Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Philadelphia Flyers at Buffalo Sabres (-110, 5.5)

Everything was supposed to get back to normal when Ryan Miller settled in between the pipes for the first time in weeks on Saturday. Miller had been sidelined with a concussion after being steamrolled by Boston forward Milan Lucic, something the Sabres vowed wouldn’t happen again.

Then Nashville pest forward Jordin Tootoo drove the net and smoked Miller again. This time, Miller jumped on top of Tootoo immediately, but nothing much came of the ensuing fracas. Tootoo was tossed and has since been slapped with a two-game suspension.

Not that it makes much difference to the Sabres. They’re getting pushed around all over the place this year and Paul Gaustad shouldn’t be the guy that everybody turns to on the bench.

"All it does is prove the facts are right when I said it was open season. … It appears it is open season," coach Lindy Ruff told reporters about the NHL’s inability to protect goaltenders.

Now they have to deal with a feisty Flyers club, the same team that chased Miller with three goals on 11 shots back on Nov. 2. If Miller gets the call here, he’ll be sharp. He’s had just about enough of this nonsense.

Pick: Sabres

Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators (-110, 5.5)

Each coach handles his superstars differently. Some like to throw them all together, loading up on one line, while others prefer to spread the talent out.

Well, with the Caps managing just one win over their last six, Dale Hunter may be ready to throw all of his eggs in one basket. Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom practiced together on the same line Tuesday. Hunter was noncommittal about whether the line would stay together for Wednesday’s game, but it’s worth a shot at this point.

“I think that we’ve been losing, so we’ve got to do something to mix it up a little bit,” Backstrom told reporters. “We’ve been playing with each other before, and when we do the right things, we’re good together.”

Not to take anything away from the Sens, who have had a great start and play hard every night, but they are going to have a tough time keeping it going.

Pick: Capitals

Wednesday’s betting tips: Xavier cashing in on the road

Who’s hot

NHL: The over is 14-6-1 in Philadelphia’s last 21 overall.

NHL: Ottawa has won five of its last six home games against Washington.

NCAAB: Xavier has covered the number in each of its last six road games.

NCAAB: Illinois is 5-1 against the spread in its last six home games.

Who’s not

NHL: Carolina is 1-7 in its last eight road games.

NHL: Washington has lost five straight road games.

NCAAB: Buffalo has won two of its last seven overall.

NCAAB: Duke is 3-7 against the spread in its last 10.

NCAAB: The under is 4-12 in Alabama’s last 16 road games.

Key stat

28.2 – Weber State Wildcats guard Damian Lillard leads the nation in scoring, dropping 28.2 points per game. He blew up on Saturday with 41 points in a 91-89 double-overtime loss to St. Mary’s. However, the Wildcats dropped another game against the number (this time as 15-point favorites) and now sit at 1-3-1 against the spread this season. They visit BYU Wednesday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens - Lewis has been sidelined for three games due to turf toe and is expected to sit out Sunday's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Oddsmakers have the Ravens as 16.5-point favorites. The Ravens have won all three games without Lewis (2-0-1 ATS) and remain tied with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year has 68 tackles and two forced fumbles this season.

Game of the day

Arizona Wildcats at Florida Gators (-11.5, 143.5)

Notable quotable

"You can never go into a game showing fear. Yes, we will show United respect, that is clear. When they took a 2-0 lead, it seemed to me they maybe didn't take us seriously enough. But we know they will tale us seriously now, given the points we have taken in the group." – Basel bench boss Marco Streller ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match with Manchester United, who need at least a point to advance to the final 16. Oddsmakers have United set as a -180 favorite with the draw at +255 after the two clubs played to a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford in September.

Notes and tips

There are a handful of tasty Champions League matchups set to go down Wednesday. One of the more intriguing matches on the slate has Real Madrid set as just a +135 favorite against Ajax. Madrid has nothing to play for after already advancing to the knockout stage and is expected to start its reserves. Ajax has a number of issues to deal with, but only needs a draw to advance without any outside help, which is exactly what manager Frank de Boer is looking for. He told reporters he expects at least a point Wednesday and oddsmakers have the draw at +210.

The Florida Gators expect to welcome 6-foot-10 junior forward Erik Murphy back to the lineup Wednesday against Arizona after he missed the last three games with a knee injury. Murphy is averaging 10 points and four rebounds per game early this season and the Gators were just outrebounded 40-33 in a loss to Syracuse on Friday.

The Carolina Panthers have placed starting defensive tackles Sione Fua and Terrell McClain on season-ending injured reserve. The duo had started every game since the season opener after being selected in the third round of the draft. Fua has a right hamstring strain and McClain suffered a sprained left knee. The Panthers signed defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo and added defensive tackle Jason Shirley from the team's practice squad to fill the vacated roster spots. Carolina has lost 14 players this year to season-ending injuries and is set as a 3-point underdog at home to Atlanta.

OTTAWA +170 over Washington (3-way betting line) Pinnacle
The Capitals have won four games on the road in 12 attempts. Their last road game came on Nov. 11 in New Jersey in a game they were outshot 33-20. On Monday night against a Panther team returning home from a trip, the Caps trailed 5-1 at one point and eventually lost 5-4 to make the final look a lot more respectable than it was. The Panthers let up a bit. In that game, Dale Hunter elected to start Michael Neuvirth in net as opposed to Tomas Vokoun, who played for the Panthers for four years before signing with Washington. Vokoun’s family attended the game and he was hugely disappointed and now he’s likely going to be starting here. One has to wonder what his frame of mind will be. Hunter certainly did not endear himself to Vokoun or anyone else for that matter with that bonehead move in his first week on the job. The Caps are still a mess while the Senators keep winning and keep getting better. Ottawa is coming off a momentum building third period against Tampa Bay in a game they won 4-2. The Sens have picked up points in eight of their past 10 games and they’re on a pace to score 60 more goals than they did a year ago. This is a dangerous hockey team and one that is not only better than Washington but they’re in a much better frame of mind, they’re at home and they have more heart and desire. Play: Ottawa -½ +154 (Risking 2 units).

Philadelphia +150 over BUFFALO (3-way betting line) Pinnacle
The Sabres had lost five of six games before traveling to Nashville last Saturday and beating the Preds 3-2. In that game they looked like a Junior-A team playing an NHL team and were dominated by a team that usually doesn’t dominate anyone. Buffalo mustered a lousy 14 shots on net the entire game. Its previous win came against a Capitals team that was less interested then they were. Something is just not right with the Sabres. They have some key injuries but they’ve endured key injuries for years and always came out with a chip on their shoulder and played hard. This year the Sabres are soft. They’re not scoring and they’re not playing their typical physical game. The Flyers are the complete opposite. They have guys that give not 100% but 200% on every shift. Guys like Matt Read, Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Jakub Voracek and even Jaromir Jagr never take a second off and it rubs off on the whole team. The Flyers want to win and they want to win badly and that’s much more than we can say about the Sabres right now. Oh, yeah, they’re good too. Play: Philadelphia +150 (Risking 2 units).

RHODE ISLAND +6½ over Virginia Tech

The Rhode Island Rams have one win this season. The Hokies have five and they’re also a well- known program. We’re always looking to play value in these situations and that’s precisely what we have here. Va Tech is simply a huge risk laying significant points on the road. They’re 0-2 on the road and the five teams they beat can all be considered lousy. This year’s edition of the Hokies is an offensively challenged one that does not warrant this weight. The Rams are 1-7 but they have two OT losses and a couple of very close one’s. They lost to George Mason in OT and they lost to Texas by 10. They have a nice win over Hofstra and they’re averaging a pretty sweet 70 points per game. The Rams have a decent shot of winning this one outright and more than a decent shot of covering the number. Play: #746 Rhode Island +6½ (Risking 2.16 units to win 2).

We’re also playing the following games:

St Bonaventure +10½ (Risking 2.2 units to win 2)

Weber St. +13 (Risking 2.12 units to win 2)

Davidson +113 (Risking 2 units)

Game: Western Kentucky at Southern Illinois (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: Western Kentucky +7 (-110)

These programs both came into prominence with impressive NCAA Tournament runs, but they have also both struggled to regain the magic. The Salukis once dominant home court where they seldom lost, but have since become a non-factor as they are a dismal 1-7 here in their last eight. The Hilltoppers, after a pair of games with VCU, along with games vs. LSU, and Tulsa, have rebounded with two wins in their last three, losing only to unbeaten Murray State. This one looks like it is coming down to the wire and I like the points, especially on a Western Kentucky team that is 9-2 ATS vs. weak home teams that are under .400 on their own court. The Salukis once dominating home court has been reduced to 1-7 ATS in their last eight. Western Kentucky is the play in this one.

Xavier Musketeers vs. Butler Bulldogs
The A10 squares off against the Horizon League on the college hardwood Wednesday night when the eighth ranked Xavier Musketeers invade Hinkle Fieldhouse to post-up the Butler Bulldogs; ESPN & ESPN3.com will cover the game live starting at 9:00 ET.
The Musketeers have stormed out to a perfect 6-0 SU record after battling back from a 19 point deficit to pull out the 66-63 win against the Purdue Boilermakers last Saturday. Though Xavier failed to cover the 3.5-point spread, it’s a win that will shine upon the team brightly come selection Sunday. Guard Tu Holloway was one of four double-digit scorers for the Muskie’s scoring a game-high 21 points which included three straight bombs from beyond the arc in the game’s closing moments. Xavier already has an overtime win at Vanderbilt under its belt to check in 1-0 SU & ATS in true road games to date. Head coach Chris Mack's squad is a very balanced unit scoring an average of 74.0 PPG (#84) while limiting the opposition to just 62.5 PPG (#90). They've been deadly from downtown converting at a 43.0 percent clip (#18), and have outrebounded their opponents by 7.5 RPG (#30). The Musketeers have covered each of their last six away from the Cintas Center.
Do not make the mistake of thinking the 2011-12 Butler Bulldogs are the same Cinderella team that went on to play in the championship game of the last two NCAA Tournaments. Gone are Shelvin Mack and Matt Howard and along with them is a bevy of experience that this year's squad has failed to exhibit. To date, the Bulldogs have split each of their eight games played and failed to cover their five lined games. Most recently, Butler fell at home to Valparaiso 77-71 in overtime. The loss was the second extra session loss incurred this season after they fell at Evansville 80-77 in their season opener. While the defense has limited the opposition to 63.5 PPG (#107), head coach Brad Stevens’ squad has been atrocious at the offensive end of the court where they’ve scored an average of just 67.5 PPG (#196) and converted at a 40.8 percent clip from the field (#258). Butler’s 3-1-1 ATS its L/5 against the Atlantic 10.

These teams have met in the regular season each of the last three years. Xavier squeaked out the 51-49 win last year ultimately pushing the closing pointspread (-2) to halt the Bulldogs two-game win streak in the recent series. Though the Musketeers are 6-2 ATS their L/8 following a pointspread defeat, they're just 3-10-1 ATS their last 14 non-conference games. Butler has compiled a tremendous 57-28-2 ATS tally in its last 87 non-conference clashes, but has failed to cover each of its last four against +.500 opposition.
PICK: Xavier/Butler UNDER
