Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Roy Oswalt, Philadelphia Phillies (13-13, 2.90 ERA)

Oswalt is a big part of the Phillies postseason push in September. Since joining Philadelphia, the right hander is 7-1 with a 1.94 ERA and in his last three starts, Oswalt is 3-0 with 20 total strikeouts. In his last trip to the bump, he allowed one run on six hits in six innings for a 9-1 win over the Nationals.

Brett Anderson, Oakland Athletics (6-6, 2.83 ERA)

The A’s southpaw is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his last three trips to the bump. Anderson appears to be fully recovered from a knee injury and is coming off a 6 2-3-innings performance in which he allowed one run on just four hits while striking out five batters. He’s collected 14 Ks in his last three starts.

Slumping

Charlie Morton, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-11, 8.61 ERA)

For all those pitchers who have been featured in Streaking and Slumping, take conciliation in this: At least you’re not Charlie Morton. The Bucs righty has just one win on the year and it’s been eight starts since that lone victory, posting a 0-6 record in that span. Morton is making some improvement. He took two no-decisions in his most recent trips to the bump, giving up only five total runs through 11 1-3 innings, and is toying with his delivery.

Jon Lackey, Boston Red Sox (12-11, 4.63 ERA)

It’s safe to say Lackey’s first year in Beantown was a disappointment, especially after the veteran pitcher dropped his last three start and posted a 4.91 ERA in that stretch. The right hander was beat up in his most recent appearance, giving up six runs on eight hits in just over four innings of so-called work.

Wednesday 2 top Tier MLB Plays. 90% Totals system averages 12 runs per game + NL Divisional Power system 13-1 Game of the Month. Tuesday card goes even with split.

On Wednesday the free MLB Play is on the New York Yankees. Game 974 at 7:05 eastern. The Yanks qualify in a solid system here tonight. What we want to do is play on home favorites with a total of 10 or higher if they are off a home favored win at -140 or higher, won by 5 or more runs, had 10+ hits with 5 or more men left on base and are playing an opponent off a road dog loss of 5 or more runs, scored 4 or less runs also with 5 or more men left on base. This very technical system has cashed 15 of the last 18 times. New York has stepped it up and sent a message to Tampa Bay. These two are duking it out for the AL. East. The Pitching match up shows no real advantage for either teams as Both Davis and Burnett for New York have similar road to home era numbers. Look for the Yankees to take a 3rd straight from the Rays. On Wednesday those looking for something to pound consider the NL Divisional Game of the Month, backed with a huge system and a 13-1 Power Angle. Also on the card is a MLB Terminator Totals system that averages 12 runs per game. Tuesday card splits. . For the free play take the New York Yankees. BOL GC

REASON FOR PICK: The White Sox look like a team that's simply going through the motions after being virtually eliminated from playoff contention last week.

They've now dropped eight games in a row, and find themselves in a tough spot on Wednesday. They'll be looking ahead to a day off in the California sunshine on Thursday before opening a weekend series in Anaheim on Friday night.

I mentioned this in my analysis of Monday's play on the A's, and it's worth bringing up again today; entering this series, the White Sox were one of only three teams to own a winning record overall, but a losing record against left-handed starting pitching. That angle is back in play as they face a lefty in Brett Anderson on Wednesday. More on him shortly.

The Oakland A's certainly haven't quit. They've now won three games in a row and 11 of their last 17 overall. They've been fantastic here at home, going 22-10 in their last 32 games at the Coliseum.

The White Sox gave Paul Konerko the night off on Tuesday. He'll be back in the lineup this afternoon, but keep in mind, he hasn't recorded a hit since last Thursday against Minnesota. Meanwhile, Manny Ramirez has essentially been a bust since joining the team. You can see why this is a club that is really struggling to scratch together much offense lately.

Edwin Jackson will get the call for the White Sox on Wednesday. He's been simply awful here in September, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA and .333 opponents batting average. That shouldn't come as a big surprise, as he's a career 10-13 pitcher with a 6.17 ERA and .308 opponents average in the month of September.

Jackson did take a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his last start against the Tigers, but imploded from there in an eventual 9-2 loss. He hasn't had good command of his pitches in his last three starts, leaving the ball up with regularity. As a result, he's recorded a 23:42 ground ball to fly ball ratio over that stretch.

The current A's roster is hitting .339 and slugging .429 against Jackson, but that's in only 56 at-bats. We can take away Coco Crisp's 9-for-22 off of him as he's out for the season, that leaves their current roster hitting .294 against him. He certainly hasn't fooled this lineup, recording a weak 7:6 strikeout to walk ratio along the way.

The A's will counter with Brett Anderson. He's been brilliant here in September, going 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA and .226 opponents average in four starts, spanning 27 1/3 innings of work. In Anderson's first two big league seasons, he's gone 4-0 with a 2.28 ERA and .247 opponents average in September.

Unlike Jackson, Anderson has shown excellent command lately, and really for the better part of the season (when he's been healthy). He owns a 162:133 ground ball to fly ball ratio, which should aid him against a White Sox lineup that lives and dies by the long ball at times. Note that Anderson has allowed only six home runs in 92 1/3 innings pitched this season, although he has given one up in three consecutive starts.

The current White Sox roster is hitting .339 and slugging .435 against Anderson, but they have just four extra-base hits off of him 62 at-bats. Ramon Castro is the only Chicago hitter to have taken Anderson deep. The left-hander has recorded a 9:4 strikeout to walk ratio against current Sox hitters.

The White Sox will get some support from bettors on Wednesday, as is often the case when a team is trying to avoid a series sweep. Keep in mind, Chicago has already been swept in a three-game series three times this month. Take Oakland (7*).

Jeff Benton WEDNESDAY'S WINNERS
10 DIME baseball seleation on the HOUSTON ASTROS over the Nationals. This is a pick-em contest across the board, with the Astros as a very slight -110 favorite in some spots. Note that you must list both Houston’s Wandy Rodriguez and Washington’s Jason Marquis as the starting pitichers. If either does not start, this play is VOID.

10 DIME baseball selection on the CINCINNATI REDS over the Brewers. This is also a pick-em contest across the board, with the Reds a very slight -110 favorite in some spots. Note that you must list ONLY Johnny Cueto as Cincinnati’s starting pitcher. If Cueto does not start, this play is VOID.

10 DIME baseball selection on the Padres-Dodgers game UNDER THE TOTAL The polted total in this contest is 7 runs. Starting pitchers are always listed with baseball totals, so both San Diego’s Tim Stauffer and L.A.’s Ted Lilly must start or this play is VOID.

ASTROS (Listing Rodriguez and Marquis)

Two words: Wandy Rodriguez

Two more words: Jason Marquis.

That’s the pitching matchup in this contest. There’s not much more that needs to be said here. Rodriguez has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball over the past three months, going 8-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his last 16 starts. Rodriguez has pitched at least six innings in each of those 16 games, giving up three earned runs or fewer in 15 of them. Breaking it down further, Rodriguez has given up one or zero earned runs 11 times over this 16-start stretch.

Simply put, Rodriguez has been an absolute beast for the Astros since the end of June. At the same time, Marquis has been absolute mess for the Nationals. He’s lost nine of his 11 starts, giving up 40 earned runs, 62 hits and 22 walks in 46 2/3 innings. Those numbers equate to a 7.71 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP, and oppasing hitters are reaching base at a 41 percent clip against Marquis.

Even worse, Marquis is 0-5 with an 8.86 ERA in five home games. And in his last five starts against the Astros since the start of the 2008 season, Marquis has allowed 23 earned runs in 27 1/3 innings (7.57 ERA). That includes three losses in his last three starts against Houston. At the same time, the Astros are 6-1 in Rodriguez’s seven career starts against the Nationals.

If the pitching mismatch isn’t enough to play Houston, this should be: The Astros are on a 20-9 overall run, and even though they turned a 3-1 eighth-inning lead into an 8-4 loss last night – giving up seven runs in the eighth – Houston is 8-1 in its last nine games following a defeat. Conversely, the Nationals are in slumps of 3-10 overall, 1-6 at home and 18-39 after a victory.

REDS (Listing only Cueto)

Damn right I’m backing the Reds again tonight. And even though I admittedly think more of tonight’s starter for Milwaukee (Randy Wolf) than I did of last night’s (Dave Bush), I also trust Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto (12-5, 3.35 ERA) much more than I do Edinson Volquez, who dominated the Brewers on Tuesday.

Starting pitchers aside, the main reason for this play is the fact the Reds have completely owned the Brewers, winning 13 of the last 14 meetings dating to July 2009, including seven in a row this season. Cumulative score in those seven games: Cincinnati 50, Milwaukee 20. The Reds’ 13-1 run against the Brewers includes seven wins in eight games at Miller Park.

More incredible ongoing trends for the Reds: 46-22 as a favorite, 8-1 as a road favorite, 38-18 against N.L. Central rivals, 10-4 against left-handed starters, 75-29 versus teams with a losing record and 40-14 on the road against losing teams. On the other hand, the Brewers have lost 17 of their last 27 overall.

Back to Cueto: In his last five starts, he’s allowed just eight earined runs in 33 innings (2.18 ERA). And his seven career starts against the Reds have all been quality outings, with the right-hander allowing a total of 14 earned runs in 45 1/3 innings (2.78 ERA).

Padres-Dodgers UNDER (Listing Stauffer and Lilly)

Here are the final scores of the last five Padres-Dodgers contests (all won by San Diego, by the way): 5-0, 4-2, 2-1, 4-0, 6-0. Obviously, the under cashed in all five games. Going back to last September, these divisional foes have faced of 19 times, and 15 of those games have stayed under the total, and 16 of those 19 have featured seven runs or less.

The Dodgers have scored two runs or less in more than half (33) of their 63 games since the All-Star break, and they come into this contest batting just .230 as a team over their last 10 games, including .212 against right-handed pitching (they face righty Tim Stauffer tonight). Meanwhile, San Diego has scored three runs or less in 15 of their last 26 games, and although the Padres pushed acrols six runs in last night’s 6-0 shutout victory, they haven’t scored more than four runs in back-to-back meetings with L.A. since last July.

Stauffer has a 1.99 ERA in 63 1/3 innings (four starts) with San Diego this season, including holding the Dodgers to one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. In his last three starts against L.A., Stauffer has surrendered just three earned runs in 16 2/3 innings. All three games stayed low, and in addition to that, San Diego has gone low in 10 of Stauffer’s last 11 starts overall, each of his last five starts on the road and each of his last eight starts against N.L. West teams,

Meanwhile, Dodgers lefty Ted Lilly is 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA in five starts at Dodger Stadium this year, giving up just 19 hits and six walks while striking out 30 in 32 2/3 innings and holding opponents to a .170 batting average. The last two times he’s faced San Diego, Lilly has given up total of one run (a solo homer), six hits and one walk in 13 innings (both games stayed under the total).

Tip Of The Day

San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs
Wednesday, September 22nd, 8:05 ET

Tonight’s tip is all about the pitching matchup between Sanchez and Wells. Sanchez is starting for the Giants tonight and has been pitching excellent. He has a consistent 3.22 ERA and 1.231 WHIP in all his starts this season and has a slightly better 2.94 ERA in road starts.
