Atlanta Hawks at Phoenix Suns

Atlanta does not play particularly well on the road nor with revenge (9-22 ATS when seeking revenge for a home loss), so we will look to lay the points tonight when they visit the favored Phoenix Suns, who have covered the spread each of the last four meetings with the Hawks. Additionally, Phoenix gets the benefit of having enjoyed an extra day off as Atlanta got blown out last night by the Lakers. Look for the Suns to start the second half out with an easy cover!

BOBBY MAXWELL COMPS

For my comp selection, when you look at the history of this series, it makes sense that the oddsmakers put the Spurs as such a big favorite tonight. But look at what the Thunder did on Tuesday and know that they can score points against anybody and I’ll gladly grab the points with Oklahoma City.

The Thunder beat up the Clippers on Tuesday night in Oklahoma and didn’t even need their starters in the fourth quarter. Now they are at San Antonio going up against a well-rested Spurs’ squad. The Spurs have won each of the last five head-to-head meetings, including both this season.

But this Oklahoma City team is on the verge of a big second half. They’ve scored 101 points or more in 9 of their last 11 and just crushed the Kings and Clippers in their last two. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook aren’t worried about back-to-back games and they come in on ATS surges of 16-5 as a ‘dog of between 5 to 10 ½ points and 5-1 against Southwest Division teams.

In this series, the road team has cashed in six of the last eight meetings and the underdog comes in on a 7-3 ATS surge. I think the break might have been exactly what this Oklahoma City team needed to get its mind right and come on strong in the second half. They looked great on Tuesday and I don’t see much changing tonight. Grab the points and go with the Thunder.
3♦ OKLAHOMA CITY

For my comp selection, the first time these two met this season, it wasn’t even close as North Carolina crushed N.C. State 84-64 as a 10 ½-point home favorite. Tonight won’t be any closer as North Carolina has been playing outstanding basketball lately and will deliver an easy win and cover.

The Tar Heels have won eight of their last nine overall and over their last three they haven’t allowed the opposition more than 64 points.

N.C. State has lost five of its last seven, including an 87-80 loss at Maryland on Sunday. But the Wolf Pack have trouble scoring against the top ACC teams, including just 52 points against Duke, 50 against Clemson and the 64 against North Carolina.

North Carolina comes into this one having beaten its rival nine straight times by an average of 16.2 points, and the Tar Heels have won 15 of the last 16, including three straight on the Wolf Pack’s home court. They are also on several positive ATS streaks, including 4-0 on the road, 7-2 overall and 5-2 as a favorite.

The Wolf Pack are on ATS skids of 3-8 in ACC action, 2-6 as a home underdog. 1-6 after a straight-up loss and 2-9 against teams with a winning percentage better than .600.

I’ll go ahead and lay the points with North Carolina on the road in this one

The Jazz were blindsided by the sudden and shocking resignation of Jerry Sloan, their coach for the past 23 seasons. Not only did Sloan leave but so did his right-hand man and top assistant Phil Johnson.

The Jazz proceeded to drop their next three games following Sloan's departure. Interim coach Tyrone Corbin was caught in the whirlwind his team down to nine players because of injuries and minus an assistant coach.

Utah, though, has had a week to recover thanks to the long All-Star break. Corbin now has two full-time assistant coaches and could get back some of his walking wounded.

Star point guard Deron Williams has been dealing with a sore wrist. But he's seen just 18 minutes of action during the last week, which came during Sunday's All-Star Game. The time off should be a help.

The Jazz entered the break having lost 13 of their last 17 games. Now they're in a dogfight for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Jazz aren't as good as when they opened the season 15-5, but they are better than what they've shown lately. They just needed time to regroup.

Dallas is 13-1 in its last 14 games. It remains to be seen if the long layoff has disrupted the Mavericks' timing and momentum.

This is more a play on Utah rather than a fade on Dallas. The Mavericks, however, haven't historically been a good spread team at home. That's the case again this season where they have failed to cover in 18 of their 30 home contests.
1♦ UTAH

Wisconsin is much better at home than on the road. But the Badgers still are vastly superior to Michigan, certainly enough to cover as short road chalk.

The Badgers are a No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the Big Dance, while the Wolverines would be thrilled just to get selected.

Wisconsin has more experience, talent and is better coached.

The Badgers rank No. 2 in the country defensively holding foes to 57.6 points a game. They also commit the fewest turnovers and are No. 1 in free throw percentage at 82.6 percent.

Wisconsin easily cruised past Michigan, 66-50, at home on Jan. 5. Yes, Michigan has improved since then. The Wolverines are 6-2 in their last eight games, but are not close to being in the Badgers' class. The Badgers have been hot, too, capturing five of their last six games.

Wisconsin has won during its last three visits to Ann Arbor beating Michigan by an average of 15.3 points per game during this span.

Your free play is the back North Carolina on the road against NC State.

Since losing to Duke, the Tar Heels have been a little "sluggish", but have still reeled off 3 straight conference wins, and they have already dismantled State once already this season, beating the Wolfpack by 20 at the end of January in Chapel Hill.

UNC has won the last 9 in this series straight up, and they have also covered the last 3, and 6 of the last 7 overall conference showdowns with their in-state rival.

NC State has lost 5 of their last 7 straight up, and against the spread at home this year are only 4-5 in lined games.

Just not getting enough value on the home dog in this one, I suggest going with the road favorite to improve upon their series winning streak numbers tonight.

North Carolina the call from the G-Man minus the number.

Now to my free winner - I know their last two wins were over the Kings and Clippers, who in no way compare to the Spurs, but Oklahoma City’s offense has been so sharp and looked so good on Tuesday, I’m more than willing to grab the points with the Thunder in San Antonio tonight.

This team is so young and their legs have no problem coming back on the second night of a back-to-back. They are 6-4 ATS on the second night of a back-to-back and they are on ATS surges of 16-5 as an underdog of 5 to 10 ½ points and 5-1 when they face Southwest Division teams.

In this rivalry, the road team is on a 6-2 ATS run and the pup has cashed in seven of the last 10. Oklahoma City has put up more than 108 points a game over their last five and I’m expecting another big performance tonight. Grab the points with the Thunder.

Tuesday's Action
20 Dime college basketball seleation on Oklahoma plus the points at Texas A&M in Big 12 action. The Sooners are ranging from a 12½- to a 13-point road underdog both here in Vegas and offshoere. As always, shop around and get the best of the number to increase your odds of winning.

10 Dime college bashetball selection on Creighton plus the points at Wichita State. The Bluejays are a consensus 11-point underdog both here in Vegas and offshore, though I do see a couple of spots in Vegas where the number is as low as 10½.

ANALYSIS

I’m fully aware that Oklahoma has been a complete and total disaster away from home this season, losing 11 of 12 road/neutral-site contests while going just 4-7 ATS in true road games.

I’m fully aware that Oklahoma comes into this game having lost five in a row (2-3 ATS), including back-to-back double-digit road losses at Missouri (84-61 as a 15½-point underdog) and Kansas State (77-62 as a 14½-point underdog). In fact, I backed K-State in that game on Saturday and cashed a 15 Dimer.

And I’m fully aware that Texas A&M has won four in a row overall (with three of those victories coming on the road) and three in a row against the Sooners (including a 69-51 pasting at Oklahoma on Jan. 8, the Big 12 opener for both schools).

So I’m sure you’re wondaring: “Why on God’s green earth would you risk your five-game Big 12 winning streak on Oklahoma tonight?” Answer: Because this pointspread is reflective of all the facts I just pointed out – meaning the oddsmakers have inflated the number – and because Texas A&M simply cannot be trusted to cover this big of a number against anyone.

To that second point, consider that since opening confereence play with blowout wins over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (71-48), the Aggies are 6-4 SU and 3-7 ATS. Two of their losses were at home to Texas (69-49) and Baylor (76-74 in overtime), while their six victories were as follows: 91-89 overtime win over Missouri; 64-56 win over Kansas State; 73-70 overtime win over Colorado; 70-67 win over Texas Tech; 71-66 win over Iowa State; 67-66 win over Oklahoma State.

That’s six wins (including two in overtime) by a total of 20 points. And tonight, A&M – which hasn’t won a game by more than eight points in the last five weeks and is 1-4 ATS in its last five home games – is laying 12½ to 13 points. Ridiculous.

Oklahoma has been very competitive in recent trips to College Station, losing by scores of 65-62 last year (but cashing as a 7½-point underdog), 60-52 in 2008 and 70-61 in 2007. And in 2009, the Blake Griffin-led Sooners beat the Aggies on their home court 69-63. In fact, OU has cashed in six of its last seven at Texas A&M (and the road team is on a 5-0 ATS run in this series).

One final point to make with respect to this pointspread: With the exchption of the 91-89 overtime game against Missouri (which doesn’t play defense), Texas A&M hasn’t scored more than 74 points in a Big 12 game all season. And if you eliminate the Missouri result, the Aggies are averaging just 65 ppg in conference play. Assuming they hit that average tonight, to cover this spread, they’ll have to hold Oklahoma to 52 points. Well, the Sooners are averaging 68.1 ppg over their last nine, with a low of exactly 52 against Texas (which is far and away the best defensive team in the Big 12).

Too many points here, guys. Take the oddsmakers generosity and watch the visiting Sooners keep this one within six points.

ANALYSIS

Love Wichita State … when it plays on the road. The Shockers have won nine straight on the highway while going 7-0-1 ATS in their eight Missouri Valley Conference road games (including a 68-54 rout at Creighton as a three-point favorite). At home, though, Wichita is a totally different team.

Wichita State has dropped two in a row in its building (Friday’s 68-67 Bracket Buster loss to VCU as a nine-point home favorite, preceded by a shocking 56-53 loss to Southern Illinois as a 15½-point chalk), and the Shockers are just 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games.

Meanwhile, Creighton won its first two conference road games but has lost its last five in a row. However, those five losses were by margins of 6 (overtime), 5, 2, 1, 5, 8 and 3 points. Also, the Bluejays are 6-2 ATS when visiting Missouri Valley foes and 5-2 ATS as a conference underdog. Even better, Creighton is on ATS runs of 12-5 in all conference games, 10-4 in all road games, 6-1 as a road underdog, 6-1 following a SU loss (the Bluejays are coming off Saturday’s XX Bracket Buster loss at Akron) and 5-1 on Wednesdays.

And even thought Wichita State got a win at Creighton last month to improve to 4-0-1 ATS in this rivalry, the Bluejays are still 5-2 ATS in their last seven trips to Wichita and the road team is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

Finally, don’t ignore the look-ahead factor here, as the Shockers travel to Missouri State on Saturday in a game that will determine the regular-season MVC champ. So ask yourself this: Do you trust a team that has struggled recently to cover numbers at home to win by double digits when its biggest game of the year is up next? I sure don’t.

The Gardens will be a mad house tonight, as all eyes will be on the new-look Knicks and their savior Carmelo Anthony. The networks are still celebrating. Thing is, the Knicks still gave up a lot and there is going to be am adjustment period and that you can count on. Yes, Melo is one of the best, bar none but it’s been a crazy 48 hours for him and everybody else and this is not the time to be spotting seven points. We also like the fact that the Bucks played last night. They have a game under their belt after the break and the Knicks always bring out the best in them. Milwaukee has won four straight meetings with New York, eight of nine in the series overall, and four consecutive visits to MSG. The Bucks haven’t lost a road game to the Knicks since 2007. So, what we have here is a overpriced Knicks team that everyone is looking to bet against a Bucks team is getting seven points and that’s rock solid defensively. Play: Milwaukee +7 (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

Washington +9½ over PHILADELPHIA

Once again we turn our attentions to a team that played last night against a team that has been off for almost a full week. It’s difficult to get back into the swing of things and it could be especially difficult for a 76er team that was on a roll before the break. Philly had a great week before the break by winning three of four and knocking off the then 45-9 Spurs. These two hooked up on Jan 5 in Philly and the 76ers won by 12. That’s was under much better conditions than this for the home side and it’s also worth noting that Washington had won the previous five games against Philly straight up. This is another good spot for them and it wouldn’t surprise us one bit to see an upset. Play: Washington +9½ (Risking 2.06 units to win 2).

Game: Los Angeles Clippers at New Orleans (9:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: Los Angeles Clippers +7 (-110)

The LA Clippers opened the season at 1-13 and were off to another disasterous season. They have improved tremendously since the first 16 games as they have since been 20-23 and an even better 16-15 in their last 31. New Orleans has defined its season with a pair of hot stretches where they won eight and ten games in a row. Take those streaks out of the equation and the Hornets are just 15-25. Right now they are playing as poor as they have all season at 2-9 over their last 11. What we are left with is a team well over .500 that is not really that good and a team that is 15 games under .500 that is over the .500 mark in their last 31 getting a bundle of points.
I'll ride LA in this one.
