Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's Best NBA Bets

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-9, 196)

Miami heads into Saturday’s date with the Pacers just 1.5 games back of the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Bulls and while there are lots of games left in the regular season, they’re already keeping a close eye on the standings.

Miami has won 11 of its last 13 after downing Atlanta 89-86 on Wednesday. LeBron James posted 31 points and 11 rebounds, but couldn’t do enough to help the Heat cash as 12.5-point favorites.

"At this point of the year, you start looking at tiebreakers," forward Shane Battier told reporters. "That's a big issue when it comes to the playoffs, and so, obviously, you want to win the season series against the teams you may play in the playoffs.”

The Heat have covered just once over the last four games and are now 20-19 against the spread this season. They’ll probably continue to see fat lines down the stretch, but you have to wonder about their value as the season wears on.

That said, after a couple of days off, Miami should be able to beat up on the Pacers.

Pick: Heat

Memphis Grizzlies at Phoenix Suns (2, 193)

Phoenix is another team that knows how important wins are right now.

With a big win over Dallas, a team the Suns hadn’t beaten in nine tries, they at least stayed within view of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

"We couldn't lose both of these (Oklahoma City and Dallas) and stay in the playoff picture," Steve Nash told reporters. "It's an early crunch time for us. We've got to keep crawling back to that eight-nine-ten spots and try to give ourselves a chance to sneak in there."

The next week or so will probably play a huge role in whether Nash stays with the team too. He has been mentioned in trade rumors for much of the season, but if Phoenix thinks it has a shot at the playoffs, the club will need the veteran point guard.

We like Phoenix to ride the momentum of its big win over Dallas into this one.

Pick: Suns

Saturday Early Action
By Kevin Rogers

Championship week continues as we count down to Selection Sunday tomorrow. Many automatic bids have been handed out while teams on the bubble are looking to solidify an at-large invitation. We'll take a look at three of the afternoon contests, starting with two old rivals getting together in Atlanta.

N.C. State vs. North Carolina

The Wolfpack continues to scratch and claw their way to a potential at-large berth following victories the last two days against Boston College and Virginia. The triumph over the Cavaliers as three-point underdogs helped out N.C. State, but a win over top-seeded North Carolina will leave the committee with zero doubts about handing the Wolfpack a berth.

The Tar Heels barely cashed as 15-point favorites in an 85-69 rout of Maryland on Friday, improving to 27-4 overall. UNC is stepping closer to a third showdown against Duke potentially in Sunday's conference championship, but first the Heels need to beat the Wolfpack for the third time this season. Roy Williams' squad covered in both victories over the Wolfpack, including a 74-55 drubbing of N.C. State in Chapel Hill as 13-point 'chalk.'

UNC is riding an 8-1 ATS run since the late meltdown to Duke at home in early February, including a 4-0 ATS mark when laying at least nine points. The Wolfpack has covered five consecutive games, while cashing the 'over' in seven of the previous eight contests.

UMass vs. St. Bonaventure

Both these teams picked up underdog victories on Friday, while the Minutemen pulled off a nice upset of Temple, 77-71. UMass takes on a St. Bonaventure squad that hung on to beat St. Joseph's, 71-68 as two-point 'dogs. The Minutemen picked up their 20th win over Temple, but UMass still looks to be on the tournament bubble.

In the only meeting of the season, UMass grabbed a 76-67 victory as three-point home favorites on February 8. The Minutemen rallied from a 10-point deficit, while taking an 18-point lead with four minutes in regulation to run away from the Bonnies. St. Bonaventure finished conference at 3-5 SU/ATS on the road, but the Bonnies owned a 9-0 SU/ATS mark in A-10 play as a favorite.

Inside the conference, UMass covered consecutive games four times (including Friday's win over Temple). However, the Minutemen failed to cash each instance following back-to-back covers, which is something to keep an eye on heading into Saturday.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan State

The Spartans still have an outside shot of claiming a top seed in the NCAA Tournament if Tom Izzo's club can win the Big 10 tourney. Michigan State attempts to beat Wisconsin for a third time this season on Saturday, as the Spartans dumped Iowa as 11½-point favorites, 92-75. The Badgers basically led from start to finish in Friday's victory over Indiana as short underdogs, 79-71, as Rob Wilson drilled seven treys in the win.

Michigan State took care of Wisconsin in Madison on January 3 in overtime, 63-60 as 6½-point underdogs. Both teams shot poorly from the field as the Badgers hit just 33% from the field, while the Spartans made 40% of their attempts. The Spartans pulled off the sweep in East Lansing on February 16, a 69-55 triumph as six-point 'chalk.' Michigan State shot significantly better the second time around against the Wisconsin defense by knocking down 52% from the floor.

The Badgers are in the midst of a 4-6 ATS run, but has cashed in their last two opportunities as an underdog against Ohio State and Indiana. The Spartans are rolling with a 9-4 ATS mark the last 13 games, including eight victories as a favorite.

SEC Tournament: Semifinals Preview and Picks

Florida Gators vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-9.5, N/A)

THE STORY: No. 19 Florida and No. 1 Kentucky are more accustomed to playing in the final of the SEC tournament, but meet this time in the semifinals. Their last three meetings in the tournament have come in the title game, with Kentucky winning in 2004 and 2011 and Florida prevailing in 2005. Kentucky handily dispatched the Gators twice during the regular season, winning by 20 in Lexington and by 15 in Gainesville in the regular season finale. Kentucky’s defense will be tested by Florida’s explosive offense, which leads the league in 3-point shooting.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (31-1): The Wildcats had their hands full in the first game of the tournament, but placed four in double figures and beat LSU with a strong second half. Kentucky won despite getting no points from Darius Miller and only two from Marquis Teague. Their ineffectiveness was offset by a pair of double-doubles from Terrence Jones and Anthony Davis, who sat much of the first half with foul trouble. Davis averaged 19 points and 9.0 rebounds in two games against Florida this year and Jones is averaging 13 points and 6.8 rebounds in five career games against the Gators.

ABOUT FLORIDA (23-9): Florida struggled to hold off Alabama in its quarterfinal, but used clutch free throw shooting (16 of 19) and 10 3-pointers to survive. The Gators broke a three-game losing streak, but were unable to get much traction against Alabama’s tough defense. Florida will need Patric Young to duplicate his effort in the season finale against Kentucky, where he had 21 points and nine rebounds against the Wildcats’ big guys. The Gators will need more production from Kenny Boynton, who had only seven points in the last meeting against Kentucky after getting 18 the first time around.

TRENDS:

- Kentucky is 3-0-1 against the spread in the last four meetings between the two teams.
- Florida is 0-4 against the spread in its last four.
- The over is 36-16 in Florida's last 52 overall.

TIP-INS:

1. Florida averages 10 3-pointers per game, but made only six in each game against Kentucky.

2. Florida has made 19 of 23 free throws in two games with Kentucky; the Wildcats are 18 for 22.

3. Florida reserve Casey Prather was available to play after returning from a lower back injury, but did not play against Alabama.

ACC Tournament: Semifinals Preview and Picks

NC State Wolfpack vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (-9.5, N/A)

THE STORY: Top-seeded North Carolina might not have ACC Defensive player of the Year John Henson for the ACC semifinals. Henson hurt his left wrist in Friday’s 85-69 victory over Maryland when he was fouled hard on a power move. While initial X-rays appeared negative, coach Roy Williams said Henson could not grip the ball after the injury. The 6-foot-11 Henson would come in handy against the Wolfpack, whose strong inside game powered them to a 67-64 victory over Virginia on Friday. North Carolina won the only regular season meeting, 86-74 at home on Feb. 21.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (28-4): Due to Henson’s injury, the Tar Heels got a glimpse of what James Michael McAdoo can do. The 6-9 freshman hit 5 of 8 shots for 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 29 minutes versus Maryland. He is only one of many offensive weapons, including Harrison Barnes (17.4 points, 5.1 rebounds) and ACC Player of the Year Tyler Zeller (16.3, 9.3). But Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said afterward that North Carolina is getting progressively better on defense, too.

ABOUT N.C. STATE (22-11): Sophomore forward C.J. Leslie hit 9 of 11 shots for 19 points and collected 14 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack past the Cavaliers, likely securing N.C. State’s NCAA tournament bid. The Wolfpack are nearly as gifted offensively as the Tar Heels. Point guard Lorenzo Brown ranks second in the ACC in assists (6.4). Forward Scott Wood has buried 15 of his 32 last 3-pointers and leads the conference in 3-point percentage (41.9).

TRENDS:

- The Tar Heels are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight.
- The Wolfpack are 4-0-1 against the number in their last five.
- The over is 7-1 in NC State's last eight.

TIP-INS:

1. Tar Heels point guard Kendall Marshall set the ACC record for assists in a season by dishing out 12 on Friday. He has 310, breaking the record of 303 set by Georgia Tech’s Craig Neal in 1987-88.

2. N.C. State is enjoying its first 20-win season since 2005-06.

3. North Carolina is seeking its third ACC tournament crown in the Roy Williams era.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL Betting Preview
By Bill McBride

Philadelphia Flyers at Toronto Maple Leafs (+120, 5.5)

Short-handed on the back line and not exactly where they hoped to be in March, the Flyers are still firmly entrenched in the Eastern Conference playoff mix and will be looking to make quick work of the downtrodden Maple Leafs on Canada's primetime stage.

Backing the Bryz

Philadelphia fans are a fickle lot, and it's tough to impress them when there's not a large body of work to draw from. It took them two years, for instance, to fall in love with Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. And though he's in midst of his second year, they're still not crazy about Sixers guard Evan Turner yet.

Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov was headed down the same path in his first Philadelphia season, mainly because he wasn't playing all that well. But just as the year has hit the homestretch, the enigmatic netminder has settled into the role. He’s making the saves Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren always thought he would, when he traded for and signed him in the summer.

In fact, Bryzgalov, a former Phoenix Coyote, is undefeated (4-0) in March, has two shutouts and has allowed just five total goals in that span. He's been a prime factor in the Flyers easing into the No. 4 and No. 5 mix for Eastern Conference, and it appears his best days are still ahead.

From bad to worse

Much more went wrong for Toronto Tuesday than their 5-4 loss to the Bruins. In the road defeat, they lost left wing Joffrey Lupul to a separated shoulder. He will be sidelined for three to four weeks. Lupul was having a tremendous season, with 25 goals and 67 points. He wasn't been afraid to mix it up either, racking up 48 minutes in penalties.

How important is he? Consider the next night, without him and in virtual must-win mode, the Leafs were listless in a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh. Lupul was injured on a hit from behind into the boards by Boston's David Krejci, and though he could be back in time for the final week of the schedule, it's also possible he won't take the ice again this season.

New Toronto coach Randy Carlyle's job was already tough enough. Without Lupul it sinks to a new level of difficulty.

Danny not delivering

Though things are well in Philadelphia right now - the Flyers are scoring goals, the patchwork defense is getting by and there's stability in goal - imagine how much better they'd be if forward Danny Briere was actually producing.

Briere, playing in his 800th game Thursday, didn’t score a goal for the 21st consecutive contest in a 5-0 decision over Florida at home. In fact, in 57 games this season, he has just 13 goals and 36 points. Keep in mind, this is a player who has topped 30 goals four times in his career and 20 goals six times.

For now, Philadelphia is not suffering through this slump along with Briere. But if this keeps up, the Flyers' stay in the postseason might be a short one.

History

The Flyers have won both games in this series, including a 4-3 decision on Feb. 9 in Philadelphia. Both games, including the Flyers' 4-2 win on Oct. 24 at home, have gone over. But beware of Philadelphia on Saturdays. They have lost three of the last four Saturday contests overall.

Montreal Canadiens at Vancouver Canucks (-230, 5.5)

Two Canadian teams on the opposite end of the playoff spectrum collide in Vancouver. The Canucks have a battle on their hands for the No. 1 seed in the West. But for them, it's simply a matter of staying healthy and getting ready for the second season, regardless of seed, as they try to undo last year's runner-up finish.

Team USA

Vancouver’s radio team was calling them the All Americans. They’ve also been tabbed the American Express Line. But call them what you will but when head coach Alain Vigneault teams up American forwards Ryan Kesler, Chris Higgins and David Booth, good things happen. And that’s all that matters for the Canucks.

The Canucks outlasted Winnipeg, 3-2, to snap a modest two-game skid Thursday. In the win, Kesler scored his 20th goal of the season, Higgins notched his 22nd assist and together, the trio combined for 16 shots on net.

They’ve all been good, but the key is Kesler, who has battled back from injury. And though he won’t get to the 41 goals he notched last season in his breakout campaign, he is rounding into form at the right time.

Scott on the spot

After missing two games with a right eye injury, embattled Montreal veteran forward Scott Gomez returned to the lineup Thursday, as the Canadiens defeated Edmonton, 5-3.

It is still hard to believe that Gomez, who won two Stanley Cups with New Jersey in 2000 and 2003, has just two goals on the season. But perhaps his brief respite will get him refocused. He didn’t have a shot against the Oilers, but finished with an assist - his ninth of the year - and was a plus-1.

In a campaign where nothing has gone right for the Alaska native, he’ll take anything he can get and that was a good start.

Alexander the Great

Lot of critics questioned whether letting skilled defenseman Christian Ehrhoff go at the end of last season's disappointing finish in Vancouver was the right thing to do. After all, Ehrhoff was a big part of a team that did stretch the Stanley Cup final to seven games.

But Alexander Edler has made fans forget about Ehrhoff, now with the Sabres. In fact, Edler scored the winner against Winnipeg Thursday and now has 10 goals for just the second time in his career. He also has 33 assists for a career-high 43 points.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound left-handed shot never had more than 161 shots on net in a given season before this one. This year, with his total of seven from Thursday night, he now has 193.

History

The Canadiens are going nowhere fast, and have a ton of questions to answer before they start playing meaningful games again, but don't sleep on them versus Vancouver. In fact, in the last three meetings against the Canucks, dating back to Nov. 9, 2010, Montreal has won two of the three against the defending Western Conference champions. Two of those three games have gone under.

Ice picks: Saturday's Best NHL Bets

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders (+115, 5)

When Ilya Kovalchuk is on a hot streak, there may not be a more dominant player in the league.

He scored three times on four shots against the Islanders Thursday, helping the Devils to a 5-1 win. He now has five points in his last two games and leads the team with 29 goals and 67 points in 62 games.

"He is definitely the most-skilled player I've played with," goalie Martin Brodeur said. "Not to take away from some of the guys I've played with throughout the years, but this guy is special. It's how explosive he is on his skates, how strong he is with his legs that makes him such a tough player to defend.”

The Islanders know how dangerous he is, but there just isn’t much they can do to contain Kovalchuk when he’s flying like this.

New York has won just three of its last nine and only two of its last eight meetings with the Devils.

Pick: Devils

San Jose Sharks at Phoenix Coyotes (-105, 5)

Both the Sharks and Coyotes are desperate to put an end to their perspective losing streaks.

Phoenix has lost five straight and has dropped to seventh place in the West, while San Jose has lost four in a row and sits just a point behind the Coyotes.

San Jose dropped a 4-3 shootout decision at Dallas on Thursday, but did pick up a point for the second straight game.

"For a team that has struggled to score lately, for a team that has struggled to put up any offensive opportunities, we had a number of really good looks at the net," McLellan said. "We had at times real good traffic. ... There will be some nights coming up when those will go in and we'll have plenty of it (goal scoring) to win.”

The Sharks also had 48 shots on goal in that loss, so they may be on the verge of snapping this skid. It’s hard to say the same about the Coyotes, who just dropped consecutive games to the Blue Jackets and Wild.

Pick: Sharks

Dallas at Golden State

The Mavericks look to bounce back from last night's 110-97 loss to Sacramento and build on their 5-1 ATS record in their last 6 games after allowing 100 or more points in the previous game. Dallas is the pick (+3 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Warriors favored by only 1. Dunkel Pick: Dallas (+3 1/2). Here are all of today's picks

3 UNIT PLAY

MEMPHIS -10 over Marshall: Memphis gets this game at home and they have crushed conference USA opponents on their home floor this year. Including their first 2 games of this Tourney Memphis has 9 Conf USA home wins and 7 of them have been by at least 18 points, while for the year they have outscored their Conf USA foes by 20.2 ppg at home when they win the game. Now that's domination. Marshall though was one of the teams that they did not crush at home as they won by just 7 points in that game and that may have them a bit more focused here as they know this team is dangerous. This is Marshall's 4th game in as many days and after a 4OT game a couple days ago and a solid upset vs Southern Miss yesterday this team may not have a lot left, especially at the pace that Memphis will set. The Tigers have played great defense at home this year, where they allow just 57.7 ppg on 35.85 shooting, while Marshall allows 68.4 ppg on 44.7% shooting on the road. The Herd does average 67.6 ppg on the road, but they don't shoot all that well away from home (42.4%). Memphis, on the other hand, scores 73.9 ppg on a very solid 48.5% shooting on their home floor this year. Memphis has all the edges in this game and playing at home makes them all the more stronger here. They should win this one by 15+ points.

2 UNIT PLAY

Michigan State -4 over Wisconsin: My pick to win the Big 10 Tourney is the Spartans and I'm not gonna back down from them here. Wisconsin had a great game yesterday, but the fact is that this team is still not a great scoring team and they are going up against a much tougher defensive team than they faced yesterday. State has allowed 70+ points in each of their last 3 games, but prior to that they had allowed just 51.8 ppg in their previous 7 games. Now that's playing some defense. Wisconsin will not shoot as good as they did yesterday, while Michigan State has more than enough offense to score on this team. Sparty also see a window to a number 1 seed now that Kansas lost and that should have them even more focused here. I look for a close game to be broken open midway through the 2nd half as Michigan State moves close to the Big 19 tourney title.

LEE EARNEST

Not a bad day yesterday as I managed to go 7-4-1 overall yesterday. That Florida game really pissed me off though. That's another example of how not to finish a game. I never understood the mentality of teams building this huge lead early only to give it all back and almost have to fight just to win the game. It really baffles me. If it's going to be a close game, thats fine I can handle that but don't go out and play good basketball with your foot planted firmly on the gas only to let up halfway through the game and let the other team back into it.

Another big card today as tournament play continues. Only part of the lines are out for the games this afternoon so I will release my early plays now, and be back later once the lines are up and deliver the rest of my card. Here is who I will be playing today: BOL to you.

NASHVILLE -½ +122 over Detroit

The Red Wings victory over the Kings last night looks pretty decent on paper when you consider that they were down 3-2 with just under four minutes to go. Two late goals propelled Detroit to victory but pretty it was not. Jonathan Quick had a rough game, allowing four goals on just 15 shots. The Red Wings looked quite tired and now they get right back to work to play the tail end of back-to-backs against the surging Predators. Incredibly, it's been close to six weeks since Detroit has played back-to-back games dating back to January 16-17 when they played Buffalo and Dallas on consecutive nights. Things get much tougher against Nashville and its 22-8-5 home mark. This is the hottest ticket of the year. The place will be rockin' and you can expect the Preds to treat this one like a playoff game. If they have any hopes of passing the Red Wings in the race for home-ice advantage in the playoffs, this is the game they must have. In the Predators past 14 home games, they've lost just once in regulation. They're rested, they're much healthier than the Red Wings, they have an edge in net and they catch the Red Wings at the perfect time. Play: Nashville -½ +122 (Risking 2 units).

Jimmy the Gent Sports Plays

Well with only 2 days left until selection sunday, lets see what "gifts" are out there for this saturday. ive been up capping since early morning hours and i found plenty of matchups that look solid,as that seems to be the case in recent weeks because im averaging about 10 plays a day in recent weeks and that is only because its "house money" i love variety and am not one for labeling games as "30 dimes or 50 dimes" or 100* locks like other peeps out there, like i use too ,because it all gets garbled and lost in the long run, because what really matters is %, wins and losses, and what you do with your money is up to you,but i will say if you throw a little extra on "coldcocked, bookiebasher, pod, etc or anything i got in parenthesis" those are the "marque picks" i dont know what my record is on those so i will have to look. anyway im only stating this because ive had several emails asking about this, so there is my answer, i know i pick way more winners than losers, ya there will be bumps, but in the long run , i have always come out on top.just remember my motto is "Confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong" and i can say that this year im right on target to get to my usual 63 % . so with that said lets have a look at todays games shall we.....
