Sunday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking

C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees (10-3, 3.27 ERA)

Sabathia didn’t miss a beat in his first start since coming off the disabled list. The hefty lefty tossed six scoreless innings, giving up only four hits and striking out six in a win over Toronto. Sabathia is 3-0 in his last four outings and is 5-1 in his seven starts since May 26.

Slumping

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox (5-7, 4.80 ERA)

Lester is winless in his last three starts, taking losses in his two most recent trips to the bump. The southpaw gave up six earned runs on seven hits in just four innings versus the White Sox Tuesday. Luckily, Lester owns the Blue Jays with an 11-5 record and career 3.20 ERA in 20 starts versus Toronto.

Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals (3-9, 6.35 ERA)

The Royals were sick of looking at Jonathan Sanchez so they swapped one limp arm for another. Sure, Guthrie’s numbers are a bit better than Sanchez’s 1-6 mark and 7.76 ERA, but the former Rockies dud hasn’t won a game since May 31 and is 0-2 in his last four starts since returning to the rotation. Kansas City is hoping Guthrie’s career success versus the Twins – 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA – pays off Sunday.

Hondo

The Giants rallied heroically for Hondo yesterday, taking care of business in Philly to trim the dirty digits to 1,365 keys.

Today, Mr. Aitch expects the Jays to have their way with Jon Lester, aka Jon Lager -- 10 units. Also, he expects a ‘W’ from CC against the A’s -- 10 units on the Yank’s.

ARIZONA -1½ +1 over over Houston
With the demotion of recently called up Trevor Bauer, who was not ready for prime time, Josh Collmenter gets his rotation spot back for the time being. He was the odd man out in the Bauer experiment and has been the odd man out all season but he deserves better. The door now opens for him. Collmenter had two strong starts in July before the demotion against the Brewers and Dodgers. He has 57 k’s in 60 innings with just 15 walks issued and his groundball rate is trending the right way. Collmenter could not have picked a better time for his starting role audition. The Astros have thrown in the proverbial towel after being active on the trade market over the weekend. On Friday, Houston gave away two serviceable major-league pitchers for some Blue Jays prospects that weren’t in the top 17 on the depth chart in the Blue Jays minor league system. In other words they unloaded some salaries for nothing and they did the same yesterday when they traded closer Brett Myers to the White Sox. For a team that has lost five in a row and 18 of its past 20 games, they’ll close out this set having been outscored 25-11 in two games, not to mention the 16 runs they allowed in two games at pitcher friendly Petco Park before this series. That’s 41 runs against in four games and now they’re unloading quality arms. The Astros are a demoralized bunch. Losing is highly contagious and before they even make that difficult jaunt to get to the park today, their mindset is that they’re going to lose. Can this go any other way? We think not.
Our Pick ARIZONA -1½ +100 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 200.00)

Sunday Night Baseball: Rangers at Angels

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (-115, 8)

The American League West race continues to be one of the best and will be featured on Sunday Night Baseball as the Angels host the Rangers.

HAREN'S HOPE

Dan Haren should be activated in time to make Sunday's start against the Texas Rangers. Haren threw a bullpen session Friday and if he feels healthy, he will make the start.

The righty struggled before going on the disabled list. He allowed 23 runs in his last four starts with two of those games coming against Cleveland and Toronto.

Haren faced the Rangers back on June 3 and allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of work, striking out two while walking two others.

SOUTHPAW SUCCESS

Matt Harrison has been incredible for the Rangers this season. He has allowed two earned runs or less in seven straight outings and in nine of his last 10 starts. Harrison's success has allowed for him to win eight of his last nine decisions after a bit of a struggle to start the year.

He has faced the Angels twice this season allowing seven runs and eight hits in just over 12 innings. Harrison's lone awful road start came all the way back on May 2 when he gave up eight runs in Toronto.

TROUT FISHING

Mike Trout continues to amaze those in Major League Baseball. He has hit safely in the first eight games since the All-Star break. He has more than 100 hits on the season in just over 70 games and he is No. 1 in stolen bases.

Before this series, Trout was 10-for-24 against the Rangers with one home run and seven RBIs. Trout has dominated opposing pitchers and he continues to flash speed and power which makes him a tough out at the top of the lineup.

TEAM TRENDS

Rangers are 22-6 in their last 28 Sunday games
Rangers are 14-2 in Harrison's last 16 Sunday starts
Angels are 6-0 in their last six Sunday games
Angels are 10-1 in their last 11 games vs. left-handed starters

HITTERS TO WATCH

Adrian Beltre 24-for-55 vs. Haren
Josh Hamilton 6-for-18 vs. Haren
Erick Aybar 2-for-16 vs. Harrison
Mike Trout 1-for-9 vs. Harrison

Mets -140 over Dodgers
Niece/Eovaldi

The Mets are in a little funk right now, but I think they have the advantage when it comes to pitching Jon Niese can generate a lot of strikeouts and the Dodgers do not put up that many runs against left handed pitching. The Mets do not really have problems scoring runs and if they can get a solid start from Niese should win this game. Take the Mets.
