Wimbledon Day 6 preview and advantages

We split our Day 5 picks and now sit at 8-2 in the tournament, up 6.20 units.

Ana Ivanovic -200 vs. Julia Goerges +165

Ivanovic is showing flashes of returning to her old form. She played a strong match against Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round, hitting a respectable 25 winners in two sets.

One thing this Serbian hottie has to do though is pick up her game on her first serves. She's serving at around 50 percent through two matches on first serves, which might not cut it against an opponent like Goerges.

Goerges has power in her ground strokes at 5-foot-11 and has dusted off her first two opponents in straight sets. She's serving well with 11 aces through four sets and has a strong first serve percentage, unlike Ivanovic.

Ana has won three of the four meetings between these two brunette beauties, but this Round 3 match should be a battle worth watching.

Advantage: Ivanovic

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (9-3, 2.19 ERA)

Miley has allowed just a single run in each of his last four starts and actually lost one of those – a 1-0 decision to the Rangers which saw him give up just three hits over 7 2/3 innings. The rookie has struck out 28 while walking just two batters over that 30 2/3 inning stretch. He currently sits ninth in MLB starter money standings, having earned 6.72 units for his supporters.

Tom Milone, Oakland Athletics (8-5, 3.83 ERA)

After serving up three homers and allowing eight earned runs in just four innings of work against the Colorado Rockies earlier this month, Milone bounced back with two great starts. He has allowed just one run over the last 16 innings, while striking out seven and walking one. He held the M’s scoreless in a 1-0 win in his last turn.

Slumping

Nathan Eovaldi, Los Angeles Dodgers (0-4, 4.04 ERA)

The Dodgers have lost each of Eovaldi’s last six starts and things seem to be getting worse, rather than better. He was hammered for eight earned runs on 10 hits in his last trip to the mound, which ended up as a 8-0 loss to San Francisco. The Dodgers average only 0.8 runs per game in his six starts to date.

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (3-6, 6.14 ERA)

The Braves have dropped six of Minor’s last seven starts and he’s coming off yet another tough outing against the Boston Red Sox. The BoSox swatted three dingers off him in 4 2/3 innings and he was charged with four earned runs while also walking three.

Saturday’s betting tips: Strong winds on tap for MLB matinees

Weather to watch

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals – 12 mph winds expected to blow out to left-centerfield

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants – 13 mph winds expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

MLB: Nationals are 9-4 in their last 13 road games.

MLB: Home team is 39-13 in umpire Lance Barksdale’s last 52 games behind home plate. He’s set to work Saturday's Red Sox-Mariners matchup.

CFL: Argonauts are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 meetings in Edmonton.

WNBA: Seattle Storm are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

Who’s not

MLB: Rockies are 5-16 in their last 21 overall.

MLB: Marlins are 4-17 in their last 21 overall.

CFL: Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last six games in Week 1.

WNBA: Liberty are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.

Key stat

26 – Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista went into Friday’s action with 14 home runs in the month of June pushing him to an MLB-leading 26 homers this season. The 14 homers set a club record for the most hit in one month.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Plenette Pierson, New York Liberty – Pierson is expected to be out of the lineup for two to six weeks with a calf injury. The 6-foot-2 forward is averaging 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for the Liberty, who average just 70.9 points per game (10th in the WNBA).

Game of the day

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (-140, 9.5)

Notable quotable

"These have got to be the fastest greens I've ever putted on. I don't know, maybe the same speed as Olympic a couple weeks ago, but these have a lot more pitch to them, so if you get on the wrong side of the hole, you've got no chance.” – 17 year-old Beau Hossler on the greens at the AT&T National.

Notes and tips

Houston Astros manager Brad Mills adjusted his outlook on the return of second baseman Jose Altuve from a right hamstring injury. "He hasn't had a setback, but I probably was too optimistic hoping for Saturday," Mills said Thursday before the Astros' 7-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. "And like I said, it's not a setback. Nothing is wrong with him. It's just they feel that they want to make sure that he's absolutely right, so (his return) at the very earliest would probably be Sunday."He entered Thursday third among National League second baseman in All-Star voting despite ranking first in batting (.309) and hits (88) at the position.

Toronto Argos quarterback Ricky Ray will open his season against his former team the Edmonton Eskimos. Ray was traded to Toronto last December in exchange for quarterback Steven Jyles, kicker Grant Shaw, and the second pick in April's draft. Ray struggled in preseason play with his new team, completing eight of 15 attempts for 99 yards and two picks. Most books have this matchup listed as a Pick ‘em.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll has said that Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson will wage a legitimate competition for the No. 1 spot, but it was reported in recent days that the incumbent would go to camp next month atop the depth chart. The reaction that Jackson will get the No. 1 snaps, at least at the outset of camp, has generated mixed reactions both inside and outside of the Seattle organization. Jackson was 7-7 as a starter in 2011, is .500 in his 34 career starts, has a sub-60 percent completion rate, a passer rating of only 77.7 and only a few more touchdown passes than interceptions (38-35).

Hondo

The Great Verlander and his Tiger teammates showed no interest in Hondo’s long-running deficit-reduction plan, but the Metamucils and Chisox did, so the dirty digits fell to 1,505 piersalls.

Today, Mr. Aitch will try the Strasburg method of acting like a knowledgeable handicapper -- 10 units on the Nats to do some major damage to Minor.

ML 914 MIL (+100) Justbet vs 913 ARI triple-dime bet

Analysis: PLAY: MILWAUKEE
RATING: TRIPLE DIME PLAY

Yesterday we cashed o ‡ur Top Play as we went with Arizona now today we going to back Milwaukee. We went against Milwaukee yesterday because they were returning home from a road trip and as we have said so many times the first game back at home is usually a bad spot for the Home team. Now it's game 2 back at home and that is a high percentage play for the Home team following a loss. Note that Milwaukee is 80-45 at home the last 2 years. Following a Home loss they are 36-16 the last 2 years. Milwaukee sends Michael Fiers to the mound who is coming off a 7+ inning performance where he gave up 0 runs just 5 hits and struck out 7 against the White Sox in Chicago. The start before that he he gave up 1 run at Minnesota on just 4 hits over 7 innings. This will be the first time Arizona will have faced Fiers which gives him a huge edge. I have Milwaukee winning this 5-3.

ML 911 NYM (-140) Justbet vs 912 LOS single-dime bet

Analysis:
PLAY: NY METS
RATING: SINGLE DIME PLAY

The LA Dodgers are a complete wreck right now at as they are 1-10 in their last 11 games. In their last 5 games they ‡ have scored a total of 2 runs yes just 2 runs in 5 Games. They send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound who is winless in 6 starts and was torched in his last start for 8 runs in 5 innings of work. Santana takes the mound for the Mets and he has given up just 2 runs in his last 2 starts. Santana has owned the Dodgers as he is 4-0 against them and has a ERA of 0.65 yes I said 0.65 ERA against the Dodgers. The Mets are 11-5 against the Dodgers the last 3 seasons. I have the Mets winning this game 4-2.

Wunderdog (4-1)(+6.9*) Last night. (14-18-1)(-6Game: Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (1:05 PM Eastern)

Pick: 2 units on New York Yankees -140 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.4)

The Yankees have lost the first two at home in their series vs. the White Sox. Last night they were victims of a 14-run, 19-hit attack. There tends to be an over-reaction to a beating, holding the line in check here. But the reality is that despite having nine pitchers on the disabled list, New York has held 21 of their last 26 opponents to 4 runs or less. The Yankees send Hiroki Kuroda to the mound today, and he has been their best pitcher to date with a 3.40 ERA. After a slow start Kuroda has pitched to a 1.93 ERA in his last six starts. The Yankees have been good at bouncing back, as they are 42-15 after losing the first two games of a series. So despite the two losses here to the Sox, they are 19-7 in their last 26 vs. a team with a winning record. The Yankees have also won 13 of their last 16 vs. a right-handed starter. Chicago is still just 7-15 in their last 22 in new York. Play on the New York Yankees.

Game: Houston at Chicago Cubs (4:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Chicago Cubs -150 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.3)

Neither of these teams will be playing in the postseason. While it looked for a while that the Astros, who lost 106 games last season, were improving, they certainly have regressed back to last year's form lately. Houston is just 10-22 in their last 32 games, and have dropped the first two in this series to the Cubs. The Cubs have played better of late at .500 over their last 10 games, and have played a difficult schedule as well. They have thrived at home vs. losing teams where they are 7-2 since early April. Houston just nine road wins and have been a pathetic 49-104 in their last 153 games vs. a right-handed starter, and are just 18-57 in their last 75 as a road dog, and have won just one time in their last seven here. Play the Cubs in this one.
Game.2*) L/7 days.

Game: San Diego at Colorado (7:15 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Colorado -120 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.7)

The Colorado Rockies have the offense in high gear right now, scoring 21 runs in their last two games. They need it because their pitching is awful. But the problem for the San Diego Padres is that they can't take advantage of it - even at Coors Field, as they were beaten last night 10-2. San Diego has been one of the worse underdogs in baseball over their last 88 times in that role, where they are 26-62. Their offense simply isn't good enough to battle average or weak pitching. In their last 31 games when facing a pitcher with a WHIP greater than 1.30 they are a disappointing 7-24. The Rockies have been feasting at home vs. a road team that is less than .400 as they have won their last five. Play on Colorado.

Game: Boston at Seattle (10:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Seattle +130 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 2.6)

The Boston Red Sox have taken the first two games in this series from the Mariners and will turn to Josh Beckett tonight. Beckett is fresh off the disabled list and will likely be on a pitch count, but he has not performed well this season when healthy especially on the road where he has pitched to a 4.78 ERA. Erasmo Ramirez has a high ceiling and displayed some of that in his last outing allowing 1 run and 3 hits, while striking out 10 in his last outing. Beckett has sure not been at his best vs. losing teams where the Red Sox are just 3-8 in his last 11 starts against them. The M's have regrouped lately off a loss where they are 5-2 in their last seven. Play on Seattle.

2** washington -150 over Atlanta(4pm)
2** Washington -1.5 runs +115 over Atlanta - Strasburg has been a horse for us all year and now we get a slumping Atlanta team with a slumping Minor pitching to boot. I really like this match up as SS has been solid vs the Braves in the past. Minor has had just 2 good starts all year. Minor has a 7.46 ERA in 10 his starts. Atlanta has been scuffling as their starters haven't been going deep into games.

2** Arizona -110 over Milwaukee(7pm) - Tough not to ride Miley here despite Fiers being solid for the Brewers. The Brewers have lost 6 of 7 and have scored 2 or less in 5 of the last 7 games. Miley has been a 1 ER machine with 8 such starts out of 12. Wit hD-backs swinging the bats well, I will ride them here.

2** Oakland/Texas under 11(-110)(7pm) - MLB debut of Texas' #1 ranked prospect Martin Perez. Similar to Bauer for the dbacks in that he is not necessarily overpowering but can devastate with his curve and change up. Milone looks to make a push for the all star team with this one last strong showing.
