Wednesday’s betting tips: Shorthanded Bearcats still favored

Who’s hot

NHL: Boston has won its last six games in Ottawa.

NHL: Minnesota has won 17 of its last 21 overall.

NCAAB: The under is 8-1 in Northern Illinois’ last nine.

NCAAB: Richmond is 12-4 against the spread in its last 16.

Who’s not

NHL: Anaheim is 6-20 in its last 26.

NHL: Ottawa is 1-5 in its last six overall.

NCAAB: Cincinnati has covered in only one of its last six.

NCAAB: Iona is 1-4 against the number in its last five overall.

Key stat

22.2, 14.6 – The Cincinnati Bearcats will be missing 22.2 points and 14.6 rebounds per game from their roster Wednesday night as they get set to play their first game after four players were suspended following last Saturday’s brawl with Xavier. The Bearcats visit Wright State Wednesday as 4-point favorites.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Milan Michalek, Ottawa Senators - Michalek left Tuesday's game against the Buffalo Sabres with an upper body injury and his status for Wednesday’s game against Boston is up in the air. Michalek, who leads the NHL with 19 goals, was hurt upon colliding with teammate Erik Carlson with about 5 1/2 minutes left in the second period.

Game of the day

Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild (-115, 5)

Notable quotable

"Football is a game of injuries, we all know that. Some years you have more than others. ... Obviously guys get hurt and the next guy's got to stand up and be ready to go." – Jacksonville interim coach Mel Tucker. The Jaguars have placed more players on the injured reserve this season (27) than any other team in the NFL. They are set as 11-point underdogs at Atlanta on Thursday.

Notes and tips

Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta is expected to remain sidelined this week due to a lower-body injury. Gionta was injured in a game against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday and sat out Saturday's win against Carolina, ending a streak of 153 consecutive games played. Canadiens coach Jacques Martin Martin said Gionta will be sidelined for an “indeterminate” period. Gionta has eight goals and seven assists in 29 games this season.

Kansas City Chiefs interim coach Romeo Crennel said he hasn't decided on a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the unbeaten Green Bay Packers. Crennel was elevated to interim coach Monday following the firing of Todd Haley. Tyler Palko has lost three of four starts since Matt Cassel suffered a season-ending injury. The Chiefs have been awful offensively with Palko under center, failing to score more than 10 points in a game. Kansas City has scored only 45 points in its last six games. Palko has completed 80 of 134 passes for 796 yards with two touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Jared Sullinger’s status still remains up in the air. Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Tuesday that he is not sure when his All-American center will be healthy enough to return from a back injury. Sullinger missed the previous two games, including Saturday's 78-67 loss to Kansas. The Jayhawks play South Carolina this weekend, and it’s unclear if Sullinger will be ready to go. Sullinger is averaging 19.1 points and 10.3 rebounds this season.

College funds: Wednesday's best college hoops bets

Iona Gaels at Richmond Spiders (Pick ‘em, 145.5)

The Iona Gaels had a seven-game winning streak at Marshall on Sunday, but they left a lasting impression on the Herd.

“We beat an outstanding club,” Marshall head coach Tom Herrion told reporters after his club prevailed 82-63 as a 1.5-point favorite. “I thought after the first 10 minutes, we settled into the game. We recognized how fast they were, but it took us almost 10 minutes to settle into their speed. They play at a break-neck speed.”

Senior Michael Glover paced the attack by hitting nine of his 10 attempts from the floor for 20 points and added six rebounds.

Meanwhile, Richmond will look to rebound from an embarrassing 73-51 blowout loss to VCU and should be able to run the floor with the Gaels for at least a while.

Pick: Over

Cincinnati Bearcats at Wright State Raiders (4, 111.5)

Wednesday's game between Cincinnati and Wright State expects to be a low-scoring, grind-it-out contest as two of the better defensive teams in the nation meet at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.

It's the Bearcats first game since Saturday's brawl against archrival Xavier, an incident that received national attention and resulted in eight players being suspended, most notably Cincinnati's Yancy Gates. The senior forward bloodied Xavier's Kenny Frease with a blindside punch to the face in the melee and will begin his six-game suspension for the Wright State game.

The Bearcats started the season ranked No. 22, but lost two surprising early home games to Presbyterian and Marshall, blowing second-half leads in both. Cincinnati, picked fifth in the Big East preseason coaches poll, has topped the 70-point mark only twice.

Pick: Under

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Boston Bruins at Ottawa Senators (+150, 5.5)

The Senators will probably catch a major break as Bruins captain Zdeno Chara will likely sit out another game with knee injury, but they still have to think about what might have been if they hadn’t shipped the big guy out of town years ago.

Boston has won each of its last five meetings with the Senators and have outscored them 19-6 over that span.

The Bruins’ may also be without Dan Paille and Gregory Campbell, though it’s not like they don’t have the depth to get them through this one. The Senators are allowing 3.4 goals and 31.7 shots per game – not exactly great numbers to line up against Boston’s offense which sits third in the league with 3.2 goals per game and fifth in shots (33.2).

The Sens head into this one 5-0 in the second half of back-to-backs, but they’ll have their hands full here. With no value on the road team, we’re on board with the over.

Pick: Over

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (+105, 5.5)

The Ducks have already fired veteran coach Randy Carlyle and nearly shipped one of the top young snipers in the game out of town. So at this point, you have to wonder what it’s going to take to get this team’s attention.

They have dropped four of their last five and were sitting just one point clear of last place in the Western Conference heading into Wednesday’s action.

Anaheim battled hard but still ended up on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision on Saturday at Nashville. Brandon McMillian was whistled for a questionable slashing call early in the third and Roman Josi scored on the power play to make it 2-1 before Jordin Tootoo added another.

"It was a great hockey game decided by one cheesy penalty call," captain Ryan Getzlaf told reporters. "Everybody in the building saw it. I hope Mr. Shanahan saw it as well."

That kind of sulking is the last thing the Ducks need from their captain at this point. He didn’t mention the fact that Anaheim was outshot 28-17 in the game and it's obvious this club still needs a major attitude adjustment.

Phoenix has won nine of its last 14 road games and won’t let the Ducks off the hook.

Pick: Coyotes

Tennessee / Charleston Under

The mighty SEC will match wits with the Southern Conference when the Tennessee Volunteers (3-5, 5-3 ATS) battle the Charleston Cougars (7-1, 4-3 ATS) on Wednesday night, tip-off from TD Bank Arena is scheduled to go live on ESPN2 & ESPN3.com starting at 9:00 ET.

Since covering its first five games of the season and posting a 3-2 SU mark which included competitive losses to both Duke and Memphis, things have spiraled out of control for head coach Cuonzo Martin’s Volunteers who have gone on to lose both straight up and against spread in each of their last three hardwood clashes. With both Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris no longer members of the team, the Vols have suffered tremendously at the defensive end of the court giving up an average of 73.1 PPG (#291) while allowing the opposition to shoot 45% from the field (#266). Thankfully, Tennessee has done a solid job cleaning the glass outrebounding opponents by 4.3 rebounds per game, which has led to excelled play at the offensive end of the court where guard Trae Golden’s 15.1 PPG average has led his team to a 79.2 PPG average (#31). Tennessee enters this spot 1-3 SU but 3-1 ATS away from Knoxville on the year.

Charleston currently sits atop the South Division of the Southern Conference entering its fourth neutral court game of the season; the Cougars went 2-1 SU throughout its run in the Battle for Atlantis Tournament right before Thanksgiving. After arriving back home, the Cougars went on to pound The Citadel 83-64 (-16.5) in their SoCon opener before squeaking one out in overtime against Chattanooga their last time out. Head coach Bobby Cremins’ squad possesses four double digit scorers with Antwaine Wiggins’ 17.4 PPG leading the way. Big man Trent Wiedeman has really taken his game to the next level registering a near double-double every night with 13.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Scoring hasn’t been a problem (#59 at 76 PPG), but preventing the opposition from doing so as well has been with the Cougars surrendering a 41% conversion rate from the field (#210) and a 31.3% shooting percentage from beyond the arc (#119).

These teams have split their last two meetings in each of the last two seasons with Tennessee pasting Charleston 86-69 in 2009 and the Cougars returning the favor last season winning 91-78 as hefty 11 point underdogs; the ‘over’ cashed in both contests. The Volunteers have failed to cover each of their last seven following a pointspread defeat and possess a terrible 1-8 ATS mark against the L/9 .500 opponents they’ve faced. Charleston has covered each of its last four against the SEC, and carries an impressive 55-25 ATS tally in its L/80 nonconference matchups.

South Florida +115 over AUBURN Pinnacle
Lots of reasons to lay off the Tigers here and we’ll start with the fact that they’ve been off since December 2 when they were drilled by Seton Hall 81-59. That was the only quality team that Auburn faced this season and they’ve only played five games in total. The other four games were against McNeese St., Kennesaw, Nicholls State and Arkansas Pine Bluff. Meanwhile, South Florida will play its 12th game of the season tonight. The Bulls have already played the likes of Kansas, Old Dominion, VCU and Penn State. They lost by four to the Nittany Lions and they took a very good ODU to OT. The real deal here is that the Auburn Tigers are nothing this season. They scheduled a ton of games against cupcakes and that’s not going to prepare them for when they have to play SEC teams. The Bulls are not a threat to do anything in the Big East but at least they scheduled some games they had no chance of winning. That counts and it makes them more battle tested than the Tigers by a wide margin. Auburn is unlikely to beat any quality team this year. Play South Florida +115 (Risking 2 units).
