Week 12 NCAA Trends & Angles

Our feature angle last week was a winning one as Stanford finally failed to cover a spread after beginning the year 9-0 ATS, as the Cardinal got upset outright by Oregon.
That means that it is Oregon that has now won nine straight games straight up since an opening week loss to top ranked LSU, so it is now the Ducks that have an outside chance of reaching the BCS National Championship Game, although they need a lot of help.
Regardless, the Ducks are home hosting USC this week, which makes them one of two teams to fit this week's feature angle.

Play on any conference home team that has won at least nine straight games straight up (53-35-4, 60.2% ATS since 1990): You usually have to be a special team to win nine straight games, and confining this angle to conference games ensures that the streaking teams are still facing teams at their same level that they are familiar with. We had to go all the way back to 1990 for this one to find a decent enough sample size to recommend it. Yes, this angle is 0-1 this season with the Stanford loss in Week 11, but it has a nice chance to bounce back with two qualifiers in Week 12: Oregon -15½ and Houston -19½.

Bet against any conference home favorite coming off of 2 home games (91-65-7, 58.3% ATS since 2005): Some may think that playing a third straight home game is an advantage, and while that may be true on the field, it has not been at the betting windows as books are aware that these teams have an advantage and bettors like to bet on them, so they are able to pad these lines. Also, if the third straight home game is a conference game, the home team is usually facing a team that is familiar with them. There are three qualifying plays for Week 12: UNLV +23½ at Air Force, Mississippi State +13 at Arkansas and Kentucky +30½ at Georgia.

Play against any team that has won seven or more games in a row ATS (43-27-2, 61.4% ATS since 1985): Teams that are covering machines like this are very popular among bettors, but as you might expect, the bookmakers eventually adjust for these popular teams to the point where they lose their value. It took a while for that to happen with Stanford, but it finally did as Oregon won as the only qualifier under this angle in Week 11. There is one more qualifier in Week 12, that being North Texas +3 vs. a Western Kentucky team that has now covered seven straight after covering vs. top ranked LSU last week.

Play the 'under' if a team has lost at least six straight games straight up (139-96, 59.9% since 2005): We are not sure about the reasoning behind this phenomenon, but there appears to be a direct relationship in college football between long losing streaks and going 'under' in the next game. There are six qualifying 'unders' this week: Akron at Buffalo, Florida Atlantic at Troy, Indiana at Michigan State, Kansas at Texas A&M, Maryland at Wake Forest and Tulane at Rice.

Play the 'under' if a team has lost at least seven straight games straight up (86-55, 61.0% since 2005): Add a seventh straight loss to the previous angle and the 'under' percentage jumps to 61 percent over 141 trials. There are four qualifiers from the previous angle that qualify here those being the 'under' in games involving Florida Atlantic, Indiana, Kansas and Tulane.

Play on any divisional road underdog coming off of a road game (117-85-2, 57.9% ATS since 2005): This one is also very similar to an NFL angle that we often referenced, as books have been over-adjusting against teams playing their second straight road game, especially when the second game is against a divisional opponent that they are very familiar with. This angle went 1-0-1 in Week 11, winning with Oregon and pushing with Duke. There are four big qualifiers for Week 12: Arizona +10½, Kentucky +30½, Maryland +10½ and Nebraska +3½.

James Madison Dukes at La Salle Explorers (-2.5, 148)

James Madison returned four starters from last year’s 21-12 squad that appeared in the CBI post-season tourney.

The Dukes, picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association, opened with an 82-73 win over Canisius. Senior guard Humpty Hitchens poured in a career-high 26 points and junior guard A.J. Davis, a transfer from Wyoming, scored 23.

Senior forward Julius Wells, who had 13 points and five boards, is the Colonial’s career points leader. Even with guard Devon Moore (11.4 ppg, 4.2 apg last season) sidelined until mid-December, scoring is not a problem.

The Explorers (1-1) are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Philadelphia rival Villanova. They’re picked to finish 13th in the 14-team Atlantic 10.

The road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Pick: James Madison

Charleston Cougars at Clemson Tigers (-11.5, 131)

Clemson, picked to finish seventh in the ACC, held its first two opponents to 31 percent shooting or less with relentless defense. The Tigers (2-0) won by an average of 22 points.

Senior guard Andre Young is averaging 13.5 points and 3.0 assists, leading a team that starts four upper-classmen. Young has drained at least one 3-pointer in 36 of the last 37 games.

Coach Brad Brownell has done a great job in just over a season at the helm, guiding the Tigers to a 24-12 mark.

Charleston, picked to finish second in the SoCon’s South Division, is gunning for its first 3-0 start since 2002-03. But coach Bobby Cremins’ squad was routed 94-55 in their last visit to Littlejohn Coliseum in 2009. Clemson won this matchup at home, 66-59, last season.

The Cougars start two sophomores and a freshman. One of the sophomores, Jordan Scott, nailed 5 of 7 three-pointers in Charleston’s 72-57 win over Morehead State.

But this team is too inexperienced to hang with the Tigers on the road.

Pick: Clemson

Saturday's betting tips: Clemson might hold out star WR

Who’s hot

NCAAF: Maryland is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games against Wake Forest.

NCAAF: The under is 6-1 in Rutgers’ last seven games.

NCAAB: Vanderbilt is 12-5 ATS in its last 17 non-conference games.

NCAAB: UTEP is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 games against WAC teams.

NHL: The over is 7-1-1 in Columbus’ last nine road games.

Who's not

NCAAF: Tennessee is 0-6 ATS in its last six games as a home underdog.

NCAAF: UCLA is 4-14 ATS in its last 18 games.

NCAAB: The over is 2-10-1 in Texas A&M’s last 13 non-conference games.

NCAAB: Delaware is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 non-conference games.

NHL: San Jose is 1-6 in its last seven games playing on one day’s rest.

Key stat

42 – Led by quarterback Robert Griffin III, Baylor has scored at least 42 points in each of its home games this season. The Bears, who entertain No. 5 Oklahoma on Saturday night, give up 40.3 points per game, however. And the Sooners average 45.4. The total for this Big 12 clash is 75.5, with Oklahoma favored by 15.5. Oklahoma is 20-0 all-time against Baylor. But the Sooners will have their hands full trying to stop Griffin, one of four QBs in NCAA history with more than 9,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jaromir Jagr, Philadelphia Flyers – Jagr did not make the trip to Winnipeg for Saturday’s game. He was forced out of Philly’s 2-1 win over Phoenix on Thursday with an undisclosed lower-body injury. Jagr played only three shifts before departing. Jagr has six goals and 17 points in his first season with the Flyers and his first NHL season after a three-year stint in Russia.

Game of the day

USC Trojans at No. 4 Oregon Ducks (-14.5, 69)

Notable quotable

"Me and Felix have a great relationship, so there definitely won't be any animosity between us. But it really doesn't matter who starts the game, it's all about just working hard throughout the game and getting the W at the end of the day." – Cowboys rookie RB DeMarco Murray, who won the starting job while Felix Jones recovered from an ankle injury. Dallas is favored by 7.5 points at reeling Washington.

Notes and tips

The Ravens expect to be without All-Pro middle linebacker Ray Lewis for the next two games due to a toe injury he suffered last week at Seattle. Lewis, 36, has started 57 straight games and leads Baltimore with 68 tackles this season. Sunday, the Ravens are 7-point home favorites over AFC North rival Cincinnati. The upstart Bengals likely will be without star WR A.J. Green, who has a knee injury.

No. 9 Clemson, which has already clinched the ACC's Coastal Division, might not use electric freshman WR Sammy Watkins (shoulder) when the Tigers visit N.C. State as 7.5-point favorites. “He will dress and we will watch him in pregame warmups and see how he is,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told CBSSports.com. “It might be a situation where he's ready and we see how we are doing. If we can hold him, we'll hold him." Watkins has caught 68 balls for 1,034 yards and 10 TDs.

With Illinois leading the Big Ten in sacks (32), look for No. 13 Wisconsin to pound the ball with RB Montee Ball. The junior leads the conference in all-purpose yards (146.2), rushing yards (124.2) and scoring (16.4). Ball has scored 27 TDs, a new conference record. The visiting Badgers are favored by 14.5, with the total set at 50.5.

Phoenix Coyotes at Buffalo Sabres (-148, 5.5)

Phoenix has mustered nine goals in its past four games, including one overtime game and another that went to the shootout. The under is 3-0-1 in that span.

But Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, who replaced Ilya Bryzgalov, has been impressive. He stopped 40 shots in a 2-1 loss at Philly on Thursday night.

''He gives us the chance to win every night and that's all you can ask from any goaltender,'' Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said.

This is a tough part of the schedule for the Sabres, who will be playing the fourth game of a 4-in-6 days situation. The under is 7-3 in Buffalo’s last 10 games in that circumstance.

The under is also 5-2-2 in the Coyotes’ last nine games playing on one day’s rest, and 11-4-2 in the last 17 Phoenix-Buffalo meetings.

Pick: Under

Pittsburgh Penguins at Florida Panthers (-116, 5.5)

Dating to last season, the Pens have won five straight over the Panthers. Most recently Pittsburgh posted a 4-2 home win over Florida on Oct. 11.

The Pens enter this one angry after going 0 for 7 on the power play in Thursday’s 4-1 loss at Tampa Bay. That included a stretch of one minute, 39 seconds with a 5-on-3 advantage. The Lightning, meanwhile, went 2 for 6 on the power play.

"Our special teams have to be even or better to win games," Penguins center Jordan Staal said. "Our [penalty-killing] faltered a bit. It just wasn't a pretty special-teams battle."

When the Pens lose by three or more goals, they usually respond. They're 39-15 in their last 54 games in that situation.

Florida had its four-game road winning streak snapped in a 4-1 loss at St. Louis on Thursday. The Panthers are just 2-2-0-3 at home this season, and 2-10 in their last 12 games against Atlantic Division foes.

Pick: Penguins

Hockey Night in Canada: Betting Preview

Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs (128, 5.5)

Similarity Central here at the Air Canada Centre. Teams that were red hot out of the box but have since cooled, square off with both hungry for a win that’s been at least a week in the making.

Troubled Toronto

There’s a still long way to go before you can call them flukes, but the Maple Leafs, once the talk of the league, have hit a dry spell. Thursday’s 4-1 loss to Nashville was their third in a row and fifth in the last six games.

Toronto has only seven points this month and hasn’t scored more than three goals in a game since Nov. 3. That’s not going to get it done.

Tough to blame anything on forward Phil Kessel, but even he’s slowed down a bit. Going pointless against the Predators snapped a four-game point streak for the Maple Leafs’ leader.

Crashing Capitals

Anyone who remembers the HBO series with the Capitals last season as coach Bruce Boudreau cursed his way through tough times, knows this team is capable of horrific slumps in the Alex Ovechkin Era. But they usually find their way out of them, especially in the regular season.

Well, they’re in one again. Thursday’s 4-1 loss at Winnipeg was the Capitals’ third in a row and fourth in the last five games. They are now under .500 on the road (4-5), and have yet to win a game on this current trip.

Ovechkin was firing blanks versus the Jets, as he landed five shots in 18:12 of ice time, only to come up empty. Ovechkin has been up and down this season, as he takes seven goals, 14 points, and a minus-3 rating into Saturday’s tilt.

Declining Dion?

Toronto defenseman Dion Phaneuf is off to a good start with two goals and 12 points, but his recent shifts have been counterproductive.

Phaneuf was a minus-3 versus Nashville, is minus-5 over his last five games, and has been a plus player just once all month.

He’s still blocking shots, with 14 this month alone, but goals are finding the back of the Maple Leafs’ net when he’s on the ice and that’s not a good sign for Toronto moving forward.

History

This is the first meeting of the season. Washington has won four of the last five in the series, and three of those games ended in a shootout. The Capitals have produced four straight unders.

Chicago Blackhawks at Edmonton Oilers (112, 5.5)

Maybe we should call them the Chicago Back-hawks, because that’s exactly where they are: Back on everyone’s radar. This should be a delightful nightcap with plenty of skill and speed on both ends of that great Edmonton ice.

Leaving no doubts this year

Chicago appears intent on not waiting until the last week of the regular season to clinch a playoff berth, like it did last year. At this rate, Chicago may clinch a spot in February.

The Blackhawks, with 27 points before Friday’s game against Calgary, were atop the Central Division and the rest of the league on the strength of four consecutive wins. They had scored 21 goals during that stretch and started a hefty six-game road swing with an impressive 5-1 victory over Vancouver on Wednesday night.

Through Thursday, both Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane belonged to the 21-point club and they had posted eight and seven goals, respectively. If that keeps up, we may be looking at another long run in the Windy City.

Leaking a little Oil

Edmonton, a tremendous early-season surprise, has dropped off a bit. The Oilers have lost four straight and have five defeats overall in November.

Their defense and goaltending, impressive in October, has been a bit off this month, as Edmonton has allowed 20 goals during this skid.

Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin still has impressive statistics -- a .937 save percentage and a 1.74 GAA. But he has lost his last three starts and doubt appears to have crept in.

Barker out

On Nov. 10, at Boston, Edmonton defenseman Cam Barker had the best game of his season. He fired six shots on net and had one block in a 6-3 loss.

Unfortunately for Barker, he won't be able to repeat that effort anytime soon.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound left-handed shot is scheduled to have ankle surgery and may miss three months. He has one goal and is a plus-3 this season.

History

Chicago has won the last three installments in this series, including a 6-3 home decision on Nov. 13. Three of the last four in this rivalry have gone under, and four of the last five Oilers’ games also have gone under.

Scott Rickenbach’s NCAAF 10* (Top Play) is OVER the total at BYU at 10:15 ET

The Bulldog’s Five Factor Analysis: 1) New Mexico State travels to BYU for a Saturday night match-up with the Cougars. This shapes up to be a high-scoring affair between two teams that have seen the over go a combined 11-0 L11 games overall. Play over the total at BYU on Saturday night. 2) BYU is averaging a solid 28 PPG on the season, but they’ve really kicked things up a notch of late. Over the team’s last four games, BYU is averaging a remarkable 41 PPG. They’ve done it with great balance, averaging 234 YPG through the air and 165 YPG on the ground. 3) Look for BYU to continue its high-scoring run at home versus an Aggies team that has a porous defense to say the least. NM State ranks 113th of 120 FBS teams in scoring defense, allowing a putrid 37 PPG. Over the team’s last four games, they’ve allowed 201 points, an average of 50.25 PPG. The Aggies won’t be able to slow down the red hot Cougars offense in this match-up. 4) Offensively, look for NM State to find the end zone several times in this match-up. While the BYU defense is solid, the Aggies have been hot of late. While they average a respectable 29 PPG on the season, note that NM State has scored 34 or more points in 3 of its last 4 games. Both teams are poised and ready to light up the score board in this match-up. 5) BYU has seen the over go 8-3 L11 games as the favorite of 10.5 or more points. NM State has seen the over go 6-0 L6 as the underdog and 4-0 as the dog in tonight’s range. Look for these trends to extend. Play over the total at BYU as a 10* Top Play Selection.

SATURDAY

Vanderbilt -1 at Tennessee: My favorite play. I tipped you on Aaron Rodgers’ little brother Jordan, who is 5-0 ATS since taking over at QB. We may have to go back to the Confederacy when Vandy was favored in Knoxville. VANDERBILT.

UNC +10½ at Va Tech: Tar Heels have had 12 days to think about being shut out at NC State. Hokies may look ahead to Virginia. UNC.

Marshall -13 at Memphis: A real stinker. No way Marshall should be favored this much having lost this season to Rice! MEMPHIS.

Minnesota +15 at N’western: The Wildcats have rallied behind new QB. A fourth straight win makes them bowl eligible. N’WESTERN.

Virginia +17 at FSU: Surging Cavaliers have won five of six and catch Seminoles in between Miami and Florida. VIRGINIA.

USC +15½ at Oregon: Barkley in Luck’s league at QB plus Trojans have the team speed Stanford lacked against the Ducks. USC.

Kansas +30½ at Texas A&M: Aggies will be thinking Texas, up next. KU has lost by 1 and 3 last two games. KANSAS.

Arizona +10½ at Arizona St. Arizona has lost last three by 11, 13 and 19. ASU angry off bitter loss at Washington State. ARIZONA ST.

UNLV +22½ at Air Force: The Falcons will have this number covered midway through second quarter. AIR FORCE.

FAU +10½ at Troy: Fla. Atlantic is 0-9 with eight losses by more than 10½. Troy has lost five in a row. It won’t be six. TROY.

NCAA Saturday

Minn +15 at N’western: The Wildcats have won and covered three straight and are looking for a bowl game as they continue their good run. NORTHWESTERN.

Wisconsin -14 at Illinois: Usually I don’t like to lay points on the road in this conference, or any in fact, but the not so Fighting Illini have gone south for the winter. Their offense is averaging just 10½ points in their last four, losing all and covering just one. WISCONSIN.

Maryland +11 at Wake: Must continue to bet against the Terrapins who have lost six straight with just one cover in that span. The Demon Deacons try for win No. 6. WAKE FOREST.

Texas Tech +17 at Missouri: The Red Raiders are another team we will keep betting against as they have really gone south after huge upset win at Oklahoma. This will be a double edge sword for Mizzu who looks for revenge from last year’s 24-17 loss in Lubbock. MISSOURI.

Colorado St. +34 at TCU: This is one of my favorite plays, very similar to the bet against LSU last week. TCU comes off the huge win at Boise. The game was originally scheduled for Fort Worth but moved to Boise when the Frogs announced they were leaving the Mountain West. That got their blood boiling. Can’t see them getting up for this game. COLORADO ST.

California +21 at Stanford: It is very difficult to regroup after your first loss this late in the season. The points are the way to go. CALIFORNIA.

BC +24½ at Notre Dame: Just don’t see the Irish covering in this game. The Eagles don’t score many, but they can play some good defense. A turnover here and there will get them the cover. BOSTON COL.

USC +15½ at Oregon: This is my favorite game of the week pitting a real good Trojans team against a real good Ducks team coming off a huge win at Stanford. USC should have beaten Stanford and will get a big shot here to avenge last year’s 53-32 drubbing in LA. USC/OVER

Boise St. -17 at San Diego St.: Boise not up to full force and, coming off first loss, will be hard pressed to get the cover here. SAN DIEGO ST.

It’s not if UNLV will lose at Colorado Springs, but by how many? We say plenty. The Rebels lost at New Mexico last week. Yes, that’s right, lost to probably the worst college football team in America. Air Force should have the 24 covered by halftime.

Rutgers (+3) for 2 Units **Cincinnati/Rutgers Noon: The Bearcats are going to have a rough time at this venue without their field general -- Zach Collaros (ankle) -- who was injured last week vs West Virginia. And the Bearcats' history as a road favorite off a SU/ATS loss doesn't bode well at 1-7 ATS.

The Scarlet Knights remember last year's 69-38 debacle in Cincinnati. We'll look for Rutgers to get revenge. Rutgers' defense has been outstanding this year -- allowing just 18.2 ppg. They'll clearly focus on stopping Cincinnati's main offensive weapon -- RB Isaiah Pead forcing inexperienced QB Munchie Legaux to beat them. Cincinnati has struggled in November at 1-8 ATS and I expect them to fall here.

New Mexico/Wyoming 2:00: I still see value with the Cowboys in this line. The Lobos are coming off a rare win at home against lightweight UNLV; however, they don't play the double digit dog role well off SU wins at 8-19 ATS.

Furthermore, Wyoming is seeking revenge from last year's 34-31 stunner in New Mexico. Today, the Cowboys get them on their home field where they're 5-0 ATS vs teams under .500 on the road. New Mexico allows an ultra pathetic 51 ppg on 558 yards per game as a traveler. Fired HC Mike Locksley left New Mexico in such a hole that Bob Davie (new head coach) will need an earth mover to dig themselves out, at least for the remaining two games.

We'll look for Dave Christensen's offense, led by accurate QB Brett Smith and a strong run game (184 yards per game) to hammer away at the 117th ranked defense in the nation. With Wyoming a sweet 6-1 ATS at home with revenge off a SU/ATS win, we'll lay the wood here.

Penn State +6.5 Over Ohio State 15 Dimes
With the caliber defense Penn State has, 6.5 points is a lot in this match-up. The Nittany Lions have one of the best defenses in the country as they allow less than 13 points per game. Expect Penn State to put a lot of pressure on Ohio State's true freshman QB Braxston Miller. Being at home, I expect the Buckeyes to win, but in a close one.
Prediction: 20-17 Ohio State

Houston -20 Over SMU 25 Dimes
The Mustangs really have their hands full this evening against undefeated Houston. The Cougars are number one in the nation in scoring at 55 points per game, and they have averaged 66 their last four contests. Meanwhile, SMU has lost three out of their last four and really have stuggled puting the ball in the endzone. Look for Houston to roll in this one.

---Start Time 12:00 PM EST---
Nebraska Cornhuskers/MICHIGAN WOLVERINES under 51.5, 20 dimes
One thing that we can be sure about both these teams is that they are going to run the ball...a lot. We can expect to see close to 100 totes between the two teams in this one. That's giving the game clock plenty of time to melt away all through the contest. The under has hit four games in the row for both Michigan and Nebraska, and I see the defenses stepping up just enough to keep the scoring under the total.

---Start Time 3:30 PM EST---
HOUSTON COUGARS -20 over Southern Methodist Mustangs, 20 dimes
The Mustangs are a team falling apart lately. They've dropped 3 out of their last four games, and all four of those games against the number. They got blasted by Southern Miss and Tulsa on the road, and now they face another high scoring machine in Houston. Committing turnovers is becoming a regular thing for this SMU squad, and I don't see that being a good thing against a Houston team that refuses to take their foot of the gas pedal. Case Keenum and the Houston Seniors are going to be playing their last home game in a very special season, and I don't think SMU has what it takes to play spoiler on the road. Look for Houston to keep their BCS chances alive.

N.C. STATE +8/+264 over Clemson SportsInteraction
3:30 PM EST. Clemson clinched the ACC Atlantic Division with last week's comeback win against Wake Forest, rendering this week's tilt at NC State more meaningful for the Wolfpack than for the Tigers. Clemson could be short-handed for this one, as the Tigers' best offensive lineman is out and superstar freshman receiver Sammy Watkins is so banged up he'll be a game-time decision. Quarterback Tajh Boyd and the Tigers have been turnover-prone lately, committing seven in the past two games to go along with a handful of near interceptions that opponents couldn't quite pull down. That's bad news against an aggressive Wolfpack outfit that leads the nation in picks. N.C. State's defense doesn't just force turnovers; it's been playing total shutdown ball lately, blanking the North Carolina Tar Heels two weeks ago and then holding the Boston College Eagles to negative total yardage in the second half of last week's loss. This defense had high expectations coming into the year, but it endured an injury-plagued first half of the season. With several of those key players back on the field, the Wolfpack are playing the best defense of the Tom O'Brien era. O'Brien's team has shown a propensity to stumble when favored but plays its best with its back against the wall. State's season is on the line Saturday since the 5-5 Pack -- having played two FCS teams this year -- must win out to earn a postseason bid. Dabo Swinney has lost three games outright as a road favorite already in his short career, and we'll happily take more than a TD at home with a decent Wolfpack bunch in a must-win spot against a Clemson team that made its bones last week. We’ll also play the Wolfpack on the money line. Play: #336 N.C State +8 (Risking 2.16 units to win 2). Play: #336 N.C State +264 (Risking 1 unit).

MICHIGAN –3½ over Nebraska PINNACLE
12:00 PM EST. The Cornhuskers played their best game of the season last week at Penn State, but we continue to be unimpressed by the current regime. Since Taylor Martinez became the starting quarterback, Nebraska has put the ball on the ground more than any other team in the nation. The defense is very coverage-oriented, built to stop Big 12 offenses but struggles with both mobile quarterbacks and solid downhill tailback attacks. Michigan neither recruited nor developed players well on defense during the Rich Rodriguez/Greg Robinson era, and this unit is under-talented by the program's usual standards. The roster contains maybe three players who could start for the defense that the Wolverines will be fielding three years from now, which makes the quick transformation that Brady Hoke and coordinator Greg Mattison have wrought all the more impressive. There haven't been many interceptions or tackles for loss, but overall there's lots to like about a Michigan defense that's really starting to come together down the stretch. The Wolves can slow a Nebraska attack that's been hit hard by injuries to key blockers, and facing Denard Robinson in practice each week is excellent preparation for what the Maize and Blue will see out of Martinez. Robinson and emerging star Fitzgerald Toussaint can keep the chains moving against the Huskers, who will be taxed by a schedule that calls for back-to-back plane trips to huge, unfamiliar stadiums after last week’s unforgettable and highly emotional tilt at Penn State. Play: #372 Michigan –3½ (Risking 2.12 units to win 2).

Penn State +6½ over OHIO STATE PINNACLE
6½-points is an enormous spot in any game with a total under 39 points, and it's way too much for a one-dimensional offense to give the Big Ten's best defensive team. The return of wideout DeVier Posey is a boost for the Buckeyes, but they'll need more than one man to cure a passing attack that hasn't managed more than 143 yards all season on a team from outside the MAC. The Nittany Lions are a different bunch of guys than they were 10 days ago. They are representing a lot more than football and the university and have been somewhat overwhelmed by all the support they’ve been given not only across the U.S. but worldwide. It was an emotional week before last week’s game against Nebraska and they should be more focused this week with a full week of preparation with new their new coaches. Expect the Lions to play their hearts out this week and perhaps pull off the upset. Play: #377 Penn State +6½ (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

California +18½ over STANFORD Sports Interaction
Sportsinteraction has the Golden Bears receiving 18½-points and we’ll play it there. If you don’t have an account with them, the recommendation is to still play Cal +17 or 17½, depending on where you do your shopping. What we do know is that the Cardinal confidence was badly shaken last week after Oregon made them look like an unranked, run of the mill football team. Oh, and when is The Big Game not actually the big game? When it's sandwiched between a season-defining loss and a home date with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This is too much wood for deflated Stanford to lay against a Cal team with a respectable defense, solid ground game and wide-outs that can exploit the Cardinal's biggest weakness, much like the Ducks did over and over and over again. Much of Stanford’s 30 points last week came when the game was out of reach and while the Golden Bears aren’t the Cardinal, they’re well balanced on both sides of the ball and with a little magic could put a big scare into Stanford. Play: #369 California (Risking 2.2 units to win 2).

ARKANSAS –13 over Mississippi St. PINNACLE
3:30 PM EST. Mississippi State is a tough out for almost everyone but this year that's all the Bulldogs are. This is a visitor that can’t move five yards against quality defenses and the Razorbacks certainly qualify. Arkansas is a rising power that's been playing its best football of the season in all three phases lately. MSU is going to have to rely on a huge defensive effort but that defense will be on the field way too long and way too often to stay within this range. The Bulldogs do not have the horses to trade blows with the Hogs for four quarters. Play: #396 Arkansas –13 (Risking 2.16 units to win 2).

NHL

Phoenix +129 over BUFFALO Pinnacle
The Sabres have won six of their last eight games but a close look reveals that those six wins came against Ottawa twice, Calgary, Montreal, Winnipeg and Carolina last night. Three of those six wins also came in OT or shootout, thus, the Sabres could be on a 3-5 streak as opposed to a 6-2 streak. In at least half of those wins, the Sabres were the second best team on the ice. One could argue that Buffalo is way off these days. This was a team that used to play with a chip on its shoulders. They always scratched and clawed and played hard. They had an “us versus the world” attitude because they were always on a very limited budget and used role players and other teams castoffs among the talent they developed within. New owner Terry Pegula stepped in late last year and insisted he would stop short of nothing to get the Sabres a championship. In the off-season, Buffalo went out and spent some money and while the team has not changed that much in terms of personnel, the attitude or work ethic has. The Sabres look beatable every night and will now play its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs after another unconvincing win last night. If you’re not 100% against the Coyotes, you’re going to get beat. Phoenix plays with heart and guts every shift of every game and they’re also in a favorable spot. The Coyotes can smell an opportunity and seize it and this is one of those opportunities. Play: Phoenix +129 (Risking 2 units).

Washington -½ +108 over TORONTO (REG) Pinnacle
Fading the Maple Leafs has been a cash cow over their past six games and there’s no reason to stop now. The Leafs are coming off a decent effort in Nashville but once again, defensive mistakes hurt them and Ron Wilson’s arrogance didn’t help. With three minutes left in the game and the Leafs down 3-1, Wilson sends out a line that consisted of Jay Rosehill, Philippe Dupuis and Dave Steckel as if to say, “If you other guys can’t score, maybe these guys can”. The general public may not be aware of these things but the other players on the bench are. Can you imagine what they’re thinking with that trio on the ice when they need goals with three minutes to go? That makeshift line has 35 career goals in 478 games played. The Leafs played hard but the coach stuck it to them again and without sounding redundant, a lackluster effort could be in the cards tonight after that lame move by Ron Wilson (he also put that same trio on the ice after the Preds scored an empty netter just to rub it in a little). Players don’t respond well to crap like that and it’s no mystery as to why the Leafs have no shot of long-term success with this clown behind the bench. The Caps have dropped three in a row and will come in here in a foul mood and ready to step up its game on Hockey Night in Canada. Leafs are becoming more and more beatable every day. Play: Washington -½ +108 (Risking 2 units).

Columbus +179 over NASHVILLE Pinnacle
At some point the Jackets are going to win a road game and with a tag like this against a team that should never be this big a favorite, the Jackets are worthy of a play. It’s not like Columbus doesn’t have talent because they do, but a slow start has snowballed and shaky goaltending has hurt them tremendously. What we do know is that a lack of quality goaltending has cost them plenty of games in which they were the far better team. Against Minnesota on Tuesday they dominated play and outshot the Wild 45-24 but still lost 4-2. In that 4-1 loss to the Leafs a few games ago they allowed just 19 shots on net, they dominated play and lost 4-1. These are just two of many examples of the Jackets strong efforts with no rewards. Last game they switched from Steve Mason to Curtis Sanford and went into Boston and lost 2-1 in OT. While it was still a loss, they got much better goaltending and Sanford starts again. The Preds are so much more appealing in the underdog role. They just aren’t good enough to be laying elite team prices and that’s precisely what they’re laying here. They’re good but they’re also beatable and offensively challenged and that makes them a huge risk laying this kind of weight. Play: Columbus +179 (Risking 2 units).

OC Dooley:

“1 UNIT” NATIONAL-TV FOOTBALL INTANGIBLE (Texas Tech +18 at Missouri in a 3:30 eastern kickoff televised regionally on ABC): Host Missouri has SIX players listed as either “questionable” or “out” ranging from running back, tight end, offensive line, defensive back and even kicker Grant Ressel who is battling a hip injury. Of course the big news exactly one week ago was Penn State taking the field on “senior day” without 46-year mentor Joe Paterno at the controls. We have yet another unusual “senior day” situation this week as Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel has been suspended following a DUI arrest back on Wednesday evening. To make matters worse Missouri in a home victory last Saturday ended up losing the services of star Henry Josey (Big 12 top rusher) to a season-ending knee injury. Despite all the negatives Missouri has still been installed as a prohibitive favorite against a reeling opponent who has lost three in a row, including a 66-6 humiliation last Saturday. Ever since pulling off a massive upset of Oklahoma on the road, it has been tough times for Texas Tech (0-3) where the offense has been able to put up just 33 combined points on the scoreboard. It is interesting to note that this week the Athletic Director of Texas Tech gave 100% support to head coach Tommy Tuberville even though the Red Raiders are coming off the worst loss in school history. Here is a 70-PERCENT SYSTEM (56-25 since 1992 with a money line between 10’-and-21 points) that plays AGAINST favorites like Missouri after allowing 14-or-less points in the prior outing, against an opponent who has suffered consecutive blowout losses of 17+ points in margin. That system works since Missouri won a low scoring 17-5 contest at home a week ago where they covered a near pick-em spread. Missouri has actually ALTERNATED “spread” wins-and-losses in SEVEN consecutive contests and they are due for an ATS setback late this afternoon

LOUISIANA TECH (+7) over Nevada
4 p.m. EST
Louisiana Tech has a great chance to win this one outright. We're catching a TD with a team that has the better defense and has won five straight games. LTU's only loss in the WAC came to Hawaii and overall their 6-4 record looks pretty good when you consider they suffered close losses to Top-25 teams Southern Miss (19-17) and undefeated Houston (35-34). Nevada's offense is clicking and its been tough at home, but Louisiana Tech has covered five straight as a dog and is an impressive 12-3 ATS against teams with a winning record. Take the points.
