Western Mich +3 (3.3* play)

This game is pretty dead even so it only makes sense to take the under dog.Â* It’s Purdue with the strength of their running game and Western Mich with the strength of their passing game.Â* Purdue though lost their most talented RB at the end of the season in Ralph Bolden with an ACL so they’ll go RB by committee.Â* Alex Carder to Jordan White has been an exciting combo to watch 127 receptions for 1646 yards and 16 TD’s.Â* Alex Carder could be starting for most Big Ten teams actually and he makes a lot of audibles at the line of scrimmage which should make the difference today in my opinion.Â* Purdue was the best pass defense in the Big Ten from an efficiency standpoint this year 58.6%, but that’s because they did not face many QB’s that could pass.Â* Notre Dame’s Tommy Rees was 61% fro 264 yards and 3 TD 0 INT, Wisconsin’s Russel Wilson was 75% for 241 yards 2 TD 0 INT.Â* Of all the bad QB’s they faced they only picked off 8 passes.Â* Even Iowa’s James Vandenberg had 68.8% 273 yards 3 TD 0 INT.Â* I expect Carder to go over 300 yards 3TD and he doesn’t make many mistakes so 0 interceptions.
Â*
On the flip side can Western Mich compete with a Big Ten school? They’ve shown that ability in the past they went on the road to Illinois and lost 23-20 they just couldn’t stop the run giving up nearly 300 yards, but as I said I’m not so sure Purdue has quite the explosiveness that Illinois has.Â* It also helps this game will be played in the state of Michigan at Ford Field so small advantage to Western Michigan.Â* Both team’s feature a DT that should be playing on Sunday’s in Western Michigan’s MAC defensive POY Drew Norwak 20 TFL and 10 sacks the 300lb commands double teams most of the time same goes for the 305 lb DT from Purdue Kawan Short 17.5 TFL and 6.5 sacks.
Â*
Western Mich’s defense is under rated most of their defensive struggles came vs. Toledo and Northern Illinois two of the nation’s best offenses despite being out of the MAC they have tons of talent more so than Purdues offensive scheme.Â* I think they’ll have no trouble moving the ball on Purdue and the key will be what they do when they get in the red zone.Â* Purdue is allowing 64% TD’s and they are only scoring 64% on their 47 attempts while Western Michigan comes into this one converting 72% of their 55 attempts and have allowed 54% TD’s both better than the Boilermakers who can not be as excited to be in this bowl game as Western Michigan.Â* Both teams commit over 7 penalties a game so expect this game to drag on a bit and Western Michigan kicker John Potter has 34 touchbacks which should limit another strength of Purdue the kick off return game especially in a dome.Â* Purdue is 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 games as a favorite.

Louisville +1.5 (4.4* NCAAF POD)
Love Louisville tonight they can eliminate an aspect of NC State and make them one dimensional and that's the running game which is ranked 107th anyway. Give Strong 4 weeks to prepare for a one dimensional offense that can't protect their QB's and I see Louisville which has been an under dog all year coming up with another big win. I mean they put up 34 points in back to back games to close out the regular season against two very talented defenses in South Florida and Uconn and now they play another talented defense in NC State.

Now take a look because NC State has had a much easier schedule to get to this point as they've faced two FCS foes and the average defense as far as total yards allowed was 60th compared to Louisville's opponents which came in at 45th. Louisville had to go up against 5 top 20 rushing defenses from ypc stand point and they themselves are ranked 9th. NC State did not play too well vs. Cincinatti ( Big East Opponent) and FSU who are the closest in scoring defense and rushing defense both in the top 10 too. NC State lost both those games by a combined 14 to 78. Now Florida State and Cinci had a better pass defense and more explosiveness on offense in the regular season so I do not expect a blow out here, but I do expect Louisville, a very young team to benefit big time from these extra practices and they'll continue to do what they do which is win as under dogs. NC State's biggest strength is taking the ball away they're ranked 6th, but Louisville only turned it over a total of 19 times this year and they faced Uconn #3 in takeaways and Rutgers 12th and they won both of those games.

Western Michigan +2½ over Purdue

Western Michigan sports one of the nation's top quarterbacks in Alex Carder, while national receiving leader Jordan White headlines a deep and productive group. The Broncos are strictly one-dimensional though, which is good news for a Purdue team that has struggled to stop good rushing attacks but has a solid secondary. Western Michigan is fired up for its first bowl trip to nearby Detroit and while others from the Big Ten may have been disappointed with this bowl game, the Boilermakers are not. The Boilers should be able to run the ball on a soft Broncos rush defense despite losing RB Ralph Bolden to a serious knee injury in the season finale at Indiana but this team has suffered further roster issues since then. The leading tackler and third-leading receiver will miss the bowl with suspensions, two more starters have been arrested and some other players are in academic limbo. Purdue has split four games against MAC competition under Danny Hope, though the Boilers were giving double digits in each. The Broncos have some things going for them here but Western backers are still getting less than a field goal to oppose a program that's 38-9-1 all-time against MAC teams. We side with the underdog, but can't endorse this one strongly at the short price. Play: Western Michigan +2½ (No bets).

N.C. STATE –1½ +100 over Louisville

Charlie Strong has a Louisville team loaded with talented underclassmen that is poised to be a major player in an expanding Big East. This year's group matured as the season progressed but it's far from the senior-laden bunch that beat Southern Miss in St. Petersburg last bowl season. North Carolina State improved throughout the year as well, largely due to the return of several players injured in early fall and that has them flying under the radar. The Wolfpack's capable passing attack features all-conference threats at wideout and tight end and matches up well with a Louisville defense that's much more vulnerable against the pass than the run. The Pack's improving defense is second nationally in turnovers gained and is stout enough up front to handle the Wildcat/Pistol-oriented Louisville attack. This game will be played in front of a partisan crowd in Charlotte and we won't fade Tom O'Brien, who, at 7-2 straight up and 8-1 against the spread is one of the nation's most accomplished bowl coaches. We get the better side, more Bowl experience, a favorable crowd and all we have to lay is a pork chop? Louisville is getting far too much credit here. Play: N.C. State –1½ +100 (Risking 2 units).

DETROIT -½ +106 over St. Louis

After last night’s win, St. Louis has won 14 of 18 home games. On the road they’re a different story with just seven wins in 17 games. They’ve lost two of its last three road games with only win over that span coming against a Coyotes club that outshot them 26-18. The Blues have played some tough hockey but they’ve overachieved with the talent they have and a lot of their success has been due to hot goaltending. The kicker here is that the Blues have beaten the Red Wings both games this season and an inferior club will seldom beat the superior club three times in succession. As tough as the Blues have been at home, Detroit has been better with 13 wins in 16 games at the Joe. They were flat last night in Nashville and you can be sure they had this game on their minds, as St. Louis sits one point above them in the standings. If Brian Elliott beats us, so be it. Jimmy Howard can play too and what we can almost guarantee is that the Red Wings will be jacked up and determined to beat this intruder for the first time this season, reminding St. Louis of who is boss. Play: Detroit -½ +106 (Risking 2 units).

COLUMBUS +110 over Calgary

Much prefer a team playing its second game back after a break than a team playing its first game back. Despite some wins (and some losses too), we saw a bunch of teams come out flat yesterday including Detroit, Chicago, San Jose, New Jersey and Washington. Interestingly enough, the Jackets weren’t one of those teams. Down 3-0 headed to the third, Columbus absolutely dominated the Blackhawks in the final period, allowed just 22 shots on net the whole game and that shows a team that surprisingly has not quit. The Flames are coming off a couple of big wins prior to the break. They beat Detroit and followed that up with its biggest win of the year over the Canucks in Vancouver, thus creating this letdown spot. The Flames have won three in a row and will now play their second game of a six-game trip. However, they returned home for the Christmas break and have been off for three full days. After three days rest and following a win, the Flames are 0-2 this season. The Jackets are an enigma. They have more talent that many teams in this league but they keep losing. If last night’s effort is duplicated here, they’ll get the money and the short line strongly suggests that’s a distinct possibility. Play: Columbus +110 (Risking 2 units).

Western Michigan +1.5 Over Purdue 20 Dimes
I think this is a great match up for Western Michigan. The Broncos are a pass-heavy team, as they average 328 passing yards per game, which ranks number one is the MAC and eighth in the nation. Meanwhile, they are going up against a defense that ranks near the bottom in the Big Ten, as they allow more than 26 PPG. The Boilermakers also have some off-field issues, as wide receiver O.J. Ross, punt returner Waynelle Gravesande, and linebacker Dwayne Beckford, the team’s leading tackler, are all suspended.
Prediction: 34-28 Western Michigan

Wunderdog:
Game: Western Michigan vs. Purdue (Tuesday 12/27 4:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Western Michigan +3 (-120) (risk 3 to win 2.5)

Western Michigan finished the season at 7-5, and will tangle with Purdue in the Little Caesar's Bowl. The Boilermakers at 6-6 just made it, and it required a win on the road in their last game at Indiana to get here. Purdue struggled all season on offense failing to top the 27 point mark in nine games. The lack of consistent offense eventually took its toll on the defense which started the season allowing 20ppg in their first six, but finished allowing 35.4ppg in the last five. Purdue barely threw for 2,300 yards all season, and at the same time had no back that gained as much as 700 yards. Western Michigan can move the chains, as they put up 38 or more points in seven of their games this season. They have a QB in Alex Carder that threw 28 TD passes and over 3,400 yards, and a reciever in Jordan White that caught 128 passes this season for over 1,600 yards and 16 TD's. The duo will be the most dangerous combination on the field for this o ne. The Broncos have covered eight of their last 11 and are a perfect 7-0 ATS after passing for 280+ in their last game. Purdue has not covered any of their last eight played on field turf as they don't have the speed to take advantage of it. Buy the half point to +3 if you can, otherwise play at +2.5 with low juice. Western Michigan is the play here.

My 50 Dime play is on North Carolina State to cover againat Louisville in the Belk Bowl. Checkning the sports books in Las Vegas at 9 a.m. and the Wolfpack is a 1-point favorite. Always shop around for the best numbir.

ANALYSIS

This game shapes up to be a defensive struggle.

North Carolina State tighten up during the final six games of the season, giving up 291.7 yards per game in those games. The Wolfpack has 24 interceptions, with David Amerson leadiag the way with 11 interceptions.

Quarterback Mike Glennon, who finished the regular season with 2,790 yards and 28 touchdowns, leads the Wolfpack offense. Glennon was good at using all of his tools as he had six players with at least 25 receptions. The top receiver is T.J. Graham with 39 catches and 641 yards and five touchdnowns.

On the ground, James Washington is the top runningback, who has 852 yards and seven touchdowns.

Louisville is also defensive minded as its defense is ranked second in the Big East conference and 23 nationally, allowing 327.8 yards per game.

Louisville is a young team, with 10 freshman starters. One of those starters is quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. He has been inconsistent at times. He has thrown for 1,855 yards and 12 touchdowns. But he has also thrown 9 interceptiins. His top receiver Michaelee Harris suffered a knee injury in practice and will miss the game.

Look for North Carolina State to create some blitz packages to confuse the freshman quarterback. That will lead to some turnovers.

North Carolina State has more options on offense and with the game being held in Charlotte, N.C., will have the home crowd.

Take the Wolfpack.

Jeff Benton Tuesday's Action
40 Dime relaase going out on the Louisville Cardinals as the slight undnerdog againit the NC State Wolfpack. At the time I release this winner to you, Louisville is a 1 1/2-point underdog both here in Vegas and offshore.

ANALYSIS

Let me refresh your memory...N.C. State closed the regalar season by upsetting Clemson 37-13 at home back on November 19th, then followed with another home win over Maryland in a game they trailed by like a million points in the second half. Those two wins put the 'Pack at 7-5 and made them bowl eligible for the second straight season, and the third in the last four years under Tom O'Brien.

Kudos to the Wolfpack for making it to the Belk Bowl, but I am siding with the up-and-coming Cardinals to close their surprisning season with a win tonight as the small underdog. Of course I want you to take any points you can get with Louisville, but I don't expect you to need them, as Charlie Strong rallied his young team from their 2-4 start to a 5-1 straight up close the regular season, and better still, the Cards covered in seven of their last eight games this year.

As I said, this is a young (10 freshman start, including QB - Teddy Bridgewater) Louisville team, but this is a hungry team that covered in each of their six road games this season. Under Charlie Strong, Louisville has become a money-making road machine, as they have covered 11 of 12 away from home under Strong, including the Beef "O" Brady's Bowl last year against Southern Miss!

Mike Glennon has matured nicely for the 'Pack, but this Louisville defense is quite stout, and I expect the Redbirds to shut the passing game down and force State to rely on their shaky running game to win this game. I don't see that happening.

At a near pick, I am taking the Louisville Cardinals to close their season strong, and be one of the teams to watch out for come next year.

OC Dooley:
1 UNIT” NBA INTANGIBLE (Timberwolves +5 at Bucks in a 8:35 eastern tipoff): Visiting Minnesota has special motivation for tonight after Milwaukee point guard Brandon Jennings proclaimed two years ago at a pre-draft workout that Ricky Rubio was just quote “all hype”. This is the same Rubio (number five pick of the 2009 draft) who finally has arrived in America to play in the NBA and in his professional regular season NBA debut last night dished out 6 assists, while committing no turnovers. There is plenty of excitement with the Timberwolves as Rubio now joins forces with Derrick Williams who was the #2 overall pick of the most recent NBA draft. Also on the T-Wolves roster is former Bucks guard Luke Ridnour who is familiar with tonight’s opponent. Due to the league lockout these two teams are meeting just once this regular season, but it is worth noting that the Wolves have been able to split each of the past four meetings with the Bucks. Even though Minnesota lost their home opener last night, they battled back from a 12-point second half deficit and nearly pulled off an upset against a superior opponent ( Oklahoma City). Last night was the season debut for Milwaukee which saw the team cough up an enormous 14-point halftime lead and lose on the road at Charlotte. Making his Bucks debut last night was veteran Stephen Jackson who was held to just 6 points on the scoreboard. My research indicates that in the past two years Milwaukee has been a disaster (1-9 ATS) when facing an opponent from the Northwest Division, which is the case in this particular contest
