College football Top 25 cheat sheet: Week 1

College football is back - finally. If you're looking to bet big but only have a short amount of time to handicap, let our Top 25 cheat sheet help you out. We grabbed some quick hitting info on each of the Top-25 matchups with odds available in Week 1 of the season:

South Carolina Gamecocks at Vanderbilt Commodores (+6.5, 45)

The Gamecocks have won nine of 11 games against Vanderbilt in Nashville. The road team is 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine meetings.

Boise State Broncos at Michigan State Spartans (-6.5, 46.5)

Boise State and Michigan State have never met – the Broncos lost to Wisconsin in 1997 in their lone game against a Big Ten school and the Spartans are 7-2 against current members of the Mountain West. The Spartans have won 11 consecutive home openers since falling to Colorado State in 1998.

San Jose State Spartans at Stanford Cardinal (-26, 51.5)

Stanford has won the last four meetings since suffering a humbling 35-34 loss to the Spartans in 2006. The Cardinal lead the series 50-14-1. Spartans are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings and 0-7 ATS in their last seven games in Stanford.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Navy Midshipmen (+15.5, 56.5)

After losing to Navy 35-17 in 2010 – a second straight loss to the Midshipmen – Notre Dame rebounded with an impressive 56-14 victory last season, it’s biggest blowout in 2011. Midshipmen are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games as underdogs.

Buffalo Bulls at Georgia Bulldogs (-37.5, 53.5)

The Bulls are 0-3 against current SEC schools. Buffalo won its last game against a Top 25 team, upending No. 12 Ball State in the 2008 MAC championship game 42-24. The Bulls are 1-7 ATS in their last eight non-conference games.

Marshall Thundering Herd at West Virginia Mountaineers (-24.5, 65.5)

West Virginia has won all 11 meetings against Marshall, however, the Thundering Herd are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The Herd has not defeated a ranked opponent since a win over No. 6 Kansas in 2003, a span of 13 consecutive losses.

Bowling Green Falcons at Florida Gators (-28.5, 48)

The Falcons are 3-6 against ranked teams since 2003, with the last victory coming at No. 25 Pittsburgh in 2008. The Falcons are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games as road underdogs.

Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles at Nebraska Cornhuskers (-20, 53)

Since losing the first game of the 1985 season to Florida State, Nebraska has won each of its next 26 season openers by double figures.

Clemson Tigers at Auburn Tigers (+3.5, 55.5)

Clemson has won 21 of its last 27 season openers and seven of its last 10. The Tigers' three opening losses in the past decade have come against top-25 teams. Auburn has won its last six openers and is 92-25-2 all-time in opening games.

North Texas Mean Green at Louisiana State Tigers (-42.5, 52)

During its 37-game non-conference win streak in the regular season, LSU has outscored opponents 1,479-391, including a 1,163-236 margin at home. Over is 4-1 in Tigers' last five non-conference games.

100,000 Unit MUST WIN Saturday Move

Alabama Crimson Tide -14 over Michigan

Only the 100,000 Unit Move is guaranteed.

Bottom line is Michigan just will not win the battle at the line of scrimmage. Alabama will dominate on both the Offensive and Defensive Lines and that will put great pressure on Michigan.

They are not faster than Alabama, they do not have the big game experience Aabama has and Nick Saban, when given a lot of time to prepare for a team almost always outcoaches his opponent. Im thinking 38-14 for a final score. Play Alabama

This is a play on Ohio State.

After surprising everyone in 2010 and winning the Mid-American Conference championship, Miami Ohio immediately returned to mediocrity last year, finishing 4-8 SU.

QB Zac Dysert is back, and his favorite target will once again be WR Nick Harwell. These two will have their hands full this season with a reworked offensive line, and having to shoulder a lot of the load with what is projected to be a weak run game.

When you combine a young special teams unit, the Redhawks actually enter the season with more questions than answers.

Dysert and Harwell are awesome, however, Miami Ohio will be unable to win the war in the trenches, or get its run game untracked vs. this vastly superior Buckeyes unit.

Remember, the Redhawks are just an offseason removed from averaging just 73.8 YPG rushing, while giving up a whopping 44 sacks in all.

Ohio State was 6-7 SU/ATS in 2011.

Coach Urban Meyer has his entire team focused, angry, and ready to start the year:

“I think I have a team that’s chomping at the bit to go play,” Meyer said recently. “And I wanted to have an angry team, a team with a chip on its shoulder. And at this point I’d say we have that. I like where we’re at right now.”

Meyer has implemented a spread attack which he believes compliments sophomore QB Braxton Miller perfectly. Miller benefits from playing behind one of the nation's toughest lines.

The strength of the Buckeyes last year was their defense, and that will once again be the case this season. Last season's interim head coach Luke Fickell is back as defensive coordinator. The line and secondary are very strong, led by standouts DL John Simon and CB Travis Howard.

Meyer is on a mission this year to erase the Jim Tressel era from memory, and an explosive start is just what the doctor ordered for the home side.

This is a classic matchup of "David vs. Goliath", however this time around, Goliath pounds David into the ground; complete mismatches across the board leads to a monster opening blowout for the Buckeyes; lay it and cash it!

This is an eight-unit play.

This is a play on West Virginia.

These team's played each other on September 4th of last season, and the Mountaineers hammered the Herd 34-13. Suffice it to say, I'm expecting an even bigger beatdown this season!

Marshall was 7-6 SU and 8-5 ATS last year.

Head coach Doc Holliday was a former WVU linebacker, and a long-time assistant before taking the head coaching job at Marshall in the offseason.

Note though that Marshall has never beaten the Mountaineers.

QB Rakeem Cato comes into his second year; his favorite target is standout WR Aaron Dobson.

RB Travon Van is expected to step his game up a level this season.

But without a competent offensive line, all of these players are going to struggle, and especially in this first game.

Only two players are playing their same position as a year ago, as the entire line was blown up and reworked in the offseason.

Marshall was a mess at times defensively last year, especially against hard-running teams.

The secondary is a strength of the defense, but will be tested by the Mountaineers devastating arial assault today.

West Virginia was 10-3 SU and 7-6 ATS in 2011.

QB Geno Smith and star WR Steadman Bailey were in fact recruited by Holliday, to which he recently quipped:

“If I knew then what I know now,” said Holliday, “I wouldn’t have recruited them for WVU.”

WVU scored 70 points vs. Clemson in the Orange Bowl to cap the season last year, and comes into this season with high expectation as well.

The offense returns 10 starters, including dynamic WR Tavon Austin.

Smith benefits greatly from standing behind one of the best offensive lines in the country.

The run game has two options, and both are great; if Dustin Garrison slips, then Shawne Alston will carry the load.

The defense is riddled with talent up and down the line, but has a new coordinator in Joe DeForest, changing it from a 3-3-5 to a 3-4.

I don't see the Mountaineers "looking past" the Herd whatsoever here, as this is as tense a rivalry that you'll find in the entire country. WVU coach Dana Holgorsen echoed my sentiments recently:

“Because of how we’ve approached it,” Holgorsen explained about his team's focus.” We haven’t talked about any of the games yet, and once the first game gets closer, we’ll talk a lot about it, and that’s the only one we’ll talk about. We have a lot of coaches who have approached this the same way for a long time, and we’ll keep worrying about ourselves because we have a long ways to go.”

Ultimately though, the Mountaineers high-powered offense will be just too much for the porous Herd, masking any issues that their new look defense may have, as WVU pulls away down the stretch for the comfortable ATS cover!

This is an eight-unit play.

This is a plays on Penn State.

The Bobcats finished 10-4 SU and 7-7 ATS last year.

QB Tyler Tettleton is back to direct a Bobcats team with big expectations. An upset win over the Lions would put them on the radar for a top-25 ranking.

“It’s a big game, a huge game for us,” said Ohio OL Eric Herman recently. “We got a lot riding on this.”

Note though that Ohio has lost seven straight games vs. teams from BCS conferences, and is just 2-11 vs. BCS teams under coach Frank Solich.

The offensive line is solid; so too is the run game. The defensive unit is solid.

But the talented Tettleton has the unenviable task of trying to put together some sort of chemistry with a new receiving corps.

The offensive line will have its hands full today against a much bigger Nittany Lions unit.

PSU was 9-4 SU and 3-9-1 ATS a year ago.

The offseason issues this team has gone through are well documented, and I won't get into any of that in this analysis, but will instead focus on the mental aspect of it.

The PSU home crowd is going to be ballistic today, and the Lions will be playing with a lot of emotion and energy, finally having something to feel "good" about.

The Lions return a veteran front seven, which has picked up coordinator Ted Roof's new schemes very quickly; in fact some think it could be the best defensive line in the entire nation, and ultimately I believe it will prove to be the difference in the outcome of this contest.

PSU has no time to ease into the season, as after this tough Ohio game, it goes to Virginia next week, and then welcomes Navy after that.

New head coach Bill O'Brien is anxious to get started:

“We’re gonna be a multiple personnel team, a multiple formation team, run play-action, empty, change into tempo,” O’Brien said recently. “Hopefully be pretty good in situational football and hopefully we’ll be able to put that out on the field Sept. 1.”

QB Matt McGloin will be utilizing O'Brien's offense that he brought over from the New England Patriots; his favorite targets will be talented WRs Bill Belton and Allen Robinson.

Both sides have plenty of motivation coming into this contest; the external motivating factors are a "wash" here.

The Nittany Lions are the bigger and more talented team on paper. I believe home field advantage can't be overlooked here as the home side wares down its opponent with its superior work in the trenches, and pulls away for the comfortable ATS cover in the end!

This is an eight-unit play.

3 UNIT PLAYS

POWER ANGLE PLAY

Rutgers -20 over TULANE: The Knights lost Greg Schiano and most of his staff to the NFL, but he did a great job of recruiting and they have 15 starters back from last years team that went 9-4, while losing just 14 lettermen overall. This is still a deep and talented team that is one of the favorites in the Big East this year. The Knights come in loaded at the skill positions and their OL is one of the best in the Big East, so I look for their offense to flourish this year. Defensively the Knights have a huge in this game as they have the Best defense in the Big East and will probably finish in the top 15, nationally, in most defensive categories by years end. Tulane is not good on defense. They may be better than last year with 7 starters back, but they allowed 37.5 ppg and 410 ypg, so they have a tone of ground to make up. The Tulane offense does not have a lot of talent and will certainly struggle vs the Knights tough defense in this one. Both teams have new HC's but Kyle Flood was on the Rutgers staff last year so they will not be going through scheme changes, like Tulane will. Rugters also has revenge on their minds after losing at home to Tulane as 17 point favorites back in 2010 and I feel they will get it with a big 24+ point win. POWER ANGLE FOR THIS PLAY--- Play against any team in their season opener if they have a new HC and they won 4 games or less last year and are taking on a team that won 6+ games the year before. This Play is 40-19-3 since 1990.

TEXAS -31.5 over Wyoming: The Longhorns have outscored the Cowboys by 25 ppg in their previous 4 meetings and I feel that Texas can squeeze another TD' out and win by at least 32 in this one. The Longhorns are loaded this year with a dense that may be one of the best in the nation, while an offense that put up 29.1 ppg last year will be even more explosive as they have 9 starters back from that group. David Ash will be their full time QB this year and he has his top 4 pass catchers back from last year and will take aim at a Wyoming defense that allowed 27.8 ppg and 432 ypg last year. Wyoming surprised many last year and it was mainly due to an offense that improved by a TD over 2010. This year with just 5 starters back a weak OL and losing 2 of their top 4 WR's, I just don't see them putting up the 26 ppg they did last year. And especially in this game vs this defense. I just don't see the Cowboys hitting DD in this one, especially since they have averaged just 7 ppg vs Texas in the previous 4 meetings, and this Longhorn defense is better than those editions. Look for a 42-7 win by Texas in this one.

Western Michigan +10 over Illinois: The Broncos have had the Illini's number, going 3-0 ATS all-time and in 2008 they pulled the outright upset and last year they nearly upset Illinois again, losing 23-20 as 14 point dogs. Tim Beckman is the new headman in Illinois and he is 2-1 SU vs Cubit and the Broncos, but 1-2 ATS. Last year he and his Toledo Rockets played a memorable game with a 66-63 Toledo win as 12 point favorites. Tim Beckman should have a good first year for Illinois with 15 starters back, but they are installing new systems on both sides of the ball, but it won't happen right away. They will need a couple of games to gel, but Western Michigan has no new changes and that should give them a solid edge in game 1. The Broncos return 15 starters, including 80% of their OL and Alex Carder (3871 yds, 31 TD's and 14 INT's last year). He did lose his top 3 WR's from last year, but they were deep at that position and have some guys ready to step in. Both teams are set to have solid seasons, but I believe the coaching change will hinder Illinois in game 1 vs a Western Michigan team that may just be the best team in the MAC.

Clemson/ Auburn Under 55.5: Google News Play Last year Clemson allowed 10 TD's in their bowl game and for the year they had allowed 29.3 ppg, so they went out and got a new DC in Brent Venables and along with 7 starters I look for this unit to improve greatly. They will also be chomping at the bit to get out there and make amends for last years defensive bowl debacle. For Auburn they struggled last year on defense as they allowed 28.9 ppg, but they had only 3 starters back from 2010 and this year they have 9 back. New DC Brian VanGorder should have them back playing solid defense in no time. The Biggest improvements both teams have made have been on defense this year and I expect a good hard fought low scoring game in this one.

Texas St. +36½ -105 over HOUSTON
8:00 pm. EST
Generally, we usually avoid games like this but this number is so inflated that we can't walk by. We’re all about value and this one has neon lights all over it.
Houston went 7-0 against the number a year ago when favored by more than three TD’s but this team is a fraction of the Case Keenum-led squad that finished 13-1. More than 50% of the offense is gone and so is head coach Kevin Sumlin. The Cougars still have plenty of offensive talent but there’s an adjustment period with a new coach and system and a big blowout in their first game is a bit of a stretch.
Texas State begins a new era, converting from an FCS team to a FBS team in the WAC division. This veteran club is well aware of the better opportunities that come with that and they’ll be ready. This number is more indicative of how these teams would have matched up last season, as is often the case in week one of college football. In lends an opportunity that would not have been available later in this season.

Point Train's CFB Saturday - Three Plays
6-Unit - #190 Auburn (+3) over Clemson – 6:00 PM CST
After winning the National Championship in 2010-11, Auburn went through a rebuilding year last season. The Tigers had to replace a lot of upper classmen with talented, yet unproven, freshmen and sophomores. The Tigers lost five games to teams that all finished in the top-25 – and three that played in BCS bowls (LSU, Alabama, and Clemson). They return 15 starters, including nine on a defensive unit that could be scary-good. Clemson was not good on the road/neutral sites last season. They were 3-4 in road/neutral sites and allowed an average of 32.8 points in those seven games. Clemson won this matchup at home last year to snap a 14-game winning streak by Auburn. Clemson burned Auburn with 386 passing yards and 238 rushing. Clemson will be without reigning freshman of the year and All-American WR Sammy Watkins (82 receptions, 1,219 yards, 11 touchdowns) who will be serving a suspension here. Auburn’s defense will be amped to avenge that performance
last season we expect AU to come away with an upset here.

Complimentary Free Plays

4-Unit - #161 Ohio (+6.5) over Penn State – 11:00 AM CST
Penn State players and fans will be rowdy for this game. Coaches will have the players riled up from an offseason’s worth of pent-up anger & emotion. That adrenaline can only last so long and Penn State won’t be able to mask its lack of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Penn State has just four returning starters on defense and two on offense and lost a lot of depth after players decided to transfer once the NCAA came down with all of the penalties. Ohio is off of a 10-win season that included a Bowl win. QB Tyler Tettleton returns after tossing 28 touchdowns and rushing for 10 more. The defense should also be strong as eight starters return. Expect the Bobcats to endure the initial wave of adrenaline that PSU will have to start the game and take Ohio plus the points on the road.

3-Unit - #180 Colorado State (+6.5) over Colorado – 3:00 PM CST
Colorado State has 15 returning starters from last year’s squad. The Rams weren’t as bad as the 3-9 record indicated last season. They lost four games by a touchdown or less and had tough games against TCU & Boise State. They do return the top RB, three top WR, and eight of the top 10 defenders from a year ago, so expect a much improved Rams squad this season. The Buffalos, on the other hand, averaged just 19.8 points per game and its defense allowed 36.5 points per game. The Buffalos have just three returning starters on offense (lost its top passer, rusher, and top two receivers). And the defense lost its top two playmakers. This will be another rebuilding year for the Buffs and we like an amped up Colorado State team to cover in this rivalry game. Take CSU plus the points.
