Game of the day: Celtics at Rockets

Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets (-2.5, 205.5)

The road has not been very kind to the Boston Celtics so far. A three-game trip starting at the Houston Rockets on Friday is going to make it tough to change their fortunes. The Celtics have won four straight at home after surviving the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday but have dropped four of their last five away from TD Garden. The Rockets have been much better at home and appear to be getting their defense under control.

Houston had surrendered an average of 113.6 points in its previous eight games before settling down in a 99-93 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. The Celtics will provide a stiffer offensive test, with point guard Rajon Rondo playing well and Paul Pierce coming off his highest scoring total of the season. It’s likely that both Rondo and Pierce and perhaps a few others will take turns guarding Houston leading scorer James Harden, who scored 31 points in his return to the lineup Wednesday after missing a game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSNNE (Boston), CSH (Houston)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (12-9, 8-11-2 ATS): Boston has been getting better on the defensive end the last two weeks, having held six straight opponents below 100 points before a 117-115 double overtime win over the Mavericks on Wednesday. The Celtics forced 28 turnovers in that game, including three in the final 1:07 of the second overtime. Boston’s improvement on the defensive end has given the offense a chance to gel. Pierce is leading the team in scoring at 19.9 points but had been held below 20 in five of the previous six before exploding for 34 against Dallas. The one consistent threat on offense has been Rondo, who has reached double figures in assists in all but one of his starts and has pulled down 10.3 rebounds in the last three contests.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (10-11, 9-11-1 ATS): Houston has had its own problems on defense and ranks last in the NBA in points allowed, surrendering an average of 104.8. The offense, which puts up 104.2, has been able to bail the team out at times but could not keep up during the recent losing streak. Wednesday was a switch in the other direction, as the Rockets held the Wizards to 39.3 percent shooting. Harden, who sat out Tuesday’s 134-126 overtime loss to San Antonio with a sprained ankle, returned to the lineup with 31 points in the win over Washington. Harden has pulled out of a lengthy shooting slump by connecting on 50 percent or better from the field in each of the last three games.

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Houston.
* Celtics are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Houston.
* Underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Road team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Rockets PG Jeremy Lin, who exploded for a season-high 38 points without Harden on Tuesday but was back down to 10 on 4-of-8 shooting Wednesday. Lin has been held to 10 points or less in four of the last five contests.

2. Pierce has averaged 21.6 points in 24 career games against Houston.

3. Boston had taken three straight in Houston before dropping its last trip, 93-77, on Mar. 18, 2011.

3 Unit Top play

Old Dominion/ Central Florida Over 132: UCF's games have averaged 131.5 ppg this year, but a closer look shows that it is really just one game that has brought that average down. That game was vs Savannah State and A look at the Tigers stats shows that their games have averaged just 109.4 ppg, so a low scoring game could be expected in that one. Now if we take out that game then their games have averaged 139.3 ppg. A big jump. Central Florida averages a solid 68.5 ppg on 50.7% shooting and they are 98th in the nation in points vs possession and will be facing an ODU defense that is 284th in the nation in defensive points per possession. Overall the ODU defense is 270 in points allowed (71.3 ppg) and 307th in defensive FG% (46.3%), plus 313th at defending the 3-ball (38.3%). I fully expect somewhere in the mid 70's from UCF. On offense ODU is not all that good (63.3 ppg), but they have averaged 65.6 ppg in their last 5 games, while The Knights have allowed 69.5 ppg in their last 4 games, so I would expect somewhere in the mid 60's from ODU. Neither team plays a slow down game and both offenses should be able to take care of some struggling defenses and put around 140 on the board in this one.

5 Unit Play. Take #819 Utah -1 ½ over Phoenix (9:05 p.m., Friday, December 14)
(Game of the Week)

Utah is coming off a big win at home against the San Antonio Spurs and as of right now the Jazz are playing some great team basketball. It's no secret that Utah is a much better team at home then on the road but tonight the Jazz are playing Phoenix and I believe the Jazz are the better team no matter where they play. Utah has won 4-STRAIGHT games and the Suns have dropped 8 out of their last 10 games. Granted the Suns are coming off a big home win against Memphis but it's rare to see the Suns win back-to-back games. Tonight Utah will take control of this game in the 2nd half and the Jazz win this game by double-digits. Phoenix is 3-10 ATS in their last 13 home games and the Jazz are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 meetings in Phoenix.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For College Basketball

We will likely have a bigger card on Saturday. I noted this earlier in the week but given the lack of value that presents itself during the weekdays, we will pass on those days and play to a bigger card of value on Saturday. Normally we have 7 plays (all for four and 1 of them for 5 units). We are going to reduce our regular plays to 3 units but play around 10 selections with one as a five. All selections will have to have a double-digit significant on my sheets and it will still be selective. I just dislike one selection having so much value on any given week for our full swings especially when I feel like we are leaving some winners on the table on Saturdays. Simply more value to be had on the weekends as compared to the weekdays but we end of valuing them the same with the way we are doing it now. I don't know if I will win or not, but I do like to keep you abreast on what I'm doing and thinking. Let's look forward to having a solid weekend as usual as we went 2-1 last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

3-Unit Play. #825. Take Charlotte +8 over Miami (Friday @ 7pm est).

I have Charlotte losing this game by three points today. I also have a lean on Central Florida to do well but the line drop in that game made me lay off. Plus, I've always believed Friday Night College Basketball plays to the favor of the Underdog - even when they were doing Ivy League Basketball which I miss on Friday evenings because they were spectacular for an underdog cover to a tune of 30-10 if you take the +5 to +7 underdogs back when Ivy League basketball were mainly featured on Friday nights. Charlotte lost to this team by 15 points last year and this is a revenge game for them. Note that the line is moving in favor of Charlotte despite the public being on Miami. Charlotte has beat several quality teams this year that has led to their undefeated season so far including beating Davidson on the road by four points which is a very tough place to play. And, if they can lose to this team by 15 last year with the team that they had, they likely will play much closer with a better team they have this year. Miami is a senior laden team that sports a big win against Michigan State by 8 points. But, believe it or not, I have both Charlotte and Michigan State as top 40 caliber teams. The key in this game is rebounding. Charlotte has one of the best rebounding teams in the country and they are top 55 in the league in offensive rebounding. This is why they beat Davidson by out rebounding them by double-digits. Miami of Florida for as talented as they are offensively (top 30), they are outside the top 200 in offensive rebounding. Look for the size of Charlotte to be a positive for them this evening. The Niners of Charlotte are 4-0 this year when facing teams with a winning percentage of 60% or more and the Hurricanes of Miami are 2-6 ATS when facing teams with a road winning percentage of greater than 60%.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball

4-Unit Play. #806. Take Indiana Pacers -5.5 over Philadelphia 76ers (Friday @ 7:05pm est).

4-Unit Play. #818. Take Under 194.5 Golden State vs. Orlando (Friday @ 7:05pm est).

The Sixers have the Lakers at home on the horizon in their next game at home. They face the Pacers here and then return home to take on the Lakers. The Sixers come off a tough loss to the Bulls and they will find it difficult to likely do well today as well as they will likely be without the services of Jrue Holiday who had 26 points in a loss to the Bulls at home. Without Holiday, the Sixers will lose their main point of attack and they face a Pacer team that remembers a loss last year to the Sixers in overtime on their home floor. With that revenge in mind and having a poor first half against Cleveland last game, I look for the Pacers to start this game off on the right foot. I have the Pacers winning by about 6 to 10 points on both of my data runs. The Sixers are 6-13 ATS when facing a team with a home winning percentage of greater than 60%. As per the Golden State game, the Warriors have revenge against the Magic from yielding 102 points to them at home in a game the Magic frankly stunned this time. The Warriors have revenge coming in and I suspect they will not overlook them in this contest. Look for the Warriors to be much more focused on the defensive end in this game and look to get revenge against the Magic. The Magic struggle against defensive minded teams such as their 80-86 loss to Atlanta and look for this game to be relatively low scoring here as the Warriors have a strong defensive presence and although not as much as Atlanta, they definitely do have a defensive presence such as holding Miami to 95 points. I have this game around the mid to high 180's.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Denver Nuggets

The Memphis Grizzlies (14-5, 12-6-1 ATS) are coming off their first two-game losing steak of the year while the Denver Nuggets (11-12. 13-10) are just happy to be home at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO when the teams meet Friday night at 10:30 ET on ESPN. The Nuggets are 5-1 at home this season but they are returning home from a five-game road trip and have played eight of their last nine games on the road, where they are just 6-11. Thus, Denver is one game under .500 overall Still, is just being home enough to knock off one of the better teams in the league in a revenge spot?

The Grizzlies had the best record in the NBA at 14-3 before losing their last two games vs. the hot Atlanta Haws at home and to the Phoenix Suns on the road, and one of those first three losses came back home in Memphis to these Nuggets 97-92 on November 19th. The Grizz would now like nothing better than to repay that favor on the Nuggets' own home floor in the altitude. And they are certainly capable of doing it too as the Memphis defense is allowing the fewest points in the NBA at just 90.7 per game while ranking fourth in field goal percentage against and eighth in three-point defense. Even during the two-game losing streak, the defense has continued to be great as the Grizzlies have lost by scores of 93-83 and 82-80 respectively. It is the Memphis offense that has hit a bit of a lull, but the team is still averaging a commendable 97.2 points overall led by Rudy Gay and his 19.1 points per game, and the Grizzlies have a chance to bounce back here vs. a Denver defense that is allowing a generous 101.0 points per contest to rank 25th in the league in that department.

Although the Nuggets play so much better at home, teams returning home from long road trips vs. mostly the opposite conference are often a bit lethargic in their first game back home, making this a rather tricky spot for Denver especially having only one day off since ending its trip with a back-to-back at Detroit and Minnesota on Tuesday and Wednesday. Granted Minnesota was a conference game but the trip began in Atlanta and the first four games of the trip were all vs. Eastern Conference opponents. All that recent travel may negate the edge that the altitude usually gives the Nuggets in this building. Besides, the Grizzlies are 5-3 on the road and they did win on their last trip to Denver last season.

While the Nuggets have been good a home generally, they have been far from automatic vs. the better teams in the league going a disappointing 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 home games vs. teams with winning road records. Denver ended its trip with a 108-105 loss in Minnesota, and the Grizzlies are 15-7 ATS in their last 22 games when their opponent had scored at least 100 points in its previous game.

Memphis at Denver (Fri): Both teams are considered contenders in the West with Memphis off to a much better start, winning 14 of its first 18 games. Denver has plodded its way to a 10-11 start, largely due to a schedule that has seen the Nuggets play 15 (5-10) of its first 21 games on the road.

Denver is 5-1 at home, highlighted by a win over defending champion Miami. Denver returns home following a 3 game road trip and both teams play on the road on Saturday. Denver is likely to be favored by a couple of baskets and should take advantage of being at home before heading out on yet another 5 game road trip. The Nuggets already lost at Memphis by 5 points in mid November. DENVER.

Game: Sacramento at Oklahoma City (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Sacramento +13 (-110)

There is nothing about the 7-14 Sacramento Kings, who are also 1-8 on the road, that is going to get the blood thumping for the Thunder in this one. The betting public sees otherwise with nearly 70% in the Oklahoma City camp. While the Kings have posted just seven in the win column, three of those have come in the last five games. Oklahoma City should be on cruise control tonight as they are on a nine game winning streak, and will be eyeing their next contest vs. the Spurs who they consider their biggest threat in the West. The Thunder are just 3-7 ATS vs. losing teams in their last 10, and an even worse 2-6 ATS vs. a team under .400 in their last eight. Sacramento will stick around here against a big number. Back Sacramento in this game.

Golden State Warriors vs. Orlando Magic (NBA) - 7:00 PM EST
Premium Pick: Total: 194.0/-103 Over
*3 Star NBA Total Domination* The Golden State Warriors are coming off a big win over the Miami Heat in their last game. Golden State may be a little more sloppy in this one, and if they are I think that will show up on the defensive end. Both of these teams are in the top ten in the NBA in pace, so there should be plenty of shot opportunities for both teams in this one. These teams reached 196 in their game a couple weeks ago despite neither team shooting it particularly great or getting to the line very much. The over is 10-3-1 in Golden State's last 14 against the East. Take the over.

Sacramento Kings vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA) - 8:00 PM EST
Premium Pick: Point Spread: -13.0/-102 Oklahoma City Thunder
*3 Star NBA ATS Blowout* The Oklahoma City Thunder aren't strangers to blowout wins at home. Last game they appeared to take a game off and it almost cost them at home against the lowly Hornets. Sacramento comes to town playing some bad basketball, and the Thunder match up very well against the Kings. Look for Oklahoma City to jump on them early and coast to a big win here. The Thunder have won by more than 20 points at home twice in the past two weeks. OKC is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 on a single day of rest. The Kings are 7-18-1 ATS following a day of rest. Take the Thunder.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Toronto Raptors (NBA) - 7:00 PM EST
Premium Pick: Point Spread: -5.5/-105 Dallas Mavericks
*3 Star TGIF NBA Bookie SMASHER* The Dallas Mavericks have quietly been covering the number very consistently of late. The Mavericks are getting a great start to the season out of O.J. Mayo. Mayo is absolutely lighting it up so far this year. He is averaging 20.9 points per game, and he is shooting better than 50% from three-point range. Toronto will be without Bargnani and Lowry in this one. The Raptors weren't good to start with, and losing their two best play makers will hurt them a lot. The Mavericks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 overall. They are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 on a day of rest. The Raptors are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 against the Western Conference. Take Dallas.

Memphis -104 over DENVER
The Nuggets return home from a tough five-game trip to play perhaps the most physically punishing team in the NBA. The Nuggets have also been very inconsistent this season with and 11-12 record and not winning two games in a row since Nov 23-25.
The Grizzlies have lost two straight, suggesting all focus will be on this one. They’re first in the NBA in points allowed and rank high in every other key category as well. In a favorable spot, look for the Grizz to get back to their winning ways against a tired host.
Our Pick Memphis -104 (Risking 2.08 units - To Win: 2.00)

804 TOR 5.5(-110) bodog vs 803 DAL double-dime bet

Analysis: PLAY: TORONTO
RATING: DOUBLE DIME PLAY ’

This is a spot I love in the NBA as the public will want to jump on Dallas as they will expect them to bounce back following their 117-115 loss in Boston in Double OT on Wednesday. In fact in their last 3 games Dallas has scored 116,119 and 115. They are facing a Toronto team with just 4 wins on the season and losers of 6 in a row. They just finished a 5 game road trip on the West Coast and returned home on Wednesday and lost to Brooklyn. This is the second game back at home and as we have done so many times I fade the team returning home in their first game then back them in the second game at home which is tonight. Dallas is laying too many points as a road favorite as it's true they score but they also give up a ton of points as they have given up 100 or more in 8 of the last 11 games. It must also be noted that Dallas has to play again tomorrow night in Minnesota which will be their 6th road game in 7 games and they will be playing their 3rd game in 4 days and played a double OT game in their last game. This will be their 6th different city in 10 days. Toronto takes this to the limit and don't be surprised if they pull off the Upset. I have Toronto winning by 1-3 points so grab the points.

TAKE TORONTO as MARCO'S NBA GAME OF THE WEEK
