Celtics at Heat Game 5: What bettors need to know

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 179.5)

THE STORY: The Eastern Conference finals are now a best-of-3 series as the Miami Heat host the Boston Celtics in Tuesday’s Game 5. Boston swept two home games and evened the best-of-7 series at 2-2 with a 93-91 overtime victory on Sunday. Rajon Rondo hit the go-ahead hoop for the Celtics and Dwyane Wade missed a final-second 3-pointer for the Heat. It was the second overtime contest of the series as Miami notched a 115-111 victory in Game 2.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Rondo had 15 points and 15 assists in Game 4 and has 13 double-digit assist games in the postseason. Magic Johnson (14 in 1991) and John Stockton (14 in 1992) are the last players to have more in a single postseason. Forward Paul Pierce scored a team-best 23 points but the most pleasing sight was guard Ray Allen draining four 3-pointers on the way to a series-best 16 points. Allen’s shooting has been suspect due to an ankle injury. “My legs have gotten considerably better,” Allen said. “Just starting the game and having my legs underneath me is a huge deal.”

ABOUT THE HEAT: Forward LeBron James scored 29 points and Wade tallied 20 but Miami’s top player in Game 4 was forward Udonis Haslem. The nine-year veteran had his second double-double of the series with 12 points and 17 rebounds. James had 29 points and fouled out for the first time since joining the Heat, rendering him a spectator for the final 1:51 of overtime. “Not stressed the series is tied 2-2,” James said. “It’s great basketball, great competition.” Miami is holding out hope that forward Chris Bosh can return from a lower abdominal strain to play in Game 5. Bosh has missed nine straight games since being injured against the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the second-round series.

TRENDS:

- Heat are 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games.
- Celtics are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
- Under is 25-9 in Heat's last 34 home games.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Rondo has 38 career 10-assist playoff games, tying Hall of Famer Bob Cousy for Boston’s franchise record.

2. Wade is shooting just 25.8 percent from the field and averaging 5.5 points in the first half during the series.

3. Celtics forward Kevin Garnett had 17 points and 14 rebounds in Game 4 for his third double-double of the series and 12th of the postseason.

French Open odds: Day 10 match analysis and picks

Bricker hit both of his Day 9 plays and is 15-10, down 0.83 units during the tournament.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic (-588) vs. No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (+345)

The head-to-head history is 5-5 and Tsonga, with his big forehand, has been a problem in the past for Nole, who is clearly not as mentally confident in the long rallies as he was on his 2011 streak. Still, he took down Jo 7-5, 6-1 in the Rome quarters a couple weeks ago and Djoko's great returns will take some juice out of J-W's big serve. I'm thinking Tsonga is going to be still a bit mentally sapped after the Wawrinka match.

Pick: Djokovic.

No. 3 Roger Federer (-286) vs. No. 9 Juan Martin Del Potro (+205)

It's difficult to pick against Federer and his 11-2 lifetime edge here, but he has looked curiously out of sync for extended periods in all four of his matches. Meanwhile, Delpo had a strong showing two days ago in taking down Tomas Berdych. Hunching here.

Pick: Del Potro.

No. 6 Samantha Stosur (-182) vs. No. 16 Domenika Cibulkova (+130)

You have to like Cibulkova's nerveless win over No. 1 Victoria Azarenka two days ago and I just don't trust Stosur any longer in big matches. She's had a cozy draw here against players ranked 68, 112, 29 and 70.

Pick: Cibulkova.

No. 10 Angelique Kerber (-167) vs. No. 24 Sara Errani (+125)

The German has an important win over Flavia Pennetta, but hasn't looked like a Top-10 much of the tournament. Errani, meanwhile, has been super-hot. Her problem here is uncharted waters. This is her fifth French and she's never been previously past a second round. This is for a spot in the semis. Lots of tension.

Pick: Kerber.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-2, 3.60 ERA)

Two of MLB’s hottest starters share the mound Tuesday in Cincinnati. Burnett hasn’t allowed a run in his last 12 1/3 innings spanning two starts and has won three in a row overall. After the Cardinals pounded him for 12 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in early May, he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in an outing in five starts.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (4-3, 3.73 ERA)

Bailey is coming off a complete-game 8-1 victory over Pittsburgh that saw him allow one run on four hits. The Reds have won each of his last four trips to the bump, while Bailey has walked only five batters during that stretch. Bailey threw 77 strikes on 103 pitches against the Pirates and didn’t allow a hit over the last four innings.

Slumping

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (0-3, 2.90 ERA)

Dempster has pitched well this season for the most part but still hasn’t won a start since Aug. 16, 2011. He wasn’t at his best last week against the Chicago White Sox, giving up three two-run homers and walking four before hitting the showers after only 4 1/3 innings. Dempster supporters are down 4.89 units this season.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (2.6, 5.82 ERA)

The Giants are riding a six-game losing streak with Lincecum on the mound. He limited Arizona to one earned run on four hits in his last turn, but still walked five batters and allowed a home run. The good news is that he pitched seven innings for just the second time in six starts.

Tuesday’s betting tips: Can A.J. Burnett’s hot streak last?

Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics – 15 mph winds expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

NBA: Celtics are 7-1 ATS in their last eight meetings with Miami.

MLB: Pirates are 5-0 in A.J. Burnett's last five starts.

MLB: Giants are 6-2 in their last eight meetings in San Diego.

WNBA: Under is 14-6 in the Liberty's last 20 home games.

Who’s not

NBA: The over is 9-25 in Heat's last 34 home games.

MLB: The under is 0-7 in the last seven meetings between the Astros and Cardinals.

MLB: Cubs are 1-10 in their last 11 meetings in Milwaukee.

WNBA: The Atlanta Dream are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall.

Key stat

17.4 – The New York Liberty lost their first five games of the season by an average of 17.4 and didn’t cover the number in any of those losses. They finally rebounded to post a season-high 87 points in a blowout win over Indiana in their last outing, covering as 3.5-point underdogs. The Liberty look to build on that win Tuesday as 2-point favorites at home to Atlanta.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins – Mauer left Sunday’s win over Cleveland with a right thumb sprain and is considered day-to-day. He is hitting .298 with three homers, 25 RBI and 31 runs scored for the Twins, who average only 3.96 runs per game (23rd in MLB).

Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 179.5)

Notable quotable

"I think we've had one practice maybe since the Atlanta series - or during the Atlanta series. I don't know if we've had one. It's not by choice. I mean, it's by need. It's what we have, so we have no choice in the matter. We're just too old. We're tired and old and banged up. I just look at it that if I have a choice between the legs and the brains, I'm going to take the legs every single time.” – Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers about his team’s practice schedule in the playoffs. The Celtics weren’t expected to practice Monday, before Tuesday’s Game 5, either.

Notes and tips

Cleveland Indians catcher Carlos Santana is expected to be activated before Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers. Santana has been on the disabled list since he suffered a concussion May 25 when a foul tip hit his mask in Chicago. He took batting practice, ran the bases and worked a bullpen session Sunday without problems. He was scheduled to DH for Class-A Lake County on Monday night. Santana is battling .245 with five home runs and 24 RBI.

Kurt Busch has been suspended from this weekend's activities at Pocono Raceway by NASCAR as a result of his actions in the Nationwide Series event at Dover International Speedway this past Saturday. Busch was already on probation because of a run-in with Ryan Newman's crew following the May 12 Sprint Cup event at Darlington Raceway. After his fourth-place finish in Saturday's Nationwide race he verbally berated a reporter. “It refrains me from not beating the s--- out of you right now because you ask me stupid questions,” Busch said in a video posted by Speed Channel. “But since I'm on probation, I suppose that's improper to say as well.”

New York Mets left fielder Jason Bay is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday. The team thought it might ease Bay back into the lineup as a DH in its upcoming interleague games, but his rib injury looks to have healed enough that he’ll also play the field Tuesday. He’s hitting just .240 with three homers and five RBI in 15 games this year.

Pittsburgh +136 over CINCINNATI Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
Not many people look at the daily standings in MLB so it might surprise you to learn that the Pirates are 27-26 and in second place in the NL Central, just three games back of these first-place Reds. The Bucs have managed to get above .500 despite an awful team batting average of .222. The Pirates are very likely to boost that batting average and when they do, more victories should follow. A.J. Burnett is out of the spotlight in New York and he’s responded rather well. Burnett has flashed a new profile in his first stint in the NL, as he’s now a command artist with just 14 walks in 50 innings to go along with 42 K’s. He also owns an elite 58% groundball rate and that’s more significant at this park than most others. Burnett’s 3.09 xERA suggests that his 3.60 ERA and 1.24 WHIP are no flukes. Homer Bailey went the distance against the Pirates in his last start and needed just 104 pitches to do so. He’s now won three straight and has posted a 2.53 ERA over that span. How many times have we seen a pitcher of Bailey’s caliber dominate a team and then blow up a week later when facing the same team? It seems to happen quite a bit and Bailey has never showed any prolonged consistency. The table is set nicely here and we’ll take our seat.Play: Pittsburgh +136 (Risking 2 units).

Los Angeles +169 over PHILADELPHIA Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
The Dodgers took the best record in the NL into Philadelphia last night and proceeded to take the opener in this series. The Phillies have now dropped three in a row at home while scoring just eight runs over that span. Cliff Lee needs no introduction. He’s a model of consistency and his 3.00 ERA is backed by full skills support. However, he’s winless in eight starts and that first win gets more difficult with each passing start, knowing that it’ll be another five day wait if he doesn’t get a win here. With the Phillies struggling at the plate and with the ongoing absence of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, laying a tag like this is too risky when the game could very well be decided by the pens. Chad Billingsley has been wildly inconsistent this season but we’ve come to expect that from him. What is evident is that he’s capable of throwing a gem, as evidenced by a 55%/27% dominant start/disaster start split. Billingsley’s skills are above average with 60 K’s in 62 frames, a groundball bias profile and a 3.72 xERA. Phillies are overpriced here. Play: Los Angeles +169 (Risking 2 units).

MIAMI -8 over Boston: I like the Heat in this one. I expected them to win at least one of the games in Boston, but the crowd gave the C's a bit more energy than I thought they would and they used that energy to take both games. Although Rondo has had a magnificent East Finals series (24.0 PPG, 10.5 APG, 7.0 RPG), he has to be tired after logging 46.8 minutes per game. But at least Rondo is still young at 26 years old, which is not the case for Garnett (36), SG Ray Allen (36) or SF Paul Pierce (34), who played 43, 46 and 39 minutes, respectively on Sunday night. This team has to be tired. Miami plays excellent at home and they have outscored their opponent by 11.5 ppg on this floor this year, plus Boston does come in having lost their last 4 on the road by an average of 8.5 ppg. The Heat may also have the added bonus of getting Bosh back in this one as well. The Heat has lost just 6 times on this floor and after coming out flat in their last 2 games they will look to put the Celtics away early. Boston will fold in the second half of this one as the heat win by 15+.

NBA

Boston at Miami (-8) 8:30 ET ESPN

2* Boston +8

The expected return of Chris Bosh to the lineup keeps this line propped up. Miami will look to reverse the series momentum following a pair of losses to the Celtics in Boston. At the start of this series, I mentioned that more than one respected Eastern source mentioned that this was the matchup Miami feared most. A quick review of the season series tells us why. The Heat stands 3-5 SU against Boston this season with only 1 win (in Game #1 of this Playoff series) by more than 8 points. The change of venue will certainly help the Heat but the matchups dictate that the clever Rondo can again frustrate Miami defenders and the experienced play of the Celtics has proven they are quite competitive against a Miami team who seems more focused on the officiating than their opponent.

WNBA

Atlanta Dream at NY Liberty (-1-) 7:05 ET

2* NY Liberty -1

Atlanta enters off a 94-92 loss to the Sky in which they were outrebounded 48-23 and canned just 5/22 three's. This has been a resilient team who has not lost consecutive games in the regular season since August 2nd. Led by Angel McCoughtry and her 23 PPG, the Dream will hope to duplicate the 100-74 win over NY earlier this season. That was part of an 0-5 SU, ATS start for the Liberty in which they had been outscored by 16 PPG. Following a 91-68 Saturday Night loss to the Fever, they had had enough. They bounced back with an 87-72 win in revenge vs. Indiana led by 25 points from lead guard Cappie Pondexter. This is revenge game #2 which I expect them to get in style.

Game: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee (8:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Milwaukee -150 (moneyline)

The Milwaukee Brewers have a tremendous upside at home where they won a MLB leading 57 games a year ago. They face a Chicago Cubs team that is about as close as a team can come to being an automatic road fade. The Cubs have dropped 11 straight games on the road, managing just 14 runs in the last nine of them or about 1.5 per contest. Even Ryan Dempster and his respectable 2.90 ERA are not good enough as he is still seeking his first win of the season. Since allowing 8 runs at St. Louis all the way back on April 27th, Yovani Gallardo is pitching at full potential, not having allowed more than 3 runs in any start since. The Cubs are just 1-10 here in their last 11 and have dropped five straight here to Gallardo. Play on Milwaukee.
