Thursday's Streaking And Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking

Mat Latos, San Diego Padres (11-4, 2.48 ERA)

A huge part of the Padres’ surprise success in 2010 has been the impressive play of Latos. The right hander has pitched his way into Cy Young talks, especially his recent performances. Latos is 6-0 in his last seven starts, including winning three straight heading into Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He returned from 16 days on the DL in his last trip to the bump, giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings of work for a 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Vin Mazzaro, Oakland Athletics (6-2, 3.45 ERA)

The A’s young righty hasn’t tasted defeat in five games, going 4-0 with a slim 2.12 ERA in that span. He has allowed more than three earned runs in just two of his 10 starts this season and is coming off a solid appearance against the Chicago White Sox last weekend. He went six innings, giving up only two runs on three hits for a 10-2 win Saturday.

Slumping

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (4-8, 5.55 ERA)

The Tigers righty didn’t pitch terrible in his last trip to the mound, putting in a quality start against the Toronto Blue Jays. But, Porcello did walk four batters and missed out on getting his first MLB win since May 23. He was called up from the minors to pitch in a doubleheader versus the Cleveland Indians two weeks ago, giving up only one run on six hits in eight innings of work. However, he was dealt another no-decision in a 2-1 loss. His control has been off and on since returning to the bigs.

Ubaldo Jimenez (15-2, 2.75 ERA)

Jimenez was once a shoe-in to win the NL Cy Young. But after his last four starts, the Rockies righthander has fallen off his record pace. Jimenez is just 1-1 in that span after allowing 18 total runs. In his last appearance, he was knocked around for six runs on only three hits while walking six batters in just two innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Debuting

Dustin Moseley, New York Yankees (0-0, 4.22 ERA)

The injury to Andy Pettitte has forced the Yankees to hand the ball to 28-year-old Moseley for Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Indians. Moseley has worked exclusively out of the bullpen since joining the big-league club in early July. He got in just under five innings of work against the Kansas City Royals this weekend, giving up only one hit while striking out and walking one batter. He is 8-7 with a 5.41 ERA during his MLB career, the past four years spent with the Los Angeles Angels.

Joe Saunders, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-10, 4.62 ERA)

Saunders gets thrown to the wolves in his first start for the D-backs. The lefthander was dealt from Los Angeles earlier this week and will now face one of the toughest lineups in baseball. Saunders did leave L.A. on a high note, going seven innings and allowing only one run on seven hits in a 1-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. He’s faced the Phillies only once before, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings during interleague action while with the Angels back in June 2008.

HOT LINES

Thursday's Best MLB Bets

Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox (-165, 8.5)

The Mariners must leave their bats back in Seattle whenever they got on the road. The M's have scored just 14 runs in their six away games since the All-Star break.

They've been particularly poor at the plate when facing righthanders, batting just .193 over their last 10. That plays right into the right hand of White Sox's starter Freddy Garcia, who has just one win over his last five starts but has pitched well in all except his last.

"There's nothing you can do," the 11-year veteran said following his last outing. "Continue to do your thing, the little things, make the pitches when you need them and go from there."

The M's, who are 1-7 in their last eight stops in Chicago, counter with the inexperience of spot starter David Pauley, who is 0-5 in his brief career.

The righthander is 0-2 this season and has yet to go deeper than six innings - bad news for a struggling bullpen.

Pick: Chicago White Sox

Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-150, 8)

It's been one month since Madison Bumgarner made his season debut and he has already developed into a quality starter in that short period of time.

Bumgarner's last five starts have all come on the road and he is 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA over that span. He allowed just five hits and two runs over seven innings in his last outing against the Diamondbacks.

"I just try to relax, and when stuff starts to happen, I just slow it down a little bit," the rookie lefthander said. "I feel like I've done a pretty good job of that."

Conversely, the Marlins are 1-4 in Anibel Sanchez's 1-4 last five starts and he hasn't earned a win since June 22. The righthander has allowed 12 runs over his last 16 innings of work.

The Marlins are batting just .226 against lefties in their last 10 while the Giants are pounding righties to the tune of .279 over that span. The Giants are 4-1 against the Marlins this season.

Pick: SF Giants

Thursday MLB Diamond Cutter System wins by 4 runs per game + 18-2 XXX-Large Dominator system lead the card. Wednesday TOP play cashes again. Both games are night games

On Thursday the free play is on the SF Giants. Game 908 at 3:45 eastern. The Gaints qualify in a nice system that plays on certain home favorites off a win where they used 5 or more pitchers. SF has been killing it all month, winning 18 of 25 games thus far. They have a solid home bullpen that has a 2.23 era. Their rookie starter Bumgarner has a 2.66 era on the season spanning 6 starts and 40+ innings. Florida has trouble with left handers as they average 3.9 runs per game. Look for the Giants to hook the fish again here today. On the Thursday card I have a Diamond cutter system that wins by an average 7-3 score + an NL Dominator system that has cashed 18 of 20 times and has a Big pitching edge. Wednesday Top play cashes again.. For the free play take the San Francisco Giants. GC

Game: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Current Line: Philadelphia (-155)

Over/Under: 9.5

Play On: Philadelphia (-155)

Inside the Board Room:
Philly slammed the Diamondbacks last night 7-1, falling 1 RBI short of another brilliant full day on the mound for Phillies golden boy Roy Halladay. Throw in an outstanding opening day start for new Philly outfielder Domonic Brown and life is good. Kendrick will start on the mound for Philly today, giving Arizona a chance for more thaan just one run tonight, but with the Phils swinging good the past few days, it wont help the Dbacks. All Philly - All Day Today!

3* SD Padres

When the Padres close out their three-game series with the Dodgers at Petco Park tonight they will send Mat Latos to the mound knowing he has cashed in each of his last seven team starts, including 3-0 at home. He's also 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA in his career team starts during July, including 5-0 the last five. With Latos in commanding KW form with four walks and 22 strikeouts in his last three starts, look for more of the same here this evening. We recommend a strong 3-unit play on San Diego.

SPORTS WAGERS

MONTREAL –10 over Toronto

The Argos have already matched last year’s win total with three and have surpassed the win total many predicted for them this year. No doubt the Argos are this year’s surprise team and they’re going in the right direction but this looks like a major letdown week. You see, the Argos have played four very close and intense games and that takes its toll. In week one they lost by 14 in Calgary but make no mistake, the game was very close throughout. In week 2 they beat Winnipeg by two, followed by fourth quarter comebacks against Calgary and last week against B.C, when a pick-6 by Byron Parker with under three minutes to go put the Argos up by four. Cleo Lemon is last in the CFL in pass completions and despite the 3-1 record, the Argos have allowed more points than they’ve scored. They’ve caught every single team at the right time and they may also have caught teams taking them a bit too lightly. So, while the Argos deserve a lot of credit the fact is they’re out of its class here. The Als are an offensive juggernaut and you can double that when they play at home. This is a good situation for the Als in that they’ve finally had a full week to prepare after a difficult three-game trip to open the season. The Als, too, are 3-1 but they have not come close to peaking yet. Even in its 37-14 win over Hamilton last week, they used seven FG’s to score 21 points and had they been sharp they would’ve scored a major on at least half of those. Well, the Als have now been home for two weeks with a comfortable routine and it’s worth noting that beating the Argos gives them great pleasure. No, check that, beating them is not satisfying enough, ruining them is. Expect the Argos bubble to burst in the what is the perfect set-up for the Als, that being first place in the East is up for grabs and the Argos are simply not a legit first-place team. Play: Montreal –10 (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

The White Sox have shown a lot of power in their bats during this series with Seattle. That will give Freddy Garcia some confidence coming off of a pretty lousy performance at Oakland. San Fran Giants - 145 game at 3:35!

The 58-44 Giants are a smooth 18-5 the last 23 and they will pound this Fla Marlins pitcher today as the Marlins A Sanchez is struggling big time at close to a 6 ERA. The Fla Marlins have trouble hitting lefty's and they will not get to Rookie Bamgarner as he has spun a nice 4-0 mark the last 4 and a 1.44 ERA. The Giants are the sharp side here today as Rz is hot!! The Vegas lines makers have respect for this rookie hurler and the Marlins hurler is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts. 2** Play on: UNDER the TOTAL

JERRY LAYNE gets the call tonight in the Windy City as your home plate Umpire... and he's been 'trending UNDER" on a big-time basis as of late. Layne comes in on a 1-3 O/U run in his last 4 games with an average of only 6.7 combined runs per game. And in his last 10 games dating back to late May, Layne has gone 2-8 O/U overall. He just worked the Cincy / Houston game on Sunday in which the OU line was 8.5 runs. Total runs scored in that one was only FOUR.... and he also had a solid K/BB ratio of 16 to 5. Last year, Layne had similar low-scoring results with an overall record of 19-30-4 O/U. He's also had great results in regards to each of tonight's two opponents.

In Seattle Mariner games, LAYNE has gone a PERFECT 0-5 O/U in the last 4 seasons... with an average of only 5.8 combined runs per game. And in Chicago White Sox games, LAYNE has gone 3-9-1 O/U in the same time span. That includes 1-3 O/U "in THIS park". We also note that in Thursday 'Getaway Day' games, Layne has gone a PERFECT 0-7 O/U!

David Pauley of the Mariners has looked very god since the call-up from Tacoma. he's worked three STRAIGHT Quality Starts in a row... with an ERA of only 2.70 and a 10-3 K/BB ratio. And the three teams that he has faced are not slouches either (Red Sox / Yankees / White Sox). His Seattle teammates are 4-10 O/U in Game Four of a series... 2-8 O/U after allowing 5+ runs... and 2-7 O/U as an Underdog of +150 or higher.

Freddy Garcia of the White Sox plays into his STRENGTHS tonight. He's a much more effective pitcher at HOME, where his ERA is only 2.33 in his last 4 games (1-3 O/U). He's also a much better pitcher at NIGHT, where his YTD ERA is a full two runs LESS than in daytime starts. Garcia is 1-7 O/U when pitching on THURSDAYS and 1-5 O/U at home against sub-.500 opponents.

Going to ride them again tonight after winning big on them yesterday at -105, the number is near my limit for moneyline wagers, but I like them a ton tonight, with Matt Latos on the hill for them at 11-4 on the year and under a 1 ERA his last 3 games. Padillia toes the rubber for LA and had looked good as of late, but I like the Pads at home who have the hotter bats in the rubber match at home tonight. Pads are money at yhome, 7-1 their last 8 games and off a 6-1 win last night against LA.

dime bet 910 SDP (-145) Bodog vs 909 LOS
Analysis:
Padres -145

Going to ride them again tonight after winning big on them yesterday at -105, the number is near my limit for moneyline wagers, but I like them a ton tonight, with Matt Latos on the hill for them at 11-4 on the year and under a 1 ERA his last 3 games. Padillia toes the rubber for LA and had looked good as of late, but I like the Pads at home who have the hotter bats in the rubber match at home tonight. Pads are money at yhome, 7-1 their last 8 games and off a 6-1 win last night against LA.

Play 1 Unit on on the Padres again!!

LA Dodgers Over (6) for 2 Units

Both of these starters have been outstanding recently: Padilla has been brilliant since late June while Latos hasn't thrown a bad game since late April at Florida. Nevertheless, we'll look for runs to exceed the 'total' tonight. The Dodgers are 10-1-1 O/U when their opponent allows 2 runs or less in previous game. Padilla is 5-0-1 O/U in his last 6 vs the NLW and 5-1-1 O/U on the road. The Padres are 20-7-2 O/U in their last 29 at home when the 'total' is 6' or lower. SD is also 5-0 O/U after allowing 2 runs or less in previous game and 9-1 O/U as a favorite. Latos, who was wild in his last start vs Los Angeles back in September of last year at Chavez Ravine, is overdue for a bad outing. And the Dodgers' bullpen has not gotten it done recently (5.75 ERA this month). "Over" it is.

Mariners at White Sox
Pick: White Sox -1.5

The White Sox have shown a lot of power in their bats during this series with Seattle. That will give Freddy Garcia some confidence coming off of a pretty lousy performance at Oakland. Meanwhile, the Mariners are sending David Pauley out for his first road start of the year. Not sure how you can keep away from the Pale Hose to cover the run line.
