What bettors need to know: Raiders at Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys at Oakland Raiders (-1, 34.5)

Reggie McKenzie’s first move was hiring Dennis Allen as the Raiders new head coach. Allen, who was the defensive coordinator with Denver last year, inherits a deep but undisciplined front line, one that surrendered a whopping 5.1 yards per rush last season for new defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. Oakland is set on improving and tinkering with its rush defense this preseason.

With Taiwan Jones and Mike Goodson out with injuries, halfback Lonyae Miller has seen an increase in snaps this training camp. Expect Miller to take the majority of the carries on Monday night.

First-string quarterback Carson Palmer and No. 1 running back Darren McFadden are likely to see limited time in the preseason opener. New backup quarterback Matt Leinart should see a significant amount of snaps.

The Cowboys are plagued with injuries.

David Arkin had never snapped the ball for the Dallas Cowboys before getting to training camp two weeks ago but could be snapping for Tony Romo on Monday.

Starting center Phil Costa missed practice Saturday because of a lower back injury and is doubtful against the Raiders. Wide receiver Dez Bryant left practice early Saturday because of hamstring tightness and will be a game-time decision.

Rookie cornerback Morris Claiborne returned to practice Saturday after missing a week with a sprained left knee. He isn't expected to play against the Raiders.

Starters like Romo are only likely to play one series or perhaps up to one quarter.

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

STREAKING

Mike Fiers, Milwaukee Brewers (6-4, 1.80 ERA)

Fiers is in the midst of a breakout season with a 6-4 record, 1.80 ERA while averaging a strikeout per inning at the big league level. He’s won three consecutive starts, only allowing three earned runs during that stretch. His next start is on the road at Coors Field in Colorado.

Alex Cobb, Tampa Bay Rays (6-8, 4.32 ERA)

Cobb struck out seven batters and only allowed one run over seven innings Wednesday against Toronto to pick up his sixth win of the year. This was Cobb's third consecutive quality after netting only one in his previous five outings. He has posted back-to-back wins, only squandering two earned runs during that stretch. He toes the rubber in Seattle next time out.

SLUMPING

C.J. Wilson, Los Angeles Angels (9-8, 3.34 ERA)

Wilson struggled through five innings against the Athletics Tuesday, allowing 14 hitters to reach base. It was Wilson’s second sub-par outing in a row, both against division rivals. The lefty has surrendered 11 earned runs in his last two starts. His next start is at home versus the Indians.

Jeff Francis, Colorado Rockies (3-4, 6.06 ERA)

Francis allowed three runs over four innings during Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Dodgers. The southpaw has been lit up for 14 earned runs in last three starts and hasn’t survived past the fourth inning in each of those outings. He takes the hill at home against the Brewers next.

Washington vs, SAN FRANCISCO
Washington +115 over SAN FRANCISCO
Key matchup sees these two division leaders squaring off for just their second series against one another this year. In the first meeting, back in early July, the Nats swept the Giants in a three-game set and outscored them 24-12. Washington enters this series with a 10-2 record thus far into August.
Pay no attention to Gio Gonzalez’s rough July in which he posted a 4.59 ERA. It was mostly bad fortune, as his xERA over that span was 3.37. Gonzalez has rebounded in his last two outings with a 17/2 K/BB over 17 innings. Gonzalez has full skill support behind his 3.32 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He has 154 K’s in 141 innings, a solid groundball rate of 48% and he has quietly won 14 games, with a 9-2 road mark. The Giants score an average of 3.2 runs per game. If you take out San Fran’s games against the Rockies this year, they average less than three runs a game. Gonzalez should sparkle here against this group.
Ryan Vogelsong continues to defy the odds for the second consecutive year. No matter how you break it down, luck has played a big role in his success. He’s an average pitcher with average numbers. He has 48 BB’s and 105 K’s in 143 innings. His groundball/line-drive/fly-ball rates are also average at 42%/19%/39%. What really stands out is his gratuitous strand rate of 85% and xERA of 4.45. Much like an individual that is winning at the slot machines or Caribbean Stud poker, you cannot violate the mathematical laws of the universe without them catching up to you. Sell high targets don't get any better than Vogelsong.

Analysis: San Francisco v. Washington

Ryan Vogelsong and the Giants are priced cheaply on Monday taking on the Washington Nationals, who are in the midst of a 10-game road trip and a stretch of 17 games in 16 days. Vogelsong has spent the last two seasons being downright phenomenal at home with a 1.85 ERA over 185 innings of work. In five starts since the All-Star break, Vogelsong has a 1.95 ERA and the Giants are 15-6 in Vogelsong's 21 starts. The Giants are a league-best 24-11 against left handed starters this season and they'll be facing one in Gio Gonzalez. With another hit and three walks on Sunday, Buster Posey has now reached base successfully 51 times in 27 games since the All-Star break.

Gio Gonzalez has struggled lately for the Nationals, allowing 19 runs in his last five starts. The Nationals bullpen has been used a ton since the All-Star break, as the Nats are 22-10 in the second half but just +38 in run differential. They've been playing a lot of close games and been involved in a lot of save situations late in the game. They've already played 40 one-run games this season.

It's a good spot for the Giants as the Nats are reaching the home stretch of this long three-city road trip and Vogelsong gets priced cheaply at home where he's a dominant pitcher.

2 UNIT = Washington Nationals @ San Francisco Giants - GIANTS TO WIN (-113)
Listed Pitchers: Gonzalez vs Vogelsong
(Note: I'm risking 2.26 units to win 2.00 units)

Washington snapped their 8 game winning streak with a 7-4 loss in Arizona yesterday. They are now 71-44 on the season and 39-22 on the road. The Giants won their last two games over Colorado on the weekend at home by scores of 9-6 on Sunday and 9-3 on Saturday. They have scored 8+ runs in 6 of their last 10 games, and are now 63-52 and 34-24 at home. Gio Gonzalez will take the mound tonight after a complete game his last start where he threw 117 pitches giving up 9 hits and 3 earned runs against the Astros. He is 14-6 on the season with a 3.32 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and .209 opponents batting average, but his ERA has been slowly climbing as he posted a 4.34 ERA in June, 4.59 ERA in July and has a 3.71 ERA in two August starts. Ryan Vogelsong will pitch for San Francisco to make this a great pitching match up. Vogelsong is 10-5 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and .215 opponents batting average. At home Vogelsong has stellar numbers with a 5-3 record, 1.42 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and .194 opponents batting average. After a shaky April start to the season Vogelsong has pitched to a 1.51 ERA in May, 2.02 ERA in June, 2.18 ERA in July, and a 2.70 ERA over his two August starts, which has put him into Cy Young talks. His last time out he allowed just 3 hits and 0 earned runs over 7 innings in a win in St Louis. Take note that the Giants are 7-3 in their last 10 games overall, 36-16 in their last 52 games as a home favorite, and 8-2 in their last 10 starts vs a lefty starter. The Giants are also 8-1 in Vogelsong's last 9 home starts, and 9-0 in his last 9 starts as a favorite. The Nationals swept San Fran at home earlier this season, but are just 3-9 in their last 12 meetings in San Francisco. Gonzalez hasn't been pitching his best lately and is coming off a long 117 pitch outing, while Vogelsong has continued to be great and especially at home. I like the Giants tonight laying just -113.

2 UNIT = Chicago White Sox @ Toronto Blue Jays - WHITE SOX TO WIN (-119)
Listed Pitchers: Peavy vs Villanueva
(Note: I'm risking 2.38 units to win 2.00 units)

The Blue Jays won on Sunday 10-7 but are just 3-11 in their last 14 games as they are battling a ton of injuries to starters. They have dropped to 54-60 on the season and 29-25 at home. The White Sox are 7-4 in their last 11 after securing a series win against Oakland yesterday with a 7-3 victory. Chicago is now 62-51 on the year and 30-25 on the road. Jake Peavy will pitch for Chicago and he is 9-8 on the season with a solid 3.08 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and .229 opponents batting average. Peavy has started two games against the Blue Jays this season, which were both home wins (4-2 and 4-3). Toronto's most consistent starter, Carlos Villanueva will take the mound tonight and he is 6-2 with a 3.30 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and .223 opponents batting average. Villanueva has been called on to start games due to Toronto's starting pitching problems and is showing a little bit of tiring, although overall he has been solid as a starter. The White Sox are 7-2 in their last 9 games after scoring 5+ runs in the previous game, 7-3 in their last 10 vs a team with a losing record, and 23-10 in their last 33 games as a road favorite. The White Sox are also 13-6 in Peavy's last 19 starts as a favorite, and 6-2 in his last 8 road start as a favorite. The Blue Jays are just 6-20 in their last 26 games as an underdog of +110 to +150. Although they managed to score 10 runs yesterday afternoon the Blue Jays have had massive troubles scoring runs with their lineup that includes a number of Triple-A players, and I expect those scoring troubles to continue tonight against Peavy. Take the White Sox.
