Hondo

Hondo zipped right along with the Mets yesterday and then scored again with the Giants, whose conquest of the Small Bears completed the sweep and lowered the NRN (nasty red number) to 1,720 mcauliffes.

Today, Mr. Aitch, operating on the theory that The Great Verlander can’t lose them all, once again will back the Tigers ace with a 10-unit play.

PHILADELPHIA +101 over Miami Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
Just 3½ games separate first and last in the NL East with all five teams above .500. This combination of Miami and Carlos Zambrano is one that is worth fading, as Miami is hitting an abysmal .213 on the road and Zambrano is flashing a nearly identical skill set that resulted in a 4.82 ERA one season ago. The difference for Zambrano has been better luck (30%/69% hit %/strand% in 2011, compared to 24%/78% this year). Zambrano’s velocity is continuing its free-fall. His average fastball velocity is 88.9 mph so far. He'll have value in flashes but once his 24% H% and 78% S% normalize, his ERA will be lucky to stay below 4.00. Joe Blanton shut down Miami on April 12 (7 IP, 1 ER) and a 3.46 xERA paired with his outstanding control (10 BB in 62 IP) makes him one of the higher-upside pitchers in the league right now. Blanton’s 5.05 ERA is sure to come down at some point and while Zambrano’s is sure to rise. The misleading numbers on both these pitchers has the Fish falsely favored here and that’s reason to step in. Play: Philadelphia +101 (Risking 2 units).

CHICAGO -1½ +127 over Seattle Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
The Mariners ended Chicago’s nine-game winning streak last night but needed 10 runs to do so. With Kevin Millwood on hill, they may need another 10 runs here and chances are they’ll be hard-pressed to score against Chris Sale. As for Millwood, he has great numbers in recent starts but he has benefited greatly from a favorable hit/strand profile and he has terrible matchup numbers against the South Side. Current White Sox hitters have 46 hits in 137 career AB’s versus Millwood for a BA of .346. They also have a .385 on-base %, a sick .555 slugging % and a .940 OPS. Since May 14, a span of nine games at home, the White Sox are averaging 8.4 runs per game. When Millwood faced Chicago at pitcher-friendly Safeco on April 22, he was tagged for five runs in 5.1 innings. In 33 career AB’s against Chris Sale, current Mariners have struck out 14 times. That’s no surprise, as the Seattle lineup strikes out more than any other AL batting order (7.6 times per game). Sale has allowed one earned run or less in five of his past six starts and struck out 15 in his last start. Dating back to 2010, the South Side is 19-4 in their last 23 games against the M’s, with the White Sox outscoring them 125-62. Play: Chicago -1½ +127 (Risking 2 units).

MTi's TOP PLAY (FIVE-Star)
5-Star PHILADELPHIA +100 over Miami - It's been over two years since the Phillies were a home dog on Sunday. The pitching match-up was Jamie Moyer vs Johan Santana. The Phillies won 11-5 as a 125 underdog. The Phillies should support Blanton well vs Zambrano.
Indeed, Blanton's numbers are not good recently. However no Philadelphia starter comes CLOSE to Blanton's profitability when starting at home vs an NL foe. Blanton is 30-11 in his career at home in league play, for a profit of 14.3 units. Halladay is 25-12 for MINUS 0.75 units. Oswalt is 13-5 for plus 3.68 net units. Cliff Lee is 17-10 for MINUS 1.55 units. Hamels is 55-32 for MINUS 3.99 net units. And Kyle Kendrik is 30-21 for plus 2.50 units.

This season, Blanton is 3-1 at home vs an NL foe, and it was the bullpen that took the loss.
The last three times Zambrano has faced the Phillies, he allowed 5, 5, and 7 runs respectively.
The Marlins were in a great spot yesterday and eked out a 5-4 win. However, they are 0-6 in the last game of a series when their opponent is seeking immediate revenge for a one-run-loss in which they held the lead. The SDQL text is:
team=Marlins and p:margin=1 and SG=SGS and po:BL>0 and 20100601<=date
Check out the last active date - Zambrano allowed seven runs in five and a third and lost 8-4 as a 155 favorite.
The Phillies and Blanton will have their game faces on here whereas the Marlins will be soft. Our OU for the runs Zambrano will allow is 5.5.

4.5-Star LA DODGERS +110 over Colorado - The Rockies are a very streaky team and it took the Dodgers a couple of tries to check their momentum. We expect LA to win again here.
Colorado is MISERABLE in this spot. First of all the Rockies are 6-20 in the last game of a HOME series during the day. This season, the Rockies are 0-4 on Sunday in the last game of a home series.Even worse, Colorado is 1-10 as a day favorite in the last game of a series when they are off a loss - including 0-6 their last six. Brutal.LA finally broke their long losing streak and they know what to do with the momentum. The Dodgers are 15-0 after a multiple-run win in which they scored at least six runs and hit at least one home run. Check it out with this SDQL text:team=Dodgers and 6<=p:runs and p:margin>1 and p:HR>0 and 20110824<=dateLA is 6-0 in this spot in 2012. The tide has turned for these teams and the when it turns, there's no stopping it. Take the Dodgers. MTi's FORECAST: LA DODGERS 6 Colorado 3

1* Tampa -145 over Baltimore (1:30pm)
1* TB -1.5 runs +150 over Baltimore - Baltimore is in 1st with smoke and mirrors right now. They need pitching help badly. Arrieta has been sub par all year and got roughed up badly when facing TB earlier TY. Moore has allowed only 8 ER in his last 20 IP so he has been pitching better. The key for Moore is attacking the strike zone. When he does it, he pitches well. I am looking for him to keep the BB's down vs a free swinging O's line up. With Baltimore scoring 2 runs or less in 6 of L7 games, I think Tampa pulls out a nice win here.

2** Seattle +160 over Chicago White Sox (2pm) - Millwood is throwing the daylights out of the ball right now. L4 starts 27.2IP and 2 ER. We aren't talking vs Oak, Sea, and SD here either. 2 starts vs Texas, the NYY and @ Colorado. Sale is coming off the 15 strikeout game. A special game like that is tough to follow up with another good game, especially for a young pitcher. Seattle has won 3 of 4. worth a good shot at this price. Heat will pull away late

Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics

The home teams are undefeated though the first three games of each NBA
Conference Final, as the Boston Celtics (48-34, 42-38-2 ATS) got back into their
series with the Miami Heat (56-24, 41-39 ATS) for now with a 101-91 win
Friday. Thus the Celtics now trail the series 2-1 and they are probably still
lamenting losing the back-and-forth Game 2 in Miami in overtime. Boston now
gets a chance to even things up at home at TD Garden in Boston, MA on Sunday
night at 8:30 ET on ESPN.

Game 3 of this series had much the same feeling as Game 3 of the Western
Conference Final between the Spurs and Thunder, with the home team (in this
case the Celtics) playing with a sense of desperation and the team up 2-0
(Heat) playing with a noticeable lack of energy. The fact that the Celtics only
won by 10 points as opposed to Oklahoma City's blowout might be seen as a
negative sign for Boston's chances in this series though. Rajon Rondo followed
up his historic 44-point, 10-assist performance in Game 2 with another fine
showing, scoring 21 points and adding 10 assists and six rebounds, and each
member of Boston's Big Three (Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen) scored
in double digits also. Unfortunately that accounted for over 80 percent of
the scoring as Brandon Bass scored just four points while in constant foul
trouble and the bench added a total of 19 points. Boston did shoot an even
50.0 percent from the field (38-for-76) and it out-rebounded Miami 44-32, as
couple of examples of the Heat not bringing their usual intensity with a 2-0
series lead. Even with all that, Miami still would have been right there at
the finish if it didn't shoot a dismal 10-of-20 from the foul line compared
to the Celtics' 20-of-26.

Therefore, the Heat may have come away feeling good about themselves
despite the loss, especially since they shot 49.4 percent from the floor
themselves (38-for-77) with many of those being easy drives to the basket while
pushing the ball up the floor following made Boston baskets while taking
advantage of the Celtics' slow transition defense. LeBron James led both teams with
34 points on 16-of-26 shooting, but he carried the load mainly by himself as
Dwayne Wade had a rather quiet 18 points and Mario Chalmers added 14. It
seemed that the Miami offense played in spurts as the Heat scored exactly 28
points each in the first and fourth quarters but a grand total of just 35
points in the middle two stanzas. In fact Miami went over nine minutes without
a field goal from late in the first quarter to the middle of the second
quarter, which was when the Celtics built a double-digit lead and they were
never headed the rest of the way.

Believe it or not, the Celtics are now 6-1 against the spread in all the
head-to-head meetings between these clubs this year combining the regular
season and playoffs, with the only cover by the Heat coming in Game 1 of this
series when Miami was fresh and Boston was playing just with just one day off
following a seven-game series vs. Philadelphia. Even more incredibly, Boston
is now 9-1 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings here in Boston,
although the lone Miami cover was a huge one as it came while winning Game 4 of the
Eastern semifinals in overtime last season with these teams in the exact
situation they are in now, with the Heat leading 2-1.

Pick: Miami Heat-1

double-dime 973 Oakland (+117)
Analysis: Getting the A's at a plus price with Tommy Milone versus Vin Mazzaro is a nice bonus.

Milone is the better pitcher. He's allowed two or fewer runs during three of his last four starts. Mazzaro is a minor leaguer in my book.
The A's are feeling better about themselves after ending a nine-game losing streak. It's a big plus for Oakland that Yoenis Cespedes is back from the DL.

The Royals have won just six of 24 home games.
