New York Mets vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

New York Mets -118

The Mets were blown out last night in the opener of this series as Mike Pelfrey once again was hit hard. It was the fourth loss in five games for New York since the All-Star break but it should be able to recover tonight and get the offense moving in the right direction. The Mets have averaged only 2.0 rpg during this five-game stretch but to their credit they have faced some tough pitching. That changes tonight. Arizona snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory last night so it is not playing much better right now. The difference is that the Diamondbacks has been struggling all season long and they have won consecutive games only once since mid-June and three times since the end of May. They are 15-34 over their last 49 games since winning a season-high four straight games from May 19-22. R.A. Dickey looks to stop the bleeding and he has done a phenomenal job this season for someone whose expectations were very low. He has a 2.62 ERA on the season and in 11 starts, he has thrown nine quality outings so he is obviously keeping the Mets around most of the time. He is winless in his last four starts which is far from his fault as run support have been the biggest issue but he should be able to get some tonight. Barry Enright will be making his fourth start of the season tonight and while the previous three have been decent, there has been nothing special. He has been unable to go deep into games and that means the Diamondbacks bullpen will come into play. That is not good as the ERA of the pen is 6.70 which is easily the worst in baseball. Arizona is 6-24 against N.L. starters with an Era of 3.50 or better this season while the Mets are 14-4 in their last 18 games against starters with a WHIP greater than 1.30. 3* New York Mets

Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

Chicago White Sox -123

1 Unit on Chicago White Sox -123

Seattle had high hopes entering this season, but those hopes have already been crushed just over the halfway mark. The M's have lost 13 of their last 16 games and 8 of their last 9 at home. Seattle brings Fister to the hill tonight, and while he has a low home ERA, I can't overlook the fact that the M's have lost 5 of his last 6 home starts and 7 of his last 8 starts against the AL Central. The Mariners have especially struggled against lefty starters, so facing Danks will be no treat. The Mariners are 0-6 in their last 6 home games versus a left-handed starter and 6-18 in their last 24 games overall versus a left-handed starter. It is also worth noting that the White Sox are 4-0 in Danks' last 4 starts as a road favorite. The White Sox are now 22-6 in their last 28 games versus a right-handed starter, and I'll side with them tonight

4* CHICAGO WHITE SOX over SEATTLE

Beauty may be in the eyes of the beholder, but we simply do not get the market attraction for Seattle here. So the opportunity to play the far better offense, better starting pitcher and better bullpen is impossible to pass up in this new bargain bin price range.

The White Sox got more than just a “W” in the standings last night; after their brilliant run Sunday’s bitter loss at Minnesota (led 6-3 in the bottom of the 9th) was the type that could have signaled an end to the momentum. Instead they came out with a dominating win on Monday as they continue to “take care of business” – their run is now at 17-4 in their last 21 games against opponents with losing records. Now John Danks gets a chance to control a lineup that he held to just two runs over eight innings (no W’s) in an earlier home win, and the bullpen behind him does not bring a fatigue rating (Matt Thornton is off of back-to-back games, but at a manageable 25 pitches).

Meanwhile the floundering Mariners are showing no signs of life, and in going 2-10 over their last four series they have been held to two runs or less seven times. Doug Fister is laboring badly to regain that early season form, and since his return to the rotation it has been an abysmal 0-2/7.08 over four starts, with the lack of pop from his arm showing in an ugly ratio of 29 Hits allowed vs. only nine K’s. It must be noted that the strong early start was largely influenced by a favorable BABIP count (of the 122 pitchers that have worked at least 80 innings he still checks in at #104), and that there is no track record that tells us that his true path is to get back to that level.

Tuesday National League Game of the week with Perfect system + 16-2 Dog with Bite that wins outright Angle play. Monday card sweeps as MLB Now 30 games over. 500

On Tuesday the free MLB Play is on Over the total in the Brewers at Pirates game. Rotation numbers 951/52 at 7:05 eastern. This game fits a nice totals system that plays to the over for certain road teams off a road win if they scored 4 or less runs and 4 or less hits vs an opponnet that scored 2 or less runs. This system hits at 74% long term. Pittsburgh starter Lincoln has struggled this year with an era over 5. Milwaukee counters with D. Bush who has historically srtuggled in road starts. Look for this game to go over the posted nine run total tonight. On Tursday I have the National League Game of the Week, backed with a perfect system. I also have a 16-2 Dog with Bite Power angle play. Monday card cashed both games as we are now 30 games over.500.. For the free play take the over in the Brewers at Pirates game. GC

Listed pitchers must go: (R) BUSH, D vs. (R) LINCOLN, B

Play: Milwaukee (ML -122)

If the Brewers could limit their schedule to play just the Pirates, they would be a juggernaut. The Monday night win by Milwaukee means they have now defeated the Bucs in 43 of their last 58 meetings, which is pretty remarkable. I like the road team's chances of extending that dominance tonight. Dave Bush is on a surprising roll for the Brewers, tossing six consecutive quality starts and he should have little trouble handling a Pittsburgh squad that is beyond dismal against opposing right handers. Brad Lincoln is a promising starter for the Pirates, but he's been mostly mediocre in his first trip around the majors, and I would expect him to have some problems with a potent Brewers attack tonight. It's never that tough to pull the trigger against the Pirates when the price is reasonable, and that's the case here, so make Milwaukee the play.

Matchup: Boston at Oakland
Time: 10:05 PM EDT (Tue)
Listed pitchers must go: (R) WAKEFIELD, T vs. (L) BRADEN, D

Play: Boston (ML +112) SOLID GOLD PLAY

Dallas Braden shocked the baseball world with his perfect game earlier this season. Ever since, it's been all downhill for the lefty. Braden is 0-5 following the perfecto, and the A's are 0-8 as a team when Braden starts. Now add in the fact that he's just off the DL and prospects for a good night by Braden seem very limited. Tim Wakefield is hardly reliable for the Red Sox. But the old knuckleballer has enjoyed quite a bit of success in this ballpark and while they're still shorthanded with injuries, Boston is the better team and I'm surprised to see them installed as dogs tonight. This looks like an excellent value spot at the price, and I'm backing the Red Sox to get a second straight win against the A's.

Scott Rickenbach’s MLB 10* (TOP PLAY) OVER in Minnesota vs Cleveland @ 8:10 ET: Slowey vs Masterson – RATING SYSTEM: Plays range from 6* on up to 10* so this includes 7* and 8* picks as well. 6*, 7*, 8*: most common play ratings with a 9* being a Top Play! 10* plays are a step above a 9* Top Play. The *10* is Scott's highest rated selection!

We used this over last night and it won in solid fashion and we see no reason not to come right back with it here. This is especially true because last night’s game totaled 14 runs even though the Twins went just 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position last night! Look for Minnesota’s powerful lineup (they are still strong even without Justin Morneau) to enjoy much more clutch hitting success against Justin Masterson of the Indians. The Cleveland right-hander is 3-8 this season with an ugly 5.31 ERA. Additionally, he’s gone 0-1 with a 9.58 ERA in his most recent two starts. As for hoping to fare better against Minnesota, it’s unlikely that Masterson’s hopes will be answered. He’s 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA in his four career starts against the Twins. Overall, Minnesota has hit .301 against Masterson in his career. Additionally, the Indians right-hander is 1-5 with a 6.75 ERA and a .307 BAA in his road games this season. Teams have gotten to Masterson for at least five runs in four of his last six starts. In his career, Masterson has solid home numbers but, on the road he’s gone 2-15 with a 5.47 ERA! Additionally, in his career, Masterson also has a marked disparity in his day/night results. In day games he’s gone 6-5 with a 3.36 ERA but, at night he’s gone 7-18 with a 4.92 ERA. The Twins, even without Morneau, are loaded with left-handed pop and also have a few switch-hitters on the roster. The reason that is also a key here is that Masterson has been hammered by left-handed lumber throughout his career (.301 BAA) and we look for the Twins to bounce back from last night’s 10-4 loss.

Though the Twins should hit the ball very well tonight they will certainly need all the runs they can get. That’s because we also project Kevin Slowey of the Twins to struggle in this match-up. The Minnesota right-hander has allowed at least five earned runs in five of his last seven starts! Additionally, his last seven outings have seen him average less than five innings per game. That’s bad news for a Twins bullpen that got roughed up yesterday and that has regressed some in recent weeks. Speaking of bullpens, the Indians bullpen ranks in the lower third of the league and certainly could be an issue today as well with Masterson expected to get pounded. As for Slowey of the Twins, he allowed just three earned runs in five innings the last time he faced Cleveland but the Indians hammered him for nine hits in those five innings. The Twins are an amazing 13-3-2 to the over in their last 18 games and we see no signs of that trend stopping…especially not with these two hurlers on the mound. As for the Indians, they continue to hit the ball extremely well even though they are without some key bats in their lineup. With each win their confidence grows and the Tribe are hitting better than .300 during their current winning streak. On a pleasant evening at Target Field, the hitters continue to rule as the Indians just won’t slow down right now and the Twins love hitting at their new home park. Play OVER the total in Minnesota as a *10* Top Play selection.

Scott Rickenbach’s MLB 8* (Regular Play) OVER in Baltimore vs Tampa Bay @ 7:05 ET: Arrieta vs Garza – RATING SYSTEM: Plays range from 6* on up to 10* so this includes 7* and 8* picks as well. 6*, 7*, 8*: most common play ratings with a 9* being a Top Play! 10* plays are a step above a 9* Top Play. The *10* is Scott's highest rated selection!

Jake Arrieta of the Orioles is coming off of back to back strong starts but they both came on the road. At home in his rookie season, Arrieta has a 6.06 ERA, a 1.84 WHIP, and he’s been pounced at a .297 clip. Of particular concern for the Orioles right-hander is that he’s walked as many as he’s struck out so far in his rookie campaign. Also, Arrieta has been pounded by left-handed hitters so far at the MLB level. He’s been pounded at a .342 clip by left-hand bats and the Rays are loaded with dangerous left-handed lumber including a number of switch-hitters who will be stepping in on the left side of the plate to face Arrieta. The Rays will step into the batters box with plenty of confidence as they have gone 10-3 their last 13 games and have averaged nearly 6 runs per game during this hot streak. The Rays are 12-5 to the over this season in road games where the posted total is 9 or 9.5 runs. Tampa Bay is also 22-13 to the over in divisional games. After last night’s game snuck under the total, look for tonight’s to fly over the total.

Baltimore’s sticks have been a little quieter of late but this is still a team that has averaged 9.9 hits per game their last 10 games. The Orioles have not enjoyed much success against Matt Garza of the Rays but we look for him to struggle after the long layoff. This will be Garza’s first start since July 10th and a long layoff like this can be tough on any starting pitcher. He may struggle to find his rhythm and the Orioles are traditionally a solid hitting club when at home. Garza’s most recent start was solid but, prior to that, his last eight starts had seen Garza allow 34 earned runs in 42 innings of work! That equates to a 7.29 ERA and we look for his struggles to resume this evening. Garza is 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA in day games this season but he’s just 7-5 with a 4.52 ERA in night games this year. Also, Garza has averaged just 5 innings per start in his last 9 starts and the Rays bullpen has had some letdowns in recent weeks. Speaking of bullpen issues, the Orioles relievers are getting hit at a .277 clip this season and that ranks among the worst in the league. Overall, the O’s pen is in the lower third of the league while the Rays bullpen has been dropping in the rankings recently due to some subpar outings! Play OVER the total in Baltimore as an *8* Regular Play selection.

2** Play on: UNDER the TOTAL

This is am Umpire / Weather play ONLY. If we had some sharper starting pitchers on the mound tonight, it would certainly qualify as a 4* or higher BEST BET. But as it is, we'll rate as a normal 2** selection.

When taking a look at this year's Home Plate UMPIRE stats, the top two 'UNDER' guys are Greg Gibson and Jim Wolf... who both come in with identical 4-13 O/U records on the season. But right there in the #3 spot is tonight's 'Man in Blue' down here in South Florida. And that would be MIKE DIMURO, who comes in with a 4-12 O/U record on the year... and only 7.6 combined runs per game. That 7.6 RPG is even lower than previous two umpire mentioned (Gibson: 8.5 / Wolf: 8.3).

We don't just take a look at YTD stats when we are are studying the Umpires. Just like starting pitchers, it's important to look at CURRENT FORM in regards to the men behind the dish. We call it our 'What have you done for me lately' query. And Dimuro's has been an 'UNDER' machine. He's gone a PERFECT 0-4 O/U in his last 4 games (only 5.5 runs per game). And since the middle of May, he's gone a remarkable 1-9 O/U in his last 10 games... with an average of only 6.1 runs per game. His YTD records include 1-4-1 O/U in All NATIONAL LEAGUE games... and 0-2 O/U in "Lefty versus Lefty" pitching matchups. I found that last one intriguing and studied it a bit more. In the last 1.5 seasons, Dimuro has gone a PERFECT 0-6 O/U... with an average of just 6.3 runs per game. He's also gone 0-2-1 O/U in ALL Rockie games the last 12 months... 0-1 O/U in Jeff Francis starts... and 1-4 O/U in ALL Marlin games. Throw in the fact that pre-game Weather forecasts project the winds to be blowing IN from right-center in excess of 18-20 MPH.... and we'll gladly accept an assist from Mother Nature.

Neither starter is in top notch form, but we do note the following: Nate Robertosn is a perfect 0-2 O/U in two career starts vs the Rockies. And Jeff Francis has a very good career ERA 'In THIS Park' (2.25).

4 Unit Play. #977 Take Over 8 -120 Boston at Oakland (10:05 p.m., Tuesday July. 20)

The last 2 times Tim Wakefield started the Red Sox pitching staff has given up a total of 13 runs. Tonight we look for the Red Sox pitching staff to struggle again as Wakefield will give up his share of easy runs. The last 8 meetings between these two AL teams 7 of them have gone over the total. Oakland is 5-2-1 O/U in their last 8 games and the Red Sox are 7-3 O/U in their last 10 games as an underdog.

BOSTON @ OAKLAND
Dallas Braden of the Oakland Athletics is best known for tossing a Perfect Game this season, but he is actually having a solid year that is not reflected by his record, while the veteran Tim Wakefield has been terrible for the Boston Red Sox. Thus, the Athletics look like a sold play at home here at a cheap price.

Braden may be 4-7, but he has a 3.83 ERA and an excellent 1.19 WHIP, and he has allowed three earned runs or less in three straight starts.. His numbers are also slightly better here at Oakland Alameda Coliseum, where he is 3-4 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, and the last time he faced the Red Sox in this stadium, he posted a Quality Start while allowing just two runs on six hits in six innings last year.

Wakefield is a disappointing 3-8 with a 5.65 ERA, and the worst part is that he is not showing any signs of improvement. He lasted only two innings his last time out vs. Texas, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, and that came on the heels of another poor effort in his prior outing, where he was charged with six earned runs while allowing 10 baserunners in 5.2 innings vs. the Tampa Bay Rays.

Keep in mind also that the Red Sox are using a makeshift lineup these days, with the likes of Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell all on the Disabled List. As a result, the Sox are batting an un-Sox-like .239 over their last 10 games while going just 3-7.

Look for Boston to continue to struggle vs. Braden on Tuesday as Oakland gets the home victory.

OffshoreInsiders.com Senior Handicapper Matt Rivers has a comp play winner for Tuesday is on the Boston Red Sox getting 106.

Boston is a beat up team that is a complete shell of itself but I still don't mind them in this spot. Let's be honest here, this Oakland team is as mediocre as they get. The A's are an extremely average team with a pitcher in Dallas Braden who has done less than nothing since the perfect game.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the Oakland lefthander because he has good stuff and certainly can dominate when on. But lately Braden has been injured and not nearly as good. The guy hasn't been on a big league mound in a month and frankly I'm not sure what he can do right now. I don't see him lasting all that long as the A's coaches have to be very careful with him after the recent issues and therefore even if he is alright we should see a lot of a mediocre Oakland bullpen.

Tim Wakefield and that knuckleball have been awful of late. The last two starts have been debacles but I'm really not all that concerned about it because the guy has been there and done that and at the drop of a hat can be good. 12 earned runs in seven innings would concern me a lot more with almost any other pitcher but Wakefield could all of a sudden twirl a gem with his style and it would not surprise me in the least. That knuckleball will be awful and then will all of a sudden be unhittable just like that. There really is no rhyme or reason with that pitch so laying a lot with it is silly but getting it in a decent enough spot isn't bad.

Duston Pedroia is not playing obviously but the Red Sox still have some big boppers in Ortiz and Youkilis and in the end here should be alright. In a bottom of a barrel comp play I'll back the visitors from Beantown here in OakTown.

The pick: Boston +106

Tuesday's Action 20 DIME selection on the Milwaukee Brewers on the road in agaanst the Pirates. As I publish this release, the Brewers are favored in the -125 to -135 range both here in Vegas and offsheore. Note that you must list the Brewers' Dave Bush and the Pirates' Brad Lincoln as the staroing pitchers. If either does not start, this play is VOID!

Brewers

43-15. That’s the Milwaukee Brewers’ record against the Pirates in the last 58 meetings. Going back to late August of 2009, the Brewers are on a 12-3 roll against Pittsburgh, including five wins in six tries at PNC Park this season.

Tonight, Milwaukee hands the ball to Dave Bush, who is 4-0 with a 2.80 ERA in his last seven starts against Pittsburgh, with the Brewers winning all seven games. And Bush has been very good of late, posting a 2.39 ERA in his last six starts. In those six contests, Busch gave up the following earned run totals: 2, 2, 1, 2, 2 and 1.

Granted, the Brewers haven’t cashed in on Bush’s strong outings lately, losing three of his last four starts. But they only managed one run in each of the three defeats. The offense figures to get cranked up today against Pittsburgh rookie right-hander Brad Lincoln, who is facing the Brewers for the second straight start. In his last outing on July 11, Lincoln gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings, with the Pirates falling 6-5.

And in his start previous to that, Lincoln got rocked at Houston, allowing five runs in five innings of a 6-2 loss. For the season, Lincoln is just 1-3 with a 5.14 ERA in seven starts, with Pittsburgh scoring just two victories.

The Brewers are playing better ball of late (6-2 last eight games), while the young Bucs continue their freefall, losing nine of their last 13 games. And going back to June 6, Pittsburgh is in a 9-27 funk.

Tuesday's Play

RL GAME OF THE YEAR
50 DIME Tampa Bay Rays Run Line, and will be insisting on the listed pitchers, as you will see in my analysis below. As this play is released %13%d at 12:30 p.m. Pacific, the Rays are -130 pretty much across the board. Be sure to shop the numbers as best you can, to get the best possible number.

Analysis

The Baltimore Orioles have the worst record in baseball at 29-63. The Orioles are especially bad in their brutal AL East Division, losing 31 of 40 division matchups.

Tampa Bay has defeated Baltimore in six of seven meetings, winning by an average of 3.1 runs per game.

The Rays own the best road mark in the majors and have decided edges everywhere in this matchup, including the starting pitching matchup of Matt Garza versus rookie Jacob Arrieta.

Garza is 5-3 with a 3.90 ERA on the road. He last pitched 10 days ago, shutting out Cleveland on one hit in six innings. Garza is 2-0 against the Orioles this season, holding them to two earned runs in 16 innings with 14 strikeouts.

Arrieta has been pitching better, but still struggles with his command. He has as many walks as strikeouts. He's also had problems pitching at home where his ERA is 6.06.

The Rays can't afford to take the Orioles lightly, trying to catch the Yankees. The Rays showed on Monday night that they wouldn't let down following a weekend series with the Yankees beating Baltimore by seven runs.

ChiSox (-125) for 2 Units

The Mariners continue to struggle at home (1-8) and should slide in this spot. The Mariners, which are 6-12 in game 2 of a series following a loss, are a miserable 21-45 as a dog in this price range. We'll look for John Danks to continue his success vs Seattle: 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 3 starts. And as a road favorite in this price range, the 'Sox are 4-0 with Danks. Ichiro, in particular has struggled with Danks (4 for 22). We'll look for Chicago to win its 5th straight in this series.

25* FAT POCKETS MLB TB Rays

Tampa Bay (56-36) improved to 6-1 against Baltimore with an 8-1 win Monday. It was the teams' first meeting since mid-April, when the Rays swept a three-game series at Camden Yards by a score of 22-8.

Baltimore (29-63), meanwhile, has lost four straight, getting outscored 25-6 while hitting .150 with runners in scoring position over that stretch. It's also lost five in a row at home.

The Orioles' struggles at the plate don't bode well against Garza (10-5, 4.05 ERA), who won there May 12 to improve to 5-0 with a 3.00 ERA lifetime at Camden Yards. Overall, Garza is 8-1 with a 2.48 ERA in 10 career starts against Baltimore. He is 2-0 this season -- giving up two earned runs in 16 innings and striking out 14
