Beware NBA Teams Looking Ahead to All-Star Break
by Jason Logan

The NBA All-Star break puts the regular season on hold for four days as the best and brightest in the league are showcased.

This brief hiatus is a blessing to some teams and a burden for others. Teams with injury concerns or clubs stuck in a losing rut can sometimes get caught looking ahead to the break while squads building momentum see the four-day layoff as a nasty speed bump.

Here are three clubs who could lose focus as we head toward the All-Star Weekend on Feb. 15.

Los Angeles Clippers (35-16 SU, 28-23 ATS)
Los Angeles was able to snap a three-game skid with a win over lowly Orlando Wednesday despite having Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Jamal Crawford and Chauncey Billups out with injuries.

The short-handed Clippers wrap up an eight-game road trip next week then host the Rockets and play the Lakers for Staples Center bragging rights just before the break. With a young core of players, and Griffin and Paul headed to the All-Star Game, it will be up to the veterans to keep this club focused in the coming week.

Brooklyn Nets (29-20 SU, 22-24-3 ATS)
Consistency has been the Nets’ biggest battle in their inaugural season in Brooklyn. They’ve gone 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games and haven’t been able to find the momentum that sparked an 11-4 start to the year. The coaching change from Avery Johnson to P.J. Carlesimo has played its part in that as well as not having star PG Deron Williams at full strength.

Williams is averaging just under 12 points over the last four games (16.7 ppg on the season) and isn’t taking part in the All-Star festivities, giving him a chance to heal up. The break will be a reset for Brooklyn before the playoff push begins. The Nets' pre-ASG sked has them at Washington, home to San Antonio, at Indiana, and hosting Denver.

Chicago Bulls (29-19 SU, 20-28 ATS)
The Bulls have been waiting for this All-Star break since being eliminated from the playoffs last season. Chicago is not only looking forward to resting its thinning roster - Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah, Marco Belinelli, Kirk Hinrich are all nursing ailments – but the break gets the Bulls closer to the return of PG Derrick Rose. Rose is expected to return this month and would give Chicago a huge lift in the second half of the schedule.

The Bulls have battled to stay above water, leaning on defense to keep pace in the East. Chicago takes on three Western foes - at Denver, at Utah, vs. San Antonio - before visiting Boston before the break. The Bulls are 6-10 SU and 4-12 ATS versus Western Conference teams this season.

See Spot. See Spot bet: This Week's Best Spot Bet Opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead Spot

The Los Angeles Lakers are fighting for their season on their current seven-game road swing, taking a 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS) record into Thursday’s stop in Boston – Game No. 5 on the annual “Grammy” trip. The Lakers actually find themselves in the rare “Lookahead Letdown” spot Friday, when they visit the lowly Charlotte Bobcats.

Los Angeles will be coming off a heated rivalry game with the Celtics and looking ahead to Sunday’s clash with the Miami Heat when they face the Bobcats. An aging roster and injuries to bigs Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol may have L.A. more focused on resting up for Miami.

Letdown Spot

The ACC is one of the tightest conferences in college hoops, with five teams in the hunt for the conference crown. Two of those programs are North Carolina State and Duke, which collide in Cameron Indoor Stadium Thursday night. The Wolfpack knocked off the Blue Devils at home back in January but haven’t won in Durham since 2007.

Following that showdown, NC State pays a visit to J.C. Littlejohn Coliseum to face the Clemson Tigers. Clemson may not be in the thick of the ACC race but the Tigers took the fight to the Wolfpack in their first meeting of the year, covering as 8.5-point road underdogs in a 66-62 loss on Jan. 20. NC State guard Lorenzo Brown is still a question mark this week (ankle).

Scheduling Spot

The Anaheim Ducks open a six-game road trip in Colorado Wednesday – not the best place to start an extended away swing due to the change in altitude from Anaheim to the Pepsi Center. The Ducks play three games in four nights, moving to Dallas and St. Louis Friday and Saturday before catching their breath for a few days.

Anaheim is back on the road in Chicago Tuesday, in Detroit Friday and closes this tough stretch of schedule at Nashville on Feb. 16. The Ducks have built a solid 6-1-0-1 record thanks to a home-heavy sked, playing five of those games inside the Honda Center. They’ve scored a franchise-record 29 goals in their first eight games but struggled to find the net in the role of visitors last season, averaging only 2.07 goals per road game – second worst in the NHL.

Clippers Getting Healthy Just in Time for Showdown with Heat

The Los Angeles Clippers had all of their players in uniform and practicing Thursday for the first time this season, and could potentially have a full roster playing against the Miami Heat Friday night.

Forward Blake Griffin, who has sat out the past two games because of a strained hamstring, went through a light practice as did guard Jamal Crawford, who missed Wednesday night's tilt with a sore right shoulder.

Guards Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups also practiced together for the first time in over two months. Paul has missed nine consecutive games with a bruised right kneecap while Billups has only suited up in three games this season due to tendinitis in his left foot.

All four players are officially listed as game-time decisions Friday.

Heat F Chris Bosh has been battling the flu and is considered day-to-day.

The Clippers are just 3-7 SU (3-7 ATS) in their last 10 games and oddsmakers are suggesting a spread of Heat -6 with a 196 total for Friday night’s game.

Rockets Keep Topping Sky-High NBA Totals

The Houston Rockets have one of the most suitable team names in all of sports. Houston, home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, has been launching up shots and shooting for the moon all season.

The Rockets top the league in offensive pace (98.8 possessions per game), rank second in scoring (105.8 ppg), sit eighth in field goal percentage (45.9%) and caught the eye of NBA totals bettors with a record-tying display from beyond the arc this week.

Houston knocked down 23 3-pointers in a win over Golden State (23 of 40) Tuesday, playing over the 217-point number. In fact, the Rockets have topped the total in three of their last four outings and own a 28-23 over/under record heading into Friday’s tilt with Portland.

“Houston’s totals just creep up more than others after initial release on the day,” Aron Black of Bet365. “The inconsistency of their performances have made for good results, given we are normally weighed on the overs for their games.”

The Rockets have watched their game totals rise as the season has progressed. Over the last 10 games, Houston has been matched up against an average total of 208.7 points and hasn’t faced a sub-200 number since Jan. 18 (played over total of 195 at Indiana).

Part of those hefty totals has to do with Houston’s inability to stop foes on defense, giving up an average of 102.9 points a night. They were rolled by Miami Wednesday, losing 114-108 (playing over 206.5) and allowed the Heat to shoot 48.8 percent from the field. The Rockets are 27-24 SU and 27-23-1 ATS on the year.

“Houston will entertain some nights like (Tuesday) night, but so far, that’s about all they do,” says Black.

Oddsmakers have suggested a total of 207 points for Friday’s game versus the Trail Blazers. The Rockets are suggested 6.5-point home favorites.

Only one game on the board tomorrow in hockey, but we think this line is going to move the wrong way all day tomorrow.

We may send out the PL in this game some time tomorrow, but let's lock in this play right now.

Ducks ML -110 *1 Unit*
The Ducks have been playing amazing hockey, and any time we can get them at a PK price right now we are going to be looking into it. Dallas will be playing their 12th game of the season already. Most of their wins have come from some easy teams, the Ducks are no easy team. The Ducks are 7-2 ATS this year - with 4 of their 7 wins by 2 or more goals.

Clippers at Heat: What Bettors Need to Know

Los Angeles Clippers at Miami Heat (-6, 196)

It looks like a potential NBA Finals matchup on paper - and key players should be back in the fold on both sides of Friday's game between the Los Angeles Clippers and host Miami Heat. The Clippers were without superstars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul for Wednesday's 86-76 win over Orlando, though both practiced Thursday and hope to return. Miami is coming off a win over Houston that came without the services of Chris Bosh, who sat out due to illness but should be back Friday.

The Clippers will need all hands on deck if they hope to challenge the home dominance of the East-leading Heat. Miami is 20-3 on its home court this season, even with the Indiana Pacers for the best home mark in the conference. Improving that mark becomes more difficult if Paul returns from a knee injury that has knocked him out of 12 of the last 14 games. Griffin sat out Wednesday with a lingering hamstring injury, his second absence in a row after playing in the previous 197 straight games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Sun Sports (Miami)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (35-16, 28-23-0 ATS): Practice felt busier than ever Thursday, with Paul, Griffin, Chauncey Billups (left foot) and Jamal Crawford (right shoulder) all back in action. Griffin and Billups are listed as day-to-day and are expected to be in the lineup, while the statuses of Paul and Crawford remain up in the air. Billups, who has only played in three games this season, said he wants to see how he feels following Friday's shootaround before deciding on his status. "Hopefully I wake up [Friday] and I feel great and it's a go. But I have to wait and see how the recovery goes," he told the Los Angeles Times.

ABOUT THE HEAT (32-14, 22-24-0 ATS): After LeBron James finally won his first NBA championship last year, many wondered how he would respond in 2012-13. From a statistical standpoint, King James is as good as ever. While James is "only" fourth in league scoring at 26.8 points per game, he's shooting a career-best 55.6 percent from the field. He's also averaging a career-best 8.2 rebounds and a team-best seven assists while connecting on 40.8 percent of his 3-point attempts, also a career high. James scored his 5,000th point in a Miami uniform in Wednesday's win.

TRENDS:

* Over is 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Miami.
* Home team is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
* Over is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
* Clippers are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Miami.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. James' field-goal percentage has risen in seven straight seasons.

2. The Clippers have won six of the last nine meetings, with the home team prevailing in eight straight.

3. Miami is just 7-14 against teams above .500.

Ducks at Stars: What Bettors Need to Know

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars (+104, 5)

The Anaheim Ducks attempt to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the Pacific Division-rival Dallas Stars on Friday. Anaheim kicked off its six-game road trip with a 3-0 triumph over the Avalanche in Colorado on Wednesday as Viktor Fasth made 31 saves for his first NHL shutout and defenseman Sheldon Souray recorded a goal and an assist. With the victory, the Ducks extended their point streak to six games (5-0-1) and moved into a tie atop the division with the San Jose Sharks.

Dallas completed a 2-1-0 road trip Wednesday with a 3-2 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers. Jamie Benn recorded a goal and an assist while Jaromir Jagr set up a tally before scoring the game-winner 1:46 into the extra session. After hosting Anaheim, the Stars head back to Edmonton, where they begin another three-game trek on Tuesday.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NHL Network, FSN West (Anaheim), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (7-1-1): The impressive play of Fasth has given Anaheim one of the best goaltending tandems in the league. The 30-year-old, who won his second straight Honken Trophy - the Swedish Elite League's version of the Vezina - last season, is 4-0-0 with a 0.98 goals-against average and .962 save percentage. "He's played amazing in every game," Souray told the team's website. "He makes a big save and it gives the team confidence. He's definitely done his job, and beyond." Jonas Hiller, the Ducks' starting netminder, is 3-1-1 with a 3.54 GAA and has lost his last six starts against Dallas. Souray has scored a goal in three straight games.

ABOUT THE STARS (5-5-1): It's no surprise Jagr decided Wednesday's game. He is the NHL's all-time leader in overtime goals (17) and trails Phil Esposito (118) for the most game-winners in league history. The tally was the 668th of his career, tying him with Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille for 10th place on the all-time list. After recording just one assist over his first four games, Benn has registered three goals and five points in his last two contests. Goaltender Kari Lehtonen is just 7-5-2 lifetime against the Ducks but has posted a shutout in his last two home starts versus Anaheim.

TRENDS:

* Six of the last seven Ducks games have played under
* Anaheim wasn't favored by more than -128 during its four-game winning streak
* The under is 3-1-2 in the Stars' last six games
* Stars are 1-7 in their last 8 games following a win.
* Stars are 5-21 in their last 26 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

OVERTIME

1. The Stars won five of the six meetings between the teams last season and are 7-1-2 in the last 10 encounters.

2. Anaheim has captured only eight of its last 31 visits to Dallas.

3. Fasth is the first goalie to win his first four NHL games since San Jose's Nolan Schaefer accomplished the feat in 2005.

Pick: Game Total UNDER 195 -110
There will be plenty of firepower on the court for this one, especially if the reports that Chris Paul will be back in the lineup for the Clippers. I don't think that type of game will materialize here. The Clippers have been very assertive on the defensive end when playing the elite on the road. They held Denver to 92, Memphis to 73, Chicago to 89, Brooklyn to 86, and San Antonio to 87. The list is equally long for the Heat when facing quality opponents at home, holding Chicago, Oklahoma City, Utah, Golden State, Atlanta, and Brooklyn to under the century mark. The fact is that the Heat are 4-0 to the UNDER in the last four games vs. greater than .600 teams. Take the UNDER in this one.

Chicago at Utah (Fri): The Bulls have resembled a M*A*S*H unit over the past week or so with several key players nursing injuries, including Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer sidelined at the start of the week. That is in addition to the season long absence of Derrick Rose. Still the Bulls start the week seeded third in the East. Utah is having a typical Jazz season with an outstanding home record (17-5) and a poor road record (9-17).

Here they catch Chicago off a game a night earlier in Denver. It’s traditionally been a tough back to back situation playing in these two venues. This is a favorable situation for the hosts made even more favorable with the potential for the Bulls to be shorthanded. UTAH.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For College Basketball

We are going to take a Pass today in College Basketball and get ready for the more options that await us on Saturday. There is no need to force a play today. We have some work to do but I'm confident as we continue February we will put together a new Surge in profits. thanks.

Indian Cowboy's Picks For NBA Basketball

5-Unit Play. #804. Take Washington -1 over Brooklyn (Friday @ 7pm est).

3-Unit Play. #816. Take Memphis -3.5 over Golden State (Friday @ 8pm est).

This is a game in which Washington will get up for. They lost in extra time to Brooklyn earlier this year at home 113-115 and it was a game in which Washington was a 6 point underdog. With Brooklyn coming off a nice win against Detroit on the road, a game in which the Pistons were favored, it was a game in which the Pistons were expected to win and hence they were favored. Although the Nets were able to procure a win on the road in that game, I don't see it necessarily happening in this game. The Wizards don't look like they are having any type of let downs anytime soon as they lost by 10 points to the Spurs and covered that game, then defeated the Clippers at home by 8 as a 3 point underdog and most recently beat the Knicks by a 10 point margin as a 4.5 point underdog. This is a team that you would have thought would have a let down after the Clipper game but did not. I like the Wizards here with the revenge and with the fact the Nets have the Spurs on the horizon in their next game and are probably looking ahead. The Grizzlies have struggled without Rudy Gay and they have found it tough sledding on the offensive end in particular. But, they have always found comfort in playing the Warriors who they have beat the last 8 times straight up they have played them. The Warriors come off two very difficult losses on the road getting blown out both by the Thunder and were just sent packing by the Rockets losing to them by 30 points on the road. With Memphis being handed a fairly easy loss to the Hawks on the road, I look for them to bounce-back here against a familiar foe they are used to having success against. Sure, can the Warriors bounce-back, yes, but I still like Memphis to be able to put together a decent effort as they gel more with their starting lineup and in particular, as this starting lineup returns back home in front of a friendly Memphis crowd on a Friday Night.

Toronto Raptors vs Indiana Pacers Total
188½ un-105 at 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)
20* Eastern Conference TOTAL OF THE MONTH on Raptors/Pacers UNDER 188.5

The Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers will take part in a defensive battle tonight. The books have set the bar too high in this contest due to recent high-scoring games by both teams, which has forced them to inflate the number.

Indiana was out of character with its back-to-back home wins over Chicago (111-101) and Atlanta (114-103). It got back to reality last time out with an 88-69 road win at Philadelphia. Remember, this is a Pacers team that is scoring just 92.7 points/game and allowing 90.0 points/game on the season.

Toronto lost at home to Boston 95-99 last time out. Its previous three games had all seen 185 or less combined points with a 92-93 loss at Atlanta, a 98-73 home win over the Clippers, and an 85-100 home loss to Miami.

My biggest reason for backing the UNDER tonight is due to the recent history between these teams. The Raptors and Pacers have combined for 185 or less points in four of their last five meetings. That includes both meetings this season with a 74-72 Toronto road victory on November 13th for 146 combined points, and a 90-88 Indiana road win on October 31st for 178 combined points.

Indiana is 10-1 to the UNDER in home games vs. poor rebounding teams - outrebounded by opponents by 3+ per game over the last 2 seasons. We're seeing an average of 178.8 points/game in this situation. The UNDER is 6-0 in Pacers last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. Bet the UNDER in this game Friday.

NBA Feb 08 '13 (7:05p)
Brooklyn Nets vs Washington Wizards Total
185½ ov-107 at 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)
15* NBA Friday Total DOMINATOR on Nets/Wizards OVER 185.5

The books have set the bar too low tonight in this contest between the Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards. I look for a shootout tonight in Washington as both teams go for around 100 points apiece.

One look at the recent history between these teams and it's easy to see that the books have missed their mark. Washington and Brooklyn have combined for 197 or more points in each of their last three meetings.

The OVER is 8-3 in Wizards last 11 home games. The OVER is 4-1 in Wizards last 5 Friday games. The OVER is 4-1 in Wizards last 5 vs. NBA Atlantic division foes. Take the OVER in this game Friday.

NBA Feb 08 '13 (8:05p)
Portland Trailblazers vs Houston Rockets Total
211 ov-110 at betus
15* NBA Friday Total ANNIHILATOR on Blazers/Rockets OVER 211

The Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets will take part in a shootout tonight. Houston plays at a faster pace than any other team in the league, and it will control the tempo tonight playing at home.

Houston is scoring 110.0 points/game and allowing 103.5 points/game at home this season, combining with their opponents for 213.5 points/game. As you can see, that number is above tonight's posted total, giving us value to pull the trigger on the OVER.

The Rockets are hitting on all cylinders right now offensively. They have scored 108 or more points in six straight games, averaging a whopping 118.5 points/game in those six contests.

These teams last met on November 16th in an absolute shootout. Portland beat Houston 119-117 at home in overtime in a game that saw 236 combined points. It was tied 111-111 at the end of regulation for 222 combined points, so overtime was not needed to get the OVER.

The OVER is 4-1 in Blazers last 5 games overall. The OVER is 4-1 in Blazers last 5 vs. Western Conference opponents. The OVER is 8-3 in Rockets last 11 home games. The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Houston. Roll with the OVER in this game Friday.

NBA Feb 08 '13 (8:05p)
Los Angeles Clippers vs Miami Heat Total
195 un-105 at 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)
15* Clippers/Heat ESPN Friday No-Brainer on UNDER 195

The Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat are set to square off on National TV Friday night in what could easily be an NBA Finals preview. I look for defense to reign supreme tonight as both teams get after it on that end of the floor.

The Clippers are really struggling offensively of late because they have no chemistry right now due to injuries to Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Jamal Crawford. They have scored less than 100 points in 10 of their last 12 games overall. Los Angeles is averaging just 88.3 points/game in its last four contests.

Miami is coming off a very high scoring game against the Houston Rockets last time out, which is a big reason I believe the books have made the mistake of setting this total too high tonight. Miami's previous five games had all seen 193 or less combined points at the end of regulation.

This play falls into a system that is 92-48 (65.7%) to the UNDER over the past 5 seasons. It tells us to bet the UNDER on any team (MIAMI) - in a game involving two good teams (60% to 75%), on Friday nights. A great match-up like this almost always seems to bring out the best defensively in both teams.

The UNDER is 4-0 in Clippers last 4 games following a ATS win. The UNDER is 4-0 in Heat last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The UNDER is 4-0 in Heat last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. These three trends combined for a 12-0 system backing the UNDER tonight. Bet the UNDER in this game Friday.

NBA Feb 08 '13 (10:35p)
Chicago Bulls vs Utah Jazz Chicago Bulls
+4-105 at 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)
15* Bulls/Jazz ESPN Late-Night BAILOUT on Chicago +4

The Chicago Bulls are one of the most resilient teams in the league thanks in large part to the motivation their players receive from the most underrated head coach in the game in Tom Thibodeau. Off back-to-back blowout loss at Indiana and Denver, I look for them to respond in a big way tonight.

The Bulls have been one of the best road teams in the league this season. They are 14-9 away from home this year with road wins over the likes of Mami, New York, Boston and Atlanta in 2013 alone.

Chicago has had Utah’s number in recent meetings. It has won three straight and six of the last eight meetings in this series, going 6-2 ATS in the process. In fact, its last two wins over the Jazz have come by 14 and 18 points, respectively. This is clearly a team it matches up well against.

The Bulls are 41-21 ATS in their last 62 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. Chicago is 36-16-1 against the spread in its last 53 Friday games. Utah is 4-11 against the spread in its last 15 Friday games. The Bulls are 7-2 against the spread in their last 9 meetings with the Jazz, and 6-2 against the spread in their last 8 meetings in Utah. Take Chicago Friday.

INDIANA 103 - Toronto 82—The Pacers are on a tremendous roll at
the Bankers Life Fieldhouse, winning their last 15 home games, covering 11 of
those. Indy has been a solid favorite, logging a 19-9 mark laying points this
season and will be out for a bit of revenge after losing last meeting against
Toronto back on Nov. 13. Pacers continue to play some of the best defense in
the league this season, holding foes to an NBA-low 41.9% overall and 32.6%
from beyond the arc. Indy PF David West has caught a second wind recently,
scoring 22 ppg and shooting 58% in his last 4 games, and C Roy Hibbert is
coming off one of his best games of the season (18 pts., 14 rebs., 5 blocks vs.
Philly). Toronto is getting production from recently-acquired F Rudy Gay, who’s
scored 24.7 ppg as a Raptor, but Gay has shot just 25.6% against Indiana this
season.
