Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

STREAKING

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (7-7, 3.24 ERA)

Fister has been on fire since the All-Star break, going 5-1 with a 1.52 ERA and 48:8 K:BB ratio in 53 1/3 innings. He’s picked up wins in three of his last four starts, only surrendering four earned runs during that span. He takes the hill at Comerica versus the Orioles next time out.

Mat Latos, Cincinnati Reds (10-3, 3.63 ERA)

Latos pitched seven scoreless innings Tuesday against the Mets but walked away with a no-decision. The righty hasn’t been tabbed with a loss since July 17 and has only squandered one earned run in his last 21 1/3 innings. He toes the rubber at home against the lowly Cubs on Sunday.

SLUMPING

Jarrod Parker, Oakland Athletics (7-7, 3.71 ERA)

Parker gave up five runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings against the Royals on Tuesday. He’s now 2-4 with a 6.15 ERA over his last seven starts and during that stretch opposing batters are hitting a generous .309 against him. He looks to turn things around against the Indians in his next start.

Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox (5-10, 5.19 ERA)

Beckett was shelled yet again Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings in Boston's 7-1 loss at Baltimore. He’s 0-3 with a 7.96 ERA over his last five outings and hasn’t picked up a win since July 15. Things won’t get easier for Beckett, as he takes the mound against the Yankees in New York on Sunday.

Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Yankees

The Red Sox and Yankees take center stage once again for Sunday Night Baseball in the Bronx.

THE YANKEES BECKON

Josh Beckett is having a season to forget for Boston, and the Red Sox fans are letting him hear about it. Beckett left a recent start due to a back ailment and he was serenaded with boos from the Fenway faithful. He will be making his second start against the Yankees this season. Back on July 6th, the righty picked up a no-decision after giving up six runs and eight hits in five innings of work. Beckett has allowed four runs or more in two straight outings and in five of his last eight starts overall. He only has nine strikeouts in his last 20 innings pitched. Beckett has not won a road start since July 15th when he beat the Rays 7-3. His other problem has been going deep into games; Beckett hasn't seen the eighth inning since June 6th and that has been taxing the Red Sox bullpen.

THE AL SUITS HIM WELL

Hiroki Kuroda has made his first season in the American League a successful one so far going 11-8 with a 3.06 ERA. He is making his third start this season against Boston after getting no-decisions in his first two tries. On July 29th, Kuroda allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings, but he left the game and Boston won 3-2 in New York. July 6th was another no-decision for the righty after he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in Boston. Kuroda has allowed just three runs in his last four home starts while striking out 18. Kuroda has not had an awful start since that game against Boston, but that game was on the road. The Yankees have scored just nine runs in Kuroda’s last four starts.

THE WALKING WOUNDED

Boston's lineup is without David Ortiz (Achilles) and Will Middlebrooks (wrist). Daniel Nava and Ryan Sweeney are also out for Boston. With regards to pitching, the Red Sox are still without Vicente Padilla, Dice-K Matsuzaka and John Lackey although they have been able to get by with Aaron Cook. New York's lineup isn't at 100% as Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira are dealing with neck and wrist ailments. The rotation is still without CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and Michael Pineda, who was supposed to provide a boost.

TRENDS

*The Over is 6-2-1 in Beckett’s last nine road starts in New York
*Red Sox are 5-1 in Beckett's last six Sunday starts
*Yankees are 43-22 in their last 65 Sunday games
*The Under is 4-0 in Kuroda’s last four home starts

HITTERS TO WATCH

Andruw Jones is 10-for-37 (.270) vs. Beckett

Indianapolis Colts vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

It is only preseason, but Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers
(0-1, 0-0-1) likes to win these games and after losing on a late field goal last
week, he may have his team going full throttle in the preseason home opener
vs. the Indianapolis Colts (1-0, 1-0 ATS). Tomlin is still 16-6 straight up
in preseason as coach of the Steelers after losing to the Eagles 24-23,
while Cots' rookie quarterback Andrew Luck lived up to the hype in a 38-3
destruction of the Rams. The teams get together Sunday night at Heinz Field in
Pittsburgh, PA at 8:00 ET in front of a national television audience on NBC.

As much as Tomlin would love to get that win on a national stage, the
Steelers are a bit short-handed in this game. They are especially thin at running
back, where Rashard Mendenhall will not play this week, although he may be
back soon after being taken off the Physically Unable to Perform List
Friday, and his expected replacement Isaac Redman is doubtful after injuring his
groin last week. Furthermore, third straight running back Jonathan Dwyer
injured his shoulder, although he is probable. Elsewhere, Pro Bowl linebacker
James Harrison will miss the rest of the preseason with a knee injury, veteran
nose tackle Casey Hampton remains on the PUP list and, to literally add
insult to injury, wide receiver Mike Wallace is continuing his holdout. Despite
that MASH unit and Wallace's MIA, Pittsburgh rushed for 131 yards last week
with young Baron Batch leading the way with 41 yards, and quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger was sharp in his brief starting stint, completing seven of
eight passes for 49 yards. The star of the game though was third string
quarterback Jerrod Johnson, who passed for 93 yards, ran for 26 more and
orchestrated to go-ahead scoring drive that ended with a Daniel Hrapmann field goal
with less than two minutes left that gave the Steelers a 23-21 lead before
Philadelphia's kicker Alex Henery kicked the game winner with 12 seconds left.

Luck could have not asked for a better debut as his first play from
scrimmage was a 63-yard touchdown pass to running back Donald Brown, and he went on
to complete 10 of his 16 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns while
playing the entire first half. The new-look Colts finished with 430 yards of
total offense and their brand new 3-4 defense limited the Rams to just 215
yards. Keep in mind that Indianapolis was facing one of the worst teams in the
NFL though, and that the Colts' starters were going up against the St. Louis
reserves for much of the second quarter. The news was not all good for the
Colts however as running backs Delone Carter and Mewelde Moore both left the
game with rib injuries, and more seriously, linebacker Pat Angerer fractured
his foot and will be out for at least a month. The Colts could have an
inside advantage here also as new offensive coordinator Bruce Arians comes over
after spending the last five years in that same position with the Steelers.

This is a rematch of a regular season meeting last year when Pittsburgh
went into Indianapolis as a heavy 10-point road favorite and barely escaped
with a 23-20 victory. Coach Tomlin is 3-2 in preseason Week 2 in his
Pittsburgh career while the Colts were a horrendous 5-25 straight up in preseason in
the last seven years prior to last week, so perhaps new head coach Chuck
Pagano is looking to unstill a winning attitude right away.

KANSAS CITY +113 over Chicago
The Royals are among the hottest teams in the majors right now with 12 wins in their past 18 games. The White Sox have not enjoyed much success against KC this year with just three wins in their past 10 attempts. Chicago is hitting a disastrous 16-87 (.184) with men in scoring position against this team and frustration is mounting.

Jeremy Guthrie has found life outside of Colorado much more enjoyable. He's been a much different pitcher since arriving here, especially in his last two starts in which he has not allowed a run while walking just two and striking out 14. With his experience and the ability to induce groundballs (40%) he gives his side a chance to win. He’s rolling along right now and has a very good history against current South Side batters of 53 hits allowed in 214 career AB’s for a BAA of .244.

Jose Quintana will try and turn things around for his club but his mediocre skills suggest it will be a difficult task. Quintana has a 2.77 ERA in 14 starts but we’re not buying it. He has just 53 K’s in 97 innings and when you pitch to contact you are bound to get burned. Quintana’s xERA of 4.09 and 4.44 over the past 31 days or five starts tell the real story. He’s been a pleasant surprise for the White Sox but ERA regression is inevitable and right now, this is as good a place as any for that to occur.

Miami -1½ +133 over COLORADO
This venue certainly has influence on the posted total of 10 but Drew Pomeranz has a much larger influence on that number than Josh Johnson.

Pomeranz was scratched from his August 15 start due to chest soreness. He hasn't made it past the fourth inning in his past three starts and the Rockies have lost five of his past six starts. Also consider that Pomeranz will not be allowed to pitch deep into this game because of manager Jim Tracy’s strict 75-pitch limit on his starters and that is going to take a toll on the bullpen if it hasn’t already. Pomeranz is 0-4 at home and 1-7 overall with an ERA of 5.04.

Josh Johnson has been on the brink of top tier starter status since June. Over his last three starts, his ERA is 1.99. Johnson has outstanding control, a groundball bias profile and one of the best four-pitch mixes in the majors. He’ll face a Rockies lineup that not only hasn’t seen him much (just 45 career AB’s) but that will also be without their best hitter in Carlos Gonzalez, who is on a leave of bereavement. In those 45 career AB’s, current Rockies hitters have eight knocks against Johnson for a BA of .185.

The Rockies are a mess. They’ve been a mess all year with 45 wins in 118 games. They’re 14 games under .500 at home and will now face one of the most consistent and effective pitchers in the game while sending out a pitcher of their own that can’t go five innings. Chances are the Marlins roll.
