Bowling Green (+2½) over Ohio U

8:00 PM -- Peden Stadium

Bowling Green (6-3) +2 ½ over OHIO UNIVERSITY (8-1)

Prediction: Bowling Green by 4-7

Played in Athens, Ohio
Played at Peden Stadium (24,000) Artificial Turf
Weather: Cloudy and cold with game-time temperatures in low 30s-high 20s, relative humidity of 63% and wind out of the north at 6 miles per hour.
Starting Time: 8:05
TV: ESPN2

Comments: This is the most important game of the season thus far for both these teams. It’s all on the line tonight. Bowling Green and Ohio are 4-1 in the MAC East standings, trailing only Kent State (5-0), a team both still just play. The winner of tonight’s game will control its own destiny, and its hopes for meeting the MAC West champion for the league championship, because Bowling Green faces Kent State next week and Ohio closes out the season with Kent. Again the importance of this game cannot be under-estimated. Both teams have outstanding quarterbacks, outstanding running games, at least two game-breakers, and always come to play. Bowling Green’s three losses this season have come at Florida, 27-14, at Toledo, 27-15, and at Virginia Tech, 37-0. Ohio has lost only at Miami-OH, 23-20. As evenly matched as Bowling Green and Miami are, the former has one giant edge—a lockdown defense that is nationally ranked 8th of 120 teams, giving up just 290.0 yards per game, and 11th against the score, surrendering just 15.2 points per game. This defense has not allowed a touchdown in its last two games and has given up a total of 33 points and three touchdowns in its last five. Because of this defense, and the importance of this game, the winning edge appears to belong to the Falcons and I do look for them to win straight up.

Mostly cloudy. Winds blowing from the Northeast at 0-10 m.p.h. Game-time temperature: Around 40.

8:00p Bowling Green vs Ohio
Take: Ohio -2½-110 in 6h
20* Bowling Green/Ohio MAC Wednesday ANNIHILATOR on Ohio -2.5

If Ohio wants a shot to redeem itself from last year's loss in the MAC title game, this is a must-win for the Bobcats. They are tied with Bowling Green for second place in the East Division at 4-1 and will eventually get a shot against Kent State (5-0) in the season finale.

I still believe the Bobcats are the best team in this division. They were the favorite to win the MAC coming into 2012, and one 3-point loss at Miami (Ohio) does not change my opinion on them. This is still an 8-1 team that is outscoring opponents by an average of 13.2 points/game.

Ohio is 5-0 at home this season, outscoring opponents 42.4 to 21.4 on the year. It has the better offense in this one which will be the difference in the game. Ohio ranks 28th in the country in total offense (462.2 yards/game), while Bowling Green ranks just 77th in total offense (383.4 yards/game).

Sure, the Falcons have a solid defense this season, but the Bobcats' stop unit isn't too shabby either. Bowling Green is just 2-3 on the road this season as all three of its losses have come away from home. It is scoring a mere 15.4 points/game on the road this year.

Bowling Green is getting way too much respect right now for its five-game winning streak coming in. That winning streak is an absolute joke as they five teams the Falcons have played were Rhode Island, Akron, Miami (Ohio), UMass and Eastern Michigan.

Ohio is 10-1 ATS in home games versus good rushing defenses - allowing <=120 rushing yards/game since 1992. The Bobcats are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record. The Falcons are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 vs. a team with a winning record. Bet Ohio Wednesday.

Bowling Green Falcons vs. Ohio Bobcats
Fans that have become accustomed to witnessing shootouts in MAC conference games could be in for a disappointment Wednesday night when the Bowling Green Falcons (6-3, 6-3 ATS) visit the Ohio Bobcats (8-1, 4-5 ATS), who recently dropped out of the Top 25. Bowling Green has won five straight games while winning with defense, and although Oho has some nice offensive stats, it has not faced the strongest of defenses to this point. You can catch all the action from Peden Stadium in Athens, OH on ESPN2 at 8:00 ET.

This is a crucial game between two teams that are now tied for second place in the East Division of the MAC with 4-1 conference marks, one game behind 5-0 Kent State. Bowling Green has bounced back from a 1-3 start be allowing a grand total of 33 points during its five-game winning steak (6.6 PPG), and the Falcons have now moved up to an amazing eighth in the country in total defense at just 290.0 yards per game, and their recent stifling play leaves them ninth in scoring defense allowing 15.2 points per contest. It is a good thing that the defense has stepped up because the offense has been very ordinary. Only once this season has Bowling Green surpassed 24 points vs. an FBS opponent, and the Falcons rank just 76th in total offense overall while averaging 23.0 points. The one outlier was a 37-12 win over Miami-Ohio three games ago, the very same Miami-Ohio team that handed Ohio its only loss. The defense has been especially suffocating the last two games, with Bowling Green beating Massachusetts and Eastern Michigan by scores of 24-0 and 24-3 respectively. The Falcons' defense should get a stiffer test here.

Oho was in the national rankings at 7-0 before losing at Miami 23-20 in a game that ended with the normally reliable Bobcat quarterback Tyler Tettleton being sacked on the game's final play with the team out of time-outs and in range for the tying field goal. Ohio then rebounded to defeat Eastern Michigan 45-14 last Thursday night. Now, the Bobcats are averaging 35.6 points and 462.2 total yards per game, which certainly looks impressive on paper. Consider though that since upsetting Penn State 24-14 in the opening game of the season, none of the last eight Ohio games has come vs. a team ranked in the top 50 in total defense in the FBS! Moreover, the loss came vs. a Miami-Ohio defense ranked 113th, so do not assume that the Bobcats will have their normal production here vs. the best defense that they have faced since the opener.

Now if you like perfection, and who doesn't, consider that the fine defense and modest offense have combined to make the 'under' 8-0 in all lined Bowling Green games this season! The 'under' is also 7-1 in the last eight Bowling Green road games vs. teams with winning home records. As for Ohio, although the Bobcats hung up 45 points last week, the 'under' is 6-2 in their last eight games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game.
Pick: UNDER 48.5

3-Unit Play #503 Take Washington/Boston UNDER 187 (7:30 p.m. EST, Wednesday)
These teams played Saturday, and the total wound up at 175, a full 12 points under this posted number. While we don't normally like to go with the same result when two teams play in consecutive games like this, we just think this total is way too high and we have to take a shot here. Teams normally make adjustments in these situations, but we expect a low-scoring game here once again and we had this line handicapped at 179 considering that the teams would make adjustments to put a few more points on the board. Let's start with the Wizards. They are dead last in the NBA for offense at 85 PPG. This team is trying to become an elite defensive team in the Eastern Conference. While they don't have the personnel to match the best defensive teams in the east, they really concentrated on protecting the basket during the offseason and they have played pretty good on that side of the ball to start the season. Boston has gotten off to their typical slow start, and after a 100+ point effort in their season opener in Miami they have not gotten out of the 80s in their last two games. That Miami game was played at a very fast pace but this one won't be. The Wizards know their only chance to win is to slow this game down. Also, there is a decent chance this one will be a blowout so Boston might be burning the clock in the fourth, which will help us with the under if the score is close to the bookies' number. Three of the last five meetings between these teams have gone under.

5-Unit NBA Game of the Week #526 Take LA Clippers +1.5 over San Antonio (10:30 p.m. EST, Wednesday)
The Clippers come into this one having lost two straight. However, we predicted they would slump after playing two intense games to start the season. In their wins against Memphis and the Lakers, both at Staples Center, the Clippers played with playoff intensity against the team in played a tough 7-game series against last year in the Grizzlies and a Lakers team that is their main rival. They were bound to have a letdown against Golden State and Cleveland and they lost both of those games. Now they face the team that swept them in the second round of the playoffs last season. While we think revenge is a way overrated handicapping angle in the NBA. However, it does come into play in certain situations and we think this is one of them. The Clippers were embarrassed in that playoff series. They were real banged up after their physical series with Memphis and they faced a Spurs team that was on the top of its game, playing their best basketball of the season. Not to mention that this Spurs team is full of playoff vets and that the Clippers were entering their first foray into the playoffs with this roster. The Clippers got better in the offseason and now they have one of the deepest benches, if not THE deepest, in the NBA. While Blake Griffin is banged up the team is still healthier than they were in the playoffs last season when these teams met. Most of all the Clippers have shown this year that they can get up for big games. When there is ?playoff atmosphere? which the Clippers have dealt with twice already this season they have shown they can step up and play well. While we are not sure that this game can match the intensity of the Grizzlies and Lakers games, we think the Clippers will bring their A Game after two straight losses to inferior teams. We don't see this Clippers team having too many three-game losing streaks this season and we think they take care of business tonight at home.

Bowling Green +119 over OHIO
Another featured mid-week MAC game sees the 6-3 Bowling Green Falcons traveling to Ohio to play the 8-1 Bobcats. Ohio’s best win this season came in the season’s opening week when they went into State College and beat the Nittany Lions in one of the most anticipated and emotional games in college football history. Since then, the Bobcats have played a simple schedule against New Mexico St., Marshall, Norfolk St., UMass, Buffalo, Akron, Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan. Not one of those programs is above .500 with Eastern Michigan, Akron, UMass, and New Mexico being a combined 3-34. Norfolk State is an FCS team that is 3-7. There is a price to pay for playing one of the weakest schedules in that it does not prepare you well and it’s not like Ohio was blowing out these cupcakes. They beat Marshall by 3, UMass by 3, Buffalo by 7, Akron by 6 and lost to Miami (Ohio). This is the most overvalued 8-1 team in the country.

Bowling Green lost three of its first four games to then #23 Florida State, #25 Toledo and Virginia Tech. To give you an idea of how well regarded BGU was to oddsmakers, and rightfully so, they were just a 3½-point dog in Toledo. The Falcons rank 9th in the nation in points allowed. They have a strong leader in quarterback Matt Schilz and they have outstanding special teams. This is fourth-year Bowling Green boss Dave Clawson's best team yet and on the strength of a great effort by the best back seven in the MAC, the Falcons are not going to need the points here. BGU outright.

Our Pick Bowling Green +119 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.38)

Late Pick of the Day

Magic/T-WOLVES under 194 -107
The Magic have scored 102, 115 and 93 points respectively in their first three games and that has their offensive capabilities overvalued here. Orlando's first two games at home were against Phoenix and Denver, two clubs that play a turbo-paced style with little attention to defense. That changed last night when Orlando went on the road for the first time and lost 99-93 at Chicago in which the Bulls shot nearly 50% from the floor and went to the stripe another 24 times.

It’s early but Minnesota ranks 21st in points per game with 95. They have played two offensive minded teams also in Brooklyn and Sacramento and in its other game, they played a hot-shooting Raptors club. Both these teams are strong on the boards and T-Wolves coach Rick Adelman is a long-time proponent of playing defense first. Of the six combined games that these two have played, five came against offensive minded clubs. Expect the pace to slow way down tonight with a Magic team that may struggle with scoring for most of the season. The marketplace has missed the target here..

Our Pick Magic/T-WOLVES under 194 -107 (Risking 2.14 units - To Win: 2.00)
