MURRAY ST +3 (CBB Thursday: 2:30 ET)

Going against the public view here as I load this up and that never, ever bothers me in the least, quite the opposite actually. Vandy gettting the nod from bettors because of the conference they come out of. Sometimes that argument holds water and sometimes not. This Murray State club easily clears the eye ball test here with me when comparing the Racers with the Commodores. Murray State has prevailed in 30 games this year guys and despite the knocks on their less than stellar schedule I still liked what I saw when they handily knocked off a quality Morehead State club in the Ohio Valley conference tourney title game by a convincing 62-51 count. The stubborn fact is this Racers squad not only beat teams along the way this season, they beat them badly. Also, Murray State is one of only two teams leading their conferences in both scoring and scoring defense, the other team, you guessed it, the Kansas Jayhawks. I respect Vanderbilt but feel the value here is with the points and Murray State guys.

Thursday's Lineup

30 Dime – SAN DIEGO STATE

15 Dime – NORTHERN IOWA

10 Dime – WASHINGTON

SAN DIEGO STATE --- I am absolutely not falling for this trap line and neither should you. This line BEGS you to take Tennessee, doesn't it? I mean, think about it... here we have a well-known team from the SEC against a bunch of "nobodies" from the Mountain West Conference, and I've actually heard a few people say that if San Diego State didn't get their "miracle" win against UNLV they wouldn't even be in this tournament. Really? Maybe they're right... shoot, I hope they are. If that's the case, that means this line is even more screwed up than I originally thought. A 6-seed giving three or four points to an 11-seed is a joke, especially when the 11-seed has to travel all the way across the country for a night game. Either Vegas really screwed up here or they are just waiting to cash in on all the fools who bet Tennessee.

Honestly, has there been a more erratic team in college hoops this year than the Vols? The same team that beat Kansas and Kentucky also lost to Florida, Vanderbilt (twice), Georgia, and USC. And I'm not sure I understand the notion that the SEC is some power conference... remember, this isn't football, this is basketball. The SEC was no better than the Mountain West this year and it will be interesting to see how these two conferences fare when all is said and done.

San Diego State, on the other hand, has been one of the hotter teams to close out the season, dropping just one of their last 10 games, beating UNLV twice and New Mexico once along the way. After a two-point loss to lowly Wyoming and a 10-point loss at UNLV, the team had a players-only meeting to challenge each other, and from that January 13th meeting till today, the Aztecs have lost just three times (vs. BYU, at New Mexico, and at BYU again). This team is built on team defense and dominating the boards, and although Tennessee probably has the advantage at the guard spot, it's not a huge advantage like San Diego State will have inside.

In San Diego State's last win over UNLV, Kawhi Leonard had 16 points and 21 rebounds as the Aztecs won the battle of the boards 36-24. In fact, it's a rare occurrence when the Aztecs DON'T win the rebounding battle... and I have a feeling it's going to be the same today.

As a dog of between 1 and 4.5 points the Aztecs are a salty 4-1 ATS and 10-7 ATS in 17 games away from home. Tennessee is just 7-9-1 ATS away from Knoxville and 6-10-1 ATS in night games. I'm sorry, but I just don't believe in this year's Tennessee team with all the issues they've had to deal with. Great season for coach Pearl, but I think it ends tonight.

NORTHERN IOWA --- Tend to side with the better defensive team when the line is a basic pick 'em. This selection has nothing to do with UNLV or the fact they ended the season on the sour note by scoring 45 points in the MWC tournament. This selection is because I believe in Northern Iowa, I believe in their defensive toughness and I believe in C Jordan Edsleger. The Rebels have but one real advantage in this game... speed and quickness. If this game becomes a track meet I believe UNLV could win by 10 or more. But I don't believe for a second the Panthers will allow the Rebels to dictate the tempo. In at least 90% of their games the Panthers dictated the very "boring" pace which led to a lot of 58-54 type games. And if you consider this team hits around 75% of their free throws, it won't matter if they are hitting open jumpers or drawing fouls by penetrating to the cup, Northern Iowa is going to score. UNLV will do everything they can to quicken the pace, but when UNI imposes its will on you, it's nearly impossible to make them run with you. I believe Northern Iowa is the real deal and could cause problems not only today but for the rest of the tournament, depending on how far they go.

WASHINGTON --- With only two teams from this conference in the tournament, you'd expect both of them to play their very best in every game to represent. Although the Pac 10 gets a lot of criticism for being a very "average" conference, I still believe both Cal and Washington are quality teams that can make some noise against a few teams that might take them for granted. Today is a perfect example. Marquette played a very tough Big East schedule and finished with a winning record while Washington struggled to get above .500 and lost several games they should have won. But when you match two teams that have equal talent, can both shoot the 3 well, and don't play a ton of defense, not to mention the fact you have a lot more size on one side than the other, you can't help but lean one way. Washington is on a seven-game winning streak and they're doing it by getting production from their guards, pounding the boards and getting timely scoring inside, and hitting their free throws. Nothing against Marquette, but I think they're catching Washington at the wrong time.

5 UNITS - RICHMOND -2

Profile: Richmond is being undervalued just for playing in the Atlantic 10. However, the Spiders are a very dangerous team in the tournament, capable of advancing much further than people expect. No one is noticing that Richmond has wins this season over tournament teams such as Old Dominion, Missouri, Xavier, Lehigh, and Florida. They have faced numerous teams from bigger conferences, so they will not be phased by facing a St. Mary's team from the West Coast Conference. St. Mary's highlight to the season came by beating Gonzaga in the conference tournament. The Gaels also have to travel the entire length of the country to play in Providence, Rhode Island, which will be played at 11:50am west coast time. The Spiders will move on to the next round with a point spread cover.

3 UNITS - BYU -5

Profile: Florida had finished the season going 4-6, including some losses to less than stellar teams like Georgia and South Carolina. The loss that is most striking though is their loss to Mississippi State in the SEC tournament, when their NCAA tournament hopes were on the line. The oddsmakers are telling the betting public something by making BYU this much of a favorite over them on a neutral court. The Cougars also have the added advantage of playing this game in Oklahoma City, which means that the Gators have much further to travel and probably less of an advantage with the crowd. BYU has several quality wins this season both at home and on the road as well. They also have much better guard play. I look for the Cougars to make a big statement over a team that probably shouldn't even be in the field.

Analysis:
I absolutely expect atleast 218 pts in this game tonight--& I woužldn't be surprised if DENVER puts up 125 themselves. Denver will be playing their 2nd game back at home off the long roadie--and as exepcted they were a bit sluggish in their 10 pt win over the Wizards. Denver is playing as good as anybody in the NBA & their offense is flat out clicking on all cylinders right now. They will be looking to push the ball, facing a HORNETS team who will be playing their 4th road game in 5 days--& are coming off a run and gun game at Golden St. last night. BOTH these teams will look to push the pace and the Horntes have some very capable scorers- in Collison, Thornton, and West--no doubt. Denver has just been a beast at home lately--as the OVER is (5-1 ATS) their last 6 home games. New Orleans flat out excels when they push the pace, as they have no real low post threat--and tend to struggle at times in the half court--they will need fast break points to keep it within reaching distance with Denver. I have a pretty stong LEAN to DENVER -13 as well here---

8* Tennessee

For a number of different reasons I believe the value in this contest is on Tennessee.

The Aztecs went 25-8, and 11-5 in the Mountain West Conference; they beat UNLV in the finals to take the tournament title.

One major thing working against San Diego State today is experience; this will be the first time any of these players have gone to the "Big Dance".

SDSU plays an eight man rotation, and is led by 6'7" freshman Kawhi Leonard (12.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 16 double-doubles). Leonard joins 6'8" Billy White (11.2, 4.4) and 6'9" Malcolm Thomas (11.0, 7.8) on the front line, a group that can match the Vols' front line of 6'7" J.P. Prince, 6'9" Wayne Chism, and 6'10" Brian Williams.

On the other side of the court: The Aztecs are a deep team and the every single one of the Vol's will have to be on top of his game; everyone, from Bobby Maze at point to Wayne Chism inside, will be ready to play great defense.

And that's something that the Volunteers have done well all year; defend and rebound.

Bottom line: I believe that the bottom line though comes down to experience; not only has most of the Tennessee roster been to March Madness before, we're led by three seniors - the Aztecs have only one senior after graduating four starters from last year's team, and start two freshmen.

This will not be an easy game, and the Vols will have to be extremely focused to win tonight; the "one game at a time" slogan could not be more true in this case; “We believe everything happened for a reason,” said Maze of his teams up-and-down season. “Emmanuel Negedu and the situation was difficult for all of us because he was like our brother. But he’s still with us now. And he’s one of the reasons why we are inspired to win this thing.”

Tennessee in a close one!

Marquette -1.5

Many have Marquette in the Elite 8 in their brackets, and while I am unsure they can go that deep, I am sure they can cover this number tonight. Big East versus Pac 10 in general is a mismatch. I hear alot about Washington being a scoring machine, but they face an oppoenet that is 6th in the nation in 3 point %, and a team who plays good defense allowing 64 ppg and they hit the boards hard and have good guards. Marquette also hits 75% of their free throws. Washington did play a Big East team this season and lost to Georgetown on a nuetral court. They also played Texas Tech from the Big 12 and lost that game. Better conference, battle tested and off a bitter loss to GT in the Big east Finals, look for a rest Marqette team to play better and win by 6-8 points. Play 1 Unit on Marquette.

Orlando -2.5

Orlando playing b2b & 4 in 5, but schedule not as taxing as it looks. Team has been home since 3/6, except for make-up game in Washington. Outside of Charlotte slip, Magic have made quick work of last 4 opponents. Hence, minutes played not as exhausting. And playing 5 of L6 games at home, with a short trip to Miami doesn't hurt either. Plus, worth noting, Orlando spread their playing minutes around, with a deep and talented rotation. Only two players logged more than 30 minutes last night (Barnes & Lewis), and 8 players played 20+ minutes, with Brandon Bass playing 15.36 minutes. Not to mention, Orlando are playing their best basketball of season. They have won 8 of L9, 22 of L28, won every quarter vs. San Antonio last night, & beat Miami by 16 in last meeting. Bottom line: Orlando have better players, more offensive skill, a deeper rotation & play better defense. In addition, believe Magic are focused tonight, given Miami may be their first round opponent in the playoffs. Take Orlando.

Tennessee -3

This match-up will showcase two teams that have major chips on their shoulders. San Diego State felt that they were left out of last years tournament and will want to prove that they belong to be a contender. The two major problems with the Aztecs is that they are horrible from the foul line and can't shoot well from beyond the arc. Coming off of a horrible loss to Kentucky, Tennesee is virtually getting zero respect as the early favorite as most teams from the SEC do. Most of the country wrote them off already. Big mistake. The Vols have the superior athleticism and talent on the floor and, quite honestly, lucked out playing a team that is not explosive on offense at all. Take Tennessee.
