Bank Shots: NBA betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 13-19

Hottest ATS team

Washington Wizards (2-2 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Wizards have covered in six straigh gamest and eight of their last nine. The return of PG John Wall (knee) from injury has helped bolster the offense and Washington hasn’t been getting much respect from oddsmakers lately. The Wizards covered as double-digit dogs in their last two games at Denver and Los Angeles. Despite their horrendous SU record of 8-30, Washington has been a good bet with a 22-14-2 ATS mark.

Coldest ATS team

Houston Rockets (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Rockets have dropped seven straight overall, failing to cover in each of those contests. Houston hasn’t had any issues scoring, but its matador team defense (30th allowing 103.5 ppg) is a major cause for concern. The Rockets were the hottest over bet in the Association out of the gates but oddsmakers are catching on, setting most of their totals well above 200 the past few weeks. Houston has a good chance to stop the bleeding Monday in Charlotte.

Best over team

Toronto Raptors (0-4 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Raptors finished 2012 on an absolute tear, but they’re settling back into reality in January. Toronto has dropped four straight overall, smashing the totals in those contests. The Raptors have allowed an average of 108.7 points per game during the skid, but keep in mind two of those contests went to overtime. Toronto has a tough start to this week. The Raps host the Lakers Sunday afternoon before heading to Miami for a showdown with the Heat on Wednesday.

Best under team

San Antonio Spurs (4-0 SU, 0-4 over/under)

The Spurs’ roster may be aging, but the grizzled vets sure aren’t slacking on the defensive end. San Antonio allowed opponents to score an average of 87.7 points this past week, 8.4 points less than its season average of 96.1. The Spurs have a chance to really pull away from the pack in the West in the next couple weeks as their next eight opponents are all currently sub-.500 teams.

Scouting the schedule:

-The Philadelphia 76ers play 10 of their next 11 games at the friendly confines of the Wells ***** Center. The Sixers begin a season-long eight-game homestand when they host the Knicks Saturday. Philadelphia boasts a 16-4 over mark at home this season.

- The Detroit Pistons are back on American soil after their much-anticipated date with the Knicks across the pond in England last week. The Pistons had a few days to rest after Thursday’s loss but now play five games in seven nights, including tough stops in Chicago and Miami.

Nets at Knicks: What bettors need to know

Brooklyn Nets at New York Knicks (-3.5, 193.5)

Carmelo Anthony has torched the Brooklyn Nets this season and looks to do so again on Monday when the New York Knicks play on Martin Luther King Day for the 14th consecutive year. Anthony is averaging 37 points in three games against Brooklyn this season, including a 45-point effort on Dec. 11. The All-Star forward has scored 20 or more points in 25 consecutive games. Brooklyn is two games behind New York in the Atlanta Division.

The Nets have won eight of their last nine games and have played solidly under interim coach P.J. Carlesimo. Brooklyn has a splendid 10-2 mark since Carlesimo replaced fired Avery Johnson. The Nets need a victory for a season split with the Knicks. New York is back on the mainland after beating the Toronto Raptors in London. The Knicks have won back-to-back contests following a stretch in which they lost five of seven games. New York is 14-5 at home.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), MSG (New York), NBATV

ABOUT THE NETS (24-16): With the rivalry heating up now that the franchise is in Brooklyn, the Nets highly covet a victory over the Knicks to prevent losing the season series. “We’ve got to go in there with the mind-frame that we understand it’s going to be a hostile environment and some way, somehow we’ve got to come out of there on top,” guard Joe Johnson said. “They beat us the last two times and we owe them.” Point guard Deron Williams has made 47 consecutive free throws and forward Reggie Evans grabbed 20 rebounds in Friday’s 94-89 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Evans’ season-best is 23 rebounds.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (25-13): Explosive reserve J.R. Smith has been in a three-game funk since a splendid stretch in which he averaged 24 points over a 10-game stretch. Smith is just 13-of-43 shooting and averaging 12.3 points during the slump and scored just eight points in one of the games for his first single-digit outing since Dec. 2. Smith has been one of the top backups in the NBA all season with a 16.7 average. He is averaging 13.3 points in the three games against Brooklyn.

TRENDS:

* Under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings in New York.
* Nets are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six vs. NBA Atlantic foes.
* Knicks are 4-1 ATS in their last five games playing on three or more days of rest.
* Knicks are 4-1 ATS in their last five after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Anthony scored 31 points when the Knicks beat the Nets at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 19.

2. New York is 12-5 when C Tyson Chandler records a double-double.

3. Brooklyn is averaging 101.5 points in Carlesimo’s 12 games after averaging 94.5 in 28 games under Johnson.

Clippers at Warriors: What bettors need to know

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors (+3, 202)

The Golden State Warriors seemed to snap out of their funk, at least offensively, in a win over the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday. They will find out how far they still have to go by hosting the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The Warriors had dropped five of six before beating the Hornets - a stretch that began with a 26-point loss at the Clippers. Los Angeles has won four straight and got Chris Paul back on Saturday.

Golden State allowed the Hornets to shoot 57 percent - the highest shooting percentage for any losing team this season - in the 116-112 triumph on Saturday. The Warriors will need to come up with a better defensive effort against the Clippers, who average better than 100 points and are in the top five in the NBA in scoring defense. That combination has helped Los Angeles win 24 of its last 27 games and placed pressure on the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot in the Western Conference. The Clippers have struggled against the Warriors, however, dropping two of the first three meetings.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Comcast SportsNet Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (32-9): Paul missed three straight games with a bruised right kneecap but returned to the lineup on Saturday and collected 22 points and 11 assists in a 94-87 win over the Washington Wizards. Los Angeles suffered a 115-94 loss at Golden State on Jan. 2 but got some revenge three days later with a 115-89 home win over the Warriors. Paul went for 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting and added nine assists in the win as the Clippers shot 52.2 percent. Los Angeles has won three straight road games since falling at Golden State and will have to work to not look ahead with a showdown against the Thunder looming on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (24-15): Golden State was missing guard Stephen Curry for two games with an ankle injury but got him back on Saturday at New Orleans. The All-Star hopeful scored 20 points but struggled to 5-of-17 from the field in his return. Klay Thompson picked up the slack with a season-high 29 points and Jarrett Jack came through down the stretch and finished with 25 points and 12 assists. Just when the Warriors got Curry back, they lost their other All-Star hopeful David Lee to an ankle injury. Lee rolled the ankle at San Antonio on Friday and is day-to-day. Golden State had averaged 91.6 points while dropping five of six before breaking out against the Hornets. The defense still has plenty of holes. The front line was especially susceptible without Lee on Saturday, when the Hornets’ frontcourt combined to shoot 67 percent.

TRENDS:

* Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last six vs. Western Conference opponents.
* Warriors are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six vs. NBA Pacific opposition.
* Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Over is 4-0 in Warriors’ last 4 vs. NBA Pacific foes.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Paul has averaged 25.7 points and 8.3 assists in the three games against the Warriors this season.

2. Thompson had shot 31.8 percent in the three games prior to going 11-of-16 at New Orleans.

3. The winning team has scored at least 112 points in each of the last four meetings.

WINNING POINTS

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Monday, January 21

Syracuse* over Cincinnati by 6
What’s the deal with Syracuse’s second-leading scorer James Southerland?
Still suspended, or what?
SYRACUSE, 70-64

Baylor* over Oklahoma State by 11
Towson* over Georgia State by 7

**PREFERRED
Detroit* over Wright State by 21
The home side has good length, not much bulk, but enough length to give Wright
State problems. Oh, and there’s the 79 ppg they pump into the net per game, powered
by five double-digit scorers. Wright State’s little guard, 5’9” Reggie Arcenaux, scored
29 out of nowhere at Loyola-Chicago last week (he is their leading scorer averaging
only 10.8 ppg). Wright State is a well-drilled bunch of skinny kids playing a bigger foe
on the road on pretty short rest.
DETROIT, 78-57.

Notre Dame* over Georgetown by 8
Oklahoma* over Texas by 1

NBA BASKETBALL

Monday, January 21

*Memphis over Indiana by 2
Points should be very hard to come by in this matchup, so the underdog Pacers would
be worth a strong look despite ranking second to last in average points per game.
MEMPHIS 88-86.

*New Orleans over Sacramento by 6
The Hornets are rejuvenated with Eric Gordon back in the lineup. Laying mid-sized
points, though, with the Hornets is something difficult to recommend even with
Sacramento playing its third road game in four days.
NEW ORLEANS 99-93

Houston over *Charlotte by 7
It’s scary to think how many points the Rockets can put up against a defense-less
Bobcats squad that was surrendering around 104 points per game. Kemba Walker is
one of many slumping Bobcats, who don’t have nearly the offense to make up for their
startling lack of defense.
HOUSTON 113-106

**PREFERRED
Minnesota over *Atlanta by 2
The Hawks are talented but soft with a distinct lack of leadership. Al Horford is too
nice of a guy and Josh Smith remains a head case. The Hawks often are overpriced at
home where they were 6-13-1 ATS through this past Tuesday and 4-10-1 ATS when
hosting a foe with a losing road mark.
MINNESOTA 101-99

*New York over Brooklyn by 3
The Knicks were hot early, but are now going through a transition phase. Raymond
Felton is out thus forcing over-the-hill Jason Kidd to log extra minutes. The Knicks
also are adjusting to Amare Stoudemire being back, especially Carmelo Anthony on
the offensive end and Tyson Chandler on the defensive end.
NEW YORK 102-99

Los Angeles Clippers over *Golden State by 3
After losing twice to the Warriors, the Clippers got revenge with a 115-89 home win
over Golden State on Jan. 5. The impressive thing about that victory was the Clippers
had just beaten the Lakers the night before.
LA CLIPPERS 106-103

**PREFERRED
*Philadelphia over San Antonio by 5
The 76ers are much better than they’ve shown and have a strong revenge motive after
the Spurs buried them, 109-86, in San Antonio on Jan. 5 when Philadelphia was concluding an eight-game road swing. The 76ers have been home since Jan. 10 while the
Spurs are playing for the third time in four days. The Spurs have hit a dry spell failing
to cover in four of their last five through Jan. 12.
PHILADELPHIA 102-97.

*Chicago over Los Angeles Lakers by 3
The Lakers have been the single most disappointing team in the NBA. Despite Kobe
Bryant leading the league in scoring the Lakers were 14-21-1 ATS during their first 36
games.
CHICAGO 103-100

*Portland over Washington by 10
Washington owned a winning road spread mark through their first 15 away matchups,
but this marks the Wizards’ fourth road game in six days. Washington doesn’t have the
depth to take advantage of the Trail Blazers’ lack of bench production.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Atlanta Hawks Minnesota Timberwolves
+8-107 at 5dimes
15* NBA Monday Undervalued Underdog on Minnesota Timberwolves +8

The Minnesota Timberwolves are way undervalued right now due to their recent string of injuries to good players like Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic. However, what the betting public fails to realize is that this team is one of the deepest in the league, which allows it to overcome these injuries and remain competitive.

That was on display last time out as the Timberwolves made easy work of the Houston Rockets by a final of 92-79. They had six different players score in double figures in a complete team win. Andrei Kirilenko led the way with 21, followed by Luke Ridnour (16), Chris Johnson (15), Derrick Williams (11), Jose Barea (11) and Mickael Gelabale (11).

The Atlanta Hawks are playing their worst basketball of the season right now, which is why they should not be an 8-point favorite today. They are 2-8 SU & 3-7 ATS in their last ten games overall. That includes an embarrassing 58-97 loss at Chicago on January 14th. Atlanta also has injury issues of its own as Devin Harris and Deshawn Stevenson are questionable, while Lou Williams is out for the season.

This play falls into a system that is 23-3 (88.5%) ATS over the last 5 seasons. It tells us to bet against home favorites (ATLANTA) - cold team - having lost 6 or 7 of their last 8 games, extremely tired team - playing 9 or more games in 14 days. Roll with the Timberwolves Monday.

Houston Rockets vs Charlotte Bobcats Total
206½ ov-102 at 5dimes
15* NBA Monday Total DOMINATOR on Rockets/Bobcats OVER 206.5

The Houston Rockets are coming off a 79-92 loss at Minnesota, which has certainly influenced the oddsmakers heading into Monday's showdown with the Charlotte Bobcats. The Rockets shot a season-worst 32.1% in that game, and there's no question they'll turn it around and get their offense going today.

Houston is one of the highest-scoring teams in the league at 104.5 points/game. They play at the fastest tempo in the league, which is also a big reason why they give up a whopping 103.5 points/game.

Charlotte is not a great offensive team (95.0 PPG), but it will certainly get its offense going against this soft Houston defense. Also, the Bobcats are one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA as well. They give up 103.3 points/game on the season.

Houston is 50-27 to the OVER in road games after 3 or more consecutive losses since 1996. The OVER is 4-0 in Rockets last 4 games following a SU loss of more than 10 points. The OVER is 7-1 in Rockets last 8 vs. Eastern Conference foes. The OVER is 6-1 in Bobcats last 7 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400. Bet the OVER in this game Monday.

Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks Total
193½ un-102 at 5dimes
20* NBA Eastern Conference TOTAL OF THE MONTH on Nets/Knicks UNDER 193.5

The books have set the bar too high Sunday between the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks. This will be the 4th meeting of the season between these teams, so they are certainly familiar with one another. Familiarity usually breeds low-scoring games.

The first three meetings this year have seen 185 (OT), 197 and 186 combined points. They have combined to average 183.7 points/game (not counting overtime) in those three contests. That alone lets you know that there's at least 10 points of value with this UNDER.

Another big reason to back the UNDER is the fact that the Knicks are now a slow it down team without starting PG Raymond Felton, who is out with a finger injury. Their offense just doesn't run as smoothly without him out there running the pick and roll.

Brooklyn is 16-6 to the UNDER versus good offensive teams - scoring 99+ points/game over the last 2 seasons. The UNDER is 20-7 in Nets last 27 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The UNDER is 19-7-2 in Nets last 28 road games overall. The UNDER is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings in New York. Bet the UNDER in this game Monday.

San Antonio Spurs vs Philadelphia 76ers San Antonio Spurs
-6-110 at betus
15* Spurs/76ers TNT ATS ANNIHILATOR on San Antonio -6

The San Antonio Spurs are once again a covering machine this season. They are 32-11 SU & 25-17-1 ATS on the year and somehow they continue to go under the radar. Once again, they are undervalued as only a 6-point favorite over the lowly Philadelphia 76ers tonight.

The 76ers are really struggling of late, losing 14 of their last 19 games overall with 12 of those losses coming by 6 points or more. That includes recent losses to New Orleans (99-111), Toronto (72-90), Brooklyn (89-109), San Antonio (86-109) and Oklahoma City (85-109).

The Spurs have really had the 76ers' number in recent meetings. They have won three straight over Philadelphia all by 10 points or more. That includes their 109-86 home victory over the 76ers on January 5th earlier this month. San Antonio is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 meetings with Philadelphia.

The Spurs are 40-17-4 ATS in their last 61 games following a S.U. win. San Antonio is 34-15-3 ATS in its last 52 vs. Eastern Conference opponents. The Spurs are 41-19-2 ATS in their last 62 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. The 76ers are 8-21 ATS in their last 29 vs. Western Conference foes. Take the Spurs Monday.

CINCINNATI vs SYRACUSE CINCINNATI
+9-110 at betus
15* Cincinnati/Syracuse ESPN No-Brainer on Cincinnati +9

The Syracuse Orange are in a huge letdown spot Monday after a huge win at then-No. 1 Louisville by a final of 70-68 over the weekend. They will not have enough left in the tank to beat a very good Cincinnati team by double-digits today.

Cincinnati is off to a 16-3 start this season while posting three straight wins in conference play. Its three losses this season have come by a combined 8 points, which includes two 1-point defeats and a 6-point setback to Notre Dame.

What is most impressive about the Bearcats this year is the fact that they have played their best basketball on the road. They are a perfect 7-0 away from home this season, which includes road wins over Iowa State, Oregon, Xavier, Pitt, Rutgers and DePaul. They won't be intimidated by the Carrier Dome one bit.

Cincinnati is 10-0 ATS in road games after playing a game as a home favorite over the last 2 seasons. The Bearcats are 8-0 ATS in road games off a home win over the last 2 seasons. Cincinnati is 6-0 ATS after failing to cover 4 of their last 5 against the spread over the last 3 seasons. Syracuse is 0-6 ATS vs. dominant rebounding teams - outrebounding opponents by 7+ per game over the last 2 seasons. These four tends combine for a perfect 30-0 system backing the Bearcats. Take Cincinnati Monday.

David Banks on Martin Luther King Day .... Monday, January 21st, 2013

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Chicago Bulls

In the nightcap of a special Martin Luther King Day NBA on TNT doubleheader on Monday night, the disappointing Los Angeles Lakers (17-22, 16-22-1 ATS) travel east to take on the Chicago Bulls (23-16, 15-24 ATS) at the United Center in Chicago at 9:35 ET. The Lakers are playing the second half of a back-to-back after facing the Toronto Raptors in Canada on Sunday afternoon, while the Bulls are coming off of yet another home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

The Bulls' unorthodox home/away splits remain a mystery, as Chicago has one of the best road records in the NBA at 12-5, but it is now 11-11 here in its own building. One thing that has been constant about the Bulls home and away though has been defense, as they are third in the NBA in points allowed at just 91.7 per game and fourth in field goal percentage against at 42.9 percent. That scoring average drops to a microscopic 89.1 points here at home, but that has resulted in less wins that it should have because, for whatever reason, Chicago cannot score in its own building this year. Sure, the Bulls have trouble scoring anywhere as they rank 25th in points scored with 93.8 per game overall, but while most teams shoot better at home, the Bulls are only averaging 91.5 points here on 42.4 percent shooting. That combined scoring average of only 180.6 points has allowed the 'under' to go a lucrative 16-6 in all Chicago home games this season, and Saturday's loss to the Grizzlies was a microcosm for how the season has gone in the Windy City as the final score was 85-82in overtime!

Many experts were predicting that the Lakers would just cruise to the NBA Finals this season with new additions Dwight Howard and Steve Nash joining Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, but a combination of a lack of chemistry on the court and some injuries have the Lake Show at five games under .500. The Big Four are all back now although Gasol came off the bench vs. the Miami Heat Friday in his first game back following a concussion. The Lakers are on a 5-0 'under' streak of their own as they held their opponents to 44.6 percent shooting in those five games including 29.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Yes, Los Angeles is still allowing 101.4 points per game overall, but at least the Lakers seem to be making a concerted effort to improve that recently, and besides, the Bulls may not be equipped to take advantage if the Laker defense that was present before the last five games resurfaces given the way Chicago shoots the ball at home.

The 'under' is an amazing 46-19-2 in the last 67 Lakers' non-conference games and 6-0 in the last six Laker games vs. the Central Division. The 'under' is also 22-8 in the last 30 Chicago home games.
Pick: UNDER 194.5

3-Unit Play. #731 Take Loyola Maryland +4.5 over Fairfield (Monday @ 7 pm est)
We had a play on Loyola the last time they went on the road in league play and just came up short with them against Rider. Here they get themselves (and us) back into the win column. Bottom line is that these are two MAAC programs going in opposite directions. Loyola sits in the upper tier of the league and is still very much in striking distance of the top spot. Fairfield, however, is just 2-5 and fading fast at 10-9 overall on the season. The Stags are 0-4 ATS the their last four conference tilts, all being losses in the standings as well. The Greyhounds were a similar priced favorite when they hosted the first meeting. I think oddsmakers got lazy here and didn't give this line much thought. I think Loyola wins this game and continues to push towards something substantial in the league. Go with them and the points over Fairfield.
Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball
3-Unit Play. Take #715 Under 194.5 Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago (9:35 p.m., Monday January 21 TNT)

So after the Raptors bat the LA Lakers on Sunday Kobe Bryant tells the media that his legs are tired and that is why his shot is short. If Kobe can't score at will against the Raptors defense what is he going to do tonight against the Bulls defense. When these two teams meet the under is the best bet on the board and I thought the oddsmakers would have this lay around 193.5 or 194. Before Sunday's game with Toronto the Lakers were holding opponents to under 100 points and tonight in Chicago I see both teams playing great defense and both teams will not score 100 points. Tonight the Bulls defense will give the Lakers huge problems and this game stay under the total.
Indian Cowboy's Picks For NHL Hockey
3-Unit Play. #11 Take Detroit Red Wings -130 vs. Columbus (Monday @ 7:35 p.m. est.)
One look around inside Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio and it might be a bit confusing on which team is the home team. The Red Wings are one of the best draws for Blue Jacket home games and a special two for one promotion assures that Columbus will have a sell-out for their home opener. Problem is the majority of fans will be wearing the colors of the ?Boys from Hockey Town?. Todd Richards, who returns for his first full season as coach of the Blue Jackets after replacing Scott Arniel last January has a huge rebuilding project underway in the Capitol of Ohio. The Rick Nash saga finally came to an end with his trade to the New York Rangers this off-season. Columbus still lacks impact performers, and Nash's departure can't help in that regard as the Blue Jackets will start the season with no (30) goal scorers on its roster. Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock and his team are looking for a big bounce-back after getting roughed up in their season opener by St. Louis Saturday night. For the first time in (20) seasons, the Red Wings try to win without Lidstrom. They have the pieces in place to remain a Stanley Cup contender, to make the playoffs for the (22nd) straight season. The Red Wings' high-end talent up front includes Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppua as all return to lead a talented group of forwards. It seems unlikely Detroit's offense can be kept silent as it was in St. Louis for long. The Red Wings are (53-19-1) in the last (73) meetings and look for them to continue their dominance in this series.

Robert Ferringo's Picks For NHL Hockey

1-Unit Pick Take #6 Nashville (-1.05) over St.Louis (6pm, Monday, January 21)
The Blues head into Nashville after shutting out the Red Wings on Saturday 6-0 in front of a packed house, Nashville on the other hand started their season on a different note losing at home to what is expected to be a struggling Columbus team. Nashville was shut down by Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky who turned away 31 shots and forced overtime before Columbus downed Nashville. Not only does the Blues win look in impressive but the fact that they held Detroit to 14 shots would tell me that the turnover that Detroit is going through played a part in that game. I know that St. Louis is a good hockey and most likely will be a top three team in the west. I think we will see a
different Nashville team tonight, while everybody is on the same path with a hectic schedule to start the season I do think Nashville is a much better hockey club that played the other night. The opening number here had Nashville as a -1.15 home chalk with the early money shifting this number to the Blues. I think we have some value here in a Nashville team that should bounce back.

That's it for today, thanks and good luck

3 Unit Play. Take #710 New York - 3 ½ over Brooklyn (12:35 p.m., Monday, January 21)
Melo had a big game against the Nets last month in the Garden scoring 31 points and today I see Melo and the Knicks having a big game. The Nets have been playing good ball winning 8 out of their last 10 games but again this matchup is in the hear of New York and I don't see the Nets winning this road game. New York is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games and the Nets are 1-4 ATS against Atlantic division teams.

2 Unit Play. Take #715 LA Lakers +1 ½ over Chicago (9:35 p.m., Monday, January 21 TNT)
Yes I watched the Lakers game yesterday which the Raptors beat LA 108-103. Dwight Howard got to watch this game in the locker room because got 2-techs in the first half so tonight Dwight should be fresh. The Bulls are a horrible home team this year going 11-11 and in ny eyes the Bulls play much better on the road. This game should be close and I see Kobe taking over in the 2nd half and I see Pau Gasol being the huge factor tonight in this rare Lakers won win.

3 Unit Play. Take 2511 Detroit -125 over Columbus (7:35 p.m., Monday January 21)
The Detroit Red Wings will look to bounce back from an embarrassing 6-0 opening night loss to the Blues when they travel to take on the Blue Jackets tonight in Columbus. Detroit was outplayed in both ends of the rink on Saturday but they are a much better team that what they showed. They could not get anything going on the offensive end and gave up 4 power plays goals to St Louis. Detroit is the better team here this evening and we expect them to have the jump on Columbus from the drop of the puck. They took 4 of 6 from the Jackets last year and have won 6 of their last 8 games played on a Monday dating back to last season. Columbus has actually struggled a bit in the spot they are in here, losing 25 of 33 games following a win and have posted just a 14-39 record in their last 52 games against teams from the Central Division. We'll look for more of the same tonight and lay the small road price with the Wings to give us back to back winning nights in the NHL.
2 Unit Play. Take 2513 Anaheim -110 over Calgary (9:05 p.m., Monday January 21)
The Anaheim Ducks will look for back to back win to open the season tonight when they continue their road trip in Calgary to take on the Flames. The Ducks will also be looking to keep up the offensive firepower that netted 7 goals in Saturday's opening night win over the Vancouver Canucks. Calgary did not fare so well in their season opener, losing to the Sharks 4-1 last night and will be a step slower than the Ducks tonight as they are playing on back to back nights. The Ducks have been very good in the spot they are in here tonight against the Flames. winning 31 of their last 41 games played on a Monday and have an excellent 4-0 record after scoring 5 goals or more in their previous contest. The Flames, who have been bad for a while now have really struggled in the situation they find themselves in here with Anaheim. They are just 3-9 in their last 12 games against teams from the Western Conference and have won just 16 of their last 53 games when playing in the second of a back to back over the last few seasons. Pair that with the fact that the Ducks are 6-2 in their last 8 games against the Flames and we'll take the better team here on the road at a pick em' price to get the job done and bring us home another easy winner.

9:30 PM -- Lloyd Noble Center
OKLAHOMA (12-4) -7 ½ over Texas (8-9) Prediction: Oklahoma by 12-13 Played at Lloyd Noble Center (12,000) in Norman, Oklahoma Starting Time: 9:35 TV: ESPN Comments: The Sooners are much better than their record and return to their comfort zone—the Noble Center where they are 6-1 this season, with only a one-point, 56-55, loss to a much-underrated 16-1 Stephen F. Austin team tainting their home record. Thus, for openers, we have a strong home-court bias working for us with Oklahoma but that is just part of this handicapping equation. Oklahoma comes into this game off a 69-60 loss at 16th-ranked Kansas State (15-2) and is in positive bounce-back form. Texas, which has lost its last four games and five of its last six, also is in bounce-back form, but lacks the one element to pull it off—the ability to do so. There are two parts to the bounce-back equation—(1) to be in that mode and (2) to have the talent to get it done and my figures say the Longhorns lack the latter. Oklahoma is a talented, well-coached team that meets both requirements and, combined with its home court bias, should return to the win column.

TOWSON (10-9) -6 over Georgia State (8-11) Prediction: Towson by 10-11 Played at Towson Center Arena (5,250) in Towson, Maryland Starting Time: 7:00 No TV Comments: Towson and Wichita State are the two most surprising teams of this basketball season and it is quite an under-statement to say both have exceeded expectations. Towson went 1-31 last season and Wichita State (17-2) lost its top five scorers off last year’s NCAA team and was expected to struggle through a rebuilding year. Welcome to the real world, where reality always trumps perception. Second-year Towson coach Pat Skerry has used newcomers and three key transfer players to make the Tigers legitimate and they should win their third straight and their sixth game in their last seven outings tonight. Georgia State won’t play dead but the Panthers have no answer for one of the best basketball players in the country—Georgetown transfer Jerrelle Benimon, a 6-8 junior forward who leads the NCAA in double-doubles this season with 13 and comes into this game averaging 16.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for Towson.

Larry Ness' 10* Conferrence G.O.M.-CBB (21-10 CBB 10*s s/Dec 14)
My 10* Big-12 Game of the Month is on Oklahoma at 9:30 ET.
Rick Barnes earned his chops with stops in Providence (three NCAAs in six seasons) and Clemson (three NCAA trips in four seasons) before landing in Texas for the start of the 1998-99 season. Barnes entered this season having led the Longhorns to 14 straight NCAA appearances, including the Final Four in 2003, two other Elite 8 appearances and two more Sweet 16 trips. However, as Texas visits Norman, Oklahoma tonight, the Longhorns will need to somehow stop their steady descent to the bottom of the Big 12 standings. Texas was 8-5 in non-conference play but has opened 0-4 start in conference play for the first time since 1997-98, the year prior to coach Rick Barnes’ arrival. Texas began the season hopeful that sophomore PG Kabongo (9.6-3.0-5.2) would be ruled eligible but that never happened. The team’s low-scoring offense is mostly to blame for the Longhorns’ struggles this season, as Texas’ 63.8 scoring average is nearly nine points lower than last season. The defense ranks second in the nation in field goal percentage defense (34.5%) and first in three-point field goal percentage defense (24.8%) but it hasn’t helped much, especially away from Austin. Texas is 0-4 SU on the road and that includes an 86-73 loss at Chaminade (as 16 1/2-point favorites) in November. In four neutral-site contests, Texas is 1-3, averaging a pathetic 56.5 PPG. While Texas is seemingly headed ‘nowhere,’ the Sooners are having a bounce-back season. Lon ****** is in his second year at Oklahoma and went a modest 15-16 in his first year. However, ******’s a proven winner with stops at Kansas St, Florida, Illinois and UNLV. His Sooners are 12-4 to open the 2012-13 season, after losing their first Big 12 game this season Saturday at Kansas St (69-60). The Sooners own excellent size inside with the 6-8 Osby (13.6-6.4), who leads the team in scoring and rebounding, plus is joined by 6-9 Wyoming transfer M’Baye (9.9-5.6) and the 6-8 Fitzgerald (5.9-2.6). Senior guard Pledger (11.4-3.3) anchors a backcourt which features three freshman, Hield (9.3-4.9), Hornbeak (5.9)and Cousins (2.9) plus 6-6 junior swingman Clark (6.3-3.1). Texas’ top-six players are all freshman and sophomores. The backcourt features sophomores McClellan (11.8-3.4) and Lewis (11.8-3.4) plus freshman PG Felix (9.2-3.8-6.2). In the frontcourt, it’s 6-7 sophomore Holmes (8.1-7.4) plus two more freshman, the 6-8 Papapetrou (6.7-4.4) and Ridley (5.1-5.2). Oklahoma lost Saturday but let me point out that the Sooners out-rebounded Oklahoma by 14 (second-largest margin of the season), a figure made more impressive since the Wildcats entered the game as the conference’s leader in the category. However, Oklahoma committed twice as many turnovers (16) as the Wildcats, leading to a 26-6 disadvantage in points off miscues. Here in Norman (note: Oklahoma’s seven home games are tied for the fewest of any “power-six” conference team), the Sooners are 6-1 SU and 4-0 ATS, outscoring opponents 73.3-to-58.3 PPG. Texas’ woes continue, after the Longhorns gave an all-out effort in losing at home to Kansas 64-59 and have little left here for the Sooners. Lay it.
