Heat at Celtics Game 6: What bettors need to know

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+1.5, 179.5)

THE STORY: The Boston Celtics are one victory away from being a surprise entrant in the NBA Finals The Miami Heat are one loss away from being stamped huge underachievers. Boston has won three consecutive games to take a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference finals as its veteran group seemingly finds an extra competitive gear when needed. Miami has lost 15 of its last 16 games in Boston and is hopeful of forcing a Game 7 on Saturday.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE HEAT: Forward LeBron James is averaging 31.8 points and 10 rebounds in the series but the pressure is on with Game 6 being do or die. The three-time MVP has a reputation of wilting in these situations, meaning the contest presents a big opportunity for him to deliver a statement-type performance. Forward Chris Bosh returned from a lower abdominal strain to play 14-plus minutes in Miami’s Game 5 loss and is expected to play a bigger role in Game 6. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called for his team to avoid listening to outsiders leading into the pivotal game. “This is what the playoffs are all about,” Spoelstra said. “It tests your collective character and your resolve. And this is the journey that we have to be on right now for whatever reason.”

ABOUT THE CELTICS: The veteran trio of post player Kevin Garnett, forward Paul Pierce and guard Ray Allen were said to be on their last stand entering the series and are on the verge of making it highly memorable if it indeed turns out that way. Garnett had 26 points and 11 rebounds in Game 5 for his fourth double-double of the series and Pierce made a clutch late-game 3-pointer to highlight a 19-point performance. Allen is persevering while dealing with an ankle injury that hinders his shooting. “You have to leave it to fate – whatever is going to happen will happen,” Allen said of the future. “Right now is what you have to be concerned with. We’ll look back over these years at all the opportunities we had, all the great games we played and the big shots that we made. We’ll talk about the tough games. Right now, we are in the present moment and that’s the most important.”

TRENDS:
- Heat are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Boston.
- Heat are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games.
- Over is 4-0 in Celtics' last four overall.
- Celtics are 16-5-2 ATS in their last 23 games as a home underdog.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Heat guard Dwyane Wade scored a series-high 27 points and has four 20-point outings in the series despite shaky first-half play.

2. Boston point guard Rajon Rondo had just seven points on 3-of-15 shooting in Game 5 but recorded 13 assists to break Bob Cousy’s franchise record for career playoff double-digit assists performances with his 39th such game.

3. Miami forward Udonis Haslem has averaged 15.5 rebounds over the past two games and has three double-digit rebound games in the series.

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (8-1, 2.69 ERA)

The Mets have won each of Dickey’s last six starts and he has been next to unhittable over the last three, allowing only one run. He fired a complete-game shutout in his last turn in the rotation giving up seven hits while striking out nine and walking none. He now has 70 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings and with his knuckler dancing, has walked only 17 this season.

Mike Leake, Cincinnati Reds (2-5, 4.95 ERA)

It wasn’t long ago Leake was a frequent resident of the Slumping section, but he’s turning it around. The Reds lost five of his first six starts before rebounding to win each of his last four trips to the mound. He’s allowed only six runs over that span while striking out 22 and serving up just a single home run.

Slumping

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (3-5, 3.75 ERA)

Since a solid stretch from the end of April to the middle of May, hitters have been all over Alvarez. He has allowed at least eight hits in four consecutive outings and has yielded 14 earned runs and four home runs over his three most recent trips to the hill. Even though his strikeout numbers are down this year, he still has that heavy 95 mph sinker and is among the league leaders in ground-ball outs.

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (2-4, 6.98 ERA)

Minor’s last turn in the rotation was skipped thanks to a rainout last week and the club hopes the time off served him well. He has allowed at least four runs in his last six outings and served up 12 homers during that span. The lefty hasn’t won a start since April 19.

Thursday’s betting tips: Bosh ready for more minutes in Game 6

Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics – 13 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

NBA: Celtics are 16-5-2 ATS in their last 23 games as a home underdog.

MLB: White Sox were 14-3 in their last 17 overall heading into Wednesday's action.

MLB: Cardinals are 9-3 in Lance Lynn's last 12 starts.

Who’s not

MLB: Indians are 0-7 in their last seven games with umpire Gerry Davis behind home plate.

MLB: The Cubs are 0-5 in Matt Garza's last five starts.

NBA: Heat are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Boston

Key stat

2- The Boston Celtics have lost just two series in franchise history after taking a 3-2 lead (36-2).

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox – Konerko sat out his second straight game Wednesday after having a loose fragment flushed from his left wrist. He had the same procedure last season and the team hoped he would be able to play Wednesday, he but obviously needs more time. Konerko is hitting .366 with 11 homers and 33 RBI.

Game of the day

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+1.5, 179.5)

Notable quotable

"It's probably like a boxer. You just got to go back to your corner right now. We all just have to huddle up and lean on each other. We're the only people we can depend on right now. That can be a very powerful thing." – Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra after his club dropped a 94-90 decision at home to the Boston Celtics as a 7.5-point favorite in Game 5.

Notes and tips

The Miami Heat don’t know if Chris Bosh will start Game 6 in Boston, but they do plan to use him more than in Game 5. Bosh came off the bench Tuesday and chipped in nine points and seven rebounds in a little more than 14 minutes of work. Bosh missed nine playoff games with an abdominal strain and the Heat went 4-5 against the spread without him.

The Toronto Blue Jays' revamped lineup looked good Tuesday in a 9-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Brett Lawrie, batting leadoff for the first time as a professional, had three hits and scored three runs. Colby Rasmus, batting second for the fifth time, had a career-best five hits, including a two-run homer, and finished with four runs and three RBI. Rasmus is batting .500 (12-for-24) with four homers and nine RBI as the No. 2 hitter. Not surprisingly, the Blue Jays went back to the well with the same lineup Wednesday.

The Cleveland Indians activated Johnny Damon Wednesday from the Paternity List and optioned Luke Carlin to Triple-A Columbus. Damon, 38, is currently hitting .180 (16-89) with nine runs scored, one home run and five RBI in 25 games for Cleveland since being added to the roster May 1. He last appeared in a game Saturday against Minnesota and is 5-for-17 (.294) over his last five games.

CINCINNATI -1½ +135 over Pittsburgh Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)
Mike Leake fought through both on-the-field and off-the-field adversity in 2011, ranging from a shoplifting charge to an awful six-start run at the beginning of 2011 that landed him in the minors. After another shaky start this season, Leake has turned things around with some impressive numbers recently that have us paying attention. His 4.95 ERA is 1½-runs higher than his .3.45 xERA over the past month. He has outstanding control to go along with a heavy groundball bias profile and the Reds have won his last four starts, with Leake allowing just one earned run in three of them. There is real potential for a significant step forward for Leake and against Kevin Correia and the light hitting Pirates, this is an opportunity to seize. Correia is 31-years-old and has spent a good portion of his career in the minors. He has a measly 20 K’s in 58 innings with 19 walks issued. He pitches to contact and at this park, against a team in which current batters have 37 hits in 137 AB’s against him with eight jacks (.887 OPS), Correia’s chances for success are limited. He’s always had HR issues and he comes into this HR park having surrendered four bombs in his last 17.1 innings and that suggests he could be pitching tentatively here. On paper, it doesn’t look like a pitching mismatch but in reality, it is. Play: Cincinnati -1½ +135 (Risking 2 units).

BOSTON +115 over Miami

You think Miami and specifically LeBron James aren’t coming into this game 6 scared? Up 2-0 and seemingly on their way to an easy road to the NBA Finals, the Heat have dropped three in a row to the Celtics and now have to play this one on the parquet floor in Boston, where Miami has lost 15 of its past 16 trips here and seven of eight since Miami’s ‘Big Three’ banded together. While LeBron James is a great player, he still hasn’t proven to have the mettle of what champions are made of. The Larry Bird’s, Michael Jordan’s or Kobe Bryant’s are greats that wanted the ball when it counted most. LeBron doesn’t seem to want the rock and is afraid to shoot when he does. In terms of pressure, it doesn’t get greater than this and if past performance is any indication of what to expect, than James and the Heat are in trouble. The Celtics know how to beat this team and they know how to finish off a team when it counts most. Fear of fading the Heat and misguided perceptions have this one priced incorrectly. Play: Boston +115 (Risking 2 units).

3 UNIT PLAYS

Philadelphia/ LA Dodgers Under 7.5: The Phils need a win in the worst way and the way their offense is going of late they really need a shutdown game from their starter and should get it today with Hamels on the mound. Cole has a solid 2.84 ERA on the year and a 3.07 ERA at home, but more importantly are his numbers vs the Dodgers of late. Cole has a 1.18 ERA in his last 5 regular season starts vs the Dodgers and that includes not allowing a run in his last 2 starts vs them (17 innings of work). As I said the Phils will need a big game from him as they have been struggling again offensively, hitting just .218 and scoring just 2.8 rpg in their last 5 games. The Phils have also scored just 3.5 rpg on their own field this year. Pitching has been very good for the Dodgers of late an it should continue today with Aaron Harang on the mound. For the most part Aaron has done well for the Dodgers, with a 3.90 ERA But he really seems to be settling in as he has allowed 1 ER or less in 4 of his last 5 starts. His games have been a bit high scoring (8.91 rpg), that is thanks to good run support and I don't expect that here vs Hamels. Both pens come in hot as well as the Dodgers have a pen ERA of 1.35 in their last 5 games, while Philly has an 0.60 pen ERA in their last 5 games. I expect a Pitchers duel in game 4 of this series here.

Chicago/ Milwaukee Over 7.5: Matt Garza has always been a really good pitcher... when he pitches at home. But as seen in his last 3 starts (all on the road) we see that he struggles on the road. In 4 home starts this year Matt has a 1.91 ERA, but in 6 road starts he has a 6.10 ERA, including a 9.00 ERA in his last 3 on the road. Matt's starts have averaged 9.5 rpg overall, while his road starts have averaged 10 rpg. He does have a 2.88 ERA in 5 starts vs the Brewers, but 3 of those starts were at home and he has a 5.06 ERA in his 2 road starts vs them. The Brewers have struggled to hit some of late, but they have still averaged 4 rpg in their last 5 games and they average 4.97 rpg at home on the year. Randy Wolf has not pitched well at all this year, with an overall ERA of 6.05, an ERA of 5.16 in day starts and a 4.50 ERA at home. Higames have been high scoring this year as 10.91 rpg have been scored in his starts overall, 11 rpg have been scored in his home starts and 12.43 rpg have been scored in his night starts. Now i know that the OU line is 7.5, but still in each one of his starts at least 7 runs have been scored, so we just need to find one extra run in this one. I don't expect us to be searching for that run at the end of this one, as this game should reach at least 9 runs with ease.
