Spurs at Thunder Game 6: What bettors need to know

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 201.5)

THE STORY: After making history with a 20-game winning streak, the San Antonio Spurs will see their season become history if they cannot avoid a fourth consecutive loss to the host Oklahoma City Thunder in Wednesday's Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. The Thunder moved within one win of the NBA Finals with a 108-103 victory in San Antonio on Monday night - giving them a chance to close out the series on their home floor, where they are 7-0 in the playoffs.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS: In an attempt to slow the Thunder's momentum, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich inserted sixth man Manu Ginobili into the starting lineup for the first time in the playoffs and was rewarded with a game-high 34 points Monday night. The move came with a cost, though. The Spurs' bench was outscored 42-22 and the team committed 21 turnovers, including five apiece by Ginobili and point guard Tony Parker, who has struggled with his shot and has only 12 assists against 11 turnovers since a 34-point effort in Game 2. San Antonio has made two valiant fourth-quarter comebacks in the past two games but it continues to be plagued by a second-quarter malaise, falling behind by double digits in the first half of the past three contests.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: On the verge of blowing a 13-point fourth-quarter lead, reigning Sixth Man of the Year James Harden drilled a long 3-pointer inside of 30 seconds to put the Spurs on the brink of elimination. Oklahoma City has been able to build early double-digit leads in the past two games with minimal contributions from three-time scoring champion Kevin Durant, who had 22 of his 27 points in the second half. Russell Westbrook had a near-disastrous sloppy stretch late in Game 5, but he negated that by scoring 23 points and posting a season-high 12 assists. With Harden averaging 19 points in the series, the Spurs have not been able to match up defensively, one reason why the Thunder are scoring 107.5 points per game in the last four.

TRENDS:
- Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as an underdog.
- Thunder are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.
- Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Thunder can become the 15th team in NBA history to erase a 2-0 deficit and win a best-of-seven series.

2. After going 50 days without a loss, the Spurs have been beaten three times in five days.

3. San Antonio has never won a playoff series when forced to play a Game 6 on the road. The Spurs won in Dallas in Game 6 in 2006, but proceeded to lose Game 7 at home.

Kings' crazy playoff run makes bettors' cups runneth over
By JASON LOGAN

The Los Angeles Kings are staring hockey history in the face, up 3-0 against the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings’ improbable run as a No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs is one of the most unbelievable stories in NHL lore and could tie the legendary 1988 Edmonton Oilers for the greatest postseason run with one more victory. Los Angeles, at 15-2 in the postseason, can match former King Wayne Gretzky, who led Edmonton to a 16-2 mark en route to a Stanley Cup victory in ’88.

Not only is L.A. rewriting the NHL history books, but it’s also having a lasting impact at the sportsbooks. Its 15-2 record has produced a stunning 13.34 units during the postseason, including more than 11 units on the road where Los Angeles is a perfect 10-0.

The Kings opened the playoffs as a +2,500 long shot to win the Stanley Cup. But after shocking top-seeded Vancouver in five games, they quickly jumped up the futures board. They knocked off No. 2 St. Louis in four games and trumped the Phoenix Coyotes in five to win the Western Conference title.

They entered the Cup final as -185 series favorites and now sit at -3,300 to win the franchise’s first championship heading into Wednesday’s Game 4. With the sweep in reach, Los Angeles could continue to dish out the big paydays. It opened the Stanley Cup Final at +800 to win the series in four straight games.

The Kings opened as -160 home favorites for Game 4, while the Devils are priced at +135. Los Angeles took the first two games in the Garden State, winning both 2-1 in overtime. It rolled over the Devils, 4-0, at home in Game 3 Monday.

The chances are slim for New Jersey, who entered the final as a +165 series underdog. Only three teams in NHL history have come back to win after trailing 3-0 in a series - 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders, and the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers. The ’42 Maple Leafs were the only ones to do so in the Stanley Cup Final.

Devils at Kings Game 4: What bettors need to know

New Jersey Devils at Los Angeles Kings (-180, 4.5)

THE STORY: The Los Angeles Kings are a win away from their first Stanley Cup title - and they'll have the Staples Center crowd on their side as they look to complete the sweep Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils. The Kings are coming off what may have been their best game of the postseason, a 4-0 victory highlighted by Jonathan Quick's third shutout of the playoffs. The young netminder is considered the odds-on favorite to take home the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Kings finish off the Devils in Game 4.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE DEVILS: Nothing is going right for New Jersey, which now needs to post four consecutive victories against one of the most dominant teams in playoff history. Even veteran netminder Martin Brodeur, who appeared to have turned back the clock in the first three series but stopped just 17 of 21 shots in Game 3. The Devils had their chances to generate offense in Monday's defeat, but finished 0-for-6 on the power play. That included a stretch of 5-on-3 hockey that lasted more than a minute. "We've got to win four straight," said Devils forward Zach Parise. "That's our approach. Win the next one. That's all we can do."

ABOUT THE KINGS: Los Angeles has taken a level-headed approach to the postseason, and being a game away from the most coveted award in pro hockey hasn't changed anything. "We can't take anything for granted," said Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. "It could have been two-nothing for them before (Game 3)." Special teams was the difference Monday night, as the Kings killed off all six New Jersey man advantage opportunities while going 2-for-2 on the power play. The second statistic is more notable, given that Los Angeles had gone five games without scoring a man-advantage goal.

TRENDS:

- Kings are 9-1 in their last 10 playoff games as a favorite.
- Under is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings.
- Under is 3-0-1 in the Devils' last four overall.

OVERTIME:

1. The Kings are the first team to take a 3-0 lead in each series since the playoffs expanded to four best-of-seven rounds.

2. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs are the only team in NHL history to rally from a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup.

3. A win in any of the next four games would make Los Angeles the first No. 8 seed to capture a Stanley

French Open odds: Day 11 match analysis and picks

Bricker was 1-3 in Day 10, dropping his record to 16-13 in the tournament, down 5.36 units.

Got scorched Tuesday, losing three out of four, but Juan Martin Del Potro had me excited with a two-set lead on Roger Federer. Here are the four singles matches on Wednesday.

No. 2 Maria Sharapova (-455) vs. No. 23 Kaia Kanepi (+280)

Sharapova is cutting down on the double faults, but she continues to have problems with big hitters - and Kanepi is a big swinger. With No. 1 Victoria Azarenka out of the way, Maria is closing in on the only Slam she hasn't won, and that's high motivation.

Pick: Sharapova.

No. 4 Petra Kvitova (-526) vs. No. 142 Yaroslava Shvedova (+320)

Shvedova is the longest of long shots, but they love her in Kazakhstan. That's the flag she's flying, even though she was born in Russia. It's the money. No chance here.

Pick: Kvitova.

No. 2 Rafael Nadal (-3333) vs. No. 13 Nicolas Almagro (+790)

I've never seen Rafa playing better or more consistently on clay. He's more aggressive. His serve is more varied. He looks unbeatable. Nadal leads 7-0 head-to-head and 5-0 on clay, a surface on which he's lost only one set to Almagro.

Pick: Nadal.

No. 4 Andy Murray (+130) vs. No. 6 David Ferrer (-182)

Murray holds a 5-4 career edge here, but is 0-3 against Ferrer on clay. Now put aside the lifetime series. Ferrer has been dominant with his consistency and his extremely quick feet. Doesn't have the biggest game, but he'll have Murray talking to himself. Andy had more back discomfort in his gritty win over Richard Gasquet two days ago.

Pick: Ferrer.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (5-3, 5.55 ERA)

Scherzer has been throwing fireballs over his last three starts. He has won each of those outings and the Tigers have won all five of his last turns in the rotation. In his last three, the St. Louis native has struck out 30 batters while walking just five. The only downside to his streak is that he’s allowed at least one homer in seven consecutive outings.

Felipe Paulino, Kansas City Royals (3-1, 1.70 ERA)

Paulino has quickly become the Royals’ ace after pitching shutouts in four of his six starts this season. The big righty held the Athletics off the board for six innings last week, striking out five and walking three. With a fastball that averages in the mid-90s, he’s always been a big punch-out pitcher, but now he’s keeping the ball down and limiting his walks.

Slumping

Wei-Yen Chen, Baltimore Orioles (4-2, 3.75 ERA)

Chen allowed five earned runs in the first inning last week before settling down a bit to pitch 5 1/3 innings. He also struggled with his control, walking five batters. The Orioles have lost each of his last five trips to the mound and the lefty is working on a fat 7.31 ERA over that span.

Bud Norris, Houston Astros (5-2, 4.52 ERA)

Norris was one of the most profitable pitchers on MLB’s money list standing up until his last two starts. He was smoked for seven hits and nine earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings during last week’s loss in Colorado. The allowed three runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in another loss before that and is reportedly dealing with a hip flexor problem that could have something to do with his slump.

Wednesday’s betting tips: M’s starter going on short rest

Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics – 12 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

NBA: Thunder are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.

NHL: Kings are 9-1 in their last 10 playoff games as a favorite.

MLB: Home team is 5-0 in umpire Alfonso Marquez's last five games behind home plate. He's scheduled to work Wednesday's Royals-Twins matchup.

WNBA: Minnesota Lynx are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall.

Who’s not

NBA: Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.

NHL: Under is 1-4-1 in the Devils' last six road games.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs are 0-4 in Paul Maholm's last four starts.

WNBA: Seattle Storm are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings with Minnesota.

Key stat

8.5 – The New Jersey Devils have just three power-play goals over the last two series, spanning 35 chances with a man advantage (8.5 percent) and have yet to connect with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup finals. The Devils failed to score on any of their six power plays in Game 3’s shutout loss to Los Angeles and are set as +170 underdogs in Wednesday’s Game 4.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Aramis Ramirez, Milwaukee Brewers – Ramirez sat out his second straight game Tuesday with a strained left quad injury and reportedly isn’t close to 100 percent. He’s hitting just .240 but has five homers and 30 RBI in the middle of the Brewers’ order.

Game of the day

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 201.5)

Notable quotable

“You know, championship teams win on the road, and Oklahoma City just did that. So they've proven they're a championship caliber team. We have to go do that. If we can't win on Wednesday, we're not a championship caliber team. It's as simple as that. You look at anybody who's won championships, and they've won on the road as the process goes along. It's what you do. And they just did it. So we need to do the same thing to hold serve." – San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ahead of Game 6.

Notes and tips

The Seattle Mariners send struggling starter Heator Noesi to the mound Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels on just three days’ rest. Seattle was forced to skip Felix Hernandez in the rotation this time around as the ace deals with a sore back, forcing Noesi to move up. He hasn’t won a start in a full month and gave up three homers and six earned runs before getting the hook after 4 1/3 innings on Saturday. Seattle opened around +140 for Wednesday's game.

The Minnesota Lynx are closing in on the best record to start a season in WNBA history. Minnesota has won its first seven of the year – two away from tying the mark set by the 2001 and 2003 L.A Sparks - but the Lynx feel like they need to be better. They have dropped three of their last five against the number. "We're going to have to clean it up; we're not going to just rest on 'Yeah, we got the win," Maya Moore told reporters recently. "When we play at our best we feel unstoppable, and we still haven't played at our best." Minnesota is a 12-point favorite Wednesday at home to Seattle.

N.Y. Mets +144 over WASHINGTON Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
Prior to scoring seven times last night, the Nationals scored three runs or less in their previous five games. They’ve lost four of six and they’re just too big a risk laying significant juice because of that lack of offense. Edwin Jackson will face a Mets’ line-up with the best road BA in the NL this season. Jackson has been solid this season and his 3.17 ERA comes with full skills support. However, he’s had six quality starts in a row and that’s a rare feat for Jackson. His stock is at its highest point right now and that’s commonly when we become sellers. In two starts, Jeremy Hefner has logged one disaster and one gem. His 5.60 ERA in 18 IP hides his 12 K’s and 1 walk over that span. His 3.52 xERA shows what could have been, if not for a 55% strand rate. Outstanding control has been a part of his skill set in the minors and he's been successful in bringing that to the majors. He's worth keeping on your radar, as his solid skills should bring some excellent results and it could begin here. Play: N.Y. Mets +144 (Risking 2 units).

Los Angeles +106 over PHILADELPHIA Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
The Dodgers go for the sweep here and there’s no reason they can’t get it against Kyle Kendrick. Some recent success, combined with Roy Halladay's injury, has Kendrick moving up the radar board but his 4.35 xERA shows that little has changed. His low strikeout total won't continue to work with a sub-50% groundball rate. His ERA is likely to remain above 4.00 and once the Phillies are healthy, he will head back to the bullpen because that’s who he is. The Phillies continue to struggle at the plate and they’ve won just three of nine games at home against southpaws. They’ll face another one here in Chris Capuano. Capuano has 61 K’s in 68 frames. Prior to giving up seven runs (four earned) in his last start at Coors Field, Capuano had gone nine straight games allowing three runs or less. In eight of those nine starts he allowed two runs or less. We get a tag against a laboring Phillies team with an inferior pitcher on the mound and that sets this one up to step in. Play: Los Angeles +106 (Risking 2 units).

Colorado +128 over ARIZONA Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
Wade Miley has raced out to a 6-2 start and 2.72 ERA. The lefty has quickly emerged as a replacement for ineffective Josh Collmenter and now looks to be a permanent fixture in the Diamondbacks rotation. Miley's surface stats say he's a different pitcher this year but his skills say otherwise. He has an average strikeout rate of 36 batters in 60 innings. His 78% strand rate is suppressing his ERA. His balls in play are being hit at people but will eventually find some holes. Miley has been lucky to strand so many runners on base and avoid home runs. Eventually, Miley's pedestrian skills will shine through and the good fortune will run out. If you’ve made a profit on Miley so far, it’s time to cash out. The Rockies had to be encouraged by what they saw from Josh Outman’s 3.1 innings on Friday as they replacement for Jamie Moyer. He allowed two hits, walked none and struck out five. Outman looked like the promising lefthander whose TJ surgery interrupted a fine 2009. After missing all of 2010 and logging only 58 innings last year, the Rockies plan to extend his pitch count a little more here. In his 8 innings to date, Outman has punched out 14, which definitely puts him on our radar but this one is more about fading Miley. Play: Colorado +128 (Risking 2 units).
