North Carolina at Texas: What bettors need to know

North Carolina Tar Heels at Texas Longhorns (+4.5, 140)

Texas has already played in the Maui Invitational and lost to Georgetown and UCLA, and the schedule gets tougher this week with games against North Carolina and Michigan State.

The week begins with a visit from the 19th-ranked Tar Heels, who have won three straight since losing to Indiana by 24 on Nov. 27. North Carolina survived a scare against East Carolina on Saturday before winning 93-87, while Texas is coming off a 12-point win over Texas State. The Longhorns have struggled while waiting for sophomore point guard Myck Kabongo to be cleared by the NCAA, which is investigating his relationship with a professional agent. Texas has won four of the last five contests against the Tar Heels and holds a 4-3 series lead in the series.

TV: 9 p.m., ET, ESPN2

ABOUT NO. 19 NORTH CAROLINA (8-2, 5-3 ATS): Coach Roy Williams was not pleased after the Tar Heels allowed East Carolina to score 61 second-half points on Saturday. Look for the Tar Heels to be a little more aggressive in the paint after they grabbed just 10 offensive rebounds – and none by a post player – against the Pirates. Senior guard Dexter Strickland, who has 26 assists in his last three games, recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 assists against East Carolina. Sophomore forward James Michael McAdoo leads the Tar Heels in points (15.4) and rebounds (8.3), while Desmond Hubert, Brice Johnson and Joel James continue to share time at center.

ABOUT TEXAS (6-4, 3-5 ATS): The Longhorns are hoping Kabongo’s eventual return will jump-start their offense, which ranks 267th in the country while averaging 63.3 points. While the offense sputters, the defense has kept the Longhorns competitive. They lead the Big 12 in field goal percentage defense (33.2) while allowing 58.2 points per game. Offensively, guard Sheldon McClellan averages a team-high 15.3 points, and forward Jonathan Holmes leads the team with eight rebounds per game. Freshman guard Javan Felix has bounced back from a shaky start to average 16.5 points in his last two games. Felix ranks second in the Big 12 in assists (5.8).

TRENDS:

* Tar Heels are 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.
* Longhorns are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 non-conference games.
* Over is 4-1 in Tar Heels' last five overall.
* Over is 9-3 in Longhorns last 12 vs. Atlantic Coast.

TIP-INS:

1. The Longhorns have won 14 straight non-conference home games and are 86-3 in nonconference home games since the start of the 2002-03 season.

2. North Carolina has attempted 20 or more three-point field goals in six of its first 10 games.

3. Texas is 212-22 under coach Rick Barnes when holding opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

This play is more about going against the Huskies, as they are 0-5 on the road this season. Northern Illinois is scoring only 58 points per game and hitting on just 39.0 percent of its field goal attempts and that will not win many games. The Redhawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss in their previous game.

4 Unit Play. #779 Take Murray State -1 over Arkansas State (8:30 pm ESPN 3) An exciting mid-major game takes place tonight at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro, AR. Murray State holds a 20-10 edge in the all-time series after its 66-53 triumph a season ago. The Racers also have the best player on the floor in Isaiah Cannon, as he is averaging over 21 points per game. Murray State is 9-4 ATS (1 push) in their last 14 non-conference games. The Red Wolves are 1-5 ATS (1 push) in their last 7 non-conference games. Both trends hold true tonight, as the visitor gets it done in Arkansas.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For College Basketball

We are 19-12 (62%) since moving to a higher volume but lower unit value selections in the NBA. We basically used the spreadsheet models along with motivation of teams factored in and it has panned out. We are on a down rut right now in college ball. It needs to change. I believe using the same models for the NBA with games that show us significance, plus, having contests with motivation might be the way to go. If we have success doing this, because it takes me a great deal of time to go through every game, I likely will not be doing write-ups in college ball on days with large cards. I will of course continue do write-ups for the other sports as normal as I enjoy writing explanations for selections.

6-Unit Play. #730. Take Cincinnati -8 over Xavier (Wednesday @ 7pm est).

3-Unit Play. #754. Take St. Mary's -12.5 over Pacific (Wednesday @ 10pm est).

2-Unit Play. #733. Take Ohio -1 over UMass (Wednesday @ 7:30pm est).

2-Unit Play. #743. Take Texas Arlington +14.5 over Oklahoma State (Wednesday @ 8pm est).

2-Unit Play. #748. Take New Mexico State +4.5 over New Mexico (Wednesday @ 9pm est).

2-Unit Play. #751. Take Northern Illinois +4 over Seattle (Wednesday @ 10pm est).

2-Unit Play. #761. Take Canisius +10.5 over Temple (Wednesday @ 7pm est).

2-Unit Play. #764. Take St. Bonaventure -20.5 over The Citadel (Wednesday @ 7pm est).

2-Unit Play. #771. Take Morehead State -4 over South Dakota (Wednesday @ 8pm est).

2-Unit Play. #780. Take Arkansas State +1 over Murray State (Wednesday @ 8:30pm est).

I usually enjoy writing a lot. But, there are a lot of games here. I'll try to get to the point. Cincinnati has been great this year. They have beaten top 50 and top 40 schools such as Iowa State and Oregon by margins of 11 and 8 and those were on neutral footing. They face a Xavier team who they lost to last year and revenge is a big factor here especially in a rivalry such as this. Plus, although Xavier did win on the road against Purdue who is a top 75 team, they are led by a freshman and sophomore who will find it difficult against a senior laden Cincinnati team who are led by at least 6 individuals who who are either significant or important contributors. Given the depth of Cincinnati and the fact they are rated 6th in the nation in defense whereas Xavier relies heavily on their 3 point field goals, I like Cincinnati to do well here. Their undefeated season does not mean much if they do not beat Xavier here and I think they get up for this game in a big way. If you take a close look at St. Mary's schedule, you'll notice they played against Pacific earlier this year on the road and lost by 10 points. This is a big revenge game for them and given that they are the top effective field goal percentage in the nation as well as 2nd in 3 point shooting facing a top 300 defense, I like St. Mary's to do well here with revenge. Here is a quick analysis of the rest of the plays. I have Texas Arlington as a top 130 team and they lost to Oklahoma by just 4 points and Texas by 16. I believe it will be tough for Oklahoma State to get up for this game and their average margin of victory against top 130 teams is around 9-10 points and I like Texas Arlington with the experience of having played against difficult foes already. New Mexico State and New Mexico just hooked up recently and New Mexico got the better of this team at home. Now that the jitters are gone, I like the decent public fade here with New Mexico State catching the points in what they hope to deliver to New Mexico their first loss of the year. Northern Illinois is 40 spots better in the power rankings in my book having played tough competition and they are grabbing points here. Plus, solid public fade. St. Bonaventure loves to rout teams ranked around the top 300 at home by margins of 30+ and as they face the Citadel who is nearly dead last in most statistical categories, don't be surprised if this gets ugly quickly. This team just beat Cleveland State who is a top 200 team by 34 and now they face a team outside the top 300. Canisius is a team that has two big road wins against Fairfield and Marist already this year and beat a top 100 St. Bonaventure team. This is a solid team grabbing double-digits against a Temple team that beat a similar Wagner and Delaware team by 5 and 8 points. I have this at 7 points so are rolling with this selection here. Morehead State has played the likes of Kentucky, North Dakota State, Wright State and Murray State and has not been phased. As they face a South Dakota team who they lost to by 1 point last year, this is a great deal of revenge for this team. This team just beat a top 130 Indiana State team at home by 8 and now they go on the road to face a top 300 team. I like the edge here. Finally, Murray State is the 70% road public favorite here and the line is rock solid at +1. The key here is revenge but this game reminds me a lot of the Illinois-Chicago game yesterday in which Illinois-Chicago was the team that was 50 spots better but on the road things are different. As Murray State comes off a big win against Western Kentucky and Arkansas State having shown they can beat a top 80 team at home once already, I like the home dog here to make the upset.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball

We are 19-12 (62%) in December. Its been a positive stretch. We've done it with less unit values and more volume. Looking forward to continue it.

3-Unit Play. #711. Take Oklahoma City -6 over Atlanta Hawks (Wednesday @ 7:30pm est).

3-Unit Play. #716. Take Phoenix -9 over Charlotte (Wednesday @ 9pm est).

3-Unit Play. #718. Take Memphis -9 over Milwaukee (Wednesday @ 9:30pm est).

3-Unit Play. #722. Take LA Clippers -13.5 over New Orleans Hornets (Wednesday @ 10:35pm est).

The Thunder have revenge from an earlier season loss to the Hawks at home. They were probably overlooking the Hawks a bit at that time and frankly, they were not playing well at that time as that was still part of the transition with Kevin Martin. But, 20-4 and look to avenge the 9 point loss at home to Atlanta. The Hawks come off an overtime win against Washington yesterday and I'm not sure how energetic they will be to face a Oklahoma City team that will be ready to go for this contest. OKC just played the Spurs with revenge at home and that was a success winning by 14 and they look to do it again here. Charlotte had a great effort against the Lakers as it is always exciting to get up for one of the most storied franchises in sports history. Plus, you face Kobe. But after losing that game by a point, this team will likely find it difficult to get up for the Suns. The Suns are playing good basketball right now beating the Grizzlies at home, Utah and Sacramento. There is a reason why I believe this line is so high and that is in part due to the Vegas expecting the Bobcats to have a bit of a let down. Even though the Bobcats have revenge, I like Phoenix here. Memphis likes to play and cover against Eastern Conference foes. Milwaukee comes off game where they honestly should not have beaten Indiana as they ended up winning late and Memphis has covered against this team twice. Milwaukee is the same team that lost to the Spurs by 11 on the road and New Orleans by 21 on the road. I like Memphis to possibly win this game by about 15 or so this evening. Finally, the Clippers lost to New Orleans last year and the bad blood between these two teams exist. With New Orleans covering last night against Golden State (a game we were on), I like the Clippers who are rested and waiting for this game to get some revenge from that contest as they are not overlooking this game. I think the Clippers could win this contest by a wide margin this evening.

NBA BASKETBALL PLAY

4 Unit Play. Take #721 Over 189 ½ New Orleans at LA Clippers (10:35 p.m., Wednesday, December 19)

Totally shocked to see this total drop 2-points as I thought this total will rise 2-points! The Clippers are shooting for the 11th straight win and when you win that means your offense is usually scoring at will. The Clippers are averaging 104.6ppg in this 10-game winning streak and tonight the Clippers get this game at home were they are also averaging 104.6ppg. Look for the Clippers to make this game a high pace game and if you are the Hornets you better have your 'A' game tonight because this game could be a blowout and usually blowouts have big scoring. New Orleans are 8-2 O/U in their last 10 road games and the Clippers are 5-1 O/u in their last 6 home games. The last 7 meetings in LA between these 2-teams 6 of them have gone over the total. Tonight all of these trends continue and we continue to cash NBA tickets.

726 Duquesne -4.0(-110) Justbet vs 725 Western Mich. double-dime bet

Analysis:
PLAY: DUQUESNE
RATING: DOUBLE DIME PLAY

I feel we are getting a great number on this game tonight as Vegas has over compensated for Duquesne's last game a loss to Robert Morris. Fact is that Duquesne was in a bad spot as 3 games back they played Big Brother Pitt who rolled them 66-45. Duquesne for those of you that don't know is a small school in Pittsburgh. After they played Pitt Duquesne beat New Orleans 88-70. Following that game they had West Virginia come to Pittsburgh to play at the new Consol Energy Arena where the Penguins play and they beat West Virginia 60-56 as a 7 point dog. Next to Pitt, West Virginia is the biggest rival for Duquesne because West Virginia is just a little over a hour away. After that huge upset they played Robert Morris which is an even smaller school in Pittsburgh. They got trashed as they were still celebrating the WVU win. Robert Morris views Duquesne as Duquesne would view Pitt. So Robert Morris had Duquesne in their building and put it to Duquesne as they caught them flat as a pancake. Off of that loss expect a huge effort tonight from Duquesne who will be all business and roll a W. Michigan team playing their 4th straight road game. I have Duquesne winning by 7-9 points.

TAKE DUQUESNE as MARCO'S MISMATCH GAME OF THE WEEK
