Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls (+3.5, 193)

Joakim Noah’s mouth may be writing checks his butt can’t cash.
The Chicago Bulls hard-working forward, known for his loose tongue, bashed the city of Cleveland after the Bulls fell 112-102 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference playoff series.
"That's Jo, man," guard Derrick Rose told reporters. "He's just trying to win. That's the way he plays. That's the way he talks. If you see him you always know he's in the room. Actually it makes all of us play harder because you know every arena he goes to, everybody hates up. It makes us play harder, and we just love shutting the crowd up."
Noah’s mouth grabbed headlines earlier this year when he called Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett a dirty player. He may have been on to something after watching KG wash Miami’s Quentin Richardson’s face with an elbow last week that landed the veteran a one-game suspension.
Noah has been walking the walk for the most part this postseason. The 6-foot-11 center scored 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in Game 2 Monday. He scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards in Game 1.
"Noah is one of those guys who likes attention. I would never say anything like that,� LeBron James simply responded to the comments.
If Noah didn’t have a target on him already, the Cavs will be looking to shut his mouth in Game 3.

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3, 191)

Coasting into the postseason may have put a hitch in the Los Angeles Lakers’ giddy up.
The defending NBA champs are shooting just 39 percent (65-for-166) in the first two games of the series and now head to Oklahoma City for Game 3 Thursday night. Los Angeles fired 33-for-88 from the field in Game 2’s 95-92 win, failing to cover as a 6.5-point home favorite and playing under the betting total for the second straight game.
"I just thought our shooting was horrendous tonight," coach Phil Jackson told ESPN. "Another really bad game shooting. Guys had open looks. Ron (Artest), Fish (Derek Fisher), Lamar (Odom), guys that are experienced players in the NBA not really having the kind of looks to knock some shots down."
Even more terrible is the Lakers’ work behind the arc. They’ve gone just 14-for-44 from 3-point range (31 percent) including a 6-for-22 performance Tuesday. Kobe Bryant, Fisher and Artest combined to go 4-for-16 from outside.
The poor shooting has allowed the Thunder, one of the NBA’s best defensive clubs, to pack the paint and make life hard for forward Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. Los Angeles’ big bodies went 11-for-23 from the field with Bynum shooting only 3-for-9 and finishing with six points.
"If will help if we make a couple jumpers, open things up because then they are going to have to make an adjustment," Gasol told the media. "We have to recognize how much they try to pack the lane."

Thursday's Best NHL Bets

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins (-300, 5.5)

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins may have taken advantage of their opportunities, but the Ottawa Senators really beat themselves in Monday night’s 7-4 loss by committing turnovers and racking up the penalty minutes. This allowed Pittsburgh to score five second-period goals and escape Scotiabank Place with a 3-1 series lead.

After the game, a frustrated Ottawa club pointed the finger at the referees for making bad calls.

“You guys all saw the game�, Senators coach Cory Clouston told the Ottawa Sun after the game. “I just think there were some inconsistencies. We have to be better at handling adversity, but it seemed like what was being called in one situation wasn’t being called in another.�

That may be true, but the Sens couldn’t afford to lose their cool in this must-win Game 4 and they did. The main culprit was Chris Neil, who spent a whopping 16 minutes in the penalty box including two minutes for hitting Kris Letang right after scoring a goal.

We should be in store for another wild and crazy game when these teams head to Pittsburgh for Game 5 Thursday. A total of 29 goals have been scored so far in this series with the over cashing in three of those four games.

Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels (+105, 8.5)

You didn’t really expect Mike Scioscia’s ballclub to be down long did you? The second-best manager in the Show (after Tony La Russa) had to create a new identity for his team and it might have found it.
The Angels have perennially been a small-ball club. Stealing bags and manufacturing runs one base at a time. But after losing key components to that gameplan during the offseason, L.A. has been forced into a different approach.
"We're going out and putting up runs," said Howie Kendrick. "We're trying to do everything we can to keep it going."
The Angels are averaging nearly five runs per game during their current five-game winning streak.
Justin Verlander will aim to quiet L.A.’s bats on Thursday, but the Angels have touched him up for 20 earned runs in 37.1 career innings (4.82 ERA). Look for L.A. to take the series from the Tigers on Thursday.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets (-170, 7)

In a head-scratching move, the Cubs announced on Wednesday they were sending starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen.
This somewhat makes sense with Ted Lilly returning to the rotation on Saturday and Big Z being the worst starter for Chicago so far this season, but really?
Zambrano is one of only nine active pitchers with at least 100 victories and a win-loss percentage above .600. Either way, this move doesn’t help the Cubbies offense which is much worse than the pitching at the moment.
Chicago has totaled six runs and zero home runs during a four-game losing streak. Thursday’s starter for New York, Johan Santana, holds a 1.71 ERA in five career games versus the Cubs.
The last four games in this series have gone under and runs will come at a premium in the series finale.

I’m going with the hard-hitting Dodgers in the rubber-match of this series as they have been just tearing the cover off the ball lately.

Los Angeles has scored five runs or more in eight of their last 10 contests and just wiped out the Reds on Wednesday, winning 14-6 and getting big hits from Rafael Furcal, Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp – who has been the hottest bat in the National League this season.

The Dodgers have won four of their last six while Cincinnati has dropped six of their last seven overall.

On the hill today for Los Angeles is Vicente Padilla (1-1, 8.04 ERA) who was solid in his last outing at home against the Giants, allowing three runs on four hits over seven innings and striking out seven in a 10-8 Dodgers’ victory. As a starter with the Rangers, and previously the Phillies, Padilla and his teams won five of six starts against the Reds.

Mike Leake (0-0, 2.63 ERA) is on the hill for the Reds, allowing four runs in 13.2 innings of work this season. He allowed three runs on seven hits in a 4-3 loss to the Pirates on Friday and his big problem this season has been walks, as he’s allowed 12 base-on-balls, while striking out just eight. If he walks several Dodgers, their big bats will certainly make him pay.

Los Angeles has won eight of its last 11 in Cincinnati and 16 of 21 on Thursday. The Reds are 8-23 against N.L. West teams and 1-4 as a ‘dog. Love the Dodgers tonight, lay the chalk with Los Angeles.

Looking for the sweep in this early game, I love the Twins with Scott Baker toeing the slab for the surging Twins.

The right-handed, flyball pitcher is 5-0 with a 2.66 ERA in his last seven against the Indians. And today's outing could be the easiest of them all. The Indians rank last in the majors in batting average (.215) and near the bottom in runs (46).

Baker's quick, short arm action becomes effective with his a sneaky 90- to 94-mile per hour heater that has late life up in the zone. He has a knack for commanding his fastball to both sides of the dish, and knows when to mix in a curveball to both lefthanded and righthanded batters. He's also capable of throwing a short, late-breaking slider and an above-average changeup.

Baker, who tends to work ahead in the count , was effective for the second straight outing in a victory over the Royals at Target Field, where he allowed two runs and struck out six during a 10-3 victory on Friday. He only threw 92 pitches against Kansas City, and that was after giving up just one run in his previous start against the White Sox in a 2-1 win.

He should get plenty of run support from the Twins, who are batting .290 and averaging 6.0 runs while going 6-2 at their new outdoor stadium.

I am 14-7 the last 3 weeks with my comp plays.

Cleveland has been asked to cover double-digits twice in the first 2 games of this series. They were successful in Game One, winning by 13 as the 11 1/2-point favorite. They just missed in Game Two, winning by 10 points as the 10 1/2-point favorite.

Tonight the venue changes, but I don't see the result changing, as the Cavaliers appear to be a man up in each position on the court in this series. Chicago had Game Two deadlocked on Monday, only to see the Cavaliers outscore them by 10 in the final quater of play.

The Cavs have recorded a 22-18-1 road spread mark this season, and outright they have gone 26-15 on the highway this year.

Cleveland has taken Chicago's best shot, and they have still won by double-digits twice. I just don't see anything changing tonight, even on Chicago's home hardwood.

Cavs minus the points for the road win and cover as King James and Co. put a stranglehold on this series.

This is a young team that many would have expected to cave-in on the road in the playoffs, but they did anything but, coming within 3 points to the No. 1 seed Lakers on the road. The Thunder has to be feeling like they can play with the Lakers and with game three at home and feeling desperate, I expect them to notch the win tonight. The Lakers have dropped their last six following a straight-up win, while the Thunder is an impressive 48-21 ATS after a straight-up loss. I’m backing Oklahoma City in this one.

For the season, Verlander is 0-1 with a 6.88 ERA -- but he has been unlucky as well with a BABIP* (see definition below) that is a high .348. As Verlander's BABIP naturally lowers, so to will his ERA. Last year, Verlander was dominant with 260 strikeouts en route to a 19-9 record with a 3.45 ERA. Verlander's SIERA** (see definition below) suggests that he really should have had an ERA closer to a super 2.72 figure. The Angels are hitting only .251 so far this season. We look for Verlander to enjoy his best outing so far this season tonight.

Joe Saunders pitched an 8-inning, 5-hit gem where he allowed only two unearned runs in his last outing against at Toronto. For the season, Saunders is 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA. But Saunders has a very low .220 BABIP in his three starts this year so he is likely to not see his good luck continue. Last season, Saunders was a nice 16-7 but his peripherals were weak as he had a 4.60 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. And against Detroit throughout his career, this lefty has a 5.18 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP and an opponent's batting average of .293. Detroit is hitting a respectable .274 for the season -- but they have also won seven of their last ten games against left-handed starters. The Angels have lost six of their last eight games as an underdog with Saunders on the hill. Detroit has also won five of their last six games when Verlander is coming off a quality start in his last appearance. The utility of the BABIP stat is that it measures to a certain extent the pitcher's team defensive prowess as well measure the luck a pitcher encounters regarding where balls he allows into play actually go. The average BABIP rating for MLB pitchers is around .290 to .300. Because BABIP is an attempt to, in part, measure the luck the pitcher has enjoyed previously, over the long run pitchers with low BABIPs are expected to have this number rise while pitchers with high BABIPs are expected to see this number lower.

While the Lakers have won the first two games of this series, the Thunder has looked more athletic and energetic. Now returning home to their Ford Center where they enjoyed a 27-14 record with a +5.7 net point differential, we look for this upstart team to earn a win in this franchise's first home playoff game. The crowd should really help give the Thunder even more energy as these next two games are already sold out. We also expect Kevin Durant to get to the foul line more often in this game. He traveled to the charity stripe only six times in Oklahoma City's 95-92 loss on Tuesday. On his home court, Durant will likely be the beneficiary of more foul calls. The Lakers have struggled offensively in this series and the Thunder have done a pretty good job of keeping Kobe Bryant in check. Defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha has been tough on Kobe who was held to only 21 points in Game One. And while Bryant scored 39 points in Game Two, he did this on 39 possessions (for a mediocre +1.0 points-per-possession rate) while just hitting 12 of 28 shots. We look for guard Russell Westbrook to have a good game tonight as well as he holds a definitive advantage over Derek Fisher driving inside the paint.

Besides the obvious experience advantage the Lakers have in this series, these are two similar teams. The Lakers are only +0.2 points-per-possession better on offense then the Thunder while they are just +0.6 points-per-possession better on the defensive end. While the Lakers clearly control the series, we suspect that this a game they will not put up too much of a fight in. The Lakers have failed to cover their last six games coming off a win. They have failed to cover in seven of their last nine games as an underdog of under five points while the Thunder have covered twelve of their last fifteen games when favored by under five points. The Lakers have failed to cover four straight road games against teams with a winning percentage at home of over 60% while the Thunder have covered five of their last seven home games against teams with a winning record on the road. Together, these team trends produce our game specific 34-6 ATS combined winning angle. The Thunder's energy behind an electric home crowd should make the difference in this game. In their last meeting in the Ford Center, the Thunder trounced the Lakers by a 91-75 score.
