Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 6-12.

Hottest ATS team

New Orleans Hornets (3-0, SU, 3-0 ATS)

Despite their horrible SU record (11-25), the Hornets have been a decent bet this season (19-17 ATS). New Orleans has covered in four straight contests, including all three this past week against San Antonio, Houston and Minnesota. The Hornets hit the road for three games this week with stops in New York, Philadelphia and Boston, but that doesn’t mean bettors should fade them. New Orleans boasts an impressive 11-6 ATS mark away from home this season.

Coldest ATS team

Sacramento Kings (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton returned from injuries this past week, but it hasn’t been enough to change Sacramento’s fortunes. The Kings are dealing with all kinds of off-court distractions like the potential sale and relocation of the team and that has translated into a string of poor performances on the court. Sacramento will have a chance to rebound against lowly Cleveland and Washington early this week.

Best over team

Orlando Magic (1-2 SU, 3-0 over/under)

The Magic have been the hottest over bet in the Association for the past three weeks. Orlando is riding a 10-game over streak into Monday’s contest in Washington. The Magic then enjoy a three-game homestand where they’ll welcome Indiana, Charlotte and Dallas. Orlando is 11-6-2 O/U at home.

Best under team

Indiana Pacers (3-0 SU, 0-3 over/under)

Indiana has been a fixture on Bank Shots week in and week out in this category for a reason. The Pacers lead the league in points allowed per game (89.1), opponent field goal percentage (41.3%) and opponent 3-point percentage (31.3%). Indiana is riding a seven-game under streak into Sunday’s tilt with Brooklyn and boasts the best under mark in the league at 13-23-1 O/U.

Scouting the schedule

- The Philadelphia 76ers enjoy 11 of their next 12 games at the friendly confines of the Wells ***** Center. Bettors note: The Sixers boast an impressive 14-4 over/under mark at home this season.

- The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of a five-game west coast road swing. The Cavs are surprisingly 13-9 ATS on the road, compared to a 4-12 mark at home.

- The Utah Jazz wrapped up a three-game road trip with a win and cover at Detroit Saturday and now enter a stretch where they’ll play seven of their next eight at home. The Jazz are 10-5 ATS at EnergySolutions Arena.

NCAAB game of the day: Louisville at UConn

Louisville at Connecticut (+6)

No. 4 Louisville is on an impressive run and seeks its 11th consecutive victory when it visits Connecticut in Hartford on Monday. The Cardinals are one of three unbeaten teams in Big East play and are off to the program’s best start since opening 16-1 during the 2003-04 campaign. Louisville coach Rick Pitino is expecting a fierce battle with the Huskies, who notched an impressive road victory at Notre Dame on Saturday under first-year coach Kevin Ollie. “They are a terrific team,” Pitino said. “I’m really happy for them because I love their coach. He is a class young man and I knew he would do a great job.” UConn has won two consecutive games and is 8-0 on its home courts.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (15-1, 3-0 Big East): Sophomore forward Chane Behanan was a surprise participant in the victory over South Florida and grabbed 12 rebounds while scoring seven points. It was feared Behanan would miss three or four games after he sprained his left ankle on Jan. 7 but he missed just one outing. “My whole foot was swollen for three days and there’s still pain,” Behanan said. “But it’s something I could tolerate and won’t let dictate us getting out of the Top 5 in the country. I can handle the pain.” Behanan is third on the Cardinals in scoring (11.1) and second in rebounding (7.4). Junior guard Russ Smith averages a team-best 18.7 points, senior point guard Peyton Siva contributes 11.9 points and a team-best 5.8 assists and junior center Gorgui Dieng checks in at 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per outing.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (12-3, 2-1 Big East): Junior forward Tyler Olander delivered a stunning performance with a career-high 16 points in the win over Notre Dame. Olander entered the contest with a 4.6 scoring average and hit 8-of-9 shots in the best effort of his career. “It’s definitely very rewarding,” said Olander, now averaging 5.3 points. “Things weren’t really working out for me at the beginning of the season. I stuck with it and kept working hard and got into the gym. It feels good to finally have hard work paying off.” Junior guard Shabazz Napier leads the Huskies with a 17.5 scoring average. Sophomore guard Ryan Boatright (16.1), sophomore forward DeAndre Daniels (11 points) and freshman guard Omar Calhoun (10.1) also average in double digits.

TRENDS:

* Cardinals are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
* Huskies are 6-1 ATS in their last seven vs. Big East foes.
* Cardinals are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Monday games.
* Cardinals are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

TIP-INS:

1. Louisville leads the series 7-6 and routed UConn 80-59 in last season’s lone meeting.

2. Siva had 17 points in Saturday’s win over South Florida to become the 64th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. He has 1,004.

3. UConn is shooting just 32.5 percent from 3-point range with Napier (40.3) the only player shooting better than 40 percent.

NBA's fastest and slowest offensive teams

Handicapping NBA totals without using offensive pace is like trying to build a shed with just a glue gun – you’re missing a few important tools there bub.

Offensive pace, a stat made famous by former ESPN NBA analyst and current Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Memphis Grizzlies John Hollinger, is the average number of possessions a team has per game.

For NBA total bettors, possessions mean points and points are the name of the game capping the over/under. Here’s a look at the three teams with the highest offensive pace and the three with the lowest, and how books are dealing with those teams’ totals.

Stats prior to action on Sunday, Jan. 12

Fastest offensive pace

Houston Rockets - 99.3 (22-16 over/under)

Houston has rocket fuel in their Nike’s with James Harden and Jeremy Lin headline a high-octane backcourt. The Rockets are second in the league in scoring (105.4) but have also given up a ton of points, allowing 103.3 ppg – 28th in the league. That’s an old fashion recipe for overs.

Los Angeles Lakers – 97.5 (19-16-1 over/under)

The Lakers pace is averaging 103.1 points, with a push from offensively-minded head coach Mike D’Antoni. With Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard on the shelf, L.A.’s has gone to a smaller, quicker lineup which could see its possession go up even further.

San Antonio Spurs/Denver Nuggets – 96.8 (19-20-0 over/under / 19-19-0 over/under)

The Spurs inclusion to this list may be a surprise to some, what with their aging core of superstars. San Antonio is making the most of all those possessions, averaging 104.8 points on 48.3 percent shooting a night – fourth best in the NBA. Denver is cut from a similar cloth, scoring 102 points on 46.4 percent shooting – fifth in the league.

Slowest offensive pace

New Orleans Hornets – 90.2 (18-18-0 over/under)

The Hornets only average 92 points a night but have seen a slight boost in scoring since the return of guard Eric Gordon. However, books may have adjusted a little too much for Gordon’s return. New Orleans slow-motion pace has gone 3-4 over/under in those games.

Brooklyn Nets – 90.4 (15-20-1 over/under)

The offensive pace has picked up since the Nets canned Avery Jones and handed the keys to P.J. Carlesimo. In the eight games since the coaching change, Brooklyn is averaging more than 102 points per game, posting a 5-3 over/under count. On the year, the Nets average just 96.2 points.

Indiana Pacers – 92.4 (13-23-1 over/under)

No team has a more misleading nickname than the Pacers. Indiana’s pace isn’t anywhere near Indy 500 speeds, making it one of the best under plays in the NBA. The Pacers are among the bottom dwellers in scoring (91.1) and haven’t been able to make up for the loss of Danny Granger, who won’t be back until February – maybe.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

**PREFERRED
Louisville over Connecticut* by 17
If UConn wins and/or covers its two games Saturday and here, we’ll be 0-2 in those
games. But we wanted to be anti-UConn from the git-go in Big East season when they
were playing anyone decent, so here we are.
LOUISVILLE, 71-54.

Kansas* over Baylor by 15

NBA

*Washington over Orlando by 3
Washington is playing for only the third time in eight days. The Wizards defeated the
Magic at home, 105-97, on Dec. 28 breaking Orlando’s 12-game streak of keeping
opponents under triple digits. There’s a chance the Wizards could have John Wall back
by this time.
WASHINGTON 101-98.

**PREFERRED
*Boston over Charlotte by 18
The Celtics can’t afford not to be focused given their recent troubles. Boston has struggled in the open court against athletic opponents. That won’t be the case here. The return of Avery Bradley provides Boston with one of its best defenders. Despite getting generous odds, the Bobcats still were only 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games
through Jan. 5.
BOSTON 110-92.

Atlanta over *Chicago by 3
Carlos Booze and Joakim Noah are nice players, but they are trumped by Al Horford
and multi-facet Josh Smith. The Hawks were 15-8 ATS in their last 23 road contests
through the first week of January.
ATLANTA 97-94.

*Memphis over Los Angeles Clippers by 4
The Grizzlies are playing for the third time in four nights, but were 11-4 ATS versus
opponents with a winning record and have revenge for losing to the Clippers in seven
games during the playoffs last season.
MEMPHIS 102-98.

*Dallas over Minnesota by 5
The Mavericks have a double revenge motive after losing by eight at home to
Minnesota and in overtime on the road.
DALLAS 103-98.

Miami over *Utah by 5
The Jazz are not to be trifled with in Salt Lake City where they had covered nine of
their first 14 this season. However, they are playing the defending champions and this
is their first game back from a three-game trip. The Heat rolled past the Jazz in Miami,
105-89, on Dec. 22 despite not having Chris Bosh.
MIAMI 106-101.

**PREFERRED
Oklahoma City over *Phoenix by 16
The Suns were on pace to have the third-worst record in franchise history ranking near
the bottom in the major defensive categories, but without the offense to make up for
it. This also is Phoenix’s fifth game in seven days and first following a four-game road
trip that ended Saturday night. The Thunder beat the Suns for the seventh time in a
row, burying them, 114-96, on Dec. 31 in Oklahoma City. The Suns have no answer
for Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
OKLAHOMA CITY 114-98.

*Sacramento over Cleveland by 5
The Kings have been missing Tyreke Evans (check status) and DeMarcus Cousins
remains a talented head case. Cleveland, though, is no bargain playing its second road
game in 48 hours and going 3-7 ATS when meeting a foe with a losing mark.
SACRAMENTO 101-96.

NBA Game of The Day: Clippers at Grizzlies

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-2.5, 184)

The Memphis Grizzlies did the unthinkable on Saturday - they allowed another team to score at least 100 points. Looking tired on the second night of a back-to-back, the Grizzlies got blown out at Dallas and will be looking to bounce back when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The Clippers are coming off an ugly loss of their own and have struggled a bit on the road, dropping their last two.

Memphis had allowed an opponent to reach 100 points only twice previously, including the opening game of the season when Los Angeles got 29 points from Jamal Crawford in a 101-92 victory at Staples Center. But after squeezing out an overtime victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, the Grizzlies had little left the next night and had to endure a 104-83 loss to the Mavericks. The Clippers had their 13-game home winning streak end when they were outscored 29-18 in the fourth quarter of a 104-101 loss to lowly Orlando on Saturday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), SportSouth (Memphis)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (28-9): Los Angeles is not far behind the Grizzlies in terms of its team defense but could not get the stops it needed late in Saturday’s contest. That snapped a three-game overall winning streak for the Clippers, who are opening up a three-game road trip at Memphis and will play 14 of their next 17 away from Staples Center. Chris Paul was dominant in the losing effort again on Saturday with 16 assists and only two turnovers. The MVP candidate is averaging 13.5 assists over the past four contests. Paul collected 12 points and 12 assists in the Oct. 31 meeting with Memphis as the Clippers put six players in double figures and shot 51.4 percent from the floor.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (24-11): Memphis had a four-game winning streak snapped in the loss to the Mavericks and is still one of only two teams in the NBA holding opponents to a average of less than 90 points (89.7). The Grizzlies could have attempted to keep it closer against Dallas but elected to sit all five starters for the entire fourth quarter to rest up for Monday. Rudy Gay was the only starter to reach double figures with 12 points. Gay went for 24 points in the opener against the Clippers and Zach Randolph pulled down 16 rebounds but Memphis could not get the job done defensively and went 2-for-14 from 3-point range.

TRENDS:

* Clippers are 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a loss.
* Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Clippers’ last five overall.
* Under is 6-1 in Grizzlies’ last seven games following a loss.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Clippers beat the Grizzlies in a seven-game playoff series last spring, taking the clinching game in Memphis 82-72.

2. Los Angeles F Grant Hill (knee) made his season debut on Saturday and played six minutes.

3. Memphis G Mike Conley is shooting 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range in the last six games.

3-Unit Play. Take #701 Over 192 Orlando at Washington (7:05p.m., Monday January 14)

So the Wizards have won 2-straight games and with John Wall back in the Wizards lineup their offense looks to be a lot better. Tonight I'm hoping the Wizards offense plays like they did against the Thunder on January 7 as the Wizards scored 101 points. The Orlando Magic on the other hand has been an 'Over' machine as their last 10 games have all gone over the total. Glen Davis is questionable tonight but if doesn't play it still doesn't hurt hte Magic offense because they still share the ball well and his absence hasn't hurt their offense. The Magic last 3 road games their offense has been clicking but their defense has been horrible giving up an average of 111.3ppg and tonight I see both the Magic offense scoring and their defense giving the Wizards some easy fast break points.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Chicago Bulls

Do not look for many fireworks on NBA TV on Monday night when the Chicago Bulls (20-15, 13-22 ATS), who have oddly struggled at home this year, host the slumping Atlanta Hawks (21-15, 14-21-1 ATS) at the United Center in Chicago, IL at 8:05 ET. The Bulls have one of the best road records in the NBA at 10-5, but they are inexplicably 10-10 at the United Center. The Hawks have lost five of their last six games mainly due to suddenly bad shooting.

Regardless of where the Bulls have played this season, offense has not been a strong suit for them while waiting for Derrick Rose to make his seasonal debut, which may come in as little as two weeks. Until then however, Chicago is ranked 26th in the NBA in scoring at 93.5 points per game and 19th in field goal percentage at 44.0 percent. Now, most teams shoot the ball better at home than they do on the road, but not the Bulls, as they average only 91.7 points on a putrid 42.7 percent shooting in their own building. Chicago allowed Charlotte to snap an 18-game losing streak at the United Center earlier this month, and then on Saturday the Bulls allowed the Denver Nuggets to snap a 12-game road losing streak in an ugly 97-81 loss while shooting a miserable 36.4 percent. Thankfully, the Bulls have continued to play fine defense through there shooting difficulties, ranking third in the NBA in points allowed at 92.3 per game. That average drops to a stifling 90.8 points at home, so it should come as no surprise that the 'under' is a lucrative 14-6, 70.0 percent in all Chicago home games this season with those contests averaging a combined 182.5 points.

Now, the Hawks rank smack on the middle of the pack in the NBA in scoring this year, reporting home 15th at 96.5 points per game, but Atlanta has abruptly lost its shooting touch while losing five of its last six contests. The Hawks have distressingly scored 84 points or less in four of those five losses, with the most recent being a 93-83 loss on Saturday to the team with the worst record in the NBA, the Washington Wizards. In fact, the Hawks also scored 83 points in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last week, a Cleveland team that ranks dead last in the league in field goal percentage allowed at 47.1 percent! If Atlanta cannot get out of the 80s vs. a couple of the worst teams in the league, how are the Hawks supposed to score against a stiff Chicago defense? The Haws do grade out well on the defensive end though ranking sixth in points against at 95.5 points per encounter, so this could turn into an excruciating game to watch on both sides.

The 'under' is 6-1 on the last seven head-to-head meetings including 4-0 in the last four meetings in Chicago. The 'under' is also 20-8 in the last 28 Chicago home games.

4.5-STAR CHICAGO -4 over Atlanta - This is the kind of matchup where home court makes all the difference. Before home Christmas, Atlanta defended their home court handily and now it's time for Chicago to return the favor. Look for them to hand business here.
This comes particularly after getting smoked at home Saturday night, 97-81 by Phoenix. They shot just 36% from the field in the loss. The Bulls are 6-0 ATS (7.4 ppg) since December 11, 2009 at home with at least one day of rest after a double digit loss in which they shot less than 40% from the field.

Part of the reason for having such a low percentage was getting 11 shots blocked. The Bulls are 12-0 ATS (12.5 ppg) since November 09, 2000 at home after a home loss in which they had at least 10 shots blocked.

Luol Deng struggled and went just 5-fo16 for 13 points. The Bulls are 7-0 ATS (10.0 ppg) since December 21, 2010 at home after a loss at home in which Luol Deng was not the Bulls' high scorer.

Joakim Noah wasn't any better going 4-of-13 for 10 points The Bulls are 7-0 ATS (8.9 ppg) since February 18, 2009 after a loss at home in which Joakim Noah shot worse than 33% from the field.

That left Carlos Boozer as their high scorer despite scoring just 15 points himself. The Bulls are 5-0 ATS (4.0 ppg) since February 20, 2012 at home after a loss in which Carlos Boozer was the Bulls' high scorer.

Atlanta struggled Saturday night in a 93-83 loss in Washington. They shot just 38.5% from the field. The Hawks are 0-6 ATS (-8.6 ppg) since February 02, 2010 on the road with at least one day of rest after a road loss in which they shot less than 40% from the field.

However of the 30 baskets they did score, 23 were assisted. The Hawks are 0-8 ATS (-8.1 ppg) since December 23, 2006 as a road dog after a double digit loss in which the percentage of their baskets that were assisted was at least ten percentage points higher than their season-to-date average.

As we mentioned, Atlanta won the first meeting between these teams, 92-75, at home. The Bulls are 6-0 ATS (5.2 ppg) since April 11, 2010 as a favorite when seeking revenge for a double-digit loss.

Luol Deng led Chicago in that loss with just 11 points. The Bulls are 5-0 ATS (9.3 ppg) since March 16, 2010 after losing the previous matchup in which Luol Deng was the Bulls' high scorer.

SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: CHICAGO 91, Atlanta 80

4-STAR MEMPHIS -2 over La Clippers - The Clippers big run made people think they are better than they actually are. A lot of a run like that is fueled by emotion and it takes a while to recover from that. They have turned back into a good but not great team and it should show up here.

Their last game really showed it as they lost at home to Orlando, 104-101. They attempted just six free throws in that game. Teams which attempted 6 or fewer free throws last game are 36-64 ATS.

They also lost despite committing just nine turnovers in that game after having 21 in a win over Dallas prior. The Clippers are 0-7-1 ATS (-6.9 ppg) since January 03, 2004 after a game at home in which they committed at least ten fewer turnovers than in the game before.

Memphis also committed just seven turnovers yet lost to Dallas Saturday, 104-83. The Grizzlies are 9-0 ATS (12.8 ppg) since December 22, 1996 at home with at least one day of rest after a double digit road loss in which they had at least five fewer turnovers than their season-to-date average.

When these teams played on opening night, LA won 101-92. Memphis shot just 38% in that game. The Grizzlies are 8-0 ATS (6.9 ppg) since January 21, 2011 at home when seeking revenge for a road loss in which they shot less than 40% from the field.

Still, they led by four points after the third quarter. The Grizzlies are 7-0 ATS (5.3 ppg) since November 08, 2010 at home when seeking revenge for a loss as a dog in which they led at the end of the third quarter.

Mike Conley went just 2-of-10 for seven points in that loss. The Grizzlies are 7-0 ATS (7.8 ppg) since January 15, 2011 at home as a favorite after losing the previous matchup in which Mike Conley scored fewer than 10 points.

SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: MEMPHIS 103, La Clippers 94

4-STAR Miami -2.5 over UTAH - Facing Sacramento is a perfect team to work out your offensive kinks against and Miami sure saw that Saturday night. Look for them to be out of their funk and ready to turn on the jets here.

Prior to that big win over Sacramento they had lost two straight games. Away favorites coming off a win to break a 2+ game losing streak are 284-209-9 ATS.

In that 128-99 win, Miami scored 23.5 points more than expected. The Heat are 6-0 ATS (11.5 ppg) since January 01, 2006 with at most one day of rest after a double digit road win in which their DPS was at least plus 15 points.

Miami got their shooting going in that game going 17-of-37 on threes. Teams which attempted at least 34 three pointers last game and shot more than 38% are 67-54-2 ATS. Also, the Heat are 6-0 ATS (3.5 ppg) since April 12, 2002 as a favorite with at most one day of rest after a game in which they attempted at least 10 more three pointers than their season-to-date average.

Mario Chalmers was the main sharpshooter, going 10-of-13 from long distance, scoring 34 points. The Heat are 6-0 ATS (6.2 ppg) since January 07, 2012 after Mario Chalmers increased his scoring by at least 15 points over their past two games.

Sacramento went a solid 9-of-18 on threes as well in that game. The Heat are 6-0 ATS (7.6 ppg) since March 22, 2009 on the road with at least one day of rest after a game on the road in which their opponent shot at least ten three-pointers and made at least half of them.

Miami was able to rest up in the big win with Dwyane Wade playing 25 minutes. The Heat are 6-0 ATS (14.1 ppg) since February 19, 2010 on the road after a win on the road in which Dwyane Wade played fewer than 30 minutes.

Lebron played 29 and went 7-of-10 from the field. The Heat are 5-0 ATS (4.0 ppg) since April 19, 2012 after a win in which Lebron James shot better than 66% from the field.

Utah won Saturday night, 90-87 in Detroit. They shot 50% from the field in the win. The Jazz are 0-8 ATS (-7.0 ppg) since February 13, 2012 with at most one day of rest after a win in which they shot at least 50% from the field.
