Monday Night Football: Giants at Redskins

New York Giants at Washington Redskins (3, 51)

With a pair of victories over division rivals, the Washington Redskins kept alive their slim hopes for a trip to the playoffs. They try for a third straight win over an NFC East rival on Monday night when they host the division-leading New York Giants. Washington appeared to be far out of the playoff picture after a string of three straight losses that began with a 27-23 road setback against the Giants in Week 7. But after their bye week, the Redskins manhandled the Philadelphia Eagles and jumped out to a huge lead in Dallas on Thanksgiving before holding on for a 38-31 triumph over the Cowboys. With star rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III at the helm, Washington is just one game behind Seattle for the second wild card in the conference but also has Tampa Bay and Minnesota in its way.

New York avoided a major downward spiral last Sunday night, when it posted a convincing 38-10 home victory over the surging Green Bay Packers. Prior to the win, the Giants suffered losses at home to Pittsburgh and in Cincinnati. New York, which is two games ahead of both Washington and Dallas in the division, ranks fourth in the NFC but trails San Francisco by 1 1/2 games for second place and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Giants -3, O/U 51

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the high-50s with partly cloudy conditions. Winds will blow out of the SSE at 4 mph.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (7-4): Quarterback Eli Manning owns a 7-2 record in his last nine starts against Washington. In his only previous Monday night meeting with the Redskins on Dec. 21, 2009, Manning threw three touchdown passes without an interception. Not everything that came out of Sunday's win over the Packers was good as running back Andre Brown suffered a broken leg and is out for the remainder of the season. David Wilson could see more playing time in place of Brown, who is second in the NFC with eight rushing touchdowns.

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (5-6): Griffin performed well in his first career game against the Giants, completing 20 of 28 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns while running for 89 yards on nine carries. Griffin was even better in his next two divisional games as he threw four TD passes against both the Eagles and Cowboys, becoming the first rookie in league history to do have at least four scoring strikes in consecutive games. Running back Alfred Morris is second among rookies with 982 yards. Washington is allowing an average of 301.4 passing yards, the second-worst mark in the NFL.

TRENDS:

* Giants are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games on grass.
* Redskins are 5-1 ATS in their last six vs. NFC East foes.
* Under is 6-1 in Giants’ last seven road games.
* Under is 4-1 in Redskins’ last five games overall.
* Giants are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. The Giants have won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the teams but were swept in the season series in 2011.

2. Washington is second in the league with an average of 162.9 rushing yards.

3. With three TD passes against Green Bay, Manning became the first Giant with 200 career scoring tosses

THE GOLD SHEET

*WASHINGTON 29 - NY Giants 24—Rested Redskins ready for a little revenge after being shocked in the last two minutes Oct. 21 in New York, when Eli Manning connected with Victor Cruz for a salsa-generating, 77-yard TD reception just seconds after RG3 had given Washington a 23-20 lead. In his last two games (vs. Philly & Dallas), however, the Redskin QB sensation has been nearly perfect, completing 34 of 43, with 8 TDs and only 1 int., with NFC East GMs moaning about having to face the speedster with the “good gun” for the next decade. They better start moaning a little about rookie RB Alfred Morris (982 YR) too.

The Washington Redskins and their rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III are the hottest thing going in the NFL right now, but if they have any hope of making some more noise and crashing the NFC playoff party they will have to score a huge win this week when they host their NFC East rival New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Griffin has played lights out since the Redskins bye week, tossing four touchdown passes in back-to-back weeks in big wins over NFC East rivals Philly and Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, 38-31. If throwing bombs and carving up the Cowboys on Turkey Day wasn't enough, RG3 is also the Skins fastest and most dangerous runner, and the duel-threat rookie will certainly look to make another statement on the big stage that is Monday Night Football.

But the New York Giants are the defending Super Bowl champs for a reason, and they re-established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the NFC when they snapped a two-game losing streak with an impressive performance over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday Night, 38-10. The Giants defense found their missing pass rush and sacked Aaron Rodgers five times, and QB Eli Manning became the franchise's touchdown leader with three TD scores in the victory over the Packers.

The folks in Las Vegas that set the point spreads opened the big Monday Nighter with New York as slim 1-point favorites late on Sunday, but with memories of RG3's win over Dallas a distant memory and the G-men's win over Green Bay still pretty fresh, early money rained down on the Giants quickly causing the oddsmakers to adjust the line up to New York minus -2.5 on the road.

The over/under total opened at 51 and hasn't moved in either direction since its release.

The one advantage the Giants have on Monday, if you want to call it an advantage, is that this will be their second crack at the rookie QB. Back on October 21st (week 7) the Giants "limited" Griffin to just 258 yards passing and two touchdowns, and they also kept him in the pocket well (3 sacks) and limited the damage with his legs to 89 yards rushing. The big key was turnovers, as the Giants defense intercepted RG3 once and picked up three fumbles to slip away with the win when Manning hit Victor Cruz with the game-winning score on a 77-yard bomb in the final minute of play.

Don't expect the game plan to change much for the Giants, especially since the Redskins have one of the weakest secondaries in the game (301 ypg - 31st) and have only generated 20 sacks on the season so far (26th). The Giants will also be working rookie running back David Wilson into the mix this week following the season-ending injury to Andre Brown (broken fibula), so a heavy workload for Ahmad Bradshaw and Wilson against a stiff Redskins run defense (89 ypg - 3rd) just wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

Containing RG3 in the pocket is much easier said than done, and in the past few weeks when defenses have crept seven and eight men into the box to limit the Skins league-leading running game (164 ypg), it has resulted in bomb after bomb and lots of big plays in the passing game. If it isn't broken, why fix it? Expect the Giants defense to try and get pressure out of their base fronts, and make RG3 and running back Alfred Morris go east-west and sideline to sideline instead of rushing hard upfield and creating seams for the Skins to exploit.

Traditionally the Redskins have been a great wager when facing the Giants, going 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings and 6-1 ATS versus the NFC East in general. However, before RG3 the Redskins have struggled on Monday Night Football (1-4 ATS in L5), whereas the Giants and Manning seem to thrive on the big stage going 4-1 ATS in their last five appearances.

Normally when division rivals meet their familiarity with each other tends to make the under a solid bet, and the Giants-Redskins matchup is no different (under is 4-1 in L5 head-to-head), but when these two play in D.C. it actually the over that has gone 8-3 in the last 11 meetings played in the nation's capital. The over is also 4-1-1 in the Giants last six games on Monday Night.

Badger's Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Money has been pouring in on the Giants (65%) due to their apparent resurrection last week against the Packers, who aren't as good as many think. The Skins offense is rolling scoring over 30 points in each of their last two games. A star is being born in front of our eyes (RGIII). Expect a monster showing from the rook on MNF. I'm betting the Skins plus the points.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

Hottest ATS team

Oklahoma City Thunder – This week: 4-0 ATS, Season: 12-5-1

Oklahoma City has the third-best ATS record in the league and has covered in its last five games. The Thunder hit the road for a date with the Nets in Brooklyn on Tuesday before returning to Chesapeake Energy Arena for a five-game homestand.

Coldest ATS team

Orlando Magic – This week: 0-3 ATS, Season: 6-8-1

The Magic had a tough schedule this past week, blowing covers in three straight games to the Celtics, Spurs and Nets. To make matters worse, PG Jameer Nelson missed Friday’s loss because of an Achilles injury. The Magic have another tough week ahead of them with road dates in Golden State, Utah and Sacramento.

Hottest over bet

Houston Rockets – This week: 3-0 over, Season: 10-6 O/U

The Rockets’ offense has taken off in the last four games, averaging a whopping 117.5 points per game. James Harden and the frontcourt duo of Chandler Parson and Patrick Patterson are leading the charge, lifting Houston over the total in its last four contests. The Rockets have a tough schedule this week that includes dates with the Lakers, Spurs and Mavs.

Hottest under bet

Milwaukee Bucks – This week: 0-4 under, Season: 5-9-1 O/U

The Bucks have played under the total in five straight games. A major reason for Milwaukee’s recent dip below the total is a struggling offense that is averaging 89.8 points per game during that stretch - seven points lower than its season average. The Bucks hit the road for two games in New Orleans and San Antonio this week before hosting the Bobcats.

Scouting the schedule

-After a home date with the Magic on Sunday, the Lakers hit the road for seven of their next eight games. Los Angeles is just 1-4 ATS on the road this season.

-The Denver Nuggets are also about to the hit the road. After a home contest with the Raptors on Monday, the Nuggets hit the road for five straight games and six of their next seven. Denver is 8-4 O/U away from home this season.
