At 4:05 pm, our selection is on the Washington Nationals over the Atlanta Braves.* Stephen Strasburg takes the mound this afternoon for the Nats, and Washington's a powerful 20-2 in games he's started, provided it scores at least 2 runs while Strasburg is in the game.* And that seems to be a good bet this afternoon, as Mike Minor will be Strasburg's mound opponent.* Minor has allowed 3 runs or more in nine of his last 11 starts, and carries a 6.14 ERA into this day game on Saturday.* And in his three day starts this season, Minor has an 8.59 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP!* In constrast, Strasburg's numbers (which are great in any situation), are best in the daytime when he's 5-1 in his eight starts, with a 2.35 ERA.* These two pitchers matched up on May 26 here in Atlanta, and Washington prevailed by an 8-4 count.* Similar result this afternoon.* Take the Washington Nationals.* Good luck, as always....Al McMordie.

At 7:15 pm, our selection is on the Tampa Bay Rays over Detroit.* Jeremy Hellickson gets the start for Tampa Bay, and he's dominated the Tigers in his career, in stats, if not in wins.* Hellickson's is 1-2 against Detroit, but sports a 1.77 ERA vs. the Tigers.* He also looks to be healthy following his time on the disabled list for an inflamed shoulder.* That injury was no doubt responsible for his worst outing of the season on June 14, when he gave up 8 runs in 3 2-3 innings vs. the Mets.* But he had a strong bullpen session this week, and felt great throwing the ball.* At home this season, Hellickson has a 2.94 ERA, with a 1.20 WHIP, and will be matched up against Rick Porcello, who is struggling this season with a 4.71 ERA (including a 1.75 WHIP on the road).* Besides getting Hellickson back, Tampa's pitching corps will be strengthened by the return of relievers Joel Peralta (who was suspended for eight games), and Kyle Farnsworth (out with an elbow strain).* Detroit's won just 17 of 42 night games, and just 9 of 25 when the total has been less than 9 runs (including last night's 4-2 loss where Justin Verlander was outdueled by David Price).* Take the Rays.* Good luck, as always....Al McMordie.
