heading into this four-game set. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire consistently gets his team to play well in the month of September and this year is no different with 11 wins in the last 13 games. Detroit, meanwhile, is struggling with just seven wins in their last 18 games, which is why this division race has gotten so tight. There will be a tremendous amount of pressure on Rick Porcello, the Tigers young starter, who has lost the last two times he’s faced the Twins. Nick Blackburn has looked very sharp in his past two starts (1.35 ERA) and was very effective in beating Porcello the last time he faced them, allowing just one earned run in a complete game 6-2 victory. As the manager of Minnesota, Gardenhire is 27-15 on the road when his team is seeking revenge for a loss as a home favorite. We’re taking the hotter team as we look for a tight division race to get even tighter. Minnesota is our 10* AL Central Showdown Winner.
