The real Matt Rivers of OffshoreInsiders has a Saturday winner on the Baltimore Orioles +210 at Kansas City.

Brad Bergesen can be a nightmare unlike Zach Greinke who could be great but the Kansas City Royals are laying $2 plus? Seriously? That alone makes this play a total no-brainer. I understand that the Orioles aren't good and they are at a huge disadvantage with the most important position on the field but once again, the Kansas City Royals are laying $2 plus? Come on.

Greinke will be better than that dreadful last start but the righthander has not been the same guy as last season and is fairly hittable right now. That doesn't mean that the poor Orioles, who just traded away Miggy, will be able to do all that much damage but there is still an upside here with Buck Showalter's soon to be club. Jones, Wieters, Roberts and Markakis are quality big league hitters and scoring some runs is not out of the realm at all.

I don't hate the Royals at all as I like Billy Butler and a few others but Dejesus is done for the season and Podsednik was just traded away so I think that this team is on the way down and headed for a bit of a fall.

KC is still not a bad team to back when getting a price like this but when laying it is an entirely different matter. Bergesen may not be pitching well at all but the righty is still a young guy with some stuff. The upside has not shone through in the slightest and may not today as he could get fully outclassed by the far superior pitcher but the price is just too right to not make a play on this dog.

The pick: Baltimore

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Javier Vazquez (9-7, 4.54 ERA), New York Yankees

Vazquez is going head to head against a pitcher fresh off a no-hitter but you could still make an argument that the Yankee hurler is in a better pitching groove than the Rays Matt Garza.

The former Atlanta Brave is 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA in July. The Yanks are 7-3 in his last 10 starts and the under is also 7-3 over the same stretch.

Tom Gorzelanny (6-5, 3.22 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Not much is going right for the Cubs these days. Gorzelanny, who’s supposed to be a back-of-the-rotation guy, is arguably Chicago’s best starter right now while Carlos Zambrano, who’s supposed to be their ace, is figuring out things in anger management classes.

Gorzelanny owns a 2.82 ERA over his last five appearances and the Cubs are 4-0 in his last four starts.

Slumping

Jeff Suppan (0-6, 6.18 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

The Cards didn’t land Roy Oswalt which means they’re still looking for somebody to mercifully take over Suppan’s spot in the rotation. St. Louis is 2-7 in Suppan’s seven starts since he was rejoined his former team.

Here’s the weird part: the under is 6-1 in those seven games despite Suppan’s 4.50 ERA. Might have something to do with higher totals. Oddsmakers put the total at 12 in Suppan’s last appearance.

Brad Bergesen (3-9, 6.95 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

It’s hard to remember all the promise Bergesen showed in 2009. That’s because there’s been little shine to his performance in 2010.

Newly appointed manager Buck Showalter is scratching his head now trying to figure out how to get Bergesen back on track.

All we can say is good luck, Buck.

The 24-year-old is 0-6 with an 8.92 ERA in his last eight starts.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-113, 8.5)

Let's hope Matt Garza enjoyed his no-hitter in his last outing against the Tigers because he isn't going to throw one tonight against the Yankees.

At least not with Alex Rodriguez, who is batting .467 lifetime against Garza, in the lineup. A-Rod may be having a hard time hitting No. 600 but all his other stats are on the rise.

A-Rod has at 19 RBIs in his last 31 games, leading all of baseball with 38 since June 21. As goes A-Rod so goes the Yankees, who are 22-9 during that span.

"I'm focused on what we keep doing every night - playing good baseball and winning," said Rodriguez, who leads all of baseball with 38 RBIs in his last 31 games.

Starter Javier Vazquez also has heated up with the weather, going 3-0 in his last four outings and allowing only a total of eight earned runs during those 26 innings.

Vazquez hasn't faced the Rays since losing in opening week and Garza has managed to dodge the Yankees all season, but he is 1-3 lifetime against them.

Despite the Rays' recent hot streak, they have only been batting .227 against righties over their last 10. Look for Vazquez to steal Garza's thunder tonight.

Pick: Yankees

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds (-105, 8.5)

Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens is 3-0 since returning from the DL, but he hasn't had to face the Reds, who have a track record of success against the righthander.

Jurrjens is 0-2 lifetime with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against the Reds, who are batting .303 against righties over their last 10, almost 50 points better than the Braves.

Cincinnati counters with righty Bronson Arroyo, who is 5-3 against the Braves and is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Brewers in which he allowed only three hits over eight innings. He threw 66 of his 88 pitches for strikes and threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 27 batters he faced to lose despite a strong performance.

"The end of the game, I play a mental chess match," Arroyo said. "That's how I win ballgames."

This time expect him to check-mate the Braves.

Pick: Reds

Key Stat

34 - Number of homerless plate appearances for New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez entering Friday night's game since he hit career No. 599 more than one week ago. It took A-Rod 28 plate appearances to make the leap from 499 to 500.

Injury That Shouldn't Be Overlooked

The Texas Rangers placed second baseman Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin, the second time that the All-Star has been sidelined. He missed the first 22 games of the season with a high ankle sprain and the Rangers started 10-12 in his absence, but they moved him to the leadoff position and they are 50-30 since. Kinsler is batting .298 with six home runs and 38 RBIs this season and could be a key loss for Texas at a critical time.

Game Of The Day

NY Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-110, 8.5)

Notable Quotable

"I just thought the guy’s got to come back in unbelievable shape, because if he comes back out of shape, looks bad, I mean, he’s just gonna get murdered. If he came back in shape, ready to play football, he’ll be there two days and everyone will forget what happened."
Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said on July 22 of teammate Albert Haynesworth, who held out of voluntary offseason workouts. Haynesworth failed a conditioning test for the second straight day on Friday, preventing him from practicing with the team until he passes the drills.

Tips And Notes

The Oakland Athletics placed closer Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained intercostal muscle. The right-hander has 20 saves and a 1.56 ERA for the Athletics so far this season. The team will likely split the save opportunities between Michael Wuertz (2-2, 5.01), Brad Ziegler (2-4, 3.50) and Craig Breslow (4-2, 2.81), who have combined for only four saves this season.

The San Diego Chargers have become a sexy pick to finally turn the playoff corner this season, but they opened training camp Friday without three Pro-Bowl players, including linebacker Shawne Merriman, who said he will not report until the Chargers can promise him job security. Merriman's name was floated in trade rumors and he has not yet accepted the team's $3.269 million for this season. He joins fellow holdouts Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill.

The Baltimore Ravens are known for their defense, but that well-earned reputation may be in jeopardy this season. The Ravens' already-thin secondary suffered another blow Friday as cornerback Dominique Foxworth tore his ACL and will miss the entire 2010 season. Baltimore is already short on cornerbacks, as Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb are returning from ACL injuries of their own and All-Pro safety Ed Reed may miss the first six weeks of the season as he is on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Play On: N.Y. Yankees w/Vazquez vs Garza Note: The Yankees and Rays meet in Game Two of this three game weekend series in Tampa where Javier Vazquez meets Matt Garza in a matchup of right handers at Tropicana Field. Garza, who enters off a no-hitter in his last start, is 1-7 in his career team starts against the Pinstripes, including 0-6 the last six. With Vazquez 8-1 in his last nine starts in July, including 5-1 away, look for Garza to come back to earth here tonight.

Play Kansas City -1.5

We’ll back the Royals to win this game in a blowout. And we’ve been saying all along that Zach Greinke would “lose it” mentally after pitching his heart out and watching his team waste his good starts with either poor offense or bullpen meltdowns, but this is an excellent spot for Greinke to pick up a rare win here. KC should have no problem scoring against Bergesen, who has a season ERA of 7.89 in his seven road starts.

4* SAN FRANCISCO over L.A. DODGERS

The Giants are simply much better than the Dodgers right now, and while the sting of that major * shift from last night’s 9th inning Run Line reversal will linger for us for a while, we can at least recoup a major part of that in this setting, as one of the hottest teams in the Major Leagues (the San Francisco run is at 18-5) takes on a floundering side that has gone 5-10 since the All Star break, including 1-7 on the road, and only maintaining that weak pace because the pitching staff threw a shutout in four of the wins. One of those shutouts came from Chad Billingsley against these Giants, but instead of a repeat performance today we see a major turnaround.

Because of the suspension to Clayton Kershaw, Billingsley is going on three days rest for the first time in his career, and that issue is magnified in going from a night start on Tuesday to this afternoon affair, making his rest even shorter. A San Francisco offense that leads the N.L. in runs in July was productive on Friday, and gets the third look at Billingsley in less than five weeks, which means some good swings at an arsenal that will not be at 100 percent.

Meanwhile Barry Zito suffered the loss against Billingsley in Los Angeles last week, but performed well, holding the game at 1-0 into the 8th inning. Zito has come out with a sharp 2.08 in three starts since the All Star break, with his command showing in a sharp ratio of 17 K’s vs. only six W’s, and for the full season it has been a 6-2/2.65 from this mound. The Dodgers do not bring much right-handed punch to the park without Manny Ramirez, scoring just 12 runs in six games vs. left-handed starters since the All Star break, and the momentum for each of these teams continues in the same direction this afternoon.

SPORTS WAGERS ( RANDALL THE HANDAL )

Detroit +1.74 over BOSTON Pinnacle

It didn’t seem possible that the banged up Tigers could go into Boston yesterday and beat Jon Lester with Armando Galarraga going but they did and today they get a much more favorable matchup. Max Scherzer is developing into a true ace. This guy has wicked stuff and he just keeps getting better. He was sent down to the minors back in early May to work on his delivery and in his first start back he fanned a cool 14 and has barely slowed down since. In that no-hitter game against Matt Garza last week, Scherzer, too, had a no-no going into the sixth. In 32 July innings, Scherzer has allowed 20 hits for a BAA of .175 to go along with an ERA of 2.48. This guy can pitch, period. Daisuke Matsuzaka is coming off back-to-back strong games but they came in Seattle and Oakland. Fact is, Dice K is not to be trusted laying big juice. He’s a serious roll of the dice because he is capable of walking way too many people. Every time you think Dice has turned the corner he throws a complete disaster. We're three years into this experiment and his skills keep getting worse. Does this look like an ace to you? Big overlay. Play: Detroit +1.74 (Risking 2 units).

Florida +1.07 over SAN DIEGO Pinnacle

This one is all about wagering on Ricky Nolasco against Kevin Correia. Nolasco has been one of the best pitchers in the game in July and that is right in line with his incredibly terrific second half a year ago. Nolasco’s ERA in 2009 and the first half of 2010 weren’t great, but that was due to various factors and as a result we get an undervalued pitcher here. Fact is, he’s done much better in his five second-half starts. Combine that with impeccable control and it’s clear why his xERA is so low. In 33 July innings, Nolasco has fanned 40 batters while walking just eight. He has a .216 BAA over that span and current Padre hitters have had very little success against him. The Marlins are really playing good ball and took the opener last night in a matchup that was far less favorable than this one. Kevin Correia is usually good for giving up four or five a game. Pitching at least half his games at Petco, Correia has a BAA of .272 and an ERA of 4.52. Those are Great American Ballpark numbers and frankly, there’s nothing to like about Correia as a favorite over Nolasco. Play: Florida +1.07 (Risking 2 units).

HOUSTON –1½ +1.86 over Milwaukee Pinnacle

You could definitely lay the –1.11 and feel very confident but we’ll go for the gold and lay the runs. You see, everything about Wandy Rodriguez is screaming to “buy” now. He’s been trending in the right direction for weeks and has really hit his stride with five outstanding starts in his last six. Among those were a seven-inning, one-hit gem against the Reds, a six-inning, zero earned runs against San Fran and a seven-inning, seven-hit, one run gem against these same Brewers in Milwaukee. Now the scene switches to Houston, where Rodriguez has always been better. Furthermore, Milwaukee has lost 15 of Dave Bush’s last 22 starts and it’s also worth mentioning that Houston is on a three-game winning streak while the Crew have dropped three straight. Dave Bush is hit and miss. He will never dominate in the fashion that Rodriguez is capable of but will often keep his team in the game. However, that’s a roll of the dice every time and even in his win last week in against the Nats, he still gave up three jacks. It might appear that the Astros are cleaning house when in fact they’re not. This is a team with a lot of young talent, that can’t wait to get back to the park, as they’re all starting to thrive. Play: Houston –1½ +1.86 (Risking 2 units).

Pittsburgh +1.82 over ST. LOUIS Pinnacle

Jeff Suppan a –1.94 favorite is about as ridiculous as it gets. Here’s a guy that has nothing left. He’s batting practice out there. Over his last three starts covering 16 innings, Suppan has struck out two batters and they were both pitchers. In those 16 July innings, he’s also allowed four bombs, walked seven and allowed 22 hits. In 67 IP this season he’s allowed 99 hits for a BAA of .359 to go along with an alarming 1.88 WHIP. Jeff Suppan is the worst starter in the majors and now he’s a 2-1 favorite? Are you kidding? Also, Tony LaRussa is the most overrated manager in baseball history and it’s not close. He actually believes in his own screwed up brain that batting the pitcher eighth is working. It’s not only that though. He makes so many bad moves it’s incredible but they go virtually unnoticed by most because he’s been around so long and has had success. The only reason he’s had success is because he has surrounded himself with great assistants and bench coaches and they do everything form him but it’s perceived that LaRussa is doing it. Personally, I have no confidence when I wager on the Cards because LaRussa makes two stupid moves (or more) every game and costs his team more wins than any manager in the business. The Pirates do not have a strong starter on its whole staff so there is no point getting into Daniel McCutchen’s numbers. He could give up five or more without breaking a sweat. Thing is, McCutchen is not the one laying close to 2-1 and the Pirates are playing decent ball these days. They have a great chance to score a bunch and when a stiff like Suppan is favored by this much, the pooch is the play with no questions asked because Suppan’s chances of losing are far greater than his chances of winning. Play: Pittsburgh +1.84 (Risking 2 units).

Florida Marlins (52-51) at San Diego Padres (60-41)
(R) Ricky Nolasco (11-7) vs. (R) Kevin Correia (7-6)

The Florida Marlins have lost five of six home games to the Padres this season, but are 6-1 in their last seven games versus the Padres in San Diego, including Friday’s 4-2 victory. Look for the Marlins with Ricky Nolasco on the hill to continue whipping the Padres in their house and seize their sixth straight victory over the Padres at Petco Park. The Marlins are 6-1 in Nolasco’s last 7 starts, 4-0 in his last 4 on the road.

Florida’s right-hander Ricky Nolasco (11-7, 4.35 ERA), is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in his last three starts. Nolasco is 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in six career outings, including five starts against the Padres.

San Diego’s right-hander Kevin Correia (7-6, 5.09 ERA), is 2-0 with a 5.29 ERA in his last three starts. Correia is 2-2 with a 6.94 ERA in 12 career appearances, including five starts against the Marlins.

Cincinnati (-105) for 2 Units

The Reds have won their last 4 in game 2 of a series and won 9 of their last 12 on Saturday; today, we'll look for Bronson Arroyo to come through with a solid performance; after all, he has held opponents to a .190 average in the month of July with a respectable 3.38 ERA. And his ERA in daytime play is a decent 3.37. On the other hand, Jair Jurrjens has experienced trouble in daytime action (7.27 ERA) and the road has not been kind to him with a 7.88 ERA. Furthermore, the Great American Ball Park has been his nemesis with a 9.95 ERA there in 2 starts. And throw in the fact that the Braves are just 1-4 with him on the mound on Saturdays, we'll look for the Reds to deliver here.

3 Units Minnesota -110

This is a great chance to use some more advanced thinking when handicapping baseball. One of the best pitchers in baseball, Felix Hernandez, takes the month for Seattle, so the first thought is to back him or not bet on the game at all from a side perspective. However, baseball is all about momentum because of the length of the season and amount of games during the week. The Twins are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now, winning six games in a row and eight of their last ten games. Hernandez rarely has a bad outing, but some of the Twins best hitters have had tremendous success against him. Minnesota starter Kevin Slowey was going through a rough stretch, but he has quietly turned things around recently with two good starts. He has also pitched well against Seattle this season. The Mariners are a complete mess right now with nothing to play for, while Minnesota has all of the momentum. Look for the Twins to get the win.

3 Units LA Angels -145

Rich Harden returns to the Texas pitching rotation tonight after being in the minor leagues. He really didn't do very well, except for his last start, and I don't think he's a quality pitcher anymore, especially for the American League. He pitched fairly well for Chicago but hasn't panned out for Texas. They are giving him another try tonight though. Angels starter Dan Haren will be anxious to put his last start behind him where he got hit in the arm by a hit. The doctors have cleared him to play, so I expect him to do well. He's used to pitching in the American League and showed good stuff in his last start, despite giving up more hits than I'd like to see. However, he did strikeout 8 batters over just 4.2 innings. The Angels want this series bad after getting embarrassed in Texas just a few days ago. They won last night, and I expect them to win tonight against a Rangers team that is just 24-22 away from home. They also don't have much experience against Haren either. Look for the Angels to get the win.

Florida Marlins vs. San Diego Padres
Play: Florida Marlins

The Florida Marlins have dominated the Padres on the West Coast going 6-1 their last seven trips to San Diego. The Marlins will send Ricky Nolasco to the bump knowing he is 8-2 on the highway this season with an ERA of 3.92 over that span. Ricky Nolasco is 11-4 in road games when playing against a team with a win percentage of 54 to 62 percent the last 3 seasons, 12-5 in road games versus teams averaging 2.75 or less extra base hits per game the last 2 seasons, 13-2 in road games versus teams averaging 0.9 or less homeruns per game the last 3 seasons, 9-1 in road games against NL West opponents the last 3 seasons and 8-0 in road games versus teams averaging 0.9 or less homeruns per game in the second half of the season the last 3 seasons. The Padres will send Kevin Correia to the hill with his 4-4 home record and ERA of 4.52 on the season. We will back the visitor here as a small underdog as the Marlins ride Nolasco to another victory on the West Coast on Saturday.

Orioles vs. Royals
Play: Over 8

It has been a rough few starts for Kansas City’s Zack Greinke as he makes his fourth straight start at home against the Orioles on Saturday night. His last time out, he gave up eight runs and eight hits in four innings of work against the Twins. Overall, he's 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in his last three starts giving up 15 runs and 18 hits in his last 18 innings pitched. The righty took a no-decision against the Orioles back in May as Nick Markakis (4-13), Julio Lugo (5-12), Brian Roberts (5-10), Adam Jones (3-8), and Luke Scott (2-4) all hit Greinke well. Greinke is backed by a Kansas City bullpen that has an ERA close to 5.00 at home. Baltimore’s Brad Bergesen continues to make starts despite being pretty bad this season. The righty is 3-9 with a 7.12 ERA in 16 starts. He's only averaging 5.3 innings per outing meaning a Baltimore bullpen that is already taxed should be involved tonight. The righty has given up 17 runs and 28 hits in his last 16.3 innings pitched. Bergesen lost to the Royals in Baltimore back in May after giving up four runs and 10 hits in 6.7 innings of work. Yuniesky Betancourt (3-9), Billy Butler (3-8), Jose Guillen (1-3), Chris Getz (1-3), and Alex Gordon (1-1) have good numbers against the Orioles starter. The Royals have gone Over the total in six straight games mostly due to bad pitching. The Orioles bullpen has an ERA near 4.40 on the road which has helped them go Over the total in five of their last six games. We expect another high-scoring game between the Orioles and Royals tonight.

Dodgers at Giants
Pick: Giants -110

Dodgers come in losers of three in a row while the Giants are 7-2 in their last nine games, but the real reason I am taking the Giants here is that Barry Zito deserved a lot better than he got in his last start, as he made just two mistakes the whole night, and it cost him three runs, and after that the usually reliable Giant bullpen could not hold down the fort enough for the offense to come all the way back. Things even out in a baseball season, and see Barry get the better end of things here tonite.

20 DIME - HOUSTON ASTROS

In Wandy Rodriguez I trust.

After a rough start to the season – he was 3-10 with a 6.09 ERA as of June 18, Rodriquez has turned his season around in a big way, posting a 5-1 record and a 2.31 ERA in his last six trips to the mound. And if you eliminate a five-run, six-inning performance against the Cubs at Wrigley Field – he won that game 11-5 after Houston staked him to an 8-0 run lead in the third inning, giving Rodriguez the green light to serve up fastball after fastball – he surrendered just five runs in his other five starts covering 33 innings (1.36 ERA).

Rodriguez is coming off a dominating 4-0 home victory over the Reds – and when I say dominating, I mean Cincinnati managed just one run and two walks while striking out seven times in seven innings. In fact, the southpaw’s strikeout-to-walk ratio during his 5-1 run is 34-9!

Rodriguez is just 6-6 with a 4.48 ERA in his career against Milwaukee (16 games, 15 starts), but those numbers are pretty misleading. For one thing, he schooled the Brew Crew in Wisconsin back on June 30, rolling to a 5-1 win after yielding just a run and seven hits in seven innings. For another thing, he’s been lights out against the Brewers in Houston the last few years, giving up just two runs in 19 innings in three starts.

As much as I trust Houston’s starting pitcher in this contest, I do not trust Milwaukee’s Dave Bush. He’s been walking a tightrope all season. As a matter of fact, he’s lucky that he’s ONLY just 5-8 with a 4.27 ERA on the season, as he’s got a 1.51 WHIP and his batting average-against is .285 (meaning he’s not missing many bats).

Finally, the Astros are swinging the better sticks, batting .275 over its previous 10 games (including .288 against right-handed pitchers), while the Brewers are hitting just .246 over a 10-game stretch (.222 vs. lefties). Also, Milwaukee had dropped three straight and is just 2-7 in its last nine games against left-handed starters, while Houston has won three in row and four of five.
