Blue Jays scoring in bunches; dogs Friday in NY

The Toronto Blue Jays have won four straight games heading into Friday's matchup versus the New York Yankees. They've also taken seven of 10 dating back to May 5 against the Seattle Mariners.

Their bats appear to be waking up as they've scored at least 10 runs in three straight games and are averaging nine runs per game during the winning streak. The Jays are now tied for first in the American League with 53 home runs.

The Jays were the talk of the offseason as they revamped their lineup and starting rotation and found themselves 12/1 to bring the World Series trophy back to Canada.

Toronto will look to continue its winning ways as they open a weekend series versus New York at Yankee Stadium Friday. The Yankees are -163 favorites and will send Huroki Kuroda to the hill. The Jays will counter with lefty Mark Buehrle.

Senators at Penguins: What bettors need to know

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins (-190, 5.5)

Penguins lead best-of-seven series 1-0.

When they were at even strength, the Ottawa Senators more than held their own against the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins in the opener of their Eastern Conference second-round series. After allowing two power-play goals - and a short-handed one to boot - the seventh-seeded Senators will look to stay out of the penalty box and leave the Steel City with a split following Game 2 on Friday. Chris Kunitz and defenseman Paul Martin each scored with the man advantage and Pascal Dupuis tallied while his team was short-handed as Pittsburgh breezed to a 4-1 triumph on Tuesday.

The Penguins went 2-for-4 on the power play in Game 1 after going 7-for-21 in their first-round series versus the eighth-seeded New York Islanders. Ottawa is no slouch when it is shorthanded, killing off a league-best 88 percent of its opponent's power plays. "If we break even on the special teams battle, it gives us a good chance to win," Senators coach Paul MacLean said.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Jared Cowen struggled in Tuesday's setback as Martin's goal early in the first period deflected off the Ottawa defenseman and into the net. Cowen also had a key turnover behind his own goal which resulted in Malkin's tally. "Most of the things we're having trouble with are just mental fixes," Cowen told the Ottawa Citizen. "There's nothing we haven't seen before. In the playoffs, we tend to overanalyze things. Some things get blown up."

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Evgeni Malkin, who collected a goal and an assist in Game 1, joined Dupuis and Jarome Iginla with seven-game point streaks in the postseason. The reigning Hart Trophy winner, Malkin sits one point behind Boston's David Krejci for the NHL lead in the playoffs. Veteran Tomas Vokoun has certainly fared well since replacing Marc-Andre Fleury to start Game 6 in the first round. Vokoun, who made 35 saves on Tuesday, has stopped 101 of 105 shots en route to winning his last three starts.

TRENDS:

* Senators are 0-4 in the last four meetings.
* Senators are 1-5 in the last six meetings in Pittsburgh.
* Penguins are 40-12 in their last 52 home games.
* Under is 8-1 in Penguins’ last nine vs. a team with a winning record.

OVERTIME

1. Iginla has eight assists, leaving him one shy of his career high - set over the course of 26 games with Calgary during the 2004 playoffs.

2. Ottawa D Eric Gryba suffered an upper-body injury in Game 1. Should Gryba be unable to play, Andre Benoit is expected to be inserted into the lineup.

3. Pittsburgh has won all four meetings with Ottawa in 2013.

2 UNIT = Kansas City Royals @ Oakland Athletics - ROYALS TO WIN (-108)
Listed Pitchers: Shields vs Parker
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.85 units)

The Kansas City Royals took 2 of 3 vs Los Angeles this week to move to 20-17 on the year and 10-9 on the road. The Oakland Athletics dropped 2 of 3 making them just 2-8 over their last 10 games and they now sit 20-22 on the year and 10-10 at home. The Royals will send James Shield to the mound who is 2-3 on the season with a 2.48 ERA, .205 OBA and 0.97 WHIP. He has been consistently good allowing 3 earned runs against or fewer in 7 of 8 starts (with the other start being 4 ER). Over his last 5 starts he has allowed just 8 earned runs against getting through 6 or more innings in each. A's Jarrod Parker on the other hand is 2-5 with a 6.68 ERA, .321 OBA and 1.84 WHIP. Over his last 4 starts he has allowed 16 earned runs against. Pitching at home hasn't helped him at all as he is 1-3 with a 9.61 ERA at home this year and a WHIP just under 2 at 1.98. The Royals are coming off a series where they managed to score 22 runs in 3 games, while the A's have scored 22 runs in their last 7 games and have only scored more than 3 runs 3 times over their last 10 games. The A's are 1-5 in Parker's last 6 starts as an underdog and 1-4 in his last 5 home starts. I'm hoping on Kansas City to beat a struggling A's team behind Shields.

2 UNIT = Tampa Bay Rays @ Baltimore Orioles - OVER 8.5 RUNS (-117)
Listed Pitchers: Hellickson vs Hammel
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.71 units)

The Tampa Bay Rays have lost two straight after giving up 3 runs in the 9th last night vs Boston. Before that they had won 6 straight games scoring 38 runs over those 6 games (6.33 runs per game). The Orioles have lost 4 of their last 6 games and they've given up 6+ runs against in 4 of those 6 games. Over their last 10 games they've scored 50 runs (5 per game). Tonight Tampa Bay will send Jeremy Hellickson to the mound who has had his struggles this year. He is 1-2 with a 5.25 ERA, .251 OBA and 1.27 WHIP. Over this last 4 starts he has allowed 18 earned runs against, and his ERA over his past 3 starts is sitting at 7.02. Jason Hammel will take the mound for Baltimore and he is also struggling although he has a 5-1 record. His ERA is sitting at 4.93 with a .278 OBA and 1.47 WHIP. At home his ERA is 5.68 although he has just two home starts this year, and his ERA for his past three starts is 7.20. The team is 7-1 in games he has started, which just shows you how much run support the Orioles are giving him. Take note that these two teams have met 6 times already this year with totals of 16, 8, 9 in Baltimore and 9, 15, and 11 in Tampa Bay. Hellickson gave up 5 earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched vs Baltimore at the start of the season, and Hammels gave up 3 earned runs in 6 innings pitched in Tampa Bay early this year. Also note that the OVER is 9-0-3 in the Rays last 12 road games, 19-5-4 in their last 28 overall, and 9-2-1 in their last 12 games vs a starter with a WHIP over 1.30. The OVER is 5-0 in Hammels last 5 starts overall and 5-1-1 in his last 7 home starts dating back to last season. This season the OVER is 4-0-2 between these two teams, and I'm surprised to see a total at 8.5 for tonight's game. I'm on the OVER.

3-unit Play Take #919 Tampa Bay Rays (+105) over Baltimore Orioles (7:05pm ET) After a slow start to the season, the Tampa Bay Rays are finally starting to click. Despite dropping their last two games, they have won six of eight and are hitting the ball very well. They've average 5.9 runs per game over their last 17 contests and will look to keep it going against a struggling pitcher in Jason Hammel today. He has a 5-1 record on the season, but Hammel isn't pitching nearly as well as he did in 2012. His strikeout rate is down to 6.3 per nine innings from 8.6 last year. His walks are also up and he's not keeping the ball down like he has in the past. All of that has translated into a 4.93 ERA, which is a run and a half higher than last season. His career ERA is 4.78, so it's quite possible that last year was the aberration and that the Hammel were seeing this season is representative of the pitcher that he really is. I expect the Rays to jump on his early and for Jeremy Hellickson to pitch well enough to keep a dangerous Orioles lineup at bay. Take Tampa Bay here.

6-unit Play Take #925 Kansas City Royals (-110) over Oakland A's (10:05pm ET) Jarrod Parker hasn't been himself this season for the Oakland A's. He enters today's start at 2-5 with a 6.86 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in eight starts. His biggest problem has been his control, as he's walking 4.9 batters per nine innings and his strikeout rate has declined from last season. He's battled some neck injuries, which obviously is affecting him more than he is leading on. Today he goes up against a Royals team that is swinging the bats pretty well lately. In their last series in Anaheim, the Royals scored 22 runs as they took two of three from the Angels. Kansas City will also have their ace James Shields on the mound today and he probably won't need very much run support. Shields is one of the best in the American League and comes in with a 2.48 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in his first season with Kansas City. He's also great at going deep into games as he's averaging over seven innings per start. That makes it much easier for the Royals bullpen, which has some great arms at the backend. Until Parker shows that he's back to his form from last season, he's going to be on the fade list. With Shields going, you couldn't get a much bigger starting pitching edge for the Royals. Take Kansas City today as our 6-unit Game of the Month.

Pick: Chicago Cubs +120 (moneyline)

Not too much has gone right for the Mets this season, and despite the win yesterday, the Cubs have a better record. The Mets' offense has been brutal for quite some time, as they have produced 4 runs or less in 16 of their last 19 games, including 9 of their last 10. The Cubs' offense has been the most productive over their last five games where they have averaged 5.8 runs per contest. Harvey has come up aces for the Mets, but despite the fact that he has allowed 2 or fewer runs in seven of eight starts, the pen, and lack of offense has kept him out of the win column in each of his last four starts. The Mets are just 1-9 in their last 10 vs. a right-handed starter doesn't bode well for them here. Take the Cubs.

Sam Martin's 25* DIVISION GAME OF THE YEAR (15-5)!

Toronto Blue Jays @ New York Yankees May 17 2013 7:05PM
Play on: New York Yankees

25* AL East Game of the Year on NY Yankees. This is already the third time these pitchers have faced off against each other, with the Yankees winning 5-3 in Toronto (each pitcher didn't factor into the decision) and then New York won 5-3 in the Bronx (Kuroda earned the win, Buehrle the loss). We're going to back Kuroda and the Yankees to make it three straight in this pitching matchup, and we love going against Buehrle in this spot.

The two team start losses means Buehrle is now 1-9 with a 6.19 ERA against the Yankees in his career, even worse owning a 1-13 team start record in those 14 career meetings. Kuroda is 3-1 (4-1 team start record) against Toronto with a 3.82 ERA. That's some kind of history, and we look for those trends to continue considering Buehrle has allowed 19 runs (18 earned) in 22 2/3 innings of work away from home this season - good for a high 7.15 earned run average (four road starts). Yankees have won six of the seven meetings this year between both teams. Everything points to an easy Yankees victory and we'll back them with our highest 25* rating tonight. 25* AL East Game of the Year on NY Yankees.

Ottawa Senators (p) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (p) May 17 2013 7:35PM
Play on: Pittsburgh Penguins (p)

20* Puckline Play on Pittsburgh (-1.5 Goals). Great line value laying the goal and a half with Pittsburgh tonight, as the Penguins not only crushed Ottawa 4-1 to set the tone for this series, but continued their dominance over the Senators with their fourth win in as many chances against them. Penguins have won those four games by a combined eight goals and have held Ottawa to five goals scored in those four meetings. Pittsburgh beat the Islanders 5-0 in the opener last series but were shocked in a 4-3 loss in Game Two. That upset loss will be fresh in Pittsburgh's minds in this game and we don't expect them to be caught off guard again. Senators have done nothing in power play chances against Pittsburgh this year, converting just once in 17 chances. That includes 0-5 last night and if they can't score with a man-advantage we don't think they can stay close on the road. Pittsburgh now 21-7 on their home ice winning by 1.5 goals per game while Ottawa playing with poor history going 5-17 in Game Two's of a playoff series. Penguins on fire offensively scoring 4 or more goals in five straight and they take this one in a blowout. 20* Puckline Play on Pittsburgh (-1.5 Goals).

Sam Martin: Sam Martin's 20* MLB RUNLINE DEMOLITION (15-5)!

St Louis Cardinals (r) at Milwaukee Brewers (r) May 17 2013 8:15PM
Play on: St Louis Cardinals (r)

20* Runline Play on St. Louis (-1.5 Runs). St. Louis came through for us with a pair of runline winners in their last series against the Mets, and we'll back them on the runline once again tonight as they start a three-game home series against Milwaukee. Cardinals lost yesterday trying for the four-game sweep, scoring just two runs in a 5-2 loss. We backed them coming off their previous loss and they scored an easy 6-3 win, rebounding from a two-run, six hit effort with a six-run, 11-hit outburst.

We fully expect a similar offensive outburst tonight and he Cards will have full confidence going into this game against Wily Peralta as they already beat him up for six runs in just 4 1/3 innings earlier this month. St. Louis won that game 6-5, but we don't think the Brewers will come anywhere close to putting up that many runs tonight against Jamie Garcia.

Garcia has been fantastic here at home with a 2.93 ERA, and even better we catch him off a rare poor outing his last time out where he gave up five runs in six innings. That snapped a streak of three consecutive starts where he held the opposition to just one earned run each time out. Garcia shutout the Brewers over seven innings in his lone home start against them (April), and then on the road held Milwaukee to one run over 8 innings in a 10-1 blowout win (as an underdog). That's one run allowed over 15 innings against this team, and with Milwuakee losing 12 of their last 14 games overall, including just one run scored in each of their last two, we don't see them suddenly breaking out against a motivated pitcher like Garcia tonight. Cardinals run up the score and cover the 1.5-run spot with ease! 20* Runline Play on St. Louis (-1.5 Runs).

15* MLB Friday No-Doubt Rout on Philadelphia Phillies -115

Rarely will you get the opportunity to back Cliff Lee as this small of a home favorite against anyone. I'll take advantage tonight and back the veteran left-hander against the Cincinnati Reds Friday night.

Lee continues to prove that he's one of the best starters in the game. The former Cy Young winner is 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA and 1.076 WHIP through eight starts this season. He is coming off an awesome start at Arizona in which he pitched seven shutout innings of a 3-1 Phillies' victory.

Lee is 6-2 with a 3.91 ERA in 12 career starts against Cincinnati. He has been dominant in his last three starts against the Reds, going 1-0 with a 1.61 ERA while allowing just four earned runs in 22 1/3 innings.

The Reds are 2-7 in their last 9 games as a road underdog. Cincinnati is 1-4 in its last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Phillies are 38-18 in their last 56 meetings with the Reds, including 19-7 in their last 26 home meetings. Roll with the Phillies Friday.

15* MLB Friday Undervalued Underdog on Los Angeles Dodgers +125

The Los Angeles Dodgers are showing some of their best value of the season as a road underdog to the Atlanta Braves. They come in playing their best baseball of the season having won four of their last five games overall.

Hyun-Jin Ryu doesn't get the respect he deserves from oddsmakers because he's new to the league this year. The left-hander has gone 4-2 with a 3.40 ERA and 1.212 WHIP with 51 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings in 2013.

The Braves have lost five of their last six coming in. Paul Maholm is getting way too much respect from the books in the early going despite being just 4-4 with a 3.94 ERA on the season.

Maholm gave up six earned runs and 11 base runners over 4 1/3 innings last time out in a 1-10 loss to San Francisco. The left-hander is 1-5 with a 4.91 ERA and 1.527 WHIP in nine career starts against Los Angeles.

The Dodgers are 19-3 (+17.3 Units) against the money line vs. NL teams allowing 3.8 or less runs/game on the season over the last 2 seasons. The Braves are 0-7 in their last 7 when their opponent allows 2 runs or less in their previous game. Bet the Dodgers Friday.

15* MLB Friday Total ANNIHILATOR on Giants/Rockies UNDER 9.5

The books have set the bar way too high tonight in this NL West battle between San Francisco and Colorado. This is an overreaction from yesterday's 8-6 win by the Giants.

The two starters getting the ball tonight have been absolutely dominant. Madison Bumgarner is 4-1 with a 2.18 ERA and 0.932 WHIP in eight starts this season, including 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA and 0.646 WHIP in three road starts. Jorge De La Rosa is 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA and 1.213 WHIP in eight starts, including 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 0.667 WHIP in two home starts.

Both starters have been dominant against their opposition as well. Bumgarner is 6-3 with a 2.58 ERA in 12 career starts against Colorado with the UNDER going 7-4-1 in those contests. De La Rosa is 7-4 with a 3.06 ERA in 13 career starts against San Francisco with the UNDER going 8-5 in those games.

The UNDER is 5-0 in Bumgarner's last 5 road starts vs. a team with a winning record. The UNDER is 5-0 in Bumgarner's last 5 starts vs. National League West. The UNDER is 6-1 in De La Rosa's last 7 starts with the total set at 9.0-10.5. These three trends combine for a 16-1 system backing the UNDER tonight. Take the UNDER in this game Friday.

20* MLB Mound Mismatch GAME OF THE MONTH on Kansas City Royals -113

The Kansas City Royals have a massive edge on the mound over the Oakland A's tonight. They should be a much heavier favorite tonight because of it, and I'll gladly take advantage.

James Shields has proven to be the ace that the Royals hoped for when they signed him this offseason. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 0.966 WHIP in eight starts this season, including 1-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 0.783 WHIP in his last three.

Jarrod Parker has been atrocious this season for Oakland. The right-hander is 2-5 with a 6.86 ERA and 1.845 WHIP in eight starts, including 1-3 with a 9.61 ERA and 1.984 WHIP in four home starts.

Shield is 5-3 with a 4.08 WHIP in 12 career starts against Oakland. That includes a complete game shutout in his last start against the A's. Parker is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in one career start against Kansas City.

The A's are 0-6 in their last 6 vs. American League Central opponents. Oakland is 0-5 in Parker's last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The A's are 0-4 in Parker's last 4 starts as a home underdog. These three trends combine for a perfect 15-0 system backing Kansas City. Bet the Royals Friday.

15* MLB Late-Night BAILOUT on Washington Nationals -130

The Washington Nationals should be a much heavier favorite over the San Diego Padres tonight. They have a big edge on the mound with Gio Gonzalez over Burch Smith in this one.

Gonzalez hasn't been as dominant as he was last season, but he's still 3-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 1.200 WHIP with 47 strikeouts over 45 innings. The left-hander is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career start against San Diego, pitching six shutout innings of a 3-1 victory.

Rookie Burch Smith will get his second turn in the rotation with Clayton Richard on the disabled list. It didn't go well in Smith's major league debut as he allowed six runs and seven base runners before getting pulled after just one inning of work in an 8-7 loss to Tampa Bay.

Gonzalez is 13-2 (+10.4 Units) against the money line vs. poor power teams - averaging 0.9 or less HR's/game over the last 2 seasons. The Nationals are 17-5 in Gonzalez's last 22 road starts. The Nationals are 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in San Diego. Take Washington Friday.

929 HOU / 930 PIT OVER 8 Hilton (http://www.pregame.com/en/main/sports-betting-lines-odds/) double-dime bet

Analysis:The Astros have been a huge over team this season. The over has cashed 72 percent of the time during Houston's last 26 games.
Look for that trend to continue in a pitching matchup of Jordan Lyles versus Jeanmar Gomez. The over is 12-4-3 during Lyles' last 19 road starts.
Lyles has been a huge disappointment. He's been terrible ever since he's come to the majors and he's not doing the job this season with an 8.36 ERA. In his last start, he yielded eight runs and 11 hits in during four innings to the Rangers. Career-wise versu šs Pittsburgh, Lyles is 0-4 with a 7.77 ERA.
Gomez has been a pleasant surprise, make that shock, for the Pirates posting a 2-0 mark and 2.28 ERA. Gomez is helped coming from the DH-American League, but he's not nearly as good as he's recently shown. He had an 8.74 ERA during his last 10 starts last year with Cleveland.

Analysis:The Phillies are rested, home and have a hot Cliff Lee going against a rookie pitcher who is beginning to get exposed.

Lee has allowed just two runs and 11 hits in his last starts spanning 15 innings. He š is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA during his past five starts against the Reds.

The Reds had to go extra innings on Thursday to beat the Marlins in Miami while the Phillies were idle. They are going with rookie Tony Cingrani, who started fast with a sneaky delivery but the league is catching on to him.

Cingrani allowed six earned runs, including four homers, in his last two starts spanning 10 innings.

ML 916 CLE (-160) BetOnline (http://www.pregameaction.com/?page_id=7) vs 915 SEA single-dime bet

Analysis:Cleveland is in great form winning 14 of its last 18. Also in great form is Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez. He's given up just three runs and 10 hits while striking out 20 during his last three starts spanning 18 2/3 innings.
The Indians return home rested a šfter being idle on Thursday. The Mariners had to play the Yankees yesterday. That caused them to have more bullpen fatigue.
Seattle starter Brandon Maurer is being hit hard. He has a 5.97 ERA on the season and has surrendered seven runs, including three homers, during his last two starts spanning nine innings.
Seattle usually plays poorly in the first game of a series. They are 13-31 on Fridays.

OAKLAND A's UNDER 3.5 RUNS (@sportsbook.ag)
Big Game James Shields takes the ball for KC here & he has been spectacular this season. Very sharp command of his pitches and I love his almost 4-1 K/BB ratio. Oakland not hitting the ball of late, as over the last week, they have an anemic .216 .AVG & just a .277 .OBP. I really do not think getting Shields and his "stuff" will help these A's snap out of their team slump. I also like that these A's fair much better vs LH pitching, as Oakland really has been weak vs RH pitching this season (ranking 14th out of 15 A.L. teams in batting .AVG (.230) & 12th in .OPS (.690). The KC bullpen has been solid and a pleasant surprise for sure. I really like Shields to go deep in this game tonight & hand the ball over to the best arms in that KC bullpen.
