Saturday's NBA action: What bettors need to know

New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers (-4, 183.5)

Best-of-seven series tied 1-1.

The Indiana Pacers have had three days to get over the mental hurdle of Game 2’s breakdown. The Pacers will try to avoid another meltdown when they host Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks on Saturday. The Knicks bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 30-2 run in Game 2 that buried Indiana and evened the series at a game apiece. Carmelo Anthony was at his best during the decisive spurt.

Anthony might be getting some more help in the form of Amar’e Stoudemire, who has been out since March 7 following knee debridement, is expected to play 10-15 minutes in Game 3. Stoudemire gives the Knicks another big body to bang around with Roy Hibbert and David West on the inside. Those two were a big part of Indiana’s Game 1 victory but could not stop the bleeding when New York started to get going in Game 2. The Pacers dominated the Atlanta Hawks in Indiana during the first round and had no problem bouncing back from some tough losses in that series.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE KNICKS: Anthony scored 16 of his 32 points during the decisive run in Game 2 as New York reached 100 points in a postseason game for the first time since 1999 with the 105-79 triumph. Anthony’s shooting was key, but coach Mike Woodson was quick to highlight the defensive effort. “The fourth quarter, we just defensively, we picked up,” he said. “We kept getting stop after stop and then we would rebound the ball and get it up and our offense began to flow like old times. It was kind of nice to see.” The scene was much different from Game 1, when the Knicks were outworked on the inside and outscored 59-38 in the middle two quarters. Stoudemire went through a full-contact four-on-four session on Thursday and will help off the bench.

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana lost Games 3 and 4 in Atlanta during the first round by an average of 16 points but had no trouble picking things back up in its own building. The Pacers won their three home games in the first round by 18.3 points and accomplished what they needed by taking a game in Madison Square Garden and grabbing homecourt advantage against the Knicks. Indiana committed 21 turnovers that led to 32 points in Game 2 and was outscored 52-40 in the paint after controlling that area in Game 1. “I like where we are,” Hibbert told reporters. “We were right there most of the game. But we gave them a sliver of hope late in the third, and obviously they’re so explosive. Obviously, a split is great.”

TRENDS:

* Knicks are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win.
* Pacers are 0-5 ATS in their last five Saturday games.
* Over is 6-0 in Pacers’ last six home games.
* Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. New York G J.R. Smith is 15-for-57 over the last four games.

2. Pacers F Paul George matched a season high (regular and playoffs) with seven turnovers in Game 2.

3. Anthony struggled to 7-for-21 from the field in his lone regular season appearance at Indiana.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (-5, 186.5)

Best-of-seven series tied 1-1.

The Memphis Grizzlies had to settle for a split in Oklahoma City after letting a Game 1 lead get away and look to go on top in the Western Conference semifinal series when the Thunder visit in Saturday’s Game 3. Memphis rebounded from the devastating fourth-quarter collapse in the opener to notch a 99-93 victory in Game 2. Oklahoma City needs to split the two road games in order to regain the homecourt advantage.

Thunder star Kevin Durant averaged 35.5 points, 13 rebounds and 7.5 assists over the first two games as Oklahoma City continues to adjust to not having standout guard Russell Westbrook (knee). Splitting the contests at home was disappointing to Durant, but he doesn’t see it as an obstacle that can’t be overcome in a seven-game series. “I don’t think we’ve fallen off track,” Durant said. “We dug ourselves a hole. We’ve just got to go in there and worry about the next game and take it a possession at a time.” Memphis went 3-0 at home in the first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers and has won 17 of its last 18 home games.

TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE THUNDER: You would think Durant would be requesting more help from his teammates after his two big games in this series. But the player who has averaged 35.5 points over his last six playoff games is calling on himself to pick up the pace. “I always can do more,” Durant said. “I’ve got to put my teammates in better positions to score. I turned the ball over some where I thought I could have made better passes, shot some shots (where) I should have drove or should have got closer. But I always can be better.” Durant has struggled from 3-point range in the postseason. He is 3-of-11 against the Grizzlies and 28.3 percent in Oklahoma City’s eight playoff games.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Point guard Mike Conley is often the third wheel behind post players Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol but he was the definitive star of Game 2. Conley had 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists and drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:58 to play. His emergence as a go-to player looking to take pressure shots picked up after Memphis dealt Rudy Gay to Toronto in late January. Gay’s departure left the Grizzlies shy of players willingly to take the big shots and Conley hasn’t been shy about looking for the hoop in stressful situations. Conley is averaging 20.5 points over the last four games.

TRENDS:

* Thunder are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games.
* Grizzlies are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games.
* Over is 10-2 in Thunder’s last 12 Saturday games.
* Underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Memphis had 13 steals in Game 2, five from defensive standout Tony Allen.

2. Thunder reserve G Derek Fisher is 15-of-23 from 3-point range over his past five playoff games.

3. Gasol is averaging 22 points and shooting 59.3 percent from the field in the series.

The Grizzlies Return Home After Winning Game 2

Western Conference Playoffs Second Round
Game 3 - Series tied 1-1
Tip-off: Saturday, 5:00 p.m. ET
Line: Memphis -3.5 Total: 187.5

The Memphis Grizzlies return home to face the Thunder on Saturday looking for a win in order to go up 2-1.

The Oklahoma City snuck away with Game 1 but were unable to defeat the Grizzlies in their second home game. The Grizzlies won the game 99-93 behind a stellar performance from Mike Conley, who had 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. To start this playoffs, the Grizzlies have gone 7-1 ATS while the Thunder are just 3-5. The Grizzlies were the underdog in Game 2, but that will not be the case when they head home, where they were 22-18-1 ATS during the regular season. In Game 2, the Grizzlies outworked the Thunder on the boards as they out-rebounded them by eight. Memphis was able to get 16 offensive rebounds in the game which was a huge difference maker. The Thunder were also careless with the basketball as they committed 19 turnovers in the game.

The Oklahoma City Thunder were right there at the end of Game 2, but just couldn’t put it together in the final three minutes of the game. Kevin Durant played an amazing game and put the Thunder on his back for the 43 minutes he played. Durant finished the game with 36 points (11-of-21 FG), 11 rebounds and nine assists. He did, however, miss an open three late in the game after freeing himself with a spectacular pump fake. Kevin Martin couldn’t get himself going in this game, as he scored just six points (2-of-11 FG) in 29 minutes. The only help Durant got offensively came from 38-year old Derek Fisher. Fisher played 26 minutes for Scott Brooks’ team and he scored 19 points (6-of-9 FG, 4-of-5 3PT) while hitting a number of clutch threes. The Thunder are going to need more out of Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins in this series. The two combined for just 15 (6-of-16 FG) points and 11 rebounds in the game.

After a tough loss in Oklahoma City in Game 1, the Grizzlies got right back at it with a 99-93 victory in Game 2. Mike Conley played one of the best games of his career, finishing with 26 points (11-of-22 FG, 2-of-7 3PT), 10 rebounds and nine assists. He hit a huge three late in the fourth quarter to take the lead for Memphis and then a deep two to put the game away. Marc Gasol also had a big game, as he dominated on both sides of the ball with 24 points (8-of-13 FG), five rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block. Despite missing two crucial free throws in the fourth quarter, Zach Randolph also had himself a good game. He was relentless on the boards with four offensive rebounds and he finished the game with 15 points (6-of-12 FG), eight rebounds and three assists. Tony Allen played the same lock down defense he has his whole career as he had five steals despite playing just 23 minutes due to foul trouble.

New York Looks to Steal Back a Win in Indiana in Game 3

Eastern Conference Playoffs Second Round
Game 3 - Series tied 1-1
Tip-off: Saturday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: Indiana -4.0 Total: 184.0

After stealing Game 1 in New York, the Pacers head back to Indiana on Saturday to take on the Knicks in a 1-1 series.

The New York Knicks had to deal with a lot of media criticism after a poor effort in Game 1 against the Pacers, but they responded with an impressive victory in Game 2. New York outscored Indiana by 20 points in the fourth quarter, going on to win the game 105-79. The series is now tied at 1-1 both SU and ATS. The Knicks are winless in their last three games in Indiana, who were 22-19 ATS when playing at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in the regular season. New York was a solid road team ATS, going 21-19-1 in the regular season. Towards the end of Game 2, Raymond Felton tweaked his ankle. Felton was waving off head coach Mike Woodson when he tried to make a substitution for him, but he ended up coming out. Felton said that he should be ready to go in Game 3. Amar’e Stoudemire is also expected to play for New York after missing the past couple of months after a procedure on his knee.

The New York Knicks came out in Game 2 with a lot of heart after being called out for a miserable Game 1 effort. Carmelo Anthony played his best game of the playoffs so far, scoring 22 points in the second half for the Knicks, who desperately need him. Anthony finished the game with 32 points (13-of-26 FG, 2-of-5 3PT), nine rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. The Knicks second best player in the game was Iman Shumpert. Shumpert provide the Knicks with a ton of energy and ended with 15 points (7-of-11 FG), six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 29 minutes. Raymond Felton continued his hot playoff shooting with 14 points (5-of-9 FG, 2-of-2 3PT) in 27 minutes. One concern for New York has been the play of J.R. Smith. After a miserable performance in Game 1, J.R. was even worse in Game 2 as he finished with just eight points (3-of-15 FG) in 30 minutes.

After stealing Game 1 in New York, the Pacers got away from the game that won it for them. Indiana allowed the Knicks to play at a fast pace and it really hurt the Pacers, who are an interior based team. Paul George was one of the only noticeable players for Frank Vogel’s team, as he finished the game with 20 points (8-of-16 FG). George did, however, turn the ball over seven times. Indiana as a team turned the ball over 21 times, which is something that can not be done in the playoffs. David West was the Pacers second leading scorer and he only had 13 points (4-of-7 FG) in the game. The Pacers starting five has been playing big minutes in this series and they have gotten little production from their bench.

Three starters with 'over' value on the hill Saturday

Saturday's MLB schedule features three starters on the board that could be worth a look for over wagers. Why? Because their teams provide them with some of the best run support in the bigs.

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox, (6-0, 1.60 ERA)

Buchholz is coming off the least impressive outing of his otherwise unblemished 2013 season. The Texan lasted six innings giving up four earned runs and seven hits versus the Minnesota Twins. His last two starts have gone over the number and the Sox supply the righty with an outstanding six runs of support per game.

Boston hosts the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday. The Red Sox defeated the Jays 10-1 with Buchholz on the mound on May 1.

Jonathon Niese, New York Mets (2-3, 4.66 ERA)

The Mets lefty has been a great over wager this season. He goes into Saturday's start with a 6-1 over/under record. Any $100 bettor would be up $539.02 if they had taken the over on each of Niese's starts this season. His 4.66 ERA, plus the fact that the Mets give him 6.29 runs per start, makes him a solid play on the over.

Niese and the Mets are home to face the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday. He was excellent in his lone start versus the Bucs in 2012, notching the victory with one earned run in 7 2/3 innings of work.

Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers, (5-1, 2.56 ERA)

Darvish gets the second-most run support in the American League with 6.71 runs per game. Two of his previous three starts have gone over the number and he is coming off a deep, 127-pitch effort versus the Red Sox on May 5.

The Rangers continue their series versus the Houston Astros Saturday. Darvish opened the season with a 7-0 victory versus Houston on April 2. He pitched 8 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.

20* Thunder/Grizzlies ESPN Saturday No-Brainer on UNDER 188

I look for a defensive battle tonight between the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. The longer a series goes, the more familiar teams become with one another, and the harder it is to score points.

Memphis and Oklahoma City combined for 184 points in Game 1 and 192 points in Game 2 for an average of 188 combined points. Given my theory, I believe there is a ton of value in the UNDER in Game 3 Saturday.

Neither team really can run, which is a huge edge towards the UNDER. Oklahoma City is playing at a much slower pace without Russell Westbrook, while Memphis is a half-court team at nature, and it will control the tempo playing at home tonight.

I look for a similar final score to the Memphis/LAC match-up in Game 3 of Round 1. The Grizzlies won that game 94-82 for 176 combined points. Memphis is scoring 94.1 points/game and allowing 87.2 points/game at home this season for a combined average of 181.3 points/game.

This play falls into a system that is 51-26 (66.2%) to the UNDER over the last 5 seasons. It tells us to bet the UNDER on any team (OKLAHOMA CITY) - in a playoff series which is tied, a good team (60% to 75%) playing a team with a winning record.

Oklahoma City is 12-4 to the UNDER revenging a same season loss vs opponent this season. The Thunder are 17-3 to the UNDER after playing 2 consecutive home games this season. Memphis is 11-1 to the UNDER after playing 2 consecutive games as a road underdog over the last 2 seasons. Take the UNDER in this game Saturday.

15* Knicks/Pacers ABC Saturday ANNIHILATOR on Indiana -4

The Indiana Pacers are highly motivated for a victory in Game 3 after getting blown out in Game 2. They stole Game 1, and then proceeded to not show up in Game 2 because they were simply satisfied with taking home-court advantage from the Knicks.

That blowout in Game 2 will get their attention, and Indiana will be refocused and playing with a chip on its shoulder Saturday. The Pacers are one of the best home teams in the league this season, going 33-11 while outscoring opponents by 8.5 points/game. Indiana won its first three home playoff games over the Atlanta Hawks by 17, 15 and 13 points.

New York is expected to get Amare Stoudemire back in the line-up in this one, and he's likely to play 10-15 minutes. Stoudemire has been a huge plague on this team since Carmelo Anthony joined, and the Knicks for whatever reason struggle with him on the floor.

This play falls into a system that is 70-36 (66%) ATS since 1996. It tells us to bet on home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (INDIANA) - in a game involving two average shooting teams (43.5-45.5%) after 42+ games, good rebounding team (+3 to +5.5 reb/game) against an average rebounding team (+/-3 reb/game).

Mike Woodson is 4-15 ATS in road games in all playoff games in all games he has coached since 1996. Frank Vogel is 34-20 ATS off a road loss as the coach of Indiana. The Pacers are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a SU loss of more than 10 points. The home team has won six of the last seven meetings with Indiana's Game 1 win in New York being the only exception. Roll with the Pacers Saturday.

15* MLB Saturday Early ANNIHILATOR on New York Mets -109

The New York Mets are showing solid value as a small home favorite over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday. They have a huge edge on the mound in this one, but that's not being reflected in this line like it should be.

Jon Niese has been at his best at home this season for New York, going 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in four home starts. Also, Niese is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three career starts against Pittsburgh, and his teams are 3-0 in those games having never lost.

Francisco Liriano makes his season debut for the Pirates today, and he is simply getting way too much respect from oddsmakers. In his last two seasons, Liriano has gone 9-10 with a 5.09 ERA in 2011, and 6-12 with a 5.34 ERA in 2012. He's clearly washed up.

Niese is 12-2 (+11.9 Units) against the money line when playing on Saturday in his career. His teams are winning 6.2 to 2.4 on average in this spot. The Pirates are 0-4 in their last 4 games as an underdog. The Mets are 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a left-handed starter. New York is 4-0 in Niese's last 4 starts as a favorite. Roll with the Mets Saturday.

15* MLB Saturday No-Doubt Rout on Boston Red Sox -1.5 (+100)

Clay Buchholz is out to send a message to Toronto Saturday. It was Blue Jays broadcaster Jack Morris last week that accused Buchholz of throwing a spitball, which certainly hurt the pitcher's reputation.

That came after Buchholz pitched 7 shutout innings of a 10-1 victory over Mark Buehrle and the Blue Jays. That dominant start was nothing new for the right-hander, who has simply been mowing down the competition this season.

Buchholz is 6-0 with a 1.60 ERA and 1.026 WHIP in seven starts this season. The Red Sox are 7-0 in those games, winning five by 2 runs or more. Buchholz improved to 9-4 with a 2.36 ERA and 1.127 WHIP in 15 career starts against the Blue Jays.

Mark Buehrle is simply washed up and stands no chance of keeping Toronto competitive in this one. The left-hander is 1-2 with a 7.03 ERA and 1.561 WHIP in seven starts this season. Buehrle is 7-9 with a 4.75 ERA and 1.454 WHIP in 20 career starts against Boston.

Boston is 13-2 (+11.4 Units) against the money line vs. teams outscored by opp by 0.5 or more runs/game on the season this season. It is winning by 2.8 runs/game in this spot. Buchholz is 18-3 (+13.1 Units) against the money line as a favorite of -110 or higher over the last 2 seasons. Boston is winning by 2.6 runs/game in this situation. Bet the Red Sox on the Run Line Saturday.

15* MLB Run Line PLAY OF THE DAY on Detroit Tigers -1.5 (-104)

The Detroit Tigers will have no problem winning by two-plus runs Saturday given the edge they have on the mound in this one. I fully expect you to be counting your chips by the end of the 5th inning ladies and gents.

Detroit gives the ball to 2011 AL Cy Young & AL MVP winner, Justin Verlander Saturday. The right-hander continues to be arguably the best starter in the league this season, going 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA and 1.101 WHIP through seven starts, including 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA and 0.952 WHIP in his last three.

Ubaldo Jimenez has been atrocious once again in 2012 as he continues to prove that he was one of the worst trades in Cleveland history. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 6.37 ERA and 1.314 WHIP through six starts this season for the Indians.

Jimenez is 4-7 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.526 WHIP in 13 career starts against the Tigers. In his last two starts at Detroit, Jimenez has given up 10 earned runs over 12 2/3 innings in 1-7 and 1-6 losses, respectively.

Verlander is a perfect 13-0 (+13.0 Units) against the money line in home games in night games over the last 2 seasons. The Tigers are winning in this spot 4.8 to 1.7, or by an average of 3.1 runs/game. Bet Detroit on the Run Line Saturday.

15* MLB Saturday Mound Mismatch on Philadelphia Phillies -101

The Philadelphia Phillies have a big edge on the mound tonight over the Arizona Diamondbacks, and they should not be an underdog as a result. After losing the first two games of this series, and three straight overall by exactly one run each, the Phillies will be highly motivated for a victory tonight.

I look for them to bounce back with a win behind ace Cliff Lee. The left-hander has been dominant this season, going 3-2 with a 3.26 ERA and 1.067 WHIP in seven starts, including 2-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 0.828 WHIP in four road starts.

Trevor Cahill is off to a fast start to the season for Arizona, but he's being overvalued as a result. There's no question in my mind that we'll be backing the better starter in Lee, who is 3-1 with a 3.50 ERA and 0.889 WHIP in five career starts against Arizona.

The Phillies are 17-4 in Lees last 21 road starts vs. a team with a winning record. Philadelphia is 4-0 in Lee's last 4 starts as an underdog. The Diamondbacks are 0-5 in Cahill's last 5 starts vs. National League East. Take the Phillies Saturday.

15* MLB Saturday Undervalued Underdog on Miami Marlins +175

Can you believe that the Miami Marlins have the edge on the mound Saturday, yet they are nearly a 2-to-1 dog to the Los Angeles Dodgers? What's more, the Dodgers have lost eight straight coming into this one, yet they are getting this much respect from oddsmakers.

I'll gladly gobble up this value and back the Marlins at an excellent price. Kevin Slowey is arguably the single-most underrated starter in the league to this point, going 1-2 with a 1.81 ERA and 0.940 WHIP in seven starts. He's 1-1 with a 0.98 ERA and 0.873 WHIP in three road starts as well.

Hyun-Jin Ryu has been solid for Los Angeles, but his numbers pale in comparison to Slowey's. Ryu is 3-2 with a 3.71 ERA and 1.214 WHIP in seven starts this season for the Dodgers.

Los Angeles is 0-8 in May games this season. Miami is 25-14 (+14.5 Units) against the money line in road games in May games over the last 3 seasons. The Dodgers are 0-7 (-11.4 Units) against the money line in home games vs. a bad bullpen that blows 38% or more of their save opportunities this season. Roll with the Marlins Saturday.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa at Villa Park

At this point in the season, we decided to revisit our value picks series for this weekend’s soccer picks. Due to popular demand, we’ve asked our Director of European Football, Mr. Ahmed, to take a look at the upcoming fixtures in England, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

Upon reviewing the odds, he decided to offer a pick for all members and non-members out of the English Premier League

1. Chelsea to win at 1.847
Okay, so a 100 unit wager only returns a profit of 84.7 units, but this is a simulation analysis special. Chelsea is 65.9 percent to win the game at Villa Park. Fernando Torres started in midweek, so Demba Ba is likely to return. Also, Lampard was rested against Spurs, so he should be in the starting eleven. When Lampard starts, Lampard usually scores—from the spot or otherwise.

Also, John Terry has been sitting the past couple matches, so the captain is probably due for a run in the park. The computer says Chelsea has value up until 1.518, and the line has already moved since starting at 1.962. Hazard is questionable, but Mata and Oscar should combine with Moses to form an attacking trident behind Ba.

With the Blues looking to wrap up a Champions League top four finish, motivation is on the menu against the Villains. Villa is coming off back-to-back wins, but Norwich and Sunderland are nowhere near the caliber of Chelsea.

Villa may appear safe from the drop, but that little bit of cushion may lead to complacency.

Penguins at Islanders: What bettors need to know

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders (+155, 6)

Pittsburgh leads series 3-2.

Sidney Crosby and John Tavares have been elite figures on the ice - so it's no surprise that the two joined Washington superstar Alex Ovechkin as finalists for the Hart Trophy. Crosby can get the better of Tavares in the postseason should the Pittsburgh Penguins eliminate the eighth-seeded New York Islanders in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Top-seeded Pittsburgh will have a chance to do precisely that with a victory in Game 6 Saturday - or, if necessary, at home in Game 7 on Sunday.

Crosby collected a goal and an assist in the Penguins' 4-0 victory in Game 5 Thursday. Pittsburgh's captain has showed little sign of rust since missing over a month with a broken jaw - scoring three goals and setting up five others in four games. Tavares has two goals and as many assists in the first-round series.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN, MSG-PLUS, ROOT

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Tomas Vokoun made his presence felt in his first postseason appearance since 2007. Replacing an ineffective Marc-Andre Fleury, the 36-year-old Vokoun registered his second career playoff shutout by turning aside 31 shots Thursday. Vokoun has dominated the Islanders in 2013, posting a 4-0-0 mark with a slim 0.69 goals-against average and impressive .977 save percentage.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS: While the situation is far from ideal, coach Jack Capuano isn't outwardly stressing his team's plight. "We've been in these must-win situations before, and our guys have responded pretty well," Capuano told the team's website. "We're at home, hopefully we'll have that barn rocking here (Saturday) again like we had the previous two games that we can feed off." Capuano also showed confidence in Evgeni Nabokov, who was pulled in Game 5 after yielding four goals. The veteran Russian netminder has allowed at least four tallies in four of the five games in the series.

OVERTIME:

1. Pittsburgh is 7-for-20 on the power play in the series, while New York is 2-for-17.

2. Islanders D Andrew MacDonald suffered a broken left hand in Game 4 and will miss the remainder of the playoffs.

3. Penguins C Evgeni Malkin and RWs Pascal Dupuis and Jarome Iginla each notched an assist in Game 5 to extend their respective point streaks to six contests.

TRENDS:

* Islanders are 6-2 in their last 8 home games.

* Over is 4-1 in Penguins last 5 games playing on 1 days rest.

* Over is 8-3-1 in Islanders last 12 home games.

* Over is 5-0-1 in the last 6 meetings in New York.

NASCAR betting: Bojangles' Southern 500 preview

Nicknamed "Too Tough To Tame," Darlington Raceway always provides a fast and exciting race on Mother’s Day weekend. The 1.37-mile oval is the original superspeedway and has over a 60-year racing history.

Here's our Sprint Cup Series preview and odds for Saturday's race:

Favorite: Kyle Busch +500

Busch was the youngest driver to ever win at Darlington in 2008 (23 years, 8 days). He ranks fourth out of 49 drivers over the past eight seasons with an average place of 10, has two top-fives to his credit and four top-10 finishes.

Live dog: Jeff Gordon +1,200

Gordon's seven wins at this track is the most among active drivers and he ranks first out of 49 drivers with an average place of 8.3. The veteran also boasts 18 top-fives and 21-top 10s at Darlington.

Long shot: Regan Smith +15,000

Smith is fresh off a Nationwide win at Talladega and now gets to race at his self-proclaimed “favorite track.” Smith has a win at Darlington to his credit (2011) and finished 14th in the Sprint Cup event last season. Smith is the only driver who is entered in this race that scored his first career Sprint Cup victory at the track.

Key stat:

The race winner at Darlington has started from the pole 19 times, but no driver has won a race from the starting position since Dale Jarrett did it in 1997.

Notable quotable:

“You can’t really pass there. It’s so difficult. So you run your laps until you get to a pit stop and try to get your guys to have a good stop for you so you can jump a couple of guys. Pit stops become really important there, and track position and trying to stay up front.” – Kyle Busch on racing Darlington.

Rays riding longest over streak of MLB season

The Tampa Bay Rays might not be such a hot moneyline bet in 2013, but the over has been on fire in their games recently.

Tampa Bay has played over the total in 13 straight games heading into Friday, which is the longest over streak in the majors this season. This stretch started versus the Chicago White Sox on April 26.

Friday's game featured a total of eight and Tampa defeated the San Diego Padres 6-3 to move to 13 straight played over the total.

The Rays continue a three-game home set with the San Diego Padres Saturday. The total for the game currently sits at eight.

The Oakland Athletics had put together a string of nine games that had gone over the total earlier this season, but Tampa Bay has made that look like child's play. A $100 bettor would be up $1,258.72 if they had wagered the over on the Rays' previous 13 games.

The perfect storm of run scoring and a failure to prevent foes from crossing the plate is fueling the streak of high scores. The Rays have averaged 6.3 runs per game while allowing 5.5 rpg from opponents.

Note: The Atlanta Braves are on a seven-game over streak heading into their game Saturday.

Carmelo Anthony was 13-26 in Game 2 after shooting 35-95 (36.8%) from floor in his first four games vs Indiana this year; JR Smith is 15-51 in three losses vs Pacers, 15-36 in three New York Ws- he might see his playing time cut here, since he hasn't been productive. Knicks get Amare Stoudemire back here; not sure how he'll affect their chemistry. Indana needs to keep Anthony under 40% from floor to win. Eight of last 12 Knick games stayed under the total; 12 of last 16 Indy games went over. New York lost 81-76/125-91 in its two visits to Conseco this year, with Pacers leading 74-44 at halftime of Knicks' last visit here.

Memphis won five of last six games, losing by hoop in Game 1; Martin reverted to 2-11 from floor in 29 unproductive minutes, failing to give Oklahoma City a scoring threat to compliment Durant. Last four series games were decided by six or less points. Thunder PG Westbrook is out for this series, which puts onus on vet PG Fisher and BC alum Jackson, who has four turnovers in 60 minutes in series. 17 of last 22 Thunder games stayed under the total. Six of last eight Memphis games went over the total. Oklahoma City covered four of last five as an underdog.

Grizzles -5 over Thunder
I think the line in this game really says it all. Vegas has no confidence in the Thunder being able to win this game. If you watched OKC all they do is give the ball to Durant. Memphis is geared up to win a title. This team really has no flaws and plays the game the correct way. Without Westbrook the Thunder just do not have enough juice. I would really be shocked if Memphis does not win this game by double digits. Take the Grizzles

Mets -110 over Pirates
Niese/Liriano
Francisco Liriano will make his season debut today coming off a broken arm. This is his non throwing arm, but I don't expect him to get worked that hard today. John Niese has been up and down this year, but he pitches well at home and has great numbers when facing the Pirates. Take the Mets.

Oakland (Parker) at Seattle (Mauer) (-105) 9:10 PM ET

5* Seattle (Mauer) (-105)
In this game, we come right back with Seattle against an Oakland team who is in a world of hurt. A weak opening schedule afforded the As an opportunity to begin the season 12-4. Since that time, they are on negative slides of 6-15 and 0-5. That includes 3-11 away, games in which they have totaled just 48 runs. Neck pain has negatively impacted the performance of Parker allowing his pitches to drift upward in the strike zone. The proof is in the pudding. Parker is 1-5 with a 7.34 ERA and 1.98 WHIP. He is also just 1-2 with a 5.94 ERA vs. Seattle. Mauer is little better with a 6.07 ERA. But the current form of Seattle, which has seen them go 9-4 and 6-2 of late, combines with a dominant edge in bullpen index of 175-135 to make this worth a small play.

5-Unit Play. Take 'Under' 8.0 Philadelphia at Arizona (5 p.m., Saturday, May 11)

This is my Game of the Week and this one should be like last night's 3-2 game. We have two great pitchers on the mound today and this total is a full run too high. Cliff Lee is a former Cy Young winner and has just a 3.26 ERA on the season. His team needs a big performance so they can snap out of this losing streak. Trevor Cahill has been great for Arizona. He has a 1.80 ERA in his last three starts and just a 2.80 ERA on the season. His sinker is working and he will keep this Phillies lineup in the park. The Phillies are one of the worst hitting teams in the league and they are struggling to score runs. Arizona is 14-21 against the total this year and has been a great 'under' team. I think that this one is going to be another tight, low-scoring game. I won't worry about who wins but will go with the 'under' here.

2-Unit Play. Take #928 Seattle (-105) over Oakland (10 p.m., Saturday, May 11)

The A's have lost five straight and they are not playing good baseball. Seattle can pass the A's in the standings this weekend and after a 6-2 win last night Seattle wants to come back with another one today. The A's are just 2-7 in their last nine games and the home team has won six of eight in this series. Seattle is going with young Brandon Maurer today and he has revenge against this A's team. They hit him for six runs in his MLB debut on April 4. Maurer has been pretty good in his last four starts with three quality starts. I am going with the home team here.

Game: Miami at Los Angeles Dodgers (9:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 runs +110 (runline)

Last year was supposed to be a breakout season for the Marlins. They opened a new stadium with a roster chock full of high-quality free agents, but the season never got off the ground, and was a total bust. Now the free agents are gone, and the roster is full of rookies, and inexperienced players, and the 11-25 record shows it. They have won multiple games in a row just twice all season, and nine against a winning team. You can bet the Dodgers will come out steaming after suffering the loss to the lowly Marlins last night at home. The Marlins have scored 5 runs or more just eight times all season, and in their first seven have been outscored in their next game by a 36-16 count, or by 3 runs per game. Take the Dodgers on the runline.

My 10* LEGEND Play is on OKC/Mem Over at 5:05 ET.
The Grizzlies have had three days off in their series with the Thunder, which represents the team's longest break since the All-Star weekend. What the team needs to guard against is, that all of a sudden, Memphis has become the ‘sexy’ pick to win the West. Why not, in Randolph and Gasol the Grizzlies own arguably the NBA’s best inside duo while PG Mike Conley is playing like an All Star. After losing the first two games of their fust round series at Staples Center to the Clippers, the Grizzlies won FOUR in a row to knock off the Clippers (all wins by double digits) and then won Game 2 of their series with the Thunder, to ‘steal’ the home court edge vs a Westbrook-less OKC team. Memphis almost took Gme 1 as well, losing only when it was outscored 6-1 in that game’s final minute. As far as bettors go, the Grizzlies have been near-perfect this postseason, as after getting blown out 112-91 in Game 1 in LA, Memphis has won its last SEVEN games (5-2 SU) ATS. That said, I’m sure Memphis watched the other Western Conference semifinal series last night and noticed that the Warriors, who had dominated the Spurs in the first two games of that series (although it was still one-all), got beat at home, 102-92. Talking about ATS perfection, Golden St entered last night’s game 8-0 ATS, so Memphis should be forewarned. I’m not counting out OKC even slightly but instead of “taking the points,” I’d much rather “go over” and here’s why. Sure, there is no Westbrook for OKC but take close note of the team's three road playoff games without him. The Thunder played Games 3, 4 & 6 in Houston and scored 104, 103 and 103 points (talk about consistency). Also note that in those three games, OKC converted on 10, 11 and 11 three-pointers (there’s that consistency again), shooting 39.7% from behind the arc (an outstanding percentage). Now I realize that Memphis is a terrific defensive team, one which entered the postseason with a defensive FG percentage of 43.5% (ranked 3rd-best) and a three-point percentage of 33.8% (2nd-best). However, Memphis has gotten to this point of the postseason due to some outstanding offensive play, despite the fact that the Grizzlies opened the postseason as the West’s lowest-scoring team among the eight playoff entrants, averaging just 93.4 PPG (the other seven teams all averaged in triple digits). However, note that Memphis averaged 104.8 PPG in winning the last four games vs the Clippers in the first round and averaged 95.0 PPG in the two games at OKC, despite shooting 66.1% from the free-throw line (shot 77.3% on the season), which included 19 missed free throws, in all. Gasol and Randolph have combined to average 38.5 PPG & 16.5 RPG on 53.7% shooting in the first two games, dominating their OKC counterparts Ibaka and Perkins, who have combined to average 11.0 & 11.5 on 25.0% shooting, in the first two games. Why would that domination not continue here, where the Grizzlies have won 16 of their last 17 home games? I expect Gasol and Randolph WILL continue to dominate! The first two games of this series finished with both teams in the 90s (Game 1 barely went under and Game 2 barely went over) but I’m looking for Memphis to be in triple digits in this one and for OKC to be right there with them. Go OVER!
Good luck...Larry
