COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Saturday, January 19

North Carolina* over Maryland by 9
Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon has been playing circus clown, juggling the lineup even though ACC season has begun.
NORTH CAROLINA, 74-65.

Pittsburgh* over Connecticut by 4
St. John’s over DePaul by 5
Towson* over James Madison by 6
Memphis* over Harvard by 12

Penn State* over Nebraska by 7
Recent headline: ‘Miles’ options limited after injuries to Ubel, Peltz.’ They were limited before Nebraska injuries arrived. Said the coach, “We’re going to have to get some
guys on the floor who haven’t shown the consistency to deserve to be on the floor.”
Oh, that always works out well, doesn’t it?
PENN STATE, 64-57.

Temple* over St. Bonaventure by 13
Vanderbilt* over South Carolina by 10

Mississippi* over Arkansas by 20
Arkansas was 1-7 SU in SEC road games last season and has yet to win away from Bud
Walton arena this season. So, good luck to all prospective Razorbacks road-dog backers against a home side averaging 83 ppg this season.
MISSISSIPPI, 82-62.

Iowa State over TCU* by 6
Oklahoma State* over Texas Tech by 25

Florida* over Missouri by 5
Missouri likes to play in the open floor, so maybe they won’t stink it up on the road
like they often do.
FLORIDA, 82-77.

Virginia Tech* over Wake Forest by 2
Delaware* over Northeastern by 1
Xavier* over Lasalle by 5
Kansas over Texas* by 1
Purdue* over West Virginia by 1
William & Mary* over Drexel by 1
Tulsa over Tulane* by 6
Bradley* over Missouri State by 4
Wisconsin-GB* over Cleveland State by 9
Eastern Michigan* over Miami-OH by 3

Arizona over Arizona State* by 8
Opponents are shooting only 38.3% against Smokin’ Herb’s Sun Devils, probably
because most of those opponents have stunk. In addition to their Ivy League-laden
non-con stretch, ASU opened Pac 12 play with two of the first three games vs. Utah
and Oregon State.
ARIZONA, 73-65.

Cornell* over Columbia by 2
Wichita State* over Creighton by 1
UCLA* over Oregon by 2
Boise State over Air Force* by 3
Tennessee* over Mississippi State by 15
UTEP* over SMU by 9

***BEST BET
Louisville* over Syracuse by 16
In a nationally televised game late in the regular season last year, Louisville was made
to look foolish by the Orange in a road game, which didn’t mean much – road games
in February rarely do when you’re ticket to the NCAA is already punched, and the
home team is also good, and playing for a perfect home season and a 30th win, which
Syracuse (then ranked #2) was. Championship level teams win home games against
other championship level teams. After that loss, Louisville didn’t lose another game
until Kentucky in the Final Four. Revenge! The Orange are turning the ball over 14
times per game this season (before the really hard part of the slate has hit), and that’s
a bad sign heading into this arena against this foe.
LOUISVILLE, 75-59.

Providence* over Villanova by 1
Kansas State* over Oklahoma by 10
Massachusetts* over George Washington by 9
Virginia* over Florida State by 3
San Francisco* over Loyola-Marymount by 6
Stanford* over California by 3
St. Joseph’s over Penn* by 14

***BEST BET
George Mason* over Hofstra by 28
Hofstra has had a few home revivals recently against the stiffs known as Georgia State
and William & Mary, but between those much-needed home wins was a semi-hidden
15-point loss at Delaware against a Delaware team that can’t shoot straight and really
isn’t much. With an overload of 6’8” and 6’9” players to bring off the bench, GMU
should control tempo (up) and alley-oop themselves to victory over a depth-shy and
eventually dispirited visitor. Seems like one match-up that coach Hewitt can’t screw
up.
GEORGE MASON, 80-52.

***BEST BET
Cincinnati* over Marquette by 18
Teams with productive size – either scoring or rebounding – have been giving the
Bearcats mucho trouble in the last few weeks. But Marquette’s 6’8”, 290 Davante
Gardner is only a 13-5 guy in barely more than 21 minutes per game.
A team shooting less than 30% from three-point range like Marquette
is would not figure to get many good looks elsewhere against Cincinnati’s swarming D.
Late-arriving ‘depth’ helper, guard Todd Mayo, has shot 2-for-14 from the field against three real opponents.
CINCINNATI, 74-56.

Richmond* over NC Charlotte by 5
Southern Miss* over UAB by 17

Georgetown over South Florida* by 5
Wouldn’t want to buy a ticket to this game featuring
lack of scorers.
GEORGETOWN, 46-41.

Alabama* over Texas A&M by 4
Central Florida over Houston* by 1
Ohio* over Toledo by 13
Michigan State* over Ohio State by 1
Western Kentucky* over Arkansas-LR by 2

Middle Tennessee* over UL-Lafayette by 19
MTS has already pasted ULL on the road, in a December conference game, 72-58.
Nobody in the Sun Belt is scoring much against them.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE, 71-52.

Detroit* over Illinois-Chicago by 15
Denver* over Utah State by 3
Cal Poly-SLO* over Cal-Santa Barbara by 8
VCU over Duquesne* by 10 (at Consul Energy Center)
Marshall* over East Carolina by 2
Old Dominion* over Georgia State by 8
Brown* over Yale by 3
Buffalo* over Bowling Green by 2
Ball State over Central Michigan* by 1
Akron over Kent State* by 3
UNLV* over Colorado State by 6
North Texas over Florida Atlantic* by 1
Wyoming* over San Diego State by 2
Florida International* over Troy by 5
Evansville* over Indiana State by 3
Saint Louis* over Rhode Island by 17
Wisconsin-Milwaukee* over Youngstown State by 1

**PREFERRED
Valparaiso* over Wright State by 19
Wright State’s coaches feared Valpo before the season began, citing them as the team
to beat in the Horizon League. While the Raiders have eight days to drill for this game,
the eight days won’t transform them from a skinny team that needs its outside shots
to go down, or a team that can find ways to slow down a good-shooting home side or
rebound whatever Valpo might miss.
VALPARAISO, 71-52.

Idaho over Texas-Arlington by 1
Iowa* over Wisconsin by 1
Notre Dame* over Rutgers by 11
USC* over Oregon State by 4
Northern Illinois* over Western Michigan by 1
Georgia* over LSU by 1
Arkansas State* over UL-Monroe by 15
Texas-San Antonio* over Texas State by 1

Louisiana Tech* over Seattle U. by 16
New Mexico State* over San Jose State by 6

**PREFERRED
Gonzaga over Butler* by 10
Don’t they know that non-conference season is over? Butler is dealing with learning
new conference foes, and a recent injury scare to leading scorer Rotnei Clarke that
might linger, so perhaps that gives Gonzaga an edge. ‘Zags say, ‘You can’t fool us, you’re that school that got to two consecutive NCAA Championship Games. That was supposed to be us, so we want to beat you for sure!
GONZAGA, 70-60.

BYU* over San Diego by 23

NBA BASKETBALL

San Antonio over *Atlanta by 2
The Spurs owned a winning spread record this season when playing with no rest, but
were just 2-7 ATS during their past nine road contests.
SAN ANTONIO 104-102.

*Charlotte over Sacramento by 2
Tyreke Evans is back in the lineup, but the Kings are playing for the second time in
two nights and haven’t been road chalk all season.
CHARLOTTE 101-99.

***BEST BET
*New Orleans over Golden State by 10
Getting Eric Gordon back is making a big difference for the Hornets. Gordon is teaming up with Greivis Vasquez to give the Hornets backcourt scoring punch and a high
energy level. New Orleans showed its improvement knocking off Houston and San
Antonio in consecutive home games earlier this month. The Warriors just played the
Spurs on Friday night and host the Clippers in a much bigger game on Monday. So
this matchup could get overlooked.
NEW ORLEANS 100-90.

Memphis over *Chicago by 3
The Grizzlies forced 16 turnovers in beating the Bulls, 80-71, at home on Dec. 17.
The Grizzlies had covered 10 of their first 16 road contests, while Chicago was a miserable 4-15 ATS in its first 19 games at United Center.
MEMPHIS 90-87.

Houston over *Minnesota by 5
Besieged by injuries and with Ricky Rubio practically a non-factor since coming back
from a blown out knee, Minnesota is trending downward. The Rockets have been redhot, by contrast, going 11-4 SU through this past Monday.
HOUSTON 107-102.

***BEST BET
*Utah over Cleveland by 21
The Jazz’s front court is too tall and physical for the Cavaliers minus Anderson Varejao.
Al Jefferson is headed for monster numbers in this matchup. Utah had covered 66 percent of its first 15 home contests. The Jazz also have had a ton of rest and preparation having last played on Monday. This marks the tail end of a five-game road swing for the Cavaliers.
UTAH 106-85.

*Portland over Milwaukee by 8
This isn’t the time to fade Portland at home. The Trail Blazers are getting a career year
from unsung Wesley Matthews while winning their last nine games at Rose Garden
through Jan. 12. Milwaukee is playing its fourth road game in seven days.
PORTLAND 102-94.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Washington by 12
The Wizards are finally getting healthier and had covered four of the last five times
when playing on zero rest. The Clippers face Golden State on the road Monday in a
much more crucial matchup.
LA CLIPPERS 105-93.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL WEEKEND LEAN SHEET

Kansas at Texas, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2:00 ET
This contest pits the top two defenses in the country in terms of field goal percentage allowed. At 15-1, Kansas has won 14 straight games since its only loss vs. Michigan State in the second game of the season, and while the Jayhawks are averaging 76.8 points per game offensively, their defense has allowed the lowest field goal percentage in the nation at a scant 34.2 percent. Texas is second in field goal percentage allowed at 34.3 percent, and the Longhorns lead the country in effective field goal percentage against, as they lead in three-point defense and rank third in two-point defense. The difference is that Texas does not shoot the ball well at all, ranking 253rd in offensive efficiency and 305th in effective field goal percentage for. The 'under' is 13-1-1 in the last 15 Kansas road games.
Lean: Under

Syracuse at Louisville, Saturday, Jan. 19, 4:00 ET
Louisville is now the top ranked team in the country and riding an 11-game winning streak, but the Cardinals should have their hands full with the Orange here. Louisville wins with stifling defense, leading the country in defensive efficiency and ranking second in turnovers forced. However, the Cardinals will not have their usual big defensive edge here against the suffocating Syracuse zone. The Orange rank third in defensive efficiency and fourth in effective field goal percentage allowed. Syracuse also ranks a good 22nd in offensive efficiency thanks to ranking sixth in the nation in offensive rebounding percentage. Syracuse swept two low scoring affairs between these teams last season including a 52-51 win here in Louisville. Home teams coming off of 10 straight wins (Louisville) are just 32-69-2 ATS since 2011.
Lean: Syracuse

Creighton at Wichita State, Saturday, Jan. 19, 4:00 ET
Creighton is an offensive juggernaut this season as it leads the country in both effective field goal percentage and three-point shooting at a sensational 45.4 percent while also ranking third in two-point shooting. Of course it helps having a player like Player of the Year candidate Doug McDermott who is shooting 56.8 percent from the field overall including an unheard of 50.7 percent from three-point land. However, defense is not a strong suit for the Bluejays as they are 85th in points against and 83rd in field goal percentage allowed. Wichita State can exploit that as the Shockers rank 47th in effective field goal percentage including hitting on 53.6 percent of their two-point shots. The 'over' is 41-25-2 since 2007 when Creighton went 'over' in its previous game.
Lean: Over

Oregon at UCLA, Saturday, Jan. 19, 4:00 ET
UCLA has turned its season around since two players, Tyler Lamb and big man Josh Smith, left the team early in the year. The Bruins have won nine straight games while employing mostly a four-guard offense and playing a ton of zone defense. That small lineup has UCLA ranked 14th in offensive efficiency, and because the Bruins usually have four ball-handlers on the floor, they protect the ball extremely well ranking third in the nation in offensive turnover percentage. Oregon is 14-2, but the Ducks have faced a schedule ranked 302nd in SOS, with one of the losses coming on the road to a UTEP team ranked 100th by Pomeroy. UCLA is 17-9 ATS in the last 26 home games if it was also home in its previous game.
Lean: UCLA

Study Group: Saturday's Top 25 NCAAB Betting Notes

Forget about the NFL, the big games are on the college basketball board this weekend. There are a number of huge Top 25 matchups Saturday and we have news and notes for all the action:

Missouri Tigers at Florida Gators (-13, 136)

For most of Billy Donovan’s first 16 seasons as the coach with No. 9 Florida, his teams have been strong offensive teams. This edition of the Gators is easily on pace to become the best defensive squad he’s had, something No. 16 Missouri may learn the hard way on Saturday when they meet for the first time ever. During his time in Gainesville, Donovan’s teams have surrendered an average of 66.8 points, but this team is ranked third in the nation in scoring defense at 51.7 points per game and coming off another fine effort in Thursday’s 68-47 victory at Texas A&M. The Tigers counter with the country’s best rebounding team, although the uncertain status of injured leading scorer Laurence Bowers looms large against the Gators’ front line. Missouri bounced back from a 15-point loss at Mississippi last Saturday with a 79-62 win over Georgia on Wednesday.

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Longhorns (+8, 125)

With a potential marquee game on the horizon, Kansas will look to remain undefeated in Big 12 play when it visits struggling Texas on Saturday. The fourth-ranked Jayhawks enter as one of two teams without a loss in the conference. The other is No. 18 Kansas State, which hosts Kansas on Tuesday. After an overtime win against Iowa State to begin their Big 12 slate, the Jayhawks have barely been tested in victories over Texas Tech and Baylor. Freshman star Ben McLemore scored 17 points in the triumph over the Bears before exiting with a sprained right ankle. McLemore returned to practice Thursday and expects to play against the Longhorns. It has been a frustrating stretch for Texas, which lost back-to-back overtime affairs to begin Big 12 play and then lost by 20 at Iowa State last Saturday.

Arizona Wildcats at Arizona State Sun Devils (+6, 132)

An intense in-state rivalry will help take an early snapshot of the Pac-12 title race when Arizona State hosts seventh-ranked Arizona on Saturday afternoon. Both teams will look to avoid a costly second loss in what is shaping up to be a top-heavy league. The Wildcats are wrapping up a three-game road swing. They opened the stretch with their first loss - a 70-66 defeat at Oregon - but rebounded with an 80-70 win at Oregon State last Saturday. The Sun Devils also suffered their lone conference loss to the Ducks, losing 68-65 at Oregon on Sunday to snap a six-game win streak. Arizona has won 28 of the past 36 meetings in the series that dates to 1914, but Arizona State has claimed seven of the past 11, including an 87-80 home win in the most recent contest March 4.

Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas State Wildcats (-5, 124)

Oklahoma and No. 18 Kansas State are off to their best league starts in years but one will fall from the ranks of the Big 12 Conference's unbeaten on Saturday. The host Wildcats are 3-0 in Big 12 play for the second time since the league started in 1997 while the Sooners are 3-0 for the first time since an 11-0 start in 2009. Kansas State is undefeated at home and has won seven straight overall. The Sooners had five players score in double figures for the first time this year in Wednesday's 81-63 win against Texas Tech, Oklahoma's fifth straight.

Creighton Bluejays at Wichita State Shockers (-2.5, 141)

Doug McDermott and No. 10 Creighton travel to Wichita, Kan., for a matchup Saturday between the top two teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bluejays are fresh off a 79-68 win over Northern Iowa on Tuesday. McDermott, the nation's second-leading scorer at 24 points per game, tallied 21 of his 31 points in the second half to turn a five-point halftime lead into a comfortable cushion. That performance came four nights after the returning consensus First Team All-American made 14 shots in a row, singlehandedly outscored Missouri State 28-24 in the second half and finished with 39 points and 10 rebounds in Creighton's 74-52 rout of the Bears. Wichita State hosts the Bluejays with only two blemishes: a 69-60 loss to Tennessee on Dec. 13 and a 71-67 defeat at the hands of Evansville on Sunday. The Shockers beat Illinois State 74-62 on Wednesday.

Syracuse Orange at Louisville Cardinals (-7, 135)

The Cardinals have breezed through their first four conference games and are coming off a 73-58 win at Connecticut on Monday, the same day they ascended to the top spot in the national polls for the third time in school history. The Orange have had a bit more trouble staying undefeated in league play, winning their past three games by 11 points or less, including a 72-61 home win over Villanova last Saturday. Louisville has won seven of the past nine meetings, but Syracuse claimed both contests last season.

Oregon Ducks at UCLA Bruins (-5, 144)

A season after struggling to put two teams into the NCAA Tournament, the Pac-12 appears to have a plethora of worthy candidates this season. Two of the conference’s best will jockey for early positioning atop the league standings on Saturday when No. 25 UCLA hosts Oregon. The Bruins have rolled off 10 consecutive wins and won their first five conference games for the first time since 2003-04 – coach Ben Howland's first season in Westwood – after defeating Oregon State 74-64 on Thursday. The 5-0 start has UCLA a half-game ahead of Washington and Oregon, the latter of which is on a six-game winning streak but nearly blew a late 10-point lead on the road in Thursday’s 76-74 triumph over USC. The Ducks’ 4-0 mark in league play is their best since the 1973-74 team began the Pac-8 season with the same record.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (Pick, 132)

No. 17 Michigan State has been on a role since dropping its Big Ten opener at Minnesota on Dec. 31. The Spartans will put their perfect January on the line Saturday, when they host No. 11 Ohio State. The Buckeyes have had six days off since hosting rival Michigan and knocking off the last unbeaten team in the country. Traditionally among the best defensive teams in the conference, Michigan State could have its hands full with Deshaun Thomas. Thomas leads the Big Ten in scoring at 20.3 points and has put up at least 20 in each of the last four contests. The Spartans got a big game from Adreian Payne following some team-imposed discipline on Wednesday and have gone over 80 points in each of their first two Big Ten home games. Michigan State is kicking off a stretch of four of five games against ranked teams with the Buckeyes.

VCU Rams at Duquesne Dukes (+12, 146)

Two nights after a hard-fought overtime win over St. Joseph's, 19th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth will shoot for its 13th consecutive victory when it travels to Duquesne on Saturday night at CONSOL Energy Center. It's a matchup of one of the preseason favorites to win the Atlantic 10 in VCU against a Duquesne squad picked to finish last in the 16-team league. The Rams outlasted St. Joseph's, 92-86, to remain undefeated in their first season of Atlantic 10 play. They haven't lost since dropping consecutive games to Duke and Missouri in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Dukes have dropped five straight, including their first three Atlantic 10 contests. They're coming off a 79-66 loss at Massachusetts on Thursday.

UNLV Runnin' Rebels at Colorado State Rams (-3.5, 139)

UNLV looks to snap another team’s long home winning streak when the 23rd-ranked Rebels visit Colorado State, which has won 23 straight home games at Moby Arena. UNLV ended San Diego State’s 10-game home winning streak with an 82-75 win on Wednesday, while Colorado State cruised to a 39-point win over Air Force. The Rams are ranked first nationally with a plus-14.1 rebound margin, but they’ll be tested by the physical Rebels. UNLV boasts one of the top freshmen in the country in forward Anthony Bennett, who leads the Rebels in scoring (19) and rebounds (8.9). The Rams have four players averaging at least 11.4 points, including top scorer Colton Iverson (14.9).

Marquette Golden Eagles at Cincinnati Bearcats (-7, 128)

Cincinnati will try to end a three-game home-losing streak Saturday night when the No. 24 Bearcats host Marquette in a Big East game. Cincinnati might be without one of its best players, senior point guard Cashmere Wright, who sprained his left knee early in the second half of Tuesday’s victory at DePaul and did not return. Wright did not suffer structural damage, the team reported, but is considered day-to-day in his recovery. Wright is second on the team in scoring (15.1) and leads in assists (3.7) and steals (1.9). He scored 20 points before the injury against DePaul and 23 last Saturday in a victory at Rutgers. Marquette has won six in a row, including two in overtime and the others by single digits. A win against the Bearcats would go a long way toward getting the Golden Eagles into the USA Today top 25 coaches poll.

San Diego State Aztecs at Wyoming Cowboys (-1.5, 118)

San Diego State visits Wyoming on Saturday looking to rebound from an 82-75 loss to No. 23 UNLV on Wednesday. Jamaal Franklin scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but the No. 14 Aztecs allowed the Rebels to shoot 51.6 percent and were outrebounded 41-28 in the loss. Wyoming lost to Fresno State 49-36 on Wednesday, shooting 24 percent from the field. The Cowboys lost two of their first three Mountain West games and are 2-2 since leading scorer Luke Martinez broke his right hand during a bar fight on Dec. 30. Martinez was also arrested for aggravated assault and suspended indefinitely over the weekend.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-12.5, 138)

Offensive efficiency was one of several reasons No. 20 Notre Dame was able to match its longest winning streak in coach Mike Brey’s tenure. On Saturday, the Fighting Irish hope to avoid their longest losing streak in almost three years when they host Rutgers. Notre Dame shot 53.3 percent and averaged 78.3 points during a 12-game run that ended with last Saturday’s 65-58 loss to Connecticut. The Irish fell under both marks for the second straight game in Tuesday’s 67-63 setback at St. John’s. Notre Dame hasn’t lost three in a row since Feb. 11-17, 2010, but will try to reassert its home dominance against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is off to its best start since beginning the 2005-06 season with a 12-4 record after Thursday’s 70-67 victory over South Florida.

Gonzaga Bulldogs at Butler Bulldogs (+2, 138)

Butler will be shorthanded when it hosts No. 8 Gonzaga in a non-conference game Saturday. The No. 13 Bulldogs will be without leading scorer Rotnei Clarke, who suffered a neck injury in last Saturday's victory at Dayton when he crashed headfirst into a support post under the basket. Clarke, a senior point guard who transferred from Arkansas, averages 16.3 points while shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range. Alex Barlow is expected to start in his place for the second consecutive game, but the Bulldogs will need a team effort to fill his shoes in the scoring column. Gonzaga’s only loss this season came against Illinois, which also handed Butler one of its two defeats. Butler still has the size to match up with the Bulldogs. Andrew Smith, a 6-11 senior center who averages 12 points and 5.2 rebounds, will likely be locked up against Gonzaga’s leading scorer, 7-1 junior Kelly Olynyk.

Three Tips for Betting the Shortened NHL Season
by Jon Cambell

The NHL schedule has officially been released, which means we can begin to look at some puck value. Before we dig into the schedule (which we’ll do more in-depth this week) here are three items to keep in mind when betting this shortened 48-game season.

1. Look hard at underdogs on short rest – The tendency is to want to fade the team that has played a bunch in a short period, say four games in five nights. But keep in mind these lines will be inflated, which is something we learned from the NBA’s lockout-shortened season last year when teams would face the tiresome task of playing three games in three nights.

“No matter what the number was adjusted to the player felt they had to play it anyway,” said Jeff Sherman, oddsmaker at the Las Vegas Hotel.

Unlike the NBA last year, teams will only be playing within their own conference this season so I think we could see some value here on the squads playing on short rest as public perception skews the line.

2. Least change, most value – Look for teams that had the most success last season, combined with the least roster shake-ups this season.

“If you compare it to the NBA last year, the teams who had the least roster change, excelled the most in general,” says bet365 trades manager Aron Black.

Think of the L.A. Lakers this year. They made some monster moves in the summer that made them the overwhelming favorite in the West. Now they’re wondering if they’ll make the playoffs.

The Minnesota Wild and Carolina Hurricanes made splashes in free agency this offseason – and are seeing some strong Stanley Cup futures action as a result – but keep in mind neither team made the playoffs last year.

3. Chew on some chalk – Everybody loves an underdog, but with the Pens, Rangers and Kings all available as high as between 8-1 to 10-1, there is some strong value with the faves. Looking back to last season, the top eight teams in the East after 48 games were still the top eight teams in the East at the end of the season according to TSN. Same holds true for seven of the eight teams in the West last year. Looking back again to the NBA-shortened season, the preseason favorite Miami Heat won the championship against the West preseason No. 2 favorite, Oklahoma City.

NHL's Best & Worst Bets of the 2011-12 Season

With the NHL lockout finally coming to an end, it’s time to start thinking about how to handicap the upcoming season.

Here’s a look back at the best and worst bets on ice last season:

Best Moneyline

New Jersey Devils (48-28-2-4, +20.25 units)

The Devils may have come up short in the Stanley Cup final but New Jersey was the NHL bettors' champion, earning more than 20 units last season.

Worst Moneyline

Montreal Canadiens (31-35-4-12, -19.58 units)

Les Habitants weren’t just a headache for Montreal faithful and finished 31-35-4-12, dead last in the Eastern Conference, and burned just about any NHL bettor who touched them.

Best Puckline (ATS)

Carolina Hurricanes (51-31 ATS)

The Hurricanes only posted a 33-33-16 SU record and missed the playoffs, but they were one hell of a bet in 2011-12.

Phoenix Coyotes (50-32 ATS)

The Coyotes were the Pacific champs last season, making the transition from long-standing underdog to favorite on most nights.

Winnipeg Jets (48-34 ATS)

It seemed like the Jets were underdogs in almost every game last season, and it looks like that could be the case again this year.

Worst Puckline (ATS)

San Jose Sharks (28-54 ATS)

The Sharks had a respectable 43-29-10 record SU last season, but were still the worst bet in the league.

Philadelphia Flyers (29-53 ATS)

Much like the Sharks, the Flyers had success SU but failed miserably ATS.

Buffalo Sabres (33-49 ATS)

Buffalo found itself on the outside looking in come playoff time even with Ryan Miller in goal. Hopefully you faded them last season.

Best OVER Plays

Tampa Bay Lightning (52-29-1 O/U)

Steven Stamkos netted 60 goals and four others had 20 or more. Enough said.

Boston Bruins (46-33-3 O/U)

The Bruins had a balanced attack led by Tyler Seguin and five others who scored 20 times or more.

Toronto Maple Leafs (45-37-0 O/U)

This team is a mess. Horrible goaltending is just one reason for Toronto’s impressive over numbers.

Best UNDER Plays

Anaheim Ducks (31-47-4 O/U)

Anaheim was a one-trick pony last season and opposing clubs eventually found out how to shut down its top line of Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan. Oh, and they also have a pretty good goalie in Jonas Hiller.

Detroit Red Wings (34-44-4 O/U)

The Red Wings exemplified great team defense and injuries limited their offensive production throughout the season.

St. Louis Blues (21-43-18 O/U)

The Blues were incredibly hard to score against thanks to the formidable duo of Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak in net.

DENVER MONEY

1* New York Islanders +105

I think the Islanders will be an improved team this year and I do believe that the line is low for a good reason and could move a little more before the puck drops tomorrow as well. New Jersey lost a few key players in the long off season include Zach Parise which I do believe they will miss in the long run. This will be a close fought match and I look for Taveras and the Islanders to get the home dog winner on Day 1.

James Madison at Towson 12:00PM

5* Towson -4
Even in the midst of a 1-31 season of last, Towson only lost this matchup by 2 and 6 points LY. Now the Tigers are growling, with a 9-3 ATS record, including 4-1 SUATS in league play. JMU had a mid-week meltdown on the road at George Mason, resulting in an 11 point loss after leading in the second half. It dropped their record as traveler this season to 1-6 SU, 2-4 ATS. Don’t think it gets any better against the nation’s most improved team, thanks to transfers Benimon (G’town), Burwell (S. Fla) and Dixon (Prov). The Tigers have covered 8 straight on the road, but the 1-3 SU, 1-2 ATS mark on a Towson Center home court where they are 8-37 SU 3+Y, prevents us from taking off rubber band.

San Antonio Spurs at Atlanta Hawks (Sat): This is a back to back spot for both teams as each played Friday night. Atlanta was on the road at Brooklyn while San Antonio hosted Golden State. The Spurs have fared well against a more talented Hawks team in recent seasons, winning their lone meeting last year by 22 points and sweeping the series a season earlier with wins of seven and 16 points.

Spurs head coach Greg Popovich has long been one of the best at managing his personnel and should be better prepared for his team to play better in a second straight game for both teams. SAN ANTONIO.

Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Cleveland Cavaliers +9
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been much more competitive in their last five games, and I like their chances of staying within single-digits of the Utah Jazz tonight, possibly pulling off the upset.

Cleveland is 3-1-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall. That includes a 99-83 home win over Atlanta as a 4-point dog, as well as a 93-88 road win at Portland as a 6-point dog. They also lost 91-98 at Denver as a 12.5-point dog, and 118-124 at Sacramento as a 6-point dog during this stretch.

The Jazz are in a huge letdown spot tonight. They have won their last two contests, which included a 104-97 home victory over the defending champion Miami Heat last time out. Off such a big win, it will be hard for Utah to get up emotionally to face the Cavaliers tonight. As a result, it will be difficult for the Jazz to cover this inflated number.

This play falls into a system that is 46-21 (68.7%) ATS over the last 5 seasons. It tells us to bet against home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (UTAH) - hot team - having covered 6 or 7 of their last 8 against the spread, with a winning percentage of between 45-55% on the season. Bet the Cavaliers Saturday.
NCAA-B Jan 19 '13 (12:30p)
HARVARD vs MEMPHIS U HARVARD
+11-110
15* CBB Saturday Undervalued Underdog on Harvard +11
The Harvard Crimson are one of the most underrated teams in the country under former Michigan head coach Tommy Amaker. This team is much better than its 9-5 record would indicate as it has had some very close losses to some very good teams.

In fact, four of Harvard's five losses this season have come by less than 11 points. That includes road losses to UMass (64-67) as an 11-point dog, UConn (49-57) as a 9-point dog, and St. Mary's (69-70) as a 12-point dog. They have also won at Boston College (79-63) as a 4-point dog and at California (67-62) as an 11-point dog.

Memphis really only has one very good win this season, which was an 85-80 win at Tennessee as a 2.5-point underdog. This team has lost to the three best teams it has faced in Louisville, Minnesota and VCU all by 9 points or more. The Tigers are clearly overvalued today as a double-digit favorite.

Harvard is 7-0 ATS in road games when playing only their 2nd game in 8 days over the last 2 seasons. It is winning in this spot by 14.8 points/game. The Tigers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games. The Crimson are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. These three trends combine for a 15-0 system backing the Crimson. Roll with Harvard Saturday.

NCAA-B Jan 19 '13 (1:00p)
NEBRASKA vs PENN STATE PENN STATE
-4-106
15* CBB Saturday No-Doubt Rout on Penn State -4
The Penn State Nittany Lions are very hungry for their first Big Ten victory of the season. They played Michigan State tough at home on Wednesday, and I look for them to get that elusive first conference win today.

They'll host the lowly Nebraska Cornhuskers, who I feel are the worst team in the Big Ten. They are just 2-5 on the road this season, scoring 57.9 points/game away from home. They are also winless in Big Ten play, which includes an 0-3 road record. They have lost all three of their conference road games by 10 points or more.

The home team one both meetings last season in Nebraska's inaugural Big Ten campaign. In fact, both were blowouts as the Huskers won 70-58 on January 11th, while the Nittany Lions had their revenge with a 67-51 triumph on February 11th.

Penn State is a perfect 6-0 ATS in home games after failing to cover 3 of their last 4 against the spread over the last 3 seasons. Take Penn State Saturday.

NCAA-B Jan 19 '13 (1:45p)
Arkansas vs MISSISSIPPI Arkansas
+10½-110
25* SEC GAME OF THE YEAR on Arkansas +10.5
The Arkansas Razorbacks are showing their best value of the season as a double-digit underdog at Ole Miss Saturday. This is a team on the rise under second-year head coach Mike Anderson, and they are clearly underrated right now despite a solid 11-5 start.

I have no doubt that Ole Miss is one of the most overrated teams in the country after seeing them play several times this season. Ole Miss is off to a 14-2 start, but it is nowhere near as good as its record would indicate. It needed overtime to win at Vanderbilt last time out despite being a 9-point favorite.

This has been a very closely-contested rivalry in recent years. In fact, each of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2008 have been decided by 10 points or less. That makes for a perfect 10-0 system backing the Razorbacks pertaining to today's 10.5-point spread.

Ole Miss is 0-6 ATS in home games after covering 4 or 5 of their last 6 against the spread over the last 3 seasons. Bet Arkansas Saturday.

NCAA-B Jan 19 '13 (2:00p)
WAKE FOREST vs VIRGINIA TECH VIRGINIA TECH
-4-110
15* ACC PLAY OF THE DAY on Virginia Tech -4
The Virginia Tech Hokies (10-6) have played an absolutely brutal schedule in their last six games. They finally put an end to a 4-game losing streak by going on the road and knocking off Georgia Tech 70-65 in overtime as a 10-point underdog.

I like the Hokies to pick up back-to-back wins Saturday while facing the lowly Wake Forest Demon Deacons (9-7). Virginia Tech is 7-2 at home this season where it is outscoring opponents by 10.5 points/game. It has impressive home wins over both Oklahoma State and Iowa.

Wake Forest is just 2-5 on the road this season, getting outscored by 7.3 points/game. It has blowout road losses to both Duke (62-80) and Clemson (44-60) in conference play. I expect a third straight blowout road loss for the Demon Deacons in ACC action today.

The home team has won seven of the last nine meetings in this series. Virginia Tech has won eight of the last 10 meetings. The Hokies are 5-0 in their last 5 home meetings with Wake Forest dating back to 2006. Take Virginia Tech Saturday.

WISCONSIN vs Iowa Iowa
0-106
15* Big Ten PLAY OF THE DAY on Iowa PK
The Iowa Hawkeyes (12-5) opened with a brutal Big Ten schedule, losing their first three to the likes of Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State. However, they proved what they were capable of by nearly upsetting both the Hoosiers (65-69) and Spartans (59-62).

Iowa exploded for its first Big Ten victory last Sunday in a 70-50 triumph at Northwestern. This is one of the more underrated teams in the country, and it is capable of beating anyone at home inside of rowdy Carver Hawkeye Arena.

The Wisconsin Badgers are in a huge letdown spot here after winning at Indiana 64-59 as a 10.5-point underdog on Tuesday. They have opened 4-0 in Big Ten play with two of their wins coming over lowly Penn State and Nebraska by single-digits. As a result, they are overvalued right now.

Iowa is 8-1 ATS in home games versus teams who attempt 21 or more 3 point shots/game on the season over the last 2 seasons. The Hawkeyes are in all home games over the last 2 seasons. Iowa is 11-1 ATS after failing to cover 2 of their last 3 against the spread over the last 2 seasons. The Hawkeyes are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win. Bet Iowa Saturday.

UTAH U vs WASHINGTON U UTAH U
+11-110
15* Utah/Washington Pac-12 Late-Night BAILOUT on Utah +11
The Utah Utes are one of the most underrated teams in the country due to their 8-9 start. They are highly motivated for their first Pac-12 victory of the season Saturday. Clearly, when you look at most of their losses this season, its easy to see that this team is much better than its record would indicate.

Seven of Utah's eight losses have come by 10 points or less. That includes road losses to Arizona State (54-55) as an 8-point dog, to Arizona (57-60) as a 19-point dog, and home to UCLA (53-57) as a 7-point dog. There's no question that the Utes have what it takes to play with the Huskies tonight.

Washington is on a nice run right now, but with this run comes expectations from oddsmakers that it cannot live up to. It has won four straight while beating Washington State, Cal and Stanford on the road while also knocking off Colorado at home. The Huskies could easily be overlooking the Utes tonight and looking ahead to a five-game stretch that includes Oregon State, Oregon, Arizona, Arizona State and UCLA.

This play falls into a system that is 31-6 (83.8%) ATS over the last 5 seasons. It tells us to bet on road underdogs of 10 or more points (UTAH) - a poor offensive team (63-67 PPG) against a good defensive team (63-67 PPG), after allowing 75 points or more 2 straight games.

Utah is 12-3 ATS after 5 or more consecutive losses since 1997. Washington is 4-12 ATS after a win by 10 points or more over the last 2 seasons. The Utes are 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Utah is 5-1-1 ATS in its last 7 road games. Roll with the Utes Saturday.

3-Unit Play. #533 Take Arkansas +9.5 over Mississippi (Saturday @ 1:30 pm est)
As with the plays below, oddsmakers seem to put too much emphasis on home teams and whether or not they should be big favorites. We know Arkansas can bring it at home. I'd like to think this is a game on the road where the Hogs can come to play. Both teams want to push the tempo and get the score in the 80s, so in that sense Arkansas won't be intimidated by the feel of the game. Seven of the last eight games for the Razorbacks have gone their way. I'm not sure if they win this one, but I certainly see a cover for the road team here against Ole Miss.
3-Unit Play. #573 Take Southern Methodist +9 over UTEP (Saturday @ 4 pm est)
These Mustangs are very capable of winning this game outright. UTEP shouldn't really be laying this heavy of a number to most teams, and especially not to one that has a better record than the Miners. The road team has really done well in past meetings when these two teams clash, and this should be another example of the squad catching the points cashing at the betting window. SMU also has a little sense of urgency on their side as they look to scramble to avoid further dropping the the Conference USA standings. The underdog comes through here for us.
3-Unit Play. #575 Take Syracuse +7 over Louisville (Saturday @ 4 pm est)
I know James Southerland is out for the 'Cuse, but I am still convinced Syracuse has a great shot to win this one outright. Plus, no one team has really last long atop the national rankings, so this very well could be the continuing of a trend for the top team to lose. Plus, I just never was one to buy into Louisville being as good as others throughout to begin the season. Syracuse are well coached and their 2-3 zone should do well to keep an athletic team settling for jump shots the entire game. Give me the Orange over the Cardinals.
3-Unit Play. #593 Take Marquette +6.5 over Cincinnati (Saturday @7 pm est)
With Cashmere Wright out for the Bearcats, this is too many points to be laying to a Marquette team that gets up and ready for every single game behind its quality coach Buzz Williams, who prepares his team as well as any coach in the country. Cincinnati isn't a good as their record suggests, and something to me tells me the home team is being well overvalued, especially down one of the team's best players. Marquette is a live dog here, and we'll get on them and the number in this Big East match-up.
3-Unit Play. #669 Take Gonzaga -3 over Butler (Saturday @ 9 pm est)
Without Rotnei Clarke this game seems evident to go the way of the WCC's Gonzaga Bulldogs. I know Butler at home is a tough out, but they are without their best player and so they just aren't the same team that pasted North Carolina in Maui early in the season or the team that beat Indiana. Gonzaga have far more weaponry to score the basketball and I think they will be very well prepared behind head coach Mark Few for this late non-conference match-up. The 'Zags might just run away with this one.

(7pm) Take #504 CHARLOTTE +2 over Sacramento

62% of the public on the Kings. ALWAYS GO WITH POINT SPREADS AIMED AT SUCKERS! If a number looks funny always side with the people who set it. Each played last night, and both have been “go-against” when playing unrested (Sacto 12-18 vs. the number last 2+ seasons; Charlotte 10-23 the last 1+). These are two of the worst defensive teams in the league, both yielding more than 103 ppg. Walker has emerged as Charlotte's key offensive threat in his second season, leading the team with averages of 17.5 points and 5.6 assists.Facing Sacramento gives Charlotte a golden opportunity to earn its first home win since Sessions hit the decisive jumper with 28 seconds left in a 98-97 victory over Toronto on Nov. 21. The Kings are 3-15 on the road, giving up an average of 101.2 points. Those troubles away from home continued Friday as Sacramento opened this three-game trip with an 85-69 loss to Memphis. The Kings set a season low in points and matched their worst effort from the field with 34.1 percent. Play on: BOBCATS.

4.5-STAR Golden State +5 over NEW ORLEANS - Golden State comes into this one in real need of a win. While they've lost five of six now, their schedule over that stretch has been absolutely brutal. Even though they are banged up we expect they have targeted this game to try to get with two more elite teams up next on the schedule.
Golden State is on the second half of a weekend back-to-back here. The Warriors are 8-0 ATS (9.6 ppg) since November 27, 2010 as a road dog on Saturday after playing on Friday.
They lost last night 95-88 to San Antonio. The Warriors are 9-0 ATS (13.1 ppg) since January 15, 2012 when playing the second of back-to-back road games after losing the first.
It was a game where they led by double digits in the first half. The Warriors are 6-0 ATS (12.2 ppg) since January 05, 2011 with at most one day of rest off a loss as an away dog in which they led by 10+ points.
The 95 points they allowed were 11.5 less than expected. The Warriors are 8-0 ATS (10.1 ppg) since February 29, 2012 on the road after a loss in which their DPA was negative.
Klay Thompson had 21 points in that game and they were led by David Lee with 22. The Warriors are 13-0 ATS (9.8 ppg) since March 05, 2012 on the road after a loss in which Klay Thompson was not the Warriors' high scorer.
New Orleans meanwhile is coming off a surprising 90-78 win in Boston. They overcame a healthy deficit in that game. The Hornets are 0-7 ATS (-9.6 ppg) since May 02, 2003 as a home favorite with at least one day of rest off a win as an away dog in which they trailed by 10+ points.
That was also a big defensive effort allowing 17.8 points less than expected. The Hornets are 0-8 ATS (-9.6 ppg) since April 29, 2008 at home with at least one day of rest after a double digit win in which their DPA was minus 15 points or less.
They found success even with just 12 assists on 31 baskets in that game. The Hornets are 0-8 ATS (-11.4 ppg) since December 06, 2005 with two or more days of rest after a game on the road in which less than 40% of their baskets were assisted.
The huge difference was their 26-6 scoring edge at the foul line. The Hornets are 0-8 ATS (-11.1 ppg) since November 05, 2008 as a favorite after a game in which their opponent shot less than 60% from the free-throw line.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: Golden State by 3
4-STAR Golden State and New Orleans Under 188 - With the Hornets as a defensive oriented, low scoring team, Golden State would be the ones normally looking to push this over. However, they've had no rest. The Warriors are 8-21 OU (-4.8 ppg) since December 12, 2009 when playing the second of back-to-back road games. Look for this one to stay under as well.
Golden State lost last night but kept things close with defense, 95-88 against San Antonio. They committed just nine turnovers while attempting 84 shots in that game. The Warriors are 0-6 OU (-5.9 ppg) since December 12, 2009 as a road dog with no rest after a game on the road in which their field goal attempt per turnover ratio was at least eight.
New Orleans is coming off a 90-78 win in Boston. The Hornets are 0-7 OU (-13.5 ppg) since April 18, 2000 after a road win against the Celtics.
New Orleans had 17 turnovers and just 12 assists in that game. The Hornets are 0-11-1 OU (-17.5 ppg) since March 26, 2003 with two or more days of rest if not an 8+ point favorite after a game on the road in which they had more turnovers than assists.
Boston actually had three more baskets than New Orleans in that game. The Hornets are 0-8 OU (-15.6 ppg) since November 09, 2010 with at least one day of rest after a win in which they made fewer baskets than their opponent.
The difference was a huge 26-6 edge for NO at the foul line. The Hornets are 0-6 OU (-4.9 ppg) since February 28, 1998 with two or more days of rest after a double digit win in which they scored more than 25% of their points from the free throw line.
That helped them overcome 2-of-17 three point shooting. The Hornets are 0-6 OU (-10.8 ppg) since March 15, 2000 with two or more days of rest after a double digit win in which they scored less than 10% of their points from the three-point line.
These teams met last in December with Golden State winning 103-96. Ryan Anderson led New Orleans with 28 points in the loss. The Hornets are 0-9 OU (-12.7 ppg) since December 01, 2012 after losing the previous matchup in which Austin Rivers was not the Hornets' high scorer.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: 179 points
4-STAR UTAH over Cleveland - Cleveland picked up a hard fought win in Portland last night. That's no easy task and that took every this Cavaliers squad had. They have a real lack of depth as is and it really catches up to them in games like this.
Utah meanwhile is going to be well rested and prepared for this game. Due to a scheduling quirk, they have four days rest coming in and three days rest after. The Jazz are 6-0 ATS (5.2 ppg) since February 19, 2008 when playing an isolated home game (2+ rest before and after).
When they last played on Monday, they defeated Miami, 104-97. That despite 54% shooting from the Heat. The Jazz are 7-0 ATS (13.9 ppg) since March 05, 2008 at home after a home win in which they allowed at least 50% from the field.
The key was dominating the available boards with a huge 40-23 edge. The Jazz are 8-0 ATS (5.9 ppg) since March 07, 2007 at home after a home win in which they controlled at least 60% of the available rebounds.
Al Jefferson led the way with 23 points in that game. The Jazz are 6-0 ATS (10.5 ppg) since March 16, 2011 at home with at least a day of rest after a win in which Al Jefferson was the Jazz's high scorer.
Kyrie Irving really shouldered the load for Cleveland last night, scoring 31 points and 13-of-24 shooting. The Cavaliers are 0-5 ATS (-3.5 ppg) since February 21, 2012 after a win in which Kyrie Irving took more than 20 shots. SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: UTAH 108, Cleveland 93

3-Unit Play. Take #512 Utah -8.5 over Cleveland (9:05 p.m., Saturday January 19)

Yes this is a big number but the Jazz front line is too big and too physical for the short-handed Cavaliers tonight in Utah. Utah is a tough place to steal a road game and the Cavs have dropped 4 out of 5 road games and tonight in Salt Lake City this trend continues. If the Cavs had Anderson Varejao I probably would touch this game but since the Cavs again playing without him I see the Jazz pounding the ball down low and winning the physical side of this game. Utah Jazz stud Al Jefferson has a big game on the boards and he has a big game scoring tonight and Jefferson is the main reason why the Jazz cover this home number.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NHL Hockey

3-Unit Play. #1 Take Pittsburgh -120 vs. Philadelphia (Saturday @ 3:05 pm est)
Pittsburgh did little to overhaul its roster during the offseason, believing the core that fell to Philadelphia in the opening round of last spring's playoffs remains strong enough to compete for a Stanley Cup. After nearly two full seasons of playing without at least one of their stars because of injury, the Penguins were at full strength and considered one of the favorites to reach the Stanley Cup Final. The Penguins are built to have No. 87 and No. 71 win games for them, especially in the playoffs. ?Sid the Kid? Crosby has been leading a handful of teammates onto the ice for drills four days a week and few places in the league that have shown as much solidarity during the four-month-old lockout. The Penguins believe that can only pay off when things get going for real. Pittsburgh, which hopes a quick start will lead to an even better finish.
3-Unit Play. #18 Take St. Louis Blues -140 vs. Detroit (Saturday @ 8:05 pm est)
St. Louis Head Coach Ken Hitchcock's philosophy and formula for winning is the same. It's three competitive center icemen, good depth on defense and great goaltending. That's what wins in the NHL. You look at all the teams that did well this year, that's what they've got. The Blues have it within their group. The Blues boast one of the best blue-line corps in the League along with a deadly goaltending duo of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott. If this young team can grow, stay healthy and learn from last season's sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings, they have a chance to raise the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. The Blues could be the most dangerous team in the League and St. Louis has dominated at the Scottrade Center. No sour notes played by the Blues on Opening Night.

2-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 198.5 Cleveland at Utah (9 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19)
The Jazz love to run and gun at home and I have a hard time seeing them staying under 105 points tonight. In fact, it should be even worse. The Cavs have given up 124 points to the Kings, 113 to the Lakers and 98 to Denver in three of their last four games. They have gotten hit for more than 100 points in 6 of their last 10 games. They just don't defend. Utah has given up 100 or more points in three of five games and the only two times they didn't were against struggling offenses in Atlanta (95) and Detroit (90). Losing Anderson Varejao and gaining Kyrie Irving completely changes the complexion of this Cavs team. The 'over' is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Utah and 6-2 in the last eight meetings anywhere.

3-Units Take #1 Pittsburgh (-125) over Philadelphia (3pm, Saturday, January 19th)
1-Unit Take #1 Pittsburgh (-1.5 +230) over Philladelphia

The Flyers ended the Penguins season last year in the first round in a series that turned ugly with hits and fights and what was even worse was the goaltending. It may seem that even team has had only a week to prepare for the season but in reality that is not true, some teams had guy's play together in the minors while other teams skated together in practices and then some teams had guy's spread out all over in different leagues. The Penguins had their core guys skating together and while they added some new pieces this is a team that is mainly intact and use to each other, while Philadelphia didn't go out and make that big off season move but did add some new defense to the blue line witch won't jell overnight. I think the Penguins who are a 100% healthy are ready to start the season while I think Philadelphia would benefit from a week or two to get right. The Flyers will also be without the servicesof Danny Briere and I still think goalie ILya Bryzgalov is still a liability in net, not good vs a talented and deep Pittsburgh
team.

2-Units Take #12 New York Islanders (http://mail.aol.com/37309-111/aol-6/en-us/Lite/MsgRead.aspx?folder=OldMail&uid=33380271&seq=0&searchIn=none&searchQuery=&start=0&sort=received&sortDir=descending#) (+105) over New Jersey (7pm, Saturday, January 19th)

The Islanders will surprise some people this year, I'm not saying they will be raising the cup anytime soon but this hockey team has some good young talent that has played together for a couple of years now. I understand people are going to look at this line and think back to last year with the Devils coming up two games short of winning the Stanley Cup but this isn't the same Devils team. New Jersey has more then enough turnover which doesn't work well for the short time of practice that they have had for everybody to get used to they new teammates and the Devils system that they play. This is a huge edge for the Islanders and I'm telling you know this Islanders team is underrated. I think New York should be a ten cent favorite here but because of the names on the front of the jersey's you won't see that number. Take this value with the Islandsers.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks

The San Antonio Spurs (30-11, 24-16-1 ATS) are one of the highest scoring teams in the NBA and their defense has not been intense on the road, so look for a high scoring game vs. the Atlanta Hawks (22-16, 15-22-1 ATS) at Philips Arena in Atlanta Saturday at 7:05 ET. Each of these teams are playing the second game of a back-to-back, as San Antonio played host to Golden State at home Friday night while the Hawks were in Brooklyn to take on the Nets.

The Spurs have one of the most potent offenses in the league as they rank third in scoring at 104.8 points per game, second in field goal percentage at a blistering 48.7 percent and third in three-point shooting at 39.1 percent. The San Antonio offense is so hot that it even put up 103 points vs. one of the best defenses in the NBA in Memphis on Wednesday, making the Spurs just the fourth team all year to reach 100 points vs. the Grizzlies. San Antonio is tough to defend because it is so deep and so many of the Spurs can hit shots from anywhere on the floor, which is the main reason they have seven players averaging at least nine points per game. Now, the Spurs are playing better defense this year than they did last season, ranking 11th in the league in points against at 96.4 per game. However, there is a large disparity in San Antonio's points allowed at home vs. away, as the Spurs allow only 92.0 points per game at home but 100.1 points per road game. When you add in the 103.6 points the Spurs are scoring themselves away from home, it makes for a rather high road average of 203.7 combined points per contest.

Now the Hawks have been in an overall shooting slump lately that has seen them score 84 points or less in five of their last eight games, but most of those shooting difficulties have come on the road, as Atlanta has exceeded 100 points in each of its last two home games including putting an end to the Nets' seven-game winning streak with a 109-95 win on Wednesday in the first game of a home-and-home series. The Hawks are now down to 17th in the NBA in scoring overall at 95.8 points per game, but that average zooms all the way up to 100.1 points here at Philips Arena while plummeting to 91.5 points on the road. As a result, the 'over' has gone 12-7 in all Atlanta home games. Also, keep in mind that the Hawks scored 109 points against the Nets the other night without the help of leading scorer Josh Smith, who was suspended for one game for conduct detrimental to the team. Smith was expected to rejoin the team on Friday night in Brooklyn.

The Spurs have tended to play high scoring games in the second of back-to-backs, as the 'over' is 10-4-1 in their last 15 games playing without a day off. The 'over' is also 7-3 in the last 10 Atlanta non-conference games.
