At 1:35 pm, our selection is on the Washington Nationals over the St. Louis Cardinals. What is it about Stephen Strasburg's last start of the month? For the third month in a row, the Washington Nationals righthanded ace stunk it up in his final start, allowing seven runs (for the first time in his career), although only five were earned, in five innings in South Florida in a 9-0 blowout by the Marlins. This comes close to replicating what he did on June 30 in Atlanta (just three innings, giving up three runs in a 7-5 loss) and July 31 at home against Phily (six runs on eight hits in four innings in an 8-0 loss). The good news for the Nats this afternoon is that Strasburg usually begins each month with a very strong outing. Of course, his last start of September could be right around the corner as the GM of the team has famously said that he will shut his ace down at some point before he reaches 200 innings, but for now, Strasburg should be ready to go. The Cards really don't know what to expect from Jake Westbrook, who they signed to a contract extension recently as the veteran righthander has struggled in back-to-back outings and he's facing a very potent DC lineup that he hasn't exactly dominated recently (a 6.23 ERA in 17 1/3 innings). The Nats clobbered St. Louis 10-0 in the series opener on Friday before losing a 10-9 affair yesterday, making the Nats 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in DC heading into Sunday. Additionally, St. Looey has scored 1 run or less in four of its last five games, while Washington has plated 8 runs or more in four straight! Take the Nats. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

At 2:10 pm, our selection is on the Milwaukee Brewers over the Pittsburgh Pirates. And then there was one. Righthander Yovani Gallardo is the only one of the original five Milwaukee starters at the beginning of the season who is still healthy and left on the team. Zack Greinke was traded, Randy Wolf was released, Chris Narveson went out early in the year with a torn rotator cuff and now Shaun Marcum is injured again and could miss a start or two (or more). If there was any doubt about Gallardo's commitment to a team that seems in shambles and his willingness to simply do his best every five days, that doubt has been erased by his recent performance and you can't have a better month as a starter than the one Gallardo had in August. The Brewer ace was 5-0 in his five starts (6-0 going back to his start on July 31) with a 2.02 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He is under contract for two more years (with a team option in 2015) with his salary jumping to about $12 Million in 2014, so if the Brewers are stinking it up next July, expect the Mexican ace to be a hot commodity at the trade deadline especially given his work ethic the past couple of seasons plus the fact that at 26, Gallardo is just now in his prime. Seems like there may be no better way to further pad his stats than another start against the Pirates who he's 8-2 with a 2.14 ERA against in his career. In contrast, James McDonald's numbers vs. the Brewers aren't inspiring (1-2, 6.86 ERA), and Milwaukee's a super 53-13 at home when laying -150 or more. Take the Brew Crew. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

At 8:05 pm, our selection is on the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago White Sox. This prime-time, Nationally-televised game features the best pitching match-up of the weekend, but one of the interesting story lines - besides the fact that the Tigers and White Sox are locked in one of the closest pennant races in baseball - is that both team aces come into this game with each having suffered through one of the worst outings of his career. Sox lefthander Chris Sale lasted just four innings against the Orioles, allowing four runs on six hits while his team was shut out 6-0, while Tigers righthander Justin Verlander gave up eight runs for the first time in his career, as the Royals beat the Tigers 9-8 although Verlander took a no-decision. Verlander seems to be suffering from the same disease as Stephen Strasburg over in the N.L., throwing clunkers in his final start of each month, something he's done every month this season with the Tigers going 0-5 in those outings. Of the two starters, we'll bet on Verlander being the one most likely to bounce back strong tonight as Sale's relative inexperience and the fact that this game is being played on the big stage may rattle the youngster a bit. The fact that Verlander is 19-9 in his career in the month of September doesn't hurt either. Nor does the fact he's led Detroit to 45 wins in 56 games when favored -150 or more. Take the Tigers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
