Miami (Ohio) at Temple: What Bettors Need To Know

Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Temple Owls (-12.5, 42.5)

When it comes to weekday football, the Mid-American Conference is where it’s at. The MAC is in the spotlight Wednesday when the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks visit the City of Brotherly Love to face the Temple Owls.

The Red-hawks won the most recent meeting between the schools, dropping the Owls 23-3 in Fred Yager Stadium last November. Temple has won three of the five all-time meetings straight up but is just 2-3 against the spread.

LINE MOVES

Temple opened as high as a two-touchdown favorite but has since been bet down to -12.5. The total opened around 42.5 points.

WEATHER

For November night football, it doesn’t get much better than Wednesday’s forecast. The temperature at Lincoln Financial Field will be in the mid 50s with a slight 4-mph breeze blowing ESE from corner to corner. There is an 18 percent chance of rain later in the evening.

UPS AND DOWNS

Temple took on some stiff competition to start the schedule, but appeared to be the team to beat when conference play began. The Owls, however, have dropped back-to-back games and sit 3-3 in MAC play heading into Wednesday.

Miami (Ohio), on the other hand, has won two games in a row and four of its last five, posting a profitable 4-1 ATS mark in that span. The RedHawks rolled over the basement on the MAC East, taking down Buffalo and Akron the past two weeks.

"We are at home against an outstanding Miami team," Owls head coach Steve Addazio told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "They are averaging 22 points per game. They are second in the MAC in passing offense (271.1 yards per game). Their quarterback (Zack Dysert) is a heck of a player."

Dysert has been picking up steam heading into this contest. He’s completed almost 72 percent of his passes and thrown for seven touchdowns and just one interception during Miami’s two-game streak. He’s also been a weapon on the ground, rushing for 32 yards and a score in the win over Akron.

Dysert ranks fourth among non-seniors with 7,381 career passing yards, trailing OU's Landry Jones, BU's Robert Griffin III, and USC's Matt Barkley.

"We have our work cut out for us," Addazio said. "We are here at 5-4 right now. We hope we are an edgy football team."

PIERCE BY PIECE

Most programs would be pushing the panic button after losing the conference’s top running back to injury. But not Temple.

The Owls are playing the waiting game when it comes to Bernard Pierce’s head injury (questionable), suffered against the Ohio Bobcats last Wednesday. Pierce has also been slowed by a leg injury this season, but his replacement Matt Brown is just as explosive.

Brown, a junior, is ninth in the MAC in rushing, totaling 577 yards on 99 carries – an average of 5.83 yards per attempt. He’s found the end zone twice this season and could get the lion’s share of the rushing game if Pierce is unable to play.

"Hey, if you are going to tote the ball, and you are going to run a power run game, and you are going to carry the ball 20 to 25 times a game, you are going to get whacked by a high velocity by a lot of people,” Addazio told reporters about Pierce and other injuries on the Owls roster.

Quarterback Chris Coyer, who took over as Temple’s No. 1 QB after a solid performance off the bench in the loss to the Bobcats, also picks up the slack in the rushing game. Coyer rushed for a team-high 184 yards, to go along with 123 yards and three passing touchdowns.

“They threw me in there and I knew I was gonna play some throughout the game - I didn’t know I was gonna play that much,” Coyer told the media. “But I felt ready and I felt prepared and we went with it and I felt great.”

TRENDS

* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Redhawks are 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games.
* Owls are 1-4 ATS in their last five games in November.

Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Temple Owls (-12.5, 42.5)

The college football point-spread in this game opened with the Temple Owls as 11.5 point favorites. That line was pushed up by the early betting money coming in on the Owls. With 60% of the early money backing up the Owls are as high as 13 point favorites in some offshore sportsbook locations.

Miami is off a dominating win against Akron. The defense took down the Zips and controlled the game from the start and only allowed 200 yards of offense. Quarterback Zac Dysert was nearly flawless as he skewered the Zips putting up two touchdowns. The Redhawks will need him to be perfect again when they face considerably tougher defense.

Temple’s defense looked less than intimidating against Ohio in their last outing. The Owls could not keep it together and lost what could be a very crucial game. The Owls did look good on offense, as Chris Coyer and Bernard Pierce piled up yards rushing the ball. Now the Owls will need to rebound after a loss, if they hope to stay on the path for a title.

The college football sports betting trends favor the road team in this contest. The underdog is 4-0 against the spread (ATS) in the last four meetings, which is an indication that these games have a history of playing close games. The Redhawks are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a win and 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.

The Owls are 1-4 ATS in their last five games in November and will have trouble covering double digits in this game. Ohio showed the Redhawks how to beat Temple and this game will come down to the wire and taking the points is the way to go.

PICK: Miami (Ohio) +13

Duquesne-Arizona Preview

Duquesne Dukes at No. 16 Arizona Wildcats (-9, 148.5)

Having lost an All-American as well as his second-leading scorer, Arizona coach Sean Miller knows it might take a little time before his team begins living up to its potential.

Fortunately for the 16th-ranked Wildcats, they will get a couple more opportunities to improve before heading off to New York later this month to finish the 2K Sports Classic, including a home game against Duquesne on Wednesday night.

Arizona lost conference player of the year Derrick Williams to the NBA draft, where he was selected No. 2 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Sophomore guard Lamont Jones also transferred to Iona in May to be closer to his family.

Miller brought in four highly touted freshmen, but his remaining players all averaged 8.1 points or fewer in 2010-11. That transition has led to some rocky efforts, including an exhibition loss to Division II Seattle Pacific.

During their season opener Monday night, the Wildcats led Valparaiso by just two at halftime before going on a 16-3 run. They also allowed the Crusaders to cut a 20-point lead to nine in the final 2:38 of a 73-64 victory.

"We're not the 16th-ranked team in the country," Miller said. "Maybe at some point we can get to that spot, but we still have a ways to go."

Seniors Kyle Fogg and Jesse Perry will try to aid the Wildcats' progress by building on their solid season debuts.

Fogg scored 16 points Monday while making five of seven shots and six of eight attempts from the free-throw line. Perry recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Nick Johnson chipped in 14 points and six assists off the bench in his collegiate debut.

"I think we played a great game until the last four minutes. This falls on the leaders of the team, and we have to work on this," Fogg said. "We will play better on Wednesday."

During this 2K Sports Classic game, the Wildcats will face a Dukes team that's making its season debut.

Arizona will wrap up play in the tournament with two games at Madison Square Garden from Nov. 17-18. Before leaving for New York, the Wildcats will face Ball State on Sunday, a game that's not part of the Classic.

"These early games give us the opportunity to learn," Miller said.

Duquesne, picked to finish ninth in the 14-team Atlantic 10, is also seeking to replace its top two scorers.

The Dukes are hoping last year's conference freshman of the year T.J. McConnell can help carry some of that burden. The guard was the nation's only freshman with more than 300 points, 125 assists and 75 steals in 2010-11.

Arizona is facing Duquesne for the first time since scoring a school-record 133 points in the first round of the 1987 Great Alaska Shootout. The Wildcats lost in their first three meetings with the Dukes from 1948-51.

Liberty Flames at No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies (-18.5, N/A)

The Aggies are going to have to deal with an unexpected speed bump early this season as they deal with being one of the Big 12’s favorites.

After Billy Kennedy was hired to man the bench back in May, he was forced to take a leave of absence to undergo treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Associate coach Glynn Cyprien will lead the club until Kennedy returns and has already addressed the hype surrounding the team.

"We addressed it on the first day for a total of about five minutes," Cyprien told reporters. "And I think these guys ... because they're a veteran team, understand it's not where you start but it's where you finish. And it hasn't come up again."

Junior Khris Middleton is one of three returning starters and 10 lettermen on the team and could be poised for even bigger things after averaging 14.4 points and 5.2 rebounds last season.

These Aggies will come out with a bang.

PICK: Texas A&M

Duquesne Dukes at No. 16 Arizona Wildcats (-9, 148.5)

The Arizona Wildcats may have some problems getting on track.

They lost Derrick Williams to the NBA when he went No. 2 overall to Minnesota and sophomore guard Lamont Jones transferred to Iona. The Wildcats struggled early in their first game of the year and headed into the half against Valparaiso with just a two-point lead.

They ended up rallying for a 73-64 victory, but couldn’t cover as 14.5-point favorites.

"We're not the 16th-ranked team in the country," Arizona coach Sean Miller told reporters. "Maybe at some point we can get to that spot, but we still have a ways to go. These early games give us the opportunity to learn."

We’ll take the coach at his word even though Duquesne is looking to replace its top two scorers from last season.

PICK: Duquesne

Rangers Hope To Continue Road Success vs. Senators
By Brian Hunter

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (+110, 5.5)
RANGERS (7-3-3) at SENATORS (7-7-1)

TV: TSN, RDS (HD), MSG

LAST 10: New York 7-2-1; Ottawa 6-3-1

SEASON SERIES: Second of four meetings. The teams faced off 11 days earlier at Madison Square Garden in New York, where Milan Michalek scored twice during the Senators' three-goal, third-period rally, then added the decisive shootout tally to key a 5-4 victory.

BIG STORY: The fortunes of both teams have shifted since that initial matchup. Ottawa extended its winning streak to five games by beating New York and ran it to six, but has gone 0-2-1 since. The Blueshirts, on the other hand, recovered from blowing that big lead to the Senators by taking the final four games of a six-game homestand. Now they begin a stretch in which they play five of six on the road.

TEAM SCOPE:

RANGERS: During its current winning streak, New York has outscored its opponents 15-6 -- that includes a shutout performance by backup goalie Martin Biron and a two-goal outing from Marian Gaborik in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Winnipeg. Not to be overlooked in that game was the play of second-year forward Derek Stepan, whose second-period power-play goal was all Biron was need. Stepan then set up Gaborik's insurance goal in the third and Gaborik added an empty-netter for good measure. Biron's last shutout had been Oct. 31, 2009, for the Islanders.

"I used to play it down, but not anymore," Biron said. "They're hard to come by in this League so when you have one, you have to enjoy it very much."

SENATORS: During its 1-5-0 start to the season, Ottawa dropped games 7-1 to Colorado and 7-2 to Philadelphia. The Senators haven't been getting blown out during their slow start to November, losing three games by a combined four goals, but they still want to get back on the winning side. They took the Sabres into a shootout on Saturday and got goals from Michalek and Jason Spezza in the first two rounds, but Buffalo answered each time and eventually defeated them 3-2 when Derek Roy beat Craig Anderson in the sixth round.

"I thought Andy played really well," forward Nick Foligno said. "He stopped some of their big shooters and they just seemed to be able to get that last one."

WHO'S HOT: Gaborik has 3 goals and 6 assists in the last half-dozen games for the Rangers. Stepan has 2 goals and 5 assists in his last five games. Artem Anisimov has consecutive multi-assist efforts. … Michalek scored his ninth goal of the season in the Senators' loss to the Sabres, which tied him for third in the League entering Tuesday's action.

INJURY REPORT: In the last meeting, New York forward Wojtek Wolski delivered a hit to Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson that left the latter with a concussion. Alfredsson is expected to miss a fifth straight game, while Wolski has since required sports hernia surgery that landed him on injured reserve.

Also on injured reserve for the Rangers are forward Mike Rupp (knee) and defenseman Marc Staal (concussion). … The Senators have defenseman Matt Carkner (knee) and forward Peter Regin (shoulder) on injured reserve.

STAT PACK: Lundqvist has enjoyed tremendous recent success playing in Ottawa, winning his last six starts there and posting a 1.32 goals-against average and one shutout. Anderson, meanwhile, has great career numbers against New York: 6-2-1 with a 1.95 GAA, his second-lowest mark against any opponent.

PUCK DROP: The Rangers have won five in a row overall at Scotiabank Place, outscoring the Senators 16-6 in the process. The last time Ottawa beat New York on its home ice was on Nov. 22, 2008, when Spezza had eight shots and a power-play goal in a 4-1 victory.

Wednesday's Best NHL Bets

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (+110, 5.5)

The New York Rangers had to endure an epic road trip before playing their first home game at MSG, but they made their first home stand of the season count.

The Rangers went 4-1-1 at Madison Square Garden and have won their last four contests heading into Wednesday’s date in Ottawa.

"It's hard when you go on the road for that amount of time because sometimes there's a let-down feeling that we're home and it's going to be a lot easier,” backup goalie Martin Biron said after blanking Winnipeg 3-0 Sunday. “There was none of that. It was a lot of hard work that has paid off in the end and that has to keep going."

However, the injury bug is messing with the Blueshirts’ roster. Defenseman Marc Staal is still out with a concussion, Mike Rupp is sidelined with a knee injury and Wojtek Wolski just landed on the shelf with a sports hernia.

Still, the Rangers are showing a lot more life than they did earlier this season. They’re going to be a tough team to play against as long as they keep their staple players in the lineup.

PICK: NY Rangers

Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning (-125, 5.5)

Philadelphia owns the league’s top offense, producing four goals per game while Tampa Bay sits fifth in the league averaging 3.1 goals per contest.

So if you’re a big fan of clogging the neutral zone and 1-0 final scores, this game probably isn’t for you.

Philadelphia is coming off 9-2 destruction of the Blue Jackets and has already scored at least seven goals in three different games this season.
"Things just seemed to be clicking out there," James van Riemsdyk told reporters. "I don't know, we were making good passes up and down the ice and making smart plays with the puck. When you do that, it makes the game look a lot easier out there."

The Lightning are just 3-9 on the road so they’ll be happy to get back home in front of their home fans. Seems like the over is the logical play in this one.

PICK: Over

WHO'S HOT

NCAAF: Miami (Ohio) has covered the number in four of the last five.

NCAAB: The over is 9-3 in Arizona’s last 12 overall.

NCAAB: Akron is 13-3 against the spread in its last 16.

NHL: The New York Rangers have won four straight.

WHO'S NOT

NCAAF: The over is 1-7 in Temple’s last eight.

NCAAB: The Liberty Flames are riding a 1-6 slump against the spread.

NCAAB: Duquesne is 1-8 against the spread in its last nine overall.

NHL: Tampa Bay is 1-4 in its last five home games against Philadelphia.

KEY STAT

12.8 – The Temple Owls rank fourth nationally allowing only 12.8 points per game. However, they were lit up in a 35-31 loss to Ohio as a 4-point favorite in their last game.

INJURY THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVERLOOKED

Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders – McFadden has been ruled out for the second straight game and will be on the sidelines when the Raiders clash with the San Diego Chargers Thursday. McFadden suffered a sprained right foot in the first quarter against Kansas City on Oct. 23 and sat out Sunday's home loss to Denver. Michael Bush will make his second straight start. He rushed for 96 yards on 19 carries and had a touchdown catch against the Broncos. McFadden has rushed for 614 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry this season. Oakland and San Diego are in a three-way tie with Kansas CIty for first place in the AFC West with 4-4 records. The Raiders are set as 7-point underdogs at San Diego.

GAME OF THE DAY

Miami (Ohio) at Temple (-13, 44)

NOTABLE QUOTABLE

“The ability to spread ‘em out and run spread-option football...that’s not something I was able to come right in here and do because that’s not what was in place here. I wanted to take advantage of the best abilities I had at Temple when I got here, and right now we’re trying to gradually move it. Where we are is what I like--but ultimately what I like is doing what our team does best.” – Temple coach Steve Addazio on what he was looking for by naming former backup Chris Coyer his starting quarterback. Coyer played most of Temple’s 35-31 loss to Ohio last week and gets the call for Wednesday’s matchup with Miami (Ohio). The Owls are set as 13-point favorites at home.

TIPS AND NOTES

Penn State opened as a 3-point underdog for this weekend’s game against Nebraska before news of the sexual abuse scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Now as speculation continues to grow that Joe Paterno has coached his last game, many books have taken the line off the board. As of Tuesday evening, a number of shops still had the line on the board, but had Penn State at +3.5. Penn State officials elected to cancel Paterno's weekly press conference Tuesday, but reports claimed he did speak with a gathering of people at his home later in the evening.

The pointspread for Wednesday’s Miami (Ohio)-Temple matchup is on the move. Temple opened around -12.5 at most books before dropping to as low as -11 earlier this week. However, that line is on its way back up at most shops and sat around -13 as of Tuesday evening. About 55 percent of Covers.com Consensus bettors are backing Temple.

The Philadelphia Flyers could get a major boost if captain Chris Pronger is able to return to the lineup Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. Pronger has been on the shelf since taking a high stick to the eye on Oct. 24. Pronger has participated in all aspects of Philadelphia’s practices over the past couple days but said he will likely wait until Wednesday’s morning skate to decide his status. Philadelphia is set at -105 at Tampa Bay.

SPORTS WAGERS

Philadelphia +107 over TAMPA BAY

After a slow start, the Lightning have really picked things up with six wins in their past eight games to move a couple of games over .500. However, this is a risky favorite because of their poor defense and unreliable goaltending. When you look at the defense pairings for the Bolts (Matt Gilroy and Eric Brewer, Pavel Kubina and Brett Clark and finally Bruno Gervais and Marc-Andre Bergeron) and compare it to that of the Flyers (Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn, Andreas Lilja and Andrej Meszaros and Matt Carl and Erik Gustafsson), it’s like comparing Jennifer Lopez to Rosie O’Donnell. There’s a good chance that Chris Pronger returns tonight and his replacement, Erik Gustafsson has played so well that he might stick around and knock Andreas Lilja out of the sixth spot. The Lightning continue to give up as many quality scoring chances as anyone and these Flyers can convert those chances. In fact, in three of its last 10 games, Philadelphia has scored seven goals or more and we haven’t seen outputs like that since Wayne Gretzky wore an Oilers jersey. Play: Philadelphia +107 (Risking 2 units).

OTTAWA +104 over N.Y. Rangers

The Rangers are hot with four consecutive wins but a closer look reveals that they beat a San Jose team playing its last game of a seven game trip, a reeling Ducks team and a pair of wins over Montreal and Winnipeg. The Rangers are a grinding team that tries to physically wear down their opponents and that makes them tough to play against. However, the Senators always play them well, Ottawa is at home and they’ve already defeated them once this year in New York after being down 4-1 in the third period. The Sens had won six straight before losing their last three in a row. One of those losses was in Boston and the other two were at home against Montreal, 2-1 and against Buffalo, 3-2 in a shootout. Against the Habs, they ran into a hot Carey Price. The Sens are still playing well and that six-game winning streak was no fluke. They play hard and they play to win and they surely offer up some good value as a home pooch against the offensively challenged Rangers. Play: Ottawa +104 (Risking 2 units).

Nashville +102 over ANHAEIM

As the chalk in a horrible situational spot, the Ducks offer up very little. Anaheim returns home from a grueling seven game road trip with just one win. They’ve won just once in its past nine overall and the blueprint for beating this team has been established. You shut down the Ducks top line and they virtually have little chance of success because they have no depth. The Ducks have had a paltry 22 shots on net or less in five of their last six games. It’s also worth noting that the Predators have that blueprint, as they beat the Ducks 3-0 10 days ago and they knocked them out of last year’s playoffs. Nashville is coming off a 4-3 loss to the Kings last night but they were not outplayed. Prior to that they had won four of five and they’ve also scored three goals or more in six straight. The Preds wrap up a five game trip here and they’re going to give it everything they have, just like they do every time they step on the ice. Play: Nashville +102 (Risking 2 units).

NHL PREDICTIONS

1 UNIT* NHL* Nashville Predators @ Anaheim Ducks: NASHVILLE PREDATORS TO WIN (+111)
(Note: I'm risking 1 unit to win 1.11 units)
The Predators are coming off a 4-3 loss last night in Los Angeles, which comes after previously winning 4 of their last 5 games. Tonight's game in Anaheim is their 5th and final game of their road trip and the Predators look to finish it off 3-2 with a win tonight. Nashville is 7-5-2 on the season. Anaheim returns home after a brutal 7 game road trip where they went just 1-6. The Ducks have lost 5 straight games, and 8 of their last 9, making them 5-6-3 on the year. On the season the Ducks are averaging just 1.9 goals per game, while allowing 2.71 goals against per game. Nashville has enjoyed 6 straight games of scoring 3 or more goals, and has increased their goals per game to 2.7 coming into tonight. With the night off last night Pekka Rinne should be between the pipes tonight. He is 7-4-2 with a 2.33 GAA and .929 SV %. Lifetime against the Ducks Rinne has enjoyed a lot of succes, with a 7-2-2 record and 1.95 GAA. The Predators will most likely be without David Legwand, but should get Sergei Kostitsyn back tonight. In net for the Ducks will most likely be Jonas Hiller, who is just 4-5-3 with a 2.85 GAA and .902 SV% on the season. In their last 5 games the Ducks are averaging 3.40 goals against, while only scoring 1.20 goals per game. Coming off of a long road trip is hard enough for a team, but coming off a road trip as bad as the Ducks went through will be even tougher to get up for tonight's game. One of those games on Anaheim's road trip was against Nashville, who they lost to 3-0. Nashville has taken 7 of these two teams last 9 meetings, which includes the first round series win in last years postseason. The Ducks are in a bad spot for tonight's game and I look for Nashville to continue their succes against Anaheim with Rinne leading the way with another solid outing against the Ducks. Take the Preds as a very live underdog.
