Tuesday's NBA playoff action: What bettors need to know

Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks (-6, 183)

Indiana leads series 1-0.

The New York Knicks had a hard time dealing with the physical play of the Indiana Pacers in Game 1. If the Knicks hope to avoid dropping two straight at home to begin the series, they will need to figure out a way to counter that rugged presence when they host the Pacers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Tuesday. New York squandered home-court advantage in the series in Game 1, when Paul George locked up Carmelo Anthony.

George got Indiana through the first round on the offensive end and scored 19 points in Game 1 against the Knicks, but his big contribution came on defense. The All-Star forward harassed Anthony and J.R. Smith into bad shots and made sure their charges into the lane went through center Roy Hibbert. The rough play jacked up the foul total for both teams, and the Pacers were able to make their big run in the third quarter when Anthony went to the bench with foul trouble. New York’s star came alive in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved too great.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana did exactly what it needed to do in winning the first game, setting itself up for at worst a 1-1 draw heading back home for Game 3. The Pacers had trouble when the Atlanta Hawks went to a bigger lineup in the first round but brought plenty of toughness to counter Kenyon Martin and Tyson Chandler in Game 1 against the Knicks. Hibbert proved to be the key, clogging the middle of the lane and staying straight up when challenging shots at the rim to avoid foul calls. Indiana forced New York to play at its pace and George held Anthony to 5-of-17 and Smith to 0-of-7 shooting when he was matched up against the Knicks’ top scorers.

ABOUT THE KNICKS: Anthony was 10-for-28 overall in the contest and is shooting 31.8 percent in the last four playoff games. He mentioned after Game 1 that his ailing left shoulder had bothered him during the contest but declined to use the Pacers’ physical play as an excuse. “The physicality of this game didn’t do nothing to me, to us,” Anthony told reporters. New York’s big problems were on the glass, where they were outrebounded 44-30, and in the paint. The Knicks prefer to play smaller, with Anthony at the power forward spot and a trio of guards. That leads to a difficult defensive match for Anthony on Pacers forward David West, who scored 20 points in Game 1.

TRENDS:

* Pacers are 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings in New York.
* Underdog is 13-6 ATS in the last 19 meetings.
* Pacers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.
* Knicks are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 home games.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Knicks are 0-5 all-time when losing Game 1 of a series at home. The last time they lost a Game 1 at home was to the Pacers in the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals.

2. Indiana G Lance Stephenson grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in Game 1.

3. New York F Amar’e Stoudemire (left knee) is targeting Game 3 for his return. He has been out since March.

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-2.5, 186)

Oklahoma City leads series 1-0.

Kevin Durant refused to let Oklahoma City lose the opener and the Thunder look to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday. Memphis led most of the contest and took a nine-point lead into the final quarter but Durant capped a 35-point, 15-rebound effort by hitting the go-ahead shot with 11.1 seconds left in the 93-91 victory. The Grizzlies attempt to bounce back from the agonizing loss.

Memphis had won four consecutive postseason games by double digits and carried the flow of play for most of the opener. But Oklahoma City’s rally and some sloppy Memphis possessions down the stretch allowed the Thunder to squeeze out a victory. “It was a game that I think that we all think we should’ve won,” Grizzlies forward Quincy Pondexter said afterward. “We were right there in it and they really did a great job of executing down the stretch.” Durant received offensive support from guard Kevin Martin (25 points) and the Thunder actually outrebounded the Grizzlies 43-41. The free-throw line was also a deciding element as Oklahoma City went 22-of-25 while Memphis struggled to 14-for-24.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Two turnovers in the final 18 seconds did in Memphis in the opener despite the fact Pondexter had a chance to force overtime when he was sent to the free-throw line to attempt three shots with 1.6 seconds left. Point guard Mike Conley had a subpar game and his 5-of-15 shooting line marked the fourth time in five games he has shot below 40 percent. Power forward Zach Randolph fell two points short of his fifth straight 20-point outing while notching his third double-double in five games and center Marc Gasol had his second double-double of the postseason but the inside presence wasn’t a difference-maker despite Oklahoma City post starters Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins combining to make only 2-of-16 shots. Pondexter provided a boost off the bench with 13 points and hit three of Memphis’ seven 3-pointers.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Martin has back-to-back 25-point outings after being largely disappointing over most of the first-round series with the Houston Rockets. He is 6-for-10 from 3-point range in the two games while helping make up for the scoring void caused by the loss of Russell Westbrook (knee) for the postseason. “It was just moving without the ball, guys getting screens and guys finding me,” Martin said after Sunday’s victory. “We’ve got a nice little flow going right now. We’re just making an extra effort to get everyone involved.” Durant has been stellar with four games of 35 or more points over the last five outings. He is averaging 32.9 points in the postseason despite hitting just 27.3 percent of his 3-point attempts.

TRENDS:

* Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Oklahoma City.
* Over is 19-7 in the last 26 meetings in Oklahoma City.
* Over is 14-6 in the last 20 meetings.
* Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Road team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Durant has scored 20 or more points in 33 consecutive playoff games.

2. Memphis SF Tayshaun Prince suffered a hip injury during Game 1 so Pondexter may again receive extended minutes.

3. Thunder G Derek Fisher was fined $5,000 by the NBA for flopping in Game 5 of the first-round series against the Houston Rockets.

Tuesday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-140, 5)

Ottawa leads series 2-1.

Three games does a bitter rivalry make - at least when it comes to the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. The Eastern Conference first-round series between the Canadian neighbors has quickly devolved into a brawl-filled, vitriol-laced hate fest following a brutal Game 3 in which the seventh-seeded Senators pummeled Montreal physically and on the scoreboard. Ottawa can take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series when it hosts the Canadiens in Tuesday's Game 4.

The teams had never met in the postseason, but they combined for 236 penalty minutes and nine players received game misconducts in the Senators' 6-1 rout Sunday - a game Ottawa led by only 2-1 after two periods before the game got out of hand in every aspect. There were 14 fighting majors in the third period alone and the sniping extended to behind both benches. Montreal coach Michel Therrien was incensed that the Senators called timeout with only 17 seconds left in the game, calling the move "classless" and accusing counterpart Paul MacLean of trying to "humiliate" his team. MacLean claimed he was "forced to protect" his players. “It got a little bit stupid in the end, but that’s hockey,” MacLean said.

TV: 7 p.m. CNBC, CBC

ABOUT THE CANADIENS: Montreal captain Brian Gionta, as well as regular-season leading scorer Max Pacioretty, returned to the lineup Sunday after one-game injury absences. Gionta had a glittering chance to get his team back in the game when he broke in alone early in the third period, but his backhander was denied by Senators goaltender Craig Anderson. "It was definitely the turning point of the game and it spiraled out of control from there,” Gionta said. Canadiens netminder Carey Price had his second poor performance of the series, allowing the six goals on 30 shots. That continued a theme from the regular season that has seen Price hold the opposition under three goals only four times in his last 13 appearances.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Rookie Jean-Gabriel Pageau was a most unlikely hero in Game 3, registering his first career hat trick. Pageau delivered a memorable go-ahead goal on a shot while his face was bloodied and he lost a tooth on a high stick from Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban. "I might put it under my pillow and see what happens," Pageau quipped of the knocked-out tooth. He was not called up from Ottawa's AHL affiliate until last month and entered the series with only nine NHL games on his resume. Still, Pageau is as responsible for this series as any player, scoring the game-winning goal in the regular-season finale vs. Boston - a win that allowed Montreal to claim the No. 2 seed and set up the matchup with the Senators.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.
* Canadiens are 0-4 in the last four meetings in Ottawa.
* Over is 8-3-1 in Canadiens' last 12 overall.
* Under is 34-13-10 in Senators' last 57 overall.

OVERTIME:

1. Senators D Eric Gryba, who was suspended two games for his jarring hit on Lars Eller in Game 1, is eligible to return Tuesday. He is expected to take the place of D Patrick Wiercioch, who was hurt in Game 3.

2. Canadiens RW Brendan Gallagher was among three players named as finalists for the Calder Trophy that goes to the league's top rookie. Gallagher scored 15 goals in the regular season and has two goals in the playoffs.

3. Ottawa G Craig Anderson has turned aside 112 of 118 shots for a save percentage of .949, as compared to Price's .905.

Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild (+156, 5)

The Minnesota Wild looked like a different team at home in Game 3, outshooting the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks for the first time in their Western Conference first-round series to win their first postseason game in five years. The eighth-seeded Wild host Game 4 on Tuesday hoping to even the series at two games apiece. Rookie Jason Zucker’s shot from a sharp angle 2:15 into overtime gave Minnesota a 3-2 victory on Sunday after falling twice at Chicago: 5-2 in Game 2 and 2-1 in overtime in Game 1. The Blackhawks held a 85-55 shot advantage through the first two games, but the Wild used their relentless forecheck and home-ice energy to generate 37 shots on Sunday and keep the series within their grasp.

Chicago forward Patrick Kane set up both goals by the Blackhawks in Game 3 and leads the series with five points - all assists. Minnesota netminder Josh Harding turned aside 25 shots to earn his first career playoff victory on Sunday and will start Game 4 with Niklas Backstrom still ailing from an injury suffered while warming up for Game 1. Corey Crawford has started all three games for Chicago and was absent from the Blackhawks’ practice on Monday in order to rest for Tuesday’s contest. Chicago is the only team with a power-play goal in the series, going 1-for-9 with the man advantage, while Minnesota has not scored in nine opportunities. The Blackhawks also got a short-handed goal from Michael Frolik, suggesting their special teams might be the difference in a tense Game 4 against the Wild.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, CBC, RDS2, NBCSN, Comcast Sportsnet Chicago, Fox Sports North

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Rookie Brandon Saad was named as one of three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy on Monday along with Jonathan Huberdeau of the Florida Panthers and Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens. Saad recorded 10 goals and 27 points and a plus-17 rating while playing most of the season on Chicago’s top line with Marian Hossa and captain Jonathan Toews. “There’s a lot of great rookies this year that had a good season so it’s definitely an honor and I’m very excited,” Saad told reporters following practice on Monday. The 20-year-old has yet to record a point in the series and finished minus-2 in Game 3. Ray Emery and Dave Bolland practiced with the team on Monday but neither will be in the lineup on Tuesday due to lower-body injuries.

ABOUT THE WILD: Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who registered his first two points of the series with a goal and an assist on Sunday, was also instrumental in Minnesota’s last playoff victory on April 14, 2008, when he scored the winning goal in overtime against the Colorado Avalanche. Bouchard is one of five Wild players from that game who is still with the team, along with goaltenders Harding and Backstrom, captain Mikko Koivu and Stephane Veilleux, who was recalled from the AHL on Sunday and has not played an NHL game since April 7, 2012. Koivu has yet to record a point in the series and is minus-3 despite averaging over 20 minutes time on ice per game and firing six shots. Zach Parise, who leads the team with 12 shots, scored his first of the postseason to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead early in the third period of Sunday’s victory.

TRENDS:

* Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Minnesota.
* Home team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Blackhawks are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 6-0-1 in Blackhawks' last 7 road games.

OVERTIME:

1. Chicago’s last three losses have all come on the road.

2. The Blackhawks lost consecutive games just four times during the regular season.

3. Each of Minnesota’s last three playoff victories have been 3-2 overtime decisions.

Three streaking 'under' pitchers on the mound Tuesday

Tuesday's MLB schedule features a few starters that have pitched well enough to keep scorelines under the total in back-to-back starts. Here is a look at three streaking under pitchers around the majors.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (1-3, 3.38 ERA)

The under is 2-0 in Bailey's previous two starts and 3-1 in his four starts heading into Tuesday. He was the hard luck loser on April 26 in a 1-0 loss versus the Washington Nationals despite having one of his better starts on the season. He pitched seven strong innings and allowed the one earned run on five hits. The Reds righty has been excellent in his last four starts posting an ERA of 2.39 in 26 1/3 innings pitched.

Bailey faces the Atlanta Braves Tuesday. He was 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA in two starts versus Atlanta in 2012. The over/under was 0-1-1 in those two games.

Kirk Medlen is scheduled to start for the Braves.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (2-2, 2.50 ERA)

Wood is coming off his longest outing of the season on May 2 in a 4-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. The lefty went 7 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on four hits en route to the loss. The Cubbies are one of the best under bets on the season at 12-19 O/U and the under is 4-2 in Wood's starts. The Cubs supply Wood with just 3.33 runs per game and he boasts one of the best WHIP totals in the Nation League at 0.91.

Wood faces the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field Tuesday. The Cards will counter with righty Lance Lynn.

Wood was 0-2 in three starts versus St. Louis in 2012. He gave up 16 earned runs in 16 innings.

Scott Diamond, Minnesota Twins (2-2, 3.97 ERA)

Diamond will make his fifth start of the season Tuesday. The Twins are 0-3-1 O/U in Diamond's starts. The Canadian is has strung together three quality starts in a row and has a very respectable 15.9 pitches per inning. He has exhibited excellent control this season with just three walks in his 22 2/3 innings pitched. His stats look a little inflated due to a rough outing to start his season. Diamond was knocked around and chased from the game against the New York Mets on April 13. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs.

The lefty is on the hill versus the Boston Red Sox Tuesday. Fellow Canadian Ryan Dempster is scheduled to start for the Sox.

This will be Diamond's first career start versus Boston.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
By JASON LOGAN

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The San Francisco Giants have a big National League showdown with the Atlanta Braves on deck this week, serving as a possible NL Championship Series preview. But before the reigning World Series winners open AT&T Park to the Braves Thursday, they welcome the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set starting Monday.

Philadelphia, once a contender for the NL Pennant, has limped out to a 14-18 start. The Phillies' bats have struggled to make contact, hitting .353, and the pitching staff is lugging a 4.51 collective ERA. Philadelphia marches Cliff Lee, Kyle Kendrick and Jonathan Pettibone to the mound for this series, the latter two presenting some solid betting value against a Giants squad looking ahead to Atlanta.

Letdown spot

The 2013 NFL season is five months away but spreads were recently released for all games from Week 1 to Week 16 at Cantor Gaming sportsbooks in Nevada. Football bettors searching for letdown value on the schedule can look no further than the Dallas Cowboys’ road game at Kansas City as 1.5-point favorites in Week 2.

Dallas once again opens the season versus the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football. Last year, the Cowboys started the schedule with a huge primetime road win at MetLife Stadium only to fall flat on their faces in a 27-7 loss at Seattle as 3-point favorites Week 2. Dallas is set up to repeat that fate at Arrowhead in the second week of the season and will undoubtedly be bet up from -1.5 come kickoff on September 15.

Schedule spot

Our traditional schedule spots involve teams with a clustered calendar, jumping through hoops and time zones to make their games. This week, however, the schedule spot doesn’t so much center around one team as it does one player. Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade has a homecoming planned when his team travels to Chicago for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Saturday.

Wade, a Windy City Native, has been slowed by injuries for most of the NBA season. He averaged 21.2 points during the regular season – lowest since his rookie season – and is scoring just 13.7 points over three postseason appearances. Miami’s long layoff between series has allowed him to rest up and, with LeBron James likely letting his teammate take the spotlight, bettors should expect a spirited effort from D-Wade in Chitown this weekend.

The Knicks Try to Even the Series Versus the Pacers

Eastern Conference Playoffs Second Round
Game 2 - Indiana leads New York 1-0
Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Line: New York -5.5 Total: 185.5

After the Pacers stole Game 1 with a scrappy effort, the Knicks host Indiana again in a pivotal Game 2.

Game 1 didn’t go the way the Knicks planned, with Carmelo Anthony really struggling from the floor (10-of-28 FG) and the Pacers playing excellent interior defense. Indiana’s starting front court combined for seven blocks in the game and the Pacers out-rebounded the Knicks 44-30. Indiana finished the game a little sloppier than they had planned, but ended up winning 102-95 behind a great performance from David West. The Pacers are now 1-0 ATS in the series and have covered in three straight. Since 1996, Indiana is 26-10 ATS after two straight games of out-rebounding an opponent by 10 or more. The Pacers have a huge size advantage over New York when Carmelo Anthony is at the power forward position and it appears the Knicks could use Amar’e Stoudemire in this series. Stoudemire is expected back in Game 3 after suffering multiple knee injuries during the regular season.

The Indiana Pacers came out in Game 1 and dictated play with their ferocious interior defense. Roy Hibbert was the head of that defense, blocking five shots in the game. Hibbert also finished the game with 14 points (6-of-9 FG), eight rebounds and four assists. Lance Stephenson was the most noticeable rebounder on the court for the Pacers, grabbing 13 boards in the game to go along with 11 points (5-of-9 FG). The biggest impact in the game offensively for Indiana may have come from D.J. Augustin off the bench. In just 13 minutes of play, Augustin had 16 points (5-of-6 FG, 4-of-5 3PT). Paul George struggled shooting the ball (5-of-14 FG), but he did score 19 points (5-of-14 FG) and grab five rebounds. George was getting to the free throw line where he connected on 7-of-8. David West was the best offensive player for the Pacers, scoring 20 points (8-of-15 FG) while also blocking two shots. West was going right at Carmelo Anthony who is a little too small to handle West in the paint.

The New York Knicks got off to a hot start in Game 1, but after the first quarter it was all Pacers in Madison Square Garden. Carmelo Anthony really struggled from the field in the game, scoring an inefficient 27 points (10-of-28 FG) while also committing some costly turnovers. J.R. Smith struggled yet again for New York, finishing the game with 17 points (4-of-15 FG) and five rebounds in a game where he couldn’t get any of his jump shots to fall. Raymond Felton continued to be the Knicks best player in the postseason, finishing with 18 points (8-of-12 FG) and three assists in 38 minutes. The Knicks will need Carmelo Anthony to stay out of foul trouble in Game 2, which is now a must win for New York after dropping Game 1.

The Grizzlies Try to Even Up the Series in Oklahoma City

Western Conference Playoffs Second Round
Game 2 - Oklahoma City leads Memphis 1-0
Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:30 p.m. ET
Line: Oklahoma City -3.0 Total: 186.0

The Oklahoma City Thunder host the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 2 where the Thunder look to go up 2-0 on Lionel Hollins’ squad.

The Oklahoma City Thunder pulled out a very close win over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of what has the looks of a long series. The Thunder won 93-91 behind 35 points from Kevin Durant. With the Thunder winning by just two points, that makes the Grizzlies 6-1 ATS so far in this year’s playoffs. Memphis was 3-1 ATS over the Thunder during the regular season and they are now 4-1. Memphis is a good road team ATS, going 24-16-1 during the regular season but that will mean nothing when playing the Thunder. Oklahoma City is dominant on their home floor and this regular season they went 26-14-1 ATS. Oklahoma City knows how important it will be to win their home games against this Memphis team and will be playing extremely hard with that in mind.

The Memphis Grizzlies were right there at the end of Game 1 and led by a point with under 30 seconds left before Kevin Durant hit a clutch jump shot to take the lead for Oklahoma City. Zach Randolph finished the game with good numbers, but struggled somewhat from the field. Randolph played 37 minutes and had 18 points (7-of-16 FG) and 10 rebounds. Marc Gasol was Memphis’ best player, finishing the game with 20 points (8-of-14 FG) and 10 rebounds while also blocking two shots. The Grizzlies are going to need Mike Conley to shoot the ball better if they are going to win this series. In Game 1, Conley had just 13 points (5-of-15 FG, 1-of-5 3PT) and three assists. With under five seconds left and the Grizzlies down three, Quincy Pondexter was fouled on a three point attempt. Pondexter went to the line and missed the first free throw which ultimately gave the Thunder the victory.

The Oklahoma City Thunder struggled without Russell Westbrook at times during Game 1, but Kevin Durant stepped his game up and hit some huge shots. Durant played 44 minutes in the game and finished with 35 points (13-of-26 FG), 15 rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Helping out Durant with the scoring load was Kevin Martin. Martin has excelled in the sixth man role for the Thunder all year and in Game 1 he was at his best. In 32 minutes of play, Martin finished with 25 points (8-of-14 FG, 3-of-5 3PT) and seven rebounds. Outside of Durant and Martin, only Reggie Jackson scored in double digits. The second-year guard had 12 points, three rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes of play. He has done everything the Thunder have

Game: Chicago at Minnesota (9:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: Chicago -165 (moneyline)

The Minnesota Wild broke out of a five year drought without recording a playoffs win, as they won Game Three and now trail Chicago two games to one. Chicago has been lethal in this spot, as during the regular season they failed to record a win in consecutive games just four times, so I expect their resolve to be intensified for Game Four tonight. Minnesota not only recorded their first playoffs win in five years, but the last three times they have recorded a win in the playoffs, each game required overtime, and their margin for error remains razor thin. The Blackhawks are 38-13 in their last 51, and 7-1 in their last eight after scoring 2 or less in their previous game. The Wild has struggled vs. the elite as they are just 1-7 in their last eight against a team over .600. Game four goes to Chicago.

Penguins won 10 of last 13 games, are 28-9 in last 37 games vs Islanders, but needed a PP goal in OT to win Game 3, when they were outshot 36-25 (79-58 last two games); three of five Pitt goals came on power play (3-5)- New York was 0-3 on power play. Islanders lost five of their last six games overall, but won five of last seven home games. Penguins won six of last seven visits to Long Island, with last five of those going over total. Eight of last eleven series games overall went over total. Islanders have outscored Pittsburgh 3-0 in third period of series, but Penguins did win only OT game.

Home team is 3-0 in Chicago-Minnesota series; Wild had been outscored 21-7 in losing six of its last seven home games before winning in OT in Game 3; they're 0-9 on power play in series, allowed a shorthanded goal in Game 2, they're 5-8 in their last 13 games overall. Blackhawks won 11 of last 14 games overall, eight of last 12 on road; they won four of last five games with Minnesota. Over is 5-2-2 in last nine Wild games, 1-5-1 in last seven Chicago games. Minnesota scored total of 14 goals in its last eight games. Chicago is just 1-9 on power play in series, with only goal scored in Game 1.

Home side won nine of last ten Montreal-Ottawa games; Canadiens lost last four games in this building (2-1ot/5-1/2-1so/6-1). Last 11 series games went OMOMOMOMOMO, so is it Montreal's turn to win here? Senators are 8-4 in last twelve games overall, with 11 of last 14 staying under the total. Ottawa lost three of last four home games; they were 3-11 on power play in Game 3 bloodbath, after being 0-6 in first two games. Canadiens are 4-6 in last ten road games. There were 236 penalty minutes, nine ejections in last game, and an Ottawa timeout with 0:17 left in a 6-1 game fanned the flames a bit.

Sharks were underdog in this series, but are 6-0 vs Vancouver this season and go for sweep here, allowing total of five goals in three series wins; San Jose is now 15-6 in last 21 games overall; they won first round series six of last eight years, are used to success in spring. Canucks are 3-8 in last eleven games overall; they're actually 5-4 in last nine visits to Shark Tank. Under is now 6-2-3 in last 11 San Jose-Vancouver games. Canucks scored only eight goals in last five games overall. San Jose was 3-8 on power play last game, after being 1-9 in first two games. Canucks don't have first period goal in series.

Carmelo Anthony is 35-95 (36.8%) from floor in four games vs Indiana; JR Smith is 15-51 in three losses vs Pacers, 12-21 in two New York Ws. Eight of last 11 Knick games stayed under the total; 11 of last 15 Indy games went over. Pacers won last two away games after losing previous four on road, all by 10+ points. NY is 9-4 vs spread in last 13 games as a home favorite, winning 12 of last 14 at home SU. Indiana's bench was -9 in game 1, but played only 39:00. Hibbert's presence as shot blocker is keeping Knicks away from baskets, and their two gunners haven't shot well against the Pacers this season.

Memphis won four of last five games, losing by hoop here in Game 1, as Martin scored 25 points (+14) off bench, giving OC a scoring threat to compliment Durant. Last three Memphis-OC games were decided by a total of three points; Griz' 14-24 from foul line in last game wasn't good. Grizzlies are 4-1-1 against the spread in last six games as an underdog. Westbrook is out for this series, which puts onus on vet PG Fisher and BC alum Jackson, who had only one turnover in 31 minutes in Game 1. 17 of last 21 Thunder games stayed under the total. Five of last seven Memphis games went over.

Tuesday NBA & MLB

Thunder -2.5 over Grizzles
Memphis out played the Thunder in Game 1, but showed they did not have what it takes to close out a big playoff game on the road. I am still high on this team and think they can get it done back in Memphis, but I think this series is probably over because of that win they gave away the other day. Memphis played flawless for 46 minutes. All the pressure in the world is on Memphis tonight and I believe it will work against them. The Thunder will play loose at home and I think these past 48 hours have been tough on this Memphis team. I know its hard to win without Westbrook, but I just don't see Memphis playing flawless defense and then on top of that scoring close to 100 points to be able to win the game. Take the Thunder.

Tigers -110 over Nationals
Sanchez/Zimmermann
Anibal Sanchez has 50 strikeouts this year with the most impressive number being no home runs allowed. The Nationals have yet to really find their bats against right handed pitching while the Tigers are crushing the ball putting up on average two more runs per game then the Nats. This is going to be a great pitchers duel, but the srikeouts and that ability not to give up runs on one pitch have me really liking Detroit tonight. Take the Tigers.

15* Pacers/Knicks TNT Tuesday No-Brainer on OVER 183

The books have once again missed their mark on the total in Game 2 of this series just as they did in Game 1. Indiana beat New York 102-95 in Game 1 for 197 combined points despite a total set of just 181.5.

What the public and thus the oddsmakers have failed to realize is that Indiana is no longer a slow-it-down, defensive team. That's evident by the fact that the Pacers are 9-3 to the OVER in their last 12 games overall. They have scored 100-plus points in 10 of their last 18 games as well.

We all know that the Knicks can fill it up as they are averaging 101.4 points/game at home this season. They managed 95 points in Game 1 despite shooting just 43.2% as a team, including 10-for-28 from Carmelo Anthony and 4-for-15 from J.R. Smith. I look for both Anthony and Smith to be much more efficient tonight, which will lead to 100-plus points for New York.

The OVER is 4-0 in Pacers last 4 Conference Semifinals games. The OVER is 11-3 in Pacers last 14 games playing on 1 days rest. The OVER is 4-1 in Knicks last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Take the OVER in this game Tuesday.

20* Grizzlies/Thunder TNT Late-Night BAILOUT on UNDER 186.5

This Memphis vs. Oklahoma City series has defensive battle written all over it. With no Russell Westbrook, the Thunder are virtually forced to play a half-court game, which is exactly what Memphis likes.

These teams combined for 184 points in Game 1 with a 93-91 Oklahoma City victory. Memphis shot 42.7% while the Thunder were held to 41.2% shooting. I look for an even lower-scoring game in Game 2 tonight.

The UNDER is 20-6 in Grizzlies last 26 vs. NBA Northwest division opponents. The UNDER is 36-17 in Grizzlies last 53 games playing on 1 days rest. The UNDER is 10-1-1 in Thunder last 12 vs. NBA Southwest foes. The UNDER is 20-5-2 in Thunder last 27 games overall. The UNDER is 13-3-1 in Thunder last 17 home games. Bet the UNDER in this game Tuesday.

25* NBA Second Round TOTAL OF THE YEAR on Warriors/Spurs UNDER 205

I'm siding with the UNDER in this Game 2 between the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors as my best total for the entire second round of the playoffs. I successfully cashed in the OVER in Game 1, but I'm going in the other way in Game 2.

After a high-scoring, 129-127 double-overtime victory in Game 1, the books have been forced to set this number higher than it should be. The total was set at 201 for Game 1, and now it's been jacked all the way up to 205, providing us with excellent line value on the UNDER.

Golden State shot lights out in Game 1 at 51.0% behind Stephon Curry's amazing shooting display. He put in 44 points, and there's no way the Warriors light it up again like they did in Game 1 as San Antonio makes the proper adjustments.

Both teams were simply gassed after playing a double-overtime game. I believe that will carry over into this Game 2 as nearly really looks to run the floor like they normally would. I look for this to be a half-court game, and for the shooting to be off due to the tired legs.

This play falls into a system that is 43-12 (78.2%) to the UNDER over the last 5 seasons. It tells us to bet the UNDER on home teams where the total is 200 to 209.5 (SAN ANTONIO) - after going over the total by 42 or more points total in their last five games, with a winning record on the season playing another winning team.

San Antonio is 8-1 to the UNDER in home games after scoring 110 points or more this season. Bet the UNDER in this game Wednesday.

15* MLB Tuesday No-Doubt Rout on Cincinnati Reds -115

The Cincinnati Reds are showing solid value as a small home favorite over the Atlanta Braves tonight given the edge they have on the mound. I look for a blowout victory for the home team as they bounce back from a loss in Game 1.

Homer Bailey is one of the most underrated starters in the league. The right-hander has posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.179 WHIP in all starts this season, and he's 1-0 with a minscule 0.90 ERA and 0.850 WHIP in three home starts.

If that's not enough to wow you with this guy, then just take a look at his career numbers against Atlanta. Bailey is 2-0 with a 2.41 ERA and 1.125 WHIP in three career starts against the Braves, and the Reds are a perfect 3-0 in those starts having never lost. Roll with the Reds Tuesday.

15* MLB Tuesday Late-Night BAILOUT on Miami Marlins +162

The Miami Marlins are showing some of their best value of the season as a big road underdog to the San Diego Padres tonight. San Diego (14-18) doesn't have any business being this heavily favored against any team in this league.

That's especially the case tonight considering the edge that Miami has on the mound. Alex Sanabia is just 2-4 with a 4.67 ERA in all starts this year, but he's 1-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three road starts, pitching his best away from home.

Eric Stults has been simply atrocious for San Diego, going 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA in all starts, and 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two home starts. Stults is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two career starts against the Marlins as well.

Miami is 24-12 (+15.2 Units) against the money line in road games in May games over the last 3 seasons. The Marlins are 26-17 (+12.6 Units) against the money line in road games vs. an NL team with a team batting average of .245 or worse over the last 3 seasons. Bet the Marlins Tuesday.

NBA
Indiana at NY Knicks (-6) 7:00 PM ET TNT

3% Indiana +6

5% Indiana Series (-150)

Successful NBA teams in the Eastern Conference play great defense and a physical brand of basketball come Playoff time. Hello Indiana Pacers! What Indiana has lacked until the last 2 games was roadability. But on Friday, they closed out Atlanta, 81-73, with a victory that snapped the Hawks 13 game series site win streak. On Sunday, they opened at NY, another series in which the road team had prevailed in each game of the regular season. Again Indiana played a physical style with great defense winning by a count of 102-95. In that Game #1 writeup, I mentioned that NY’s success would be linked to their ability to knock down a 3 pointer. For the game, NY shot 43% making just 7/19 threes. A microcosm of NY’s failure in this series will be the fact that Carmelo is shooting just 38% in the Playoffs and 26% from behind the arc. Indiana’s physical play also translated into the fact that the Pacers held a +14 rebound margin. Can the Knicks win this game or the series? They can, but only if the triples begin to drop and that is not likely against this Indiana defense that held the Knicks to 37% from the floor in 4 regular season meetings and led the Eastern Conference in defense at 90 PPG. Physicality and defense again prevail in the East making Indiana worthy, not only of a play in this game, but also in the series.

Memphis at OKC (-2-) 9:30 PM ET TNT

3% Memphis +2-

3% Memphis Series +140

Without Westbrook, it is clear that OKC is a shell of their former offensive selves. After averaging nearly 107 PPG in the regular season, the Thunder averaged just 102.5 in the L5 games without Westbrook in winning the previous series. And that was against a Houston team clearly not known for stopping anybody. Again in Game #1 of this series, they were held to 93 points by the #1 defense in the NBA, a Memphis team that allows 89 PPG. Despite the Game #1 victory, OKC shot just 41% from the field and 5-15 from behind the arc. It was the big shot mentality of Durant that resulted in the narrow victory. Durant’s presence combined with a 37-8 home court record is a reason why it is never easy to fade the Thunder at this price point on this court. But the Grizz are structured to succeed in the Playoffs with great half-court offense led by interior play of Randolph and Gasol and, of course, that top rated defense. The situational plays are all over the Grizz as one might expect. These include Class A road teams to -2/loss and any Round #2 Game #2 road team in this price range who is not off a double digit win, an over 68% play. Huge mental edge to the visitors in this with the only concern being Durant at crunch time on his strong home court!

MLB

Seattle (Harang) at Pittsburgh (McDonald) (-130) 7:05 PM ET
3% Seattle (Harang) (+120)

My first 2 MLB losses last night were brutal results. In the afternoon, KC failed to hold a 1-0 lead in the 9th losing in extra innings. The first score of the night saw Tampa Bay lead Toronto 7-0 before allowing the Blue Jays 2 runs in the top of the 9th to lose the game 8-7 dropping the Rays series record to 27-7 and giving Toronto consecutive wins for only the 2nd time in 10 tries. With that said, we approach Tuesday, May 7th with caution in an effort to fend off any bad fortune that might result in a losing streak. Despite the losing day, MLB still remains 81-53 on the run. A pair of NBA winners are joined by both NBA sides to bring you back to the winners circle with a 4-0 evening.

In this contest, I am eager to fade McDonald who sports an ERA of 5.76, 1.65 WHIP and disturbing 25/20 KBB. McDonald is off an outing in which he allowed 7 runs on 8 hits with 5 walks in 5 IP in a 12-8 loss to Milwaukee. Seattle enters on positive runs of 6-2 and 3-1. Harang pitched 3 horrendous games to begin the season. But the crafty veteran went back to the basics in making some minor mechanical changes to his delivery prior to his last outing. It resulted in an 8-3 victory vs. Baltimore in which Harang allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 IP. While with NL teams, Harang toiled with great success from this mound posting a 5-0 record with 3.16 ERA from this mound in his last 5 starts. Mariners with a bullpen index of 174 are one of the few teams whose relief corp is on par with the Pirates index of 163. Make Seattle your dog of day.

St. Louis (Lynn) (-130) at Chicago Cubs (Wood) 8:05 PM ET

4% St. Louis (Lynn) (-130)

Wood has pitched outstanding ball for the Cubs with only a 2-2 record to show for it. Yet he has a 2.50 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and .176 BAA. But he has had little success from this mound with a record of 0-7 and 4.58 ERA in his last 12 home starts. In addition, Wood was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA vs. St. Louis last year. The Cubs come off a rare win, a situation which finds them 2-9 including 0-4 home/win. Enter St Louis who is on a 6 game winning streak scoring 30 runs in their last 4 victories. Lynn has won his last 10 starts. This year, Lynn is 5-0 with a 2.75 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 39/15 KBB. Last season, Lynn was 4-0 with a 2.96 ERA vs. the Cubs.

Texas (Grimm) (-105) at Milwaukee (Peralta) 8:10 PM ET

4% Texas (Grimm) (-105)

Milwaukee has one of the strongest home fields in baseball with an extended record of 115-66. This season, however, they are 9-10 at home including 0-8 home/loss. The Brewers have lost 5 games by a count of 35-17. For the season, Peralta has a 6.00 ERA, a 1.67 WHIP and troubling 18/14 KBB. Peralta is off an outing in which he allowed 6 runs in 11 hits in 4 1/3 IP of a 6-5 loss to St. Louis. Those numbers are hardly what we look for to end a negative streak. The Rangers come off an embarrassing loss to the Cubs last night and we will be quick to take advantage. Again this season, Texas is an MLB best 9-2/loss outscoring the opposition 61-26. Grimm has been fantastic since being forced into the rotation. In that period of time, Grimm has a record of 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 24/8 KBB. Rangers bounce back extending Milwaukee’s home field misery.
