Thursday Night Football: Texans at Colts
By Covers Staff

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts (+5.5, 40)

THE STORY: Since the Houston Texans entered the league in 2002, the road to the AFC South title has typically gone through Indianapolis. That script has finally changed this season for Houston, which has already wrapped up the division title and would like to use Thursday night's visit to the Colts as a steppingstone to even loftier goals. The Texans are still in the hunt for one of the top two seeds and a first-round bye in the playoffs, but they'll need to end a major hex by winning in Indianapolis for the first time. The Colts finally got in the win column last week with a 27-13 victory over Tennessee.

TV: NFL Network, 8:20 p.m. ET.

LINE: The Texans opened as high as 6.5-point favorites and have dropped to -5.5. The total

ABOUT THE TEXANS (10-4, 9-4-1 ATS): Houston had its seven-game winning streak snapped at home by Carolina, a loss that cost the Texans a chance to move ahead of Baltimore. WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) will sit out his third straight game, so expect rookie QB T.J. Yates to hand off liberally to RBs Arian Foster and Ben Tate. Foster has rushed for 333 yards and two TDs in two games vs. the Colts, and Tate went for 116 yards and a TD in a season-opening 34-7 win over the Colts. Yates was intercepted twice last week.

ABOUT THE COLTS (1-13, 5-9-0 ATS): Indianapolis has yielded an AFC-worst 395 points, but its defense came through with the decisive play to snap its 13-game skid when Jacob Lacey returned an interception for a touchdown against the Titans. It marked only the second time that the Colts have held an opponent under 20 points. QB Dan Orlovsky threw for only 87 yards and the Colts managed just 10 first downs, but Donald Brown rambled for a career-high 161 yards, including a clinching 80-yard touchdown run. Brown has a TD in three of his last four games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Foster rushed for a franchise-record 231 yards against the Colts in Week 1 of the 2010 season.

2. Colts DEs Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis have 15.5 and 12.2 sacks, respectively, against the Texans – their most vs. any opponent.

3. Houston is 0-9 all time in Indy, but is 4-0 against the AFC South this season.

TRENDS:

* Over is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
* Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Indianapolis.
* Colts are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
* Texans are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.

PREDICTION: Texans 20, Colts 17. Houston hammers away with its ground game and survives a close call to win in Indy for the first time.

Las Vegas Bowl: What bettors need to know

Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Boise State Broncos (-14, 66)

MAACO BOWL LAS VEGAS STORYLINES

1. No. 6 Boise State is back in this contest for the second straight year after once again missing out on a BCS bid. Arizona State is lucky to be anywhere after collapsing with four straight losses to end the regular season, which led to the firing of Dennis Erickson, who will coach in the bowl game.

2. Both teams have prolific quarterbacks. Boise State’s Kellen Moore (49-3) is the winningest quarterback in NCAA history and is second on the career touchdowns list with 140. Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler is a gunslinger who passed for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns.

3. Boise State’s pass defense ranks 25th nationally at 195.5 yards per game; Arizona State could try the long-ball route that worked well for TCU in its victory over the Broncos when the Horned Frogs had touchdown plays of 75, 74 and 69 yards. The Sun Devils rank 11th in passing offense (310.2), and Osweiler has a big-time target in Gerrell Robinson (64 receptions for 1,156 yards).

4. Boise State is 7-4 in bowl games, including last year’s 26-3 victory over Utah in Las Vegas. Arizona State is 12-11-1 and in its first bowl game since losing to Texas in the 2007 Holiday Bowl.

TV: ESPN

LINE: Boise State opened as low as -12.5 and has grown to as big as a 15-point favorite. The total has dropped from 66.5 to 65.5 at some books.

WEATHER: The sun should be out in Las Vegas, with temperatures in the low 40s. Winds will blow slightly, at 9 mph at Sam Boyd Stadium.

ABOUT BOISE STATE (11-1, 6-1 Mountain West, 4-8 ATS): The Broncos are back in Las Vegas due to the same formula that hurt them in 2010 – a weak schedule and a missed field goal. Boise State went 1-1 against the two tough teams on its schedule (Georgia and TCU) and lost to the Horned Frogs 36-35 when Dan Goodale missed a game-winning 39-yard field goal attempt. A year earlier, it was Kyle Brotzman missing two chip-shot kicks in a loss to Nevada. Moore passed for 3,507 yards and a school-record 41 touchdowns, and receiver Tyler Shoemaker caught a school-best 15 touchdowns. Doug Martin has rushed for 1,370 yards, fourth most in school history.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12, 3-8-1 ATS): The Sun Devils were cruising toward a berth in the Pac-12 title game when they were 6-2 in late October before the four-game November skid in which they allowed 144 points. The highlight of the season was a 43-22 shellacking of USC. Erickson is 31-30 in five seasons at Arizona State entering his finale. Running back Cameron Marshall (1,038) has 18 rushing touchdowns to tie the school record shared by Woody Green (1972) and Terry Battle (1996). Linebacker Vontaze Burfict (team-high five sacks) has been practicing on the second team after he finished the regular season poorly and reportedly refused to re-enter the season finale against California after being pulled.

TRENDS:

* Sun Devils are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Bowl games.
* Broncos are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 bowl games.
* Under is 5-2 in Sun Devils last seven Bowl games.
* Under is 7-2-1 in Broncos last 10 non-conference games.

PREDICTION: Boise State 45, Arizona State 23 – No telling whether the Sun Devils will be inspired for Erickson’s final game or go through the motions, but Boise State will be looking for a rout in Moore’s final game

College funds: Thursday's best NCAAB bets

Florida State Seminoles at Florida Gators (-8, 136)

This has all the makings of a classic offense vs. defense matchup.

The Gators rank fifth nationally averaging 86.1 points per game, while the Seminoles allow just 57.8 points per contest.

"We know coming in against a team like Florida State and those other (big) teams that if we don't rebound the ball, we could lose," Gators guard Erving Walker told reporters after pacing the club with 19 points in its recent blowout of Mississippi Valley State. "Their coach has them very disciplined."

The Seminoles also plan to switch up their defensive assignments a bit to combat a Gators club that fires about 60 shots per game. Florida State wants to pressure Florida’s guards high to take away the 3-point shot and force them into the paint.

Not like anybody hasn’t tried that before, but if they can pull it off, this could be close.

Pick: Seminoles

Illinois Fighting Illini at Missouri Tigers (-6, 138.5)

Illinois nearly got caught looking ahead to Missouri, escaping with a 64-60 win over Cornell on Monday as a big 16.5-point favorite. The unbeaten Tigers are the Fighting Illini's greatest test of the season.

The Tigers haven’t skipped a beat with first-year head coach Frank Haith at the helm. They rank second in the country in scoring, averaging almost 88 points per game. The Fighting Illini lead the all-time “Braggin’ Rights” series 27-14, but the Tigers have won the last two meetings.

The Fighting Illini's grind-it-out pace will be a contrast to the fast-and-furious style of the Tigers. The Fighting Illini do the most damage when feeding the ball inside to 7-footer Meyers Leonard. He scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds versus Cornell, but has struggled with foul trouble at times this season.

Bradley transfer Sam Maniscalco looked like a budding floor general for Illinois earlier in the season, but is mired in a slump heading into Thursday.

Illinois may have a tough time keeping up in this one.

Pick: Tigers

Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets

Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers (-125, 5)

Something has to give when the Minnesota Wild visit the Edmonton Oilers Thursday.

Minnesota is 0-3-2 in its last five games as the club struggles with some significant injuries, while after a fast start Edmonton has won just two of its last 11 overall.

"We're not sitting here pouting or upset at the way we played," center Kyle Brodziak told reporters. "We didn't feel we played a bad game. We're in a bit of a slump right now. But what team doesn't go through a slump during the year?"

Brodziak has a point and Minnesota may get a big boost as Mikko Koivu is expected to return to the lineup after missing the last three games with a leg injury. Koivu isn’t just the club’s captain, but also its leading scorer with 28 points this season.

That may be enough to help the Wild snap this skid.

Pick: Wild

Florida Panthers at Ottawa Senators (-110, 5.5)

The Florida Panthers may be coming off a 2-1 loss to Ed Jovanovski's former team, the Phoenix Coyotes, but the veteran defenseman sees a lot of similarities between the success his old team had and what the Cats are doing this year.

The Panthers sat tied for third in the Eastern Conference with 42 points ahead of Wednesday’s action.

"We're not going to surprise anyone anymore," Jovanovski told reporters. "This is similar to Phoenix. Everyone said we were lucky, waited for us to fall off. And we finished with 107 points. If you have structure and maintain consistency, you'll have success."

The Panthers have had a terrible time against the Senators lately, having dropped seven straight meetings between the two teams. That doesn’t persuade us to take the home team here, but we’ll take a shot with the over.

Pick: Over

Thursday’s betting tips: Boise bettors ignore ATS skid

Who’s hot

NFL: Houston is 6-1-1 against the spread in its last eight.

NCAAF: Boise State has covered the number in eight of its last 10 bowl games.

NHL: Buffalo has won nine of its last 12 games in Toronto.

NCAAB: Harvard has covered in nine of its last 13 home games.

NBA: Charlotte has covered in five of its last six matchups with Atlanta.

Who’s not

NFL: Indianapolis is 1-4 against the number in its last five home games.

NCAAF: Arizona State has dropped four straight against the number.

NHL: Anaheim has won just five of its last 28.

NCAAB: Illinois is 0-4 against the spread in its last four.

NBA: The over is 3-6 in the last nine meetings between Denver and Phoenix.

Key stat

33 - The Arizona State Sun Devils have allowed 33 points per game over their last six. They allowed 19 points per game over the first six games of the season.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Owen Daniels, Houston Texans – The Texans tight end remains questionable for Thursday’s game with a knee injury, though the team expects him to give it a go in warm ups. With wideout Andre Johnson already ruled out, missing Daniels could be a big loss for Houston. Daniels leads the team with 673 receiving yards.

Game of the day

Hoston Texans at Indianapolis Colts (6, 40)

Notable quotable

“I truly appreciate them. They come out with the Reggie signs, and no matter what the situation is they are always there cheering and it could be a little tough. Everybody said it would be a little emotional for me.” Indianapolis Colts wideout Reggie Wayne on Indy’s fans amid rumors that Thursday’s game against Houston could be his last home game as a Colt. The 33-year-old, who has just 59 catches and three touchdowns this season, is a free agent in the offseason.

Notes and tips

The Boise State Broncos are set as 14-point favorites against Arizona State in Thursday’s Las Vegas bowl and more than 72 percent of Covers.com Consensus bettors are backing the Broncos. Boise State has covered in eight of its last 10 bowl games, but comes into this game having dropped six straight against the number.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Bryant suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist Wednesday and is currently listed as day-to-day. However, the team hasn’t indicated whether it was a partial or a complete tear. Bryant was scheduled to sit out Wednesday’s preseason matchup with the Clippers leaving his status for Christmas Day’s season opener against Chicago in question.

Darryl Sutter will debut as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Kings Thursday at home against the Anaheim Ducks. Los Angeles fired coach Terry Murray earlier this week. Assistant John Stevens has been serving as interim coach for the past four games, going 2-2. Sutter has been out of hockey since resigning as general manager of the Calgary Flames in December 2010. He and Lombardi previously worked together in San Jose. The Kings are set as -175 favorites.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry injured his right ankle in Tuesday's exhibition game against Sacramento. Curry underwent surgery on the same foot in May. He was scheduled to be re-evaluated Wednesday after leaving the arena on crutches Tuesday night. The third-year guard was plagued by recurring ankle sprains last season, although he misses only eight games. Curry averaged 18.6 points, 5.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds last season for Golden State, which will face the Los Angeles Lakers in the season opener Sunday night.

BANG THE BOOK

Thursday's Best NFL Bet

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts (+5.5, 40)

On the same weekend that the Green Bay Packers dropped their first game of the season, the Indianapolis Colts won their first game. Indianapolis picked up an impressive two touchdown win at home over the Tennessee Titans. Houston booked its first trip to the playoffs two weeks ago in Cincinnati. The Texans were beaten 28-13 at home by the Carolina Panthers. Can they get back on track this Thursday in Indianapolis?

Dan Orlovsky has come in and done a nice job at quarterback for the Colts. Indianapolis was getting poor quarterback play all year from Kerry Collins and Curtis Painter, but Orlovsky has been a big upgrade. Orlovsky has completed 64% of his passes during his three games as a starter. He has a quarterback rating of 85.9, which is about 20 points higher than Collins or Painter. Pierre Garcon is the Colts leading receiver this year. Garcon has 62 catches and six touchdown receptions in 2011. The most encouraging part of last week’s game for this offense was the emergence of Donald Brown in the backfield. Brown had 28 carries for 161 yards. If the Colts can continue to get the running game going, it will help them be much more competitive to finish off the year.

Indianapolis has Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis on the edges as a terrific pass rushing tandem, but the Colts defense doesn’t have too much else going for it this season. This unit has allowed 28.2 points per game. Pat Angerer has stepped up as the team’s most consistent linebacker, but the Colts need more play makers on defense.

T.J. Yates had a great first few weeks in the NFL, but last weekend is a week he’d rather forget. Yates threw no touchdowns and two interceptions in the team’s loss last week. The Texans have the second best rushing offense in the league. Arian Foster and Ben Tate have both been nearly unstoppable this season. Foster has gained 1,066 rushing yards already this season, and he has nine touchdown runs. He is also second on the team in both receptions and receiving yards. Tate has had a breakout season in the backfield as well. He is averaging a very impressive 5.5 yards per carry. Andre Johnson is listed as questionable for this game due to a hamstring injury.

The Texans defense has been superb this season. This is a secondary that ranked dead last in the league last year against the pass, but this year they have been tremendous. Johnathan Joseph was a huge acquisition in the offseason for this unit, and he has proven to be a lockdown corner this season. Brian Cushing and DeMeco Ryans form a terrific tandem of middle linebackers. This is a complete defense that has no real weakness. Houston is giving up just 16.9 points per game.

The Colts offense has been much better over the last few games. Houston should be able to move the ball quite a bit against the weak Indianapolis defense. The over is my favorite play in this one.

PICK: Over 40.5

BANG THE BOOK

Thursday's Best CFB Bet

Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Boise State Broncos (-14, 66)

The pre-Christmas bowl game schedule is not exactly filled with exciting matchups, but I think this game is the best of the bunch. Arizona State was inconsistent this year, but they showed what they are capable of in a pretty good PAC 12 Conference. Boise State was a missed field goal away from likely being in the BCS National Championship Game. Will the Broncos deliver another dominating bowl appearance or will the Sun Devils spoil the party?

Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler is a very good quarterback. Osweiler spreads the ball around nicely from his spot under center. He finished the season with an impressive 3,641 yards through the air. There is no clear star at the wide receiver spot for Arizona State, but the Sun Devils have a lot of depth. The team has ten players with ten or more receptions this season. Cameron Marshall is a work horse in the backfield. Marshall ran for 18 touchdowns during the regular season. Arizona State averages 34 points per contest.

The Sun Devils defense struggled with injuries this year, and it definitely showed on the field. Arizona State is missing a couple of cornerbacks, and the lack of depth at cornerback showed in a big way during the PAC 12 season. The Sun Devils allowed 271 yards per game through the air. The front seven wasn’t very good at getting after the quarterback, but they hold their own against the run.

Kellen Moore has had a brilliant four-year career at Boise State. He certainly wants to end that terrific career on a high note. Moore has piled up a ridiculous 140 touchdowns compared to just 26 interceptions in his four years under center. This season he has a career high completion percentage of 74%. He is clearly one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, and I fully expect him to put together one final great game. Boise State has a pair of great tailbacks in Doug Martin and D.J. Harper. Martin is the bruiser and Harper is the slasher. The Broncos have seven receivers with at least 26 receptions this year. Tyler Shoemaker has been the team’s big play receiver. The Broncos average 43 points per game.

Boise State’s defense took a small step back this year, but they are still a very solid unit. The front seven really struggled to put pressure on the opposing quarterback this year. The Broncos picked up just 18 sacks all season. On the positive side, this is a unit that allowed opponents to convert on only 30% of their third-down conversion attempts. They are a team that does a nice job keeping the opponent out of the end zone. This defense gave up only 18.2 points per game this year.

Arizona State already fired its coach, and I don’t think they will be able to slow down Boise State at all. Look for the Broncos to roll.

Game: Arizona State vs. Boise State (Thursday 12/22 8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Arizona State +14 (-110)

It is almost unfair to think that this Boise State team went from challenging for a BCS Bowl to a pre-Christmas Bowl. What caused the huge drop? One loss by a single point to a quality 10-2 team. The Broncos rank No. 6 in the nation, but were slighted again despite a 14-point win over Georgia on a neutral field, while Georgia plays after New Year's Day with their three losses. This one takes on the appearance of the last time the Broncos were slighted and played against East Carolina back in ‘07-‘08 in a disappointment Bowl. In that game the Broncos went down 41-38 to the Pirates in a shootout. Arizona State comes limping into this one on the heels of four straight losses, and barely made it at 6-6 on the season. It is a chance for redemption and a winning season against a quality program that has become a Top 10 fixture. Remember that this team Sun Devils beat Missouri and USC, and gave Oregon a run for their money as w! ell. So, they can certainly play on this level. Their offense has not been a shortcoming with the Sun Devils producing 27 or more points in all but one game this season. They will certainly get their share here vs. what should be a less than focused Broncos defense. Couple that with a pair of TDs in the line and this one is certainly chock full of value. Even with losing their last four, Arizona State did not lose any by more than 9 points and no one beat them by more than 14 points all year. Arizona State is 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 when taking more than +10.5 points, and Boise State is 0-6 ATS in their last six. Take Arizona State.

Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Boise State Broncos
The Las Vegas Bowl is set to go on Thursday night in Sin City where the Boise State Broncos (11-1, 4-8 ATS) will look to win it for the second year in a row against the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-6, 4-8 ATS); kick-off from Sam Boyd Stadium is set to go live at 8:00 ET on ESPN & ESPN3.com.

With the USC Trojans ineligible to participate in the first ever PAC-12 Championship Game, it was of the belief that the South Division was for the Sun Devils taking. Head coach Dennis Erickson had 15 starters returning from last year's 6-6 SU team that just missed out on snapping its three-year bowl-less streak. After a hot 5-1 SU start over the course of its first six games played, ASU fell of the map dropping all but one of its last six games played which included losing outright as favorites against UCLA, Washington State, Arizona and California to close out the year. Due to coming up woefully short of the programs expected goals, Erickson was shown the door and Todd Graham – formerly at PITT - has been hired to run his potentially explosive offense in the desert for the foreseeable future. Arizona State won just one of its five games played away from Sun Devil Stadium (2-3 ATS) on the year, and checks in with a 1-5 ATS tally in its L/6 December games played.

Another one-loss season for the Broncos, and it’s another trip to Sin City where the Broncos certainly don’t deserve to be. This is a program that’s gone a combined 37-2 SU the L/3 seasons and has just one BCS appearance during that stretch. Head coach Chris Petersen finally blew up about the lack of respect for his program once the Broncos bowl destination was announced. "Everybody is just very tired of the BCS," Petersen said. "I think that's the bottom line. Everybody is frustrated. Everybody doesn't really know what to do anymore. It doesn't make sense to anybody. I don't think anybody is happy anywhere." Petersen added, "The whole thing needs to be changed, there's no question about it," he said. " ... I think (change) is coming, I really do." Whether this outlook about where it’s playing affects Boise State’s play is yet to be determined, but what CFB bettors do know is that the Broncos have covered eight of their L/10 bowl games having throttled Utah 26-3 in this venue a year ago.

These teams have only collided on the gridiron once back in 1996 when Arizona State handed Boise State a 56-7 beat down as 38 point favorites. The Sun Devils check in 6-3 SU & 3-4 ATS in their L/9 non-conference tussles, but have covered the closing number at an 8-2-1 ATS clip the L/11 times they were installed underdogs of 10.5 points or more. Boise State has covered each of its L/5 neutral field bouts and stands 5-2-1 ATS its L/8 against the Pac-12, but it's failed to cover each of its last six as a favorite and is just 2-5 ATS its L/7 December match-ups.

Houston –6 over INDIANAPOLIS

Colts shook a monkey off their backs with first win of season last week over the Titans. It was Indy’s first win without Peyton Manning at quarterback since 1997. However, Dan Orlovsky was anything but impressive, having thrown for a mere 82 yards in his first career win spanning seven years and nine starts. The Texans figure to get back on their horse after taking a breather against the Panthers last week on the heels of locking up their first-ever playoff berth. The line is short because Houston travels on a short week and got whacked by the Panthers last week. However, the Colts celebrated their win like a playoff game and accomplished their goal of not going winless. Let’s also not forget that the Texans have been the Colts whipping boys for years. With a chance to bury Indianapolis and solidify a higher seed in the playoffs in the process, expect the Texans to do exactly that. Play: Houston –6 (No bets).

Arizona State +14½ over Boise St

Dennis Erickson is coaching his last game for the Sun Devils after being let go following a disappointing finish to the season but we've seen many teams in the past rise to the occasion under the same circumstances. The Sun Devils closed the year with four straight losses but it wasn’t for a lack of scoring, having tallied at least 27 points in each. The strength of the Sun Devils' offense has been the arm of QB Brock Osweiler. The young Osweiler is actually ranked ahead of his highly regarded counterpart in this game. He’ll probably return next season for his senior year and should be one of the leading QB’s in next year’s draft class. The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Osweiler has elite physical tools and more than adequate mobility for his size. He’s worth the price of admission and it’s quite risky giving a guy like that a two-touchdown head start. He led his Sun Devils to a pair of solid wins against ranked teams, including Missouri and USC. The Broncos bring a potent offense to the table as well, led by their ace senior quarterback, Kellen Moore. Moore is surrounded by a bunch of senior players but we’re not sure if the motivation is there for Boise as their lofty expectations of a bigger bowl game were not met. Boise State feels like it was snubbed by the BCS but that’s what you get when you schedule games against dregs and don’t run the table. Call it pouting if you will but the Broncos failed to cover a game from October 15th on, a 0-6 run versus the spread. The Broncos played two creditable opponents all year. They opened the year with a win over Georgia and they lost to TCU. Other than that, it was garbage time for the Broncos and along with that comes a bunch of skewed stats. The Sun Devils bring enough to the table to keep this one within range. Play: Arizona St +14½ (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

Karl Hobs put this program back on the map while D.C. rival Georgetown was down for a few years. Georgetown became a top team again, and Hobbs had trouble battling them for players, in the end that cost him his job. The Colonels are still a long way away from being viable in the A-10 again and have started a dismal 4-6, and certainly the resume of wins is not eye-opening. James Madison has enough pieces left from a 21-win team a year ago to start 5-3 on the season and has a notable win vs. Penn. The Dukes have stepped-up as a small to mid-sized dog of less than +7 to post a 9-3 ATS mark in their last 12. George Washington is amongst the nation's worst teams in non-conference games at 11-38-3 ATS in their last 52. Play on James Madison.

We have the logical play with 11-1 Boise playing 6-6 Arizona State but that loss at home to TCU sticks out as the Horn Frogs had their hands full last night when pulling out a late win against a WAC foe La Tech 31-24 and the Broncos only went 4-8 ATS but the Sun Devils weren’t much better as they were a putrid 3-7-1 ATS so we will just sit back and bet over the total as these two teams look to light up the scoreboard.

Bob Christ’s breakdown of Thursday Pro Football Week 16 December 22, 2011 6:50 AM by Bob Christ

PRO FOOTBALL THURSDAY, Dec. 22

Only a week ago, the matchup between the Texans and Colts in Indianapolis had the look of yet another Thursday night lock. It was going to be an opportunity to take a substantial underdog against a Houston squad starting a rookie QB – 24-year-old T.J. Yates.

As Lee Corso would say: Not so fast, my friend.

As mentioned in last week’s comments about the Thursday Jacksonville-at-Atlanta game, first-year QBs often are overmatched in games when they have only three-days’ preparation time, which was the predicament facing the Jaguars’ Blaine Gabbert vs. the Falcons. Jacksonville fell behind 41-0 before Atlanta lost interest.

However, with the point spread for Thursday night artificially low thanks to last week’s home loss by Houston to Carolina, and after Indy finally got its first victory, it might not be such a good idea to automatically go against the first-year QB.

Anyway, here’s a closer look at the game:

Houston (10-4) at Indianapolis (1-13)

Time: 5:20 p.m. PT

Line: Texans by 5.5 (40)

Facts: Since 2000, the aforementioned eight rookie QBs on extra-short rest have gone 1-7 (2-6 ATS) in Thursday games. The lone win came in 2009 when Mark Sanchez, who was 7-for-15 for 104 yards, and the Jets beat Buffalo 19-13. In those eight games, the rookies had a cumulative three TD throws and 12 INTs. Their teams scored a norm of 10.5 points. … The Texans’ defense, which has dropped to No. 2 this week, was without coordinator Wade Phillips in a 28-13 loss to Carolina (surgery) and probably will be so Thursday.

Analysis: A key reason Sanchez was able to win on short prep time when others failed was because he was shielded by a running game that finished tops in the league and totaled 249 yards vs. the Bills. Houston has the league’s second-best ground game this season and likely won’t have a minus-3 turnover differential again like it did against the Panthers. And besides, Indy already is 0-3 ATS vs. rookie QBs this year.

Forecast: Texans 28, Colts 20

N.Y. Islanders +160 over N.Y. RANGERS

With an important game on deck tomorrow against the Flyers, the Rangers will save Henrik Lundqvist for that one and turn to backup Marty Biron tonight. That’s not to say the Rangers will not be up for this game, it just says that they’re putting more weight on tomorrow’s game. The Rangers are coming off back-to-back wins over Phoenix and New Jersey. Against Phoenix they scored with a tenth of a second left in the game to win it and against New Jersey, they were the second best team on the ice, getting badly out-chanced and outshot. Prior to that, the Rangers had lost two straight and four of six. It’s safe to say that the Blue Shirts could conceivably be on a four-game losing streak with six losses in its past eight. The Islanders have picked up points in eight of their last 11. They remain one of the more undervalued teams in the league because of a poor record. The Islanders and Rangers have split their last four games, which has become commonplace over the years. Rangers are playing worse than their record suggests, thus creating the overlay. Play: N.Y. Islanders +160 (Risking 2 units).

Columbus +156 over NASHVILLE

These two are no strangers to one another. They play six times a year and the games are commonly close. They’ve played three times this season and all three were decided by one goal with two of them going into OT. Throw the standings and current form out the window when these two get together. The Predators are a big risk laying significant weight because they struggle to score goals and they usually have to scratch and claw for every win. The Blue Jackets are having another awful year. Losing is becoming a part of who they are. However, they’re also capable of surprises, as there is talent on the roster that does rear its head from time to time. A game total of 5 suggests a low scoring, close game with the outcome very much up for grabs. Overlay. Play: Columbus +156 (Risking 2 units).

Anaheim +156 over LOS ANGELES

You simply can’t lay this type of juice with a Los Angeles team that has scored two goals or less in regulation in 12 straight games. That’s almost hard to believe but it’s true. The Kings also return home from a four-game trip to the east coast in which they played well but only split the four games. They had 40 shots or more on net in three of those games and yet they still only scored six goals in four games. Now the situation is one that could find them fatigued. The Ducks are close to snapping out of their current funk. They have to get better goaltending from Jonas Hiller, a guy that was hugely reliable in the past but is having an off year. Anaheim rallied from three down in its last game to tie Dallas before losing it in the final frame. They’re tightening up defensively and cutting right down on opponents’ scoring chances. This is the Ducks last game until after Christmas. Expect them to really give it everything they have in an attempt to turn things around before the break. The Kings play again tomorrow in San Jose. They’re in an unfavorable spot and for a team that is laboring to score goals, they’re overpriced. Play: Anaheim +156 (Risking 2 units).

NHL PREDICTIONS

1 UNIT* NHL* Montreal Canadiens @ Winnipeg Jets: WINNIPEG JETS TO WIN (-125)
(Note: I'm risking 1.25 units to win 1 unit)
I won't go into full details about the struggles that Montreal is having, as we talked about it last night, but their 5-1 loss last night drops them to 13-15-7 on the season. They've lost 4 straight and have won just 3 times in their last 13 games. Over their last 5 games they are averaging 4 goals against per game, and face the Jets who average just under 3 goals per game at home. Winnipeg is coming off of a 3-2 shootout loss on Tuesday night at home, moving them to 2-1-1 on their home stand. The Jets are still 9-3 in their last 12 home games. In fact Winnipeg hasn't lost back to back home games since November 10th, and there was a 7 game road trip in the middle of the two home games. The Canadiens did spoil the Jets home opener with a 5-1 win back on October 9th, but the Jets have come along way since then and that should be added motivation. To add to that, goalie Ondrej Pavelec called out his forwards after Tuesday's loss. Take note that the Canadiens are just 2-5 in their last 7 road games, and a brutal 2-12 in their last 14 games playing on 0 days rest. Montreal is also just 5-12 in their last 17 road games vs a team with a home winning % greater than .600. Tonight's game comes down to Montreal with close to zero confidence after another loss last night and struggling on the second of back to back games. Add to that the motivation that Winnipeg has in a revenge game + one of their leaders calling out the offense, and the big home advantage Winnipeg has had lately. I like the Jets to win this one, and don't mind laying the small price to take them at home.
