(7) BOSTON BRUINS
(8) DALLAS STARS

TAKE "OVER"Boston has gotten off to a weak start because of defense, giving up 4 goals per game. They take on a hot (and unbeaten) Dallas team that is averaging 4 per game. The Dallas Stars talked about getting off to a fast start at their morning skate. Then they put that plan into action. Brenden Morrow scored twice in the opening 9 minutes of Dallas' four-goal first period, and Marty Turco stopped 29 shots for his 37th career shutout in the Stars' 6-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night. Brad Richards added a goal and two assists. This looks like an offensive show, play the Bruins/Stars Over the total.

Karl Garrett 20 DIMER - RUTGERS....10 DIMER - ANGELS-YANKEES OVER (Lackey vs. Sabathia) 20 DIMER - RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS

After getting humiliated by Cincinnati at home on the first week of the season, Rutgers has rebounded to win their last 4, although 2 have come against the likes of Howard, and Texas Southern.

Still, I give the Knights a great chance at springing the upset here, as they are at home, and they have also won the last 4 against Pittsburgh, while going 3-1 against the spread along the way.

Pittsburgh has played some tough games of late, as 3 weeks ago they blew a big lead at NC State in a loss, they rebounded the next week with a road win at Louisville, and then this past week they needed a last second field goal to nip Connecticut. You have a feeling the Panthers could be a little beat-up when they hit the field tonight.

Rutgers has covered their last 4 as a home underdog, and are 10-2 their last dozen when getting points.

The points work again for the Scarlet Knights.

10 DIMER - LA ANGELS-NY YANKEES OVER (Lackey vs. Sabathia)

The chances they play this game may not be too good based upon the weather report, but if they do, I like the OVER.

Both teams have played some UNDERS this postseason, as the Angels were UNDER in 2 of 3 versus Boston, while the Yankees played ALL 3 UNDER versus Minnesota, but these teams did play 3 of the 4 regular season meetings against each other in New York OVER the total.

They also ended the regular season 6-3-1 OVER in their 10 meetings this year.

Both Lackey, and Sabathia have had their struggles against the others team, and this total is not so big that a big frame by either team can't squeeze us OVER.

Mark the G-Man down for an OVER in Game 1 of the ALCS.

BUFFALO -½ -1.07 over NY Islanders (REG) Pinnacle
The Sabres are another team out of the gate quickly with three wins and no regulation losses. Four games does not make a season but its hot start is not an aberration. Here’s a team that’s getting tremendous play from its defense and goaltending and they broke out offensively last game with a 6-2 pounding over the Red Wings. In fact, the Sabres have allowed just four goals against in its four games this year. Ryan Miller looks like the Ryan Miller of three years ago when he was considered to be among the elite. His play teetered off somewhat in the last couple of years but he really appears to be fully back on dialed in. Not only have the Sabres won its four games but they’ve dominated the play each and every game including its OT loss to the Habs. Chris Butler and Tyler Myers are two outstanding young defensemen and it was only a matter of time before the offense got going. With Vanek out tonight, you’ll see this team did down even deeper, as they can’t wait to take the ice. The Islanders are an improved outfit despite being winless. They’ll be plenty of opportunities to play them at a decent price but this is an extremely tough assignment, as the Sabres are feeling it right now and are just skating circles around everyone. Play: Buffalo -½ -1.07 (Risking 2.14 units to win 2).

Atlanta +1.66 over NEW JERSEY (REG) Pinnacle
The Devils are 0-2 at home and they have just one regulation win thus far, a 3-2 victory in Florida in a game they scored with under five minutes left in the third. They did play a solid game in Florida and followed that up with another outstanding effort against Washington but this is a big tag on them when they’re not going so good. The Devils return home from a short three-game trip where they were outscored 8-4 in its two losses. Furthermore, and perhaps more important is that the Devils has Carolina in here tomorrow night and that was the team that knocked them out of the first round of the playoffs last season. The Thrashers have 18 goals in four games and the offense remains a dangerous one. Ilya Kovalchuk looks very comfortable playing with Nik Andropov and the second line of Slava Kozlov, Todd White, and Maxim Afinogenov can do some serious damage as well. The price and situation here appears to be a good one for this visitor, as they’re a dangerous team to begin with and they could easily catch the Devils looking ahead to tomorrow or even pressing a bit at home, where they have not performed well. Play: Atlanta +1.66 (Risking 2 units).

Trace Adams 1000* - Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 500* - Angels-Yankees OVER (Lackey vs. Sabathia) Tonight is the night the Panthers gas tank hits "E".

Pittsburgh kicked a last second field goal on Saturday to hold on for the home win over UConn, while Rutgers was cruising to a 42-0 skunking of Texas Southern.

The Panthers have played at NC State (blew a BIG lead in that one), played at Louisville, and of course just got by Connecticut as I mentioned above. I have a feeling this road game is going to find them spent.

Series numbers also point towards a Rutgers win, as the Knights have won the last 4 meetings, going 3-1 against the spread, and Rutgers is 10-2 as a home dog since the '06 season, including a perfect 4-for-4 last season!

The last time Rutgers was on national TV, they were blasted by Cincinnati on Labor Day weekend.

Look for the Scarlet Knights to make amends for that clunker with a competitive effort tonight.

Take Rutgers.

1000? - Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Kinda pricy to back the Yankees tonight, and while I think they will win, I can't tell you to lay this number. Instead, I will tell you to take the OVER, as these teams have a history of "slugfests" of late.

3 of the 4 meetings in the Bronx this year did go OVER the total, and the teams finished 6-3-1 OVER the price in their 10 season meetings this year.

I know Lackey and Sabathia are their teams #1's respectively, but Lackey has allowed 12 runs over his last 27 innings of work against the Yanks, while Sabathia allowed a whopping 9 runs in his 14 innings of work against the Angels this year in 2 starts, both losses!

Have to play the OVER in the Bronx in Game 1.

500? - LA Angels-NY Yankees OVER - Lackey vs. Sabathia

New York Islanders at Buffalo (7:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: Buffalo -180 (moneyline)

Two teams that have been getting opposite results will face-off in Buffalo tonight as the Sabres put their unbeaten mark to the test against the winless Islanders. Although the Sabres did suffer an OT loss in their opener, they have been playing superbly on the defensive end. They are also getting outstanding goal tending from Ryan Miller, who has yet to allow more than two to slip through the net in each of the four games. The season shows just five goals allowed or 1.125 per contest. That will be a tough chore for the Islanders’ offense that has generated just nine goals in four games, just over two per game, as on the other end they have seen 13 slip through the net. You can't feel too good either about the fact that the Islanders are 0-9 in their last nine as a dog of +151 to +200. The Sabres are sporting a 42-16-2 mark at home against clubs that are .400 or less. I'm going with the Sabres in this one.

PICK: Pittsburgh Your pick will be graded at: -5.5 SPORTSBETTING EXPERT: Nick Parsons TITLE: *9* FRIDAY NIGHT NCAAF "PUNI$HER"! REASON FOR PICK: For a number of different reasons I feel the value in this game is on the visiting side: “This will be our biggest challenge,” Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt said when referring to his teams road game vs. Rutgers this week. RB Dion Lewis, who is sixth in the nation in rushing with 738 rushing yards and averages 5.6 yards a carry, anchors a steadily improving offense; QB Bill Stull has 13 TD passes and only three picks; WR Jonathan Baldwin is just two yards shy of having four consecutive 100-yard receiving games. On what is expected to be a rainy/cold night, Lewis will be leaned upon even more than normal, and he'll also have to face the conference's top run defense to boot. Pitt's defense is one of the nations best though; the Panthers average more than four sacks per game and are ranked third in the country in that category. Despite having struggled vs. Rutgers in recent play, Pitt is 5-1 SU its last six overall, 9-4 ATS its last 13 on the road, 8-3 SU its last 11 on the road and 4-2 SU its last six on the road vs. the Scarlet Knights.

On the other side of the field: Rutgers' true freshman QB, Tom Savage, will be entering his second straight game after suffering a concussion against Florida International; the Rutgers offensive line has allowed 14 sacks through five games, the most in the Big East. The Scarlet Knights pass defense is its achilles heel and it will struggle again this week against Stull and his speedy receivers. Rutgers is just 1-3 ATS in its last four overall and a horrible 0-3 ATS this season in front of the hometown crowd.

Bottom line: Having lost the last four times they've played the Scarlet Knights, I expect the Panthers to play with "revenge" on their minds. Stull will be the difference in this one as he'll look to exploit the Scarlet Knights suspect secondary; look for PITTSBURGH to move to 3-1 ATS on the road this year and for Rutgers to fall to 0-3 ATS against conference opponents! *9*

6* Widow Wiseguy Pitt/Rutgers E SP N Big East Brawl on Pittsburgh -3(-110 at Bodog)

Rutgers has yet to earn a win against a good opponent. They lost their opener, 47-15, to Cincinnati and have played cupcakes in the likes of Howard, Florida International, Maryland and Texas Southern ever since. Pitt has been battle-tested this season, with 5 straight games against quality opponents. They won 4 of those 5, and should have beaten NC State on the road after blowing a huge lead in the second half. The Panthers are the better team here Friday, and not even home-field advantage can save Rutgers. Pittsburgh is scoring 40.0 points/game on the road this season against the likes of Buffalo, NC State and Louisville and neither of those three teams would be considered pushovers. This is a balanced offense, rushing for 166 yards/game and throwing for 222 yards/game. Rutgers is very one-dimensional since Mike Teel is no longer under center. The Scarlet Knights rush 42 times/game and throw 23 times/game. So the key here is how Pittsburgh stops the run. Well, Pitt is allowing just 109 rushing yards/game and 2.9 yards/carry and they've played some very good running teams in NC State, Navy, Louisville and Connecticut. So it's not like they are playing the run well against teams that throw the ball a lot. All four of those teams rely mostly on the run. This is just a mismatch across the board, and the only way Pitt wouldn't win this game tonight is if they shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers. Pitt has only turned the ball over 5 times in 6 games en route to a 5-1 start, so we really like their chances. Rutgers is 1-10 ATS (-10.0 Units) in home games after a game where they committed no turnovers since 1992. They are losing against the spread 91% of the time in this spot. The Panthers win the turnover battle, along with every other phase of this one because they are simply the more complete team. Take Pittsburgh and lay the points.

3* Friday Night SMASH (ESPN) Pitt -5
Rutgers may be 4-1, but it has played a weak level of competition. The only quality opponent it has faced is Cincinnati and the Bearcats defeated the Scarlet Knights 47-15 on the road. They key is that Rutgers allowed 396 passing yards to Cincy and I am confident that the Panthers passing attack will be able to exploit the Rutgers secondary as well. Pitt QB Bill Stull is having a great season through the air. He came last week, throwing for 268 yards and two touchdowns and I can't see the Knights slowing down the hook up combo of Stull to Jonathan Baldwin. Pitt has already proven that it can go on the road and win in Big East play, defeating Louisville 35-10 as a 7-point favorite two weeks ago on a Friday night. The last, and most important factor, is the fact that Pitt has lost 4 straight to Rutgers. Pitt has the better team this year and they will have their revenge. Lay the points.

Today's Pick: RUTGERS
Another ESPN Big East battle kicks off Friday night when Rutgers plays host to Pittsburgh in New Brunswick. The Knights have been like money in the bank in games off a double-digit under head coach Greg Schiano, going 13-2-1 ATS when taking points, including 10-0 ATS if they scored 34 or more points in their previous game. With Rutgers owning a rush defense that ranks No. 5 in the land, allowing a mere 65 RYPG, and Pittsburgh a pussycat-like 2-12 ATS as conference road favorites off a spread loss, we'll grab the points with the Knights. We recommend a 3-unit play on Rutgers

Mr. IWS

Lenny Del Genio
Today's Pick: RUTGERS
We're going to take advantage of a line that we think is moving the wrong way as well as some inclement weather that should keep the prolific Pitt passing attack in check. Temperature is supposed to be about 39 degrees at kickoff with 10 to 15 MPH winds. This will cause ultra-conservative Panthers HC Dave Wannstedt to want to run the ball more than he should, keeping this game closer than it should. And the Scarlet Knights know how to beat this team, having done it four straight years by an average of 11 PPG. Last year, the 54 points scored by Rutgers was the most allowed by a Pitt defense since a 60-6 loss to Notre Dame back in 1996. The difference in this game could come down to freshness as Pitt is off BB Big East games, including a close win over UConn last week (trailed 21-6), while all Rutgers has done during that time is walkover Texas Southern 42-0. Rutgers is our Friday Night **LIGHTS OUT** Winner.

PICK: Los Angeles Angels: +1.5 (-135) / 5 units

The Yankees had the best record in the league this season and won 103 regular season games, but only one of the past four teams to win 100+ games have even made it to the World Series and none of them have won the title. The Angels are a dangerous underdog in this series and they present value with John Lackey on the mound tonight. Lackey faced the Yankees once this season, taking the win in a 5-4 game in Anaheim and giving up just two runs and six hits in seven innings of work. Lackey has pitched well this season with a 3.68 ERA and 1.247 WHIP in 28 starts with a 143/48 strikeout/walk ratio.

C.C. Sabathia has struggled against Anaheim this season and is 0-2 against the Angels in two starts, giving up 10 runs in 13.3 innings of work for a terrible 6.08 ERA and a 1.575 WHIP. Sabathia is just 5-7 against the Angels with a mediocre 4.72 ERA and 1.460 WHIP during his career. Torii Hunter (20-68), Chone Figgins (5-16), Howie Kendrick (8-12), Maicer Izturis (5-10), Bobby Abreu (3-9), Kendry Morales (3-9) and Mike Napoli (3-9) all hit Sabathia well. The Angels remain a fantastic offensive squad this season and they have been particularly strong versus left handed pitchers on the road, averaging 6.1 runs per Nine innings and batting .294 as a team.

“2 UNIT” COLLEGE FOOTBALL SIDE (Rutgers +6 at home versus Pittsburgh in a 8:05 eastern kickoff on ESPN):

It is easy to see why the line on this contest has exploded from an opening figure of 3’ points as most bettors still have fresh in their minds the opening week ESPN televised disaster when Rutgers was squashed 47-7 at home by Cincinnati/ Since that debacle the Scarlet Knights have played the “sisters of the poor” going up twice against Division I-AA competition along with a pair of Division I squads (Florida International, Maryland) who have struggled out of the gate. But in my opinion the easy opening schedule for Rutgers was a stroke of brilliance by head coach Greg Schiano as his troops are breaking in some very YOUNG players including freshman quarterback Tom Savage who has already thrown for nearly 700 total yards. Even though the competition has been weak, the many youngsters on the Scarlet Knights roster have gained invaluable experience along with confidence. I for one have complete respect for Greg Schiano who is now in year #9 directing a Rutgers program that used to be in complete shambles. What I will never forget was when Schiano actually turned down the then vacant Miami head coaching job when the Hurricanes came calling. For a coach to show that much dedication for a relatively small program is unheard of in college football and tonight the Scarlet Knights have a chance at retribution on a National-TV level. Tonight marks the 25th consecutive year that Rutgers and Pittsburgh have faced each other in what is one of the longest Big East conference rivalries. Even though the Panthers have dominated the long range numbers, Rutgers has reeled off 4 consecutive outright WINS in this series and have suddenly become a force. What has caught my attention regarding Rutgers is their knack of creating opportunities via the takeaway as they forced the opposition into 15 TURNOVERS in the past four outings. I will admit a veteran Scarlet Knights offensive line has already allowed 14 sacks but that has helped inflate tonight’s price tag. I will also admit that Pittsburgh quarterback Bill Stull has virtually come out of nowhere with an excellent ratio of 13 touchdown passes versus just 3 interceptions. Stull has looked great with the help of a Panthers rushing attack that is averaging 5 yards per carry, but consider they are being led by true freshman Dion Lewis who at this point may be a bit overvalued. Turning to the subject of WEATHER tonight we will see windy-and-wet conditions, but I want all of you to be aware that Rutgers already has already played in a driving RAIN storm at Maryland earlier which helps acclimate them to adverse field conditions. Even though it was against a weak opponent, the Scarlet Knights are coming off a 42-0 triumph where the defense pitched a shutout. Rutgers just happens to be a positive 4-1-1 ATS when coming off a “margin” victory of 20+ points. Rutgers also has successfully COVERED the spread 10 of the past 14 times they have been cast as a home underdog. In the eight years where Greg Schiano has been head coach, Rutgers has gone a stellar 15-5 ATS versus quality opponents who win by an average of 10+ points per contest. To add even more icing to the cake, the UNDERDOG in this Rutgers/Pittsburgh rivalry series has COVERED the spread 6 times in the past 7 years!

ROAD FAVE 1*: Philadelphia Flyers -135
Tough card tonight and this game will be no easy win for the Flyers, who outmatch the Panthers on just about every position. Florida is due to win, but that doesn't mean they will. They have serious problems and it may get ugly tonight. The Flyers are 11-4-1 in the last 16 meetings in Florida and 8-2 ATS (+10.4 Units) in road games on Friday nights over the last 2 seasons. .

Minnesota vs. Edmonton
Pick: Minnesota

Keys to selection: Here’s one of those games where the goalie just owns you! Backstrom is 13-1 SU vs. the Oilers lifetime and the Wild are hitting .500 in their last 10 trips to Edmonton. Wild are playing desperate hockey right now and Khabibulin hasn’t had much success vs. Minnesota, he’s 3-7 SU vs. Minnesota lifetime.

Database Tip: When EDMONTON team played as a home team - Vs Division Opponent - Total is 5.5 - Allowed 4 goals AGAINST in their last game; the Oilers are 3-9 SU in this spot.

Ron’s Prediction: Minnesota 3 Edmonton 2

Pittsburgh at Rutgers
Pick: Rutgers

After an opening week loss to Cincinnati the Scarlet Knights have rebounded in a big way. Only now we know that the Bearcats are one of the best teams in the nation. Tonight's conditions really favor Rutgers a lot better. It will be cold, rainy and windy. Rutgers runs the ball better and defends the run better than Pitt. Rutgers does have a young QB, but he is very mature and as long as he can hand the ball off and make short accurate throws he should be fine. Pittsburgh is about as night and day of a team as you are going to get and always seem to disappoint. Look for Rutgers to cover the number.

*200 New York Yankees -172
I am taking the Yankees tonight for the win in Game 1. I have the a Yankees starter CC Sabathia as 14-1 SU as a Home starter and he pitcher more than 109 pitches in his last start. I also have the Yankees as 29-11 SU since 2007 at home when they lost the last time they faced this starting pitcher. Finally, we have the Yankees as 40-10 SU since 2005 as a favorite vs a team that has won at least their last three games. Take the Yankees for the win.

*200 Rutgers +6 (This line has already moved to 6', buy the hook to 7 if you can get it tonight!)
The weather will be cold in new Jersey tonight, and with 15mph wind I predict Dave Wannstedts Panthers to be sloppy in the air, and stopped on the ground. Rutgers should be rested for this game, and Pitt is coming of back to back big East games. Let's look at a couple of trends that favor a Rutgers cover tonight. Rutgers is 13-2-1 ATS as a dog, including 10-0 ATS if they scored 34 or more points in their previous game. Rutgers rush defense is ranked 5th, and only allows 65 yards per game. Pittsburgh is 2-12 ATS as conference road favorites off an ATS loss.

*200 Dallas Stars Over 5.5
I am taking the Stars vs the Bruins over the total tonight. I have the the Bruins going over in 4 of their last 5 games. I also have Stars going Over the total in 5 of their last 6 games. I think both these teams score a lot tonight to drive us over the total.
