MREAST NCAAB THURSDAY THRILLER

The Wright St. Raiders have played tough defensively all season. They have held 10 of their opponents to 57 points or less, and I expect this one to play in the 50s. They have also played 7 of their last 9 kined games to the under. Wisconsin Green Bay has now played under in each of their last 5 conference games, and has averaged just 57ppg in the last 4. These teams have historically played under in Green Bay, as the last 4 have all faled to reach the total. I'm going with the under in this one.

NY RANGERS -½ -1.08 over Ottawa (REG)
This one is pretty much a non-brainer and until the Senators show something else, there’s no reason whatsoever to not keep wagering against them. Again, this is a beaten team before they even step on the ice. They’ve dropped five in a row and have been outscored 22-5 over that stretch. They’ve scored one goal or less in four of those five games. Right now they can’t score, they can’t prevent goals and both goaltenders, be it Elliott or Leclaire pray their name isn’t called today because both have no confidence. Meanwhile, the Rangers are among the hottest teams in the league. They have one regulation loss over its last 13 games. In other words, they’ve picked up points in 12 of its last 13 and should have am easy time of it against this physically and mentally damaged invader. Well, it’s rarely easy in the NHL but as long as the Rangers show up, and nothing suggests they won’t, they’ll beat this team like everybody else has. Play: NY Rangers -½ -1.08 (Risking 2.16 units to win 2).

Dallas +1.36 over MONTREAL (REG)
The Stars are going bad, real bad in fact and have not picked up a single point in five straight road games. Overall the Stars have slipped down to 11th place in the West after winning just once in its last six games. They’re coming off a 6-3 loss in Philly and that score is really not a true indication of how they played. They definitely outplayed the Flyers in the first period and were looking good early in the second after tying it 1-1. What transpired next was a couple of quick Flyer goals followed by a slew of bad penalties and before they knew it they were down big. This team is not as bad as its current slide suggests and its biggest problem has been the inconsistent goaltending of Marty Turco. What is noteworthy here is that the players are jacked up for tonight, as they make a rare appearance in one of hockey’s hot beds. The Stars have played just once in Montreal over the past seven years so you know they’ll be ready to go for sure. Besides, the Canadiens have a ton more appeal as the dog than they do as the chalk. This is a team that struggles to score and although they’re also very difficult to score against, this appears to be the right setting for an upset, as the Habs have Ottawa on deck and again, the Stars will be extra jacked up. Play: Dallas +1.36 (Risking 2 units).

PHOENIX +1.20 over New Jersey (REG)
The Coyotes have dropped three in a row and four of its last five but you should never count this team out. They’re one of the few teams in the NHL that have avoided prolonged losing streaks because they play their hearts out almost every shift. In fact, just to give you an idea of how tough they’ve been, this is the Coyotes first three-game losing streak of the year. They Coyotes will play with an extra sense of urgency while the Devils may not. New Jersey is coming off a very tough 1-0 OT at MSG. They will only be out to the West Coast for one game, this one, and then they’ll head to Colorado and will conclude its four-game trip on Long Island. The Devils are in top spot in the East with 65 points. Most teams traveling to the coast will get a few days in the sun with consecutive games in L.A., Phoenix, San Jose or Anaheim. This is a one and done for the Devils so fun in the sun may be more appealing than a game in Phoenix, where they’ve played just once in the past six years. Definitely a great shot to catch the Devils not at their best. Play: Phoenix +1.20 (Risking 2 units).

Utah is 13-6 ATS their 19 home games and they are one of the most balanced teams in the NBA with six players averaging double figures. The Cavaliers don't have balance as Lebron James and Mo Williams are taking more than half the teams shots on most nights. The underdog in this series is 5-2 ATS the last 7 meetings. This is a tough spot for the Cavs as they play their fourth straight road game. This game is in Utah where the air is rare. We will side the home lovin' Jazz. "NO BRAINER" PLAY ON UTAH

Game: Gonzaga at St. Marys (11:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: St. Marys -4 (-105)

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have ruled the roost in the West Coast Conference, but a new player has been developing and emerging, and looks to have the upper hand here. The Gaels have been knocking on the door, but this looks to be the year they break through. For the first time the Gaels will have had that edge over the Zags as Omar Sanhan will be the best player on the floor. Sanhan is a beast to contend with inside averaging a double-double. He is not alone however. The Gaels’ twin towers also include Ben Allen, and he is at 10 points per game and 8 boards as well as a solid playmaker in Mickey O'Connell dishing out 108 assists to just 44 turnovers. The Bulldogs took a hit from graduation and are still talented, but have lost a ton of experience which will hurt them in this one vs. a team that is hungry to knock them off, and for once has the better team. I'll go with St. Mary's here.

Butler is 56-4 Straight up their last 60 home games including 6-0 this year. The Bulldogs return all five starters from last years team. Butler plays with revenge from a loss to Cleveland St in the Horizon league Championship last year. The Bulldogs are led by are led by Gordon Hayward and his 16.8 points a game. Hayward can play both guard and forward. Shelvin Mack scores 15 points a game and team leader Matt Howard scores just under 11 points a game. Butler has won 20 or more games in four straight years. Cleveland St is 5-25 ATS when they lose straight up vs. a team with revenge. The Vikings are just 7-10 straight up this year and they have 3 double digit scores. St Mary's over Gonzaga(11pm) line has gotten out of hand on this one. What started out as a 2.5 point favorite is now a 5 point fave. I don't think st Mary's is that much of a favorite. It is now a no play. If the line should go back down to 3 tonight then play it. All of these ranked vs unranked games have ended up as 1-3point wins so with the spread going up it is now a no play.

other plays:
1* Tenn-Chattanooga -1.5 over Citadel(7pm)- Chatt has found it's groove after playing a couple of top tier teams in Ga tech and Murray st. The Moccasins have reeled off 5 in a row, all by double digits. Tenn-Chatt has won the last 10 meetings vs Citadel. It isn't a hex that is like N.Carolina over Clemson(till yesterday), but 10 in a row is hard to ignore. When you win that many in a row it is just a style mismatch that repeats itself until something major changes. It is also the same reasoning as the Michigan st play yesterday.

3*Tenn-Tech over Tenn-Martin(9pm) - Tenn Martin is one of the worst teams in Div 1 hoops. They have yet to win vs a Div 1 school this year. This game is a Rivalry game for these 2 teams, one that has been lopsided in Martin's favor recently. Tonight is Tech's turn to give the beat down. Even in losing the last 3 games, Tech has shot over 50% from the field. With more solid offense like that tonight Tenn-Martin will be powerless to stop it. Both teams are bad defensively so a likely blowout score here will be 95-80.

This will seem strange but that is all for tonight. Nothing else fits the systems.

Chicago playing better basketball, fueled by their improved outside shooting lately. However, team have not faced a similar type Boston defense in recent memory. You have to go back 4+ weeks to find a similar offensive challenge. Bulls scored 87 pts vs. Lakers on 12/15, 80 vs. same Celtics on 12/12 & 87 vs Cleveland on 12/4. Plus, always more difficult to hit from outside on road. And, Da Bulls live & die by the outside shot (no real inside threat; Noah??). Boston #2 defensive team in league, allowing only 93.8 ppg. In addition, Celts #6 in fg% allowed & 3pt fg% allowed (44.6, 33.6). Team only allowing 5.6 3pt fgpg (#5). More importantly, Boston playing second b2b in 5 nights and will be missing Garnett & Wallace. Hence, team should have tired legs and will have to rely on more defense tonight IMO. As a result, believe Boston will contest every shot (no easy buckets) & try to slow game down and control possessions, especially late in game.

The "sharps" hit this one almost right away. This line opened at Saint Mary's -3 and was hit within minutes, pushing it to -3.5. And just minutes after that it was hit again, pushing it to -4. And that line move is despite the fact that most of the bets coming in have been on Gonzaga, including money-line bets and exotics. I'm disappointed that I missed out on the -4, but I feel we still have a strong play at -4.5.

Gonzaga has only played two true road games this season, and they were beaten by Michigan State in their only big road test. St. Mary's has been extremely tough at home, and I like the fact that the Gaels are one of very few teams that can match Gonzaga's size. St. Mary's actually has the 4th-best effective height rating in thenation at +5.3, which tops the Bulldogs' #13 ranking at +3.9.

When looking at Gonzaga's road performances compared to Saint Mary's home performances, I see several huge edges for the Gaels. First, the Gaels score 87.8 ppg on 52.2% shooting at home, and they'll be going against a Gonzaga road defense allowing 76.5 ppg on 47% shooting. But Gonzaga's road offense, which averages 76 points on 41.7% shooting, would face a Gaels' home defense allowing only 64.1 ppg on just 40% shooting. Even if we look at overall numbers, Saint Mary's holds edges in rebound margin, free-throw shooting, and 3-point shooting.

Bottom line: The "sharps" definitely have their money on the Gaels. And looking at the stats from these two teams, I can see why. Gonzaga's #14 ranking is just a bull's eye for the unranked Gaels. And having the game on national TV (ESPN2) only adds to the Gaels' motivation. Lay it with Saint Mary's.
