4* MEMPHIS over MISSISSIPPI STATE

We will be a little more long-winded than usual here, but it helps to detail some key concepts about early-season handicapping, both from a Play On and Play Against standpoint. So let’s get to it.

Memphis has a chance to be vastly improved in a subtle way, and one that the markets are missing in this projection – the talent on hand is not all that bad from a program that went bowling after both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, but it was a case of Tommy West and his coaching staff literally losing the Tigers LY. When it became a foregone conclusion that the staff would be gone we saw little spirit or effort, and the result was a dismal 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS slide down the stretch. It is that “spirit” aspect that we have detected such a major change in over the off-season. While the jury may be out on the tactical acumen of new head coach Larry Porter, who was a star RB for this program back in the early 90’s (2,194 career rushing yards), he was an outstanding recruiter at L.S.U. in his five years as an assistant, and there are no questions about his ability to bring enthusiasm to the table. We can use the words of starting LB Jamon Hughes to set the tone - ”Everybody’s mind-set is better. Last year there were a lot of players whose heads may have been in the game, but their hearts weren’t in the game. This year everybody’s heart is in the game.”

Of particular note from an attitude standpoint is the defense, which stopped competing in the middle of LY. Now former Southern Miss DC Jay Hopson has come on board, and from an energy standpoint there will be an immediate change. This, from starting FS Marcus Ball - "Coach Hop has had a huge influence. He's probably one of the smartest guys in the building. He's pure football. He's one of the first ones here and usually the last one to leave. He makes you figure out if you're out here for the love of the game or just to be part of the show. One thing he always tells us is you're fighting for your brother next to you. We always break the huddle by shouting '11 brothers.' We're 11 brothers, and you'd do anything for your brother."

So Memphis will be better, largely because Memphis will be trying. With a veteran OL (all starters back) making life easier for new starting QB Cannon Smith, there is also the ability to make plays. Smith will turn 23 in October, a rare level of maturity for a SO, and having transferred back to his home town after a stint at Miami F., he brings confidence and legit talent to that position. And while the Tigers are still nothing special overall, in this pointspread range it is all about effort and enthusiasm, which they will bring. Porter is from Jackson, and Hopson played his college ball at Ole Miss, which means that the trip to Starkville can get their blood flowing.

We say that because it will not take all that much more than simply playing hard to stay inside this number. While the first game for the new staff at Memphis brings a major focus, for State it is an entirely different setting. Dan Mullen faces a huge S.E.C. home showdown vs. Auburn in front of the ESPN cameras on Thursday night, before going to L.S.U. the following week, and then hosting Georgia. As such, his focus is to simply get through this one as quickly as possible, with no interest in getting a scoreboard margin, as he hopes to avoid injury to any key personnel.

But could they even get a margin anyway? While Mullen brought some new life to the Bulldogs LY, the talent stock is nothing special, particularly having to replace Anthony Dixon at RB, and the red-shirt SR’s have never been favored in this range in their careers, going 0-3 ATS the only times that the line reached double figures. This is an offense that lacks quick-strike ability, which makes it difficult to build an early margin, and his intentions late are to merely work the clock and get his players to bed. That makes this far too high of a pointspread, with the talent gap not as wide as the market perceptions, and the favorite bringing no intent to go for the jugular.

MICHIGAN STATE (-22) vs. Western Michigan—Kirk Cousins (19 TDs vs. 9 ints. LY) gives Spartans a big QB edge over Western soph Alex Carder (only 27 YP in 2009)...

WASHINGTON (+3) at Byu—Time for Jake Locker to live up to his billing and to atone for his costly celebration penalty in 2008 meeting; BYU to use both jr. Riley Nelson & freshman Jake Heaps at QB...

CLEMSON (-24) vs. North Texas—Tigers happy to have highly-regarded baseball prospect Kyle Parker back at QB; speedy Clemson defense should stifle Mean Green, who have been outscored 284-33 while picking up paychecks visiting five “power foes” the L3Ys.

Lenny Del Genio’s 25* CFB Non-Conf Blowout of the YEAR **EARLY**
Play on Michigan State at 12:00 ET. These teams met last year here in East Lansing with Sparty obviously emerging victorious in an easy 49-14 win and cover as 20-point chalk. Shortly thereafter things kind of fell apart for HC Mark Dantonio in his third season at the helm of the Michigan State program as his team seemingly quit in a season ending 42-14 home loss to Penn State, which was then followed by an ugly dormitory incident resulting in the suspension of numerous Spartan Wr's and DB's for the Alamo Bowl game vs. Texas Tech (L 41-31, +7). The fact that they stayed within 10 of the high-powered Red Raiders is pretty impressive when you consider it was a de facto road game for MSU. Despite the 6-7 SU finish to the season, there were plenty of positives to take away. It was just the third time in school history that they've made three straight bowl games + the D got a huge break when star MLB Greg Jones decided to return for his senior season. Yes, the Spartans finished 112th in the country against the pass last season, but for this season opener they should be okay facing a 1st time starter in sophomore Alex Carder, who threw just seven passes in 2009 and has big shoes to fill with the departure of Tim Hiller, who left as the school's all-time leading passer. Making life more difficult for Carder is the fact that the Broncos' offense also loses 1000 yd RB Brandon West as well as LY's top two receivers. WMU has been a notoriously bad team in season openers, going 0-4 SU/ATS in the Bill Cubit era and missing the spread by a combined 46.5 points in those contests. Road openers have been a particularly sore spot for the Broncos as they've lost their first road game of the season 15 years in a row (all vs. BCS opp) and done so by an average of 24 PPG. Last year, they were dominated 31-7 by a Michigan team that we quickly found out wasn't very good. In fact, that same Wolverines team would go on to lose to the Spartans just three weeks later. LY vs. Michigan State, a much more seasoned WMU squad found itself down 35-0 at the half and allowed 30 first downs and 600+ yards of total offense. On the defensive side of the ball this year, the Broncos are installing some new schemes and are inexperienced up front, a bad combination for an early season non-conference opponent like this. Returning for the Spartans at QB is junior Kirk Cousins and he'll be aided by a deep RB corps that was bolstered by some highly touted freshman recruits. Cousins completed 28 of 35 passes in LY's meeting and guided the offense to its best day of the year, over 100 yards better than any other game output. The situation is even more ideal for the Spartans this year as this is their first of six consecutive games played in the state of Michigan. Unlike last year, when they had two crucial conference games on deck, they have nothing to look forward to here as they play Fla Atlantic in Detroit next Saturday. Western Michigan is 0-6 ATS L6 games with a total of 49.5 to 56. Look for a big win from Sparty here. Michigan State is our 25* Non-Conference Blowout of the Year.

Saturday's Winners
30 Dime Play on Missouri minus the points versus Illinois in a game being played in St. Louis. As I release this selecteon at 2:00 PM Eastern on Friday, the Tigers are a -12 point favorite in Vegas and offshore.

15 Dime Play on Kansas State minus the points versus UCLA. The Wildcats Gophers are a currently a -1 1/2 to -2 point home favoriste at most places in Vegas and offshore. If this line happens to go up to Shop around because that line is as high as -2 1/2 as well at a few places. If this line happens to go to -3 1/2, absolutely buy down the 1/2 point as insurance on K-State.

10 Dime Play on Cincinnati as the road dog at Fresno State. The Bearcats are currenlly getting +2 1/2 points in this contest.

This line has been all over the place since it came out a month ago. It opened at 12. Went up to 14 and now is back at 12 as of posting. It might go up some more but I like it up to 13.5. The reasons it might go up is twofold but lets discuss the main one. Illinois will be using wide receivers to play in their secondary!!! They have been smashed with injurees back there and they have no other choice. If this was a few games into the season I think I would have my first ever 5 star release, but since it is the first we will be a little conservative to start out.. The new DC for Illinois faced Gabbert, the Mizzu QB last year and gave up a ton of yardage and 3 tds and that was with a HEALTHY SECONDARY!! Pinkel is not one to feel sorry for the opposition coach either and it's a tough start for hot seater Ron Zook, but we're not interested in feeling sorry with. Just cashing.

Can it get any easier than this? Yeah see above but not by much. The line has moved from UCLA being a 2. 5 favorite to it's current K St being favored. Why the big move? Well Vegas puts these lines up a month in advance and a lot can happen from the time they do to now. What happened? The entire offensive line for the Bruins has been obliterasted between injuries and suspensions. I don't think you want to go up agains Bill Snyder with such an exposed weakness. The O-Line is the most important thing to look at when handicapping early games of the college season. I was the main reason we hit our first play of the year. Iowa St. was simply better up front than N. ILL. Lay the points and remember if the line somehow goes to 3.5 in favor of KST then always buy the hook down!!!! That my friends will remain a constant through out the season. NEVER GET BEAT BY THE HOOK!!!

I think Vegas is trying to pull a fast one here! Do you think that just because Brian Kelly is gone that he took everything with him?? Not the case at all. He left the best part. his QB Collarus. this kid is a gamer like none other. n fact he has never lost a game that he has been the starter in since HS! He will be there along with a still very potent offense for the Bearcats and they will be going against a deflnse that has not improved over last year's non existence and they don't have the explosive Ryan Mathews to turn around and hand it anymore either.

EASTERN MICHIGAN +9½ over Army

No, this isn’t going to be the prettiest game to watch this weekend but it surely is one of Week 1’s best bets. The Army Black Knights have been one of the worst Division 1 teams for the better part of the last decade and have, to the best of my knowledge, never been this close to being a double-digit road favorite to start the season. This is a team that has won a total of two road games over the last four years and while Eastern Michigan isn’t going to do anything this year, the mere fact that you have to lay 9½-points on the road with the Black Knights is absurd. At best, if you like Army in this game you wait and see what they do in this spot but any smart handicapper will tell you it’s foolish to lay points with a team that hasn’t been in this position in forever, let alone on the road. The second angle to watch for is the “revenge” factor that readers of this space last year know plays a big part in the college game. Army did indeed beat Eastern Michigan last year and don’t think that the players aren’t aware of that. This isn’t a rivalry game by any stretch but when Army comes into the Eagles stadium for the second year in a row the coaching staff and players have a sense of urgency that doesn’t exist with any other opponent. We could get into the X and O’s of today’s matchup but frankly this is much more of a “situational” play than anything else. Experienced college bettors know never to lay large lumber to inexperienced, run first teams on the road. It’s an easy way to lose money quickly and one of the biggest traps inexperienced college bettors fall into every year. Play: #184 Eastern Michigan 9½ (Risking 2.2 units to win 2).

Purdue +10½ over NOTRE DAME

One of the things to consider when looking for a live dog in week one is playing against teams that are overhyped to begin the year and the Irish absolutely fit the bill. Notre Dame is overhyped because of a new coach named Brian Kelly that stepped in and is brimming with confidence, as he hypes his team. Kelly is thriving in the spotlight and in fact, some reports say that he’s had over 140 press interviews since May. Notre Dame is a serious college football program but they’ve been idling in mediocrity for years and Kelly’s blueprint for success is not a five-year plan but rather a five-minute plan. Kelly also made a two-minute music video called “We are ND”. He had talks with NBC about the pace of his “no huddle offense”, as the network was worried about getting in all of its commercials. Fact is, you can’t turn cat food into caviar overnight and the Irish simply aren’t that good. They’ll start a sophomore QB that has no big games in his career and that has thrown 20 career passes. Outside of star receiver Michael Floyd, the offense really doesn’t have much else. The defense has another new coordinator; its third in the last three years and this is a defense that allowed 400 yards per game last season. The Irish return nine defensive starters so they’ll likely be better but certainly not 10½ points better than the Boilermakers. Purdue is dangerous. They started out 1-5 last year before winning four of its last six games. Watch out for QB Robert Mavre, a junior transfer from Miami, who sat out last season with a knee injury but is fully recovered this year and ready to go. The kid is wickedly talented and confident and has a lot of weapons to go to. Purdue has 17 seniors and no matter how you break this one down the Boilermakers are not 10½-points worse than the Irish. Incidentally, the Irish have won six straight season openers and while this is a tough one, it’s still a South Bend rivalry that second-year coach Danny Hope will have his squad ready for. Play: #163 Purdue +10½ (Risking 2.18 units to win 2).

Kansas St. -1.5

With UCLA's starting QB out or playing at 60% at best with a back injury, and the Bruins figured to finish eighth in the PAC 10, I like the set up here. K State is still in revenge mode after a beating a they took on the road last year to the Bruins. Also UCLA camp reports are not good, injuries to an already depleted OL, and a whole new offense that has not looked good in scrimmage, from my sportswriter source in LA. K State will pound the rock with RB Thomas who was held to 54 yards last year in LA, but managed to run all over everyone else last season for over 1200 yards. An ex-QB, he also is on the radar of NFL teams at over 6 foot and 230 pounds with blazing speed. K State at home avenges a 23-9 loss last year. Play 1 Unit on Kansas St.

Northwestern -4.5

The fact Vandys passing game is weak at best, and throw in the fact their top 2 running backs are out and Northwestern looks like the play over the fall number here. The hung tough in last years bowl game losing to Auburn in a shootout by 3 points, but this SEC foe for the opener on the road is better suited to beat. The Dores also have lost 8 straight at home to Division I teams! With the entire OL back for NW, and their all world dual threat QB Persa back with weapons, I do not see Vandy trading punches in this one, even at home. NW is 8-1 ATS their last 8 road games and figure to move the chains in this one enough to squeak out a 7-10 point win. Vandy not the type of team who can play from behind and RB Norman for Vandy iffy at best for this game after tearing a MCL and getting scoped 3 weeks ago. Play 1 Unit on NW.

Cincinnati +2.5

Not the Pat Hill team of old at Fresno State. Not even close. The once vaunted defenses are no more. Cincy without coach Kelly, but return a ton of explosive players on offense, and work out of fall camp is that QB Zach Collaros who started numerous games last year after QB Pike went down, is as sharp as ever, He is a serious dual threat QB and is backed up by a decent WR unit and solid RB in Pead as well. With a defense that ranked 98th overall last year and worse than that against the run, against the open spread attack, I doubt Fresno can trade punches all night long in this one against a team under the radar screen here. While Cincys defense is not stellar, their offense still is and they have the best talent on this field as an underdog against a Fresno team that is middle of the pack in the WAC. I will grab the points and expect a 3-6 point Cincy outright win. Play 1 Unit on Cincy.

2* ILL +12.5 vs MIZZOU

First things first: I hate Illinois football. I've always been an orange and blue basketball fan so go figure when I was an undergrad in Champaign, the hoops were going through their hangover period after Dee Brown, Deron Williams and Luther Head left the program. Oh, and the Illini went to the Rose Bowl -- which I still believe to this day was a FLUKE . . . Anyways, Illinois football returned to trash the past couple years with the lackluster play of Juice Williams, who peaked as a sophomore and never got better after leading the troops to Pasadena. The offensive line was hit or miss, the defense couldn't stay healthy and the quarterback position was a revolving door -- giving the entire team ZERO confidence. Illinois was destroyed in last year's opener by Mizzou 37-9 (I was all over the Tigers) and finished their season 3-7 all while filling my pockets with cabbage along the way.

But what a difference a year can make. We'll get to the revenge factor in just a second, but Illinois has improved by leaps and bounds. Are they ready to contend with the big boys in the Big Ten? Hell. No. They are, however, much stronger on the defensive side of the ball with the ENTIRE D-line back and all-conference linebacker Martez Wilson finally healthy. Offensively, they return both tailbacks, a WHALE of an offensive line (they average 6-5, 315) and incredibly quick wide receivers Jarred Fayson the Florida transfer and A.J. Jenkins. Redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase is the only question mark in my eyes, but we saw what new Illini OC Bobby Petrino did with Ryan Mallett in Arkansas and knowing how QUICK Scheelhaase is and how well he can throw on the move PLUS the reports from Camp Rantoul raving about how confident he is -- I'll roll the dice.

R-E-V-E-N-G-E: Revenge is like biting a dog because the dog bit you. Well, the Illini are sick and tired of being pummeled, or bit, by Mizzou. The Tigers have RAN this rivalry the past four seasons and the many seniors on Illinois have made it known that this is a statement game. It all sounds good on paper, yes, but from what I've heard from players on the team: THIS is the game that has been circled since spring ball. Not Ohio State. Not Penn State. Not Northwestern. This team WANTS Mizzou in what will be the last installment in the Arch Rivalry.

Line related notions showcase extreme reverse line movement. The public is HAMMERING Mizzou, yet after opening up at 13.5, I'm seeing 12 at some shops. The spread crossing through a KEY NUMBER and holding tight with all the cash coming in on the Tigers speaks volumes to me. Mizzou has a great quarterback in Blaine Gabbert, but his go-to guy and tailback Darius Washington is suspended and the Tigers lost the unquestioned leader of their defense, Sean Witherspoon. All signs point to a game decided by less than a touchdown. Neutral game site, split crowd and an incredible desire to finally crack Mizzou between the eyes has me siding with the Illini plus the points. Hail to the Orange.

4 Units Tulsa -8.5

Analysis: Tulsa should have a much more potent offense this season, returning four starters on the offensive line, but more importantly their starting quarterback G.J. Kinne. Overall the Golden Hurricane return nine out of eleven starters on offense as well. Homefield hasn’t really mattered in this series either, with the road team covering the last three times these teams have played. This game should be a big statement game for the Tulsa program overall. They had a very disappointing season last year, going 5-7, including a six game losing streak, before ending the year with an overtime win over Memphis. However, that stretch included games against the best conference teams one after another when they weren’t’ playing well. However, the defense returns three out of four starters on the defensive line, so both the offense and defense looks more stable than last year. Meanwhile, this season looks to be a down year for East Carolina. They hired Ruffin McNeil to replace Skip Holtz as the head coach, but McNeil has no head coaching experience and his defense wasn’t particularly dominant at Texas Tech. He only returns six starters overall and is also trying to install a Texas Tech style spread offense. The Golden Hurricane were embarrassed by the Pirates last year at home, losing 44-17, so there is added motivation for them in this game to avenge the blowout loss. East Carolina’s team has hardly any returning starters, a new coach with a new offensive and defensive scheme, and facing a team returning several starters with a big revenge factor. The Pirates don’t have a dominant home field advantage, so I think Tulsa won’t be affected by playing on the road in this game, especially with it being the first game of the year. Look for Tulsa to avenge last year’s disappointing season with a big road win here.

Both teams come into this game red hot, but the Dbacks did win yesterday, have the pitching edge, and are host, with the latter being especially importatant due to the Home/Away dichotomy of these two teams. Note also that Bud Norris has a 5.11 Road ERA this season and has lasted just six innings in two career starts against the Snakes, allowing 12 runs in that span. On the other hand Saunders comes in after one of his better outings of the season as he allowed just two earned runs in eight innings, and he also has the edge of having never faced the Astros.

“1 UNIT” COLLEGE INTANGIBLE (Missouri -12 at home versus Illinois in a 12:30 eastern kickoff broadcast nationally on FOX-NET): There are rumors flying that this interstate rivalry has taken on a new dimension with resentment growing on the Missouri side. During a conference “rearrangement” period earlier this year Missouri had interest of joining the Big-10 league, but it was Illinois who actually lobbied AGAINST the addition as they did not want another Big-10 squad competing against them for recruits in the same geographical area. To make a long story short the Big-10 ended up taking Nebraska instead of Missouri which gives the Tigers some added motivation in this particular encounter. It certainly will be an adverse atmosphere for Illinois “redshirt freshman” Nathan Scheelhaase to make his quarterback debut and it also worth noting that the Illini are now operating under a brand new offensive coordinator as well. Last year was a horrible campaign for the Illinois defensive secondary which ranked way down at #103 nationally in pass efficiency defense and only picked off 5 passes. Going into today’s opener Illinois once again has issues in their defensive backfield as a pair of projected starters in S Supo Sanni (achillies) and CB Terry Hawthorne (foot) are OUT with injuries. Against Division I-A competition a year ago the Illini defense was roasted to the tune of a 31 points per game average and things are not looking bright for the stop unit again as we embark on 2010. I will admit that Missouri’s top rusher of a year ago has been dismissed following assault charges, but the Tigers just received excellent news regarding a starting wide receiver. It was thought that Jerrell Jackson was going to miss 2 weeks with a wrist fracture, but the wideout has been CLEARED to play this afternoon and will be in the starting lineup. Today marks the only tough opponent that Missouri will face this month and they will have full focus with “only” McNeese State waiting for them on deck. My database research indicates that Missouri is an excellent 8-1 ATS/ROAD in the initial two weeks of a brand new campaign. Today’s game will be played INDOORS at the facility which hosts the NFL St. Louis Rams. Dating all the way back to the 1992 campaign Illinois just happens to be a horrible 3-12 ATS in “Dome” affairs. Here is a whopping 25-6 SYSTEM (80% past decade) which plays AGAINST poor defensive teams like Illinois that allowed on average at least 400 yards per contest and returning less than 6 offensive starters, going up against an opponent that returns at least 8 starters on defense. That 80% system favors Missouri early this afternoon in a game that can be viewed nationally on Fox-Net

Jeff Benton Saturday's 25 Dime Trifecta ...
25 DIME selection on NOTRE DAME minus the points in a season-opening contest against Purdue. At the time I publish this release, the Irish are a home favorite with the line fluctuating between 10½ and 11. Shop around do your best to grab that 10½, and if you do, go ahead and invest in the half-point to take the number to -10. If the best number you can get is -11, there is no need to buy off that number.

25 DIME selecetion on NORTHWESTERN minus the points in a season-opening contest at Vanderbilt. At the time I publish this release, the Wildcats are a road favorite of 3½ to 4 points. Do whatever you have to in order to get that 3½, then invest in the half-point to take the number from -3½ to -3, which is obviously a crucial number in football.

25 DIME selection on the BOSTON RED SOX over the White Sox in GAME 1 of a doubleheader from Fenway Park. At the time I pubrlish this release, Boston is ranging from a -135 to -140 favorite both here in Vegas and offshore. You must list Clay Buchholz as the Red Sox starting pitcher. If Buchholz doesn’t take the mound, this play is null and void.

Notre Dame

The college football world is about to find out the answer to a classic chicken-and-egg-like question with respect to Notre Dame: Was the problem the players, or was the problem Charlie Weis? Clearly, as evidenced by this play, I believe it was the latter.

From the get go, Weis was in way over his head as a college football ringleader, especially when it came to guiding one of the most prestigaous programs in the sport’s history. Every spring you’d hear about Weis’ Top 10 recruiting classes, and then ever fall those quality players would fail to live up to expectations. Now the Irish have a real coach in Brian Kelly, who resurrected programs at his last two stops, most recently putting Cincinnati on the national map (under Kelly, the Bearcats won back-to-back Big East titles and with it snared consecutive BCS Bowl berths).

It’s obviously going to take time for Kelly’s intricate spread-option offense to take hold in South Bend, and he is behind the 8-ball in that the team’s top two offensive threats – QB Jimmy Clausen and WR Golden Tate – bolted for the NFL. But junior Dayne Crist has the makeup of the kind of QB who can succeed in Kelly’s offense, and remember that last year both of Kelly’s QBs at Cincinnati – tall, drop-back passer Tony Pike and the more mobile Zach Collaros – put up big numbers in different ways for the Bearcats.

And while Tate is gone, speedy wideout Michael Floyd (100-plus yards receiving in five of his last six games) is back, as are the team’s two leading rushers. More than anything, though, Notre Dame must improve on the other side of the ball (it gave up 397.8 total yards per game last year, including 170.3 rushing ypg, which ranked 86th and 89th, respectively). The good news is eight of 12 defensive starters are back, mostly in the front seven.

The better news: Purdue’s defense was even worse than Notre Dame’s last year, yielding 29.1 points per game and 173.4 rushing ypg. The one thing the Boiler’s did well last year on defense was stop the pass, but they lost all four defensive backs. They also lost prolific QB Joey Elliott (3,000 yards passing, 23 TDs). That’s a 1-2 punch to the gut for a squad coming off consecutive losing seasons.

The last two times Purdue paid a visit to South Bend, it got waxed 35-21 in 2006 and 38-21 in 2008. In fact, the Irish have taken four of the last five meetings, including three double-digit wins. Last year Notre Dame was up 17-7 but the defense fell apart and Clausen needed a fourth-quarter rally to win 24-21. With the defense presuemably improved and Kelly pushing the right buttons on offense, the Irish won’t need any comeback effort today. They’ll lead comfortably wire to wire.

One last thing: If Kelly gets the chance to make a statement by running up the score, he’ll do it – especially since this will likely be the only opportunity to do so until mid-October, as the Notre Dame’s next five games are against Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford, Boston College and Pitt.

Northwestern

Love what Northwestern alum Pat Fitzgerald has done since taking over the Wildcats. After a 6-6 inaugural campaign in 2007, Fitzgerald has led Northwestern to back-to-back winning seasons (9-4 and 8-5) and two premier bowl games, including a New Year’s Day contest last year.

Yes, Northwestern came up just short in those two bowl games, losing in overtime to both Missouri and Auburn, but clearly this is a program on the upswing, and the young coach deserves the bulk of the credit. On the flip side, Vanderbilt is a program in flux. After going 7-6 and winning their first bowl game in more than half a century in 2008, the Commodores – despite returning 18 starters – fell on their face last year, going 2-10.

One of those two wins was a season-opening 45-0 pasting of Division I-AA Western Carolina. The only other W came in a 36-17 victory at Rice, which also went 2-10 last year, losing its first nine in a row. You take away those two wins, plus a 56-31 loss at Georgia Tech, and Vanderbilt scored a grand total of 84 points in its other nine games (barely 9 points per contest), tallying 13 points or less eight times. In all, Vandy’s average of 16.3 ppg ranked 113th out of 117 teams in the nation.

It was enough to make coach Bobby Johnson hand in his whistle after eight seasons at the helm – only Johnson didn’t resign after the season; he waited until July, leaving his players high and dry just weeks before the start of fall camp.

You talk about two programs at opposite ends of the stability spectrum! Even more troubling, Vandy – which went 0-5 SU and ATS in its lined home games last year, returns just 11 starters.

Admittedly, Northwestern has some holes to fill, too, as it must replace its starting QB and two leading receivers. But here’s where Fitzgerald’s presence comes into play; whereas such key losses would’ve crippled his predecessors and sent the program tumbling backward, Fitzgerald has been able to reload and all accounts suggest junior QB Dan Persa will be every bit as successful as the departed Mike Kafka (who threw for more than 3,400 yards and accounted for 25 passing and rushing TDs last year).

Bottom line: These are two teams headed in different directions. And when you contrast Vandy’s ugly results at home last year in lined games with the fact that Northwestern has won seven of its last 10 road games and covered in eight of the last nine away from Evanston, that puts me all over the Wildcats here, especially at a cheap price.

Red Sox (GAME 1 OF DOUBLEHEADER)

Forget about the fact the Red Sox have tattooed left-handed pitching at Fenway Park this year, to the tune of a .282 team batting average. Forget about the fact that the southpaw they’re facing today – Chicago’s John Danks – has a 7.79 ERA in his last three starts and that his team is 1-5 in his last six outings, including three straight road losses. Forget about the fact that Danks is 1-4 with a 5.08 ERA in five career starts against Boston, with the White Sox getting outsrored in those four losses by a combined tally of 32-5.

All of that is interesting stuff and certainly supports this play. But really what this comes down to is Boston’s Clay Buchholz has been almost perfect over the past six weeks. Since getting roughed up in a 6-4 loss at Oakland – his first start after spending a month on the DL – Buchholz is 5-0 with a 1.07 ERA in seven starts, six of which the Red Sox have won. In those eight starts, he’s allowed just 35 hits and 14 walks (49 baserunners) in 50 2/3 innings, and opponents are barely batting .200 against him.

In his last four starts overall, Buchholz has given up just one earned run in 28 1/3 innings (that came in Boston’s 3-2 loss at Tampa Bay on Saturday – its only defeat with Buchholz starting since July 21). And in his last three home starts, he’s allowed just two runs (one earned) on 12 hits in 21 innings. Boston won all three games by a combined score of 15-3.

For the season, Buchholz is 15-5 with a 2.21 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP, including 7-3 with a 2.29 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 11 starts at home. He’s also 13-3 with a 1.76 ERA in night games (2-2, 4.03 in the daytime). And then there’s this: With Buchholz starting, Boston is on positive hot streaks of 26-8 overall, 7-0 at home, 21-6 as a favorite, 8-1 against A.L. Central teams, 11-1 versus opponents with a winning record, 5-0 on Friday and 14-3 when he opens a series.

By comparison, the White Sox are 1-5 in Danks’ last six starts overall, 0-4 in his last four against the A.L. East and 2-11 in his last 13 Friday starts.

Throw in Chicago’s 2-8 record in its last 10 games at Fenway Park, and this is a big-time no-brainer! Lay it with the BoSox.

Marc Lawrence

Guaranteed Pick: Marc Lawrence

Game: Arkansas St. at Auburn Sep 4 2010 7:00PM
Prediction: Arkansas St.
Reason: Play On: Arkansas State (Game 201) Note: The Red Wolves invade Auburn to take on the Tigers in the season opener for both squads with plenty of winning angles in their favor this evening. For openers, ASU is 5-2 SU in season openers under head coach Steve Roberts, including 3-1 SU and 3-0 ATS the last four seasons, includiing a four-point win at Texas A&M (as a 19-point underdog) and an eight-point loss at Texas (as a 40-point underdog). From our database we note that dogs of 28 or more points in season opening games that won three or more games the previous year are 12-2 ATS when facing a foe in its season opener that won eight or fewer games last year since 1995, including 7-0 ATS if the opponent won 13 or less of its previous 22 games. It should also be noted that while the Tigers improved from five wins to eight last season, their defense deteriorated 56 YPG in the process, marking the third straight year it has declined. With Auburn head coach Gene Chizik just 13-24 straight-up in his college football head coaching career, with ONE WIN by more than 27 points (a 32-victory over Furman), and the Tigers having SEC rival Mississippi State on deck this Thursday, look for the Red Wolves to howl once again tonight. We recommend a strong 3-unit play on Arkansas State. Note: this game is DOUBLE GUARANTEED

5 Units Texas Longhorns -31

The Texas Longhorns will be breaking in a new QB this year as the Colt McCoy era has come to an end. As with other top programs, when Texas loses one star, another emerges, so I expect Garrett Gilbert to have a big year for the Horns. While he struggled early in the title game last year, he actually finished that game really strong and will be better off this year for the experience. The good news for Rice is that they bring back nine starters on each side of the ball, but the bad news is that they were 2-10 last season, and their QB is gone. This is a young team that saw 22 freshmen see action a year ago and playing the likes of Texas is not conducive to starting strong. Last year they faced Texas Tech and a powerful Houston offense and gave up a combined 132 points in the two games. I don't see anything here to make me think that this one isn't going be any prettier. Texas scored 40 ppg last year while Rice managed just 18. I like Texas in a blowout.
