Pacers at Heat: What bettors need to know

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-7, 180.5)

Miami leads best-of-seven series 1-0.

The biggest concern the Indiana Pacers had before Game 1 was how they would match up when the Miami Heat went to a small lineup. Turns out that those concerns are still around. The Heat will be looking to take a 2-0 lead when they host the Pacers in Game 2 Friday. Indiana elected to leave 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert on the bench on the decisive play of overtime in Game 1, afraid Miami would spread the defense by running Chris Bosh wide.

Turned out the Heat did not need Bosh on the final play, but the Pacers definitely needed Hibbert, as no one was around to stop LeBron James’ hard drive to the rim on the game-winning bucket. “Obviously, with the way it worked out, it would have been better to have Roy in the game,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. “But you don’t know. If that happens, maybe Bosh is making a jump shot and we’re all talking about that. James ended up with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists but the Pacers showed that they will not be an easy team to bump off en route to a third straight appearance in the NBA Finals for the Heat.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE PACERS: Lost in the decision-making questions after Game 1 was the play of Indiana forward Paul George, who not only played solid defense on James most of the night but scored 25 of his 27 points in the second half and overtime. The All-Star buried a 32-foot 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime and calmly hit three free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Pacers a one-point lead. But the final play will be the one Indiana looks back at if it falls one win short in the series. Vogel’s idea was to put a switching lineup on the floor and force James to shoot a jumper, but the defense crept up too close on the inbounds pass. “I could see why coach wanted to take me out,” Hibbert said. “With 2.2 seconds left on the clock, they can throw it to Bosh and I’m over-committing in the paint and he can hit a jump shot. My mentality is always to protect the rim.”

ABOUT THE HEAT: James asserted before the series that Miami wasn’t just another team, but a great team. For much of the night on Wednesday, the Heat did in fact look like just another team, equally as good as the Pacers but not head-and-shoulders above. James went about proving himself right on that final play, when he drove toward the basket from above the 3-point line with such force that no one dared get in front of him before he was able to lay it off the glass just in front of the buzzer. “Two teams fought hard,” James said. “We were able to make one more play.” James actually made two driving layups in the final 10 seconds of overtime, the first putting the Heat up by two before George hit the three free throws. Miami struggled to space the floor (5-of-18 from 3-point range) and hit free throws (16-of-25) but got a huge boost off the bench from Chris Andersen, who provided 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting in 18 minutes.

TRENDS:

* Heat are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss.
* Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
* Pacers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
* Over is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The triple-double was James’ ninth in his postseason career, one behind Rajon Rondo and Larry Bird for third all-time.

2. Dwyane Wade (knee) played a postseason-high 41 minutes in Game 1 and scored 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He expects to be ready for Game 2.

3. The teams combined for 41 turnovers in Game 1.

Three pitchers with value for under bettors Friday

Following a relatively quiet Thursday in the major leagues, action picks up with a full slate of games Friday. There are a number of pitchers taking the hill who have been hot under picks in their most recent starts. Here is a look at three of them.

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (3-4, 2.57 ERA)

The under is 4-0 in Burnett's last four starts and is 8-2 in his 10 starts this season. The Bucs ace barely gets any run support at all this year as the offense provides him with just 2.60 runs per game.

Burnett gets the ball against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday.

Eric Stults, San Diego Padres (4-3, 4.05 ERA)

The under is 4-0 in the lefty's previous four starts and is 5-1 in his last six. Stults has allowed just seven earned runs in his last four outings. That's good enough for a sparkling 2.39 ERA in that stretch.

The Padres are on the road to face the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday.

Chris Tillman, Baltimore Orioles (3-2, 3.52 ERA)

Tillman has also been pitching well with the under going 4-0 in his last four starts. The O's supply Tillman with the 10th lowest run support total in the American League with just 3.56 runs per start.

Tillman and the Orioles are in Toronto to face the Blue Jays Friday.

Oakland A's pitching keying hot under run

Once upon a time, the Oakland Athletics were cashing in for over bettors at a record setting pace. The A's started the season with a blistering 25-7 O/U record and were as close to a sure thing as you could find.

Oakland has decided to flip the script on us and has posted an under record of 9-2 in its past 11 games, including two in a row heading into action Friday.

Pitching was an especially soft spot for Oakland early on, but oh how things have changed. The staff had been good for the first five games of their previous 11, but over the last six, the ERA is an amazing 1.69.

There is a good opportunity for some more under bets in the future as the A's open a three-game series versus the Houston Astros Friday. The Astros are 10th in the American League in batting average (.246) and 14th in on-base percentage (.306).

Pacers Seek Payback in Friday's Game 2 in Miami

Eastern Conference Finals
Game 2 - Miami leads series 1-0
Tip-off: Friday, 8:30 p.m. ET
Line: Miami -7, Total: 180.5

Indiana gets its second chance at a win on the road in Miami on Friday after LeBron James’ buzzer-beater spoiled the upset bid in Game 1.

The Pacers had everything going for them in Game 1, but they just couldn’t come away with a victory towards the end. With 2.2 seconds left in the overtime, Dwyane Wade fouled Paul George on a three-pointer. George made all three free throws to put Indiana up 102-101, but LeBron James answered by scoring on a layup a as time expired to give Miami a 103-102 victory in Game 1. The Pacers out-rebounded the Heat by a margin of five in the game (43-38), but they just could not stop James, who had a triple-double. Pacers head coach Frank Vogel elected to sit his best shot-blocker, C Roy Hibbert, on the game's final play leaving James a wide open driving lane to the basket. The Heat failed to cover and are now just 1-4 ATS in their past five home games, but Indiana hasn’t been much better on the road, going just 3-7 ATS in its past 10 games played away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Pacers have not been a good road team this season at 21-26 SU (23-24 ATS), which includes an 8-17 ATS mark (32%) when they visit a winning team. Miami, on the other hand, improved to 42-5 SU (89.4%) at home this season, but just 24-23 ATS at AmericanAirlines Arena. However, this club is an insane 46-3 SU (94%) and 31-18 ATS (63%) in its past 49 games since Feb. 3.

PF David West was the best player on the floor for the Pacers in Game 1, finishing with 26 points (11-of-17 FG) and five rebounds in 41 minutes. SF Paul George, who hit the three free throws that gave the Pacers a lead late, had a team-high 27 points (7-of-16 FG, 3-of-6 threes, 10-of-11 FT), five assists and four rebounds in 47 minutes. C Roy Hibbert also played a very good game for Indiana, finishing with 19 points (9-of-18 FG), nine rebounds and two blocks in 41 minutes. Indiana’s frontcourt was dominant in the game, but the backcourt will need to improve if this team is going to beat the Heat in this series. PG George Hill and SG Lance Stephenson combined to shoot just 4-of-19 FG and a combined 0-for-7 on threes. Although Hill had seven assists and five steals while Stephenson pulled down a game-best 12 rebounds with three steals, these guards must be able to hit shots, and luckily for them, it is unlikely they shoot that poorly again.

Erik Spoelstra drew up a play that got SF LeBron James one-on-one with Paul George with tons of open floor space with two seconds left and James got to the rim and finished with a layup as the buzzer expired. In the game, James did it all with 30 points (12-of-24 FG), 10 assists, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 47 minutes. SG Dwyane Wade also played one of his best games of the playoffs, finishing with 19 points (9-of-15 FG), six rebounds and five assists. Wade also played great defense as he finished the game with three steals before fouling out with 2.2 seconds left in overtime. PF Chris Bosh added 17 points and two blocks for Miami, as he anchored the defense down low that the Pacers had no trouble scoring on. Bosh will need to do a better job defensively in Game 2, otherwise the Heat will have to use PF Chris Andersen for more minutes. Andersen played an unbelievable Game 1, finishing with 16 points (7-of-7 FG) and five rebounds while not missing a shot.

INDIANA GM2 vs MIAMI GM2

20* Pacers/Heat Game 2 ANNIHILATOR on Indiana +7

The Indiana Pacers fought hard in Game 1 as they were covering the +8 number for all 53 minutes of that contest. They fell just short, losing on a last-second layup in overtime. This has been a resilient team all year, and I look for them to bounce back in Game 2.

I have no doubt the Pacers are capable of winning this game outright, I'm just taking the points for some insurance. As I stated with my play on Indiana in Game 1, this is simply a tough match-up for the Heat, and a great one for the Pacers.

Remember, the Pacers took a 2-1 series lead in the playoffs against Miami last year before losing the last three. Also, the Pacers have won two out of three against the Heat this season. They simply match up well with Miami considering Paul George and Lance Stephenson are two of the most underrated defenders in the league.

Both George and Stephenson can check Lebron James and Dwyane Wade as well as anyone in the NBA. Plus, the Pacers have a big edge inside with Roy Hibbert and David West. They can exploit Miami's biggest weakness, which is its interior play.

Indiana realizes it cannot afford to fall down 2-0 if it wants to win this series. That's why I look for it to lay everything on the line in Game 2, which will be enough to cover this lofty spread. According to some comments after the game, it's clear that the Pacers are more inspired by how close they came to winning in Game 1, rather than disappointed. So, I love the mindset of this team coming in.

Indiana is 47-22 ATS in road games after 2 straight games where opponent was called for 25 or more fouls since 1996. The Pacers are 23-13 ATS following a loss this season, and 18-7 ATS after a road loss. The Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games. The underdog is 29-14-1 ATS in the last 44 meetings. Bet the Pacers in Game 2 Friday.

Miami is 10-1 in playoffs, its only loss in Game 1 to Bulls; Heat is 2-4 as home favorite in playoffs; over is 3-2-1 in their home games. Indiana beat Miami twice in four meetings this season, with home team winning all four- they had Miami beat in Game 1, but inexplicably took Hibbert out of the game for the last sequence, James got an uncontested layup as the basket was left unprotected. Miami is 46-3 in its last 49 games; for them to lose a short series, everything has to go right for Indiana, which means giving games away isn't good. Heat won by 14-1 points in games played here. Pacers are 2-5 on road during playoffs, with four of five losses by 10+ points (3-4 as road underdogs).

Home teams are now 14-3 in this round of playoffs, under 9-5-3. Pittsburgh had a power play and 1-0 lead in last minute of only game they've lost in series- they're 6-1 against the Senators this year, winning 2-1/4-2/3-1/4-1/4-3/7-3. Penguins won five of last six games overall, with only 12 goals allowed since the switch to Vokoun in goal. Senators lost six of last seven visits here, losing last three, 4-2/4-1/4-3. Eight of last twelve series games went over total. Penguins are 3-10 on power play in two home games in series, 5-21 overall. Senators are 1-14 on power play in series. Penguins would like to win here, then hope the Rangers and Boston beat the hell out of each other for three more games.

Friday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins (-209, 5.5)

Pittsburgh leads best-of-seven series 3-1.

After coming under fire with his words, Daniel Alfredsson will look to ignite the Ottawa Senators with his actions Friday as they attempt to stave off elimination against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference second-round series. The captain recorded a goal and an assist Wednesday to reach the 100-point plateau of his postseason career, but top-seeded Pittsburgh breezed to a 7-3 triumph to seize a 3-1 advantage in the series. Alfredsson answered honestly when asked if it was feasible to believe that the seventh-seeded Senators can defeat the Penguins in three consecutive contests. "Probably not," the 40-year-old said. "I mean, with their depth and power play right now, you know, it doesn't look too good."

James Neal and Jarome Iginla scored two goals apiece and Norris Trophy finalist Kris Letang notched four assists in the Game 4 onslaught. Pittsburgh's high-octane offense is averaging 4.1 goals per game in the postseason - and is showing no signs of slowing down. With one more victory, the Penguins will advance to the conference finals for the first time since 2009.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Coach Paul MacLean was pretty direct with his assessment of Game 4 - and he needed just 13 seconds to get his point across. "Everything's right here," MacLean said as he held up the game sheet. "It's 7-3. We're going to Pittsburgh and we're coming to play. Good night." Anderson expects to be back between the pipes in Game 5. When asked if there would be a goaltending change, Anderson was confident in his response. "I don't think so. I don't know why there would be," said Anderson, who has been pulled twice in the series.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Home hasn't been a safe haven during Dan Bylsma's reign as coach of the Penguins. Pittsburgh is winless in six attempts when it has a chance to clinch a playoff series on home ice. "I don't think there's a reason for it, it's probably just coincidence," pesky Matt Cooke said. "The fourth win in a series is always the hardest to get. Their backs are against the wall and (that's when teams) are the most desperate and emotional." Pittsburgh last clinched a series at home in Game 5 of the 2008 Eastern Conference finals versus Keystone State rival Philadelphia.

TRENDS:

* Senators are 4-0 in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest.
* Under is 13-5 in Penguins last 18 home games.
* Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Pittsburgh.
* Senators are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in Pittsburgh.

OVERTIME:

1. The Penguins held a 3-1 series against the Senators during their playoff series in 2010. Ottawa won Game 5 in Pittsburgh before the Penguins finished off the Senators in Game 6.

2. After scoring six power-play goals in their first-round series, the Senators have tallied just twice with the man advantage versus the Penguins.

3. Should a Game 6 be necessary, it will be played at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

2 UNIT = Los Angeles Angels @ Kansas City Royals - ANGELS TO WIN (-111)
Listed Pitchers: Vargas vs Mendoza
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.80 units)

We are going to stick within the same series as I like the price we are getting on the Angels tonight. Los Angeles took the first game 5-4 last night as their big hitters continue to produce with the #1-4 hitters notching 6 hits and the team as a whole hitting 4 homeruns. Los Angeles has now won 5 in a row and are 20-27 after a very rough start to the season. The Royals have lost two straight and 6 of their last 7 overall dropping to 21-23 on the season. The Angels have scored 38 runs over their last 5 games compared to the Royals who have 20 over their last 5 and just 22 over their last 7. Tonight's starter for LA is Jason Vargas who is 3-3 with a 3.55 ERA, .273 OBA and 1.41 WHIP. In his last two starts he has pitched 14 innings giving up just 2 earned runs with 13 strikeouts. That includes 7 innings, 5 hits and 2 earned runs with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk vs Kansas City on the 14th of this month. Luis Mendoza will start for KC and he is 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA, .257 OBA and 1.36 WHIP. He has been solid over his last three starts allowing 3, 3, and 2 earned runs against over 6 innings of work in each, but with the way this Angels team is hitting right now I think we could see him have some struggles. Mendoza went 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs against the Angels on the 13th of May. Take note that the Angels are 4-0 in Vargas' last 4 starts and 4-1 in their last 5 road games, while the Royals are just 2-6 in Mendoza's last 8 starts and 0-5 in their last 5 home games. The Angels have had success in Kansas City over the years winning 31 of 44 meetings in KC. I'll take the hot bats of the Angels to keep it going tonight with a 6th straight win.

4-unit Play Take #964 San Francisco Giants (-145) over Colorado Rockies (10:15pm ET) The San Francisco Giants host the Colorado Rockies as the two teams begin a three-game set in AT&T Park this weekend. These teams met last week in Colorado and the Rockies took three of the four games in that series. However, the Rockies are a very tough team to beat in Coors Field, so I expect this series to be a complete 180 from last week. Both teams have identical 26-21 records overall, but the Giants are 17-8 at home this season while the Rockies are just 10-12 on the road. The Giants are also better than the Rockies in every phase of the game. They have the better starting pitcher today, the better bullpen, they play better defense and they also have a better offense after taking into account park effects. Tim Lincecum is the Giants starter and he's looked really good overall despite a few rough outings. His peripheral numbers have improved from last season and he's slowly getting back to his old form. Tyler Chatwood goes for the Rockies and he's been a great bet against guy during his career. He's struggled with his confidence and I've never really liked his stuff very much. This game has the Giants written all over it.

4-unit Play Take #966 Toronto Blue Jays (+100) over Baltimore Orioles (7:05pm ET) The Toronto Blue Jays haven't lived up to expectations so far in 2013, but the tide is starting to turn. The Jays have won seven out of 10 games and the offense is really starting to click. During those 10 contests, they have averaged 6.4 runs per game against some pretty good pitching staffs. Today they'll go up against right-hander Chris Tillman of the Orioles. Tillman comes in with a 3.52 ERA in nine starts, but he's been fortunate. His strand rate is very high at 83% and he's walking more than a batter more per nine innings than he did last season. It's time for some regression and a dangerous Blue Jays lineup should be able to arrange that. The Jays go with a rookie making his debut today in Sean Nolin. The young lefty has put up exceptional numbers in the minor leagues. He'll be tough for the Orioles to face since they've never seen him and probably won't have much of a book on him yet. Toronto is rolling and I think they get the job done today as a home underdog.

5-Unit Play. Take 'Under' 9.0 Cleveland at Boston (7 p.m., Friday, May 24)

This is my MLB Game of the Week. I think that this one is going to be low scoring and several of the big hitters that I bet with feel the same way. In fact, some early sharp action actually moved this game from 9.5 to 9.0. And it could go lower. I think that Justin Masterson has been great this year. He's looked great and thrown well and I like his stuff. Remember, he was a Red Sock. They got rid of him to Cleveland and now he will want some revenge against his former team. These are two very high scoring teams. And the public is all in on this one going 'over' after last night's big offensive game. But I think the public is going to get burned. Both of these teams are due for a letdown game. Especially Cleveland after a big win last night in Terry Francona's return and after their big series with Detroit. John Lackey was a great pitcher once. He has not been good in Boston. But he has just a 3.12 ERA in his last few starts and has been looking better. I think it is a pitching duel between Masterson and Lackey and this one will stay under by a couple runs.

2-Unit Play. Take 'Under' 8.0 Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati (7 p.m., Friday, May 24)

This Cubs lineup is really struggling. They can't score runs and are one of the worst in baseball. That will continue against this great Reds pitching staff. The Reds are No. 3 in ERA and No. 1 in WHIP and Bronson Arroyo is due for a big outing. He is a veteran pitcher and has thrown 15 straight scoreless innings. He will extend that streak today and is hot right now. Scott Feldman has been really good for the Cubs as well. He has been their best pitcher and the 'under' is 4-0 in his last four road starts. The 'under' is 6-2 when Arroyo faces the Cubs. Take the 'under' here.

Game: St. Louis at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers +105 (moneyline)

While the St. Louis Cardinals are off and running to a 30-16 start, the LA Dodgers have been an underachieving team with a disappointing 19-26 start. Chris Capuano, after starting the season in the pen for the Dodgers, was elevated to the rotation because of injuries. Capuano has been a streaky pitcher over his career. When he is in a rut, he tends to stay there, but when he pitches well he often strings together several strong outings. He is on a roll now, allowing just a single run in each of his last two starts, covering 13.2 innings. I expect him to have another strong outing tonight. The Cards' Achilles heel has been vs. left-handed pitching where they have dropped their last four. Go with the Dodgers.

Game: Indiana at San Antonio (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Game Total OVER 145 (-110)

The Indiana Fever begins defense of their 2012 WNBA Title tonight in San Antonio. Once a defensive-oriented team, the Fever averaged 78.3 points per game in their 10 playoffs games. This team is now on the move offensively. These teams only meet twice a year, as they are in opposing conferences, but last year they supplied a lot of points with a combined 160 generated in each game. I expect Indiana to come out doing what they do best and that is running the floor. And, as we saw a year ago San Antonio will be a willing participant. This should be an up-tempo game, so play on the OVER.

15* MLB Friday No-Doubt Rout on Baltimore Orioles -109

The Baltimore Orioles are showing solid value as a small road favorite over the Toronto Blue Jays. With the edge they have on the mound, there's no doubt they win in a blowout tonight.

Chris Tillman is one of the most underrated starters in the league. He has gone 3-2 with a 3.52 ERA through nine starts this season, and he's 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA through three home starts.

The Blue Jays are giving the ball to Sean Nolin for the first time this season. He's at a huge disadvantage tonight going up against Tillman, who has posted a 3.89 ERA and 1.108 WHIP through six starts in 2013.

Toronto is 2-11 (-9.5 Units) against the money line vs. excellent defensive catchers - allowing <=0.35 SB's/game this season. The Orioles are 6-1 in Tillman's last 7 road starts with the total set at 9.0-10.5. The Blue Jays are 0-5 in their last 5 Friday games. Take the Orioles Friday.

15* MLB Friday Night BAILOUT on Seattle Mariners +114

The Seattle Mariners actually have the edge on the mound tonight, thus they should not be an underdog to the Texas Rangers. Joe Saunders is clearly the better starter in this match-up with Justin Grimm.

Saunders is 3-0 with a miniscule 0.94 ERA and 0.872 WHIP through four home starts in 2013. Grimm is 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA and 1.571 WHIP through four road starts this season.

Seattle is 27-9 (+27.7 Units) against the money line after having lost 6 or 7 of their last 8 games over the last 2 seasons. Saunders is a very profitable 17-8 (+10.6 Units) against the money line as a home underdog of +100 or higher since 1997. Bet the Mariners Friday.

I think the floodgates are open now and there's just no way to keep the pucks out of the back of the net today. The series moves back to Pittsburgh where 12 goals were scored in the first two games of the series. With the Penguins in control 3-1 and at home, I expect them to dictate the pace and attack the zone at will. Craig Anderson is a great goalie, but even he can't stop 40 quality shots each game. 5-Unit Play. #51. Take Under 5.5 Goals Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa (Friday @ 7:35 pm est)

Notice that 80% are on Pittsburgh and that is reason to immediately take a notice on this game. In fact, it makes me think that this game will have a strong tendency towards Ottawa and if that is the case, and they come to the defense of their coach, then it has a strong tendency to go Under which is their style of play. The Penguins have the most-talented roster in the League, especially after general manager Ray Shero added Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow, Jussi Jokinen and Douglas Murray before the NHL Trade Deadline. A lot of these weapons have yet to win a Stanley Cup ring. Holding Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis, Jarome Iginla and Kris Letang off the board in the same game isn't an easy feat to accomplish, but the Ottawa Senators did it last Sunday night on their home ice. Senators HC Paul MacLean's ability to recognize who is feeling it on a given night is one of Ottawa's main strengths. The defense and goaltending must carry this Senators team if Ottawa is going to win this game. Head Coach Paul MacLean's system is based heavily on conditioning and relentless skating is now installed, and with a lot more stability on the roster. The Sens HC Paul MacLean has to be among the favorites for the NHL coach of the year after getting the Senators into the playoffs despite a run of key injuries that would have decimated a lot of other teams. As if the series needed any extra juice, there is still plenty of hard feelings from the Feb. 13 meeting -- that was the night when Penguins forward Matt Cooke delivered a hit to Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson that resulted in the reigning Norris Trophy winner suffering a 70-percent tear of his Achilles tendon. Karlsson missed 31 games, but returned right before the end of the regular season. Ottawa has to retaliate in this game. Look for the red light behind the goaltender's to be quiet in this game at the Consol Energy Center and for the Pens to punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals. Series clinching wins always are the hardest win in every series. The Under is (13-5) in Penguins last (18) home games, (36-16-11) in Senators last (63) overall and (13-3-1) in Senators last (17) following a home loss of (3) or more goals.

NBA action report: Money pouring in on Indy/Miami over

After an exciting start to the series, the NBA Eastern Conference finals move to Game 2 Friday night. Miami got a late driving layup by LeBron James to win the game 103-102, but failed to cover as the 8.5-point favorite. Lines opened with Miami as a 7-point favorite this time around and we talked to Jay Rood at The Mirage to check in on the betting action.

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat - Open: -7, Move: -7.5

Most books opened the line with Miami as the 7-point fave and has since moved to -7.5. When we talked to Jay, money had started to come in on the Pacers.

"Right now, there is a little lean to the Pacers at about 3:2," Rood told Covers. "The Heat do have their backers, but there is a lot of teaser money on the Pacers."

But it wasn't the action on the moneyline that had Rood talking. It was the action on the total. The total is currently 182 at most books but is 181.5 at the Mirage and money is pouring in on the over.

"The money coming in is exclusively over money," added Rood. "I would say that it's coming in at a rate of 20:1 on the over. Sharp money is also coming in on the over. We're probably going to join the rest of the world at 182 but we're not there yet."

MLB

Atlanta (Medlen) (-165, -1 ½ run EVEN) at NY Mets (Hefner) 7:10 PM ET

4% Atlanta (Medlen) (-165, -1 ½ run EVEN

Baseball has a funny way of evening out. In a streak ending last year, the Braves were unbeatable in Medlen starts providing plenty of support for his excellent pitching. This year, things have evened out. Being supported by only 2.4 RPG, 2nd lowest in baseball, Medlen is 1-5 with a 3.02 ERA. Medlen comes off one of his best performances of the season in which he allowed just 2 hits and no earned runs in 7 IP of a 3-1 Atlanta victory over LAD. It would be no surprise for that excellent work to continue as in 3 starts against NY last year, Medlen was 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA. Surely he will be superior to his mound opponent Hefner. The Mets are 0-8 in Hefner’s starts as he has posted a record of 0-5 with 5.00 ERA. There may be some concern about the fact that despite entering with 6 consecutive wins (all at home) it is noted that Atlanta is 6-13 away of late. But considering that NY enters on an overall 7-19 run, that is easily discounted. Especially considering that on this field, NY is recently 2-11 and 0-6 in which they have been outscored 36-14. Atlanta enters tonight with a record of 13-3 in this series. Run line players take note: 23/28 Atlanta wins have been by 2 or more runs including 11/13 on the road. Consider making part of your wager on the run line.

Pittsburgh (Burnett) (-105) at Milwaukee (Estrada) 8:10 PM ET

4% Pittsburgh (Burnett) (-105)

The back story of this game finds Milwaukee with a record of 54-8 vs. the Pirates in this series at this site. But that is ancient history considering the way these teams are currently playing and the fact that Pittsburgh just won 3/4 from Milwaukee in their previous series. After starting 1-5, Pittsburgh is on runs of 28-13 and 11-2. In those 13 games, the pitching staff has a 2.14 ERA. Compare that to Milwaukee who, in the month of May, has gone 4-16 with a team ERA of 6.77 while being outscored 108-67. Each of these pitchers have 3 victories. That is where the similarities end. Burnett has a 2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 79/23 KBB. Estrada has a 5.44 ERA for the season including 9.31 ERA in 4 home starts.

St. Louis (Lynn) (-115) vs. LA Dodgers (Capuano) 10:10 PM ET

3% St. Louis (Lynn) (-115)

Now that Greinke has returned to the rotation and Capuano has begun to pitch better with a 1.32 ERA in his last 2 starts, I see the Dodgers stabilizing a bit following their 9-19 slide. But Capuano has struggled vs. St. Louis with a record of 1-5 and 6.58 ERA in 10 starts. And the Cards keep rolling up the victories with a record of 30-16 including an MLB best 16-8 away. Credit timely hitting and great pitching. St. Louis enters tonight on a run of 16-5 with a .362 BA with RISP. Using great starting pitching, they have outscored their foes 103-67. Lynn is included in that excellence with a record of 6-1, 3.27 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 57/23 KBB.

Minnesota (Deduno) at Detroit (Sanchez) (-215. -1 ½ runs EVEN)

4% Detroit (Sanchez) (-215, -1 ½ runs EVEN)

Detroit came from way back last night to win 7-6 for their 3rd consecutive victory. That victory dropped the Twins to 0-9 recently in which they were outscored 58-28. Deduno makes his 1st start of the season after being shelved with a groin injury. Last year in 15 starts, Deduno had a 4.44 ERA. In a trio of outings at AAA Rochester, Deduno had a 2.70 ERA. But when he last faced Detroit from this mound, Deduno was lit up with 7 runs in 2 1/3 IP. Detroit counters with Sanchez who has an ERA of 2.77, 1.23 WHIP, 68/14 KBB and in 2 outings vs. the Twins this year has allowed just 3 runs in 11 IP. Run line players take note: 22/26 Detroit wins have been by 2 or more runs including 12/14 home victories. Consider part of your action on the run line.

LA Angels (Vargas) (-115) at Kansas City (Mendoza) 8:10 PM ET

4% LA Angels (Vargas) (-115)

These two teams are clearly headed opposite directions. Following a 17-10 start, Kansas City enters tonight on a 4-13 slide. The Angels stood a miserable 15-27 before winning their last 5 games by combined scores of 42-16. There is a good chance that momentum continues for each with this pitching matchup. Vargas has won his last 5 vs. the Royals with an ERA of 2.18. Following a slow start, in his last 6 starts Vargas is 3-1 with a 2.47 ERA. In his most recent outing, he allowed only 4 hits and no earned runs in 7 IP of a 6-2 win vs. CWS. Mendoza is 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA. In 3 starts vs. LAA, Mendoza has a 9.75 ERA.

NBA

Indiana at Miami (-7-) 8:35 PM ET TNT

3% Indiana +7-

No way to excuse the brain cramp of Indiana HC Vogel when he mysteriously sat rim-protector Hibbert in a pair of closing possessions that allowed Lebron to get to the rim and ultimately squeeze out a 103-102 Game #1 OT victory. Yet it was clear to all who watched that game that Indiana played Miami on even terms throughout. And the confidence attained by burgeoning Indiana star Paul George in knocking down a 30 footer to send the game to OT then making 3 consecutive foul shots to give Indiana a late game lead cannot be overestimated. Unfortunately, Indiana now has to win 5 games to win this series. If they are not too shell-shocked from the Game #1 results, they again have the fundamentals with the bigger and stronger team to use their outstanding defense and rebounding to take this to the final buzzer again. Historically, this has proven to be a strong zig-zag proposition for the road team particularly at this price range in Game #2 vs. a greater than .750 foe. We will give the Pacers a shot to prove that Game #1 was no fluke and hope their psyche did not get too badly bruised.

WNBA

Indiana Fever (-3) at San Antonio Silver Spurs 8:00 PM ET

3% San Antonio +3

This is opening night of the 2013 WNBA a season in which we will pull down enormous profit once again. For lowest rates and details on the 4 month season contact 724-715-7186. Last season, Joe was 62-41 ATS in the regular season including 22-9 ATS (71%) on top plays. This season begins for each team with critical injuries to both. Indiana won the WNBA crown last season getting on a late season run keyed by defense and rebounding to upset Connecticut and then Minnesota in the finals. They beat the Links without Katie Douglas, their veteran all around star and best 3 point shooter. She returns this year to join Tamika Catchings, the league’s best all-around player, as a dynamic duo. But 3 key components of last year’s team are on the injured list. Starting PG Erin Phillips (knee) will be out 4 to 6 weeks. Jessica Davenport, starting center, will also miss 6 to 8 weeks with a knee while 3 point marksman Jeannette Pohlen is out until August with an ACL. In short, Indiana will not resemble their Championship team until the 2nd half of the season. The Silver Starts have their own injury issues as they will miss their best player, Sophia Young (16/7) for the season. As well, veteran guard Becky Hammond is sidelined with a broken middle finger on her shooting hand. But very quietly, the Silver Stars have made the Playoffs 6 consecutive years under Dan Hughes who uses 9 to 10 players focusing on defense and a transition game. San Antonio was the ATS darling of the WNBA last year and was 12-5 SU on their strong home court in finishing just 1 game behind Indiana in the regular season. We take the value home dog in a game where too much emphasis in the line has been placed on the injuries of the home team.

MLB - 965 Baltimore Orioles @ 966 Toronto Blue Jays
(Starting Pitchers: C. Tillman vs S. Nolin)
Toronto will start Sean Nolin tonight, who is earning his first trip to the big leagues by going 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA on three starts for New Hampshire. This is a huge test for him, as he has never pitched above Double-A. He is coming from Double-A into the major leagues to debut against a team that is #2 in the league in hitting against LH pitchers with a .794 OPS! Good luck!
Baltimore will start Chris Tillman, who continues to be in some nice form. He had a few problems against Tampa Bay on his last start, but he hung in there with just three runs allowed in six innings. I believe Tillman will be able to have another positive outing tonight, while Baltimore will expose Nolin's lack of experience at this level to pound him. Therefore, I see a clear pitching edge in here for the Orioles, while both lineups are hitting quite well and at a similar level right now, so I see good value on taking Baltimore tonight.

Pick: 3 units (Single Dime Play) on 965 Baltimore Orioles ML (w/ C. Tillman)
