Blackhawks at Kings: What bettors need to know

Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings (-129, 4.5)

Blackhawks lead best-of-seven series 2-0.

The Los Angeles Kings have feasted on home cooking at Staples Center, winning their last 14 consecutive contests - including all seven in the postseason. The fifth-seeded Kings will need that trend to continue in Tuesday's Game 3 of the Western Conference final if they wish to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination by the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks. Los Angeles was able to overcome an 0-2 deficit in its first-round series by winning four straight versus fourth-seeded St. Louis.

For the Kings to continue their quest to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, they'll need their offense to make an appearance. Los Angeles has mustered just 29 goals in 15 playoff games - and the waters have been rough against Corey Crawford, who has stopped 50 of 53 shots to win both Games 1 and 2. Kings coach Darryl Sutter didn't mince words when noting the struggles of the line consisting of captain Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams. "They've struggled offensively, for sure," Sutter said. "That's not me jumping out making a statement. That is a fact. That is a statistical fact."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Pushed to the brink of elimination by Original Six rival Detroit in the second round, Chicago has looked every bit the part of the team that clinched its second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history. The Blackhawks have won five in a row - with more than just captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane providing the offense. "When we're rolling four lines, keeping (shifts) short and rolling hard, I think we can have a great hockey team and a great pace in our game," said Bryan Bickell, who netted his sixth goal of the playoffs on Sunday.

ABOUT THE KINGS: Jonathan Quick found himself in an unfamiliar place Sunday - on the bench. The reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner yielded four goals versus the Blackhawks to earn himself an early exit in a postseason game for the first time since April 23, 2010. Rather than reflect, Quick did his best to look ahead. "We just haven't been finding a way," the Connecticut native said. "We have to find a way. They did their job, now we have to go home and do our job."

TRENDS:

*Blackhawks are 6-0 in their last six Tuesday games.
*Kings are 0-4 in their last four in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation.
*Under is 4-1 in Kings' last five home games.
*Blackhawks are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Los Angeles.

OVERTIME

1. Chicago C Michal Handzus has collected two goals and three assists on his five-game point streak. He has one of each in the first two contests of this series.

2. Los Angeles C Mike Richards sat out Sunday's tilt with an upper-body injury - and is expected to be a game-time decision on Tuesday.

3. Blackhawks D Brent Seabrook has scored goals in two of his last three games.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
By JASON LOGAN

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

This week’s lookahead spot requires a gaze forward to Week 1 of the NFL season, when the always intriguing and often befuddling New York Jets host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 2.5-point home underdogs. Early-bird bettors have already moved this spread, which opened N.Y. -1.5, and grabbed the added value on the Bucs knowing that a trip to Foxborough awaits the J-E-T-S in Week 2.

While the ship may have sailed on Tampa Bay plus the points, the current line sits under the key number and could get even bigger depending on the Jets’ decision at QB, more specifically if Geno Smith is making his pro debut. New York will try to ease its rookie into the fire with a dumbed-down attack in Week 1 before heading to hell for the full baptism in Week 2.

Letdown spot

Whoever wins the Eastern Conference finals – the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers – have a short turnaround to get prepared physically and mentally for the San Antonio Spurs, with Game 1 of the NBA Finals scheduled for Thursday. San Antonio has been resting its aging legs and perfecting its game plan for either opponent since sweeping the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western finals on May 27 – a span of nine full days off.

Whichever team escapes Game 7 they will undoubtedly be primed for a letdown spot after such a near-death experience. Not only are they taking on an experienced and fresh Spurs squad but also matching wits with Gregg Popovich, who is perhaps the most prepared coach in all of sports.

Schedule spot

This season was supposed to be the Phoenix Mercury’s return to the top of the WNBA. A year after winning only seven games, the Mercury have a new face of the franchise in No. 1 overall pick Brittney Griner and some seasoned vets in Diana Taurasi and Candace Dupree. Phoenix actually opened the 2013 campaign as the odds-on-favorite to win the WNBA Championship (+325).

After two games, that optimistic aura is starting to welt in the desert heat. Phoenix is 0-2 SU and ATS, losing at home to Chicago and on the road at Seattle, and has two massive road tests ahead this week. The Mercury take on the WNBA’s two top teams, rolling into Minnesota to play the Western Conference winners Thursday and then visit the reigning champs in Indiana Saturday. Phoenix went just 4-13 SU and 6-11 ATS on the road last summer.

Tuesday MLB

Why we like the Orioles RL on Tuesday at -110...the Astros have been playing their best ball of the season up to date where they have won their last 6 of 8 games going into Colorado and Los Angeles. A few of the reasons that we will fade them on Tuesday is because they will be making the trip from LA to Houston where they are 9-21 on the season as well as over their past seven games during their winning streak, they still only managed to score an average of 4.3 rpg which is right on par to where they have been all season long. The Orioles will be coming into Tuesdays game playing some good ball of their own winning their last 4 of 5 games against the Nationals and Tigers at home where they averaged 4.9 rpg over their last seven games. On the season, the Orioles are 5-2 when playing after a day off, which plays even better for them as they were able to have an extra day in Houston on Monday before the Astros even got there. The Orioles will be pitching Chris Tillman who comes into this game with a 4.26 era on the season but his numbers are a bit strange where he his predominately better on the road than he is at home. Tillman has a 3-0 road record to match his 2.59 road era where he has allowed just 2 HRs in 24 innings, compared to the 14 total HRs that he has allowed all season. Tillmans last two road starts came against the above average offenses of the Angels and Blue Jays where he allowed a total of 3 runs through 13 innings on 2 BBs and 10 Ks. The Astros will be pitching Lucas Harrell who comes into this game with a 5.37 era and unlike Tillman is predominately worse at home than he is on the road. Harrell has a 2-4 home record to match a 7.15 home era where he has allowed 44 hits on 6 HRs through 34 innings compared to the 8 HRs that he has allowed all season. Harrells last home start came on May 25th against the A's where he allowed 6 runs through 1 inning on 6 hits, 3 BBs and 1 K. The Orioles come in with the bullpen edge as they are well rested and have a 4.22 road era compared the Astros home bullpen era of 5.64. A trend to keep in mind is that the Orioles are 17-12 in road games while the Astros are 9-21 in home games.

Play on the Orioles RL at -110

Kings were down 2-0 in first round vs St Louis, rallied to win next four games, including their only road win of playoffs; LA is 7-0 at home in playoffs, allowing eight goals in the seven games. Chicago is 5-2 in its last seven visits to Staples Center; they're 2-3 on road in playoffs, but won last five games overall, allowing eight goals, since being down 3-1 in Detroit series. Eight of last ten LA games stayed under the total; Under is 4-2-1 in last seven Chicago games. Bruins/Chicago are following similar paths; looked dead, but didn't die and now both appear to be on collision course to meet in Cup finals. Blackhawks are 4-1 against LA this season, winning 5-2 in only game played here.

NBA teams off seven-game series struggle in Game 1 of finals

The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs have followed two different paths to the NBA Finals.

The defending champion Heat are coming off a grueling seven-game series with the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals, with just two days to recover before the NBA Finals begin Thursday. The Spurs, on the other hand, will have had their feet up for nine full days since sweeping the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference finals on May 27.

Miami is a -220 series favorite versus San Antonio (+190) and is a 5.5-point home favorite in Game 1.

Teams coming off an emotional Game 7 win haven’t fared that well in the NBA Finals. Since 1993, 10 teams have gone the distance in their respective conference championship and only four of those went on to win the title.

Fortunately, for Miami fans, the Heat did just that last season after going the full seven versus the Boston Celtics in the East finals. But as good as Miami was in 2012, it was unable to avoid a letdown in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, like so many other teams in this situation.

Those 10 teams coming off a full seven in the conference finals have gone just 3-7 SU and ATS in the opening game of the championship series, including the 2012 Heat who fell 105-94 as 5-point road underdogs to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of last year’s finals.

On the other side of the series, San Antonio finds itself among the NBA’s elite by sweeping its conference championship. The Spurs are just the seventh team to win four straight heading into the NBA Finals since 1991, with four of those past six teams going on to win the title. However, in an odd twist, just two of those six teams managed to cover the spread in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

The last time the finals featured one team off a sweep and one off a seven-game set was 2001, when the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Spurs in four games and played the Philadelphia 76ers, who edged the Milwaukee Bucks in seven contests. The Sixers stunned the Lakers 107-101 in overtime as 12-point underdogs but lost the series in five games.

Heat open as NBA Finals series, Game 1 favorites versus Spurs

The Miami Heat escaped Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals and are now favorites to win back-to-back NBA titles, opening as -220 series chalk against the San Antonio Spurs (+190).

Miami thumped the Indiana Pacers in the deciding game of the East finals Monday, winning 99-76 as a 7-point home favorite. The Heat will have two days to prepare for San Antonio, which will be off for nine full days heading into the finals since sweeping the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference finals on May 27.

Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday in Miami. Oddsmakers have opened the Heat as 5.5-point home favorites. The Heat won both meetings with the Spurs, going 1-1 ATS this season, and have taken each of the past four games versus San Antonio (1-3 ATS).

Game: San Diego at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -135 (moneyline)

The San Diego Padres have done most of their heavy lifting at home where they are an above .500 team. It has been a different story on the road where the Padres are just 10-17 on the season. Yasiel Puig's entry into the bigs was huge as he had 2 hits and recorded an outfield assist. Hanley Ramirez should also be back in the lineup tonight, so the Dodgers' attack is getting upgraded. The better news is the fact that Gonzalez, and Ramirez are a combined 17-20 against Padres' starter Richard. The Dodgers also have Ted Lilly on the mound and his career ERA vs. the Padres is 2.51 with a WHIP of 1.05. Richard has led the Padres to a woeful 2-15 mark in his last 17 starts on the road to a total of 7-8.5. Go with the Dodgers.

NBA Finals series betting preview: Heat vs. Spurs

The NBA Playoffs are down to two teams, the defending champion Miami Heat and the veteran-heavy San Antonio Spurs. This is the third straight NBA Finals appearance for the Heat and the Spurs’ fourth trip to the finals in the last 11 seasons.

Here’s a look at how these teams stack up and their odds to win the NBA Championship heading into Game 1 Thursday.

No. 1 Miami Heat vs. No. 2 San Antonio Spurs

Season series: Miami 2-0, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U
Series prices: Miami -220, San Antonio +190
Postseason record: Miami 12-4 SU, 9-7 ATS, 7-7-2 O/U, San Antonio 12-2 SU, 10-4 ATS, 7-7 O/U

Why bet the Spurs: San Antonio has been off for nine full days since sweeping Memphis in the Western Conference finals. For most teams, that layoff would disrupt momentum but the Spurs have proven mentally strong during extended breaks, going 8-1 SU and 6-3 ATS when playing on three or more days rest this season. The Spurs don’t have a true 7-footer inside like Indiana’s Roy Hibbert but they are tough in the paint, with Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter going up against a smaller Miami frontcourt. San Antonio can quickly adapt to any pace and Gregg Popovich has had ample time to cook up a plan for slowing down LeBron & Co.

Why bet the Heat: LeBron. The reigning MVP is approaching Jordan status as the ultimate trump card when it comes to arguing which team will win. San Antonio will throw Kawhi Leonard at James, who scored 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting in his lone game vs. the Spurs this season (missed the other due to injury), but there is no stopping LeBron. Not to mention, there’s still a chip on James’ shoulder from a 2007 finals sweep to San Antonio while with the Cavs. Dwyane Wade scored 21 points in the finale with Indiana, his playoff high. If he’s awakening from his postseason slumber, the Heat could burn San Antonio when it doubles up on James.

2 UNIT = Toronto Blue Jays @ San Francisco Giants - BLUE JAYS TO WIN (+120)
Listed Pitchers: Johnson vs Lincecum
(Note: I’m risking 2.00 units to win 2.40 units)

The Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants both avoided a sweep on Sunday with a victory, and both enjoyed days off yesterday. The Blue Jays beat San Diego on Sunday 7-4 and are now 24-33 on the season and 10-17 on the road. The Giants beat St Louis 4-2 and are 30-27 on the season and 20-10 at home. These two teams had a two game set in Toronto in May with the Blue Jays winning both games by scores of 10-6 and 11-3. Tonight’s starter for Toronto is Josh Johnson who is coming off a DL stint. Johnson is 0-1 with a 6.86 ERA this year, .329 OBA and 1.88 WHIP over just 4 starts. Johnson had posted sub 4.00 ERA’s in his last 5 seasons and it is only a matter of time before he starts to pitch well. He has been working on a new change up and that should help him. Tim Lincecum is on the mound for San Francisco and is 3-5 on the year with a 5.12 ERA, .259 OBA and 1.48 WHIP over 11 starts. After a pretty good April Lincecum struggled going 1-4 with a 6.37 ERA in May. Over his last three starts he has allowed 6, 4, and 5 earned runs against. Note that the Giants are just 1-5 in their last 6 interleague games, 0-4 in their last 4 vs AL East opponents, and 1-4 in Lincecum’s last 5 starts. At +120 we’ve got value on Toronto tonight and I think they come out with a victory in Game 1 of this two game set.

A's minus $1.15 at Brewers
Oakland is hot playing its best ball of the season with 15 wins in its last 17 games. The Brewers are just the opposite losing 24 of their last 31. They are 3-13 during their past 16 games at Miller Park and 4-17 versus opponents with a winning record.
The A's have turned around their earlier road problems capturing eight of their last 11 away matchups. Oakland is a much better hitting club away from its spacious Coliseum.
The pitching matchup is A.J. Griffin versus Kyle Lohse. Oakland is 6-1 in Griffin's last seven starts. The A's are 20-7 in Griffin's past 27 starts. The Brewers' offense looks much better on paper than it does on the field with lack of production at second base and at the corner spots when Aramis Ramirez isn't in the lineup, which has been frequently due to his knee problems.
Lohse returned to the rotation against the Twins this past Thursday after missing a start with pain in his elbow and allowed a season-high six runs and a career-high four home runs. Lohse said the problem wasn't pain, but location.
The truth is Lohse isn't nearly as good outside of when he pitched for the Cardinals. Either he still is not right physically or his control is off. Lohse has a career ERA ž of 5.54 versus Oakland and Milwaukee has dropped each of his last six starts.

HOUSTON ASTROS OVER 3.5 RUNS (-125)
First off, we do know that these Astros season to date numbers, are more favorable vs southpaws. However, these Astros have won 6 games in a row, and have scored 5 or more runs in 6 of their L/10 games, as well. This club is playing with confidence right now, and they do have a handful of very talented, be it young/lack experience good sticks in their lineup. Minute Maid Park can be an extreme hitters Park, and especially when the roof is open. I am NOT sure of the roof will be open tonight, as it's suppose to be in the high 80's at game time. Either way (open or closed) I do expect these scrappy Astros to plate 4 runs for us tonight. Baltimore sends out extreme fly ball SP Chris Tillman tonight, and he has given up 8 HR's in just 15 2/3 IP over his L/3 starts. We also know that while these O's have a "good bullpen" it's not a shut down backend and has had it's share of problems in the backend of their bullpen. I like these Astros to get to Tillman eventually and I definitely like these Astros to plate 4 runs for us tonight.

3-Unit Play. #912. Take LA Dodgers -135 over the San Diego Padres (Tuesday @ 10:10pm est).

Padres vs. Dodgers 10:10 pm est. Manager Don Mattingly has to feel confident about his starters (3-0) record and (0.95) ERA in his last three outings against San Diego. For the record, southpaw Ted Lilly owns a career (11-4) record with a (2.51) ERA against the Rockies. The Dodgers are also (6-1) in Lillys last (7) starts versus the Padres. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly understands the expectations generated by the collection of All-Star-caliber players. The trouble early on is that they are not playing an All-Star Game. Look for that to change as ther is simplyto much talent with their payroll over $200 million after a series of expensive, high-profile additions starting last July. Clayton Richard gets the start for the Holy Men and he is win-less at (0-5) with an (8.35) ERA as a starter. Manager Harry Ralston Bud Black does an amazing job keeping the Holy Men in the hunt but look for the Dodger Blue to cash a winning ticket for us behind Lilly.

Tampa Bay at Detroit

Where: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
By SportsDirect Inc.

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to show off their vastly improved offense, scoring 53 runs en route to winning seven of their last eight contests. The Rays look to build on that when they send eight-game winner Matt Moore to the mound on Tuesday to start a three-game series at the struggling Detroit Tigers. Miguel Cabrera, who has a league-best 65 RBIs, didnt cool off while the Tigers dropped five of the last six games.

Kelly Johnson has recorded 35 RBIs and Evan Longoria 34 to lead Tampa Bay balanced offense, which is averaging 5.04 runs after finishing at 4.30 last year. The Tigers dropped a pair of 1-0 results and have suffered three two-run losses in the last six contests. Prince Fielder homered twice over the weekend for the Tigers after going 20 games without a blast.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Matt Moore (8-0, 2.18 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (5-5, 2.79)

Moore only finished one scoreless inning before a long rain delay ended his last start Friday at Cleveland. So the left-hander attempts to become the fifth youngest pitcher since 1916 to start 9-0 again after allowing two or fewer runs in nine of 11 starts. Moore made the start against Detroit in his season opener last season, yielding two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Sanchez gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings in his last start after pitching a near no-hitter in his previous outing. The right-hander, who is 2-4 in his last six outings, is near the league lead with 89 strikeouts and has walked only 18 in 71 innings. Sanchez is 1-1 in four career starts with a 4.78 ERA against the Rays. Tampa Bay catcher Jose Molina is 2-for-2 with a homer against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit RF Torii Hunter returned to the lineup Sunday after missing three games with an elbow injury. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

2. Johnson is 5-for-26 with a home run in his career versus Sanchez.

3. The Tigers have 10 of 13 meetings against the Rays the last two seasons.

LAS VEGAS -- What a matchup we have in Detroit tonight, as the pitcher with the majors; lowest batting average against faces the hitter with baseballs highest average. It's Tampa Bay left-hander Matt Moore (8-0, 2.18 ERA) against Miguel Cabrera (.367, 65 RBIs) in the opener of a three-game set.

While the Rays are playing outstanding ball, the Tigers have been a bit sluggish, and things don't figure to get any easier for Detroit tonight. Not only has Moore evolved into one of the top pitchers in the game, but the Tigers are 5-7 against left-handed starters on the year. Cabrera, however, has hit .417 against lefties this season.

The Tigers (30-25) hold a one-game lead over the Indians in the AL Central, but they have been slumping lately and in all facets. They've lost five of their last six, scoring only 10 runs in those five losses, which comes as a major surprise since they lead the majors in batting average (.279) and on-base percentage (.346).

One of the Tigers biggest issues is holding leads late in games. After Jose Valverde imploded at Baltimore last Friday, giving up four runs in the ninth after inheriting a 5-3 lead, their closer role has to be manager Jim Leyland's biggest concern. It was only Valverde's second blown save of the season, against six saves, but it was a reminder why the Tigers didn't immediately re-sign him after last season and why no one else did, either.

The Rays (31-25), meanwhile, have been putting everything together after a slow start to the season. They currently are in fourth-place in the AL East, but just three games behind the division-leading Red Sox. Detroit gets a lot of publicity with their fearsome lineup that averages 5.2 runs a game, but the Rays are right behind them at 5.0 runs a game. Since May 17, the Rays have averaged 6.1 run per game, a stretch that has seen them win 11 of 16 contests.

For the Rays to keep rolling, they'll have to get by Anibal Sanchez (5-5. 2.79 ERA), who is 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA in five home starts. Although Sanchez is capable of throwing a no-hitter during any start, he has trouble against winning teams. Over the past two seasons, Sanchez's teams have gone 6-17 against opponents with a winning record.

The 6-17 mark includes outings for the Marlins as well as the Tigers, but the trend is alive and well over the last month. His last two wins came against the Astros and Twins, while he’s lost to the Pirates, Rangers and Nationals. As great as he looks at times, the Tigers are only 5-6 in games he's started.

On the other side, the Rays have gone 10-1 behind Moore. They were winning games behind him even when the team wasn't hitting so well, and Moore becomes even more imposing now that the Tampa bats have come alive.

The most appealing thing about Moore and the Rays tonight is that he's an underdog (+128). Not only do you get one of the best pitchers in the game facing a team that is struggling, but you also get him at plus-money. This looks like the best play on the board today.

Tuesday's selections:

Rays (Moore) +128 at Tigers

Pirates (Locke) +154 at Braves

Rangers (Grimm) +128 at Red Sox

Season to date record: 111-101-1 (+1,228)

The red-hot Houston Astros return home from a perfect six-game road trip to begin a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. Houston edged the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Monday to complete a four-game sweep and wrap up its best trek since going 7-0 in Montreal and Philadelphia from Sept. 3-9, 1999. The Astros, who occupy last place in the American League West, are in the midst of their longest winning streak since they captured seven in a row from July 27-Aug. 3, 2010.

Baltimore, which is beginning a six-game trip, enters with the second-best road record in the major leagues at 17-12. The Orioles 4-1 homestand that concluded Sunday with a 4-2 comeback win over the Detroit Tigers. Chris Davis highlighted a three-run seventh inning with his major league-leading 20th home run and scored an insurance run in the eighth as Baltimore won for the sixth time in seven home games.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), Comcast SportsNet (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Chris Tillman (4-2, 4.26 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lucas Harrell (4-6, 5.37)

Tillman struggled in his last outing, surrendering six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Washington Nationals before escaping with a no-decision. The 25-year-old also served up four home runs, raising his total to 11 over his last five starts. Tillman, who is 3-0 on the road this year, has yet to face Houston in his career.

Harrell ended his personal four-game losing streak Thursday as he allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings in a victory over the Rockies in Colorado. The right-hander, who celebrated his 28th birthday Monday, was tagged for five or more runs three times over his previous five starts but yielded one earned run in each of the other two outings. Harrell will be facing Baltimore for the first time.

WALK-OFFS

1. Davis was named AL Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this year after going 13-for-27 with four homers and six RBIs.

2. Astros OF Justin Maxwell, who has been on the disabled list with a broken left hand since April 24, will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday.

3. Baltimore is visiting Houston for the first time since being swept in a three-game series from June 3-5, 2003.

The St. Louis Cardinals look to improve upon their major league-best record Tuesday as they continue their four-game series against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. St. Louis improved to 38-19 by posting a 7-1 triumph in Monday's opener of the set between division leaders. The Cardinals, who sit atop the National League Central, have won seven of their last nine contests.

Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina combined for two home runs and five RBIs while Lance Lynn worked seven strong innings for St. Louis, which has not lost consecutive games since dropping three straight from April 27-29. Molina was in the lineup after appealing the one-game suspension he received from the league for making contact with an umpire Sunday. The NL West-leading Diamondbacks are 2-3 on their eight-game road trip.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Arizona, Fox Sports Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Tyler Skaggs (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (0-0, 1.29)

Skaggs will be making his second start of the season and the eighth of his major-league career. The 21-year-old was superb in his season debut against the Texas Rangers on May 27, limiting one of the American League's top offensive teams to three hits and three walks while striking out nine over six scoreless innings. Skaggs, who never has faced the Cardinals, yielded six runs over eight frames in two road starts last year - his only two no-decisions in the majors.

Wacha impressed in his major-league debut Thursday, allowing one run and two hits in seven innings against the Kansas City Royals. The 21-year-old struck out six without issuing a walk, but did not factor in the decision. Wacha was the 19th overall pick in last year's draft.

WALK-OFFS

1. Arizona LHP Patrick Corbin was named National League Pitcher of the Month for May on Monday after going 5-0 with a 1.53 ERA in five starts.

2. RHP Joe Kelly will make a spot start Wednesday as St. Louis' rotation was disrupted by Friday's rainout.

The Cincinnati Reds are winning games in the simplest way possible lately - by not allowing any runs. Cincinnati, which has recorded three shutouts in its last four games, will try to make it six straight victories over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. The Reds also have a hot hitter on their hands in Jay Bruce, who delivered a two-run homer among his three hits in Monday's 3-0 victory over Colorado and has gone deep eight times in his last 23 games.

Cincinnati will likely be without second baseman Brandon Phillips, who missed the last two games after getting struck in the left forearm by a pitch against Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Rockies, who have lost seven of their last 10 games, have scored 32 runs in their last 12 road contests and are 4-8 in those games. Colorado's Juan Nicasio is 1-2 in his last six starts and will oppose Homer Bailey, whose last outing ended abruptly when he allowed five consecutive RBI hits.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Sports (Colorado), Fox Sports Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Juan Nicasio (4-2, 4.79 ERA) vs. Reds RH Homer Bailey (3-4, 3.84)

Nicasio led 3-1 through five innings before allowing five runs and seven hits in five-plus frames in the Rockies' 7-5 loss to Houston on Thursday. The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native yielded two runs over 11 innings in his two previous turns, including six shutout frames in a 5-0 victory over San Francisco on May 19. Nicasio, who has not pitched more than six frames in a game this season and allowed 57 hits in 56 1/3 innings with a 1.42 WHIP, has never faced the Reds.

Bailey retired the first seven batters and recorded two outs in the fourth inning before the Indians scored six runs during their next five at-bats en route to a 7-1 victory on Thursday. The 27-year-old La Grange, Texas, native was 2-0 in his previous three turns while recording quality starts in each outing. Bailey, who has 68 strikeouts in 68 innings, is 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and a .355 batting average against in five starts against Colorado.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Reds improved to 21-7 at Great America Ball Park - the best home record in baseball.

2. Colorado rookie 3B Nolan Arenado, who started his major-league career 10-for-31, is 19 for his last 100.

3. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Monday and did not reach base for only the fifth time in 58 games.

The Minnesota Twins are flexing their offensive muscle while the Kansas City Royals are routinely getting sand kick in their face. The Twins will vie for their seventh win in eight outings on Tuesday when they open a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium against their American League Central rival. Minnesota, which has scored a staggering 39 runs in its last six victories, belted four home runs en route to a 10-0 triumph over Seattle on Sunday.

Kansas City has split its last four games under the watch of George Brett, who accepted the position as the team's interim hitting coach. The Hall of Famer has his work cut out for him as the Royals haven't scored more than four runs in any of their last 12 contests. Additionally, they mustered just seven en route to dropping two of three versus Texas over the weekend.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSNO (Minnesota), FSKC (Kansas City)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Samuel Deduno (1-1, 5.11 ERA) vs. Royals RH Luis Mendoza (1-2, 4.63)

After a brutal season debut on May 24, Deduno righted the ship in a hurry in his last outing. The 29-year-old Dominican allowed one run on four hits in seven sharp innings as Minnesota cruised to a 4-1 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday. Deduno fared well in his lone career outing versus Kansas City last season, yielding one run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Mendoza rebounded from two lackluster efforts to finish the month of May with a flourish. The 29-year-old Mexican yielded a total of five runs in his last 16 2/3 innings - but didn't receive a decision in his three trips to the mound. Mendoza posted a 2-1 mark with a 2.67 ERA against Minnesota last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins INF Justin Morneau missed the last two games with the flu, but is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday. Morneau is 5-for-8 against Mendoza.

2. Kansas City LF Alex Gordon, who collected his 24th multi-hit game on Sunday, is 1-for-3 in his career versus Deduno.

3. Minnesota promoted OF Clete Thomas from Triple-A Rochester on Monday. The 28-year-old Thomas batted .296 with the Red Wings this season and will take the roster spot of LHP Tyler Robertson, who was designated for release or assignment.

PREDICTION: Twins 4, Royals 2

Pittsburgh at Atlanta
When: 7:10 PM ET, Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Where: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
By SportsDirect Inc.

When naming the top left-handers in the National League, Jeff Locke and Mike Minor might not be the first hurlers people mention. But as Pittsburgh plays Tuesday at Atlanta, Locke and Minor will meet in a matchup of two southpaws who merit All-Star consideration. Locke is fifth in the NL in ERA, Minor ranks ninth, and both are big reasons why the Pirates and Braves have two of the Senior Circuit's top four records.

Atlanta won the series opener Monday, giving the NL East leaders its 13th victory in its past 17 games. The Pirates sit in third in the NL Central, but have teamed with division leader St. Louis and Cincinnati to give the division three teams with plus-.600 winning percentages. Pittsburgh has not faced a left-handed starter since May 18.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Root Sports (Pittsburgh), SportSouth (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Jeff Locke (5-1, 2.25 ERA) vs. Braves LH Mike Minor (7-2, 2.48).

Locke had just one major-league victory in 12 appearances coming into this season, but carries a 19 1/3-inning scoreless streak into Tuesday's contest. The 25-year-old has allowed three hits or fewer in six of his past eight starts. Locke gave up seven hits in 5 1/3 innings Thursday against Detroit, but kept the high-powered Tigers off the scoreboard.

Minor has been as good as anybody in baseball since last season's All-Star break, going 13-6 with a 2.31 ERA in 25 starts. His May was fantastic: a 4-0 record in six starts with a 1.98 ERA and 39 strikeouts against nine walks. Opponents are hitting .203 against Minor, scoring just 10 runs in 41 innings last month.

WALK-OFFS

1. Locke got a no-decision against Atlanta on April 18 in Pittsburgh, allowing four earned runs on six hits in a season-low 4 2/3 innings.

2. Atlanta has received stellar work from its bullpen, allowing just one run in its past 22 2/3 innings.

3. Pittsburgh has won six of its past nine road games.

PREDICTION: Braves 3, Pirates 2

Texas at Boston
When: 7:10 PM ET, Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
By SportsDirect Inc.

The American League's elite will meet at Fenway Park as the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox open a three-game set on Tuesday. Texas, which outscored Boston by a 16-4 margin en route to sweeping a three-game series in the Lone Star State on May 3-5, has won 28 of the last 40 meetings since the start of the 2009 season. The AL West-leading Rangers have rebounded from a three-game slide to win three of their last four contests - including two of three versus skidding Kansas City over the weekend.

The AL East-leading Red Sox also won two of three over the weekend, defeating both the rival New York Yankees and the elements to do so. Surprising Jose Iglesias is batting .400 (10-for-25) during his career-best seven-game hitting streak. Iglesias, who has reached base in 15 of the 16 games he's played, joined David Ortiz by belting a solo homer in Boston's rain-shortened 3-0 triumph on Sunday night.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Justin Grimm (5-3, 3.93 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Ryan Dempster (2-6, 4.45)

Grimm bounced back from a three-start losing streak to notch victories in his last three trips to the mound. Buoyed by significant run support, the 24-year-old has kept the ball in the yard in his last three outings while issuing just two free passes all season. Grimm, who was selected by Boston in the 13th round of the 2007 draft, has yet to face the Red Sox in his brief career.

Dempster is mired in a five-start winless drought (0-4, 6.41 ERA) - although he deserved a better fate in his last trip the mound. The 36-year-old British Columbia native allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings but watched as Boston's offense failed to get going against Cliff Lee in a 3-1 loss at Philadelphia. Dempster, who finished last season with Texas, has faced the Rangers just once in his career - picking up the save after striking out the side in his one inning of work.

WALK-OFFS

1. Texas 3B Adrian Beltre is dealing with a "minor" strain in his left hamstring, an MRI revealed on Monday. The three-time All-Star missed Sunday's tilt with the ailment but could return to the lineup on Tuesday.

2. Red Sox LF Jacoby Ellsbury missed the entire three-game set versus the Yankees with a groin injury but could return for Tuesday's tilt.

3. Texas RHP Alexi Ogando (right biceps tendinitis) is scheduled to return to the rotation and start Wednesday's game.

PREDICTION: Rangers 5, Red Sox 2

NY Mets at Washington
When: 7:05 PM ET, Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
By SportsDirect Inc.

The Washington Nationals struggling offense should get a boost Tuesday when outfielder Jayson Werth returns for the start of a three-game series against the visiting New York Mets. With 10 losses in its last 15 games, Washington has fallen under .500 for the first time since April 30. Werth, who has been sidelined since May 3 with a hamstring injury, will be asked to ignite a Nationals offense that has scored a total of seven runs over the last four games.

The Mets were trending upward after a four-game sweep of the Yankees, but they followed that with three straight losses at lowly Miami over the weekend. First baseman Ike Davis provided a ray of hope on Sunday when he had two hits, including his first home run since April 25. Davis was reportedly close to being demoted to the minors last week, but he's hit .333 with five RBIs over his last four games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jeremy Hefner (1-5, 4.74 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (8-3, 2.37)

Hefner earned his first win of the season on Wednesday against the Yankees, allowing three runs over six innings. Danny Espinosa is 5-for-10 with two homers against the 27-year-old right-hander, who has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of his last nine outings. He's 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA in four career starts against the Nationals, including an April 20 outing when he gave up three runs in four innings.

Zimmermann looks to bounce back from his worst start of the season after giving up seven runs over six innings at Baltimore on Wednesday. The loss snapped Zimmermann's streak of 15 straight starts of allowing three runs or fewer. The right-hander is 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five starts at Nationals Park this season, and he hasn't lost at home since May 17, 2012.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Nationals are 24-6 when scoring three or more runs this season.

2. The Mets have scored three runs or fewer in 10 of their last 16 games.

3. Washington has hit at least one home run in 75 consecutive series, the longest active streak in the majors.

PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Mets 1

Cleveland at NY Yankees
When: 7:05 PM ET, Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
By SportsDirect Inc.

With one emphatic swing, Mark Teixeira did his best to help the New York Yankees break out of their offensive doldrums. Fresh off hitting his eighth career grand slam, Teixeira and the Yankees will look to keep their positive momentum going on Tuesday when they continue their three-game series against the visiting Cleveland Indians. New York, which erupted for seven runs to win for the second time in nine games, mustered just 15 in its previous eight contests.

Cleveland fell for the 10th time in 14 games - and saw shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera suffer a right quadriceps strain while running down the first-base line. That's not the news manager Terry Francona wanted to hear as his sputtering team begins a challenging nine-game road trip that concludes against American League powers Detroit and Texas.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians LH Scott Kazmir (3-2, 5.13 ERA) vs. Yankees RH David Phelps (3-3, 4.65)

Kazmir snapped a three-start winless streak with a sizzling performance his last time out. The 29-year-old yielded one run and eight hits over seven solid innings as Cleveland cruised to a 7-1 triumph over Buckeye State rival Cincinnati on Thursday. Kazmir, who is 0-2 on the road in 2013, has posted a 7-6 career mark versus the Yankees.

Phelps would like to forget his last outing - as short as it was. The 26-year-old allowed five runs on four hits in one-third of an inning in an eventual 9-4 loss to the crosstown rival Mets on Wednesday. The setback was his first since May 13, when he allowed the game's only run and issued a season-high five walks in 6 2/3 innings against Cleveland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland RH Vinnie Pestano has yet to be tested in the closer's role. Chris Perez normally fills that position but is on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

2. New York's Travis Hafner celebrated his 36th birthday by belting a solo homer on Monday. He is 1-for-6 with three strikeouts in his career versus Kazmir.

3. The Indians have allowed 27 runs in their last three losses.

PREDICTION: Yankees 4, Indians 3

Miami at Philadelphia
When: 7:05 PM ET, Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
By SportsDirect Inc.

Domonic Brown has been nothing short of amazing as the Philadelphia Phillies continue their three-game series at home against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. While the Phillies have not been at the breakeven mark since April 14, Brown has carried the offense recently, batting 17-for-38 with nine home runs and 17 RBIs over his last 10 games. Brown homered and recorded his second straight three-hit effort and fifth multi-hit game in his last six in Monday's 7-2 win over Miami.

The Marlins entered Citizens Bank Park coming off a home sweep of the New York Mets, but dropped their eighth straight road game to fall to a league-worst 6-22 on the road. Miami averaged eight runs and batted .370 as it matched its longest winning streak of the season during the three-game sweep. However, the lowest-scoring offense in the majors pieced together only two runs and six hits against Philadelphia in the series opener.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Florida (Miami), Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Ricky Nolasco (3-6, 3.69 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jonathan Pettibone (3-1, 3.64)

Nolasco continued to be dogged by the league worst run support among qualified players (2.25), taking the loss in Thursday's 5-2 home setback against the Tampa Bay Rays. Miami's ace posted his third consecutive quality start allowing three runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings but is only 1-1 over that span despite a 2.01 ERA and 22 strikeouts. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two outings against the Phillies this season, but 8-6 with a 3.85 ERA against them in 20 career appearances (17 starts).

Petitbone endured the roughest outing of his eight-start major-league career in Thursday's 9-2 home loss against the Boston Red Sox. The 22-year-old surrendered four runs on six hits and four walks over five frames, marking the first time he yielded more than three runs in a start. Petitbone, who is 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA at home this season, outdueled Nolasco on May 3 his third career start when he held Miami to one run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brown, who leads the National League with 17 home runs, is 6-for-12 all-time against Nolasco.

2. Miami rookie RF Marcell Ozuna has reached base safely in 19 consecutive games, batting .352 over that span.

3. The Phillies have won six of their last eight and 19 of their last 26 games against the Marlins at home.

PREDICTION: Phillies 4, Marlins 3

20* AL GAME OF THE WEEK on Tampa Bay Rays +125

Getting Matt Moore at this price is an absolute gift from oddsmakers. I'll gladly take advantage and back the Rays at an excellent price today.

Moore is 8-0 with a 2.18 ERA and 1.081 WHIP through 11 starts this season. Moore is also 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 0.929 WHIP in his last three starts.

Moore has faced the Yankees one in his career, going 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his lone career start against New York.

Tampa is 25-12 (+15.5 Units) against the money line in road games vs. a starting pitcher with good control (less than 1.75 BB's/start) over the last 2 seasons. Sanchez is 6-17 (-13.6 Units) against the money line when playing against a team with a winning record over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record) Bet the Rays Sunday.
