Today's Winner...
100 Dime release on the Texas Rangers and Rich Harden as the road underdog against the Chicago White Sox and Mark Buehrle. You must specicfy both starting pitchers in this game or else the selectnon is null and void. As I release this play around 10 PM Eastern on Monday night, the Rangers are around a +110 underdog.

Looking over this match up, and then analyzing the line, I've concluded its simply too easy to play the White Sox here. You can throw whatever stats you want at me (more on that later), but Vegas is trying to tell us something with this number. That something is this is going to be a much tougher match up for the Pale Hose that meets the eye tonight at the Cell.

The first question that comes to my mind is why is Mark Buehrle only a modest favorite in this spot? He's got a stellar record at home againnt Texas (7-2, 2.55 ERA), is coming off a game where he threw only 36 pitches due to an ejection, and is facing a Rangers team that's struggling (1-6 L7 games). He doesn't even have to face Nelson Cruz, who went on the DL with a hamstring injury. Fishy to say the least.

But the answer lies with Buehrle's counterpart, Rich Harden (2-1, 5.14 ERA), who has been inconsistent at best, but has fared very well in this specicfic spot. When Harden gets 6 or more days of rest, he's been great, going 10-5 with a 2.66 ERA in 28 starts! He's also enjoyed plenty of success against the White Sox, going 4-3, 3.19 ERA in 8 career starts. Harden will be looking to bounce back of an ugly start in Kansas City, and you couldn't ask for a better situation.

For all the flak the Rangers have caught during their current slide, their offense is still far and away better than the White Sox. They're batting .282 over their L10 games, and average 4.3 runs per game against lefties on the season. Anyone who follows the White Sox knows their offense is average at best, ranknng in the bottom 3rd in batting average (27th), runs scored (23rd), and OPS (25th). They're also just 11-13 at the Cell this season.

The White Sox may seem like a "lock" at this price with Buehrle on the hill, but they're anything but. Texas rebounds behind a rested Harden tonight at the Cell. Rangers (Harden) over the Chi. White Sox (Burhrle) Tuesday.

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Johnny Cueto (5-1, 3.25 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

The Reds righty has been simply magic during the club's recent hot streak. Cueto has won four straight starts and hasn’t tasted defeat since April 24. He’s allowed just three runs in his last four outings, most recently going six innings, allowing just three hits, in an 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even more impressive is the fact that Cueto is missing his slider due to a blister on his right hand. He is expected to be back at full strength against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday.

Nick Blackburn (6-1, 4.28 ERA), Minnesota Twins

The Twins right-hander has won five starts in a row heading into Tuesday. Blackburn hasn’t lost since April 11 and is coming off a strong showing against the dangerous New York Yankees lineup, allowing just two runs through seven innings in an 8-2 victory last Thursday. Not only is Blackburn getting the job done but Minnesota’s lineup is backing him up, scoring 57 runs over his nine starts this season – the most for any pitcher in the majors.

Slumping

Brian Matusz (2-5, 5.76 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

Matusz’s last win came way back on April 18 against the Oakland A’s. Since then, the lefty has gone 0-5 in his last seven starts and is coming off a rough couple outings heading into Tuesday’s date with the Yankees. Matusz lasted just over two innings, giving up seven runs on May 20, then served up six runs in five innings against Oakland last Wednesday. He did, however, settle down in that outing and could be turning things around.

Wade LeBlanc (2-3, 3.71 ERA), San Diego Padres

LeBlanc’s command has been off and on since joining the Big League club in 2010. In his last start, the left-hander gave up four runs including two home runs on nine hits in just over five innings of work. The start before that, he was rocked for eight runs in just three innings, serving up two dingers. He hasn’t won since an eight-hit shutout on April 29 and had a 5.81 ERA in May, despite starting the month strong.

"I think more than anything it was the lack of not getting the ball in good spots," Padres manager Bud Black told MLB.com following LeBlanc’s latest outing. "Today I saw the ball elevated more than I have all year. There was not enough quality strikes down in the strike zone."

Play On: Oakland w/Gonzalez vs. Lackey
Note: When Gio Gonzalez matches serves with John Lackey in Boston tonight he will do so knowing he is 3-0 in his last three team starts with a super sharp 2.34 ERA. On the flip side, Lackey has been lousy with 16 walks and 14 strikeouts in his last four starts, while compiling a 6.36 ERA in that span. Back the better arm as a value dog here tonight.

We recommend a 1-unit play on Oakland.

Tuesday's Selections ...
Highest-Rated MLB 30 Dime Americnn League Game of the Year goes tonight on the LA Angels with Joel Pineiro over the Kansas City Royals and Brian Bannister. I also have a 10 Dime Bonus Best Bet for you on the Philadelphia Phillies with Cole Hamels ocver the Atlanta Braves with Tim Hudson. Remember, both listnd pitchers must start, or no action on the release(s).

After back-to-back walk-off wins over the Mariners, the Angels came to Kansas City on Memorial Day, and made it look easy in their 7-1 win over the slumpnng KC Royals.

KC has now lost 3 in a row, and 6 of their last 9, while the Angels have ripped off 3 in a row, and 5 of their last 6.

I will give you the fact Brian Bannister is currentcly pitching better than Joel Pineiro, but the Angels are now 10-1 against the Royals since last season, and they are also 9-2 their last 11 games played at Kauffman Stadium.

Plus, the Halos have been able to get things going against Bannister, as Bannister's last 2 starts against the Angels have seen 9 runs score in just 14 innings of work for an 0-1 mark

Maybe the Royals hit Pineiro, but based on the series numbers, I feel quite confident that the Angels will battle back and win another against the Royals.

My 10 dime bonus best bet is for the Phillies to snap the Braves 6 game winning streak with the underdog win

Atlanta has taken over a 1/2 game lead in the NL East thanks to the Phillies current power outtage, and Atlanta starter Tim Hudson is 5-1 on the year, but that 1 loss comes against the Phillies back in April.

Philadelphia is also 4-3 still in the season series, and starter Cole Hamels is starting to pitch much better, and while I don't see the Phillies bats lighting up Hudson, I do see Hamels and Hudson going toe-to-toe with Philly just edging the Braves for the nice underdog win.
Remember: both listed pitchers must start, or NO action on the release(s).

LET'S BREAK THIS BABY DOWN

Texas is really struggling right now as the Chi Sox will tune them up tonight Tu~esday. The Chi Sox Strong Lefty Mark Buehrle has an 11-4 record and 3.02 ERA vs. the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are a terrible bet on the road as the Rangers CAN'T SCORE. The Texas Ace Rich Harden (2-1, 5.14) has a 9+ ERA the last 2 games. Texas is a full fade team right now. With N Cruz on the "D L" and the Rangers not scoring runs we will play on the Chi Sox tonight

Matchup: Texas at Chi. White Sox
Time: 8:10 PM EDT (Tue)
Listed pitchers must go: (R) HARDEN, R vs. (L) BUEHRLE, M

Play: Chi. White Sox (ML -118)

The Rangers are in a slump right now. The pitching has not been especially good, and while they can still hit the baseball, the absence of power hitting Nelson Cruz is definitely important. Rich Harden hardly seems like the stopper to the losing streak tonight. Harden has only three quality starts, he has not been sharp lately and he's running into a White Sox entry that looked pretty good in splitting a road series over the weekend in Tampa. Mark Buehrle may also be a man on a mission tonight in his first start since that ridiculous incident last week that saw him ejected by umpire Joe West. Buehrle actually has a nice scoreless inning streak going and looks to have finally regained the form he had been showing for most of last season until his post-perfecto slump. I have no problem with the price considering the present team form and the starting pitchers, so the White Sox are the choice tonight.

The Mets were bombed out by the Padres on Monday night and continue to be a poor road team. But the one exception has been when Mike Pelfrey takes the mound. He's pitching terrific ball and the Mets are 3-1 in Pelfrey's road starts. With Wade LeBlanc crashing back to earth following an unexpectedly spectacular run and the Mets in the mood for some immediate revenge, this is the spot to grab the visitors. I'll lay the moderate price tag and go with Pelfrey and the Mets.

Philadelphia +1.22 over ATLANTA

The Braves are hot while the Phillies are not. Tim Hudson is considered to be one of the premier pitchers in the league and he’s put up great numbers so far this year. In fact, Hudson comes in with a 5-1 record and a 2.24 ERA and over his last three starts, he’s 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA. Now, most will look at Hudson, they’ll look at how hot the Braves are and how cold the Phillies are and then they’ll see the Braves as a seemingly cheap –1.30 favorite and pull the trigger. It all looks good on paper, but let’s have a closer look. The Braves have been beating up on the Pirates and Marlins. They’ve faced 10 stiffs over its last 10 games that included Joe Blanton last night and prior to that it was Maholm, Burres, Duke (twice), Robertson, Ohlendorf, and Charlie Morton to name a few. Before facing a slew of stiffs they were scratching a clawing to score anything. They also faced the Brewers recently with Dave Bush and Doug Davis going and those two guys couldn’t be the 10th pitcher on 99% of the teams in this league. So, yeah, they’re scoring runs but will face a quality starter tonight in Cole Hamels. Hamels (103 BPV, 5-2-2-5-3) hasn't pitched like his vintage 2008 self, but he's not that far off, either. His ERA has dropped about 1½-runs over his last half dozen games and he’s looking sharper with each outing. He’s whiffed 63 batters in 63 IP and he doesn’t issue many walks. Cole Hamels is sharper than Hudson indeed despite the numbers that don’t reflect that. Hudson's (19 BPV, 3-3-5-3-0 PQS) 5-1 record and gaudy ERA don't reflect his skills. Even with his elite GB%, Hudson has to rely on some breaks, such as an 83% strand rate to get results. His luck will turn at some point and this is the perfect spot for that to occur. Hudson has faced the Padres in San Diego, the Giants at SBC park, the Astros, the Cards in St. Louis, the Pirates and the list goes on. The books are begging for Braves money here. You’ve been warned. Play: Philadelphia +1.22 (Risking 2 units).

Cincinnati +1.12 over ST. LOUIS

The Cards came up big in the opener of this series but Bronson Arroyo was long overdue to get rocked and he did. Johnny Cueto (95 BPV, 4-5-5-5-5 PQS) is one of the hottest starters going in the majors. His command has been outstanding with 54 k’s and just 17 walks in 61 frames. On the road he has a BAA of just .213 and his BAA in May was .182. The Reds are scoring runs in droves these days and should be able to put up plenty against P.J. Walters. Walters is in the rotation because of an in jury to Kyle Lohse. His debut was a decent one but it came against that weak hitting group in San Diego and that works out beautifully for this one. He’s appeared in 10 games in his career with the Cards and in 25 IP he’s allowed 28 hits with six of those going yard. He has a career WHIP of 1.64 and an ERA of 6.84. That’s only a handful of games and not a true measure but in his first start of the year in San Diego he only lasted five innings and of the 22 batters he faced, 10 of them flied out. In the minors this season he had an 81% strand rate and that’s a number that won’t repeat itself at this level. So, we get a tag on one of the premier pitchers in the business with an offense that usually gives plenty of support against the most overvalued team in the majors with an unproven rookie pitcher on the hill and an offense that is feeble at best and gets way too much credit. Play: Cincinnati +1.12 (Risking 2 units).

FLORIDA /Milwaukee over 9 –1.16

Totals is something we try and stay away from but damn, this one looks too good to pass up on. The Brewers starter and pen here is a combination that has been disastrous all year long and there’s no reason to expect a change. Dave Bush has been batting practice all year with a BAA of .297, a WHIP of 1.68 and the following are the scores in his five road starts this year: 7-6, 8-1, 3-0 (in San Diego), 7-3 and 15-3. Bush has walked 27 batters and struck out 27 in just 51 IP and he’s also allowed eight bombs. Ricky Nolasco has never been able to get these Brewer batters out. The current Brewers hitters are batting a robust .367 off Nolasco and it’s also worth noting that Milwaukee is second in the NL in runs scored, they’re second in home runs and they’re pretty much in the top three in all major offensive categories. They lose so much because they feature the worst pitching staff in the majors. Furthermore, Nolasco has been prone to giving up the long ball this year and has already allowed nine of them. He’s also allowed 18 hits and 11 runs over his last 9.1 IP. In three games in his career against the Brew Crew, Nolasco has an ERA of 11.81 and has lasted a combined 10.1 innings in those three starts. The Brewers pen will make an appearance here for sure and that’s a horror story in itself. Play: Florida/Milwaukee over 9 (Risking 2.32 units to win 2).

TAMPA BAY –1½ over Toronto

Brian Tallet gets the start for the Jays in place of Dana Eveland, who will likely never pitch for the Jays again. Brian Tallet is not far behind him. Tallet is one of the biggest stiffs you’ll ever see. None of his pitches are strong and he serves up juicy and hittable pitches in every single sequence of pitches to a batter. He had forearm stiffness and was out for a while but he was lousy before that in three starts with an ERA of 6.11 and giving up six bombs in 17 IP. In two rehabs starts, Tallet was brutal, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA and surrendering 11 hits over 5.1 innings. Tallet was 0-1 with an 11.05 ERA in three starts last season against Tampa Bay and the Rays had an off year last season. The Rays bats will wake up tonight. Jeff Niemann does not have to be perfect or anything close to it for this ticket to cash. Still, Niemmann is a quality starter with a ton more upside than his counterpart. Play: Tampa Bay –1½ +1.23 (Risking 2 units).

Pitchers Report - June
By Marc Lawrence

If it's June, school is out. And so too will be the NBA (we think). It's also the time of the season when MLB pitchers look to ace exams in hopes of keeping their teams in the pennant chase. To get a better feel on what to expect, let's examine their results from exams in the past.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in June team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. I'll be back next month with July's Good Month Pitchers. Until then, enjoy

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gavin Floyd - Chicago White Sox: 10-2
Dan Haren - Arizona Diamondbacks 13-4
Felix Hernandez - Seattle Mariners: 12-2
Scott Kazmir - L.A. Angels: 8-4
John Lackey - Boston Red Sox 11-4
Ricky Nolasco - Florida Marlins: 8-2
Andy Pettitte - N.Y. Yankees: 11-5
Tim Wakefield - Boston Red Sox: 11-5
Carlos Zambrano - Chicago Cubs: 14-3

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Oakland Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox Oakland Athletics
+1½-156 at 5dimes > 6h.
Like the Yankees, the Red Sox are typically overpriced. But unlike the Yankees, the Red Sox have not won enough to cover that price as they are just 16-13 this season at home, sitting at negative units. Against the runline, it's even worse as they are 10-19 for -6.4 units. John Lackey has put up a very pedestrian 5.52 ERA at home this season. Gio Gonzalez has been better than that, posting a 4.23 road ERA. In his last three starts, he's averaged 7.1 innings and put together a great 2.53 ERA. Sure, the A's have batting problems but Boston is just 4-15 vs. the runline this season vs. AL teams hitting .255 or worse. I like Oakland to keep this close.

Tampa Bay Rays (34-18) at Toronto Blue Jays (31-22)
(R) Jeff Niemann (5-0) vs. (L) Brian Tallet (1-1)

Look for the Rays to continue their success against the Blue Jays. Tampa Bay has played well away from home. They have won eight of their last nine games on the road and nine of the last twelve meetings versus Toronto.

Go with the Rays with Jeff Niemann on the hill. The Rays have won eight of Niemann's last nine starts.

Tampa Bay's right-hander Jeff Niemann is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last three starts and is 2-1 with a 4.67 ERA in four career starts versus Toronto.

Toronto's lefthander Brian Tallet is 1-1 with a 6.11 ERA in his last three starts and is 2-1 with a 6.03 ERA in three career starts versus the Rays.

The A's are at the tail-end of a long road trip and really are not that good away from home or at night. Oakland does not average enough runs per game to win against a quality pitcher like Lackey. Look for the Red Sox to get a convincing home win. Take Boston.

3* on Baltimore Orioles +206

Reasons the Orioles win:

1.) System Play. We'll Play On - Road underdogs with a money line of +150 or more (BALTIMORE) - after 2 straight games where they committed no errors, in June games. This is a 57-49 ML System hitting 53.8% over the last 5 seasons while gaining +50.6 units betting 1 unit/game.

2.) Brian Matusz is one Orioles' starter who has experienced success against the Yankees. Matusz has posted a 2.37 ERA and 1.263 WHIP in 3 starts against the Yankees, allowine 5 earned runs in 19 innings. He has allowed 3 runs or less and has gone at least 6 innings in all 3 of his lifetime starts vs. New York. Javier Vasquez is clearly the Yankees' work starter and should not be this heavily favored. Vasquez is 3-5 with a 6.86 ERA and 1.619 WHIP for the season, and 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA and 2.281 WHIP in home starts in 2010. We'll take the value. Bet the Orioles on the road.

Atlanta (-122) for 2.5 Units

Value is with the Braves knowing that Tim Hudson is 0-5 with a 4.01 ERA in 9 starts vs Philadelphia at the same time, he has gotten just 1.7 runs per game of support vs them. And Cole Hamels has an 8-2 record in 13 starts vs Atlanta. Hudson, however, is catching the Phillies in a bad slump. Philadelphia is averaging 1.5 rpg over their last 10 on a .199 BA. And Hudson sports a strong 1.35 ERA over his last 3 outings. On the other hand, the Braves have hit lefties well recently (.301 BA last 10) and should, finally, give Hudson some run support in this series against Hamels, who has shown vulnerability on the road. With the Braves at 12-5 in game 2 of a series, we'll jump on the Braves here

double-dime bet 978 CWS (-116) Bodog vs 977 TEX
Analysis: If there is one thing I've learned in watching Mark Beuhrle over the past few years it's the fact that when he gets hot, you've simply gotta throw your money at him, and watch him double it. Beuhrle has always been an extremely streaky pitcher, and we're catching at an amazing time today. Here's a guy that pitched fantastic two starts ago, and then came out and pitched 3 shutout innings in his last start before getting tossed. So, not only are we getting the guy on a hot streak, but we're getting him fully rested on a hot streak (since he only through 40 something pitches in his last start).

On the other side, I really am a fan of Rich Harden, but he certainly isn't performing outside of Texas very well. He's tough on the opposition, because you know he's only going to throw fastballs and changeups, yet he can still be extremely dominant, even with only those two pitches. However, the issue today is not just the fact that he's had some rough starts on the road this year, but also the fact that he's a strikeout pitcher. Meaning that even if he is pitching well, we'll likely see him for no more than 6 or 7 innings due to pitch count.

Also, we've just got to keep in mind that this Texas ball club is a completely different team on the road. They are just 8-15 on the road this season. Today, those struggles should be exemplified with a starter on the mound who struggles to hold it down on the road, and facing a starter for the Sox that seems to be catching fire! I like the Sox to win this one 5-2.

dime bet 966 SFG (-130) Sportbet vs 965 COL
Analysis:
Hammel & Zito MUST START

Colorado's Jason Hammel owns a 6.93 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and .365 OBP on the season. The Rockies have lost all three of Hammel's road starts, in which he owns an 8.80 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, and .389 OBP. Several Giants have had success against Hammel. Aubrey Huff is 2-for-6 (.333) with a double & a homer. Bengie Molina is 3-for-6 (.500) with a homer. Freddy Sanchez is 2-for-6 with a double. Pablo Sandoval owns a .364 OBP against Hammel. Nate Schierholtz is only 1-for-7 (.143) against Hammel, but that one hit was a homer.

The Giants' Barry Zito has dominated Colorado over the years. Zito's 2.00 career ERA against the Rockies is his best against any opponent, and he has a 1.24 ERA against them in five outings since the start of last year. He beat Colorado for the third straight time - all at home - with eight strong innings in a 5-2 win April 30. This quote says it all: "He's always tough against us. I can't hit him," said Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who is 5 for 33 (.152) against Zito. "I've never been able to hit him. Hopefu*lly one day I'll figure him out."

Zito, who has given up 3 runs or less in all but one of his 10 starts this season, has owned more Colorado hitters than just Tulowitzki. Todd Helton is just 5-for-20 (.250) against Zito. Clint Barmes is 4-for-22 (.182), although two of the hits were homers. Brad Hawpe is just 4-for-21 (.190), but again, two of the hits were homers. Melvin Mora is just 5-for-31 (.161). Miguel Olivo is 2-for-13 (.154) against Zito. Ryan Spilborghs is just 6-for-26 (.231). Ian Stewart is just 1-for-11 (.091) against Zito. Chris Iannetta is just 1-for-10 (.100) against Zito.

Bottom line: We have a huge edge in starting pitching and I believe we have the bullpen edge, too. Sure, Colorado's pen owns the better season numbers, but the Giants pen sports a 1.90 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, .297 OBP, and .205 BAA at home. That's more than enough for me. Take San Francisco/Zito over Colorado/Hammel.
