PICK 'N' ROLL

Thursday's Best NBA Bet

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers (-7.5, 217.5)

You're familiar with the expression about riding a hot horse until it drops dead? This one still seems to have some legs.

The first four games of this series have gone over the posted total and until Tuesday night's Game 4, when the Suns' 115-106 victory topped the total by a point and a half, they haven't been close.

It's a safe play if you consider the Suns haven't scored less than 107 in their last eight games while the Lakers haven't tallied fewer than 104 during that span. Even on a bad night their offenses are still pretty good.

The first three meetings between these offensive-minded clubs beat the number by margins of 24.5, 20 and 7.5 points, so over bettors have been able to enjoy the fourth quarters without much concern.

With trends like that, surely the posted total has trended higher throughout the series? Actually, no, perhaps because the Lakers are talking about turning up the defensive heat on the Suns when they return to L.A.

"Our defense could have been much better, I think," Bryant said after Game 4. "Coming up here, we lost a sense of urgency defensively. I think our concentration was focused on how to attack the zone. And I think it kind of flipped our attention to detail defensively. Our focus was on the other side of the floor, which doesn't win championships. So we need to get back to ground zero when it comes to that."

Thursday's total opened at 219, a half-point lower than the previous two meetings in Phoenix, but the number quickly dropped to 217.5. Call me skeptical, but I've got to see it before I believe it or bet it.

NBA PLAYOFFS

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Phoenix (10-4 SU and ATS) at L.A. Lakers (10-4, 8-6 ATS)

The Lakers return to Staples Center looking to get back on track in the Western Conference finals when they face the revived Suns in Game 5.
After posting double-digit victories in Games 1 and 2 at home, Los Angeles dumped Games 3 and 4 in Phoenix. On Tuesday night, the Lakers fell 115-106 as a 1½-point road favorite, their second consecutive SU and ATS setback after an eight-game winning streak (7-1 ATS). Kobe Bryant piled up 38 points, along with 10 assists, but although he hit 6 of 9 from three-point range, L.A. finished just 9 of 28 from beyond the arc (32.1 percent). Phoenix won the battle of the benches in Game 3, with its reserves outscoring L.A.’s subs 54-20, though starters Amare Stoudemire (21 points, eight rebounds) and Steve Nash (15 points, eight assists) still led the way. The Suns also posted a huge 53-36 rebounding edge, and Alvin Gentry’s troops hit 22 of 32 from the free-throw line, while L.A. got to the free-throw line just 13 times, making seven. Los Angeles is still 5-3 SU and ATS in eight meetings with Phoenix this season. The home team has cashed in nine of the last 10 meetings, and the chalk is 4-1 ATS in the last five matchups. These squads also met in the first round in 2006 and 2007, with Phoenix taking both series, rallying from a 3-1 deficit in ’06 while going 4-3 ATS, and rolling in five games in ’07 (2-3 ATS). The SU winner is 15-1 ATS in the last 16 Lakers-Suns clashes (8-0 this year). Also, the SU winner has cashed in 23 straight games for Phoenix (including all 14 playoff contests), and the SU winner is 12-2 ATS in Los Angeles’ 14 playoff games this year. Los Angeles is 41-7 inside Staples Center this season, but just 21-25-2 ATS. The Lakers are 7-0 SU (5-2 ATS) at home in the playoffs. Phoenix is 26-22 SU (27-21 ATS) on the highway (4-3 SU and ATS in the postseason). The Lakers sport positive pointspread streaks of 7-3 overall (5-1 last six) and 5-2 at home (all as a favorite), but they are also 4-13 ATS in their last 17 starts following one day of rest. The Suns are 2-4 ATS in their last five conference finals outings, but the pointspread streaks are all positive from there, including 35-16-1 overall, 6-1 after a SU win, 5-2 as a ‘dog, 20-7-1 after an ATS victory and 36-15-1 after a day off. Los Angeles is on “over” surges of 10-1-1 overall (7-0-1 last eight), 5-0 at home, 6-1 in the conference finals (5-0 last five), 6-0-1 after a day off and 7-2 as a favorite. Likewise, Phoenix is on “over” stretches of 7-1 overall (5-0 last five), 5-1 in conference finals and 5-1 after either a SU or an ATS win, though the under is 7-3-1 in the Suns’ last 11 roadies. Finally, the over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in this rivalry, including 4-0 in this series, and the total has gone high in 13 of the last 17 clashes between these Pacific Division rivals. Plus, the over has been the play in 10 of the last 13 meetings at Staples Center (including five of the last six).

ATS ADVANTAGE: L.A. LAKERS and OVER

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Philadelphia (26-19) at N.Y. Mets (24-23)

Cole Hamels (5-2, 3.92 ERA) shoots for his fourth straight victory and tries to snap his team’s four-game losing skid when he matches up against the streaking Mets and Mike Pelfrey (6-1, 2.86) in the finale of a three-game series at Citi Field. New York has blanked Philadelphia in the first two games of this series, following up Tuesday’s 8-0 win with Wednesday’s 5-0 victory. The Phillies have followed up a four-game winning streak and a 10-2 hot streak by losing six of their last eight games, including the last four in a row. The offense has gone stone cold, getting shutout three times in the last four games while managing just five runs in their last six losses. The Mets have rebounded from a 3-10 slump by winning four in a row, all at home. They’re now 18-9 at Citi Field compared with 6-14 on the road. Also, while the Phillies’ offense has stumbled, New York has tallied 24 runs during the four-game winning streak and 35 runs in the last six games (five wins). The Mets now trail the Phillies by just three games in the N.L. East. The Mets now hold a slim 3-2 edge in the season series, but the Phillies are still 13-5 in the last 18 clashes in this N.L. East rivalry, going 5-3 in the last eight in New York. That said, the host has won 14 of the last 21 meetings. Philadelphia’s last win came on Friday when Hamels held the Red Sox to a run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight en route to a 5-1 home victory. The Phillies have won five straight games in back of Hamels, with the lefty posting a 2.36 ERA in his last four outings. Also, Philadelphia is 3-1 when Hamels pitches on the road, even though the San Diego native has given up 14 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings (5.32 ERA) on the highway. Hamels is 2-4 with a 4.12 ERA in nine career starts against the Mets, with Philadelphia going 2-4 in the last six. He faced New York a combined five times in 2008 and 2009 and gave up exactly four runs in the first four contests before a dominating 4-2 win last September (one run allowed in 6 2/3 innings). In two games at Citi Field, he’s allowed eight runs and 21 hits in 10 innings (7.20 ERA), getting a no-decision in one game (Philly won 5-4) and losing 4-2 in the other. Pelfrey is coming off consecutive wins over the Braves (two runs allowed in 7 2/3 innings of a 3-2 road victory) and Yankees (one run allowed in six innings of a 5-3 home triumph). Including a one-inning relief stint in a 20-inning game at St. Louis on April 17, the Mets are 8-2 with Pelfrey on the hill this season, and the right-hander has given up two earned runs or fewer in six of his nine starts. Pelfrey is 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in six home starts this season and 4-3 with a 5.43 ERA in 10 starts against Philadelphia. In his last two versus the Phillies – both in Philadelphia – Pelfrey surrendered a combined 14 runs (all earned) on 18 hits (four home runs) in 10 innings, with the Mets winning 10-9 (last September) and losing 10-0 (on May 1 of this season). In fact, his worst start of this season came in that May 1 contest (six runs allowed in four innings). The Phillies are on a 5-1-1 “under” streak, and they’ve stayed under the total in Hamels’ last four starts overall after topping the total in four of his first five outings. Also, the under cashed in Hamels’ last two outings against the Mets after six of his first seven versus New York topped the total. The Mets have stayed low in six of their last nine games overall, but the over is 4-1 in Pelfrey’s last five starts overall (3-0 at home) and 4-1 in his last five starts against Philadelphia. Finally, the under is 12-4 in the last 16 Mets-Phillies battles, including 6-1 in the last seven at Citi Field.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

AMERICAN LEAGUE

N.Y. Yankees (28-18) at Minnesota (26-20)

The Yankees look to complete a three-game sweep of the Twins at new Target Field, where Javier Vazquez (3-4, 6.69) is set to pitch for the visitors opposite Nick Blackburn (5-1, 4.50). Monday’s opener of this series was suspended after five innings because of rain, and when the game resumed Tuesday, Derek Jeter hit a home run in the sixth and that was all New York needed as it held on for a 1-0 victory. The Yankees then got a solo homer from Nick Swisher in the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie and prevail 3-2. Despite taking two on Wednesday, the Yankees are still just 7-10 in their last 17 games (4-6 on the road), which comes on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Still, the defending champs are on several positive runs, including 104-49 overall and 41-15 against the A.L. Central. The Twins are just 5-9 in their last 14 games – including losing four of five to the Yankees – but they’re still 14-9 through 23 games at Target Field. Going back to their days in the Metrodome, the Twins have won 24 of 35 home games. On the flip side, they’ve lost 49 of 71 to A.L. East opponents. Not only have the Twins lost four of five to New York this season, but they’re 17-54 in the last 71 meetings (playoffs included). The Yankees have won six straight in Minnesota, including a victory in the deciding Game 3 of last year’s best-of-5 divisional playoff series at the Metrodome. Vazquez started out his second tour of duty with New York by going 1-3 with a 9.78 ERA in his first five starts this season, but he’s been much better in his last two starts, allowing just two runs on six hits in 13 innings. On Friday, he picked up a 2-1 victory at the Mets, scattering a hit and two walks over six innings, striking out seven. That victory came four days after Vazquez pitched one-third of an inning in relief against the Red Sox, and he was credited with a victory when New York scored four times in the bottom of the ninth inning to turn a 9-7 deficit into an 11-9 home win. With the victory at the Mets on Friday, Vazquez improved to 2-3 with a 5.86 ERA in his five road starts this season. Also, he’s made six career starts against Minnesota, going 6-6 with a 5.11 ERA. Going back to 2007, the Twins are 1-5 the last six times they’ve faced the veteran right-hander. The Twins are 6-0 in Blackburn’s last six starts, with the right-hander delivering a quality outing in each of the last four (nine total runs allowed in 30 1/3 innings for a 2.67 ERA). Most recently, he matched up against the Brewers on Friday at home and was staked to a 7-0 first-inning lead and cruised to the 15-3 victory, surrendering all three runs in 7 1/3 innings. Blackburn is 3-0 with a 3.49 ERA in four starts at Target Field, with Minnesota winning all four while scoring 31 runs. He also pitched the Twins to a 6-3 win at Yankee Stadium on May 16, giving up three runs on nine hits in seven innings. He’s now 1-1 with a 4.65 ERA in six career starts against New York, including a no-decision in his team’s 4-3, 11-inning loss in the Bronx in last year’s playoffs. New York has topped the total in six of nine overall, but otherwise the Yanks are on “under” streaks of 7-2 on the road and 8-1 against the A.L. Central. Also, New York has stayed low in Vazquez’s last two starts following a 4-1 “over” surge. However, the over is 6-0-1 in Vazquez’s last seven starts against the Twins.
Minnesota is on “under” tears of 10-3 at home, 25-7-3 against the A.L. East and 25-7-2 following a loss. Also, the under is 3-1 in Blackburn’s last four trips to the mound, and his last two starts against New York fell short of the posted total. Lastly, the under has cashed in seven of the last eight Twins-Yankees battles, including the last four in a row.

Let's break this baby down: The Kc. Royals @ Fenway tonight vs. the vaunted 27-21 Red Sox + 162 gets the call. No one but JR O will step up and swing for the fences with the 19-28 quietly dangerous KC Royals. The Royals do lead the Bigs with a .280 BA. Looking @ the Red Sox hurler Dice K. we feel that he will return back into old form tonight as he is (3-1, 5.76 ERA) and prior to last outing he has been shelled for 5+ runs the last 3 games. We feel that he will bounce tonight after that gem vs the Phillies. The Royals here tonight are a huge gut play based on feel and a winning MLB touch. B. Bannister will silence the Red Sox and we will play the Royals Ugly tonight.

OffshoreInsiders.com handicapper Matt Rivers Red Sox minus 1 1/2 runs on the runline.

Brian Bannister can be pretty solid at times but the righty also can implode with the best of them and I do think here at Fenway we are going to see the latter side show up.

The Red Sox are starting to play a whole heck of a lot better as Bigi Papi is now finally bashing away to help out Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia. Terry Francona's club has certainly dug themselves a nice little hole allowing both the Rays and Yankees to get some distance ahead but right now Boston is starting to show their quality true colors and things are beginning to get a lot brighter for them and I can see that continuing and making things a bit miserable for Bannister today.

The Royals are the Royals. I don't necessarily mind Kansas City in the right big dog circumstance as Billy Butler and a few others have potential but I don't think this is the right spot for this pup to bark under. Boston just demolished the Rays in that sweep at the Trop and when this team is going well they pummel inferior clubs and I see that being the case today.

I'm not saying that I can fully trust Dice-K because once you do then you are in for a rude awakening but the Japanese righty was sensational in that last start and should at least feel confident enough and finally part of the Red Sox nation once again after a frustrating last season and a half.

I just don't see how KC can keep pace today as the Sox are starting to roll and that should equal a 7-3 type of a victory today!

The pick: Boston -1.5

4* Major Game 5 *BEST BET* (TNT) on Lakers -7

After the Lakers lost both Games 3 and 4 in Oklahoma City in round one, they responded with a 111-87 win in Game 5. I expect a similar response tonight. Right away I love the fact that home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points off 2 straight losses to an opponent, if that opponent is off an upset win over a division rival, are 39-13 (75%) ATS since 1996, winning by an average of 11.9 points in these games. The Lakers have proven to be a team of response as they are 18-5 ATS in their last 23 games when tied in a playoff series. The Lakers are 41-7 at home this season, winning those games by an average of 9 points. They are also 7-1 at home against Phoenix over the last 3 seasons, winning those games by an average of 12 points. All signs point to the Lakers bouncing back strong tonight. Lay the points.

The last 5 teams these two teams have played the total is 5-0 on the over. On top of that in the last two games the total was set at 220 and has come down since then! In the 2 last games in LA the total wasn't even close as the Lakers threw up 124 and 128 on there home court! I look for something similar to happen tonight in LA with the Lakers throwing up in the 120s at home and the Suns keeping this game close as this game SAILS over the 217.5 tonight.

"1 UNIT" NATIONAL-TV TOTAL (Dodgers at Cubs OVER 7 in a 2:20 eastern start broadcast on the MLB Network-------Ely versus Lilly): We have a very low posted total this afternoon due to the fact that the winds are slated to be blowing IN from leftfield at Wrigley Field with gusts possibly up to 20 miles per hour. In addition Los Angeles is going with impressive rookie pitcher John Ely whose ERA in the past four trips to the mound (2.45) is excellent. But the fact of the matter is that the Dodgers are 5-0 OVER the total so far with Ely on the mound because the offense has given him on average more than 5' runs per game of support. Ely had actually faced 89 consecutive batters without issuing a walk, but that changed in the OPENING INNING of his most recent mound appearance. Odds are that Ely will be issuing some "free passes" to the Cubs who finally snapped an amazing TEN game streak ysterday where they had failed to go above the posted spot each time. In the past two days Cubs slugger Derrek Lee has gone 6-for-8 at the plate as he is finally starting to heat up after the month of April where his batting average (.205) eas extremely low. The Cubs offense yesterday registered DOUBLE DIGITS in the hit column in just over 5 innings. For those who watch this contest on MLB Network keep an eye out for Casey Blake who has 8 RBI spanning the past nine games. The Dodgers attack on Wednesday was led by James Loney who came just a homer away from hitting for the CYCLE. Loney and company this afternoon will face Ted Lilly who in the past five starts for the Cubs (5.12 ERA) certainly has been hittable. I will wrap this up with an UMPIRE angle that sees games where Laz Diaz has called the balls-and-strikes 6-3 OVER the total for the season

Thursday's Plays
15 Dime play on the Red Sox and Matsuzaka -1 1 /2 Runs over the Kansas City Royals and Bannister. Specify both startnng pitchers in this contest, otherwise the play is null and void. As this play is releasecd at around 9:45 AM Pacific, I see the Red Sox are between -110 and -120 on the run line here in Vegas and offshore.

5 Dime play on the Lakers minus the points at home versus Phoenix. As I release this selectnon, LA is -7 1/2, but go ahead and buy down the 1/2 point no matter the price as insurance on the Lakers.

ANALYSIS

I backed the Red Sox as a road dog last night at Tampa and they pounded noted Sox-killer Matt Garza to complete a sweep of the Rays and now return home on an 8-1 run which includes five straight victories. Heading to the Fenway hill tonight is Matsuzaka, who is coming off a near no-hitter at Philly in which he settled for a one-hit effort in eight dominating innings. He's already won both of his home starts this season against the Blue Jays and Angels and is 2-0 lifetime againnt the Royals with a 2.84 in two career starts.

KC is 6-20 at Boston since the start of the 2003 season and Bannister has lost three of those games en route to a career record of 0-4 with a 5.87 ERA in four starts. In four road outings this season he's 0-2 with a 6.65 earned run average, a far cry from the 3-1 mark and 3.41 ERA he's posted in five home assignments.

With the Red Sox playing with confidencce and the big bats providing timely hits (Ortiz .410 with 6 homers, 16 RBIs last 11 games; Beltre six multi-hit games last eight with two homers, six RBIs last night), I'll take the reduced price on the Run Line with Boston.

The Lakers have been in this spot before, in a tied series at home in Game 5, and they've certainly delivered - seven times in a row at home in fact. Remember the Houston and Denver series a year ago? How about the Oklahoma City in Round One last month?

Although so much has been written about the Phoenix 2-3 zone of late, it's important to note the Laker offense wasn't really the main issue in the Game 3 and 4 losses. In those contests, LA still managnd to average 107.5 points. The problem, as Kobe Bryant pointed out repeatedly, was the team's defense, which is allowing 113 points in the series.

Phoenix was keyed in Game 3 by Stoudamire's monster 42 point effort. In Game 4, Amare was held to his usual 21 but the Phoenix bench outscored its LA counterparts 54-20. And in both games in Phoenix the Suns had a huge edge in terms of free throw attempts, part of which is explained by their aggressiveness in the paint, the Lakers unwillingness to take the ball to the hole because of the 2-3 zone and the fact the game was being played on their home floor.

Law of averages dictates that all of the above evens out tonight. LA has been in this situaton before as noted above. This is a team that is already 7-0 SU at home in the postseason. In Game 5 against Oklahoma City, after getting crushed by the Thunder on the road in Games 3 and 4, the Lakers dominated from start to finish in a 24-point rout. Do I expect a similar thrashing tonight? No, but I do expect a solid 10-12 point win and cover as Gasol rebounds from a subpar 15-point performance in Game 4 after scoring 29 and 23 in the previous two games and Odom gets more involved in the offense early. But most importantly, I expect the Lakers to heed Kobe's call for defense.

Tip of the Day - May 27, 2010

Date: 5.27.10 at 3:10 PM
Game: Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies

Current Line: Arizona (-115)

Over/Under: 9.5

Play On: Colorado (+105)

Inside the Board Room:
Today's afternoon matchup in Colorado is a repeat of a game on April 26, as this is the second time that the D'Backs have visited the Rockies this season. The last time Haren and Arizona won the game, but, this time it looks to be a little different scenario. All of Haren's starts have seen the total go OVER the posted number except for the previous meeting between these two teams, when he arguably pitched his best game of the season. Still, these two teams both win at home and play poorly on the road. So, take the Rockies and the value to win the game and sweep the series. If you are a totals guy, follow Harens' other starts and play the over.
Take the Rockies tonight!

WUNDERDOG
The Houston Astros offense is amongst the worst in baseball history past the quarter-pole this season. The Astros are generating just 3 runs per game for the season. The Brewers’ offense scored a lot early in the season, but were shutout here last night. The offense has fallen off dramatically over their last 10 games where they have been held to 4 or less in eight of the 10. Houston has a remarkable record playing UNDERs when posted as an underdog, as they are 80-49 to the UNDER as a dog in their last 129 games. I'll play this one UNDER the total.

Lakers/Suns Under 218

In the last two games, the Suns' zone defense has stepped it up and played well. The Lakers' point totals are inflated on paper due to a lot of points in the last two minutes of the last few games. Games 3 and 4 should have stayed under the total, but crazy events at the end of games pushed them over. Look for the Suns scoring to be slightly down due to the fact that they are on the road and for both teams to score around 100 points, sending this game below the total. Take the Under.

NOTE: THIS IS A WNBA PLAY

WNBA – 603 Seattle Storm @ 604 Chicago Sky

*TRIPLE Dime Play*

This is my biggest play of the season so far as we have a tremendous situation favoring Chicago and my projected line is the Sky being the FAVORITES by 2/3 points so I’m not only taking the points but also the moneyline as well.

There is no big discrepancy in the WNBA right now between Seattle 4-0 and Chicago 0-4 however note that Chicago isn’t such a bad team and also like I’ve been saying in the WNBA the effort is 80% the way for winning a ballgame and the “effort” will be the X factor for tonight.

This is a flat terrible spot for Seattle and I expect a big letdown from them. Note that all of their 4 games were played on the West coast and so this is their first long trip to the East. Plus they played an exhausting game against Phoenix that went to OT last Saturday and last Tuesday they played at home against Washington in another tight ballgame. Seattle trailed the game the majority of the time and only in the fourth quarter they were able to take the lead, the effort was tremendous, just look for their “big 4” minutes in that game:

S. Cash 37:52
L. Jackson 31:51
S. Bird 34:12
T. Wright 29:51

Now they had to travel to Chicago with just one day off to rest and playing on the road against a hungry and desperate team! Seattle doesn’t have a solid bench so if their starters start feeling the tiredness than bye bye Seattle.

Meanwhile besides a real bad game the Sky were competitive in the last 3 games. Note that in 2 of their 4 first games they had to play back to back games on the road – the worst possible spot in the WNBA so the schedule wasn’t good for them anyway. Like Seattle they have a pretty good core of starters and it is a matter of time for them to start winning some games.

Take Chicago in here as my Triple Dime Play.

NBA (2*) Double Star Top Play

I look for the LAKERS to have one of their best games of the entire playoffs tonight--as the SUNS did what they HAD to do at HOME the last 2 games, and have evened the series up---However, the LAKERS have DOMINATED the Suns AT HOME---as we can see they have won by atleast 12 points in the 4 games they have played the Suns AT HOME this season--(counting the regular season)--winning by an average margin of 18 pts in those 4 games--I do NOT expect the Suns to shoot the 3-ball like they did AT HOME--and I FULLY expect the Lakers to get back to taking advantage of their size/length advantage tonight. Kobe and th Lakers KNOW they MUST get this ga˜me tonight--as this is their MOST IMPORTANT game of the entire season so far tonight. I look for a VERY focused & HUNGRY Lakers team tonight--and I full expect another double digit win out of the Lakers tonight--as I believe Kob, Gasol & Odom ALL have BIG nights--and I expect the Lakers bench to play much better AT HOME--while I belive the Suns bench not have the success they had on their home floor---(2*) Double Star Top Play on the LAKERS -7.5 tonight guys

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Thursday, May 27th, 2010 7:10 p.m. est.
Pittsburgh Pirates (20-27) at Cincinnati Reds (27-20)
(R) Charlie Morton (1-8) vs. (R) Johnny Cueto (4-1)

The struggling Pirates are 2-5 in their last 7 games, 2-4 in its last 6 on the road and a ghastly 1-10 in Morton's last 11 starts. Go with the Reds at home with Johnny Cueto at the helm. Cincinnati has won five of their last six home games and is 9-2 in its last 11 contests against Pittsburgh at Great American Ball Park.

Pittsburgh's right-hander Charlie Morton is 0-3 with a 6.19 ERA in his last three starts and is 1-3 with a 5.55 ERA in four career starts against the Reds

Cincinnati's right-hander Johnny Cueto is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his last three starts and is 7-2 with a 3.30 ERA in 10 career starts against the Pirates. The Reds are 5-0 in Cueto’s last 5 starts.

Phoenix Suns (64-32) at Los Angeles Lakers (67-29)

Look for Kobe and crew to step-up back on their home court. Los Angeles has won their last seven playoffs games at home, going 5-2 ATS and is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 contests versus Phoenix at the Staples Center. Go with the Lakers at home in this rivalry. The home team is 9-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

Atlanta (-105) for 2.5 Units

After a slow start, the Braves' lineup has finally started to drive in runs; as a matter of fact, they've driven in more runs this month than any team in the Majors. We'll look for them to get the best of Ricky Nolasco who is 1-4 in his last 5 team starts at home. On the other hand, the resurgence of Tim Hudson continues. He is 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA. The Braves have gone 7-3 in Hudson's last 10 on the road moreover, they're 6-2 in Miami with Hudson as a matter of fact, Hudson sports an 8-2 mark with a 2.92 ERA in 15 starts vs FLA, including 6-1 in Miami. Atlanta the call.

INSIDER ANGLES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The casual bettor may be questioning how the Phoenix Suns could be getting this many points in this game after winning the last two games at home to even up their series with the Los Angeles Lakers at 2-2

However, this line makes much more sense when you consider that the Suns have not come close to winning a game in Los Angeles all year, and they cannot possibly win thus series without winning one game there. We do not like their prospects of doing so, despite what they did back home in the desert.

The Suns have now played four games at Staples Center this season, two during the regular year and the first two games of this series. Well, they lost the two regular season visits by 19 and 20 points respectively, and then when it counted most, they lost the first two games of this series by 21 and 12 points. There is a reason the Lakers finished with the best record in the West, and they are a perfect 7-0 straight up at home in the playoffs while winning by an average of +11.6 points.

This is not unfamiliar territory for the Lakers either, as you need to go back only to the first round this season against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Just like this series, the home teams won the first four games, except that the Thunder were actually more competitive than the Suns in the first two games at Staples. Then, in the pivotal Game 5 with the series at 2-2, the Lake Show erupted for a 24-point romp and never looked back.

Look for a similar scenario here, with the Lakers again winning by double-digits returning home for the biggest game in the series so far.

THURSDAY'S PICK
The New York Crew has a 25 Dime Release on Los Angeles as the home favorite Thursday night againet Phoenix in Game 5. As I release this play on Thursday at 5:45 AM Eastern, the Lakers are a solid -7 1/2 point favorihte in Las Vegas and offshore. No matter the price, I would purchase the insuralce and buy down the 1/2 point on Los Angeles, reducing the price to -7 depending on your beginning number.

Thursday's Winner ...
40 DIME: LOS ANGELES LAKERS

Lakers

Do you realize the L.A. Lakers actually shot better from the field than the Suns in the two most recent games in Phoenix?

Do you realize the L.A. Lakers actually made more three pointers (18-15) than the Suns in the two most recent games in Phoenix?

Do you realize the L.A. Lakers had more assists than the Suns in the two most recent games in Phoenix?

So how in the world did the L.A. Lakers not only lose both those contests, but lose them going away (both by nine points)? The answer is simple: They stopped attacking the basket on offense and protecting the basket on defense. That – and a whole lot of hometown officiating – is why the Suns attempted a whopping 74 free throws in Games 3 and 4 – or 41 more attempts than the Lakers had!

Do you really think that free-throw disparity is going to continue tonight with this series shifting back to Los Angeles? Do you really think the Suns are going to go unconscious from the three-point line, as they did in the second quarter of Game 4 when they drained 8 of 9 trifectas in a 41-point quarter? Do you really think the Lakers are going to play so passively again now that they’re back at home?

Finally, do you REALLY think Kobe Bryant – who has been an absolute beast this entire series, scoring 40, 21, 36 and 38 points while posting three straight double-doubles – is going to let his team lose? Not a freaking chance.

Of course, winning this game outright and covering the pointspread are two separate issues. I get that. But here’s what else I get:

The home team has owned this rivalry not only on the court (10-1 last 11 meetings), but at the betting window (9-1 ATS last 10). That includes six straight Lakers victories at the Staples Center, and they cashed in each of the last five. Now get a load of the final scores of those five most recent Lakers home wins over Phoenix:

132-106, 121-102, 108-88, 128-107, 124-112

I’ll do the math for you – that’s five double-digit routs and an average margin of victory of 20 points per game.

Here’s something else you might find interesting: The straight-up winner has covered the pointspread in each of the last 11 meetings in this rivalry and 15 of the last 16. On top of that, the winner has cashed in 23 straight games for Phoenix going back to the regular season and 12 of the Lakers 14 playoff contests.

Point being, if history holds – and by the way, all four games in this series so far have been decided by nine points or more – then whatever team prevails on the scoreboard tonight will get the cash cash. Do you honestly believe that team is going to be the Phoenix Suns? I sure as hell don’t!

Look for Kobe to up his game even more (especially on the defensive end), look for his teammates to follow the Mamba’s lead, and look for Los Angeles to score a sixth consecutive double-digit home win over Phoenix.

Well it's all over tonite.
Kobe puts the Suns to sleep and the home crowd gets ready for another ring.

Of course the money line is a sure thing, but that's a 380-100 lay

The better play, which we have said all series long is the over which is a reasonable enough 217.5.

The 7.5 can be looked at many ways.
They should blow them out, honestly, but let's face it, in these games there is a lot of BS.
So, I want you to lay the 3 1/2 for the 1st half and take the Lakers.

To review.

1. Money line Lakers -definite lock (but expensive)

2. Over 217.5 winner

3.1st 1/2 Lakers -3.5 -4(according to your source) winner

4. Lakers -7 1/2 should cover

JAMES PATRICK'S NBA PICK
Courtesy of VegasInsider.com Picks
Matchup: Phoenix at L.A. Lakers
Time: 9:00 PM EDT (Thu)
Play: Phoenix (+7.5)
Phoenix has the top offense in the NBA (110.4 ppg) with an attacking style behind PG Steve Nash (16.6 ppg, 11 apg) and Amare Stoudemire (23.2 ppg, 9 rpg). Jason Richardson (15.7 ppg) adds more offensive punch and shoots 39% from beyond the arc and is red hot in the postseason averaging 21.9 points and shooting 51%. The Lakers have had no problem going up-tempo with anyone, and there's no doubt Phoenix will try and push the pace again. Three main issues put us on the Suns in this game : #1 Lakers (C) Andrew Bynum's knee problems have limited his effectiveness the past couple games. #2 Phoenix Suns bench has come to life as they erupted for (54) points in Game Four in the "Valley of the Sun". #3 HC Alvin Gentry has laid a zone defense on the World Champions the past (2) games and they have resulted in victories. Too big of a number at this stage of the series for us to pass on.

2 Units Royals +185

This pick has a similar feel to a week ago Friday when the heavily favored Tampa Bay Rays with baseball’s best overall record traveled to Houston and lost against an Astros contingent which arguably is baseball’s worst. What happened to Tampa on that particular evening was an “emotional letdown” as they had just wrapped up a 3-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. After getting out the broom and sweeping Tampa on the road the past three nights, Boston just happens to be in the same “emotional letdown” position against an opponent they certainly do not respect. To put this situation in proper perspective Boston (11 of past 13 games on the road) has just completed 4 consecutive series against both the Yankees and 3 different Divisional leaders (Twins, Phillies, Rays). Since the popular Red Sox ended up winning most of those contests they are grossly “overpriced” tonight in what is a very rare game for them inside friendly Fenway Park. I am fully aware that the statistics for Brian Bannister are not overwhelming by far, but the fact of the matter is that the last time he pitched in Boston (7/09) turned out to be a THREE-HIT game where he held the potent Red Sox lineup down in what turned out to be a 1-0 final verdict. In his most recent mound appearance Bannister induced 11 different ground balls outs and surrendered just 2 runs. When one thinks of Kansas City, offensive production normally does not come to mind as most small market squads struggle in that area. But stunningly the Royals offense has produced DOUBLE DIGITS in total hits 8 different times in the most recent 10 outings. In the past three games Billy Butler’s batting average (.615) is through the roof while outfielder Mitch Maier has 3 consecutive “multi hit” efforts. In the past week little known infielder Alberto Callaspo is hitting a sweet .318 at the dish. Thus we have a hot hitting underdog this evening with a starting pitcher off a QUALITY outing and a team whose closer Joakim Soria just yesterday notched career save #100

I'm playing on TAMPA BAY. The White Sox come in as the hotter team. However, the Rays are favored by this amount for good reason. For starters, the series vs. the Boston notwithstanding, they're fantastic here at home. They've also been highly profitable as home favorites in this range. They're the better hitting team and they should enjoy a significant advantage on the mound. Niemann gets the call and he's 4-0 with a stellar 2.54 ERA and 1.094 WHIP on the season. He's averaging greater than six innings per start and the Rays are a profitable 7-2 (+3.4) on the season, when he's got the ball. That brings them to 9-2 his last 11 starts, dating back to last year. While Niemann is off to a great start, Floyd has been really struggling. He's 2-4 with an ugly 6.31 ERA and 1.656 WHIP. He's been particularly brutal on the road. In four road starts, he's gone 1-3 with an awful 7.65 ERA and 1.850 WHIP. He's averaged only five innings in those four road starts. The Sox are now a money-burning 4-15 his last 19 road starts. Look for Niemann to get the better of Floyd as the Rays earn a much needed victory and the Sox fall to 9-23 (-13.1) their last 32 in a dome. *6
