Australian Open: Murray slight favorite over Federer

Roger Federer (+132) vs. Andy Murray (-147)

In the most anticipated matchup of the men's draw thus far, Roger Federer takes on Andy Murray. Each of these two players won a major in 2012 and is looking to claim a spot in the final in the first major championship of 2013.

The head-to-head in this matchup is very tight with Murray holding a 10-9 advantage, most notably in 2012 Federer beat Murray in the Wimbledon final, while Murray beat the Swiss Legend in the gold medal match at the Olympics. Interestingly, nine of their last 11 matches have finished in straight sets. Of their best-of-five sets matches, only one of the four matches was not won in straight sets.

Federer did have a scare against Tsonga in the quarterfinals, while Murray hasn't even been to a tiebreak this tournament. Murray has the momentum, but he has yet to beat Federer at a major. Is tonight his night?

Seven NBA Betting Trends to Consider

We rummaged through our stats to uncover some interesting NBA trends to assist you with your capping of the hard court.

Washington Wizards

The Wizards are currently the hottest bet in the Association with an eight-game cover streak. Washington covered Wednesday night at Utah and hosts Minnesota Friday night.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors have put together a string of four consecutive covers. What makes the run more impressive is three of those covers were against top-notch opponents (Spurs, Clippers, Thunder). Golden State visits Chicago Friday.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavs are currently the best bet in the West, covering in seven straight games. They host the high-powered Spurs Friday.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets blew another cover Wednesday night in a loss to Denver. Houston has failed to cover in nine straight games heading into Friday’s date with the Hornets in New Orleans.

Nets at Grizzlies: What Bettors Need to Know

Brooklyn Nets at Memphis Grizzlies (-4.5, 177.5)

The Memphis Grizzlies have bounced back from a three-game skid by winning three of the past four games. More importantly for the Grizzlies is the way they have tightened up defensively after allowing an average of 102 points during the losing streak. That defense will be tested when the red-hot Brooklyn Nets pay a visit to Memphis on Friday night. The Grizzlies are second to Indiana in points allowed at 89.5 and have surrendered an average of only 81.5 points in the last four. The only loss in the span was an 82-81 setback to the Pacers.

The Nets have won three straight and 10 of 11 following Wednesday's 91-83 victory at Minnesota. Brooklyn's defense hasn't been too shabby either, permitting only 85.7 points during the three-game win streak. The Nets are 12-2 since assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo was promoted to replace the fired Avery Johnson. The hot spell has propelled the team within one game of the New York Knicks for the lead in the Atlantic Division. The Grizzles and Nets have split the past 10 meetings.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), SportSouth (Memphis)

ABOUT THE NETS (26-16, 20-19-3 ATS): A broken foot cost center Brook Lopez all but five games last season - and may have prevented him from being dealt to Orlando for Dwight Howard. Lopez is doing his best to make sure Brooklyn has no misgivings about failing to make the trade. The 7-footer scored a team-high 22 points against Minnesota, giving him four 20-point outings in his last five games. Lopez is averaging 20 points and 8.5 rebounds in the past five games, and his shooting percentage (52.1) is his highest since his 2008-09 rookie campaign (53.1)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (27-14, 24-16-1 ATS): Defense isn't the only area where Memphis made huge strides. After being held to 85 points or fewer in six consecutive games, the Grizzlies broke out of their doldrums in a 106-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. The offensive eruption came 24 hours after the team dealt away reserves Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington and Josh Selby in a salary-dump trade. Reserve forward Darrell Arthur wasted no time capitalizing on the additional playing time by scoring a season-high 20 points.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Nets are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Memphis.
* Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Memphis.
* Nets are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph, who leads the NBA with 27 double-doubles, was named to the Western Conference All-Star team on Thursday.

2. After losing its final four road games in December, Brooklyn is 5-1 away from home this month.

3. The magic number for Memphis is 100. The team is 12-0 when scoring in triple digits.

Game: San Antonio at Dallas (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: San Antonio -1.5 (-110)
Things have picked up for the Dallas Mavericks now that Dirk Nowitzki has his sea-legs back under him. The Mavericks have won five of their last six. The problem is that they are facing a better San Antonio team that is even hotter than they are, having put their last six in the win column and stand at 34-11 on the season. The Spurs may be doing it differently from the past, as they can still man-up on "D," but the offense is much better, and despite the absence of Tim Duncan there are a lot of answers on the floor. The Spurs own a 40-19-4 ATS mark following a win, and the Mavs have had few answers against them, as San Antonio is 8-1 ATS in their last nine vs. Dallas. Take San Antonio.

Brooklyn at Memphis (Fri): Both teams are on the rise in the respective conferences and start the week with solid winning records. Brooklyn had a 7 game winning streak snapped in Atlanta last week but turned right around and defeated the Hawks two nights later.

Both teams are currently on the “play on” list which often suggests a look first to the underdog. With their outright road win at Oklahoma City earlier this month the Nets have the confidence to play well in this spot which, when combined with their current form, make them attractive as a road underdog of likely from 5 to 7 points. BROOKLYN.

7:35p Detroit Pistons vs Miami Heat
Take: Miami Heat -9½-103 in 5h
15* NBA Friday No-Doubt Rout on Miami Heat -9.5

The Miami Heat will roll by double-digits tonight over the Detroit Pistons. After a five-day layoff, they were a little rusty against an underrated Toronto team on Wednesday, needing overtime to win 123-116.

Now that the Heat have shaken off the rust, they will turn their attention to a Pistons team that actually beat them 109-99 in their most recent meeting in Detroit on December 28th. Miami will certainly want revenge from that defeat while getting back to its domination in this series.

Miami has won seven of its last eight meetings with Detroit. Four of those seven wins came by 14 points or more, including a 98-75 victory in their most recent home meeting on April 8th, 2012.

The Heat are 17-3 at home this season, outscoring opponents by an average of 10.1 points/game. The Pistons are 4-16 on the road this season, scoring a mere 92.5 points/game away from home.

Detroit is 0-7 ATS after a game where both teams scored 90 points or less this season. The Pistons are 8-18 ATS in their last 26 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The Heat are 19-8-1 ATS in their last 28 meetings with the Pistons. The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings. Roll with the Heat Friday.

8:05p Brooklyn Nets vs Memphis Grizzlies
Take: Memphis Grizzlies -4-107 in 6h
20* NBA Non-Conference KNOCKOUT on Memphis Grizzlies -4

The Memphis Grizzlies are showing excellent value as only a 4-point home favorite over the Brooklyn Nets tonight. I'll gladly take advantage and back the Grizz in this spot as I fully expect a blowout by game's end.

Brooklyn is getting way too much respect from oddsmakers right now due to winning 10 of its last 11 games overall. However, must of those wins have come against weak competition with the likes of the Wizards, Kings, 76ers, Suns, Raptors and Timberwolves mixed in. The schedule finally gets tougher starting tonight.

Memphis remains one of the most underrated teams in the league this season. That's evident by the fact that it is 27-14 SU and an incredible 24-15-2 ATS on the year. The Grizzlies are 16-6 at home this season, giving up just 87.0 points/game. The Nets are a mediocre 10-9 on the road.

The Grizzlies are 24-8 ATS in their last 32 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Memphis is 47-22-3 ATS in its last 72 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Grizzlies are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 games following a SU win of more than 10 points. Bet Memphis Friday.

8:05p Houston Rockets vs New Orleans Hornets
Take: New Orleans Hornets -2½-103 in 6h
15* NBA Western Conference ANNIHILATOR on New Orleans Hornets -2.5

The New Orleans Hornets are one of the most underrated teams in the league right now. I have been riding them with a ton of success lately, and I'll continue backing them at a great price tonight as only a 2.5-point home favorite over the Houston Rockets.

New Orleans is 7-3 SU and a sensational 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games overall. It has beaten the likes of San Antonio and Houston at home, while also topping Dallas and Boston on the road during this stretch. This team is much better than its 14-28 record would indicate due to the recent return of G Eric Gordon.

Houston is stuck in a free-fall right now, yet it is still getting treated like one of the better teams in the West. That certainly isn't the case as the Rockets are 1-8 SU & 0-9 ATS in their last 9 games overall. Both James Harden and Jeremy Lin have been asked to do too much for this team, and as a result each is starting to wear down.

Home-court advantage has been huge in this series to say the least. The home team has won each of the last seven meetings in this series dating back to 2011. The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings. The Rockets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 meetings in New Orleans.

The Rockets are 0-9 ATS in their last 9 games overall. Houston is 0-6 ATS in its last 6 after allowing 100 or more points in its previous game. The Rockets are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. Houston is 0-7 ATS in its last 7 road games. The Rockets are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest. The Hornets are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game. New Orleans is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 vs. division opponents. These seven trends combine for a perfect 40-0 system backing New Orleans. Take the Hornets Friday.

4-STAR Houston over NEW ORLEANS - All runs come to an end eventually. Good and bad. The Rockets have failed to cover in nine straight games, winning just one of those straight up, and bettors are jumping ship. This is where you want to pick up the pieces and grab the value on them here.
ATS streaks this long get into somewhat rare territory and it has traditionally been a good idea to play on the team. Teams which failed to cover in at least 9 straight games are 26-16 ATS.
Houston's last loss came Wednesday, 105-95 against Denver. Committing 22 turnovers killed them in that game. The Rockets are 8-0 ATS (10.6 ppg) since January 21, 1998 on the road with at most one day of rest after a home loss in which they had at least five more turnovers than their season-to-date average. Also, the Rockets are 7-0 ATS (5.5 ppg) since December 25, 1997 on the road after a double digit home loss in which they committed at least twenty turnovers.
New Orleans meanwhile fought hard in a 106-102 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday. The Hornets are 0-5 ATS (-9.2 ppg) since November 16, 2012 at home after a loss on the road.
They lost despite the Spurs shooting just 12-of-23 at the foul line. The Hornets are 0-6 ATS (-11.4 ppg) since April 05, 1996 at home with at most one day of rest after a road loss in which their opponent shot less than 60% from the free-throw line.
SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: Houston 98, NEW ORLEANS 90
4-STAR WASHINGTON over Minnesota - When you are dealing with two bad teams, recent play can be important. The Wizards have been fighting hard recently and have won or been close in eight straight games. Minnesota meanwhile has lost seven of eight and hasn't been within seven points in any of those losses. Look for the Wizards to get another W here over this banged up team.
On Wednesday, Minnesota lost to Brooklyn, 91-83. A huge problem in that game was getting to the foul line just six times and making only four. Teams which attempted 6 or fewer free throws last game are 37-65 ATS.
That also stems a team-specific problem for Minnesota in their next game. The Timberwolves are 0-6 ATS (-15.3 ppg) since 2008 following a game where they attempted no more than 10 and made fewer than nine free throws.
Washington meanwhile lost in Utah 92-88 Wednesday. They fought back from a big deficit to make that one a game. The Wizards are 6-0 ATS (5.6 ppg) since December 01, 2007 with at most one day of rest off a loss of four points or fewer on the road in which they trailed by double digits.
Nene really hurt them in that game going 3-of-14 from the field with just nine points. The Wizards are 6-0 ATS (8.2 ppg) since March 29, 2012 after a loss in which Nene scored fewer than 10 points.
Jordan Crawford also had nine points playing 23 minutes off the bench. The Wizards are 5-0 ATS (8.4 ppg) since November 28, 2012 at home after a loss in which Jordan Crawford played fewer than 30 minutes. SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: WASHINGTON 104, Minnesota 92

3 Unit Play. Take #820 Under 206 Utah at LA Lakers (10:35 p.m., Friday, January 25)

5 Unit Play. Take 2504 Buffalo -145 over Carolina (7:05 p.m., Friday January 25)
The Buffalo Sabres will look to split their home and home with the Carolina Hurricanes when the two teams meet again tonight in Buffalo. The Sabres defeated Philadelphia and Toronto by a combined scored of 7-3 in their two wins before losing last night behind backup goalie Jonas Enroth while the struggling Hurricanes were outscored 9-2 by Florida and Tampa Bay to start the season 0-2 before getting the win at home last night. Ryan Miller will get the call between the pipes for the Sabres after getting the night off last night. Miller has been excellent in his two starts this season, stopping 34 of 35 shots in the win over Toronto and has posted a 1.50 GAA on the season. Miller will be opposed by Cam Ward, who is scheduled to be in goal tonight for Carolina in the second of the back to back. Ward has been absolutely awful in his three starts this season, getting yanked after giving up 4 first period goals to Florida on opening night and then giving up 4 more goals on just 26 shots against in the team's loss to Tampa. Ward also allowed 3 goals on 30 shots in the win over Buffalo last night. He will need to turn things around in this short season if Carolina has any thoughts of playing in the postseason. The Sabres have been excellent in the spot they are in here tonight against Carolina, winning 6 of their last 8 games against teams with a losing record and have posted a 9-2 record in their last 11 games on home ice dating back to last season. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, have really struggled in the situation they are in here this evening. They are just 6-21 when playing in the second game of a back to back and have lost 5 of their last 8 games against teams from the Eastern Conference. Pair that with the fact that the Sabres have a 9-4 record against Carolina in their last 13 games between the two teams in Buffalo and we'll lay the price with the Sabres at home tonight to get the win and get us back on track on the frozen pond.
