Warriors at Spurs: What Bettors Need to Know

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (-12, 203)

After jumping out to a hot start as one of the surprise teams in the league, the Golden State Warriors have hit their first rough patch. Friday's visit to the San Antonio Spurs, who have won 13 straight at home, is going to make it difficult to pull out of the slump. The Warriors have dropped four of their last five and hope to have Stephen Curry back from an ankle injury by Friday.

The Spurs own the best home record in the NBA at 17-2 and have won their last two at AT&T Center by an average of 19.5 points. Manu Ginobili will miss his second straight game on Friday due to a hamstring strain but the Spurs did not appear to miss their sixth man in a 103-82 won over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. Golden State has lost back-to-back games but has yet to drop three in a row this season. To avoid that third straight setback, the Warriors will need to win in San Antonio for the first time since 1997.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, CSBA (Golden State), FSSW (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (23-14, 20-16-1 ATS): Golden State has dropped 15 straight overall to the Spurs and 27 in a row at San Antonio. Curry, who stepped on a teammate’s foot and rolled his ankle in practice on Wednesday morning, is listed as day-to-day. Without their top scorer available against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, the Warriors went down early and were blown out 92-75 at home. Jarrett Jack moved into Curry’s starting spot, weakening what has been a very strong bench. The lack of offense has been a big problem during the recent slump as Golden State has failed to reach 90 points in three of its last four setbacks. The Warriors’ struggles are coming during a long stretch against top competition, with the Denver Nuggets, Memphis and Los Angeles Clippers marking the other three recent defeats. Golden State still has to face the Clippers, Oklahoma City and the Chicago Bulls as part of five games in eight days.

ABOUT THE SPURS (30-11, 24-16-1 SU): Four of the last five teams to come to the AT&T Center have failed to reach 90 points as San Antonio continues to improve its defense. The Spurs held the Grizzlies to 26.6 percent in the second half of Wednesday’s triumph and limited the Minnesota Timberwolves to 37.1 percent in Sunday’s 106-88 win. Ginobili is expected to miss up to two weeks with the hamstring strain but San Antonio has the pieces to cover a short absence. Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal each got over 20 minutes off the bench on Wednesday and Boris Diaw received some extra time as part of a bigger lineup. The Spurs are closing out a three-game homestand with the Warriors and will play three of their next four on the road beginning Saturday at Atlanta.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 20-6-2 ATS in the last 28 meetings.
* Over is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
* Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in San Antonio.
* Warriors are 7-19-2 ATS in the last 28 meetings.
* Road team is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Warriors are 5-16 ATS in the last 21 meetings in San Antonio.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Spurs G Tony Parker has averaged 18.8 points on 51.7 percent shooting and seven assists in 38 career games against the Warriors.

2. Golden State F David Lee has recorded four straight double-doubles.

3. San Antonio is 3-2 without Ginobili this season

WINNING POINTS

NBA

Friday, January 18

*Orlando over Charlotte by 5
Orlando heavily relies on its perimeter shooting, especially with Glen Davis out and
Hedo Turkoglu back in the lineup. Charlotte ranked dead last in defense and was second from the bottom in three-point defense. But backing the Magic as a favorite has
been a money-drainer as Orlando is only 2-6 ATS laying points this season.
ORLANDO 107-102.

***BEST BET
*Philadelphia over Toronto by 16
Huge revenge spot for Philadelphia, which was embarrassed nine days by the Raptors,
90-72. The 76ers were dead tired in that matchup playing for the sixth time in nine
days and second in two nights. Now the 76ers are rested having been home all week
and idle since Tuesday, while Toronto is playing for the third in four days.
PHILADELPHIA 103-87.

*Boston over Chicago by 2
Carlos Boozer is playing his finest ball since joining the Bulls three seasons ago and
Chicago was 14-3 ATS when playing on Friday.
BOSTON 94-92.

*Indiana over Houston by 7
Indiana’s defense should trump Houston’s offense with the Pacers at home and ranking in the top two in scoring defense and defensive field goal percentage. The Pacers
were 7-3 ATS during their past 10 home matchups.
INDIANA 97-90.

*Brooklyn over Atlanta by 3
The two teams just met Wednesday in Atlanta. Brook Lopez is playing at a high level,
but Deron Williams’ health remains a concern. Brooklyn was 4-8 ATS in its last 12
home games through this past Sunday.
BROOKLYN 103-100.

***BEST BET
*Memphis over Sacramento by 22
Sacramento ranks among the bottom five rebounding teams. The Kings’ lack of board
strength is going to get exposed against the Grizzlies’ ace front line of Marc Gasol,
Zach Randolph and Rudy Gay. The Grizzlies buried the Kings, 113-81, on the road
just 11 days ago.
MEMPHIS 112-90.

*San Antonio over Golden State by 7
The surprising Warriors would like to prove they’re for real with a strong road showing in this tough venue. Golden State was 10-7-1 ATS during its first 18 road contests.
The Spurs, though, had covered 62 percent of their first 17 home games.
SAN ANTONIO 105-98.

*Denver over Washington by 9
Denver was 4-3 when laying double digits, but Washington is in a good situational
spot as this matchup is a Thunder sandwich for the Nuggets. The Nuggets take on
Oklahoma City on the road and then meet the Thunder again at home in between
this matchup.
DENVER 105-96.

Oklahoma City over *Dallas by 10
Dirk Nowitzki has finally shown signs of coming around, but the Mavericks have horribly regressed dropping 13 of their last 17 through this past Sunday.
OKLAHOMA CITY 107-97.

Game: Golden State at San Antonio (8:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: San Antonio -12 (-110)
At 23-14 the Golden State Warriors have been the surprise team in the NBA this season. Once a team that only ran helter-skelter up and down the court, can still get out and run, but have become a more conventional NBA team. The start has been nice, but their recent play has left a bit to be desired, as they are just 1-4 in their last five games - the four losses have been by an average of more than 15 points per game. San Antonio is now the offensive king. They are only a half-point per game shy of being the highest-scoring team in the NBA. They have also been the best cover team in the NBA at home where they are 37-13-2 ATS in their last 52. Lay the points here and play on San Antonio.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball

5-Unit Play. Take #804 Philadelphia -3.5 over Toronto (7:05p.m., Friday January 18)

The Philadelphia 76ers have been struggling so far this month of December and are coming off a home loss to the New Orleans Hornets Tuesday night. The question here tonight is how do you snap out of a funk especially at home? Welcome the Toronto Raptors to your house! Philadelphia tonight will be looking to even up the score here since the Raptors beat them last week in Canada 90-72. The Raptors have dropped 3-straight and are playing 3 out fo 4 nights while the 76ers have been at home and haven't played since Tuesday night. The Raptors have struggled on the road this NBA season losing 16 out of 20 road games and again since the 76ers haven't played since Tuesday night I believe fresh legs and a squad looking to snap out of a losing streak should win tonight at home. Look for a big time game from point guard Jrue Holiday as I see the Raptors defense struggling to control Holiday and if he controls the tempo tonight Philly wins this game with ease and by double-digits.

4-STAR INDIANA over Houston - The Rockets have been struggling, mainly because they've been allowing so many points recently. Now they face one of the strongest defensive teams in the league in Indiana to add to the issues. Look for them to struggle to get things going here.
Houston's last 13 games have all been with totals over 200 including 213.5 last game vs. Dallas. This game has a much more modest total of 195. The Rockets are 0-7 ATS (-4.9 ppg) since November 26, 2010 on the road when the total is at least fifteen points lower than it was last game.
Houston lost that game at Dallas Wednesday, 105-100, for their fifth straight defeat. They were led by James Harden with 20 points in that loss. The Rockets are 0-9 ATS (-5.5 ppg) since April 15, 2012 on the road after a loss in which Patrick Patterson was not the Rockets' high scorer.
Indiana is fresh off a 97-86 loss at Orlando. The Pacers are 8-0-1 ATS (7.6 ppg) since November 24, 2006 after a road loss against the Magic.
They made just 10 foul shots in that defeat. The Pacers are 8-0 ATS (9.4 ppg) since March 19, 2010 as a favorite with at least one day of rest after a road loss in which they scored less than 15% of their points from the free throw line.
Roy Hibbert had 11 points in that game as Indiana was led by Paul George with 20. The Pacers are 8-0 ATS (11.0 ppg) since November 16, 2012 after a loss on the road in which Roy Hibbert was not the Pacers' high scorer.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: INDIANA 104, Houston 95
4.5-STAR Chicago and Boston Under 182 - Neither of these teams is high scoring to begin with. However this is also a rivalry game which should be close. That's going to further limit scoring and keep things down in this one.
Chicago is coming off a 107-105 win in Toronto Wednesday. They went to overtime in that game. The Bulls are 0-9-1 OU (-13.2 ppg) since February 05, 2010 with at most one day of rest off an overtime game.
It looked like that game was going to be much easier for Chicago as they held a big lead early on. Teams coming off a 1-2 point win where they had led by at least 15 points are 91-141 OU. Also, the Bulls are 0-12 OU (-8.6 ppg) since November 11, 2010 off a win of four points or fewer in which they held a double digit lead and shot less than 52.5% from the field.
The 105 points allowed, only five of which came in overtime, were 15.25 more than expected. The Bulls are 0-9 OU (-11.7 ppg) since November 01, 2009 on the road with at least one day of rest when their DPA was at least plus 15 points in their previous game.
Chicago was spurred by a monster game from Carlos Boozer in that one with 36 points. The Bulls are 0-6 OU (-11.8 ppg) since January 06, 2012 on the road after a win on the road in which Carlos Boozer was the Bulls' high scorer.
Boston has won six straight until they lost at home to New Orleans last game. The Celtics are 0-15 OU (-14.5 ppg) since January 05, 2005 after playing the Hornets.
They were led by Kevin Garnett with 15 points as Rajon Rondo had only seven. The Celtics are 0-7 OU (-14.5 ppg) since February 06, 2011 at home after a loss at home in which Rajon Rondo was not the Celtics' high scorer.
The 78 points Boston scored were 17.75 less than expected in that game. The Celtics are 0-6 OU (-17.9 ppg) since April 02, 1999 at home with at most one day of rest after a double digit home loss in which their DPS was minus 15 points or less.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: BOSTON 86, Chicago 84
4-STAR Oklahoma City and Dallas Under 205.5 - Oklahoma City has still been scoring plenty lately but they've also been playing quietly good defense. Over their last eight games they have not allowed more than 101 points and are allowing only 91.6 ppg over that time. They've had success focusing on defense and we see it happening again here.
Dallas has won four straight themselves, playing strong offense. A key has been sharing the ball without turning it over. The Mavericks are 0-11 OU (-15.0 ppg) since February 22, 2010 at home when their assist-to-turnover ratio was higher than two for in each of their last two games.
Russell Westbrook had a crazy game with 32 points in 28 minutes to lead Oklahoma City last game in a 117-97 win over Denver. The Thunder are 0-10 OU (-9.9 ppg) since November 28, 2010 on the road with at least a day of rest after a win in which Kevin Durant was not the Thunder's high scorer. Meanwhile, the Thunder are 0-7 OU (-9.6 ppg) since January 02, 2012 on the road after a win at home in which Russell Westbrook was the Thunder's high scorer.
Durant still scored 20 points but that came after scoring 41 in a win over Phoenix the game prior. The Thunder are 0-6 OU (-9.8 ppg) since April 01, 2011 on the road after Kevin Durant decreased his scoring by at least 15 points over their past two games.
these teams played last on Dec. 27, with Oklahoma City winning 111-105. Dirk Nowitzki was just coming back in that game and scored nine points. The Mavericks are 0-5 OU (-13.6 ppg) since February 12, 2009 as a dog after losing the previous matchup on the road in which Dirk Nowitzki was not the Mavericks' high scorer.
Serge Ibaka had a monster game in that one, with 19 points and 17 rebounds. The Thunder are 0-6 OU (-10.7 ppg) since April 23, 2011 after winning the previous matchup at home in which Serge Ibaka had a double double. SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: Oklahoma City 101, DALLAS 95

Chicago Bulls at Boston Celtics (Fri): These teams are meeting for the third time this season with each winning once in games played in Chicago. Neither team has played very well thus far with each just a handful of games above .500. Boston sits in third place in the Atlantic, while Chicago trails Indiana by 1½ in the Central.

Both teams continue to emphasize defense as the key to success although the two games in Chicago each went OVER the posted total. Boston is the healthier team and off a pair of teams near the bottom of the standings. Both teams are rested after having last played two nights earlier. BOSTON.

Take Philadelphia 76ers at -3.5 spread against Toronto Raptors risking 2 Units

This is an interesting match-up tonight. On one hand we have the Philadelphia 76ers who have been struggling recently losing their last 6 out of 7 games and on the other we have the Toronto Raptors who have been playing decent ball over the last month but are now back on the road and have dropped their last 3 games. When it has come to the NBA, I have never been one to shy away from the tough match-ups. A lot of people may tend to stay away from games like these between two struggling teams; I tend to think the opposite. It is these kinds of games where I feel we get some added value to a certain side or situation because of how poorly a team has been playing recently. We took full advantage of that on Wednesday with Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic and aim to do so again tonight, this time with Philly.

It is no secret that this Philadelphia team is struggling. They have seemingly forgot who they are as a team and have had a tough time putting together any kind of momentum. For a better part of a month not only have the 76ers been on the road, but their road schedule has forced them to play on the road against most of the top tiered teams in the league. Playing San Antonio, the Lakers, Memphis, Oklahoma City are tough enough tasks in itself, never-mind having to play them in their own back yard. A lot of the 76ers struggles can be off due to that fact The 76ers are in the midst of a brief home stand which has saw them go 1-1 so far. They won their first home game against Houston before recently falling to New Orleans. Tonight is a semi-"must win" for Philadelphia since they have a tough match up when San Antonio comes to town on Monday. This is perhaps their last shot for a win during this home stand. They are also catching the Raptors in a terrible spot.

Toronto, for as good as they have been playing the last month, they have done so from the comforts of playing in their home arena. This season the Raptors have been one of the worst road teams in the league. They are just 4-16 on the road this season. They also have not had a whole lot of recent success against the 76ers. With the exception of last weeks blowout 90-72 victory over the 76ers, Toronto had dropped the previous 3 meetings between these teams. Tonight is the perfect spot for Philadelphia to get their much needed win. With revenge on their minds from last weeks blowout loss they are catching the Raptors extremely tired as this will be their 3rd game in 5 nights while the 76ers should be well rested after being off since Tuesday. Betting the NBA comes down to situational plays and awareness. I believe that this is the perfect situation to capitalize on a struggling team. Take the 76ers.
