I have a long history of losing parlays. It's a shitty feeling to know that you could've made SOME money by doing a straight bet, but instead you lose because you tried to group it all together.

Conventional wisdom is that parlays are sucker bets. In my case that seems to be true.

But if I usually make a parlay it's a lottery parlay for the hell of it and rarely some serious shit where I put down serious money.

Parlays neither increase or decrease your odds in most cases (some books do make you pay a small price for honor of parlaying, but it is nominal). But they can be bad because you end up overbetting your bankroll and they increase volatility. The last bet in the parlay is usually a lot bigger than it ought to be... For example if you bet 5u on the GSP/Aldo/Machida parlay... by the time it gets to GSP, you are really betting 8u on GSP to win 2u. That is the bet you made. So it isn't magic money, you are risking more money, which also increases your chances of losing more. So your bankroll will be more volatile... on one hand, it can help you if it is volatile in the positive, but you can go back down just as quickly. I have cleared 30u in the last few months betting these parlays, but I can easily wipe that out in 1 or 2 events. It is just bigger bets, that's it. Nothing magic about it (that's why I call it the magic parlay- for the irony).

But I have come to realize that the psychology is just as important as money management and actual capping skill. You have to find something that works for you that you can stick to. But I generally agree with SPX, you have to be very careful with the parlays, because you will wipe yourself out quick. I can't tell you how many people have come in here with a 30% return per month, then we never see them again. If you want to win, you have to stay in the game.

Like, I said, I think the psychology of only having to pull the trigger once helps me make the bet I want to make. I just try to think of it as all one bet and then total up the odds. I don't think that is wrong either. We just have to be aware of precisely the risk we take with a parlay. As long as you keep it relative to your bankroll, there is nothing wrong with it. It is no different at all mathmatically than a straight bet. For example the GSP/Aldo/Machida bet that a lot of have made... that is an underdog bet. As long as you bet it like you would any other + odds bet, you are fine. But if you bet 5u on it... that is pretty damn aggressive. It still hase a 50% chance of hitting, but under normal circumstances, most of us would not put 5u on a + odds bet. Same thing with my magic parlays... I try to get them under -400 total... each thing individually, might be -2500... but the fact remains that when combined it is supposed to fail 20% of the time, and you have to size your bets accordingly.

At first I thought his wrestling was amazing but then I realized he has only really stuffed Tito and -300 isn't worth it. Ellenberger at -200 is semi risky as well. I might try a Aldo/GSP/EB/Machida parlay depending on the odds for 1u or so.

I am sure it is not precisely even, but if it was too far out of whack, the line would drop dramatically. GSP's line has actually improved, so I think that indicates that there is plenty of money on both sides. Over on SD, like half of the people are picking Shields straight up (in the grappling forum). I don't think our forum is a good barometer of what people are betting... we tend to bet the same things a lot, either because we are just that smart, or because we follow each other. I know I was not on GSP but ended up being sold on the 3fight parlay by everyone here.

I'm sure there is adequate action on Shields. GSP's line has fluctuated and is still far lower on some books than he opened at.

I also don't buy that Oddessa is shilling for Shields. He's always on Junkie radio picking fights with the guys and he always sounds genuine to me. And most of the time the fights he highly recommends win. Rashad over Rampage comes to mind.

But mostly, I highly doubt the small amount of people who listen to Joey Oddessa or even know who he is are the ones the books are worried about.

I don't care, personally, because I don't think of the tracker as a competition, I just think it is a nice way to see how everyone is doing and to an idea of how everyone's bankroll fluctuates... it is also nice to know who is hot atm.

FTR, I totally believe you and Edman did say he had like 10 parlays all including GSP at some point... I believe him also. But I also have no idea how much you have actually won or lost over the last 5 months.

I seriously do post all my wiseman specials. I think there are like three parlays I didn't post because they were multiple events and $1 (0.05u) each. I always post them because if one actually hits I would like everybody to think I am a genius because I'd be up 1,000 units. If you look back at the other bets threads, you will see plenty of my $1 wiseman specials being posted. And the parlay I posted with the screen shot wasn't really a Wiseman special, I think it was only a 1.2u winner. I honestly don't even remember making this parlay, because it wasn't in my spreadsheet. I was looking at my wager results page on 5dimes last night and saw it and noticed it wasn't even in my spreadsheet. BUT that being said, I really don't care if it's tracked or not, I was just throwing it out there with the screen shot so I didn't get any "yeah rights" when I mentioned it. I have all my bets tracked on a spreadsheet and figured I'd just post that since Zak said to post my Garza sub of night bet. And for the record, that was my only "award winner" prop bet of the night, I didn't bet on like 5 of them and just hope one hit. ::handshake::

Actually this is the first time I haven't posted a play before. I actually didn't add a play before the strikeforce event with Gegard/Jardine in which I won 1u though I think Zak might have tallied it up. I don't post my micro bets... basically stuff I am just testing. I don't really think of it as part of my bankroll, more like my R&D fund. Also, when I hedge out of a bet, I just don't post it. Like on the Ellenberger/Pierson, I actually netted a small profit- but I just don't want to trouble Zak with the minutia of my nimble arbitrage stylings.

I have posted several mini-wiseman's that actually hit in the event threads, and just never posted them in the bets threads because I was just messing around... I guess I delineate between my "real" bets and the stuff I do for fun. Like the SPX lottery parlay I posted with your dollar... I don't put things like that in the tracker and I don't expect it to count should it hit.

You can get -550 ish on Manny in the prop section of 5dimes .Mosley is too old to beat Manny. 10 years ago this might have been a good fight but not now . Manny is too fast ,throws too many punches, uses good angles and will never stop.Manny will just keep throwing lighting fast punches until Mosley gets tired of getting hit and goes in to defensive mode . Mosley should be game in the first couple rounds just because of his own speed but by round 6 the only question of the fight will be whether Shane can make it to the final bell or not . Mosley's one and one shot to win is to land a big shot in the first few rounds and end it early ,if it goes past 4 rounds Mosley has no chance imo.
