Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (10-10, 3.06 ERA)

The South Paw has been as dominant as any pitcher in baseball over his past three starts.

Hollywood, who ranks 188th in the National League with 188 strikeouts this season, has finally cut down on allowing hurtful home runs and it shows.

Over his past three starts, Hamels has lasted at least seven innings each time he has toed the rubber and allowed no runner to score over that span. That’s a span of 22 innings in which he has given up no runs and allowed a meager 11 hits. He also has a solid 18-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Hamels said the key to his strong play has been his even-keel approach.

"I want to go out there and get one guy out my next game," he told the Associated Press.

Chris Capuano, Milwaukee Brewers (3-3, 4.09 ERA)

The 32-year-old has had Tommy Johns surgery twice and seems to again be regaining his form with the Brew Crew.

Cappy had a rough start to the season but has been better than solid in his two most recent outings, ending up with a hard-luck, 1-0 loss to the Phillies and besting the Cardinals, 8-1. In those two starts, he combined to allow only two runs over 12 innings while striking out six.

Next up for the South Paw is Houston, which is hitting a meager .133 against him in 4.1 innings this season.

"Knock on wood, I've been real happy with the way the arm feels," Capuano told the Associated Press.

Slumping

Livan Hernandez, Washington Nationals (9-11, 3.82 ERA)

The veteran right-hander had a phenomenal first half, but has tailed off following the All-Star Break.

Hernandez allowed only three runs in his most recent outing, but that is in stark contrast to the train wreck he has become the past few weeks. Over his past 11 starts, the Cuban has an ERA north of 4.60.

More specifically in his past four outings, Hernandez has yielded 23 earned runs over just 21.1 innings, including giving up 30 hits and issuing nine walks over that span.

Zach Duke, Pittsburgh Pirates (7-13, 5.47 ERA)

The left-hander will be owed around $5 million this offseason if he is tendered an offer from the Pirates. He sure hasn’t earned that payday this season. Over his past three starts, Duke has allowed 12 earned runs over 11.1 innings, including lasting only an inning in his most recent outing against the Braves.

"Obviously I wasn't doing much good while I was out there, so I can't fault the manager [for being lifted after one inning]," Duke told the Associated Press. "I was more frustrated with myself at that point."

The last three times he has toed the rubber, he has combined to give up an abysmal 20 hits and issued six walks.

Tuesday's Wagering Tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Cubs at Cardinals: The hosts opened at -210, but have since seen that line shift to -230.

Weather to watch

Blue Jays at Orioles: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing from third toward first across the diamond.

Phillies at Marlins: There is an expected 15 mph wind blowing in from center field and a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Pirates at Mets: There is an expected 14 mph wind blowing from first toward third across the diamond.

Who's hot

Over is 21-10 in the Dreams past 31 road games.

Phillies are 14-3 in their past 17 road games.

Rangers are 8-3 in their past 11 home games.

Who's not

Under is 35-17-2 in Cleveland’s past 54 games.

Under is 9-2 in Houston’s past 11 home games.

Nationals are 16-40 in their past 56 road games.

Key stat

55 – Pass attempts for Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, breaking the previous NFL record for a player making his debut by 11 tries. Bradford also set the new mark for completions (28) in an NFL debut as he moved the Rams offense effectively against the Cardinals. If there was any doubt that the Rams would put the ball in his hands from Day 1, those issues have been put to rest. This will result in both some unexpected wins and some ugly blowouts this season. He has the green light, and that’s good to know upfront.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Colts safety Bob Sanders has the injury bug seemingly every season, and this year is no different. Sanders, who is an All-Pro caliber player when healthy, suffered a biceps injury on Sunday that could be so brutal that he may miss the duration of the regular season. The former Iowa standout is a noted run-stuffer and after the defending AFC champions were gashed for 257 yards and three touchdowns on the ground last week against Houston, a season-ending injury to a defensive star is something they simply can’t afford. The team’s next four games are against the Giants, Broncos, Jaguars, Chiefs and Redskins, all teams that tout solid running attacks.

Game of the day

Atlanta Dream at Seattle Storm (-7.5, 163)

Notable quotable

"We're very astonished, to say the least, that not one team has contacted us with any interest. I just don't understand it. What has Allen Iverson done to not warrant interest in him?" – Gary Moore, Allen Iverson’s personal manager, on his player not being contacted by any teams prior to the start of training camp.

Tips and notes

The Phillies lineup again is under fire. With substantial injuries to Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Placido Polanco and Jimmy Rollins this season, the unit again could be broken up. Rollins had an MRI on Monday that revealed a strained hamstring and kept him out of the lineup against the Marlins. The short stop is hitting .245 with seven home runs and 37 RBI this year, but is terrific defensively and the team’s table-setter on offense. He already has been on the DL twice this year and a third trip could mean an end to the World Series aspirations of the two-time defending National League champions.

Maybe everything isn’t perfect with the Packers offense. Green Bay hung on for a 27-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but the team’s aerial attack sputtered down the stretch, especially without a strong running game to give the team balance. Running back Ryan Grant is expected to miss the game with a severe ankle injury. That means Brandon Jackson, a third-year player out of Nebraska, and John Kuhn, the team’s fullback, are the only ball carriers left on the roster. Look for the ball to be in the air a lot against Buffalo on Sunday.

Why can’t the Rockies win the National League West? The team is 17-4 in its past 21 games and a staggering 7-1 in its past eight as an underdog. The Rox also started the week with a 10-game winning streak, one tie of its franchise record. Colorado hosts the Padres on Tuesday and is a phenomenal 11-4 against San Diego this season. "Streaks likes this, you win in all kinds of different ways," Rockies manager Jim Tracy told the Associated Press.

Tuesday 6* Second Half MLB Total of the Year from 100% System averaging nearly 14 runs per game + 14-2 AL Totals system. Monday Goes 2-0

On Tuesday the MLB Free play is on the Milwaukee Brewers. Game 959 at 8:05 eastern. Houston qualifies in a negative system here tonight that pertains to certain home favorites off a home favored win, if they scored 4 or less runs with 10 more hits and 10 or more men left on base if the total was 8 or less and the opponent tonight is off a road dog loss and scored 2 or less runs. Home favorites in this role are several games under .500. The Brewers are a live dog here tonight. They average 5 runs per game in road games this year as well. On the mound they C. Capuano tonight. Capuano has been real good of late and has allowed just 2 runs in 12 innings of work as he finally appears to be healthy from all the injuries. B. Norris of Houston has been disappointing this season with a 4.90 era. Over his last 3 starts he has a horrendous 6.06 era. Look for Milwaukee to get the win tonight. On the Tuesday late phone card I have the 6* MLB Second half total of the year form a 100% totals system that averages nearly 14 runs per game. I also have a secondary totals play in AL action that has cashed 14 of 16 times and has several high end power angles attached. Monday card swept MLB and NFL.. For the free play take the Milwaukee Brewers. GC

wow what a scam artist, I had Football jesus for the weekend. He called and text his personal plays to me. Now i see on his twitter he is claiming wins on games he A) never gave me or B) gave me the other side. He told me early monday that the Jets were the play but now I see on his twitter that he is claiming a win with the ravens plus 3 and he states he put a small amount on the jets -1.. He also stated he wasnt betting the san diego vs kc game but he had an opinion on san diego yet he his claiming he cashed the chiefs plus the points. He was not on the dolphins like he is claiming he was. I can tell you he cashed Houston and Seattle but yet he is claiming 10 - 2 for the weekend. I went 2 - 3 on Sunday 1 - 2 on Saturday.... and 0 -2 with him on monday. Now John I might not have a math degree but how doe 3-7 equal 10 - 2 . You are the biggest scam artist out there. I realize this is going to get moved due to chatter but I just want everyone to be ware and stay away from this guy

Jeff Benton
Monday's Action
15 DIME baseball selection is on COLORADO -1½ runs (run-line) over San Diego from Coors Field. As I go live with today’s plays, the Rockies are catahing +125 on the run line across the board. Run-line plays require liseting starting pitchers, so San Diego’s Jon Garland and Colorado’s Jason Hammel must start. If either doesn’t pitch, this release is VOID!

5 DIME baseball selection is on KANSAS CITY over Oakland from Kaufmann Stadium. As I go live with today’s plays, Vegas and offshrre books have this as a solid pick-em price. Note that when placing your action, you MUST list Zack Greinke as the Royals’ starting pitcher. If Greinke doesn’t start, this release is VOID!

ROCKIES 1½ runs (Listing Garland and Hammel as starting pitchers)

Huge victory for San Diego in Coors Field last night, as it cooled off Colorado with a 6-4 victory, ending the Rockies’ 10-game winning streak and putting themselves back atop the N.L. West staadings (half-game ahead of San Francisco and 2½ games ahead of the Rockies). Still, if you take away a three-game home sweep of the crappy Dodgers (who have quit on the season), the Padres are just 2-13 in their last 15 games overall. And of those 13 defeats, 10 have been by more than one run.

Even though San Diego continues to sport a solid 39-30 road record, it hasn’t won consecutive road games against a playoff contender since beating Tampa Bay on June 22 and 23. At the same time, you have to go back to July 27-28 for the last time the Rockies lost consecutive home games (shockingly, against the lowly Pirates). In fact, only twice all season has Colorado lost as many as two in a row in the same hoemestand.

Of course, no team in baseball has been better at protecting its home turf than the Rockies, who are 50-23 at Coors Field (13-3 in the last 16), thanks in large part to an offense that is crushing the baseball to the tune of a .302 home batting average.

The Rockies are 17-5 in their last 22 games overall, and they’re still 10-5 against the Padres this season (San Diego hasn’t won back-to-back meetings all year). As for the run-line aspect of this play, note that 12 of the 15 meetings this season – including nine of the last 10 – have been decided by more than one run.

Finally, the Rockies have the better pitcher on the mound in Jason Hammel. Colorado is 5-0 in his last five starts and 7-1 in his last eight outings (with Hammel going at least six innings in seven of those eight games). Additionally, Hammel is 7-1 with a 3.67 ERA at Coors Field, with the Rockies going 11-3 in his 14 home starts this year and 21-6 in his last 27 home starts dating to last year. And in his three starts against San Diego since June 29, Hammel is 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA (all three wins by multiple runs).

Meanwhile, San Diego’s Jon Garland has hit a wall (0-3, 6.19 ERA last three starts); he’s been far less comfrrtable on the road (6-6, 4.04 ERA) than at home (7-5, 3.10 ERA); and he’s 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA in two starts against the Rockies this season – a 4-2 loss in Colorado on April 11 and a 6-2 home loss to Hammel on Sept. 4.

With Hammel leading the way on the mound and the Rockies’ powerful offense (.311 team batting average last 10 games) backing him with plenty of run support, Colorado gets back on track and tightens the N.L. West race a little more with a blowout victory over the punchless Padres (batting .214 in their last 10 games).

ROYALS (Listing Greinke as K.C.'s starting pitcher)

Obviously, this hasn’t been the kind of season Zack Greinke was hoping for following his dominating Cy Young performance in 2009. He’s just 8-12 with a 3.90 ERA, and he’s received arguably the worst run support of any top-flight starter in baseball (the Royals average just 3.2 runs when Greinke pitches).

All this said, I can’t pass up a guy with Grienke’s stuff at home at this kind of pick-em price, even if it is against an Oakland team that has dominated Kansas City this year (6-1 in seven games) and even if I do respect A’s starter Gio Gonzalez (14-8, 3.16 ERA, including 5-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his last five starts).

For one thing, Greinke hasn’t been pitching horribly of late – he’s allowed 15 runs in his last six starts covering 44 1/3 innings (3.05 ERA), and he’s gone at least six innings in eight straight starts, including four games when he pitched exactly eight innings. And even though Greinke suffered a 5-1 home loss to Gonzalez and the A’s in mid July, he’s still 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA in his career against Oakland (12 games, eight starts).

Back to Gonzalez. The southpaw is obviously rolling right now, and he was terrific when he matched up against Greinke two months ago (one run, seven hits, one walk in seven innings). However, in two previous starts against the Royals, he gave up nine runs (eight earned) in 9 1/3 innings. Also, it should be noted that Gonzalez has some start splits, as he’s 8-3 with a 2.70 ERA at home but 6-5 with a 3.61 ERA on the road, and he’s 7-1 with a 2.10 ERA in 10 day games (Oakland is 9-1) but 7-7 with a 3.81 ERA in 20 nighttime starts (Oakland is 8-11).

Bottom line: I know all the stats and trends point to the A’s – including the fact that Oakland has won 61 of the last 93 overall meetings in this rivalry and 36 of the last 51 meetings in Kansas City – but again, to get Greinke at this kind of price is too good to pass up. And for what it’s worth, there’s a “homer” umpire working the dish tonight, as the home team is 25-9 in Mike Muchlinski’s last 34 games behind the plate, 4-0 in his last four games involving the Royals and 6-1 in his last seven games involving the A’s.
