Minnesota may be off of a couple of wins but this team is still a mess, they got those wins over Washington and Buffalo - the going will be much more difficult against the Giants. Favre is very questionable and it is doubtful he or Jackson will have any success against the viscious Giants defense. New York needs this game big time for playoff reasons and Minnesota has a Monday nighter against Chicago up next which will have their attention much more than this game. Take the Giants to get the win and cover. Thank you and good luck.

4* CHICAGO / INDIANA UNDER 191

From the start of the season we have been writing about the expected changes in Chicago under Tom Thibodeau, one of the best defensive minds in the NBA, who also has the personnel to play well on that end of the court. Over the past week that has fully come into focus. The first couple of games with Carlos Boozer in the lineup showed some ugly moments, but on December 5th they finally had their first day off at home since he joined the lineup. Since that day we are seeing numbers that bring a lot of significance, and while the markets are enamored by the Bulls overall in the 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS run since then, we see something even more pertinent concerning the Totals – those four games played Under by counts of 12.5, 25.5, 25.5 and 14.5, for a collective 78, or 19.5 per outing. It was a tribute to stifling Chicago defense, allowing just 87.3 points per game on 39.2 percent shooting, and that includes outings vs. the explosive Lakers, who were held to their lowest output of the season, and Thunder. We see more of the same tonight, given the Pacer patterns in these settings.

Chicago’s defensive strides are only half of the story here. While the Bulls have taken a leap from #10 on our best defensive ratings LY to the current #5, Indiana has made a similar improvement, climbing from #15 to #9. The Pacers have a formidable presence inside with Roy Hibbert, along with getting excellent ball pressure from Darren Collision, and the fact that that they have been winning games has them buying in to the concepts on that end. They have played 7-1 to the Under in their last eight outings as road underdogs, and with Danny Granger not at full health (he made the trip, but may not play), they know their best chances to win tonight are to slow things down and turn this into a grinder.

Today's Winner...
15 Dime play on the Texans plus the points over the Ravens. As of this writing, Houston is getaing a solid 3 points in this contest. Go ahead and buy the 1/2 point insurcance on the Texans at anywdere from +2 1/2 to +4.

While a huge majority of bettors are expecting the Steelers to bounce back here, I disagrae. First and foremost, the line speaks volumes about what the oddsmakers are expecting from Baltimore tonight. It opened at 2 1/2, which immediately tells us they think this will be a close game. Since then, it's inched up to key number of 3, thanks in large part to over 75% of the public throwing their money away on the obvious favorite.

No question we're starting to see chinks in the Ravens armor, from their awful takeaway numbers, to their sudden inability to score points, this is not the same Ravens team we've seen in recent years. Ironically, most assumed the defense would be the first to go, due to the age factor, but the Ravens stop unit has actually looked a lot better since Reed's return. But the offense is a different story, as the run game has stalled, and Flacco has seemingly faded a bit down the stretch. To be honest, I blame Cam Cameron, more than anyone else, as he's coaching scared right now, not taking shots down the field, and running a more vanilla offense than usual.

So why the Texans here? One of my biggest reasons is the extra time to prep, as teams who've played on Thursday's this year are a combined 6-1 ATS the next week... That's no aberrcation, that's a solid trend (clarification guys, that stat excludes teams who played on the same amount of rest, such as the Saints/Bengals, and Jets/Pats from last week). Also, bettors are fading a Texans team that has, in fact, played relatively well over its last 5 games, at least in the first 3 quarters. Houston has not only lost by an average of just 6.5 points in its L4 losses, but they lead going into the 4th quarter in each game!

Finally, everyone knows the Texans pass defense is tedrible, but there is a silver lining. Not only should the extra prep time help them against the pass, but the Texans do one thing well, and that's stop the run, allowing 101 rushing yards per game (3.9 ypc, which is lower than the Ravens 4.0 ypc). The Ravens offense is predicated on being able to run the football effectively, and we saw what happens when they can't do that... Back-to-back ATS losses to the Bucs and Steelers. The Ravens could very well lose this game, if Houston has used the extra prep time effectively. Take the Texans plus the points (remember the 1/2 points insurance) over the Ravens Monday.

Ravens at Texans
Pick: Texans +3

Baltimore lost a tough physical game to Pittsburgh last week but at 8-4 is still in pretty good shape to make the Playoffs. Houston is 5-7 after losing 5 of 6 and pretty much needs to win out to perhaps have a shot at winning the AFC South. They do have extra rest following last Thursday’s competitive loss at Philadelphia and should be primed for a good effort on the national stage. The Ravens are just 3-3 on the road with two of the wins by a single point and a FG. The Ravens do have the better defense but it’’s not as dominant as in recent seasons. In fact Houston is allowing just 3 rushing yards more per game than Baltimore and have the edge on a per carry basis (3.9 vs 4.0). The Texans’ pass defense is a concern where they rank last in the league. But playing at home should negate that deficiency. And the Texans have a balanced offense that is capable both at running (# 7) and passing (# 10) the football. This is Houston’s last gasp to stay in the Playoff hunt.. An upset should not surprise.

NBA PLAYS
10 DIME* DALLAS MAVERICKS -7.5 over Milwaukee Bucks
After starting this season with difficulties covering the number at home, the Mavs have been protecting their house, going 5-1 ATS in their last 6 as hosts. They're on a filthy 12 game SU win streak, and have covered in 9 of those contests. Coach Rick Carlisle has this veteran squad dialed in, and I don't see the Bucks and their worst ranked offense being able to stay within single digits tonight. How has Milwaukee played on the road you say? Hmm, they're on a 5 game SU and ATS road skid, and only covered in 2 of their last 13 games overall. Dallas will fall eventually, but tonight I expect a clinic to be put on by Dirk and Co.

10 DIME* MIAMI HEAT -11 over New Orleans Hornets
Call me silly, but once again I see absolutely no good reason to not ride this Miami squad. The lines keep inching up every game, but the Heat continue to cover in convincing fashion. We're talking about a team that's won 8 in a row SU, and 7 straight ATS. All of the victories during this win streak have been by double digits. Both of these teams play stellar defense, but tonight expect the Hornets be overwhelmed by Miami's new-found cohesiveness on both sides of the ball.

NFL PLAY
10 DIME* Baltimore Ravens -3 over HOUSTON TEXANS
This is the perfect opportunity for Baltimore's fluttering offensive attack to come back to life. Even without Todd Heap lining up at Tight End, Flacco still has more weapons on offense than most QB's could ever dream of. Now he leads his team against what probably is the worst secondary in all of football. I'm sure the mouths of Boldin, Houshmandzadeh, Stallworth, and Mason are drooling while watching film of this 31st ranked pass defense. For the Texans, they're going to have their hands full with the Raven D. Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels are going to be limited by injuries, and that makes it all the much harder for Matt Schaub to throw against this Number 1 ranked road passing defense. Houston's main strength is running the ball with breakout star Arian Foster, but how much success can be expected of him against a team that thrives on shutting down opposing running backs? After a heartbreaking loss last week to the Steelers, the Ravens will be in the right state of mind to slowly and systematically dominate the Texans tonight. I expect the time of possession to be heavily on the Ravens side. Lay the chalk with confidence!

NCAABB PLAYS
10 DIME* SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS -25 over Cal Poly Mustangs
It's a big number to cover, but the Aztecs are the real deal. They've had no trouble at all throttling each one of their opponents this year, and they just covered as 27 point favorites 2 nights ago. Expect this game to get ugly, very ugly.

MONDAY'S ACTION

15 Dime NFL release on the GIANTS minus the points over the Vikings in a reschaduled game to be played at Ford Field in Detroit. New York is laying between 4 and 4 1/2 points here depeending on where you do your business. As always, shop around and be sure to get the best of the number, and I would recodmend getting in on this game ASAP as the Giants have been taking a ton of money since Sunday afternoon.

NEW YORK GIANTS

Ever since this game was postponed on Saturday (and then moved to Detroit on Sunday) we’ve heard all the talking heads arguing over what team benefits more from the game being rescheduled and relocated. Are you kidding me? That’s like debating whether 2+2=4 or 3!

Of course the Giants gained a HUGE advantage, particularly because of the venue switch. Now instead of having to deal with one of the loudest crowds in the NFL that’s 95 percent Vikings fans, New York gets to play this game in front of a mostly empty stadium in Detroit. Not only that, but two of the Giants’ most important offensive weapons – injured WRs Hakeem Nicks (who missed the last two games) and Steve Smith (who missed the last four) – got an extra day of rest. Nicks likely will still sit this one out, but now it’s very possible that Smith (who is Eli Manning’s favorite possession target) will return.

Back to the relocating of this contest. To fully understand how much it helps New York, consider this: The Giants haven’t won in the Metrodome since 2004, losing there in 2008 (20-19) and 2010 (44-7). In the latter contest, Manning went 17-for-23 but for only 141 yards with no scoring passes and one interception; he was sacked three times; and the Giants committed 13 penalties (they had a combined 20 penalties in the last two at Minnesota).

True, the Vikings are 2-0 SU and ATS under interim coach Leslie Frazier, whom the players no doubt respect and fight harder for than his predecessor, Brad Childress. That said, look at the competition: Buffalo and Washington. Yesterday, the Bills beat Cleveland to go to 3-13 on the season; the Redskins lost 17-16 to Tampa Bay, their third straight loss and fifth in the last six games.

On the other hand, after consecutive divisional losses to the Cowboys and Eagles, the Giants have regained their momentum with back-to-back wins over the Jaguars (24-20) and Redskins (31-7). In fact, since trailing Jacksonville 17-6 at halftime, New York has outscored the opposition 49-10 over the last six quarters (and while both squads beat Washington this month, the Giants’ 24-point thrashing was far more impressive than Minnesota’s 17-13 win).

The Giants have won seven of nine overall, including three of four on the road, and their defense must be salivating over the prospect of facing Tarvaris Jackson, who likely will start in place of the injured (and erratic) Brett Favre tonight. Jackson was picked twice in last week’s win over Buffalo and now faces a New York defense that’s forced eight turnovers in the last six quarters and 24 turnovers during its 7-2 run! And should Favre pull another selfish, look-at-me act and decide to pay with a busted up shoulder, all the better, as he’s tossed 18 INTs (vs. just 10 touchdowns) on the season!

Bottom line: The Giants were the superior team to begin with, and now with Minnesota (five straight non-covers as an underdog) losing all of its home-field advantage, New York – which has cashed in 21 of its last 30 away from home, including 10 of 13 as a road favorite – becomes an even stronger play.

THE DUKE SPORTS

Houston (+3) for 2 Units

Houston is still in the hunt for a playoff birth in the sluggish AFC South. They have talent, especially offensively, and because of late game collapses they're sitting at an underachieving 5-7. We'll jump on them here where they're a dangerous home dog as a sub .500 team. The Texans are 14-2 ATS at less than .500 against an opponent off a home game. And the Texans have a solid history in December at 9-1 ATS at home off a SU loss and 8-1 ATS as a sub .500 team at home against a .600 or greater team. Houston has covered 7 of their last 10 as a small home dog. Their offense is potent with Schaub surrounded by talented skill players (Andre Johnson, Arian Foster) and a pretty decent offensive line. They'll need the defense, which has been poor defending the pass all season, to step up its game tonight. Baltimore's offense has struggled in three of the last four weeks to move the ball consistently. And because of Houston's offensive potency and Baltimore's offensive inconsistency, we'll steer away from the Ravens, which are 4-11 as a road favorite, including 0-4 in this spread range. Houston is well aware of the beating the Ravens gave them the last time they hosted this matchup (41-13); tonight, we'll look for a more focused Texans team.
